Know before you go

How comfortable speedboat ride is.

Keep in mind that if the weather isn’t idyllic, the speedboat ride can get a bit bumpy due to the rougher sea conditions. For this reason, we don’t recommend this tour for pregnant women or anyone with back or neck problems. In addition, as Mother Nature is in control of the weather, there is a possibility that the departure time will have to be changed to an earlier or later time, or the itinerary may have to be slightly changed to ensure a safe and most pleasant ride possible. Our goal is to ensure the best possible experience for every passenger, with every action aimed towards your safety and satisfaction.

How to be safe while snorkelling and swimming?

It’s important to be extra cautious when snorkelling or swimming as the sea that surrounds our islands is so clear that the depth seems less than it really is. We want to you be safe so that you can return home unharmed and filled with happy memories of your time in Croatia.

Any chances we'll see dolphins?

Our tours aren’t just about the destination. While cruising the Adriatic, dolphin sightings are frequent as the intelligent, curious animals choose to inhabit only the clearest, most pristine seas, something that we’re quite proud of here in Croatia. With so much experience out on these waters, our skipper is very good at spotting them and will slow down or make a short stop so that everyone can capture photos or just enjoy the moment. Of course, you’ll want to keep a close eye out too as it’s always fun to be the first one to call out “dolphins at 11:00!”

What should we bring?

We’ll provide wind jackets in case it gets cool while we’re out on the water. Even on hot summer days it can be cool in the early morning hours or later in the evening as we make our return. As the sun can get quite intense in between, we recommend that you bring sunscreen, ideally without biologically toxic chemicals that can harm the sea or marine life, such as non-nano titanium dioxide sunscreens or one that is zinc based without oxybenzone and octinoxate. You’ll also want sunglasses and a hat that can be secured so that it doesn’t fly off, a bathing suit, towel and change of clothing. If you have expensive electronic equipment like a camera, you might want to carry it in a “dry” bag to keep it protected from the saltwater. As there will be opportunities for purchasing food and drink, you may want to bring some cash (kuna) just in case you want to enjoy one of the smaller, local restaurants or bars that don’t accept credit cards.

What should we know about Trogir?

Trogir is surely one of the most popular yachting spots in Croatia, but it seems like it was popular in ancient times too. Remains of stone weapons were found in one cave near this ancient city and they were estimated to be 45,000 years old. Trogir was once the home of many empires and Roman Emperor Claudius even built villas for his noble war veterans so that they could enjoy their retirement days surrounded by the area’s magnificent beauty.

When Bela IV, the King of Hungary and Croatia from 1235 to 1270 escaped the battlefield after his army had been annihilated by the Mongols, he went on the run, hiding in various places, including Trogir. In 1242, the Taters yelled out to residents in the Croatia language, commanding that they extradite him, but after devastating much of the country they eventually withdrew. Less than three decades later, Trogir became the very first town in Europe to have its own pharmacy, which opened to the public in 1271. It was located within the homes that sit next to the town loggia and cathedral. By visiting the Trogir Museum, you can see a copy of the original document that supports this claim.

Around the turn-of-the-20th-century, Trogir recorded the visits of a number of Nobel Prize winners and famous writers like Bernard Shaw and Anatole France, leading to its international appreciation as a tourist destination.

How To Visit The Blue Lagoon From Split, Croatia (+ Why You Should!)

Of all the bucket list destinations in Croatia, the Blue Lagoon is surely one of the most beautiful!

As I arrived at the Blue Lagoon on my tour from Split, I could hardly believe my eyes. The water was the clearest and bluest I had ever seen! With the summer sun beating down on us, the thought of taking a dip to cool off was unbelievably inviting.

Although there are numerous ‘blue lagoons’ in Croatia, the Blue Lagoon everybody knows is actually called Krknjasi Bay, and it’s between the Dalmatian islands of Veliki and Krknjasi.

Going for a swim or a snorkel at the Blue Lagoon is a must-do for any visitors to Croatia. The issue is, it can be tricky to work out how to even get there. Since the Blue Lagoon is a shallow patch of water in between two remote islands, it’s hardly as simple as catching the train!

Small boat on the clear waters of Krknjasi Bay, also known as the Blue Lagoon, one of the best places to snorkel in Croatia.

I loved my visit to the Blue Lagoon Croatia – in fact, I loved it that much that I went there twice! I firmly believe that a quick trip to the Blue Lagoon from Split is a must-do whilst you’re in Croatia.

So, here’s everything you need to know to plan a trip to the Blue Lagoon for yourself!

Top tip: Can I use Euros in Croatia ? Yep! As of 1 January 2023 the currency in Croatia is now the Euro. All prices in this post are listed in Euros.

Table of Contents

Where Is the Blue Lagoon in Croatia?

The Blue Lagoon is the name given to Krknjasi Bay , or the Krknjasi Lagoon, which lies off the east coast of the island Veli Drvenik. Its calm blue waters are sheltered by the neighbouring islands of Veliki and Krknjasi.

These islands are very remote, so if you want to visit the Blue Lagoon, the best place to stay in Croatia is the city of Split.

