Nile Cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan

Nile cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan have been meticulously planned and structured specifically for people who want to fully immerse themselves in Ancient Egypt’s fascinating history. Most Nile River cruises sail from Luxor to Aswan and from Aswan to Luxor, which unfortunately means that most Nile cruise passengers never get to visit and explore the many ancient monuments that are located between Cairo and Luxor.

Boarding Your Nile Cruise in Cairo

When you arrive at Cairo International Airport, you will be met in person by your dedicated tour manager. Once you have passed through immigration, your tour manager will assist you in any way they can, and then they, along with one of our drivers, will escort you in a modern air-conditioned vehicle to the port area where you will board a luxury Nile River cruise ship .

After embarkation, passengers typically have the remainder of the day for themselves, unless stated otherwise in your chosen tour itinerary. This free time allows passengers to relax and familiarize themselves with the ship and its many amenities. A good 5-Star dinner is provided onboard the vessel in the evening, after which you can continue relaxing or head out into the city on your own.

On the second day of your cruise vacation, you will enjoy a visit to two fascinating attractions: the world-famous Egyptian Museum , and the iconic Giza Plateau where you will have time to explore the Great Pyramids of Giza and the massive Sphinx statue which are located on the outskirts of Cairo. Today’s sightseeing is broken into two, with the museum featured in the morning, and the pyramids featured in the afternoon, following lunch at a good local restaurant.

Once your sightseeing tour is over, you will be taken back to the cruise ship in time for dinner. Your cruise ship will remain in Cairo for the night, so guests are welcome to venture out on their own in the evening, or they can simply relax onboard.

Let the Nile Cruise Sailing Begin

As a general rule, cruise ships make an early morning departure from Cairo on the third day, and they spend the day sailing to Beni Suef, a journey which takes approximately 12 hours. This makes today a wonderful day for relaxing out on the water, while you are watching the world go by. By the time you arrive at Beni Suef, it will be too late for any sightseeing tours, so those only take place the next day, when you will be taken to see the wonderful Maydom Pyramid, and also the amazing Dahshour Pyramids.

Both these sites are only a short drive from Beni Suef, and both are definitely worth visiting. They are also good examples of ancient monuments which are not usually visited by people who book regular Nile River cruises that only run between Luxor and Aswan .

While cruise itineraries can and do vary from one specific cruise to another, all our Nile cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan dock at multiple destinations along the way.

After spending one or two nights on the ship at Beni Suef, cruise ships then continue on their way, stopping at stopping at numerous other places such as:

  • Tel El Amarna

If you have booked a Nile cruise from Cairo to Aswan, then the vessel you are on will continue on from Luxor, stopping at:

Nile cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan include significantly more sightseeing opportunities when compared to most other Nile River cruises, simply because most cruises only run between Luxor and Aswan.

As can be seen above, cruise ships generally only make two stops between Luxor and Aswan, while they can make six or more stops between Cairo and Luxor. However, it should also be noted that cruises from Luxor to Aswan and Aswan to Luxor include visits to some of Egypt’s most famous and most treasured ancient sites, including Valley of the Kings , Valley of Queens , and Philae Temple , to name only a few.

Nile Cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan – Top Attractions

As has been mentioned at the top of this page, you will enjoy visiting some of the Ancient World’s most iconic monuments, even before you set sail from Cairo, and once you leave Cairo, the sightseeing literally doesn’t stop until you disembark in Aswan. Below, you will find a list of the various places where these cruise ships stop, and what attractions you will be visiting during these places:

Your stop at Beni Suef typically includes two excursions, one to the Maydom Pyramid and one to the Dahshour pyramids. Located just a short distance from Beni Suef, is a site that is home to one large pyramid and several smaller mastabas. The large pyramid, also known as the Maydom Pyramid, is believed to be the second pyramid ever built in Egypt, and it was originally constructed for Pharaoh Huni who was the last pharaoh of the 3 rd dynasty.

Your second excursion will be to the Dahshour pyramids at an ancient royal necropolis which is also only a short drive from Beni Suef. The necropolis is best known for two particular pyramids, the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid, both of which are amongst the oldest and best-preserved pyramids in the country. Both were built during the reign of Pharaoh Sneferu who ruled between 2613 BC and 2589 BC.

While docked at Minya, you can expect to visit Tuna El Gebel and Ashmunein. Tuna El Gebel was the royal necropolis of Khmun. The area is home to several antiquities, including the treasured Boundary Stelae of Akhenaten. Because of this relic’s historical significance, it has since been enclosed with glass in order to try and prevent further erosion. The necropolis is also home to various other interesting sites, including the catacombs that were dug under the necropolis for the purpose of storing mummified falcons, baboons, and etc.

Your next excursion of the day will be to an area which is home to several tombs, including the Tomb of Baqet III, the Tomb of Khety, the Tomb of Amenemhet, and the Tomb of Khnumhotep II.

