I'm starting to get the hang of the various functions on our new Yaris.

The Cruise control took a bit of getting used to, especially as I didn't realize the switch was of the two-way rocker type.

The one with the speed limiter is a little different, and useful (for instance) where there are road works with multiple cameras.

I was trying to explain how it works to a friend, and he said it's something he would never use as it's downright dangerous.

I can't say that I agree. If it were, it wouldn't be fitted. Thought's anyone  ?

FROSTYBALLS

We have had cruise control/speed limiter on our last two i20's and speed limiter on our Aygo. We find cruise really useful on motorway journeys (especially on our annual trips to Skye - journey of 520+ miles), and, the speed limiter when travelling through average speed cameras/road works.

Can take a bit of getting used to initially, but perfectly safe.

I almost always use the cruise control on motorway jouneys. I think it's safer that not using it. I drove tired the other day and it jolted me awake my slowing down a couple of times when i got too close to the vehicle in front.

Our last several cars since a previous 09 (I think) Yaris (Mini, Smart, Jeep, Hyundai) have had cruise control/speed limiter. Recently got an 18 plate Yaris with CC, but absolutely amazed and disappointed that it doesn't have the limiter function.  😠

It also doesn't display what CC speed is set, so 'Set' is a stab in the murk and 'Resume' a gamble.

I never even thought about it until after I collected it and found out. I don't know if it would have been a deal-breaker if I'd realised sooner, but it's amazing how a simple thing like that can take the shine off a car.

By-the-by, of all those cars the Mini had the most outstanding interface for, and operation of, the CC/Limit. Really intuitive and easy to use without having to think much, and accurate in operation. Jeep and Smart were/are terrible, Hyundai ... meh.

Maybe i shouldn't have said that on an internet forum!

HELP help please for fruitcake sake

I this years Yaris cross and I just cannot understand how to operate cruise control with the steering wheel controls.

Please it is driving, no pun intended, CRAZY.

On the right side of steering wheel there's a two way button with an odometer icon and a lever with RES/SET.   Push it up and you should see a message on center display indicating that cruise control / radar is ready.  Reach the speed you want to mantain and push the lever down ( SET ).  The CC is engaged.  You can fine tune the speed with RES ( increment speed ) an SET ( decrement speed ).

If you push brake pedal CC disengages and you can engage it back pushing once RES.

It's in the manual -  https://www.toyota.co.uk/customer/manuals

But briefly, as Ricky says, press the button that has a car with a dial under it to 'arm' the system, then get to the speed you want to and then pull down on the +Res/-Set switch, and it'll lock the car to that speed in radar-guided mode.

1 hour ago, Cyker said: this is the sort of thing they should show you during test-drive and handover (But very few do!)

They don't and also they may disable beep alerts from the other safety features when they let you go out for a test drive. For any prospective buyers, it may be worth specifically asking for these to be demo'd in case it's a dealbreaker for him indoors.

Toyota today announces improvements and enhancements that will further strengthen its Yaris Hybrid hatchback range, increasing the market appeal of a model that has proved an outstanding success for the brand. A significant programme of performance, safety and styling upgrades will ensure the model presents class-leading qualities in its area of the highly competitive B-segment.

Toyota is introducing a completely new digital dimension to the car with a customisable driver’s instrument display, a more powerful and intuitive multimedia system, convenient and stable connectivity and, for the first time, a hands-free digital key will be available*.

The principal changes also include a more powerful version of Yaris’s 1.5-litre hybrid electric powertrain and an increase in the scope and performance of the car’s advanced active safety and driver assistance systems,

Built in Europe for European customers, the new Yaris will reinforce the model’s long-established reputation for innovation and excellence in small car design and engineering.

A new digital user experience

Toyota has targeted a best-in-class proposition with completely new digital user experience for the new Yaris. This takes in both a customisable driver’s instrument display and a faster and more powerful multimedia system with added functionality. The displays – seven or 12.3-inch for the combimeter, nine or 10.5-inch for the multimedia screen, according to model grade – are class-leading in terms of size.

The 12.3-inch digital combimeter presents dials, information and graphics in sharp definition for good visibility in all light levels. Their appearance is customisable to suit the driver’s mood and the type of journey with up to four options: Smart, Casual, Sporty and Tough. According to model grade, a seven or 12.3 or seven-inch versions are fitted.

The new-to-Yaris Toyota Smart Connect multimedia system has a more intuitive and reactive interface and provides cloud-based navigation as standard. This “always connected” system ensures journey planning benefits from up-to-the-moment information on routes, traffic and delays.

It takes spoken commands to another level with a voice recognition function and “Hey Toyota” voice agent that respond to more natural forms of speech. For example, simply state “Hey Toyota, I’m cold” and the system will automatically raise the climate control temperature.

Ease of connectivity is a customer priority and new Yaris enables wireless smartphone integration using both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. And, as with the Toyota Safety Sense systems, upgrades and new functions for the multimedia system can be applied over-the-air without additional trips to the service centre.

