2021 Hyundai Tucson Overview

Is the 2021 hyundai tucson a good used suv.

Yes, the 2021 Tucson is a fine option if you're shopping for a used compact SUV . It's comfortable and relaxing to drive on a daily basis, and it offers lots of standard tech and safety features, an easy-to-use infotainment system and ample seating space in both rows. However, its engines struggle to get the SUV going in a hurry, and they're inefficient for the class.

We recommend checking out other well-rounded alternatives, including the 2021 Honda CR-V and 2021 Toyota RAV4 .

Which Used 2021 Hyundai Tucson Trim Is Right for Me?

The 2021 Hyundai Tucson comes in six trims: SE, Value, SEL, Sport, Limited and Ultimate. Sticking with the base SE trim should suffice as it comes packed with many standard features. However, the extra power of the 2.4-liter engine (found on SEL trims and up) may be worth the upgrade.

  • Hyundai Tucson SE: The entry-level SE trim comes with a 161-horsepower four-cylinder engine, a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available. Standard features include cloth upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, a 7-inch touch screen, a six-speaker stereo, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, a USB port, remote keyless entry, automatic climate control, a rearview camera, forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, driver-attention monitoring, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist.
  • Hyundai Tucson Value: The Value trim adds heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated side mirrors, HD Radio, satellite radio, proximity keyless entry, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
  • Hyundai Tucson SEL: The SEL trim gains a 181-horsepower four-cylinder engine, dual-zone automatic climate control and a second-row USB port.
  • Hyundai Tucson Sport: The Sport trim adds wireless device charging, an eight-speaker stereo, a hands-free power liftgate and LED headlights.
  • Hyundai Tucson Limited: The Limited trim gains leather upholstery, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, a heated steering wheel, a surround-view parking camera system and a chrome grille.
  • Hyundai Tucson Ultimate: Additional features in the Ultimate trim include ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, an 8-inch touch screen, navigation, a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection and automatic high-beam headlights.

What Does Hyundai's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Hyundai offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles five years old or less and with fewer than 60,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale date. Certified pre-owned Hyundai vehicles receive the balance of the original new-car 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, as well as the remainder of the five-year/60,000-mile comprehensive warranty. Hyundai CPO vehicles must pass a 173-point inspection. Additional benefits like towing, roadside assistance, and rental car reimbursement may be available.

Hyundai has one of the better CPO programs among affordable car manufacturers, according to our analysis. Still, automakers like Kia, Mini and Honda have better programs.

Extended Warranties for Hyundai Cars and SUVs

Not every used Hyundai will qualify for a certified pre-owned warranty. However, there are options available if you want additional coverage after the manufacturer’s warranty has expired.

2021 Hyundai Tucson Versus the Competition

2021 hyundai tucson vs. 2021 kia sportage.

The 2021 Kia Sportage is another compact SUV worth considering. Like the Tucson, it has many standard features, a comfortable ride and composed handling. The Sportage stands out as the better vehicle though. The Kia has nicer cabin materials and a peppier turbocharged engine, which is unavailable in the Tucson.

Compare the Tucson and Sportage »

2021 Hyundai Tucson vs. 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe

The 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe is part of the midsize SUV class , but it shares some common ground with the Tucson. Both of these five-seat crossover SUVs have comparable standard and available features, as well as the same easy-to-use infotainment system. However, there are some differences. If you want a zestier turbocharged engine, go for the Santa Fe, which also comes with a heftier tow rating and a more spacious cabin. For a more fuel-efficient — and typically more affordable — vehicle, stick with the Tucson.

2021 Tucson Performance

How does the 2021 hyundai tucson drive .

The 2021 Tucson has two engine choices, but neither of them are inspiring. The base 2.0-liter engine feels underpowered, and it results in languid acceleration and lackluster passing power at higher speeds. The upgraded 2.4-liter variant provides more oomph for commuting around town, but its highway passing power isn't much better. On a bright note, the automatic transmission delivers quick, smooth shifts.

The Tucson's ride quality is apt to please most shoppers. The suspension keeps the vehicle stable around turns and soaks up road bumps with aplomb. You can easily weave the Tucson around tight city streets, and its steering is light and direct.

  • Base engine: 161-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder (SE and Value)
  • Available engine: 181-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder (SEL, Sport, Limited and Ultimate)
  • Drivetrain: standard front-wheel drive; available all-wheel drive
  • Transmission: six-speed automatic

2021 Hyundai Tucson Gas Mileage

Tucson models with the base 2.0-liter engine get up to an EPA-estimated 23 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The Tucson delivers up to 22/28 mpg city/highway with its upgraded 2.4-liter engine. These are below-average estimates for the compact SUV segment .

2021 Hyundai Tucson Towing Capacity

The Tucson can tow up to 2,000 pounds when equipped with its 2.4-liter engine, while models with the 2.0-liter engine can tow up to 1,500 pounds.

2021 Tucson Interior

2021 tucson interior quality.

The Tucson's cabin is well-built, and the materials quality is on par with most of the competition. However, the overall styling is plain and beginning to show its age.

How Many People Does the 2021 Tucson Seat?

The Tucson seats up to five people. The front seats are supportive, comfortable and spacious enough for taller occupants. The rear seats aren't as cushy, but there's enough room for two adults.

Standard seating features:

  • Cloth upholstery
  • Manually adjustable front seats

Available seating features:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated front seats
  • Ventilated front seats
  • Power-adjustable front seats
  • Heated rear seats
  • Heated steering wheel

How Many Child Car Seats Fit in the 2021 Hyundai Tucson?

