Germany Travel Mart 2024: 50 years of GTM celebrated in Saxony
Post date: Apr 24 2024

Anja Brokjans, Director, German National Tourist Office, enjoying a restful moment at GTM 2024 in Chemnitz
CHEMNITZ, Germany — The city formerly known as Karl Marx Stadt is basking in the spotlight, both for this week’s 50th edition of Germany Travel Mart, and looking ahead to 2025 as one of the three European Capitals of Culture.
Chemnitz hosted an unforgettable party Monday night as the official kick-off for Germany Travel Mart 2024.
The evening included exuberant modern dance from the Ballet Company of Theatre Chemnitz and symphonic music provided by the Young Philharmonic Orchestra Augustburg – along with cycling-powered film and a boisterous brass band.
“Germany remains competitive and is playing in the Championship League of Tourism,” proudly stated Petra Hedorfer, CEO of the German National Tourist Board.
With a strong showing in the European market and with international travellers, Germany is claiming its spot as a top tier destination. According to the Nations Brand Index, Germany is ranked first among all 27 European nations, and third worldwide because of a favourable global perception as being educational, fascinating and exciting.
Federal Government Coordinator for Culture and Tourism, Barbara Klepsch, was another proud booster at the festivities, excited for Chemnitz’s honour as the fourth German city to be European Capital of Culture. “The flagship project ‘Purple Path’ directly relates to the local saying ‘everything goes back to the mines’; building a bridge between the roots of the local people with their centuries-old heritage of mining and modern art,” said Klepsch.
STRONG VISITOR STATS
As 400 international guests from 38 countries revelled in Monday night’s celebrations, German tourism partners were excited to share 2023 stats, with 81 million overnight visitors, a 20% increase from the previous year, and a recovery rate of 88% from Canadian travellers compared to 2019.
With the motto, ‘C the Unseen’, Chemnitz is poised to welcome visitors with 100 projects and more than 1000 exhibits in 2025, including #3000Garages, a year-long commitment to transform small public spaces into community hubs for creativity and urban development. Another project is Generous Neighbours, bringing together individuals, corporations, educational institutions and other stakeholders to green their city with plantings of gardens and allotments.
The Purple Path is an art and sculpture trail connecting Chemnitz with the 38 cities of Saxony through 70 contemporary installations by international and Saxon artists, displayed in a variety of locations including Glance by Tanya Rochelmeyer at the Floha train station, The Wild Boars by Carl Emanuel Wolff in Ehrenfriedersdorf and Color Floating by Nevin Aladag over the pond in Zwonitz’s Austelpark.
Additional lures for clients to consider Germany this year include UEFA European Football Championship in June and July, exhibitions celebrating 250 years since the birth of artist Caspar David Friedrich and the commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Michael Holden, a Canadian travel professional based in St. John’s, Newfoundland, had nothing but praise for GTM 2024.
“For bringing Canadians to Germany, Germany Travel Mart is key to learning and to have the experts right there. It’s the perfect opportunity to engage with all of these suppliers – from Berlin to Freyburg, Chemnitz, Hamburg and Frankfurt. This is my first Germany Travel Mart and I’ve learned a lot and discovered new destinations,” he said.
GTM PRE-TOUR IN SAXONY
With 23 of the 52 UNESCO World Heritage sites found in eastern Germany, Saxony is poised to welcome many to explore its historic castles and medieval towns. The region was featured as one of GTM 2024’s pre-tours.
As the capital of Saxony, Dresden was nicknamed the ‘Jewel Box’ because of numerous Baroque and Rococo buildings in its city centre. These days it’s one of the most visited cities of Germany. Highlights include the restoration and renovation of the Frauenkirche, and the Semperoper, the ballet opera house. Both have tours showcasing the elegant and lavish details within these two buildings.
Bautzen, Germany
Newly reopened this spring in Dresden after a year-long closure is the 180-room, 31 suite Taschenberg Palais Kempinski Dresden. The hotel is steps from the church, ballet opera house, the Residenzschloss (a former Royal palace now a dedicated museum to art and science) and the Furstenzug, a 102-metre porcelain mural of the House of Wettin, depicting the Saxon kings from 1127 to 1904.
