The Best & Worst Times to Visit the US Virgin Islands in 2024

What's the best time to visit the US Virgin Islands?

The best time to visit the US Virgin Islands is from April to June, offering a balance of fewer tourists, comfortable temperatures ranging from 80.6°F to 89°F, and affordable prices. This period falls between the busy peak season and the hurricane season, making it ideal for enjoying outdoor activities and clear blue skies.

The US Virgin Islands are an exciting, lovely, and vibrant destination. Given their exceptional hospitality, cute towns, pleasant nature, and astonishing beaches, they’re one of those must-visit-before-you-die kinds of islands. But when is the best time to visit the US Virgin Islands?

This is largely going to depend on your budget, preferred climate, and other factors. We’ll show you this and more below.

The Best Time to Visit US Virgin Islands

The best time to visit the US Virgin Islands is from April through June. This is when there are fewer tourists, and comfortable temperatures are accompanied by lower prices.

What makes these months the perfect time to visit is that they’re right in the middle between the peak season, which just ended, and the hurricane season that’s yet to begin.

The USVI at this time are ideal for all kinds of outdoor activities, the skies are clear blue, and the sunshine supports all your holiday adventures.

In April, Charlotte Amalie, the capital, sees temperatures fluctuating between an average high of 86°F and an average low of 80°F. May visitors should get ready for temperatures ranging between 87°F and 82°F.

In June, the temperatures vary between 89°F and 84°F. If you want to enjoy the US Virgin Islands to the max, this is the time to do so.

If you’re watching your travel budget, consider visiting the US Virgin Islands either in January and February or in the late-August – mid-November period.

In these off-peak seasons, prices take a nosedive, and your trip is as cheap as it can be (if we can even use the word “cheap” with these islands).

These two periods also see fewer tourists, hence the lower prices. This is the time to search for attractive airfare prices, as well as discounted hotel and resort packages.

January temperatures vary between 84°F and 78°F. The February climate welcomes visitors with the same temperatures — an average high of 84°F and an average low of 79°F. In August, the temperatures fluctuate between 90°F and 84°F.

September sees temperatures with an average high of 89°F and an average low of 84°F. In October, temperatures range between 88°F and 83°F.

Lastly, In November, the temperatures reach an average high of 87°F during the day and an average low of 81°F at night. That said, note that since this period sees fewer crowds, there’s not much going on on the islands either.

But you can always enjoy the beauty of the islands and simply seize the moment. For example, the late summer/autumn period is perfect for those chasing scenic sunsets and early risers who wish to catch the Caribbean sunrise.

Those who want to avoid the big crowds should plan their trip to the US Virgin Islands from mid-April to May in spring or from mid-September to mid-November in autumn.

In spring, as the tourist season slows, not only is it less crowded, but the hotel rates drop as well. The April-May period is also when the St. Thomas Carnival  takes place.

The risk of tropical storms or a hurricane seems to repel travelers, which is why the fall months also see fewer tourists. It goes without saying, but this is also something that you have to keep in mind (more on the hurricane season in a bit).

However, you might get lucky, and the weather still turns out to be gorgeous, allowing you to enjoy the islands without big crowds.

Moreover, in September, kids are back in school, and the weather is cooler, so prices also take a plunge — it’s a win-win for travelers willing to risk facing bad weather but enjoying other benefits such as affordable prices, empty beaches, and a quiet island vibe.

Worst Time to Visit US Virgin Islands

The worst time to visit the islands is during the hurricane season, or from June to November. July is the most humid month, August is said to be the hottest, and October is the rainiest. Perfect travel-repellent combo!

Given their tropical climate, all islands see a lot of sunshine throughout the entire year. The weather is generally nice, even when it rains; there are brief showers and some thunderstorms every now and then.

However, the hurricane season may bring torrential rains and really strong winds, and that’s what makes this season the most challenging one to navigate. What’s more, the winds may lead to high waves and rough seas, which makes it tricky for beachgoers to even enter the water, let alone enjoy it the way they should.