The Tucson has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the LATCH system in models with cloth upholstery the second-highest rating of Acceptable for its ease of use, while models with leather upholstery received the second-lowest rating of Marginal. The upper tethers are straightforward to use, but too much force is needed to attach the lower anchors, especially in models with the leather seats.

2021 Hyundai Tucson Features

The Tucson's infotainment system gets high marks. The touch screen is easy to see and reach while driving, thanks to its high placement on the dashboard. The menus are straightforward and responsive as well. Beyond that, you'll find physical buttons and knobs for adjusting common functions like the audio and climate controls.

  • Standard infotainment features: a 7-inch touch screen, a six-speaker stereo, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth and a USB port
  • Available infotainment features: an 8-inch touch screen, HD Radio, satellite radio, a second-row USB port, wireless device charging, an eight-speaker stereo and navigation
  • Additional standard features: remote keyless entry and automatic climate control
  • Other available features: proximity keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control and a panoramic sunroof

2021 Hyundai Tucson Review

hyundai tucson travel 2021

There's an all-new Tucson coming for 2022 , but this is not about that bold, sharply creased crossover. Nope, this covers the 2021 Hyundai Tucson, which carries over unchanged into the last year of a six-year generation. As always, it's a well-executed if forgettable compact crossover that delivers strong value. You get lots of equipment for your money, a lengthy warranty and easy-to-use technology. Its interior design has also aged quite well despite imminently facing the sunset.

There are issues, however, that go beyond the simple fact that a multitude of newer, more impressive competitors have debuted in the past six years. It's an unusual size, for one. It's either one of the smallest compact crossovers ( Toyota RAV4 , Honda CR-V , etc.), or the biggest among a growing number of "in-betweener" choices ( Mazda CX-30 , Kia Seltos , etc.). Perhaps that's not such a bad thing, but its fuel economy is indisputably an issue as its 23 mpg combined with all-wheel drive falls between 3 and 6 mpg below crossovers in either of the above size categories. There's also the matter of the Tucson being comparatively mundane to drive. In other words, we'd wait to see what next year brings (or just get something else).

What's new for 2021?

The Tucson gets some new colors for '21.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

What's the Tucson interior and in-car technology like?

The interior's design and layout are attractive and functional, though there's little to differentiate the uppermost "Ultimate" trim level from the others. Though similar in appearance to the bigger, pricier Santa Fe, there are more poor-quality plastics littered about. At least Hyundai makes sure that the pieces you most frequently touch are nicely textured and/or soft.

As all modern Hyundai infotainment systems go, this one is easy to use and relatively simple, but it isn’t the prettiest to look at. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard on the cheapest of Tucsons, because Hyundai makes its 7-inch touchscreen standard equipment. An 8-inch screen with navigation and upgraded audio system is added to the Limited and Ultimate trims.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

How big is the Tucson?

Slices of the crossover pie are getting awfully skinny. The Tucson has always been one of the smallest "compact" crossovers, with a shorter overall length (176.4 inches) and significantly less cargo space (31.0 cubic feet behind the back seat) than popular models like the Honda CR-V , Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester. Rear seat legroom is competitive with those, however. This meant it was a good match for those without kids who will happily sacrifice some family-friendly, stuff-hauling space for greater maneuverability. Today, however, there's a growing number of "in-betweener" choices that are just a bit smaller, including the Mazda CX-30 and Kia Seltos . We're honestly not sure if the Tucson's size makes it an oddball or a Goldilocks choice for a select few.

Do you really spell Tucson like that?

Yes, take it up with Arizona.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

What are the performance and fuel economy?

The Tucson SE and Value trim levels are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 161 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive are standard, while all-wheel drive is optional. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 23 mpg city, 28 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined with FWD, and 22/25/23 with AWD. Both are considerably worse than the best-selling compact SUVs.

All other trims get a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that makes 181 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. It too has a six-speed automatic with the choice of standard FWD or optional AWD. Fuel economy is basically the same as the base engine at 22/28/25 with FWD and 21/26/23 with AWD.

What's the Tucson like to drive?

The Hyundai Tucson is pretty forgettable to drive. Its handling is adequate, and while it’s not especially maneuverable at low speeds, it never feels big when winding through tight parking lots. The most we can recall about the steering was that it succeeded in turning the car, while the ride comfort and interior noise are similarly acceptable.

We’ve only driven a Tucson with the bigger four-cylinder engine and found the power to be on the lower side of adequate. The less powerful 2.0-liter will just feel even slower. We weren’t disappointed in the performance from the smooth and relatively responsive six-speed torque converter automatic. The front-driver has a tendency to torque steer at low speeds, which is just one more reason to opt for Hyundai's smart HTRAC all-wheel-drive system that shunts more power than usual to the rear wheels for improved dry-weather handling (including for the usual poor-weather traction). You can also lock the system 50:50.

A base SE is equipped with plenty of standard equipment like alloy wheels, driver assistance systems (see Safety section) automatic headlights, heated mirrors, rear privacy glass, stain-resistant upholstery, and a 7-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The base price for each trim level is listed below, but we provide a full breakdown of features, specs and local pricing  here on Autoblog . All-wheel drive can be had on any trim for $1,400.

What are its safety equipment and crash ratings?

Every Tucson includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist and a driver inattention warning system. Blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning are included on all but the base trim, while the Ultimate trim adds pedestrian detection for the FCW system plus automatic high beams and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability.

The Tucson got top five-star crash ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in all categories but rollover where it got four stars (totally normal for an SUV). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named it a Top Safety Pick for 2020 due to its best-possible ratings in all crash categories as well as for its accident-avoidance technology. The halogen headlights found on the lowest three trim levels got a "Poor" rating, but the upgrade LEDs on upper trim levels got the best-possible "Good."