Saxony provides several options for day-tripping from Dresden, whether by car or by train. One possibility is the medieval town of Bautzen, which celebrated its 1,000-year anniversary in 2002. Known as the city of towers, there are 14 towers in the old town. Bautzen also hosts one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany, plus it’s home to St. Peter Cathedral, the oldest and largest interdenominational church in the country. The town pride also includes Bautz’ner Senf, the most famous mustard in Germany; visitors can learn more at the Senfmuseum and taste at the Baut’zner Senfrestaurant.
Dresden, Germany.
Kamenz, in northeast Saxony, is located on the Black Estler River and home to the Museum of Sacred Art, a former Catholic Church and monastery, and now an art gallery and Protestant Church. It’s also the birthplace of German playwright and philosopher Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, whose life is detailed within the Lessing Kamenz Museum, an hour well-spent learning about his life and writings. Newly opened is the Dada Zentrum Kamenz, a contemporary art gallery showcasing Dada works from Saxon artists.
The architecturally-rich town of Gorlitz showcases medieval, Renaissance, Gothic and Art Nouveau, thanks to a dedicated focus on restoration. This town has become a favourite of Hollywood (or Goerliwood, as locals say) with starring roles in Inglourious Basterds, The Book Thief, Around the World in 80 Days and The Grand Budapest Hotel. The Museum of History and Culture houses the eye-catching historical library hall of the Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences, while St. Peter’s Church houses the famous sun organ, and dates to 1697. And the city’s pedestrian Old Town Bridge may be new but has been connecting Gorlitz and with its sister city in Poland, Zgorzelec, since the 13th century. Visitors can easily spend an afternoon in Zgorzelec before returning to explore more Saxon history.
Gorlitz, Germany.

49th Germany Travel Mart Underway Now In Essen
April 17, 2023
Set to the doo-wop song “Stay” by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs with the lyrics ‘please, please stay, just a little bit longer,’ Petra Hedorfer, the CEO of the German National Tourist Board, debuted a sneak peek at the destination’s upcoming travel campaign encouraging travellers to stay a little bit longer in Germany during the 49th Germany Travel Mart happening now in Essen.
“It’s the perfect soundtrack for promoting sustainable travel in Destination Germany with our new campaign Stay A Little Bit Longer, launching soon,” she said. “Stay a little bit longer is a key factor in travel. Take the time out, feel the atmosphere, encounter people and culture, enjoy and experience nature and last but not least, think of your carbon footprint.”
In total, 800 people are on location for the most important sales event for German incoming tourism, including 350 representatives from the international travel industry from 39 countries, including a Canadian delegation.
“The international aspect of the 49th GTM is paramount in promoting sustainable development, digitization, and economic growth,” Anja Brokjans, director of the German National Tourist Office in Canada, tells PressToday. “The presence of the Canadian delegation, alongside other countries, demonstrates the importance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges.”
The Canadian delegation consists of Sandie Vanderschot, Group Planner Team Leader at Ellison Travel & Tours; Harry Goetschi, Vice President at Groupe Tours Chanteclerc Inc.;Vincent Veerasuntharam, CEO at Connaissance Travel & Tours and Yury Manukhow, Director, Business Development at Canadian Gateway/CG Journeys.
“The opportunity to meet in person provides a unique chance to promote Germany as a leader in sustainability and innovation, showcasing its commitment to creating a more prosperous and equitable world for all,” adds Brokjans.
Along with special events and meetings, travel partners took part in destination immersion tours across various parts of the country to learn about what’s new and the wide variety of attractions in the country. The GNTB has made significant efforts to make the conference more sustainable, including using public transit networks to get delegates to events and meetings.
One of the key pillars for the GNTB is sustainability. Essen is a prime example of a city that’s been undergoing a transformation from an industrial town to a green city. The opening event was held at Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, a large former industrial site that is now an event space and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Former railway lines for transporting coal in the city are now cycle path and former sewage areas are now denaturalized streams and rivers.

Germany Travel Mart Highlights Dresden
A castle on the Elbe.