That said, even if you go to the US Virgin Islands during the hurricane season, not everything is lost.

First of all, there’s no guarantee there will be a hurricane at all (but bad storms are more than likely). Secondly, there are many attractions one can see and indoor activities to engage in when the weather’s not at its best.

For instance, you can check out:

  • St. Thomas Synagogue,
  • The Pirates Treasure Museum,
  • Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church,
  • St. John Experience Gallery,
  • Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul,
  • Spa To Go VI, and many others.

Finally, when the weather allows, you can always make your way to some of the well-known June/July festivals, such as St. John Carnival , one of the biggest cultural events on the island.

Then, there’s St. Croix Mango Melee and Tropical Fruit Festival , which celebrates the tropical fruits on the islands.

Things to Consider

What else should you know before you set off? Here are our best US Virgin Islands travel trips:

  • The sea temperature in the US Virgin Islands is warm enough for beachgoers to swim all year round.
  • It’s common to greet locals when you enter/leave a room, go to the shop, or come across people in any context that allows for a brief interaction. Be polite — it means a lot to the islanders, and it just takes two seconds of your time.
  • Don’t be surprised if you see numerous lizards and medium-sized iguanas wandering outdoors freely during your stay.
  • The tipping policy is similar to that of the United States, which means that while 15% to 20% is seen as the standard, tipping more is encouraged for exceptional service.
  • Wearing bath suits outside beach limits marks you as a tourist right away. The US Virgin Islands may allow for a casual dress code, but there’s still a level of conservatism largely present. For example, women may freely wear see-through coverups in most beach restaurants around the world, but it’s not really advisable here.
  • Allow yourself to get adjusted to the islands’ temperature and heat and stay hydrated. Seriously, even if you come from a relatively “hot” country, the island heat hits differently.

So, What’s the Best Time to Visit the USVI?

The best time to visit the US Virgin Islands is undoubtedly from April through June . These months travelers can enjoy the ideal combination of medium-range prices, pleasant temperatures, and manageable crowds.

However, the islands are so magical that chances are you’ll still have an awesome stay, regardless of when you decide to go.

With its tropical climate, friendly locals, white sand beaches, stunning waters, and quaint towns, we believe everyone should visit the US Virgin Islands at least once in their life. Happy travels!

Your Trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands: The Complete Guide

best time to visit us virgin islands

The U.S. Virgin Islands are famed as "America’s Paradise," and you will feel transported to a state of bliss from the moment you land at Cyril E. King International Airport and sip on a Painkiller at the Arrivals gate. While you may not need a passport, there are still other travel elements to consider when planning your visit to the U.S.V.I. —such as how to navigate between each island, when to book your flight, and how best to maximize your vacation budget while there. From logistical information about planning your trip to inter-island transit recommendations—and, of course, where to eat and drink—read on for your ultimate guide to traveling in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Planning Your Trip

  • Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands is between the months of mid-April and July—after the prices have dropped after the peak tourist season in the winter, and before the rains begin to fall more regularly in mid-summer with the arrival of the wet season. For more information on the islands’ weather, read our full-length article on hurricanes in the U.S. Virgin Islands .
  • Language: English. French Creole and Spanish are also commonly spoken on the islands of St. Thomas and St. Croix.
  • Currency: U.S. Dollar
  • Getting Around: There are no ride-share apps like Uber or Lyft available on the islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas, or St. John, but taxis abound on the island (especially in the tourist areas). There is also public transportation via buses and ferries between the islands provided by the VITRAN . Rental cars are also available on all three islands (and many companies are located at the Cyril E. King International Airport on St. Thomas).
  • Travel Tip: The public bus service has limited scheduling later at night, however, and is known to be slightly unreliable in the evenings; so, travelers should plan to get around by taxi in the evening. Hotels can also arrange for drop-offs and pick-ups for guests dining out on the town.