2021 Hyundai Tucson: Plenty To Like

As Hyundai moves toward an electrified future, it’s positioned its remaining gas-powered models in a decidedly upscale and future-forward direction, especially from a styling and powertrain standpoint. This is true for the 2022 Hyundai Tucson, which will have a both conventional hybrid and plug-in hybrid variant as well as a sportier N Line. Hyundai shuffled the trim lineup, but the starting price will be $26,135 (including a $1,185 delivery fee), which is a $1,250 jump.

But the perfectly fine 2021 Tucson is still on sale at dealerships (for less money), though it isn’t sporting the fresh styling and updated tech of its successor.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

The current Tucson isn’t completely outdone by the 2022 model, however. It’s got the smooth, comfortable ride that families and casual car buyers expect, and the ten year or 100,000-mile warranty. Since the 2021 model year will close out the current third-generation Tucson, Hyundai has made no changes to the vehicle, other than swapping in a few new colors.

The crossover is a big seller for Hyundai, topping 100,000 units each year since 2017. Howeverm compared with rivals such as the Honda CR-V , which consistently sells over 300,000 units per year, it’s way behind.

Hyundai offers the Tucson in six trims: SE, Value, SEL, Sport, Limited and Ultimate. Two powertrains are on tap, depending on trim level. The SE and Value trims are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 161 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. The SEL trim and above are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 181-horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and either front- or all-wheel drive.

The base SE trim ($24,885, including destination) comes with 17-inch wheels, projector headlights, cloth upholstery, manual seat adjustments, a 60/40-splitting rear seat, a 7-inch touchscreen, six speakers , Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB inputs, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, adaptive cruise control, a driver attention warning system, lane keeping assist and forward collision avoidance assist. Though Hyundai includes these four features as safety equipment, they don’t meet what Forbes Wheels considered mandatory standard safety equipment. Moving to the Value trim ($26,335) adds blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, which we would prefer to see as standard. The Value trims also brings other basics like power seat adjustments, heated front seats, SiriusXM radio and HD radio.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

Stepping up to the SEL trim ($27,285) adds 18-inch wheels, LED exterior lighting, second-row USB outlets and dual-zone automatic climate controls. The Sport trim ($29,435) comes with even larger 19-inch wheels, a hands-free power liftgate, a 315-watt Infinity sound system, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather-wrapped shift knob.

The Limited model ($30,585) adds back the smaller 18-inch wheels, leather upholstery, a premium gauge cluster display, a heated steering wheel and a surround-view camera system. The range-topping $33,235 Ultimate model brings a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation, rain-sensing wipers and forward collision assist with pedestrian detection.

The Tucson’s base 2.0-liter engine may have healthy numbers on paper, but it doesn’t inspire much engagement from behind the wheel. It is capable enough, however, to move the compact Tucson around town with ease. On the highway, the smaller engine is noisy under hard acceleration but is otherwise fine at reaching highway speeds and passing. The larger optional 2.4-liter engine offers better acceleration in all driving scenarios.

Ride quality is a standout feature for the Tucson. The crossover remains quiet and compliant over most road surfaces, and though its handling isn’t memorable, the Tucson manages curves with minimal body roll and unwanted movement. The leisurely handling and acceleration are well suited for the Tucson’s upscale and reserved personality.

Inside, passengers will find a well-enough appointed cabin for the price and nice-looking interior finishes and intuitive controls. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, and even the base cloth upholstery is soft and feels premium, despite using a stain-, odor- and static-resistant material. Leather and more power options are added at the Limited trim level, but most people will be satisfied with the mid-range accommodations.

In the front, head and leg room are both adequate at 39.6 inches and 41.5 inches, respectively. The same is true for the rear with 39.2 inches of headroom and 38.2 inches of legroom. The available sunroof cuts slightly into those numbers.

Cargo capacity is an unimpressive 30 cubic-feet behind the rear seats. This is a bottom-class figure compared with its fierce competitive set, which includes the Nissan Rogue (39.3 cubic-feet), the CR-V and Ford Edge (both have 39.2 cubic-feet) and the Toyota RAV4 (37.6). With the second row folded, stowage expands to 61.9 cubic-feet.

Hyundai’s infotainment software is simple and no-frills (on either the standard 7-inch or upgraded 8-inch touchscreen), which is refreshing in today’s everything-and-the-kitchen-sink approach to infotainment. The native system offers menus that are clearly labeled and easy to understand, and the screens themselves are responsive, which makes using them while driving much less distracting. Most buyers will be happy with the standard access to the ubiquitous Apple CarPlay and Android Auto platforms.

The 2021 Tucson earned a Top Safety Pick designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and five stars overall from NHTSA.

Hyundai Tucson

Even with various updates over the years, the Tucson still isn't a stronger contender among the more competitive compact SUVs. It has a more modern interior and remains a fundamentally well-rounded compact SUV, but overall it trails the top vehicles in the class.

Hyundai vs. other new car brands, owner reports, 2021 compact suvs ratings.

In most cases, automotive warranties are based on the vehicle identification number (VIN), and the warranty will be valid regardless of ownership. The dealership can tell you exactly how much warranty is left.

  • 6-speed Automatic
  • 2-liter 4 (161 hp)
  • 2.4-liter 4 (181 hp)

The redesigned fourth-generation Tucson compact SUV is much more substantial than the mediocre model it replaces. With the standard 187-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the Tucson has a polished operation but accelerates leisurely. The hybrid’s pairing of a 1.6-liter turbo engine and electric assist puts out a combined 226 hp and got 35 mpg overall in our tests. The ride is firm yet steady, handling is responsive and secure, and the nicely-trimmed cabin is relatively quiet. The back seat is roomy and the cargo area is generous for the class. Controls are easy to use. But higher trims replace physical volume and temperature knobs with touch-sensitive controls and a push-button gear selector. Standard active safety features include FCW, AEB with pedestrian detection, BSW, LDW, and LKA. Adaptive cruise control and remote parking are optional.