Easy access with smart digital key

The digital transformation of new Yaris includes the first availability of a smart digital key. Linked to the MyT app, this gives up to five users access to the vehicle using their smartphone. It’s designed for complete convenience, so users can lock, unlock or start their vehicle without having to take their phone out of their bag or pocket.

This feature, standard on the new Premiere Edition grade, further expands the MyT functions, which include remote locking/unlocking, climate control operation and activation of the hazard lights for easy vehicle identification in a crowded car park. It’s compatible with both Apple and Android devices and four years’ connection is included in the car’s purchase price.

Technologies for safer, easier driving

With its wealth of active and passive safety equipment and fundamentally strong design, the current Yaris was developed with the aim of being the safest small car in the world. Toyota is introducing additional and enhanced safety features to further improve the model’s safety leadership.

In the new Yaris, these are more effective than ever, with additional and improved functions, and include the latest generation Toyota Safety Sense driver assistance systems. In its mission ultimately to eliminate road traffic accidents, Toyota provides advanced technology features as standard – features that are often extra-cost options or simply not available on other B-segment models.

Thanks to its new multimedia system and data communications module (DCM), Toyota provides the flexibility and convenience of software updates delivered over-the-air. This means the Toyota Safety Sense and multimedia functions can be seamlessly upgraded, with no need for the car to be taken to a service centre. Downloads can take place while the car is being driven, ready for installation when it’s convenient for the driver.

Using a new camera and radar which can scan further and wider than before allows for a significant increase in the scope of accident risk detection. For example, the Pre-Collision System (PCS) can now recognise a potential head-on impact and a wider range of objects and vehicles – pedestrians, cyclists and now motorcyclists – in the car’s path. The Intersection Collision Avoidance Support – a safety feature which debuted for Toyota on the current generation Yaris – similarly has a wider operating scope, identifying approaching traffic across two lanes, crossing cyclists and vehicles cutting in from the side at a junction.

Acceleration Suppression is a new addition to the Toyota Safety Sense portfolio. This intervenes to slow any sudden acceleration when it recognises the risk of a collision with a vehicle ahead.

Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) is another new feature, designed to help avoid familiar accident hazards when driving at low speed. Deceleration Assist provides smooth deceleration when the driver comes off the accelerator to slow down when approaching a slower vehicle ahead, or entering a bend. The second element is Steering Assist, which recognises a bend in the road ahead and adjusts steering force to help the driver make a smooth and stable turn.

The new Emergency Driving Stop System (EDSS, functioning when Lane Trace Assist is activated) is able to support the driver, should they be taken ill or incapacitated. If the system detects the driver has made no inputs – steering, braking, accelerating – for a certain amount of time, it will sound a warning. If there is no reaction from the driver, it will bring the car to a gentle stop, activate the hazard lights and unlock the doors.

Protection is also provided when the car is stationary, With the Safe Exit Assist (SEA)*, a visual and audio warning system which will prevent a door being inadvertently opened into the path of vehicles and cyclists approaching from the rear. And the Rear Seat Reminder System (RSRS) will alert the driver via visual and acoustic notifications if they have left a child or pet on the back seat, helping avoid the risk of “hot car” incidents.

As well as these extra functions, new Yaris also benefits from upgrades to its established Toyota Safety Sense features. The Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) has been revised to respond more quickly and operate with a more natural feel. For example, when another vehicle moves into the Yaris’s lane, deceleration is more gradual. The driver can also select a longer vehicle-to-vehicle distance setting for a more comfortable gap and the system’s curve speed reduction is activated earlier, giving smoother speed control.

New systems have been added to the Adaptive Cruise Control for safer overtaking: Overtake Prevention Support prevents unintentional overtaking on the wrong side of a vehicle (“undertaking”); and Preliminary Deceleration/Turn Signal Linked Control helps the driver safely re-join the traffic lane at an appropriate speed and distance from other vehicles.

The Lane Departure Alert (LDA) now recognises when the driver has moved out of lane while trying to avoid an obstacle (pedestrian or other road users) and temporarily cancels the Lane Departure Warning. The lane-centring function of the Lane Trace Assist (LTA) has also been changed so that the car will deliver a more natural-feeling. The Road Sign Assist has been enhanced so just a one-touch adjustment of the speed limiter is required to match traffic sign information.

Refreshed styling and Yaris Premiere Edition

At launch, the new Yaris range will include a special Premiere Edition version, a halo model that showcases the model’s full range of new features. This will be offered with the new Hybrid 130 powertrain (details below), a new dedicated Neptune Blue bi-tone paintwork with a contrast black roof and pillars, and new-design 17-inch black machined alloy wheels. The blue theme is repeated in the seat upholstery stitching and deco lines on the instrument and door panels. The Premiere Edition will also be available in bi-tone Platinum Pearl White or Silver Metallic paintwork.

Elsewhere, new five-spoke alloy wheel designs will be introduced, in silver or machined finishes respectively. Interior seat upholstery has also been refreshed with a new pattern. A new Juniper Blue paint option will be available across the Yaris range.