Things to Do

The Virgin Islands are famous for sailing , thanks to both the archipelago’s ideal conditions (the ever-reliable trade winds), as well as the island chain’s mountainous tropical beauty (best observed aboard the bow of a boat, cocktail in hand). While we advocate a sunset sail, you could also opt for a day trip to one of the smaller islets in the U.S.V.I. or venture out to Water Island. Considered the fourth major island in the U.S.V.I., Water Island doesn’t offer much in tourism, as of yet—though it is a worthwhile option for a day trip from St. Thomas. Read below for more ideas on how best to spend your days in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

  • Snorkeling, just like island-hopping above, is a must-do when visiting the U.S.V.I. We suggest swimming in the crystal-clear, tranquil waters off the coast of Waterlemon Cay , Buck Island Reef National Monument , or Jack’s and Isaac’s Bay beaches . But, luckily for travelers everywhere, there’s no bad place to go snorkeling off the coast of St. John, St. Thomas, or St. Croix—encountering rough conditions or murky visibility is quite rare. (Decidedly less rare? Seahorses, starfish, and sea turtles.)
  • Spend a day exploring Virgin Islands National Park , a natural preserve that accounts for over 60 percent of the landmass on the island of St. John. The breathtakingly unspoiled National Park is among the very best in the West Indies—alongside Arikok National Park in Aruba, of course. Visit the gorgeous beaches of Trunk Bay and Cruz Bay.
  • Explore the mountainous terrain with hikes leading travelers up to spectacular views of the surrounding islands (as well as the B.V.I.s and Puerto Rico, too, on a clear day). Some of our favorites include Ram Head Trail, the two-mile Bordeaux Mountain Trail , and Reef Bay Walking Trail in Virgin Islands National Park.

What to Eat and Drink

The U.S. Virgin Islands is quickly attaining world-renown as a foodie destination—thanks, in no small part, to the culinary revolution taking place on the island of St. Croix. For a delectable taste of the local flavors, visit the legendary kitchens of favored St. Croix establishments, such as Savant , balter , Zion Modern Kitchen , and Rumrunners . Though each restaurant cultivates its own distinct palette and ambiance, they all reflect modern-day Crucian cuisine's innovation and excellence.

Head to Pie Whole Pizza in St. Thomas for some excellent pizza (the restaurant received a 2018 TripSavvy Editors’ Choice Award for best pizza restaurant) and even more excellent beer. From Trappist ales to Imperial Stouts, this place is a beer lover's paradise. But, if you’re more of a wine-lover than a beer-drinker, fear not: The eclectic wine menu at The Terrace in St. John is more than enough reason to extend your late-night dinner even later into the evening to enjoy some after-dinner refreshments. (The Terrace’s acclaimed wine menu has been recognized with a Wine Spectator Award). Plus, the restaurant’s romantic atmosphere overlooking Cruz Bay is more than enough reason to stay awhile. (Or at least another round). And, speaking of another round, the diversity of options on the extensive wine menu at Bella Blu in Frenchtown is more than deserving of a second look (or a third). Cheers!

Where to Stay

The first decision to make when deciding where to stay in the U.S. Virgin Islands is to choose which island is the right fit for your vacation desires. The U.S.V.I. is composed of three main islands, each of which is known for its unique allure: St. Croix (the culinary scene), St. John (pristine nature), and St. Thomas (exciting nightlife). In St. Croix, we recommend checking in at the Pink Fancy Hotel in Christiansted. The legendary Caribbean inn boasts a unique charm and is in the perfect location for travelers to check out St. Croix’s famous restaurants and cafes. If you’re opting for a vacation in St. Thomas—and looking for luxury and relaxation—then look no further than the Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas (and book yourself a spa day). Finally, for total immersion in nature and the accompanying tropical bliss, rent one of the many spectacular villas available for weekenders in St. John.