The redesigned-for-2016 Tucson shares only its name with the previous generation. Now it's more inline with the larger Santa Fe Sport and Santa Fe SUVs. The overall package is more competitive against the segment leaders. The base version has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, linked to a six-speed automatic. This version is rather slow and returned 24 mpg overall. More expensive trims get a 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder that uses a seven-speed automated manual transmission. This quieter and quicker setup returned 26 mpg overall, but it suffers from a vibration at very low speed, such as in parking maneuvers. Otherwise, ride comfort is pliant and composed, handling is responsive and secure, and the cabin is quiet. Controls are easy to use, and the rear seat is roomy. The Tucson has available lane departure warning, blind-spot warning, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking. A new 181-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic arrived in  2018. In our tests, it was faster than the 2.0-liter but returned only 22 mpg overall.  The Tucson got a freshening for 2019 which included replacing the previous top-level engine choice (1.6-liter turbo mated to a clunky seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission) with a 2.4-liter and a regular automatic. A few interior touches, such as an electronic parking brake, were introduced as well.

New Hyundai Tucson 2021 review

The head-turning and hi-tech hyundai tucson suv is set to challenge its premium rivals.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

4.5 out of 5

carwow logo

The Tucson really does feel like a watershed vehicle for Hyundai - the model that realises the company’s ambition of being not a value-led budget brand but rather a proper mainstream player like VW, whose products can steal customers from the premium market. The Tucson is that impressive - solid dynamically, properly practical, usefully efficient in hybrid form, and with a well-finished cabin that oozes tech in all the right places.

This year is already shaping up to be another big 12 months for Hyundai . Its latest supermini, the i20 , has recently proven that it’s right up there with the best in the class. And now the Korean brand hopes to nudge its family SUV, the Tucson , right to the top of its segment and even a little beyond it.

That’s because this Tucson really is a big step forward for the brand. Hyundai is aiming to be included on the shortlists of not only mainstream customers but also some premium buyers - quite a leap from the company’s budget image of old.

Best family cars - header image

That means that this Tucson - the fourth model to carry that name, although the UK missed out a couple of generations when it used the iX35 badge instead - has to deliver better practicality than ever, coupled with the sort of tech and interior quality that merits a higher price tag. Because, yes, it has one; this car now starts at a smidgen under £28,000, and rises to almost £37,000 - and that’s before the presumably more expensive plug-in hybrid edition arrives later in the spring.

Even discounting that version, there’s certainly no shortage of electrified options in the range. You can have a pure petrol Tucson if you’d like - indeed, the 148bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol is the entry point in the line-up. But alongside it there’s a 48-volt mild hybrid (148bhp or 178bhp, with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic) and a full hybrid, as tested here. It uses the same 1.6 petrol engine but has a 1.49kWh battery and a 59bhp electric motor that sits between the engine and the six-speed automatic gearbox, boosting the total output to 227bhp.

We were pretty impressed with the same set-up when we tried a left-hand-drive edition of this car in the UK late last year. But that car was in the equivalent of Ultimate trim - a £37k model. Here we’re trying the same powertrain but in mid-range Premium spec, which comes in at a more encouraging £34,455 and is tipped to be popular with buyers.

Hyundai Tucson - rear tracking

At this juncture, Hyundai may well point out that the majority of the outgoing model’s sales were top-end versions. But on paper at least, even the entry-level SE Connect is hardly going to leave you feeling short-changed. You get 17in alloy wheels, dual-zone air conditioning, cruise control, rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera, heated and folding door mirrors, and 10.25-inch screens for both the infotainment and the instrument panel.

Stepping up to Premium brings some additional safety kit, 18-inch alloy wheels (19-inch on the hybrid), a premium audio system, front parking sensors, LED headlights and heating on the front seats and steering wheel – all features that buyers of SUVs this size are likely to want. Ultimate spec pushes up further by including heated rear seats, three-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof and a powered tailgate.

The cynics amongst you may have already concluded that with just 1.49kWh of battery to call upon, the Tucson will be all too eager to draw on the engine’s reserves as you pull away from rest. And sure enough, it is; you’ll do well to get more than a few yards before the little ‘EV’ indicator on the dashboard goes out to show that combustion is now involved.

Hyundai Tucson - interior

But there are a couple of caveats you should be aware of. The first is that the transition is incredibly smooth. The second is that once you’re up to speed - say, 30mph around town - you’ll find that the EV light comes back on as the system realises it has achieved a sensible cruise and starts to save fuel.

It’s not a small car, the Tucson. At 4.5 metres, it’s longer than a VW Tiguan and only just shy of Toyota’s RAV4, an obvious rival also offered with hybrid power. But around town, you should find north of 45mpg quite achievable. And in truth, this figure is only likely to take a really major hit if you go beyond fast motorway running and actually start mashing the right-hand pedal for every bit of acceleration.

The smooth character of the powertrain continues out of town too, for the Tucson’s set-up feels more conventional to drive than the likes of the RAV4, with its complex CVT configuration. You’ll soon learn how to encourage kickdown in the Hyundai when required, and how to avoid it when you’re happy to maintain a steady speed (and save fuel). It’s keen to shift up early, perhaps using the electric motor’s assistance to help mask the fact that the engine does get a bit thrashy when it reaches higher revs.