Germany has a great tourism story to tell this year, with inbound travel expected to grow close to 5 percent and online bookings soaring 63 percent. And while the German-speaking world is the leading source of visitors, the U.S. is the country’s next-largest customer base, accounting for a whopping $6 billion spend. “Inbound tourism to Germany has been particularly buoyant throughout 2017,” said Petra Hedorfer, CEO of the German National Tourist Board, which hosted this year's German Travel Mart (GTM), the 44th edition of the travel trade show, in Dresden.
Travel delegates from more than 50 countries attended this year's GTM.

“Growth at the end of 2017 almost trebled compared with the previous year. Positive economic data, political stability in important source markets and the excellent positioning of the Destination Germany brand in the international market all contributed to this strong showing. We scored highly with guests from around the world, especially as a holiday destination," Hedorfer said.
Germany is promoting 2018 as the year of "Culinary Germany" (the organization revealed a 16 video “ Follow the Taste ” series on its website), while 2019 will focus on "100 Years of the Bauhaus," the style of art started at the art school Bauhaus in Weimar by Walter Gropius in 1919. New marketing campaigns will also focus on the 200th anniversary of Karl Marx, the German philosopher born in Trier in 1818. This year's version also highlighted Dresden, the state capital of Saxony, a testament to how a city can recover and reinvent itself after being fire-bombed in World War II.
For a two- or three-day side trip or corporate event in the German countryside, Dresden offers river boats on the Elbe, castles on the hills, gourmet dining, tours of the Volkswagen factory, a visit to the nearby Gothic town of Pilne, and easy hiking on the sandstone Bastei Mountains in the Saxon Switzerland National Park.
On our last night, we had an elegant outdoor dinner in the courtyard of the Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski, originally built in 1705 by August the Strong for his mistress. Goethe and Napoleon once walked the nearby streets; there are vineyards and wineries, and plenty of beer and pretzels and wurst. And in December, there is the oldest Christmas market in Germany. Back at the official Germany Travel Mart, meanwhile, speakers noted that Germany is a strong wellness and beauty destination. In addition, two big events — Beethoven’s 200th birthday and the Passion Play that reappears for one season every 10 years — will be highlights in 2019 and 2020, respectively.

At the conclusion of the l 48th Germany Travel MartTM (GTM) in Oberammergau, the German National Tourist Board (GNTB) has announced the next venue.
The 49th GTM will take place in Essen from April 16 – 18, 2023. The event partners are the Essen Marketing Gesellschaft mbH (EMG), Ruhr Tourismus GmbH (RTG) and Tourismus NRW e.V.
Petra Hedorfer, CEO, GNTB, said, “We are already looking forward to the next GTM in Essen. The high level of interest in travel to Germany among the travel industry reflects the need for such a business platform. The Ruhr region exemplifies a successful transformation to an environmentally oriented region with a wide range of offers for nature and active vacations. Essen, on the other hand, underscores the region’s position as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for example, with the Zeche Zollverein and Villa Hügel, for example, underscores Germany’s position as Europe’s No. 1 cultural Europe. This supports our commitment to further develop the brand essence ‘Germany simply inspiring’ further toward even more sustainable tourism.”
The workshop will take place in the rooms of the Philharmonie and Saalbau. The meeting will be flanked by two events at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein and in the then newly opened Airship Hall at Essen-Mülheim Airport.
Mentioning of the Germany Travel Mart in Essen in 2023, Romit Theophilus, Director, Sales & Marketing, India, said, ‘‘The mart would be an excellent opportunity to explore Germany’s third-greenest city in the heart of the Ruhr region. Whether a city excursion, family vacation or a trip to a trade fair, Essen is always worth visiting. Whether one enjoys shopping in a vibrant metropolis, hiking and cycling in an idyllic countryside or art and culture in top notch museums, theatres or the UNESCO World Heritage site at the Zollverein collierey – Essen has everything!“.

Brand Destination Germany shapes positive mood at launch of GTM Germany Travel Mart 2021
GNTB survey of travel industry key accounts from 27 countries – Positive expectations for recovery in German incoming tourism.