The Blue Lagoon is around 14 miles southwest of Split, which is a 30-minute journey by speedboat. If you’re heading to the Blue Lagoon from outside of Split, it’s six miles southwest of Trogir.

Pretty much every tour that takes you to the Blue Lagoon from Split also has an option for you to depart from Trogir, but it’s worth double checking to be sure!

How to Get to the Blue Lagoon From Split or Trogir

Unless you hire a boat and navigate the way there yourself (something I don’t recommend) travelling to the Blue Lagoon independently isn’t possible. For this reason, you’ll have to take a tour.

From Split, there are a few different boat tours which make stops at the Blue Lagoon. Two of these are the 3 islands tour and the 5 islands tour . The 3 islands tour is a half-day tour, and the 5-islands tour is a full-day tour.

I first went on this 5 islands tour , as it seemed like better value for money and you get to see more islands. This is the best Blue Lagoon tour. I loved the tour so much that I actually went on this 3 islands tour too so that I could continue my Croatian Island Hopping love affair!

This meant I visited the Blue Lagoon twice . Lucky me!

In case you’re undecided here is a comparison of the two tours:

After taking both tours, I highly recommend taking the 5 islands tour. It’s about a million times better. You can read my full review about it here!

Still fancy the 3 island tour? I got you – check out my review here!

The islands you visit on the 5 islands tour are much more interesting and varied. It also includes visiting Hvar , my favourite island!). In addition, the 5 islands tour includes a visit to the Blue Cave and Stiniva Beach , two of Croatia’s most popular tourist destinations.

As if you needed more persuading, the 5 islands tour is longer, meaning you spend more time on the open waves island hopping. Who wouldn’t want that?

Private Boat Trips to the Blue Lagoon

Don’t want to share your day with a bunch of strangers? I’ve got you. If you’re travelling in a group, with friends or family, it often works out cheaper to go on a private boat tour.

Private boat tours from Split to the Blue Lagoon typically follow the same itineraries as the group tours, but you’ll get more flexibility with timings and stops. Here are your options!

  • Private 5-Island Tour from Split (including Blue Cave, Blue Lagoon & Hvar)
  • Private 3-Island Tour from Split

Why You Need to Visit The Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon in Croatia, with the islands of islands of Veliki and Krknjasi in the background. The Blue Lagoon is just a short trip away from Split, making it a popular day trip.

The pictures kind of say it all.

You need to visit the Blue Lagoon because it’s just so darn gorgeous !

With water so clear it could be glass, and its gorgeous blue hue (it’s the blue lagoon for a reason), it’d be impossible to label the Blue Lagoon anything other than a paradise. You’ll feel a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of Split!

The main reason you should visit the Blue Lagoon is to swim and snorkel . The sandy ocean floor (unusual for Croatia!) and shallow crystal clear waters make this the perfect spot to snorkel and see what sea life you can find.

The Blue Lagoon is one of the most popular places to visit near Split . This means you’ll very rarely be the only visitors there. I didn’t find that affected my experience, though, as the Lagoon has plenty of space for visitors to spread out and the different boats don’t get too near to each other.

Some Blue Lagoon boat trips moor on the island, whereas others drop anchor further out so that it’s deep enough to jump into the lagoon from the boat.

Ella visiting the Blue Lagoon on a boat tour from the town of Split in Croatia.

My favourite thing to do at the Blue Lagoon was to jump off the back of our speedboat and plunge into the cold water. It’s something that never gets old!

Given how hot Croatia gets in the summer, the water was surprisingly cold when I jumped in. It was unbelievably refreshing, and the perfect way to cool off and relax.

You don’t need to pack anything special to visit the Blue Lagoon that I haven’t already mentioned in my Croatia packing list .

It’s super important to choose the right Blue Lagoon tour (something I’ll help with at the end of this post) as some tours are far better than others!

For example, the tour I went on had a sun lounging area on the back of our speedboat. This meant we could lounge and dry off under the sun on the back of the boat. It was a fun way to add a bit of luxury to the trip!

If your boat doesn’t have a sun lounging area, you can still swim to the island for a bit of sunbathing. The beaches are pebble beaches though, so it might be pretty uncomfortable.

There is a bar on the beach, though. If you want to toast your visit to the Blue Lagoon with a beer in the sun I definitely won’t blame you!

You’ll usually have between 1 hour and 90 minutes to spend at the Blue Lagoon on your tour. This is the perfect amount of time to do some swimming, sunbathing and snorkelling without feeling rushed.

The clear waters of the Blue Lagoon in Croatia.

Most tours to the Blue Lagoon include snorkel gear hire, so you won’t miss exploring its underwater world. There’s no doubt about it – the Blue Lagoon is one of the best places to snorkel in Croatia!

Best Time of Day to Visit Blue Lagoon

The best time of day to take a trip to the Blue Lagoon from Split (or Trogir!) is in the morning, before the heat gets too intense and before all the people who hired their own boat for the day get there too.

Many 5 Island and 3 Island tours depart early in the morning and make the Blue Lagoon one of their first stops for this very reason. On my 3 Islands tour I arrived at the Blue Lagoon at around 10am, and it was delightfully quiet.

