Bali Tours & Holidays

Tourists with their guide at a temple in Bali

There are 17,000 islands in the Indonesian archipelago, but none shine brighter than Bali.

From the green slopes of Mt Batur to the Bintang bodegas on Seminyak’s main party strip, Bali is a volcano-dotted, beach-fringed paradise that’s serene and sensational by turns. But beyond the mega-resorts and yoga studios, you'll find the essence of Bali in the temples, out-of-the-way mountain towns, local markets and lazy fishing villages. Our Bali tours are about  diving the impossibly blue waters off Lovina, being welcomed into a Balinese family home , soaking in the Banja hot springs, or sipping smoothies in Ubud’s cafes . As always, when it comes to paradise, the hardest bit is choosing what to do first.

Learn more about Bali

Local culture.

Between the 12th and 20th centuries, Bali has often been treated as a pawn in the games of kings, rajahs and generals. More often than not, its fate has been closely tied to neighbouring Lombok with fierce battles between the two islands over the centuries as different rulers vied for regional dominance. This history of varied occupation can be seen in Bali today, with elements of Hinduism and Islam present in modern Balinese society. However, there is no historical animosity between the religions, or even between the islands of Lombok and Bali.

One of the defining moments in Bali’s history took place in the 16th century when the collapse of the Majapahit dynasty encouraged the spread of Islam from the surrounding states into the Javanese kingdom. Rather than live under Islamic rule, many Hindu elites chose to escape to Bali. These elites included many artists, dancers, musicians, actors and court-supported artisans, as well as some more artistically inclined priests. The result was an intense proliferation of cultural arts across Bali, no doubt inspired by rich Balinese folklore featuring epic battles of good and evil, gods and mortals. This reputation persists today, with many travellers falling in love with the island’s intricate temple carvings, dance performances, colourful sarongs and handicrafts.

When you combine a love of arts with world-class beaches and deliciously fiery sambals, it’s no surprise Bali’s tourism industry is soaring. It’s not unusual for someone to ask you whether this is your second, third or fourth visit to the island. Many locals rely on tourism to some extent, either by working as tour operators or running hotels, yoga studios, massage parlours, bars, cafes or restaurants.

The destination’s popularity with  Australians  means there’s a gradual cultural creep in larger cities like Seminyak, where Melbourne-style cafes and international clothing labels are particularly popular. If you escape the resorts and head further north from Denpasar, you’re more likely to encounter traditional warungs (eateries) and villages untouched by tourism sprawl.

One last word of advice: always watch where you put your feet. Locals will traditionally place small offerings on the footpaths outside their homes or businesses up to three times a day. 83.5% of the population identifies as Hindu and religion plays a large part in Balinese life. In fact, there is a small religious ceremony associated with just about every aspect of Balinese culture, whether it’s the beginning of a soccer game, celebrating the full moon or cleaning the house.

Food and drink

At first glance it might seem difficult to pinpoint Bali’s exact culinary identity. The mishmash of Indonesian and pan-Asian influences means you’re likely to come across menus that sometimes feel part Thai, Malaysian, Indian and Vietnamese. But no matter what you order, the food will always be fresh and bursting with flavour. Dishes are typically made fresh each day, with curries and pastes prepared by hand using traditional methods.

The most authentic food in Bali is usually found streetside at eateries called warungs. Warungs are common in every village and city, and a good place for a quick feed on a budget. Many will specialise in a small menu of popular local dishes.

Top foods to try in Bali

Babi guling:  This is slow cooking Balinese-style. A whole pig is stuffed with chilli, turmeric, ginger, galangal, shallots, garlic, coriander seeds and aromatic leaves and rotated over an open fire. This dish is commonly seen at celebrations.

Satay:  Sometimes spelt ‘sate’ on local menus, Indonesia is famous for its tasty meat skewers (usually chicken) cooked over hot coals and slathered in moreish peanut sauce.

Nasi campur:  Nasi campur feels like a bit of a buffet. Your plate typically comes with a scoop of nasi putih accompanied by small portions of a number of other dishes, including meats, vegetables, peanuts, eggs, and fried-shrimp krupuk.

Nasi goreng:  The old favourite among tertiary students is nothing like the local version. Nasi goreng, literally meaning "fried rice”, is a popular rice dish with pieces of meat and vegetables, and a fried egg added on top.

Sambal:  A fiery paste made using a chili base smashed with secondary ingredients like shrimp paste, fish sauce, garlic, ginger, shallot, scallion, palm sugar, lime juice, and rice vinegar.

Eating vegetarian in Bali

Going vegetarian is relatively easy in Bali as many dishes are already meat-free. Tofu and tempeh are also a standard part of the local diet. Key vegetarian dishes to look out for include nasi saur (rice flavoured with toasted coconut and accompanied by tofu, tempeh, vegetables and sometimes egg), urap (steamed vegetables mixed with grated coconut and spices), gado gado (tofu and tempeh mixed with steamed vegetables, boiled egg and peanut sauce) and sayur hijau (leafy green vegetables, usually kangkung – water spinach – flavoured with a tomato-chilli sauce).

The abundance of fresh fruits in Bali means you can buy fresh coconuts and juices (or fruity cocktails) almost anywhere you go. If you're looking for something with a bit more punch then you could order a Bintang, the national larger or maybe arak – a local liquor made from fermented rice and coconut palm flowers.

Festivals and events

Many festivals in the Balinese calendar revolve around religious and spiritual occasions marked by periods of prayer or silence, and followed by lots of festivities and feasting. Some festivals might be inconvenient for travellers, such as the Day of Silence, but they’re also a great opportunity to gain an insight into local life that many don’t get to see.

Multiple surf contests are held throughout the year at different times and in different places. Check with local surfing schools for up to date information.