There are just two driving modes, flicked to via a small switch at the base of the centre console. The car defaults to Eco, which is probably the best everyday set-up. Moving into Sport flashes red graphics onto the digital instrument panel and increases the amount of assistance the electric motor can give to performance. Throttle response improves, but as the focus sharpens, so does the frequency with which you’ll hear the engine’s slightly metallic tones.

Beneath it all, the increasing influence of ex-BMW M-Division boss Albert Biermann over Hyundai’s chassis tuning is evident again. While the newly launched i20 has a firm edge to its ride as a trade-off for unusual agility, the scope of what was achievable with the larger Tucson has clearly been wider. That is to say that this feels like a well-resolved compromise, capable of soaking up broken surfaces and sharper jolts around town and at higher speeds, while still maintaining control through corners.

The steering has heft, consistency and directness, so the end result is a car that is perhaps not quite as involving as a Ford Kuga but which is every bit as composed as a RAV4, and slightly more direct and agile. It would be a push to describe it as fun, but the Tucson would be an admirable companion for a long cross-country jaunt.

Ioniq 5 - front

The cabin would play its part in that, for the step gain in quality inside is every bit as significant as the dynamics - perhaps more so. It’s all a bit dark and grey in the front, but there’s a small strip of fabric across the top of the fascia to inject at least a little colour. And the layout itself is clean and uncluttered, with very few physical clickable switches and most major functions controlled by touch-sensitive buttons.

Stuff you’d want ready access to, such as the heating and ventilation, is given its own area, as it should be. And above it sits Hyundai’s latest 10.25-inch widescreen infotainment system, blessed with excellent screen resolution, deep blacks and rich colours. It’s paired with a similarly sized digital instrument panel, that sits within a cleaner dashboard arrangement that lacks the traditional overhanging cowl.

This tech feels neatly integrated into its environment, and the experience is enhanced further by a neatly judged blend of premium finishes - solid piano-black surrounds near the gear selector, strips of chrome, the aforementioned fabric and high-grade, squishy, textured plastic. There’s nothing in here that would look out of place in a VW Tiguan - and plenty that could also serve in an Audi Q3 .

The new Tucson’s wheelbase is just one centimetre longer than before, but the packaging mix has delivered a cabin that can swallow four six-footers with ease, thanks to generous rear knee, leg and headroom. Only the raised central floor mars the car’s abilities as a proper five-seater.

The boot capacity is a generous 616 litres - around 30 litres more than you’ll find in a RAV4. We’d like a few more hooks or luggage storage aids in there, but in general the space and flat floor should be able to cope with most everyday needs.

A Complete Guide To The 2024 Hyundai Tucson

There's plenty to like about the 2024 Hyundai Tucson. From its edgy styling to the raft of standard and available tech, it is a thoroughly modern compact SUV. It has above-average interior and cargo space and plenty of practical features, too.

The 2.5-liter non-hybrid engine offers broadly similar performance to the Toyota RAV4 and Kia Sportage. Still, you'll want one of the Hybrid powertrains for the best economy and acceleration. We cover these in a separate review.

What the gas-powered Hyundai Tucson lacks in outright pace, it makes up for with a competitively low starting price and all the practicality and features you could ask for in a family SUV.

This guide provides comprehensive information provided by the manufacturer. HotCars sourced additional data for reliability (from J.D. Power), EPA gas mileage (Fueleconomy.gov), safety ratings (IIHS), and recalls (NHTSA). We evaluate five different metrics when determining a rating for each model. You can read our Methodology page for more information about how our rating system works.

Why The 2023 Hyundai Tucson Is A Better Family SUV Than Honda CR-V

The Hyundai Tucson was completely redesigned in 2022. Since then, it has received only minor trim levels and standard specifications changes. For 2024, some trim levels have been shuffled around, and a few new safety items have been added to the range.

2024 Highlights

  • N-Line trim removed from range (added to Hybrid Range)
  • Seatbelt reminders are now standard for all occupants
  • Rear-side airbags have been added to all models
  • Rear outboard seatbelt pre-tensioners are now added to all models
  • Steering wheel haptic feedback was added to the Lane Keep Assist and Blind Spot Avoidance systems
  • Hampton Gray has replaced Amazon Gray as an exterior color option

Exterior Dimensions

The non-hybrid Tucson is available with a 187 horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine . It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission which sends power to the front wheels as standard. AWD is optional on all trims. Performance is acceptable rather than exciting, with the 0-60mph sprint taking around 8.7-seconds.

This is similar to the mechanically identical Kia Sportage but a tad behind the turbocharged 190 horsepower Honda CR-V and 203 horsepower Toyota RAV4. In day-to-day driving, the Tucson performs well, and the conventional torque-converter automatic gearbox doesn't hang onto the revs like the Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT) you find in some rivals.

It also provides unruffled progress at highway speeds, but overtaking slower traffic when fully laden will require some pre-planning. If you feel the need for speed, then one of the pricier Hybrid Tucsons may be a better fit.

Performance Specifications

Towing capabilities and payload capacity.

The Tucson is rated to tow up to 2,000 pounds in any trim, Which is better than the Honda CR-V (1,500 lbs) but slightly below the Kia Sportage (2,500 lbs). Compact SUVs aren't designed to tow boats or caravans, but the Tucson's 2,000 lbs load limit should be enough to pull most trailers.

The payload capacity ranges from 1,098 - 1,283 lbs. This is comparable to other SUVs in this class and means that you can safely pack it with up to five adults and their luggage.