In other respects, new Yaris retains the muscular, “condensed agile” lines that distinguish it from other B-segment models and give it the sense of being full of energy and always ready-to-go. Its sporty profile is made possible thanks to its GA-B platform: overall height and length are compact, but the wheelbase and front and rear tracks are generous, giving a planted look and helping secure good cabin space. The short overhangs add to Yaris’s nimble character in urban driving, giving the car a suitably tight 5.2m turning radius (with 16-inch wheels) – ideal for city streets and tight parking spaces.

The interior follows a “less is more” concept. It’s a sharply designed space that has the high sensory quality and spacious feel of a car from a class above. Details include soft-touch padding across the dashboard; soft felt inserts in the door panels; a wide front console; a low-set hood for the driver’s instrument binnacle; and a small-diameter, sporty steering wheel.

More power and a more rewarding drive

The updates to Yaris’s full hybrid electric powertrain are central to the model’s enhanced appeal, delivering both higher performance and a more engaging driving experience. These qualities are increasingly important to prospective B-segment customers, especially those seeking to downsize their choice of car. With the new Yaris, customers can now choose from two hybrid powertrains to suit their needs while still benefiting from class-leading environmental performance.

On its debut the 1.5-litre system was praised by media and motorists alike for its exceptional fuel and emissions efficiency and how it enabled the car to be driven for longer and further in all-electric EV mode. By deploying the transaxle from the latest, fifth generation of Toyota’s market-leading hybrid electric technology, it now offers more power, more torque and more rewarding driveability.

A new transaxle with a larger and more powerful electric motor-generator and revisions to the power control unit’s (PCU) software and hardware have raised total system output by 12 per cent, from 114bhp/85kW to 129bhp/96kW. There’s a significant hike in torque, too, with the maximum from the MG2 electric motor increased by 30 per cent across the total rev band, from 141Nm to 185Nm.

This translates into a noticeably faster acceleration, not just for the 0-62mph benchmark, but more importantly for nimbler progress at overtaking speeds. Half a second has been taken off the 0-62mph time (9.2 seconds), and there’s also a reduction in the 50 to 75mph time to 7.5 seconds. These gains have been secured with only a modest upshift in CO 2 emissions; the Yaris retains its best-in-class status in this regard, with 96-116g/km. All performance data remain provisional prior to official homologation.

Of course, adding power is just part of the story. It’s how the driver experiences the car’s performance that makes the real difference. With the increase in torque delivered at all engine speeds, the result is a stronger, more responsive and more dynamic feel.

The hybrid electric powertrain is the number one deciding factor for people choosing to buy Yaris. By adding increased performance to the mix, its appeal will be even greater – smooth and nimble around town and poised and confident on the open road.

With the new “dual hybrid” offering in the new Yaris line-up, customers can choose between the well-established Yaris hybrid powertrain with best-in-class environmental performance, now named Hybrid 115, or the new system, Hybrid 130, which delivers higher performance while maintaining class-leading environmental qualities.

The new Yaris Premiere Edition and GR Sport models will be equipped with the Hybrid 130 as standard*.

Yaris: a history of high achievement

Yaris is one of the most successful models in Toyota’s history, its worldwide sales having passed through the 10 million mark in 2023. That achievement shows how this small car has delivered on its original promise of bringing “big-small” thinking to the market for B-segment models for a compact and purposeful looking car but spacious on the inside.

With the first generation hatchback having scooped both Car of the Year titles at the turn of the millennium in Europe and Japan, Yaris has consistently set benchmarks for performance and technology, not least in becoming the first car in its class to be offered with hybrid electric power in the third generation. Constant improvement and a deep understanding of the changing customer preferences and priorities has seen the Yaris remain at the top of its game. Its consistently strong appeal and class-leading qualities saw the current, fourth generation model honoured with another European Car of the Year award in 2021.

Yaris’s evolution has seen the range grow from its core hatchback to include today’s Yaris Cross compact SUV and the high-performance GR Yaris, a car developed directly with the skills and experience gained from Toyota Gazoo Racing’s multiple title-winning success in the World Rally Championship.

2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid

2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid Review

  • Incredible real world fuel efficiency
  • Reasonable performance
  • Excellent ride and handling balance
  • It's just too expensive to buy
  • European Yaris models get a lot more kit
  • Cramped back seat and boot

Think small cars and you’ll be probably thinking about tiny buzz-boxes with sub $20,000 starting prices, spartan equipment levels and not much by way of driving appeal. That might have been the case over 5 years ago now, but small cars have have hit new heights both in size, tech and sadly, cost too. Enter the 2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid. Cheap and cheerful? Not anymore, with Toyota asking close to $30,000 before on-road costs for Yaris we tested here.

2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid rear

Luckily, the Yaris’ higher price is matched with an all-new car which is much improved over its predecessor. Toyota says it better equipped than before, with more tech and features, but perhaps the biggest trump card is that the Yaris can be had with a hybrid system on most models for the first time. So does the Yaris have enough talent and smarts to live up to its lofty price increases? Let’s find out.