Getting There

Though there are two international airports located in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Cyril E. King International Airport (STT) in St. Thomas offers the most options for international flights. It is also one of the busiest hubs in the Eastern Caribbean. Located just east of the island’s capital, Charlotte Amalie, STT offers direct flights for U.S. travelers arriving from eight cities in the U.S.: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dulles, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Newark, and New York. Additionally, there is another international airport in St. Croix, the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport, a smaller operation that offers direct flights to Atlanta, Boston, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, and New York, for U.S. travelers.

  • Cyril E. King International Airport: The largest international airport in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Cyril E. King International Airport (STT) is located on the southwest coast of St. Thomas and offers direct flights from the U.S. via American, Delta, JetBlue, Spirit, and United.
  • Henry E Rohlsen Airport: Located on the island of St. Croix, six miles southwest of Christiansted, the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (HERA) offers direct flights from the U.S. via domestic carriers such as American Airlines, Delta, and Spirit.

U.S. Virgin Islands Culture and History

The U.S. Virgin Islands celebrates its unique culture and history with a plethora of festivals and events held annually on the islands of St. John, St. Thomas, and St. Croix. Of all these festivities, however, none compare to the spectacle and exuberance of Carnival. Though Carnival was celebrated as early as 1912, it became an annual event in 1952. Expect dancing, amazing food, and spectacular costumes. Carnival begins in St. Thomas in April, St. John in late June, and St. Croix from December through January. There is a myriad of festivals and activities on St. Croix in conjunction with the holiday season: The Crucian Christmas Festival kicks off on the first Saturday in December and features parties until the first Saturday of the New Year. Events include the annual St. Croix Boat Parade , as well as New Year’s Eve fireworks. The biggest Christmas event in St. Thomas is the Miracle on Main Street , which features carolers, local crafts and artwork, and steel pan Christmas cheer.

Money-Saving Tips

  • Visit in the off-season. Despite what residents of northern climes might think, the summertime in the U.S. Virgin Islands actually isn’t too swelteringly hot—thanks to trade winds, the islands enjoy temperatures in the 70s to 80s throughout the year. Additionally, fall in the U.S. Virgin Islands offers remarkable deals on airfare and luxuriously crowd-free beaches and restaurants.
  • Whenever you travel to the Caribbean, you should consult our monthly event calendar , as well as our scheduling guide to Carnival on each island to see if your visit overlaps with any of the festivities. These annual street parades and live music are available to all guests and locals, free of charge.
  • Check to see if the service fee is included in your hotel or restaurant bill; otherwise, similar to the U.S., a 15 to 20 percent tip is customary.
  • Consider booking an all-inclusive resort to minimize the cost of food and drink during your Virgin Islands vacation for larger groups—and consult our guide on exploring the U.S. Virgin Islands on a budget.

Best and Worst Times to Visit U.S. Virgin Islands

The best times to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands are December through April during the dry season. The warmer months of March and April are even better.

But the best times also depend on what visitors plan to do when they get there. Some months are better than others for spending time on the beaches and in the water.

The worst times to visit St. Thomas and the U.S. Virgin Islands are September through November. These months fall inside the heart of the Virgin Islands hurricane season, also known as the rainy season.

The U.S. Virgin Islands rely heavily on tourism to sustain their economy. The islands welcome nearly 700,000 visitors each year by air and more than 1 million by sea, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

The island chain is one of the most visited in the Caribbean. The majority of cruise visitors go to St. Thomas while hotel visitors go to St. Thomas and St. John.

The Dry Season

The dry season in the U.S. Virgin Islands runs from December to May, although May usually has higher rainfall than the other dry season months.

Many tourists choose to visit the islands at this time because of the likelihood of sunny weather and the elimination of hurricane threat. The annual Caribbean hurricane season begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30 every year. September and October are the most active months for tropical storms and hurricanes.

Nearly 60 percent of tourists to the U.S. Virgin Islands come between December and May, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization. The peak tourist month is March during spring break from schools. December is a popular time for visitors for the same reason.

It rains very little during the dry season with an average of about two inches a month, according to the U.S. National Weather Service. May receives the most rain of the dry months, averaging just over three inches. That’s still moderate for a Caribbean island.