*AWD trim payload 2 lbs less than FWD figure

Off-Road Capability

The standard Tucson is available in FWD and offers 7.1 inches of ground clearance. This should be enough for most dirt roads and rough urban conditions. The AWD versions offer a bit more grip and 8.3 inches of ground clearance, which makes them the better choice if you intend to do some light off-roading.

The XRT trim adds some cool off-road styling pieces but no additional off-roading ability. The sidesteps and roof rack may come in handy, though.

Best Compact Crossover: 2022 Hyundai Tucson Vs 2021 Nissan Rogue

Best interior features of the 2024 hyundai tucson.

  • Heated 8-way power seats standard on all but the base SE trim
  • Ventilated and heated leather seats standard on Limited trim
  • 8-inch color touchscreen standard on lower trims
  • Above average passenger and cargo space
  • High quality materials on all trims

The interior of the Hyundai Tucson has a very modern, minimalist feel. Soft-touch materials are throughout the cabin, and higher trims offer leather seats with heating and power adjustment. The center console houses two deep cupholders and an armrest large enough for two elbows. Legroom front and rear is more generous than you would get in a Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4.

Even in base trim, the Tucson feels like an upmarket vehicle and is comfortable for a long road trip. Thanks to 38.7 cubic feet of storage space behind the rear seats, you won't need to leave any bags behind, either.

The base SE trim is fitted with an 8-inch color touchscreen that responds well to inputs and comes with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. SEL trims add SiriusXM, VR, and Bluelink+. If you step up to the XRT and Limited trim, you get a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, but lose the wireless smartphone connectivity. Another frustrating side effect of the larger screen is the integration of the HVAC controls, which makes it fussier to use.

That's why we'd stick with the lower two trims, and use the wireless smartphone connectivity for Sat Nav. Unfortunately, you do miss out on the Bose Premium Audio System. A rearview camera is standard on all trims, as are dual front USB ports, with higher trims also getting second row dual USB ports as well. All trims are fitted with a digital driver display.

Interior Dimensions

* 38.3 With Convenience Package

The Hyundai Tucson has received a five star overall safety rating from the IIHS , earning it a 2024 Top Safety Pick in the process. It scored a top 'Good' rating across most segments except for its headlights and ease of use for the LATCH connectors, where it was rated as 'Acceptable.' The NHTSA also awarded it a five-star overall safety rating.

Having been on sale for just over two years now, long-term reliability is still unknown. However, judging from other Hyundai vehicles, the Tucson should be above average in this regard. It also comes with a very generous warranty should anything go wrong during the ownership period.

Driver Assistance Features

The Hyundai Tucson comes packed with driver assistance features including lane departure warning and lane keep assist. Blind-spot collision avoidance, rear cross-traffic assist and rear occupant alert are also standard on all trims.

For 2024, a seatbelt reminder is now standard for all occupants, and rear-side airbags have been added to all models. A rear outboard seatbelt pre-tensioner is now standard fitment as well.

Standard on all trims:

  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Driver Attention Warning
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Lane Following Assist
  • Intelligent Speed Limit Assist
  • Rear Occupant Alert

Park Distance Warning, Highway Driving Assist, and Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control with Curve Control are fitted to the top Limited trim.

IIHS Crash Testing

Nhtsa 5-star safety ratings.

  • Recalls (NHTSA): 2
  • NHTSA Investigations: 0
  • NHTSA Consumer Complaints: 13 - issues with forward collision avoidance system, electrical system and complaints about the low height of the turn signals.
  • Awards: IIHS Top Safety Pick 2024

There have been two recalls so far for the Hyundai Tucson . The first was for incorrect information on a label regarding spare tire pressures, and the second was for an electric oil pump assembly that may overheat and cause a fire risk.

Complaints about Tucson have been gradually falling from 207 for the 2022 model down to 67 in 2023, and just 13 so far in 2024. The most common complaint in 2024 has been regarding the forward collision avoidance system activating for no apparent reason.

These Are The Coolest Features Of The 2022 Hyundai Tucson

Hyundai continues to offer one of the most impressive warranties around. Not only do you get a very generous 10-year powertrain warranty, but a 3-year/36,000-mile complimentary service package is also included. Aside from Kia, this surpasses anything that its rivals have to offer.

There are plenty of great SUVs to choose from in this category. But two of the Tucson's toughest rivals are the Kia Sportage and the hugely popular Toyota RAV4 . Both offer impressive safety features, plenty of space and are good value. Read on to see how the Hyundai Tucson matches up with them.

How The Hyundai Tucson Compares To The Toyota RAV4

The RAV4 is the quintessential compact SUV. That's probably because it created the segment way back in the 1990s. It has evolved and grown significantly since then, and remains a benchmark in its class. This latest generation continues to outsell most competitors thanks to its solid reliability, fuss-free driving experience and impressive safety features.

It may not have the impressive tech that higher trims of the Tucson offer, and its warranty offering is also found wanting, but in every other area, the RAV4 remains a class act. The base 2.5-liter engine offers a bit more performance and is more fuel efficient than the Tucson, as well.

How The Hyundai Tucson Compares To The Kia Sportage

Take a look at the comparison tab above, and it looks very much like a cut-and-paste job. That's because these two SUVs share the majority of their mechanical components. Performance levels are essentially the same, as are safety and equipment levels.

The main variables are styling and what each trim levels offer. The Kia Sportage starts off slightly below the Tucson in pricing, but the top spec models are slightly higher. One area where the Kia scores highly is in the more intuitive and user-friendly infotainment and HVAC controls.

The Tucson is a lot of car for the money. While the base trim makes do without leather seats, or the larger 10.25-inch infotainment display, it still offers all the essential safety features and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

It may be less powerful and not quite as efficient as the Hybrid offerings, but it's also over $5,000 cheaper than the Hybrid and a whopping $11,225 less than the base Plug-In Hybrid. Recouping that will take years of driving.