Top festivals in Bali

Nyepi (Day of Silence):  Bali’s major Hindu festival, Nyepi, or the Day of Silence, celebrates the beginning of a new year and is marked by inactivity. Legends say that this is a strategy to convince evil spirits that Bali is uninhabited and therefore not worthy of visiting! Jokes on them. The day involves prayer, meditation and quiet reflection.

Bali Arts Festival:  For an island with a strong history of cultural arts, it’s no surprise the Bali Arts Festival has pride of place in the annual calendar. Based at the Taman Wedhi Budaya arts centre in Denpasar, travellers can see village-based dance groups competing for local pride across several traditional dance categories. The date changes each year but is typically held between mid-June to mid-July.

Bali Kite Festival:  From July to October, the skies of southern Bali fill with huge, colourful monsters, critters and imaginative creations. Scores of kites are launched by the locals as part of this special spiritual event. It is believed the kites urge the gods to provide abundant harvests.

Indonesian Independence Day:  Held on 17 August each year, this day celebrates Indonesia's independence from the Dutch in 1945. Expect to see legions of marching school children, flags, kites and fireworks. Don’t expect to get anywhere quickly either on the day or the days leading up to it.

Galungan and Kuningan:  Galungan celebrates the death of a legendary tyrant called Mayadenawa. The celebrations come to a head with the Kuningan festival, which is when the Balinese say thanks and goodbye to the gods. The exact dates of these two festivals vary as they are planned using the 210-day wuku (or Pawukon) calendar.

Geography and environment

Bali is undoubtedly Indonesia’s most popular province thanks to its abundance of beautiful beaches, leafy jungles and impressive mountains. Located just east of Java and west of Lombok, the Bali province includes not only the island of Bali but also a few of the smaller neighbouring islands, such as Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan.

Bali's highest mountain is Mt Agung (3,031 m, 9,944 ft), which is also known as the "Mother Mountain”. One of the other popular volcanoes on the island is Mt Batur. Both of these volcanoes have contributed to Bali’s incredibly fertile soil, which has allowed the rice crop trade to flourish.

Bali is located just 8 degrees south of the equator, which means it enjoys a fairly even climate year-round. The average year-round temperature hovers around 30°C (86°F), with a humidity level of about 85%. It's also surrounded by coral reefs and is part of the Coral Triangle, an area with the highest biodiversity of marine species. Over 500 reef-building coral species can be found here, which is seven times the entire Caribbean.

Bali’s problems with environmental pollution are well-documented, and it’s fair to say that the nearly 5.7 million tourists who visit annually are contributing their fair share. In late 2017, Indonesian officials declared a “garbage emergency” after a tide of plastic washed up a 5.8 kilometre (3.6 mile) stretch of coastline. We encourage all travellers to carry a reusable plastic bottle with them, a reusable tote bag for carrying items and to try and minimise their use of plastics wherever possible.

While you’ll find many of the main tourism hubs, like Seminyak and Kuta, filled with international fashion labels, there are also many local boutiques offering a wide variety of hand-made goods. These include traditional wood carvings (and even some famously phallic bottle openers), silver jewellery, colourful sarongs, eco-friendly bags, bamboo satchels, recycled furniture and a near limitless range of body oils and fragrances. Of course, if you’re looking for a traditional ‘I Heart Bali’ t-shirt or Bintang singlet, these are never in short supply either.

Like many parts of South East Asia, bargaining is a big part of the local shopping experience. Getting a good price comes down to how well you can haggle, but it’s important to have fun, bargain in good faith, and remember to smile. You’ll usually find better prices, and more negotiable shop owners, away from the main tourist strips.

When is the best time to visit Bali?

Sitting a snug 8 degrees from the equator, Bali’s climate is classic tropics. There’s a dry season and a rainy season, and not a whole lot in between.

The best time for a Bali tour (weather-wise) is the July to August peak season, or from December to the first week of January.

Although if you’d like to avoid the crowds (and why wouldn’t you) shoulder months like April, May, June and September make an excellent alternative.

The weather is dry and slightly less humid, and the island in general is a lot more relaxed.

October isn’t too bad either, especially if you’re into water sports like scuba diving, surfing or snorkelling (the rainfall is much lighter than in November).

Do you need a visa for a Bali tour?

The short answer is maybe – depending on your nationality. Passport holders from over 60 countries (including the   UK ,   Australia   and the   United States ) can enter Indonesia with a free tourist visa on arrival which allows you to stay for 30 days for tourism purposes. An immigration officer will date stamp your passport when you arrive and you will not be able to extend your stay. If you overstay there are hefty fines of IDR 1,000,000 (approximately 70 USD) per day.

If there's a chance you might want to stay longer than 30 days, you'll need to pay for a visa on arrival or apply for one prior to travelling at an overseas Indonesian consulate or embassy.

To enter Bali, you’ll need to meet the following requirements:

  • proof of onward or return ticket
  • proof of funds to pay for your expenses during your trip
  • completed immigration card (this will usually be given to you on the plane or at the arrival terminal)

Local laws require that you must be able to show your valid passport at any time when required to do so by an immigration office. We recommend taking a clear photocopy of your passport photo page, and visa (after arriving), to carry with you.

This page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Should I tip on a Bali tour?

Tipping isn’t compulsory in Bali, or anywhere else in Indonesia. But, like most countries, it’s very much appreciated.

Remember that many Balinese rely on tourism as a main source of income, and a tip is always appreciated.

What is the internet access like in Bali?

In tourist centers like Kuta, Seminyak, Denpasar, and Lovina internet access should be fine, and there will be plenty of internet cafes (or cafes with free internet) to choose from if your Wi-Fi isn’t up to scratch.

In more rural areas, there could be little or no coverage, particularly during homestays. Just remember to plan ahead.

What are the toilets like in Bali?

Restaurants and hotels in developed tourist centers will have Western-style flush toilets.

In more rural areas the traditional squat toilet will be more common.

We recommend packing a bottle of hand sanitizer if you plan to visit rural parts of Bali.