Virgin Islands Hurricane Season

The St. Thomas hurricane season officially begins June 1 and goes through the end of November at the same time as the Caribbean hurricane season. Tourism declines during this time because of the threat of bad weather.

September is the least popular month for visitors to come to the islands, followed by October. These two months are usually the worst months in the Caribbean for hurricanes, tropical storms and heavy rains. In the Virgin Islands, rainfall averages five to six inches a month from September through November or more than double the amount of the dry season.

Average Monthly Temperatures

Average daytime temperatures range from 85 degrees Fahrenheit in January to 90 degrees from July through September, according to the U.S. National Weather Service.

Average nighttime temperatures range from 72 degrees Fahrenheit in January to 78 from June through September. Seawater temperatures stay between the daytime highs and nighttime lows. Swimming is usually comfortable for every month of the year, although there are some exceptions during cooler days.

These numbers are historical averages. Visitors may find that actual temperatures (and rain) vary somewhat from the averages.

Most and Least Popular Times to Visit

The chart to the right using data from the Caribbean Tourism Organization clearly shows that the most popular times to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands are March and December. March is popular because of spring break from schools; December is popular because of holiday vacations as well as winter break from schools.

The least popular time to visit is September, followed by October, during the worst months of the Caribbean hurricane season.

Other Tips on When to Visit

Although December through April are the best times to visit because of comfortable temperatures and low risk of rain, some travel planners may want other options.

Fewer crowds and lower prices can make rainy season months seem more appealing. But the threat of hurricanes can make travel during this time a risky bet. It’s a better option for last-minute vacations after reviewing the 10-day forecast.

June: Best Time For Swimming

The month of June sees warmer waters and weather, with temperatures averaging around  89℉ to 78℉.  Luckily there is not too much rain this time of year as well, with a low average of  2.5 inches of precipitation.

Best Time to Visit the US Virgin Islands: Season by Season Guide

Stunning white sand beach on Buck Island - best time to visit US Virgin Islands

This post may contain affiliate links, meaning if you buy or book through one of these links, I may earn a small commission .

The US Virgin Islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix are some of the most popular vacation destinations in the Caribbean.  This is especially true for American citizens, who do not need a passport to enter.  If you’re thinking of vacationing in the US Virgin islands, this detailed guide will help you choose the best time of year to visit.

The best season to vacation in the US Virgin Islands is different for everyone. While winter is the most popular time for a Caribbean getaway, it also brings high prices and crowds.  You may not mind the hot summer temperatures or rainy fall weather in order to find better deals and quieter beaches.

I’ve visited the US Virgin Islands in all seasons but fall (although I did technically visit the Caribbean for a fall honeymoon ).  Surprisingly, I have no particular bias towards any season, as each has its own perks.

With that, here is my guide to the best time of year to visit the US Virgin Islands. I’ve also included general sunrise and sunset viewing times, so you can book restaurant reservations or find pretty viewing spots during golden hour. That said, daylight hours are pretty consistent year-round.

Best Time to Visit the US Virgin Islands

The beaches and weather in the US Virgin Islands are generally amazing all year round. Therefore, it might seem like I’ve written more cons than pros, as that is often what sets each season apart. That said, I made sure to list some fun events that occur only during each particular season.

Spring is often considered to be the best time to visit the US Virgin Islands. While March begins with high season, the crowds will be dwindling by mid-May.  Temperatures remain comfortable before the summer heat sets in, and inflated winter prices begin to decrease.

April can still be a pricey month, but May and June are often more affordable, and generally do not book up as quickly as in high season. However, the cooling winter breeze will also gradually disappear, leaving stifling heat behind by late spring.

Warmer sea temperatures also mean the beginning of the annual Sargassum season. Late April is typically when this smelly seaweed begins to arrive at some of the beaches.  Upon our recent visit to St. Croix in early June, the Sargassum had already piled up in some spots, though most popular beaches were seaweed-free.