10 Things To Know Before Buying The 2022 Hyundai Tucson

The Hyundai Tucson is not a class leader when it comes to fuel economy. Aside from the Kia Sportage it falls short of rivals like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 which both offer 30mpg in combined driving. Opting for AWD dents the fuel economy by another 3mpg, which is more than for most rivals. So only tick that box if you intend to do some light off roading.

There's a lot to like about the 2024 Hyundai Tucson. It is comfortable and spacious and looks modern inside and out. It offers great value, too, as long as you stick to the lower trims. In isolation, it is a competent compact SUV that offers a pleasant driving experience and plenty of tech.

When compared to the opposition, it falls short on economy and overall performance, but the keen starting price and impressive warranty should sway those looking for a capable and stylish family vehicle.

A Complete Guide To The 2024 Hyundai Tucson

I drove Hyundai's best-selling SUV and found it's a perfect hybrid for people who don't like hybrids

  • The Hyundai Tucson Hybrid is a compact crossover SUV that rivals competitors from Toyota and Honda.
  • I enjoyed the Tucson Hybrid's stylish looks, new tech, solid performance, and fuel efficiency.
  • I was disappointed with the somewhat unrefined drivetrain and transmission.

Insider Today

Compact crossover SUVs are now the most popular form of automobile on American roads, accounting for roughly one in five new vehicles sold during the first quarter of this year, according to data from Cox Automotive .

For the past 20 years, Hyundai's offering in this crucial segment has been the Tucson.

During that time, the strikingly stylish Tucson has evolved into the brand's best-selling model, with nearly 210,000 units sold in 2023. It's also one of the most popular models in the segment, with its fourth generation launching in 2021.

I recently spent a week with a 2024 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Limited AWD around the roads of suburban Atlanta to see why it's so popular with buyers.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

I was impressed. The Tucson Hybrid is a great little SUV with a quiet cabin, comfortable ride, loads of tech, peppy performance, and futuristic looks. But it isn't perfect — the unrefined engine and transmission proved a bit annoying.

The SUV is available in traditional internal-combustion form, as a hybrid, and as a plug-in hybrid.

The base Tucson SE in front-wheel drive starts at $27,500, while the top-spec Tucson Plug-in Hybrid Limited with all-wheel drive starts at $45,450.

My test car, a Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Limited with AWD, starts at $39,465. With fees, the car carried a price of $41,010.

The Tucson Hybrid competes with a handful of rivals in the segment.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

The Tucson Hybrid goes head-to-head with the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid , Honda CR-V Hybrid , Ford Escape Hybrid, and its corporate cousin, the Kia Sportage Hybrid.

While some versions of Tucson are made at Hyundai's plant in Montgomery, Alabama, the Tucson Hybrid is assembled in Ulsan, South Korea.

What immediately stands out about the Tucson is its striking looks.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

The Tucson's stylish sheet metal is the work of a team led by Hyundai's chief of global design, SangYup Lee, whose other works include the Bentley Bentayga and the fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro of Bubblebee fame.

The striking design starts with the front grille's parametric jewel pattern, created using geometric algorithms instead of traditional sketches or drawings. The coolest part of the design is the LED daytime running lights embedded in the grille, which look like dark chrome when turned off.

Here's a closer look at Hyundai's parametric jewel hidden lights.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

The Tucson's actual LED headlights are nestled below and to the side of the grille.

The geometric shapes continue beyond the front grille.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

The overall design of the Tucson is punctuated with sharp, chiseled surfaces. According to Hyundai, the prominent angular wheel arches are styled to evoke vehicles created by Bertone , the defunct Italian design house responsible for some of the wildest supercars of the 1960s and '70s.

I'm a fan of the Tucson's optional 19-inch alloys.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

Lower-trim models come with 17-inch wheels.

The rear of the Tucson features vertical LED taillights protruding from a light bar that runs across the tailgate.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

Hyundai has also hidden the rear wiper under the spoiler.

The Tucson is about 1 inch longer than the Toyota RAV4 but 2.5 inches shorter than the Honda CR-V.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

All-wheel-drive variants of the Tucson, including my test vehicle, offer 8.3 inches of ground clearance, which is virtually identical to that of comparable RAV4 and CR-V models. Ground clearance for front-wheel-drive variants drops to 7.1 inches.

The interior is comfortable and relaxing.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

Aesthetically, the front dash and center console are designed to remind occupants of water meeting a central point before flowing down a waterfall.

I was a fan of the diffuser vents that line the entire width of the front dash. They augment the Tucson's traditional air-conditioning vents and give the occupants the feeling of a gentle, evenly distributed breeze.

The material and build quality felt good but did not convey the same solid feeling one would find in a Toyota or Honda. I like the minimalist look of the shiny black piano material on the center console, but I also found it incredibly prone to smudges and scratches.

The Tucson's overall cabin ergonomics were sound. The touch-sensitive infotainment and climate-control buttons on the dash were easy to use, though I would have preferred a physical volume knob.

The leather-trimmed front seats are heated and ventilated.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

Front-seat passengers have access to a wireless phone charger, two USB-A plugs, and a 12V socket.

I also liked the push-button shifter, which frees up space above the center console.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

And the novel footwell map pockets, which provide additional cabin storage.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

The optional panoramic sunroof helps support the relaxing feel of the cabin.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

The cabin is also equipped with 64-color ambient lighting and an ultrasonic rear-occupant alert system.