What will it cost for a...?

Indonesia is one of the world's favourite budget travel destinations. Here's what you can roughly expect to pay for a:

  • Street food snack = 0.15c USD
  • Fresh juice = 0.40c USD
  • Bottle of beer in a bar = 1.50 USD
  • Souvenir sarong = 1.80 USD
  • Dinner in a restaurant = 3 USD

Can I drink the water on a Bali tour?

Drinking water from taps isn’t recommended in Indonesia, but for environmental reasons try to avoid buying bottled water every day. There are a number of filtered canteens you can purchase or bring a supply of water filtration tablets that you can drop into your bottle wherever you go.

If you’re travelling on an Intrepid Travel trip, we always carry with us a large drum of water in our truck to refill your bottles on the road. Our hotel operators will also provide water free of charge to refill your bottles.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Bali?

Major credit cards are widely accepted by large shops, hotels and restaurants in Bali.

T hey may not be accepted by smaller vendors such as small family restaurants, market stalls or in remote towns and rural areas.

Make sure you carry enough cash for purchases since credit cards aren't always an option everywhere in Bali.

What is ATM access like in Indonesia?

ATMs are found widely throughout Bali, so withdrawing cash shouldn't be problematic in most areas. Some smaller villages and rural areas may not have ATM access, so be prepared for this before venturing too far from a city or major town.

What public holidays are celebrated in Bali?

Public holidays may vary from year to year. Find out more information on current public holidays in Bali.

Is Bali safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Homosexuality is legal in most of Indonesia, however, revisions to Indonesia’s criminal code are currently being considered that would criminalise gay sex and same-sex relationships. Advocacy groups fear this would represent a profound setback to human rights in Indonesia as a result. The LGBTQIA+ community has also been known to be targeted and harassed by police.

Bali, with its Hindu majority, has always been more liberal, tolerant and relaxed in attitude, however public displays of affection are still not the norm for any couples anywhere in the country. Upscale hotels will likely not have any issues with same-sex travellers sharing a bed, however if you are staying in budget or family-run businesses and are allocated separate beds, you might feel more comfortable not drawing attention to your relationship.

Because sex, in general, is a taboo subject in Indonesian society, the issue of sexuality is unlikely to arise while travelling here. Indonesia is generally safe for queer travellers, provided you are willing to be discreet and cautious with public behaviour.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Bali: An Island Paradise

Bali has been dubbed the “Island of the Gods” and it’s easy to see why once you’re there. This Indonesian island makes the top of many travellers’ lists for its epic surf, lush rice fields and forested volcanic mountains – along with its distinct Hindu culture and breathtaking religious sites. It’s the perfect place to relax and redefine your priorities. Balinese culture is steeped in tradition and is often expressed through art, street processions and festivals. Bali has thousands of temples and each celebrates its own festival, with most lasting about three days. It seems nearly every Balinese person practices some form of art, craft, music, drama or dance. If you don’t know which of Bali’s temples to prioritise, be sure to see Pura Luhur Ulu Watu. It is perched atop cliffs in the island’s southwest and a definite sight to behold. Canggu is one of Bali’s trendiest destinations du jour – in part because of its proximity to the beach. It makes a great jumping off point to explore Seminyak (known for its stylish cafes and bars) and the surf mecca of Tanah Lot. Want to get below the waves? Dive at Pemuteran (an underwater park that combines art with marine reef rehabilitation) or the 30m wall at Pulau Menjangan. The mangroves of Nusa Lembongan, meanwhile, are accessible to snorkelers and are home to more multi-coloured fishes than you’ll be able to count. If you’re looking to get away from the crowds, venture outside Ubud and south Bali. The north and west coasts (along with the central mountains) are ideal for solitude seekers. Those who want to stay active or explore their spiritual side will also find peace and quiet at one of the islands many yoga and meditation retreats. Best for: Beach Bums; Active Travellers; Voluntourists; Couples/Honeymooners; Self-Improvement/Health Travellers; Backpackers/Budget Travellers; Nature Lovers; Luxury Travellers

The Indonesian masterpiece of Bali is an island where volcanoes soar through the clouds, rice paddies layer hillsides and tropical beaches line dreamy coastlines.  Intricate temples dotted throughout are a reminder of the religious and cultural traditions in which the nation is steeped, welcoming yoga retreats and meditation.

The warm, clear waters of the Bali coast are a popular surfing paradise, complimented with lively nightlife and an abundance of activities and outdoor adventures.  Forests and lush vegetation make for awe-inspiring hikes and biking.

A 2.5-hour boat ride from Bali’s coast lie the Gili islands, a trio of tropical island escapes known for their colourful coral reefs and white sandy beaches. Local horse cart and bicycles are the main mode of transport on these islands.  A social atmosphere with access to dive centres, night clubs, bars and sunbathing spots are found on Gili Trawangan, whilst Gili Meno is a quieter romantic hideaway.

TOP REASONS TO GO TO BALI

Bali offers mesmerizing scenery, a world of adventure and affordability at its best.  Whether you are embarking on a restful retreat or hoping to hit the surf and make the most of the bustling nightlife, Bali has the perfect option for you.  Its warm climate, temperate waters and sociable people, make the island a welcoming sanctuary.  Bali is a treasure trove of cultural discoveries from authentic cuisine and intricately handcrafted wood to local crafts and an incredible selection of age-old temples to visit.

Well known for magnificent diving and snorkeling opportunities, you can’t go wrong with choosing Bali as your next destination for coral reef exploration.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO TRAVEL?

With a dreamy tropical climate, averaging temperatures of 30°C year-round, Bali is a warm hideout for anyone trying escape cold winter months.  October to April can bring heavy showers and high humidity, but the days are usually sunny.  May to September are not quite as humid and evenings can be cool.

