  • Only a Northern Song - recorded during the Sgt. Pepper sessions but held for the 1968 "Yellow Submarine" soundtrack album (about which more below).
  • It's All Too Much - recorded in May and June 1967 but held for the "Yellow Submarine" soundtrack.
  • All Together Now - recorded in May 1967 but held for the "Yellow Submarine" soundtrack.
  • Magical Mystery Tour  - film version, which includes somewhat different vocals and John's spoken, "When a man buys a ticket for a magical mystery tour..." section.
  • The Fool on the Hill - Demo version, part of which was included on Anthology 2 .
  • All You Need is Love - TV broadcast version
  • Aerial Tour Instrumental - a variation on "Flying," which has appeared on numerous bootlegs.
  • Shirley's Wild Accordion - a Lennon-McCartney credited instrumental featured in the MMT film. The music is performed by Shirley Evans on accordion; her husband, Reg Wale, on percussion; Paul McCartney on maracas and Ringo Starr on drums. A version of the tune appears as a bonus on the 2012 MMT DVD/Blu-ray.
  • Mellotron music - various musical cues created for the MMT film, which also are available on bootlegs.
  • Jesse's Dream - instrumental music from this sequence of the MMT film.
  • Christmas Time (is Here Again) - full version of the tune used in bits and pieces on the band's 1967 Christmas fan club record and excerpted on the 1995 "Free as a Bird" single.
  • Carnival of Light - the never-bootlegged studio freakout recorded as Paul's contribution to the Million Volt Light and Sound Rave, held in London in early 1967. I felt that this really should've been included in the Pepper box since it was recorded during sessions for that LP. But MMT is a compilation album of 1967 recordings, so why not include it here?
  • All Together on the Wireless Machine - Maybe as a hidden cut. This is a short ditty used as a jingle for BBC Radio's "Where It's At" program hosted by Kenny Everett and Chris Demming. It reportedly features Paul on vocals and piano (and it sounds like Paul to me), but that's the topic of some debate. At any rate, it seems like the Beatles camp would know whether it's Paul or not and, if so, include it here.
  • BBC"Where It's At" broadcast from May 20 featuring John and Paul discussing Sgt. Pepper . Should've been on the Pepper box, but let's include it here.
  • BBC Kenny Everett interview with Paul about the "All You Need is Love" TV broadcast.
  • BBC "Where It's At" broadcast from Nov. 25 featuring John discussing MMT .

The Beatles / Magical Mystery Tour Special Boxed Deluxe Edition

By Paul Sinclair

The Beatles / Magical Mystery Tour Special Boxed Set

As previously revealed on this blog, The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour  film is coming Blu-ray (and DVD) on 8 October (worldwide) and 9 October in North America – the news is now official.

Even better news is that as well as standard releases on DVD and Blu-ray, a special, boxed deluxe edition will also be available with the following contents:

  • • Set housed in a 10″x10″ box
  • • Both DVD and Blu-ray included
  • • 60-page book with background information, photographs and documentation from the production,
  • • A faithful reproduction of the mono double 7″ vinyl EP of the film’s six new Beatles songs, originally issued in the UK to complement the film’s 1967 release!

This sounds superb, and the set is currently retailing for £59.99 on Apple’s online store .

The film has been fully restored by Paul Rutan Jr. of Eque Inc., the same company that handled the much acclaimed restoration of Yellow Submarine . The soundtrack has been remixed into 5.1 surround! This work was done at Abbey Road Studios by Giles Martin and Sam Okell. This means DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 for the Blu-ray!

SPECIAL FEATURES: All of the packages contain a host of special features, packed with unseen footage. There are newly-filmed interviews with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and other members of the film’s cast and crew, as well as a director’s audio commentary recorded by Paul.

Director’s Commentary – by Paul McCartney

The Making of Magical Mystery Tour (19m 05s)

– Features interviews with Paul and Ringo, along with other cast members and crew. Includes unseen footage.

Ringo the actor (2m 30s)

– Ringo reflecting on his role in the film.

Meet The Supporting Cast (11m 27s)

– A feature on the background and careers of Nat Jackley, Jessie Robins, Ivor Cutler, The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, Victor Spinetti, George Claydon, and Derek Royle.