One awesome perk of a spring US Virgin Island vacation is seeing the vibrant red flamboyant trees in full bloom.  This only happens between May and September, and the way these trees pop against the green hillsides is absolutely stunning.

Finally, those traveling to St. Croix should note that Sandy Point Beach closes for turtle nesting between April 1st and September 1st each year. Sandy Point is known to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the US Virgin Islands, so if a visit is at the top of your bucket list, plan your St. Croix trip during fall or winter instead.

Sunrise/Sunset: Around 12 to 13 hours of daylight. Sunrise is around 6:20am in mid-March and around 5:45am in mid-June.  Sunset is around 6:30pm in mid-March and close to 7pm by late June.

Spring Events:

  • U.S. Virgin Islands Transfer Day – March 31st
  • St. Thomas Carnival – Second largest Caribbean Carnival, runs for a month around April/May
  • St. Thomas International Regatta
  • St. Croix International Regatta

Flamboyant Tree near Drake's Peak on St Thomas - best time to visit US Virgin Islands

If you don’t mind the strong sun, summer can be a wonderful time of year to visit the US Virgin Islands. The crowds and prices are low compared to winter, and the sticky weather makes you want to jump right into the sparkling turquoise water. Plus, the gorgeous red flamboyant trees will still be popping against the tropical blues.

While hurricane season technically starts June 1st, it doesn’t normally pick up until August.  That said, it’s always a good idea to make flexible plans in case a storm pops up unexpectedly. We just missed getting caught in a storm late July one year, where cancelled ferry schedules would have stranded us on St. John.

Additionally, summer is when Sahara Desert dust storms periodically blow dirt particles from Africa all the way across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. Although this makes for some interesting sunset colors, the dust does degrade air quality, and can be problematic for those with vulnerable respiratory systems.

Summer is also tricky for fully enjoying the hiking trails in the US Virgin Islands, as the thick heat often makes conditions more taxing and unpleasant. Morning or well-shaded hikes are best, and always bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water.

Finally, summer brings peak Sargassum seaweed levels at certain beaches.  While most US Virgin Island beaches remain unaffected, beaches like Brown Bay and Jumbie Bay on St. John, to name a couple, are less than desirable.

Sunrise/Sunset: Begins with around 13 hours of daylight in June and shortens to around 12 by September.  Sunrise is around 5:45am in mid-June and around 6:10am by mid-September.  Sunset is around 7pm in late June, and around 6:17pm by mid-September.

Summer Events:

  • St. John Carnival – Month-long event with festivities leading up to Emancipation Day and July 4th
  • Virgin Islands Emancipation Day – July 3rd
  • Independence Day – July 4th
  • Mango Melee and Tropical Fruit Festival – St Croix

A fall visit to the US Virgin Islands will either be peaceful as could be or full of drama. This is because fall kicks off with hurricane season in full swing.  Therefore, I do not recommend an early fall visit unless you are willing to accept this uncertainty.

That said, depending on how the cards fall, your trip could just as easily be storm-free, allowing you to enjoy bargain prices and empty beaches. However, there are still some drawbacks to keep in mind. Many restaurants and boat charter companies close through at least October.

If you are dreaming of a day spent island hopping, another season might work better for you. However, with St. Croix being forty miles south of the other US Virgin Islands, island hopping is not as much of a thing. Therefore, the lack of day sails may not be as important if St. Croix is your destination.

If you are fine with a low key vacation that primarily consists of beach visits and nature hikes, then definitely feel free to visit in September. Just be sure to book flexible! After all, this is the month when Category 5 Hurricanes Irma and Maria tore through the US Virgin Islands in 2017.

For a bit more certainty during a fall trip to the US Virgin Islands, a November visit is the sweet spot. Most restaurants will have opened back up and you’ll still be traveling before the mad holiday rush begins.

Sunrise/Sunset: Around 12 to 11 hours of daylight.  Sunrise is around 6:10am in mid-September and around 6:45am in mid-December.  Sunset is around 6:17pm in mid-September and around 5:50pm in mid-December.