In front of the driver is a nicely molded, leather-wrapped steering wheel.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

In front of the steering wheel is an optional 10.25-inch configurable digital instrumental display.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

Lower-trim models get an old-school analog instrument cluster.

The instrument display is home to a blind-spot monitor.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

It uses rear-view-mirror-mounted cameras to give drivers a view of their blind spots when changing lanes.

Here's a closer look at the camera.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

The Tucson Hybrid Limited also uses cameras to create a 360-degree overhead view of the vehicle.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

In addition, the Tucson Hybrid Limited is equipped with a complete suite of advanced driver-safety aids, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision-avoidance assist, lane-keep and lane-following assist, rear-cross-traffic-collision avoidance, and parking-collision-avoidance assist.

It's also equipped with remote smart-parking assist, or as they called it in the commercial, " Smaht Pahk ," which can pull a vehicle into and out of a parking space with the driver outside the car.

The Tucson Hybrid is powered by a 1.6 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine working in unison with an electric-drive motor.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

The Tucson Hybrid's 1.6-liter engine produces 180 horsepower, while the electric motor is rated for 59 horsepower. The total output is 226 horsepower and is mated to a traditional six-speed automatic transmission.

The Tucson Hybrid is equipped with a 1.49 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

The plug-in-hybrid version comes with a more powerful 90-horsepower electric-drive motor, a larger 13.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and an onboard charging port.

The internal-combustion-only version of the Tucson is powered by a 187-horsepower 2.5-liter normally aspirated four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

This Tucson comes with front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive as an option.

So what's it like to drive?

hyundai tucson travel 2021

The Tucson Hybrid doesn't drive like a hybrid. Much of that can be attributed to Hyundai's decision to go with a traditional six-speed automatic transmission instead of an E-CVT gearbox, found in rivals such as the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Ford Escape Hybrid.

As a result, the Tucson Hybrid feels virtually identical to a traditional vehicle, while the RAV4 and Escape hybrids feel more akin to a pure battery electric vehicle .

Under hard acceleration, the Tucson Hybrid takes a split second before the power kicks in like a traditional vehicle, unlike other hybrids where you feel the instantaneous torque of the electric motor before the internal-combustion engine takes over.

According to MotorTrend , the 2024 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid can reach 60 mph from a standstill in a respectable 7.8 seconds.

I have only two real gripes with the driving experience.

Even though the 1.6-liter engine delivers strong and smooth power when called upon, the intrusive, high-pitched noise it makes under hard acceleration can be jarring. In addition, the six-speed transmission has a tendency to hesitate during low-speed driving, leading to abrupt gear changes. Both take away from the Tucson's generally refined driving experience.

Overall, the Tucson Hybrid delivered solid acceleration and sure-footed handling with a quiet and comfortable ride.

The SUV had impressive fuel economy for a 3,800-pound all-wheel-drive SUV.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

The Tucson Hybrid Limited boasts Environmental Protection Agency fuel-economy figures of 37 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 37 mpg in combined driving.

The Tucson Hybrid isn't as efficient as the RAV4 Hybrid. However, the RAV4 doesn't have a true mechanical all-wheel drive like the Tucson. Instead, it uses 149-horsepower electric motor to power the rear wheels to create a virtual all-wheel drive.

During my time with the Tucson Hybrid, I fell a few mpg short of the EPA fuel-economy ratings. However, my numbers were negatively affected by more aggressive than normal throttle application and extended periods of idling.

For comparison, the internal-combustion-only Tucson with AWD is rated for 23 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined.

The Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Limited is equipped with a touchscreen infotainment system.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

The 10.25-inch screen is standard on higher-trim levels, but lower trim levels get an 8-inch touchscreen.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on all models. However, only vehicles with the smaller screen get wireless CarPlay and Android Auto.

The rear seats are trimmed in soft leather and heated.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

Occupants in the roomy rear cabin get an impressive 41.3 inches of legroom, which is on par with the Honda CR-V and beats the RAV4 by 3.5 inches.

The rear-seat passengers are also treated to dedicated air vents and USB-A plugs.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

The Tucson Hybrid Limited is equipped with a smart power liftgate.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

The liftgate triggers if you stand within 3 feet of the rear bumper for more than three seconds while possessing the key fob. This is a departure from rival systems that require the driver to swing their leg under the back bumper.

Open the liftgate, and you'll find 38.7 cubic feet of cargo room behind the rear seats.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

There's no spare tire. Instead, there's a tire-repair kit in the underfloor storage area where the spare wheel would have been.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

With the rear seats folded, the Tucson Hybrid boasts 74.5 cubic feet of cargo space.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

It's not perfect: The drivetrain needs further refinement, and it could use improved quality for its interior material.

hyundai tucson travel 2021

With that said, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Korean hybrid.

The Tucson Hybrid is a great choice for someone who wants the performance and feel of a pure internal-combustion vehicle but the efficiency of a hybrid.

This is something few vehicles can deliver these days.

Understand [ edit ]

This area where the East European Plain touches the Black Sea has seen habitation by civilizations stretching back to Scythian, Roman, Greek, and Ottoman times. In the 18th century, the Russian Empire started to lay a foothold by establishing outposts on this frontier, but then eventually with expansion of the empire it became more of a commerce center due to its premier trade location where the Black Sea meets the Don River. And it saw industrialization, too, causing it to draw people and become one of the largest Russian cities for a time. But it was not without adversity that it passed through the ages, as it saw incursions from the Russian Civil War, cholera epidemics, and occupation by the Germans during the Great World Wars. One of its darker moments was the execution of 30,000 Russian Jews by occupying Nazi forces at Zmievskaya Balka.

But today it is a peaceful metropolis full of green esplanades and theaters and cafes.