“Your Mother Should Know” (2m 35s)

“Blue Jay Way” (3m 53s)

“The Fool On The Hill” (3m 05s)

– Three new edits of these performances all featuring footage not seen in the original film.

“Hello Goodbye” (3m 24s), as featured in Top of the Pops 1967

– The Beatles allowed the BBC to film them in the edit suite where they were working on Magical Mystery Tour. This was then turned into a promo by the BBC, who shot their own additional footage. It was then broadcast on Top of the Pops to mark the “Hello Goodbye” single going to No 1 in December 1967.

Nat’s Dream (2m 50s)

– A scene directed by John featuring Nat Jackley and not included in the original film.

Ivor Cutler – “I’m Going In A Field” (2m 35s)

– Ivor performs “I’m Going In A Field”, in a field. This scene was not included in the original film.

Traffic – “Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush” (1m 53s)

– The filming of Traffic acting out their 1967 hit single “Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush” was commissioned by The Beatles for possible inclusion in Magical Mystery Tour but was not used in the final edit.

This is currently available on the Amazon.co.uk website for a very respectable £29.99, this is the cheapest of any UK retailer by some way, so for those interested i’d jump on that price pretty quickly before it jumps up again.

richard

nice one…..purchased.

[…] Magical Mystery Tour Blu-ray is out in a month, but in the meantime let’s enjoy a live rendition of The Beatle‘s third number one (and a healthy dose of Beatlemania). She Loves You hit the top spot in the UK on this day 49 years ago. It stayed ‘toppermost of the poppermost’ for six weeks. […]

Justin

It’s the vinyl in these sets that I’m not interested in. I realise there may be some retro ‘they sound the best’ movement happening, but I (and a lot of people) haven’t had a turntable for 20 years. If anything should get a seperate release for a niche market, it should be the vinyl. I’ll just take a Blu-ray or Blu-ray/DVD combo, thanks.

Also, on the subject of the BD/DVD combo, I’m a fan. I do have blu-ray players in two rooms for adults/kids viewing. With movies like the recent release of ‘The Avengers’, I can keep the pristine BD for me and the kids (who don’t care about bit rates!) can watch the DVD in the other room til it’s destroyed, and it’s not a big deal. For a few extra bucks, I like the option.

James

I’ll weigh in for a second as well. I personally love combo packs. I think they are a great idea for the exact reasons previously explained. I have one Blu-ray player in one room. But when you add other rooms, laptops, and portable players, I have about 6 DVD players. I don’t want to buy the same thing twice. Getting both formats in one shot is perfect and makes complete economical sense from the perspective of both the manufacturers and the consumer. In Canada, the average DVD is about $20 and the average Blu-ray is about $24. But a combo is around $28. So, for an extra $4.00, I get both formats. I personally don’t think there should be DVD alone releases and Blu-ray alone releases. I think all should be combos. The fact that The Beatles offer both is absolutely perfect and certainly the way to go. I hope others take notice. And that goes beyond Mr. Gabriel. In U2’s recent box they released it as DVD only and then released the documentary as a standalone Blu-ray later on. Why? Include them both in the box and add $5.00. Then release the standalones for those who won’t shell out for the box. You actually make more money that way (I’m assuming most people are like me and bought the box but refused to buy the same thing later on Blu-ray).

Paul Kent

Paul – the “hypocritical” line was in reference to myself, not you. I’ve bleated on here about the duplication of So on CD and vinyl and the Athens gig on CD and DVD, so I had to mention it in regard to this release. Having said that, and given your response, I now bow down to both yours and Greg’s superior logic, ha ha! I see what you mean now, as far as this release is concerned. Still doesn’t explain why movies are released in combo packs, though

ChristopherM

Movies are released in combo packs for several reasons:

1) People with Blu-ray players in their living room may still have DVD players in other rooms (eg bedrooms), not to mention portable players etc. They appreciate the extra format.

2) Combo packs offer a level of future-proofing – and hence incentive – to customers who have not yet switched to Blu-Ray (more people than the industry might care to admit to)

3) Combo packs are actually cheaper for publishers and distributors, especially those in niche markets. After the Sony warehouse fire, the Masters of Cinema label switched to combo packaging because of the previous expense of carrying separate DVD and Blu-ray lines.

magical mystery tour super deluxe

Well explained, Chris. Thank you!