NEW DELHI – For today's start of the GTM Germany Travel Mart (GTM), the German National Tourist Board (GNTB), as organizer, can build on a strong positive opinion of the international participants. Around a third of the key accounts from the international travel industry who registered for the GTM took part in an online survey conducted by the GNTB to analyse the mood and expectations.
95 percent of survey participants expect Germany as a travel destination to be at least as attractive to visitors again after the crisis as it was before, and almost 30 percent even expect Germany to gain market share in international competition.
Petra Hedorfer , Chairwoman of the GNTB's Executive Board: "Even in the Corona crisis, Destination Germany enjoys a high level of brand awareness and a positive mindset – both among customers and trade partners. This high level of confidence in the appeal of our brand continues in the business expectations expressed. Buyers attending the most important sales event for German incoming tourism are predominantly optimistic for the current fiscal year: more than half (53 percent) expect an improvement as early as 2021 compared to the crisis year 2020, and a third anticipate a similar business performance as in the previous year. At 58 percent, the positive mood regarding Germany as a travel destination is even above average among buyers from overseas markets. It is therefore important to provide all GTM participants – German suppliers as well as international buyers – with concrete information and arguments with which we can jointly create confidence among potential guests, convey security and further strengthen their willingness to travel."
In the travel managers' sentiment, recovery has already begun. Thirty-eight percent expect to return to pre-crisis levels as early as next year, and more than three-quarters overall say they will return to 2019 levels by 2023 at the latest.
The recovery phase is supported by an extraordinarily high level of appreciation among the buyers surveyed for the tourism products on offer in Destination Germany. The aspect of sustainability scores particularly well here: 84 percent rate the quality of sustainable products in Germany as good/very good. Digital offerings in Destination Germany also receive top marks: 93 percent of key accounts rate the digital content available as good to very good.
The vGTM 2021 goes online from April 27 – 29 as a digital event with around 250 German suppliers and 480 buyers from international travel companies which also includes 29 buyers from Pan India. The partner state of GTM 2021 is Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Tobias Woitendorf , Managing Director of the TMV: "Similar to the International Tourism Exchange Berlin, we are focusing on the future topics of safe travel, sustainability, health tourism and accessibility, which will be presented to trade visitors using practical examples. Even if travel is not yet possible, the exchange with international tour operators about changing framework conditions and travel interests is important. We need to think beyond Corona. For this, vGTM 2021 is a welcome and suitable platform."
With its Baltic coast, the Mecklenburg Lake District, UNESCO world heritage sites, Hanseatic cities and the state capital with its castle ensemble, Germany's north easternmost state offers a wide range of tourist attractions for international guests. Accordingly, "10 Reasons to Discover Mecklenburg-Vorpommern" is the title of a webinar with which the GTM partner state presents itself to international key accounts on the first day of the workshop.
With a comprehensive information program, vGTM 2021 supports all participants in developing recovery strategies to launch German inbound tourism out of the Corona crisis. This includes webinars, panel discussions and "Meet the Experts" sessions with market insights.

Germany Focuses on Inbound Tourism Recovery Ahead of GTM Germany Travel MartTM 2021
The 47th GTM Germany Travel MartTM 2021 will take place virtually between 27th –29th April with topics including post-COVID travel and sustainability
The German National Tourist Board (GNTB) will lead a country-wide delegation of tourism industry representatives to discuss inbound recovery plans post COVID-19 during the 47th GTM Germany Travel MartTM 2021, taking place later this month.
The virtual event organised by GNTB in partnership with the Federal State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will see a schedule of seminars between 27th – 29th April. As the largest tourism B2B event promoting Germany as a travel destination, it sets to highlight the best products and services across its tourism sector.
More than 250 German providers from top trade professionals including hotels, tour operators, transport, and local and regional tourist offices will join the online event, which is expected to attract over 480 international buyers from travel agencies and online travel companies. The event will serve as a platform to share trade knowledge and industry experience during these unprecedented times.