Festival time in Bali is a great period to enjoy not only the ideal climate but also the conviviality of the season.  The Kite Festival falls during June to August while Ultra Beach Bali and Nusa Dua Fiesta are both generally in September.

OUR MOST POPULAR BALINESE PACKAGES

Although small in size, Bali’s landscapes and activity compliment are surprisingly varied. In order to make the most of your visit to Bali, make sure you visit the location conducive to your interests. Whether it be a yoga retreat in the mountains, the best place to surf, cycle or dive, or a holiday escape to islandic utopia, here are our most popular Bali packages to make planning your trip a breeze.

let's plan your trip

OUR BALI TRAVEL ADVICE

Steeped in traditions and built on religion, Bali prides itself in respectful living.  As a visitor it is important to respect local traditions to get the most out of your experience.  Avoid wearing revealing clothing when visiting temples and refrain from using your left hand for handshakes or giving and receiving anything.  Like anywhere in South East Asia, calmness is admired so ‘keep your cool’ when bargaining or if things are not going according to plan.

When it comes to transport it is advised to negotiate taxi fare before the journey commences as many taxis are not metred.  Motorcycles can be hired but road and traffic conditions can be somewhat hazardous.

PLANNING YOUR BALINESE ITINERARY

Once a sleepy fishing village, Kuta Beach is now Bali’s surfing, shopping and nightlife hub, a fantastic choice for an all-round tropical getaway.  For a holiday where the emphasis is on relaxation, visit the quieter Sanur Beach and for trendy, upmarket taste and a little more luxury, Seminyak and Nusa Dua are home to holiday opulence, golfing, nightclubs and magnificent beachfront resorts.

Get into the heart of nature and authentic Balinese culture in Ubud.  Here climbing a volcano, canyoning, downhill cycling, or a hike through traditional villages will simply take your breath away.

ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS FOR ALL BUDGETS

Backpackers, resort living, beachfront bliss or all-inclusive luxury – Bali has it all.  Palm trees and pools can be expected at the majority of resorts and of course, proximity to glorious sunny beaches lined with crystal waters.

When it comes to accommodation in inland Ubud, there’s everything from beautiful guesthouses, to luxurious jungle retreats, spa hotels and honeymoon resorts.  Most include breakfast to set you off well for a day of activity and exploration.  Here magnificent views over rice paddies, endless jungle and majestic mountains will leave you in awe.  Soak up the views from your private pool and feel your soul revived.

THINGS TO DO IN BALI

Not often considered as the first choice for a shopping spree, Bali offers anything from artwork, handicrafts, essence oils and clothing to furniture and accessories.

If you’re trying to get away from the bustle, head into the ocean.  Ask our expert guides which area is most ideal for your desired water sport activity.  Whether you’re a beginner or well-rounded surfer there is space for you in the waves.

Visit Monkey Forest, the active volcano of Mount Batur and witness panoramic lake views.  With many cultural stops and ancient temples, there is never a shortage of intriguing discoveries.  We also recommend a visit to Tanah Lot, a temple built on a rock in the ocean.

Snorkel the remains of a US liberty ship which sunk during World War II, now a fully-grown reef.  Dolphin cruises and fun-filled family activities are plenty as you enjoy banana boat rides and thrilling waterslides.

Bali Holiday Packages

Explore our holiday package deals in bali, frequently asked questions.

There really is something for everyone in Bali. Head to Seminyak for sunset beach clubs and high-end restaurants, stay in Nusa Dua for family friendly luxury resorts and watersports or embrace your adventurous side with a sunrise climb of Mount Batur, Bali’s second-largest volcano. Byron Bay-esque Canggu is perfect for boho beach lovers, whereas Kuta is where it's at for surfing, markets, vibrant nightlife and competitively priced resorts. Can't decide? Choose Legian for a mix of everything or escape to Jimbaran Bay or Uluwatu for an ultra-opulent clifftop stay. Nestled in the pristine Balinese jungle, Ubud features a myriad of 5-star retreats with infinity pools and indulgent spas and is the perfect place to rest and recharge.

A Bali holiday package means your money goes further. 60-minute massages could cost as little as AU$10, while even the finest of dining won’t break the bank.

Boasting a prestigious location on the Nusa Dua beachfront, the exclusive Meliá Bali is one of the most impressive resorts in Bali and features an exceptional collection of luxurious suites and villas across a sweeping landscape of first-class facilities. Deep in the Ubud jungle, Hanging Gardens of Bali features one of the world's most instagrammable pools — an infinity lagoon with sweeping treetop views — while back in the trendy hub of Seminyak, One Eleven's private pool three-bedroom penthouse complete with 24-hour butler service is perfect for a luxury escape with family or friends.

The sheer variety of a Bali holiday package means you’ll need to pack smart: swimmers should sit by summer dresses and smart shirts, while sunscreen and insect repellant is a must. That way, you’ll be ready for every adventure the island paradise throws your way.

During your watch, you’ll have the opportunity to learn navigation skills, practice celestial navigation, and understand the intricacies of wind patterns and weather systems. Each member of the team plays a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient passage of the vessel, working together seamlessly to keep the ship on course.

While sailing without seeing land can be intense, it also offers moments of tranquility and reflection. The vastness of the ocean provides a stunning backdrop for stargazing, as you witness breathtaking celestial displays far away from city lights. You’ve embarked on the journey of a lifetime. Having already traveled thousands of miles to Bali, there’s a newfound sense of excitement and a pep in your step as you exit baggage claim and hail a cab onwards to our vessel and your new home for the next 90 days. Once aboard, with introductions made, bags unpacked and various formalities out of the way – spend a moment to take it all in. The beauty of your new surroundings, the adventure that awaits, and the realization that you have made what was once a mere pipe dream into your reality. 6,500 nautical miles, komodo dragons, pristine coral atolls, and South Africa’s big five lies between you and Cape Town. You’re officially part of the crew now…..relish the challenge ahead.

Sample Trip Itinerary*

Learning the ropes.