I know that, Greg, but it’s not an answer, is it? I don’t get the concept of releasing any movie in DVD/blu-ray combos. Maybe it’s just me, but I only need my movies in one format, thanks! :)

greg

To paul the answer to your question is simple. Go into any dvd store and you will find bluray packages with both bluray and dvd in the same package . It is very common. It is a very nice box. Getting it will be all dependent on price for me.

Hmmm… bit hypocritical, following So-gate, to not dwell on the duplication here. Really, what is the point of including the DVD and the blu-ray? Pointless and, like the So box, back-filling with a useless extra. Sorry, don’t get it!

Don’t think so Paul. For a start it was more of a news article rather than any kind of in-depth analysis, but putting that to one side, one of the criticisms about “So” was no Blu-ray, and therefore no hi-res audio and no hi-def pictures. I think in the ‘rip-off’ article I actually say, why couldn’t they have gone the ‘movie’ route with a triple play scenario DVD+Blu-ray+digital. I also point out that is what Pink Floyd did successfully with their “Dark Side of the Moon” immersion box (ie provide DVD+Blu-ray).

It’s the right decision to provide both because they are covering “the best available” with Blu-ray, and the mass market with DVD. No one is left disappointed. If they’d just offered DVD then we’d all be complaining how we ‘have’ to buy the box and the individual Blu-ray. If they just offered Blu-ray, loads of people that don’t own Blu-ray players would be pissed off.

A Deluxe Edition that includes both the DVD and the Blu-ray?!? What a novel idea. Sorry, but I’m still on the Gabriel Bitter Bus. But The Beatles will take me away from this on a bus of their own. Great News! There were rumours that “Yellow Submarine”, “Magical Mystery Tour”, and “Let It Be” would be released on Blu-ray by the end of 2013. Well, 2 of the 3 prove to be correct. Fingers-crossed for a release of the granddaddy of all Beatles films.

Magical Mystery Tour

By Scott Plagenhoef

September 9, 2009

After the death of manager Brian Epstein, the Beatles took a series of rather poor turns, the first of which was the Magical Mystery Tour film. Conceived as a low-key art project, the Beatles were oddly nonchalant about the challenges of putting together a movie. They'd assembled records, they'd worked on A Hard Day's Night and Help! -- how hard could it be? Without Epstein to advise, however, things like budgeting and time management became a challenge, and this understated experimental film turned into a sapping distraction.

Musically, however, the accompanying EP was an overwhelming success. The EP format apparently freed the band to experiment a bit, not having to fill sides of a 45 with pop songs or make the grand statements of an album. The title track is a rousing set piece, meant to introduce the travelogue concept of the film. The remaining four songs released exclusive to the EP are low-key marvels-- Paul McCartney's graceful "The Fool on the Hill" and music-hall throwback "Your Mother Should Know", George Harrison's droning "Blue Jay Way", and the percolating instrumental "Flying". Few of them are anyone's all-time favorite Beatles songs, only one had a prayer of being played on the radio, and yet this run seems to achieve a majesty in part because of that: It's a rare stretch of amazing Beatles music that can seem like a private obsession rather than a permanent part of our shared culture.

As a more laid-back release, the EP suggested the direction the band might have taken on the White Album had it remained a full band, happy to shed the outsized conceptualism and big statements and craft atmospheric, evocative pieces. In the U.S., the EP was paired with three recent double-sided singles, ballooning Magical Mystery Tour into an album-- the only instance in which a U.S. release, often mangled by Capitol, became Beatles canon. With only the EP's title track married specifically to the film's themes, the overall effect of a title track/album sleeve as shell game was in line with Sgt. Pepper ' s Lonely Hearts Club Band .

Of the three singles, the undisputed highlight is "Strawberry Fields Forever"/ "Penny Lane", John Lennon and Paul McCartney's tributes to their hometown, Liverpool. Slyly surreal, assisted by studio experimentation but not in debt to it, full of brass, harmonium, and strings, unmistakably English-- when critics call eccentric or baroque UK pop bands "Beatlesesque," this is the closest there is to a root for that adjective. There is no definitive Beatles sound, of course, but with a band that now functions as much as a common, multi-generational language as a group of musicians, it's no surprise that songs rooted in childhood-- the one experience most likely to seem shared and have common touchpoints-- are among their most universally beloved.