Price and Equipment: 7/10

With the cheapest previous generation of the Toyota Yaris setting buyers a figure in the mid to high teens, you’d think that Toyota has decided to throw the baby out with the bathwater, with the new model kicking off from $22,130 plus on-road costs – for a base Yaris Ascent in manual. An automatic Ascent Sport will set you back $23,630 plus on-roads. Next up in the range, the Yaris SX auto will set you back $27,020 before on-road costs.

If you’re after a hybrid model of the Yaris (which you should be), the SX Hybrid we’ve tested here comes in at $29,020 before on-road costs, while the top-spec ZR Hybrid is priced from a rather lofty $32,100 plus on-road costs. It’s clear that Toyota has moved the Yaris’ pricing up into a new sphere, abandoning the sub-$20k segment definitively.

2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid interior

All models of the Yaris range get a 7.0-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, auto-folding mirrors, power windows, auto high beam and LED daytime running lights. The Yaris SX Hybrid we tested here comes with 15-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, privacy glass, keyless entry and start, adaptive cruise control, single-zone climate control, a leather steering wheel and shifter as well as satellite navigation with live traffic updates and a digital radio.

The 2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid comes very well equipped when it comes to safety with a whopping eight airbags, including a front-centre airbag between the driver and front passenger. On the active safety front, the Yaris gets high-and low-speed auto emergency braking ( AEB ) with pedestrian and cyclist detection,  front cross traffic alert , rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, driver fatigue detection, road sign recognition, and even a secondary collision braking system that prevents the Yaris from moving further after an accident if the airbags have been deployed. Only blind-spot monitoring is lacking in the SX Hybrid. From a safety front, the Yaris is peerless.

2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid interior

The colour seen on our test car is a deep purple called ‘Lunar Blue’, which is part of the metallic colour range that also includes ‘Crystal Pearl’, ‘Silver Pearl’, ‘Atomic Rush’, ‘Scarlet’, ‘Bronx Bronze’, ‘Cherry Blossom’, ‘Coral Rose’, ‘Eclectic Blue’ and ‘Electric Green’ for an extra $575. The two standard colours on the 2022 Toyota Yaris SX hybrid are ‘Glacier White’ and ‘Ebony’.

Not all is perfect on the equipment front we think as the Yaris SX Hybrid should come with larger 16-inch alloy wheels at this price point, along with a larger infotainment screen and perhaps even a heads-up display. A centre armrest wouldn’t go astray, either – like overseas models have.

The Yaris’ key rivals include the Kia Rio, Mazda 2, and Suzuki Swift, all of which cost less spec for spec than the Yaris, even if they lack the Toyota’s hybrid system.

A similarly specced 2022 Kia Rio 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo GT-Line comes in at $23,590 before on-road costs and includes as larger screen than the Yaris and a longer warranty, while a top of the range 2022 Mazda 2 Genki with its suave and high quality interior and standard heads up display will set you back $25,990 before on-road costs. A 2022 Suzuki Swift Sport offers more power than the Yaris, thanks to its 1.4L turbocharged engine punching out 103kW for $28,990 before on-road costs.

Performance and Economy: 9.5/10

The 2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid marries a  1.5-litre petrol three-cylinder naturally aspirated engine  making 67kW of power and 120Nm of torque with a 58kW/141Nm electric motor making 58kW 141Nm for a maximum combined power output of  85kW . Toyota doesn’t quote a combined torque figure.

2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid engine

The hybrid drivetrain sends power to the front wheels through a continuously-variable transmission (CVT) automatic gearbox. Around town, it’s a blast to drive. It might not be hugely powerful – with a 0-100km/h time of around 9.5 seconds – but the Yaris feels sprightly no matter what you throw at it. The Yaris SX Hybrid moves off from a stop super smoothly under electric power, with no shuddering or vibration like you’d find in a Volkswagen Polo, before the petrol engine thrums to life and joins the acceleration party almost imperceptibly. It all just works brilliantly, with tonnes of shove and little hesitation.

2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid interior

You’re also looking at one of the most fuel efficient non plug-in hybrid (PHEV) cars on the market in Australia. Toyota claims the Yaris SX Hybrid will use  3.3L/100km on the combined testing cycle. Here comes a real surprise – we managed to get that number down to around 2L/100km in some inner city driving, a simply phenomenal result. We’ll go and say it – in the real world, the Yaris Hybrid is the most fuel efficient car on sale that doesn’t need to be plugged in to be charged.

2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid system

Even longer freeway stints down the Mornington Peninsula saw the Yaris use 3.5L/100 with four adults onboard. The Yaris will happily run on 91 RON unleaded to keep costs down, making it without a doubt an exceptional money saver when it comes to filling up.

Ride and Handling: 8.5/10

It might come as a surprise that the 2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid rides beautifully, skipping over bumps with easy while also handling much better than you’d expect. Despite its low kerb weight, it feel substantial on the road, with its rigid body and expert suspension tune dealing with bumps, potholes and broken road surfaces with ease. Thank the Yaris’ transition to Toyota’s super rigid and advance TNGA platform which underpins it.