Early on day two, we cast our lines and the journey begins. As with all Sea|mester voyages, the first week to ten days of the program is a crash course on how to be successful in your new environment. With the guidance of our staff, you’ll learn the in’s and out’s of how to live, work and learn in such close quarters with others – from sailing to cooking and everything in between.

Those new to scuba diving will spend quite a bit of time underwater working towards the PADI Open Water Certification. Those arriving with more experience will get reacquainted with the underwater world by taking a few refresher dives.

During the first week, you’ll also have your first lectures for each of the four college-level courses. While the structure of the syllabi might look familiar, you’ll quickly find that learning from the deck of a boat couldn’t be more different.

Exploring the Underwater Realm

10-15 dives.

This journey frontloads as much diving as possible towards the beginning of the trip where you’ll sail over some of the most pristine reefs our planet has left. If you’re new to diving, you’ll earn the PADI Open Water Dive Certification as well as the Advanced Open Water Dive Certification.

Depending on time, conditions and student interest, many groups also earn the PADI Rescue Diver certification. If you’re already an experienced diver, you can work all the way up to the professional Divemaster certification. If you feel that scuba diving is a passion, this is definitely the voyage to consider.

Anchors Down – Komodo, Indonesia

This island may be best known for the dragons that rule it without competition but it’s the saturated colors you’ll find exploring this place that will stick with you. Jade sloping hills fade seamlessly into the pink sands that lead to the red coral and endless indigo sea. As you become more comfortable with being underwater, the steep reefs and abundant wildlife of Komodo will continue to astonish on certification and fun dives. No visit would be complete without a visit to the fishing village of Kampung Komodo or a hike to the islands in search of dragons.

>Next stop: Gili Islands

The gili islands.

No cars, no motorcycles, and no roads – the Gili islands are an increasingly world-renowned destination for those looking for the perfect island getaway. The shallow turquoise water over white sand is the ideal place for open water divers to take their first breaths underwater and those with previous experience to refresh their memory. Paradise is just a stepping stone between passages so soak it in with some time on shore and flips off the beam.

>Next stop: Bali

The otherworldly nature of the Balinese landscape is mirrored and perhaps magnified by the heavily spiritual and joyful culture and customs of its people. You’ll be caught up in the whirlwind that is Balinese daily life by venturing into some of the island’s most iconic temples and participating in the otherworldly firedances performed island-wide. Bali is also a world famous destination for surfers of all skill levels – you’ll take a lesson and have a chance to hang ten on the world famous Kuta Beach.

>Next stop: Christmas Island

Christmas island.

Although this remote island is under the jurisdiction of Australia, it seems more realistic to say that the migration of the island’s red crab population has more control over the daily lives of its inhabitants. This volcanic island boasts high plateaus, canopied rainforests, and cliffs that fall freely to the reef system that surrounds it completely. We’ll pack three dives including your first night dive into our time here as you and your crew work towards your advanced certifications and specialties.

>Next stop: Cocos (Keeling)

Cocos (keeling).

Few people have heard of the Cocos islands and even fewer have had the pleasure of visiting but the loss is truly theirs. A daunting 2-day journey from mainland Australia, these coral atolls that inspired Darwin’s theory of island formation are said to be the holy grail of remote wonderlands. You’ll have a proper goodbye to this region of the world before setting out across the Indian ocean, with picturesque beach barbecues, a boom swing, and snorkeling that has to be seen to be believed.

>Next stop: Mauritius

Cultural exchange, connecting people with places.

In some ports of call, locals will hardly bat an eyelash when a white schooner with 31 souls drops anchor in their harbor. Larger cities and resort hubs are accustomed to a degree of transience with up to thousands of foreigners flowing through their streets in a single day. On the flip side, much of the Indian Ocean is out of the way and rarely visited.

As a result, the farther you sail from civilization the more you’ll find the people to be welcoming, cheerful, and unfailingly obliging. Whether it’s picking up a beach soccer game with local kids in Durban or lending a hand to the people of Cocos Keeling – you’ll find meaningful connections every step of the way.

Rite of Passage

Sailing without seeing land.

One unique aspect of this journey is that the passages get longer as you move towards your final destination. We’ll follow in the wake of Captain Cook’s first European expedition through this part of the world with stops that look as pristine as they did centuries ago.

As we turn our bow to the southwest outside of Indonesia, the rhythm of the trip shifts. With the fundamental knowledge in place, we now embark on the next phase of the expedition. Days are no longer split between day and night, but rather between on and off watch. You’ll be an integral part of a watch team sharing the responsibility of navigation, bow watch, engine checks, sail trim and steering the ship to its next port.

Anchors Down – Mauritius

Mark Twain once said, “Mauritius was made first and then heaven, heaven being copied after Mauritius…” After roughly 14 days of exhilarating downwind sailing over rolling seas, you’ll find that this wildlife refuge is the perfect place to find your shore legs again. You’ll get one last taste of tropical diving and discover the island’s seemingly limitless ecosystem in days of exploring the abundant wildlife, lush highlands, and eclectic cuisine.

>Next stop: South Africa

Richard’s bay, south africa.

You will feel an overwhelming sense of accomplishment when you finally step foot on the mainland of Africa – take a deep breath, you’ve just crossed an ocean! Okay now get going, there’s so much to experience! Your first stop in South Africa will include a Safari tour of the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve, shore time, and maybe a chance to catch a rugby or cricket game. You’ll also get a chance to supplement your Marine biology classes with a hands-on shark dissection.

>Next stop: Durban

Durban, east london, & port elizabeth.

With the wind and current coming from the bow, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to seek shelter on shore. As South Africa’s third largest city, metropolitan Durban is a brilliant cacophony of colonial architecture retaliating against art deco buildings which contrast with the contemporary waterfront. You’ll wait for a break in the weather by reconnecting with home, catching some rays on the beach, and exploring the street markets in this fast-paced international city.