The rest of the singles collected here are no less familiar: Lennon's "All You Need Is Love" was initially completed up for an international TV special on BBC1-- its basic message was meant to translate to any language. Harrison's guitar solo, producer George Martin's strings, and the parade of intertextual musical references that start and close the piece elevate it above hippie hymn. Its flipside, "Baby You're a Rich Man", is less successful, a second-rate take on John Lennon's money-isn't-everything theme from the considerably stronger "And Your Bird Can Sing". It's the one lesser moment on an otherwise massively rewarding compilation.

Much better from Lennon is "I Am the Walrus", crafted for the Magical Mystery Tour film and EP but also released as a double-sided single with McCartney's "Hello Goodbye". One of Lennon's signature songs, "Walrus" channels the singer's longtime fascinations with Lewis Carroll, puns and turns of phrase, and non sequiturs. "Hello Goodbye" echoes the same contradictory logic found in the verses of "All You Need Is Love", a vague sense of disorientation that still does little to balance its relentlessly upbeat tone. McCartney excelled at selling simplistic lyrics that risk seeming cloying, though, and he again does here-- plus, the kaleidoscopic, carnival-ride melody and interplay between lead and backing vocals ensure it's a much better record than it is a song.

In almost every instance on those singles, the Beatles are either whimsical or borderline simplistic, releasing songs that don't seem sophisticated or heavy or monumental (even though most of them are). In that sense, they're all like "All You Need Is Love" or childhood memories or Lewis Carroll-- easy to love, fit for all ages, rich in multi-textual details, deceptively trippy (see Paul's "Penny Lane" in particular, with images of it raining despite blue skies, or the songs here that revel in contradictions-- "Hello Goodbye"'s title, the verses in "All You Need Is Love"). More than any other place in the band's catalogue, this is where the group seems to crack open a unique world, and for many young kids then and since this was their introduction to music as imagination, or adventure. The rest of the Magical Mystery Tour LP is the opposite of the middle four tracks on the EP-- songs so universal that, like "Yellow Submarine", they are practically implanted in your brain from birth. Seemingly innocent, completely soaked through with humor and fantasy, Magical Mystery Tour slots in my mind almost closer to the original Willy Wonka or The Wizard of Oz as it does other Beatles records or even other music-- timeless entertainment crafted with a childlike curiosity and appeal but filled with wit and wonder.

On the whole, Magical Mystery Tour is quietly one of the most rewarding listens in the Beatles' career. True, it doesn't represent some sort of forward momentum or clear new idea-- largely in part because it wasn't conceived as an album. The accompanying pieces on the EP are anomalies in the Beatles oeuvre but they aren't statements per se, or indications that the group is in any sort of transition. But if there was ever a moment in the Beatles' lifetime that listeners would have been happy to have the group just settle in and release songs as soon as possible, it was just before and after the then-interminable 10-month gap between the Revolver and *Sgt. Pepper'* s . Without that context, the results could seem slight-- a sort-of canonized version of Past Masters perhaps-- but whether it's an album, a collection of separate pieces, or whatnot matters little when the music itself is so incredible.

Beatles Magical Mystery Tour Glows in Blu-Ray

Up for some Beatles? Mark Smotroff looks at two Beatles releases available on Blu-Ray

Finally. The Beatles are preserving their legacy for future generations.    It began with the release of a restored Yellow Submarine this year…. and Paul McCartney’s stellar solo album box sets last year.

AR-BeatlesLOVElarge.jpg

All that is missing is a nice rainbow-colored vinyl 180-gram LP version of the US issue (in mono, of course).   Perhaps we’ll get lucky   when the new mono Beatle LP remasters come out in 2013.    And hopefully before I die The Beatles will see it fit to put out a comprehensive Blu-ray collection of all of their promotional films in complete form, in 5.1 surround and high definition audio and video (not the snippets shown on the Anthology box set).   Until then, MMT on Blu-ray is now the best way to see – and hear – this period of The Beatles’ work.

One Reply to “Beatles Magical Mystery Tour Glows in Blu-Ray”

Am I reading this right to hear that the studio album isn’t mixed for Blu-ray in high res? 24/96 or 24/192? Just the motion picture and the soundtrack?