2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid rear

The steering is light but oddly feelsome and the brakes feel decent even as the car transitions between regeneration and actual friction braking, but surprise number two comes from he way the Yaris handles. It feels light on its feet, changes direction keenly and is a world away from the soggy and boring experience its predecessor delivered. The skinny Dunlop Ensave tyres aren’t the last word in outright grip as they’re clearly geared for fuel efficiency but the Yaris’ chassis is so adept we can’t help but wonder if some of the GR’s charm has been deliberately injected into the little Toyota.

2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid tyre

Refinement isn’t so positive sadly, with a lot of road and wind noise getting into the cabin at speed, betraying the Yaris as a small car at the end of the day.

The safety features work well, with lane assist keeping the Yaris SX Hybrid nicely in the centre of the lane and a well tuned adaptive cruise control system. Visibility is decent too, but we wish the reversing camera was a little clearer.

Interior and Practicality: 7/10

Inside, Toyota has worked hard to make the Yaris feel more premium and roomy than its predecessor. Overall, the design is interesting, and more flamboyant than that found in the super proper Polo, even if it doesn’t feel overly special. Sadly, interior quality isn’t the best in the Yaris, with lots of hard surfaces on the doors, and centre console, even if the dashboard is soft to the touch. Toyota has also done good job adding a bit of colour with the white strips on the dashboard.

2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid interior

Being a Toyota, the ergonomics are excellent and everything falls easily to hand, with super easy to use climate controls and a central touchscreen which is easy to use but feels a little basic and underdone. For a car costing this much in 2022, the Yaris should have a larger screen, with better quality and flashier graphics. Sure, this one gets the job done and is easy to use, but it feels a little too small and in bright sunlight looks hazy and not all that clear. The instruments are split into two dials – left and right – flanking a central 4.2-inch information display and they look very funky, adding a touch of flair to the Yaris’ interior.

2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid interior

Sadly, the lack of a centre console really jarred, as there’s nowhere to rest your left elbow when driving and the two cupholders felt a little too far back. There’s a tray under the climate controls large enough for a phone, a shelf in front of the passenger on the dash, another one under the touchscreen and decent doorbins.

2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid rear seat

Up front, there’s ample space for even taller drivers and passengers with tons of adjustment in the driving position too. Sadly, the rear seats are very cramped, as we discovered with both seats filled in the rear. There’s very little legroom, meaning knees will dig into the front seats, which might be fine for short journeys, but for longer trips a Volkswagen Polo will be much better. Even a Kia Rio has more space, especially headroom, which is lacking too in the Yaris. The rear seat bench is very upright and is clearly designed for shorter trips. but there isn’t much space and the rear backrest is quite upright.

2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid boot

The Yaris has a small boot with a claimed luggage capacity of just 270-litres , which is less than most of its rivals. A Polo will fit a massive 351 litres, showing just how small the dinky little Yaris is. The Yaris has space saver spare tyre under the adjustable boot floor. There aren’t any hooks

Servicing and Warranty: 9/10

The 2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid comes with a  five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty , which extends to seven years on the drivetrain if you service the Yaris through Toyota’s extensive dealer network. Servicing the Yaris SX Hybrid comes every 12 months or 15,000km, whichever comes first. The first four services are capped at just $195  each, which is  $975 for a five-year period. This makes the Yaris the cheapest car in the segment to service. Unlike Toyotas of the past, its service intervals stretch to once yearly/every 15,000km. Unfortunately no current Toyota has any form of roadside assistance as standard.

2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid warranty

A Mazda2 over the same period of time would set you back $1,874 and you would also have to service it more often, as the Mazda has 10,000km service intervals. Although the Volkswagen Polo has the same intervals as the Yaris, servicing one over the same five years will come to an eye-watering $2,500.

2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid DiscoverAuto Rating: 8.0/10

The 2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid might be Australia’s most fuel efficient non-PHEV car and brilliant to drive, but it’s interior is a little disappointing considering it will set you back close to $33,000 drive-away. Very simply, the Yaris doesn’t have anywhere near the interior we’d expect at this price point. Sure, it’s nice inside, but it isnt $33k nice. It lacks the premium feel of its rival, the Polo and it’s hard to ignore the fact that a Toyota Corolla is prices very closely to it.

2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid rear

Still, with its cheap servicing, the Yaris SX Hybrid will be an expert in reducing weekly fuel bills and the yearly servicing bill. Add in Toyota’s legendary reliability and you have a car which will prove brilliant to own and drive, albeit with a steep initial asking price. But we’ve levelled this criticism at the Yaris’ rivals too. Perhaps we should just accept that small cars are now priced like larger ones and move on? You be the judge.

  • New Yaris Cross Premiere Edition with ultimate specification and exclusive Urban Khaki paintwork
  • Online reservations begin this month in selected European markets 1

2023 Yaris Cross Premiere Edition

Toyota is strengthening every key aspect of the popular Yaris Cross, building on the qualities that earned the compact SUV the World Urban Car title among many other awards during its first year on sale.

This first round of enhancements for the model focuses on the top purchase considerations for customers in the segment, ensuring Yaris Cross maintains its all-round buyer appeal. Since its introduction in 2021, it has quickly established itself as strong and highly competitive challenger in the fast-growing European B-SUV market and is the leader in its segment to date this year.