>Next stop: Cape Town

You’ll feel excitement and nostalgia as you dock Argo for the last time after rounding the Cape of Good Hope. In the shadow of the iconic Table Mountain, you’ll soak in the last moments as a full crew and reflect on how far you have come together. A picturesque hike up the Lion’s Head and an excursion to “penguin beach” at cape point are essential to any Cape Town visit. During the final night out on the V&A waterfront you’ll realize that while the places have been amazing, it’s been the people you met along the way that have made the trip so life-changing.

Full of detailed information about our voyages, staff, and faqs for you to access anytime, academics aboard, 9-12 usf credits.

Throughout the voyage, it’s easy to forget that this is College even though academics are an integral part of the experience. Our instructors schedule 3 or 4 lectures, discussions, or labs per class each week and each course includes quizzes, research projects, midterms, and finals.

Learning in an environment that combines academics with experience allows you to truly interact with your education. It brings academics to life, adding relevance and practical application to the material. Learning has never been this fun.

First Step to Becoming a Captain.

For those who have the prior requisite experience, a passion for sailing, and hope to work in the maritime industry, all our 80 & 90-day voyages aboard S/Y Argo ans S/Y Vela offer the Professional Skipper and Crew Training course (PSCT).

Typically only 3 to 4 students will choose to take this course. Students have the opportunity to work towards their Master of Yachts 200 Ton Offshore License by completing the theory portion, which means passing a series of in-depth examinations covering subjects such as Meteorology, Navigation, Tides & Currents, and Collision Regulations.

Time to Say Goodbye

The best way to explain what it means to say goodbye after such an incredible experience is to use the words from someone who had to do just that…

With the date so close, everyone is already talking about what's next, and it’s amazing to hear so many things have changed since the beginning of the trip. We’ve all grown so much, we’ve learned new things, experienced places like Cocos Keeling where very few people have been, we’ve crossed a whole ocean, and the 30 of us have become a family. I believe we’ve all changed, matured, and many of us are forming ideas of our futures. Maybe we all don’t know exactly what we want to be, but we have a better idea of who we want to be, what we want to do with our lives, and where we want to go next. Keanna R. Cape Town, South Africa

Need To Know

Our 90-day Global Sea|mester Voyages offer the most comprehensive experience in terms of the geographical area covered and both academic and vocational classes and certifications earned. During the program, up to 12 academic credits are offered for the Seamanship, Student Leadership, Oceanography, and Marine Biology classes taught aboard. In addition, there are several vocational courses offered for those looking to further their professional development in the maritime industry. For more information on our classes, please visit our academics page.

None at all. All you need is a great attitude and a willingness to fully participate in every aspect of the experience.

Six professional staff members live aboard full-time. There will be the Skipper, the First and Second Mate and two Marine Biologists (who are typically scuba diving instructors) and a sixth staff member who could also be an EMT or someone with other special skills. Take a look through our team page for more information.

Meet our team

In Indonesia, we’ll be experiencing spring and early summer conditions which should be very stable and pleasant. It is likely that we will see varying tropical weather conditions during our westbound offshore crossings to Africa. Once in South Africa, we will sail in cooler weather with highs in the mid 60’s and upper 70’s (degrees Fahrenheit).

When we are ashore or close at anchor there will be plenty of opportunities to communicate with friends and family at home. That said, while aboard we have guidelines as to when it is appropriate to use your personal communications devices. The environment we strive to create relies heavily on each individual remaining focused on the group and our experience. Being tied to the modern world of “instant communications” can, in certain circumstances, be a hindrance to the personal and group processes aboard.

Cell Phones: Check with your provider before you go, but so long as you have a sim card, your cell phone will likely work in most global locations.

Internet: While our vessels are not wifi equipped, another way to communicate is by email, text, Facetime or Skype using shore side internet. The internet is often free or available to purchase in most of the locations that we visit.

Both on the vessel and ashore, the answer is up to you. The vast majority of the meals during your trip are prepared and eaten aboard. For meals aboard, each person on the crew takes a turn as head chef to plan and cook the meals for an entire day with the help of another person acting as sous-chef. We all work to stay within a budget, with both students and staff responsible for stocking the vessels. We endeavor to accommodate everyone aboard while providing what any alumni will tell you, was a great dining adventure. During your free time ashore you will have the opportunity to eat more adventurously. With the voyage starting in Indonesia we’re sure that you’ll have the opportunity to sample some traditional Balinese food like Babi Guling and Betutu before heading out. Once across the Indian Ocean, the African influence will be in full force with Biltong jerky being a favorite snack on the last trip we made to South Africa.

Sea|mester students range in age from 18 through to about 22. Average age is right around 20, yet this can change from voyage to voyage. Give a call through to the office if you are interested in learning more about the student crew.

Nitty Gritty

Students come from all over the world, so coordinated travel is vital..

You can choose to book on your own, yet we suggest that you start by requesting a quote from one of our recommended travel partners as they will provide you with service on-beyond an online booking service or search engine.

This voyage is scheduled to:

  • Start in Bali, Indonesia (airport code DPS)
  • End in Cape Town, South Africa (airport code CPT)

When booking travel, students should be aware that the program start date is the date upon which students should arrive aboard the vessel. The program end date is the date on which students should depart the vessel and start their travel home.