Fall Events:

  • Skinny Legs Halloween Party – St. John
  • Coral Bay Yacht Club Thanksgiving Regatta – St. John
  • Taste of St Croix – November/December

Girl standing in sea foam in Caribbean Sea - best time to visit US Virgin Islands

Beginning with New Year’s Eve, the winter months are high season in the US Virgin Islands. Expect crowds and prices to be high, especially over New Year’s, which is the busiest and most expensive week of the year.

If you can afford the price tag, winter is a very exciting and fun time of year to be in the islands and escape the cold.  Just be sure to book everything well in advance – at least eight to twelve months. Also expect to have plenty of company, as there will be lots of cruise ship traffic coming in on St. Thomas and St. Croix.

Despite the crowds, winter is still the best time to visit the US Virgin Islands to escape cold weather, enjoy gentle sea breezes, and admire the mega yachts as they pull into the bays. Some brief showers are normal, but overall the weather is usually sunny and perfect for the beach.  These conditions are lovely for hiking, especially on St. John where Virgin Islands National Park contains more than twenty trails.

For a winter trip, make restaurant reservations and book excursions like day sails in advance.  Also, remember to be very patient with wait staff at bars and restaurants. Island time is already slower than what you may be used to, and with staff shortages and heaps of visitors, it’s normal for service to get backed up.

Sunrise/Sunset:  Between 11 to 12 hours of daylight.  Sunrise is around 6:45am in mid-December and around 6:20am by mid-March.  Sunset is around 5:50pm in mid-December and closer to 6:30pm by mid-March.

Winter Events:

  • Crucian Christmas Festival (St. Croix Carnival)
  • NYE parties at various bars and restaurants
  • Water Island Music Festival
  • 8 Tuff Miles
  • Mardi Gras Parade (Mardi Croix) – St. Croix

If you’re deciding on the best time to visit the US Virgin Islands, each of these seasons has unique perks to offer. Whether you seek the excitement of New Year’s Eve or a low key late fall visit, you’re in for a gorgeous Caribbean vacation.

Wondering when you should plan a vacation to the US Virgin Islands? Depending on your ideal US Virgin Islands itinerary, you may prefer summer if you are traveling with kids or winter for the perfect honeymoon. This post breaks down the pros and cons of each season to help you determine the best time to plan your trip to the US Virgin Islands.

U.S. Virgin Islands   Travel Guide

best time to visit us virgin islands

Why Go To U.S. Virgin Islands

The U.S. Virgin Islands are "America's Caribbean Paradise" – the place to see moko jumbies (stilt walkers) dance at a Carnival parade, hear the lilting patois of a Creole dialect or smell the spices in a saltfish pate (all without losing cell phone reception). You can visit either St. Thomas, St. John or St. Croix, or better yet, spend a little time on all three islands. That way you'll get plenty of pampering, undisturbed nature and colonial history jammed into one vacation.

Each island offers something different. Called "Rock City" for its hilly, craggy horizon, St. Thomas is known for luxury – from the megayachts moored in the harbor to the high-end storefronts along Main Street. Located a short ferry ride east, St. John appeals to honeymooners and nature lovers, with more than 7,000 acres of dedicated parkland , along with pristine beaches. Way down south in the Caribbean Sea, St. Croix allows visitors to explore the islands' colonial heritage and the history of slavery at several different forts and plantations. Plus, it's on this island that you'll find the Cruzan Rum Distillery.

A visit to the islands now may look a little different than it did several years ago. Hurricanes Maria and Irma devastated the islands, leaving homes and hotels either uninhabitable or severely damaged. However, since 2017 the region has taken great strides in restoring itself and is happily welcoming visitors once again. So, if you're in need of a beachy vacation, don't hesitate to book your trip.

U.S. Virgin Islands Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands is April to June, when you can expect mild weather and very little rainfall. In the USVI's peak season, from December to March, the temperature ranges from the mid-70s to high 80s with breezy evenings. July to October is the region's hurricane season with average temps in the upper 80s.