The new Yaris Cross delivers stronger and more rewarding performance from its hybrid electric powertrain; safer and easier driving with the latest Toyota T-Mate safety and driver assistance systems; a fully digital user experience; and styling details that enhance its modern urban styling. Its introduction completes a full revision of Toyota’s small car line-up with new Aygo X and Yaris hatchback; it also forms part of a powerful new Yaris family alongside the hatchback and the pure performance GR Yaris.

2023 Yaris Cross GR SPORT

POWER AND DRIVING PLEASURE

The Yaris Cross joins its sibling Yaris hatchback model with the new “dual hybrid” powertrain offering in adopting fifth generation Toyota hybrid technology in a new powertrain option, the “Hybrid 130”. This offers a wider choice to new B-segment customers downsizing their vehicle, without sacrificing performance.

The established 1.5-litre full hybrid electric system has been equipped with a new transaxle that features a larger and more powerful electric motor-generator (MG1). This, together with adjustments to the power control unit (PCU), delivers a 12% increase in total system output, from 116 DIN hp/85 kW to 130 DIN hp/96 kW. At the same time, the MG2 motor’s torque has been increased across the entire rev band, with the maximum rising by 30% from 141 to 185 Nm.

The result is faster acceleration, with the 0-100 km/h time reduced by half a second to 10.7 seconds and the 80-120 km/h overtaking benchmark brought down by 0.4 seconds to 8.9 seconds. Where CO 2 emissions are concerned, the impact is modest with the new system achieving a best-in-class 103-122 g/km.

These statistics are only part of the story; equally significant is the impact on the driving experience. Engine, drive motor and hybrid battery performance have all been maximised in the Hybrid 130. This, together with a higher level of torque at all engine speeds, gives the car a more dynamic and responsive feel with acceleration and deceleration performance that adds enjoyment to every drive, whether on urban streets or out on the open road. Drive motor assistance in response to the driver’s use of the accelerator has been enhanced to help produce faithful handling and a linear acceleration feel.

The car’s agile, confidence-inspiring performance is further supported by the capability of its GA-B platform, with the fundamental benefits of a low centre of gravity and a highly rigid body.

The new Hybrid 130 powertrain will be introduced in the high grade models, including the new Premiere Edition and GR SPORT. The line-up will continue to offer the established 116 DIN hp/85 kW hybrid system, now known as the “Hybrid 115”.

The hybrid electric powertrain is the number one deciding factor for people choosing to buy Yaris Cross. With its 100% hybrid line-up and the unique-in-class option of two different powertrains, customers now have more choice than ever to suit their needs.

2023 Yaris Cross Premiere Edition

A QUIETER DRIVE WITH IMPROVED NOISE AND VIBRATION PACKAGE

The new Yaris Cross benefits from a range of additional measures to reduce noise and vibration.

Where engine noise is concerned, four key areas have been the focus for improvement: a dynamic damper has been added to the left-side engine mount; a resonator has been fitted to the intake hose; the inner dash silencer has been changed from a single layer to a three-layer construction; and an extra layer of felt has been added to the cowl top silencer.

To combat wind and road noise, thicker glass is used for the windscreen as well as front and rear side windows.

2023 Yaris Cross Premiere Edition

A COMPLETE DIGITAL USER EXPERIENCE

Access to information, connectivity and entertainment have been transformed with the introduction of a completely new digital user experience. This includes both a driver’s instrument display that can be configured and customised to suit the driver’s preference, and a multimedia system that’s more powerful, quicker to respond and offers a wider range of functions. The displays are class-leading in size: seven or 12.3-inch for the driver’s combimeter, and nine or 10.5-inch for the multimedia touchscreen, depending on grade.

The 12.3-inch combimeter presents dials, information and graphics in sharp definition for good visibility in all light levels. The driver can customise the display’s appearance to suit their mood or the type of journey with four style options: Smart, Casual, Sporty and Tough.

The seven-inch version is standard on Mid and Mid+ grades; the 12.3-inch is featured on high grade, GR SPORT and Premiere Edition models.

The Toyota Smart Connect multimedia system is designed for easy, intuitive use with quicker response to inputs thanks to increased computing power. Its functions include cloud-based navigation as standard, an “always connected” system that accesses up-to-the-moment information on routes, traffic, and delays for better journey planning.

The system has an enhanced, more responsive voice recognition system and an on-board “Hey Toyota” voice agent that can recognise natural, conversational language and requests. For example, say “Hey Toyota, I’m cold” and the system will automatically raise the climate control temperature.

Easy connectivity is designed-in, with wireless smartphone integration for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. As with the Toyota Safety Sense systems, multimedia upgrades and new functions can be seamlessly installed over-the-air.

2023 Yaris Cross GR SPORT

EASY ACCESS WITH SMART DIGITAL KEY

The Yaris Cross joins the new Yaris hatchback in offering owners the convenience and security of a Smart Digital Key. Linked to the MyT app, this gives up to five users access to the vehicle using their smartphone. The digital key can be used to lock, unlock and start the vehicle – with no need for the phone to be taken out of the user’s bag or pocket.