Recommended Travel Agents

a. TRC Travel Center

Leah Hernandez is our primary travel coordinator, and she works for a company called TRC Travel Center. Leah obtains great fares and provides close monitoring and assistance on travel days in case of flight difficulties. Leah will also maintain your flight details in the Student Portal on your behalf, ensuring their accuracy in the event of flight changes. Connect with Leah – Phone: +1.281.528.7727 (9am – 5pm Central Time) Email: [email protected]

b. Global Marine Travel

An alternative is to contact Global Marine Travel (GMT) to request a quote for a “Marine Fare” ticket. Marine Fares may be cheaper or more expensive than a regular fare, but in most cases will be more flexible should you need to change your ticket and will include the provision for a larger number of checked bags. Do the research to figure out which ticket suits you best. Connect with GMT – Phone: +1.954.761.9595 (24hrs) Email: [email protected]

When contacting GMT, you will need to reference the following:

  • Organizational Name: Global Expeditions Group
  • Vessel Name (select): Ocean Star, Argo or Vela
  • Vessel Registry: British Virgin Islands

c. Other Booking Options – Air Miles & Self Booking

We cannot be responsible for coordinating flights booked in this way, so please ensure that you are booking the correct itinerary (dates/destination) before purchasing a ticket online or through a source other than our recommended travel partners. If you have any questions regarding the date or time of arrival for your voyage, please call us to confirm any proposed flight itinerary before you book it. Once booked, you will be required to enter, then maintain accurate flight details in the relevant section of the Student Portal.

Your passport’s expiration date is of utmost importance to the immigration officials in the countries we visit. Each government mandates a “minimum validity,” with many using a six-month rule, meaning that the visitor’s passport must remain valid for six (6) months AFTER the last day of travel in that country. A few nations have more lenient minimum validity rules, but since we typically visit multiple countries throughout the voyage, meeting the six-month standard is compulsory in most cases. If your passport expires sooner than six months after the final day of your program, we recommend that you talk to the passport office about their backlog and renewal timeframe. You may also contact our office to learn more about whether you would be able to travel on a passport that expires earlier than six months after your trip ends.

US Citizens: Those traveling on a US passport rarely need to apply for specific country visas in advance of the program. In certain circumstances, we are required to process a vessel cruising permit or visitation visa on your behalf before the trip. If this is the case, we’ll let you know in advance whether there are any steps that we need you to take.

Students traveling on non-U.S. passports: Aside from needing a valid US ESTA to transit through the United States (if applicable), students traveling on a Canadian or an EU passport rarely need to apply for any other specific country visas in advance of the program. Learn more about the ESTA requirements, and whether this applies to you here – https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/ .

Citizens of Asian, African, and South American nations may need to apply for specific visas. Since we cannot apply for visas on your behalf, you must take the following steps as soon as you can.

  • Contact our office and request a definitive list of the countries we will visit on the voyage. Please do not rely on the sample itineraries listed on our website.
  • Verify visa requirements for your nationality by contacting the local embassy or consulate for these destination countries.

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement

We do not currently require proof of vaccination in order to enroll.

Other Immunizations

We know that each individual has unique medical considerations and understand that families have varying opinions on immunizations as a whole. While we are not physicians and cannot provide official or specific medical advice, we recommend that you talk with your healthcare provider to discuss the trip and check that all standard immunizations and boosters are up to date.

The CDC’s (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) website at www.cdc.gov contains an excellent section that focuses on Travelers’ Health. This is a useful resource as you consider which precautions you might want to take. When completing your research, bear in mind that your voyage is almost 100% coastal. Many of the CDC’s recommendations are specific to agricultural or rural areas or regions within the country which we do not visit.

Sea|mester tuition includes the following:

  • Sea|mester academic instruction for the applicable courses offered during the voyage
  • University of South Florida (USF) academic credit for all academic classes offered during the program.
  • Full room and board
  • All group excursions, field trips and destination-focused educational experiences
  • Non-professional sailing instruction and certification costs
  • Non-professional scuba instruction and certification costs

Not included in the Sea|mester tuition:

  • Travel expenses from home to the program (flights, visas, ferry, taxi, baggage, taxes, etc.)
  • Required International SOS and MedAire membership & emergency evacuation insurance. (20-day voyages = $100 | 40-day voyages = $175 | 80 & 90-day voyages = $250) LEARN MORE >
  • Vaccinations (if required/selected)
  • PADI required course books and materials
  • Personal spending money
  • Travel & Tuition Protection insurance – LEARN MORE >

Though the fundamentals of our voyages do not change, specific logistics evolve over time and can be subject to change based on any number of factors, most of which relate directly to risk management planning.

For this reason, the map and voyage timeline portions of this page should give you a basic understanding of the places we’ll go and activities we’ll do, but you should expect your voyage to be unique. If you take a look through the Trip Logs for previous voyages, you’ll see that they can differ significantly.

With that in mind, we encourage all students to “live in the moment” while on the program. Travel, even on organized trips, requires flexibility and a willingness to accept adversity and change. We hope you’ll take the bumps in stride, and enjoy the adventure!

BALI Visa Requirements for South Africa

South african passport holders (za).

Entering Bali / Indonesia with a Passport from South Africa

What are the Visa Requirements for South African Citizens?

Enter into indonesia / bali with an south african passport.

South Africans can now travel to Indonesia and purchase a Visa on Arrival.

Visit Visa for Bali, Indonesia (also known as Visa on Arrival, VoA & e-VoA)

Faq visit visa / visa on arrival, both, the visit visa is also called visa on arrival (or voa). .

Since Indonesia implemented an option to get the Visa online, it is (was) also called e-VoA.

90+ nationalities can now get a 30days Visit Visa.

Types and updated Codes based on travel purpose:

Most travelers to Bali who can get a Visit Visa will have to apply for the B1.

B1 - Tourist Purpose

  • Conducting activities related to tourism, and visiting friends or family.
  • Participate in meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions as an attendee.
  • Traveling in Indonesia on a yacht (yachter).

B2 - Business Purpose

  • Carry out activities related to business, meetings, or purchase of goods including but not limited to checking goods at the office, factory, or production site of goods.
  • Discuss, negotiate, and/or sign business contracts.

B3 - Medical Vist

  • conducting activities related to medical treatment.

B4 - Government related

  • Conducting activities related to Government Business.

YES - regardless of their age. Also infants.