“Alongside our partners we have been working closely with the travel trade community throughout the pandemic, and GTM Germany Travel MartTM 2021 serves to provide additional information to attendees about offerings across the country, while reassuring traveller confidence with the various safety measures that have been put in place,” Yamina Sofo, Director Sales & Marketing, German National Tourist Office (GNTO), the regional office of GNTB, said.
“Now in its 47th edition, GTM Germany Travel MartTM 2021 serves as a networking platform between around 800 key participants from across international industry suppliers, this digital addition will ensure another successful year of introducing innovative ideas to the tourism industry.”
Strategic global partners will also lead extensive workshops and panel sessions on sustainability and how one of Germany’s top priorities is diversifying options of production to be well equipped for climate change. The interest of global participants demonstrates Germany’s awareness of sustainability and confirms the need for more development of market-specific eco-friendly options.
To kick proceedings off, and welcome GCC delegates to the event, Yamina Sofo will host a virtual meeting at 11:40am (GST) on 27 April. Later in the GTM schedule, Yamina will return to host a GCC Market Insights Webinar at 1pm (GST) on 29 April. It will serve to provide open discussions for new international safety measures and trends across the region. In addition to the live sessions between suppliers and buyers, the German National Tourist Board will launch webinars and on-demand content for those interested in participating.

The Moscow City Tourism Committee Conference for Major Stakeholders from the Indian MICE Market: Key Takeaways
Industry experts from Russia and India spoke at the ‘Shaping MICE Future Conference’ about the future of MICE events in these two nations. Moscow’s MICE potential was also highlighted, and attendees received an analytical report on the state of the outbound MICE market in India. During the panel discussion, participants evaluated the state of the MICE market in India and the unique aspects of its interactions. During the general brainstorming session, they developed proposals for the MICE business in Moscow. To discover new cross-partners in the Moscow business environment and amongst members of the hospitality industry, representatives of the Indian MICE industry took part in B2B negotiations.
Participants in the event from Moscow included MICE industry representatives. Academservice, Headed Goose, Satguru Travel, Isba Rus, Hug the Bear, and Mellenium Group were among the DMCs in attendance, along with representatives from other partners keen on fostering MICE collaboration between Russia and India, including hotels Edge Seligerskaya & Edge Vinogradovo Moscow by Rotana and global transfers provider i’way.
“We have seen a notable increase in the demand for transfers from Russian visitors to India in 2024—more than quadrupling—for business as well as leisure. Since the start of the year, 80% of transfer bookings have come from the capital, indicating that Muscovites are driving the trend. Furthermore, we see that Indian travel agencies are becoming more interested in visiting Russia, which has led to substantial growth in our collaboration,” said Dmitriy Saraykin, co-founder of Global Transfer Provider i’way.
By forming a pool of MICE industry leaders in Moscow, the Moscow City Tourism Committee was able to explain India’s requirements for business and corporate events as well as prioritise incoming requests for events, ultimately fostering mutually beneficial collaboration. This was made possible by the Shaping MICE Future conference. Indian colleagues were provided with current information regarding Moscow as a safe and attractive MICE destination. They also found possible partners among the Russian capital’s MICE industry representatives and showcased the MICE market in India.
“Within the tourism sector, the event presented a remarkable forum for profound discussion and collaboration. Our interactions with important tourism department stakeholders, tour operators, and service providers were made possible by the event. The knowledge acquired from the event confirmed the Moscow City Tourism Committee’s strong interest in the Indian outbound market, and we are optimistic about the city’s promising prospects as a travel destination, especially in the post-pandemic landscape.” Mudit Mathur, Director of Tours Delite India, who is representing Academ Service – Russia in India, shared his thoughts: “We firmly believe that with coordinated efforts and strategic initiatives, Moscow has the potential to emerge as a top-choice destination for Indian tourists.”
The conference also evaluated ways to address foreign demand for unconventional locations and MICE program elements like theatres, parks, and other establishments. It is becoming increasingly common to host MICE events at unique venues like the Moscow Planetarium, the State Historical Museum, and Khudozhestvenny Cinema. This gives attendees a one-of-a-kind experience and draws in conference organisers. While travelling in this way, many visitors who arrived in Moscow on business have expressed a desire to return and spend more time as recreational tourists.