The key is compatible with Apple and Android devices and is provided as standard on the Premiere Edition. One year’s connection is included in the car’s purchase price.

The MyT app provides other useful functions, including remote locking/unlocking, pre-journey climate control operation and activation of the hazard lights to help locate vehicle – for example, in a busy car park.

SAFER, LESS STRESSFUL DRIVING WITH TOYOTA T-MATE

Toyota set out to make the current generation Yaris hatchback the safest small car in the world, equipping it with a wealth of active and passive safety provisions and features that can take much of the familiar stress out of driving. The Yaris Cross has benefited from the same wide-ranging Toyota T-Mate package.

Toyota T-Mate is the umbrella term for advanced features that make a car safer and easier to drive and park. In the new Yaris Cross, these have been enhanced and extended to be more effective than ever, including the introduction of the latest generation Toyota Safety Sense systems. These features, often extra-cost options or simply not available on other B-SUV models, are provided as standard throughout the Yaris Cross range.

A new multimedia system and data communications module (DCM) allows software updates to be delivered over-the-air. This means the Toyota Safety Sense and multimedia functions can be seamlessly upgraded, with no need for the car to be taken to a service centre. Downloads can take place while the car is being driven, ready for installation when it’s convenient for the driver.

Using a new camera and radar system which can scan further and wider than before, there’s increased scope for detecting accident risks. For example, the Pre-Collision System (PCS) can now recognise a potential head-on impact and a wide range of objects and vehicles in the car’s path, including pedestrians, cyclists and now also motorcycles.

Deceleration Assist provides smooth deceleration when the driver releases the accelerator to slow down when approaching a slower vehicle ahead, or entering a bend. The second element of PDA is Steering Assist, which recognises a bend in the road ahead and adjusts steering force to help the driver make a smooth and stable turn.

The new Emergency Driving Stop System (EDSS) is able to support the driver, should they be taken ill or incapacitated. If it detects the driver has made no inputs – steering, braking, accelerating – for a certain amount of time, it will sound a warning. If there is no reaction from the driver, it will bring the car to a gentle stop, activate the hazard lights, and unlock the doors.

Toyota T-Mate also provides protection when the car is stationary, With the optional Safe Exit Assist (SEA), a visual and audible warning system helps guard against a door being inadvertently opened into the path of vehicles and cyclists approaching from the rear. And the Rear Seat Reminder System (RSRS) will alert the driver with visual and sound warnings if they have left a child or pet on the back seat, helping avoid the risk of “hot car” incidents.

As well as these extra functions, the new Yaris Cross also benefits from upgrades to its established Toyota Safety Sense features. The Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) has been revised to respond more quickly and operate with a more natural feel. For example, when another vehicle moves into the car’s lane, deceleration is more gradual.  The vehicle-to-vehicle distance settings have been extended so the driver has more choice to suit their preference, and the system’s curve speed reduction is activated earlier, giving smoother speed control.

New systems have been added to the ACC for safer overtaking: Overtake Prevention Support prevents unintentional overtaking on the wrong side of a vehicle (“undertaking”); and Preliminary Deceleration/Turn Signal Linked Control helps the driver safely re-join the traffic lane at an appropriate speed and distance from other vehicles.

The Lane Departure Alert (LDA) now recognises when the driver has moved out of lane while trying to avoid an obstacle (pedestrian or other road users) and temporarily cancels its warning function. The lane-centring function of the Lane Trace Assist (LTA) has been adjusted so that its performance has a more natural feel.  The Road Sign Assist has been enhanced so just a one-touch adjustment of the speed limiter is all that’s required to match traffic sign information.

2023 Yaris Cross Premiere Edition

ADDED STYLE WITH NEW PREMIERE EDITION

The Yaris Cross’ cool contemporary styling has resonated strongly with customers since launch, capturing the stance and image of an SUV in a car that’s compact and manoeuvrable on urban streets. Its visual appeal is enhanced in a new halo model for the range, the Premiere Edition.

This is offered in an exclusive new Urban Khaki paint finish in a bi-tone execution and with exclusive new 18-inch dark grey/machined five-spoke alloy wheels that enhance the dynamic, rugged look. Inside, upholstery stitching and deco lines on the instrument panel and doors match the green body colour. Platinum Pearl White and Silver Metallic bi-tone options are also available.

Interior seat upholstery has also been refreshed with a new pattern and a soft lower instrument panel covering has been introduced on all grades. A new Juniper Blue paint option is available across the range.

Note: All performance data of the New Yaris Cross is subject to homologation. Final specifications will be confirmed at the full product launch.

The United States Coast Guard is no longer searching for a 20-year-old man who jumped overboard on a Royal Caribbean cruise , the military branch reportedly said.

The Coast Guard began scouring the seas last Thursday, but has since called off its unsuccessful search for the unidentified passenger, the Daily Mail reported Tuesday.

The incident happened on the Liberty of the Seas luxury cruise ship of Royal Caribbean.