This is how you can apply for the indonesia tourist visa / visa on arrival:, 1. electronic visa on arrival (e-voa - b1, b2, b3, b4).

You can apply and purchase the Visa already online and avoid queuing at VoA counters at the airport which will save you time and is much more convenient.

You can apply for e-VOA 14 days before your travel. However, you are advised to create an e-VOA request at least 48 hours before your departure, otherwise you might not receive it in time. The Visa is not issued instantly!

2. At the Airport / Harbour upon arrival in Indonesia

If you do not purchase the e-VoA before you arrive in Indonesia online, you can still purchase the Visa at the VoA counters at international airports in the arrival halls (or at harbours, if you arrive by boat or cruise ship).

  • The Visit Visa (VoA) is valid for 30 days initially.
  • The Visa can be extended ONLY ONCE for another 30 days.

There are two ways to extend the Visa on Arrival:

  • If you purchased the Visa ONLINE , you can also extend the visa ONLINE but on the immigration website where you got the visa in the first place ( Imigrasi ). For that you need the login to the account that you created when you applied for the Visa.
  • If you purchased the Visa in person upon arrival you need to apply for a 30days extension in person at an immigration office. We strongly suggest you work with a Visa Agent to get this done, for convenience (Details of the Process, Visa Agent Application and agent price for extension)
  • If you got the Visa online but somehow don't manage to get an extension online (technical issues), then you can alsoi get an extension in person. (Details of the Process, Visa Agent Application and agent price for extension)

Note: Day of arrival and day of departure count as FULL days each.

The documents needed for your Visa applications are:

When you purchase upon arrival at the airport or harbour.

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months on date of arrival (no exceptions!)
  • Return ticket (or outbound of Indonesia)
  • Cash or Credit Card

When you purchase the Visa online BEFORE arrival:

a. Full biodata page of passport with at least 6 months validity from the date of your arrival to Indonesia (format JPG/JPEG/PNG with max. size of 200 kb); b. Passport size photograph (format JPG/JPEG/PNG with max. size of 200 kb); c. Email address; d. A valid Mastercard, Visa, or JCB credit card. e. Residence information in Bali / Indonesia (hotel etc) f. Return or outbound Ticket

The cost is IDR 500,000 (ca. USD 35 / AUD 50) per person

  • Online Purchase (e-VoA) per credit card on the (extra fees might apply) OFFICIAL immigration website
  • Purchase at the airport arrival hall (or harbour) and pay at the VoA counter in cash (EUR, GBP, AUD, USD, SGD, IDR) or by credit card (no AMEX)

Visas are based on your PASSPORT & NATIONALITY. Residency permits of other countries are NOT considered.

If you don't have a passport but a Titre de Voyage, Refugee Travel Document or similar travel documents, you would need to apply for a B211A Visa. Information and Application

Unfortunately there is nothing we can do.

The entire online application service for the Visa on Arrival for Bali is handled 100% by the immigration department. If you run into problems, this is what they said on their website:

"Kindly inform the e-VOA Support Desk (livechat at www.imigrasi.go.id or sending email to [email protected] or [email protected]) should you encounter any suspended or unsuccessful transactions during the request procedure."

Sometimes confirmation emails land in your spam folder, that's the first thing you should check.

Their website seems to be changing rather frequently, and sometimes some features seem to not work on all browsers equally well. What we noticed is, that if you tried to extend a visa and the process failed, it seems you have to then wait one more day to see the extension option again.

Worse case, if the application fails, you can still get the Visa upon arrival in the arrival hall of the airport (Visa on Arrival).

No , you cannot enter multiple times into Indonesia with this Visa.

The visa on arrival is only a single entry visa. if you leave indonesia and want to come back, you need to apply for a new visit visa..

Officials have now installed new digital Entry Gates to get through the immigration in Bali. There are still counters with Immigration Officers in the arrival hall. But with your e-Visa you can get through the immigration using the electronic gates (if they are working and the officials will not guide you towards the counters with immigration officers.

At the electronic gates, you will scan your passport and once you are through you will receive per email an e-KTE, your Visa Stay Permit. It's a PDF that acknowledges your arrival.

Because you will not get a stamp in your passport anymore if you use the e-Gate the system will register your arrival electronically.

If you purchased your Visa upon Arrival (not online) you will can not use the electronic gates and must go to a counter with an immigration officer.

YOU CANNOT GET ANOTHER VISA AFTER YOU HAVE EXTENDED the visa on arrival ONCE (max. 60 days in total), while you are in Indonesia. You would have to leave the country and come pack.

If you want to stay longer than 60 days, you have to get a B211A OFFSHORE Visit Visa (60days) before your arrival first, which is valid for 60 days and which can be extended twice, each extension is valid for another 60 days (total max. 180 days, before you have to leave the country).

B211A Visa Application Service

NO. You need an official passport that is valid AT LEAST 6 months from the day of arrival

Holders of following travel documents CAN NOT get a Visa on Arrival but have to get a 211A 60 days Visit Visa:

Laissez Passer, Titre de voyage, Travel Document, Document of Identity, Certificate of Identity, Alien Passport, Alien Travel Document

Visit Visa for Titre de Voyage, Laissez Passer

If you overstay your visa, you have  to pay a fine of IDR 1,000,000 per day. If you overstayed substantially you might be detained, deported, or banned from coming back to Indonesia for a specific period.

No, you can not apply for any other Visa Type such as a 60 days 211A visa if you have extended your VoA.

As per regulation, travellers on VoA can only extend their VoA for another 30 days (total 60 days of stay permit) and after that travellers must leave the country.

There are several travel regulations you must be aware of which you can find here: Bali Entry Regulations

Note: If you intend to rent a scooter or motorbike you will need to bring your local driving license AND and international driving license. The traffic police has made several statements lately that they will control more often and will issue fines.

If you don't have an international license you can get one here: International Driving License accepted by the Indonesian authorities