Weather in U.S. Virgin Islands

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

Learn the proper greeting  Say "good morning," "good afternoon" and "good night" to locals when you enter or exit a room. They consider these phrases friendlier greetings than "hello."

You're in the island sun  Take it easy your first day on the islands to avoid heat stroke. And always apply sunscreen before venturing out.

You need special sunscreen In March 2020, the U.S. Virgin Islands banned the use and possession of sunscreen that contains oxybenzone, octinoxate and octocrylene to protect its prized ecosystem. Sunscreens labeled "reef safe" are likely free of these three ingredients, but always check the label to be sure.

You'll see island critters  Lizards and medium-sized iguanas roam freely outdoors.

How to Save Money in U.S. Virgin Islands

Book early It's possible to secure a good deal at one of the USVI's four-star hotels in the peak season, but you should start looking for a room up to a year in advance.

Visit in spring April and May hotel rates are lower, plus you'll get your Caribbean vacation in before the sticky, wet summer.

Take an Eastern Caribbean cruise St. Thomas is one of the busiest ports in the Caribbean, and the top cruises generally dock for up to eight hours. That'll give you time to explore Rock City or even take a ferry to St. John.

Culture & Customs

Similar to the residents of other Caribbean islands, Virgin Islanders dress casually but conservatively. Wearing a bathing suit — or even sandals — anywhere besides the beach marks you as a tourist.

Since these islands are territories of the United States, their currency is the U.S. dollar. Overall, tipping etiquette is the same in the Virgin Islands as in other parts of the United States; 15 to 20% is considered the standard, but more is appreciated for exceptional service.

What to Eat

The U.S. Virgin Islands offer an assortment of restaurant options that range from white tablecloth establishments to affordable diners and fast-food joints. For a tasty meal on St. Thomas, head to restaurants in Frenchtown or Red Hook. On St. John, Cruz Bay is the place to be. There are also a handful of suitable options on St. Croix's West End.

Most restaurants in those areas will give you the coddling tourist experience, but you might also find the opportunity to try a local dish. Look for menu options like pate (ground beef, chicken or salted cod wrapped and deep-fried in dough), johnnycake (deep-fried dough), fungi (corn meal) or peas and rice (kidney beans or lentils with brown rice) to eat like a Virgin Islander.

St. Thomas is a major commercial hub and a very busy cruise port, and therefore susceptible to tourist-targeted crime. Additionally, there is a presence of violent crime on this island, though you'll see fewer violent crimes on St. Croix and St. John. Take a taxi if possible, and if you have a rental car, keep it locked. Limit your travels at night – particularly in Charlotte Amalie, Christiansted and Frederiksted – and don't travel alone.

You should also safeguard your skin. The heat in the Caribbean can certainly be luxurious, but also scorching. Always remember to apply sunscreen before venturing out and reapply frequently if you'll be outside all day. (Know, too, that the U.S. Virgin Islands has banned sunscreen that contains oxybenzone, octinoxate and octocrylene.) Use insect repellent in the evenings when the islands' "no-see-ums" (tiny gnats) like to bite.

Getting Around U.S. Virgin Islands

The best way to get around any U.S. Virgin Island is in a car – either your own rental or a taxi. You can rent a car at or nearby one of the islands' two airports: the Cyril E. King Airport (STT) on St. Thomas and the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX) on St. Croix. Ferries from St. Thomas are the most efficient way of getting to St. John (which has no airport) or even the British Virgin Islands .

Taking a cruise is also a popular way to travel to the Virgin Islands – in fact, St. Thomas is one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean. Although its port is less busy, you can also take a cruise to St. Croix. Popular lines to visit both islands include Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean .

Entry & Exit Requirements

Although a passport is not required to travel between the United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands, you must bring a passport if you're planning to visit the British Virgin Islands during your stay. Visit the U.S. State Department's website for more information on entry and exit requirements.