The vacation became a tragedy for one family when their loved ones helplessly saw the young man jump over the side of the deck which some onlookers said appeared to be an impulsive leap.

The 18-story Royal Caribbean Liberty of Seas was sailing between Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island during the shocking moment.

One passenger previously told The Post the man was pretty drunk before jumping over and appeared to be bickering with his father.

The Coast Guard has called off the search.

“As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess,” Bryan Sims said. “When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now.’ And he jumped out the window in front of us all.”

The federal branch quickly looked for the man starting last Thursday.

Royal Caribbean said last week its crew quickly began looking for the man along with the Coast Guard before the federal government took over the search.

The Post has sought comment from the Coast Guard.

On the eve of a jury trial expected to delve deeply into Tesla’s controversial “Autopilot” technology, the company has settled a lawsuit filed by the family of an Apple engineer killed on Highway 101 in Mountain View, according to court filings Monday.

Walter Huang, a married father of two from Foster City, died in 2018 after Autopilot steered his Tesla Model X compact SUV into a freeway barrier. Federal investigators cited Huang’s “lack of response due to distraction likely from a cell phone game application and overreliance” on Autopilot. Lawyers for the Huang family emphasized that there was no definitive finding that he was playing a game.

His wife, Sevonne, sued Tesla in 2019 on behalf of herself and the couple’s two children, seeking unspecified damages. The lawsuit in Santa Clara County Superior Court claimed Huang’s 2017 Tesla “lacked a properly designed system for crash avoidance,” and “was a vehicle that could and would strike and collide with ordinary and foreseeable roadway features in Autopilot mode.”

The case was to go before a jury this week, but Tesla said in court filings that it had reached a deal with Huang’s wife and kids. According to a filing by the electric car maker led by CEO Elon Musk and a lawyer for the Huang family, the settlement amount is confidential. No other terms of the deal were disclosed in the filings. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“This has been a long journey for the Huang family,” said Doris Cheng, a lawyer for Sevonne Huang and the children.

Tesla’s 2015 deployment of its Autopilot software — standard on every vehicle — has led to a litany of regulatory and legal problems for the company formerly headquartered in Palo Alto and now based in Texas. The basic version provides cruise control and steering assistance, while an enhanced version including navigation and automated lane changes and exiting.

Central to lawsuits and investigations are questions around whether Tesla’s marketing and the name of Autopilot encourage drivers to take their hands off the wheel and their attention off the road. The system’s ability to recognize stopped emergency vehicles and take appropriate action has also been called into question.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has been investigating Autopilot since August 2021, initially looking into 17 incidents in which a Tesla on Autopilot ran into a parked emergency vehicle on a highway. In 2022, the agency said it had broadened the probe , “to explore the degree to which Autopilot and associated Tesla systems may exacerbate human factors or behavioral safety risks by undermining the effectiveness of the driver’s supervision.”

In March of last year, the agency said it was launching a special team to investigate a fatal crash the previous month in which a Tesla Model S sedan collided with a ladder truck from the Contra Costa County fire department. The driver of the Tesla was killed, a passenger was critically injured, and four firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Tesla in December recalled nearly all 2 million of its vehicles in the U.S. after a two-year investigation by federal regulators into some 1,000 crashes occurring during Autopilot use. The recall was an over-the-air software update intended to give drivers more warnings when they failed to pay attention while using Autopilot’s “Autosteer” function. Teslas with Autosteer on were to more routinely check drivers’ attention levels and may disengage the feature for safety reasons.

In 2022, the California Department of Motor Vehicles filed an administrative complaint claiming Tesla deceptively advertised Autopilot and its “full self-driving” system in ways that contradict its own warnings that the features require active driver supervision.

Tesla, on its website, warns that Autopilot is “intended for use with a fully attentive driver, who has their hands on the wheel and is prepared to take over at any moment.”

The first lawsuit to blame Autopilot for a deadly crash — filed by the family of the deceased driver, Micah Lee, and two passengers seriously injured in the southern California crash — went to trial last year, with the jury siding with Tesla . Several such cases are headed for trial this year.

In the Huang case, the software engineer turned on Autopilot about 19 minutes before he crashed into the barrier known as a “gore point,” Tesla said in a March court filing. “He set the speed at 75 mph and (Autopilot) remained engaged until impact,” the filing said. Huang’s hands “were not detected on the steering wheel the last 6 seconds before the crash,” the filing said. “He had received two visual and one audible alerts reminding him to put his hands back on the steering wheel during the drive.”

Tesla acknowledged that its data and analysis showed that four times in the 35 days before Huang’s crash, “Autopilot steered slightly to the left at this same gore area,” and Huang each time “almost immediately corrected the steer by turning the wheel back to the right.” But the company claimed that its data showed that in the days before the incident, Huang had been increasing the time he spent on Autopilot with his hands off the wheel, reaching a point of “extraordinary misuse” of the system.

Tesla in a court filing said it settled the Huang case “to end years of litigation” and that it sought to keep the settlement amount secret because publicizing it could make settling future cases harder for the company.