On my 5 Islands tour, we arrived at the Blue Lagoon at around 1pm, and it was fairly busy by then, but luckily our boat captain managed to find a relatively peaceful area for us to stop off at.

Beautiful island and beach in Europe

If you’re travelling through Croatia or just on a trip to Split, you absolutely have to jump on a tour to get to the Blue Lagoon! It’s one of the best experiences Croatia has to offer, and getting there is also part of the fabulous experience!

Until next time!

"Amazing holiday in Croatia"

Didn’t know that my holiday in Split would be so dramatic, blue lagoon tour from split just made my day and filled up my memory with unforgettable loving memories. Highly recommend this tour if you want to boost your fun during vacations.

"Blue Lagoon from Split"

Blue Lagoon from Split has been an exceptional experience of my tourist life. The journey from Split to Blue Lagoon is as admirable as the destinations of the tour. However, you must have the true spirit of tourism if you want to book a package. The tour seems to be made for those who have enthusiasm for remote places.

"Blue Lagoon & Trogir"

Just heard about this amazing tour while wandering on the beach in Split and booked a ride. It was more than what I expected. Two awesome destinations the Blue Lagoon Island and the Trogir, and a breathtaking sail-in Adriatic Sea. I didn’t waste my time experiencing this magical tour. Recommended especially for international tourists.

Croatia’s second-largest city, Split (Spalato in Italian) is a great place to see Dalmatian life as it’s really lived. Always buzzing, this exuberant city has just the right balance of tradition and modernity. Step inside Diocletian’s Palace (a Unesco World Heritage site and one of the world’s most impressive Roman monuments) and you’ll see dozens of bars, restaurants and shops thriving amid the atmospheric old walls where Split life has been humming along for thousands of years.

Boat Excursion Split

Trogir is a remarkable example of urban continuity. The orthogonal street plan of this island settlement dates back to the Hellenistic period and it was embellished by successive rulers with many fine public and domestic buildings and fortifications. Its beautiful Romanesque churches are complemented by the outstanding Renaissance and Baroque buildings from the Venetian period.

The tip was very well run with excellent staff on board. Each of the stops are wonderful and the towns were lovely with time to stop and take a walk around. The lunch on the boat was fresh and served with a smile.

Lara Meg – February 26, 2021

My boyfriend and I took a trio in August. It was the only company that has Trogir included in trip and drinks like coca cola, fanta etc… We had a great time and staff was soo friendly and we felt soo comfortable. Next year see you again!

Carol R – February 26, 2021

Just back from a brilliant day out to Blue Lagoon with Bura Line. Lots of swimming, sunning ourselves on boat, good food – fish was outstanding – plenty to drink and chilled water melon in afternoon. Blue Laggon and other stops were as advertised and whole trip ran really well. Well worth the money for us and put teenagers.

blue lagoon tour from split

The Blue Lagoon Split is one of those top destinations you must put on your bucket list. It is in the Krknjaši bay, just outside the town of Trogir. The Island of Veli Drvenik and two smaller islands form the lagoon in which a clear and turquoise sea can be seen. A boat trip to the Blue Lagoon is a perfect way to spend a day with your family, eating fresh fish and swimming all day long. Visit the attractive Blue Lagoon with its crystal-clear sea and the historic city of Trogir on a speed boat.

Half-day boat trips from Split are very popular. You can choose between the morning tour and the afternoon tour. The morning tour starts at 9:30 and the afternoon tour begins at 14:30. If you are looking for a relaxing activity to do in Split, especially if you are limited with time, this is a perfect trip for you. The duration of the trip is 4 hours and 30 minutes. Hop in a speed boat and enjoy the wind in your hair! The boats we utilize for this tour have a capacity of 8 to 12 people. During the 30-minute speed boat ride you can enjoy a panoramic view of Split and the islands before you arrive in Trogir, the Little Venice of Dalmatia or as some call it The Stone Beauty. Trogir is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and it is one of the best examples of Romanesque-Gothic architecture. There is history written in the stones of its streets and squares. One of the highlights worth visiting is the Trogir cathedral of St.Lovro, carved by Master Radovan in the 13th century. While walking the old town you will inevitably notice two city fortresses both built by Venetians as a naval base for their forces in this part of the Adriatic. The first one is Fortress Kamerlengo situated on the west end of the islet. Nowadays, the fortress is a multimedia center with an open-air cinema and stage for various cultural events. Enjoy your walk within the maze of stone streets along with the promenade and notable spots such as Town Gate, Town Hall, Ćipiko Palace, Trogir Museum and many others. Have lunch in some of the restaurants serving traditional Dalmatian food. After a 15-minute ride you will arrive in your summer hotspot the Blue Lagoon. We will provide you with snorkeling equipment so that you can explore the bottom of the sea in this paradise, as the water is very transparent. Then relax while sunbathing on the boat or on the pebble beach surrounded by pine trees. Far away from the city crowds take a drink at a bar or eat at a restaurant on the coast right near the sea. Do not forget to bring your camera for amazing pictures in this hidden, untouched piece of nature.