Tel El Amarna and Asyut

You won’t be staying at Tel El Amarna overnight, but you will enjoy an excursion to see a collection of ancient tombs known as the Northern Tombs. These include the tombs of Ahmose, Meryre, Pentu, Panehesy. After these tombs, you’ll visit the Royal Tomb of Akhenaten, the Great Palace of King Akhenaten, and finally the “Small” and “Great” temples of Aten.

After your sightseeing opportunities at Tel El Amarna, cruise ships continue on to Asyut, where they usually tie up for the night. Asyut is essentially just a stopover, and ships continue on their journey the following morning.

Sohag and El Balyana

The trip from Asyut to Sohag takes approximately 8 hours which means you get to enjoy another wonderfully relaxing day on the water. Nile cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan typically include an overnight stop at Sohag, and then they leave for El Balyana the following morning. The cruise to Balyana only takes a couple of hours, usually arriving shortly after breakfast.

If your chosen Nile cruise itinerary includes a stop at El Balyana, you will enjoy a visit to Abydos Temple , also known as the Temple of Seti. This is considered to be one of Egypt’s most important ancient sites, not least because of the fact that it had gained a cult-like status at one point in history. Sadly, not much remains of the actual city, other than the temple.

After this excursion, cruise ships continue on towards Qena, usually arriving in the late afternoon or early evening.

Your stop in Qena includes a visit to Dandarah Temple which is located only a short distance away from the area where the cruise ships dock. Rather than being a single temple, this site is a temple complex, and it is one of the best-preserved temple complexes of Ancient Egypt. There really is a lot to see at this site, and almost the entire site is accessible to visitors. In fact, visitors could once explore the entire site, including the crypts and the roof for example. However, the second stage of the roof, along with the highest part of the roof, has now been closed to tourists after a tourist fell to her death more than a decade ago.

Sightseeing at Luxor takes place over a period of two days. One day will be reserved for sightseeing on the East Bank where you will enjoy visiting places such as Luxor Temple and the sprawling Karnak Temple complex. Karnak in particular is one of the most popular and most visited ancient sites in the country.

What started off as a temple, later went on to become an entire city of temples, an undertaking which lasted for more than 2,000 years. Today, most of the city lies in ruins, but there is still so much to see. In fact, some solo travelers revisit the site several times during their stay in Luxor .

Your second day in Luxor will see you visiting the West Bank, where you will enjoy visiting more of Egypt’s most treasured sites, including Valley of the Kings and the mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut . Queen Hatshepsut’s temple was dedicated to the sun god Amun, and it was once also known as Holy of Holies. This impressive shrine was painstakingly carved out of the cliffs on the west bank of the Nile. It is fair to say that this must be one of the most striking and most fascinating ancient temples ever discovered.

Valley of the Kings features in all our Nile cruise itineraries because it is one of many sites which nearly all visitors long to see. It is a sprawling ancient necropolis where archeologists have uncovered more than 60 royal tombs, including the tomb of King Tutankhamen .

Nile Cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan will make sure you get to explore all the top attractions in Luxor.

All cruises heading to or from Aswan will stop at Edfu. Some cruises include an overnight stay, while others only stop long enough to allow for a tour to Edfu Temple . This temple lay buried beneath the desert sands for more than 2,000 years, and as a result, it is one of the country’s best-preserved ancient temples, and one which is definitely well worth seeing.

At Kom Ombo, passengers will be taken to see the wonderful Kom Ombo Temple which was dedicated to two gods, Horus the falcon-headed god, and Sobek the crocodile god. What makes this temple so incredibly fascinating is the fact that it is essentially a twin temple complex, with one being a mirror image of the other. Other than this, they were built identically in every way so as not to offend either of the two gods to which they were dedicated.

Our Nile cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan terminate at Aswan, but nonetheless, you will still get to enjoy some sightseeing while you are here. Enjoy a wonderful outing that will see you visiting places such as the spectacular Aswan High Dam , Philae Temple , and the Colossi of Memnon . Philae Temple is particularly fascinating, and it features in virtually all good quality Nile River cruise itineraries.

You will experience the highlights of Aswan with our amazing Nile Cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan.

Some cruise packages will also include one or more other attractions in and around Aswan. Also, it is quite often possible for passengers to book an optional tour to the famous Abu Simbel temples while they are in Aswan. Finally, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight back to Cairo where you will be met by one of our tour managers who will then escort you to international departures for your flight back home.

Board and Lodging

All our Nile cruises from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan focus on luxury and comfort. If your chosen tour itinerary includes one or more nights in a hotel, you can be sure that you will be staying only in the very best luxury hotels. However, most board and lodging will be onboard whichever cruise ship features in your chosen itinerary.

Once you embark for your Nile Cruise from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan, will enjoy full board and lodging for the duration of your cruise. The cruise ships that feature in our tours are all luxuriously furnished and beautifully decorated in order to ensure that all passengers enjoy a true 5-Star experience across all services and amenities. 9 Days Nile Jewel (Cairo, Cruise, Hurghada) Superior hotels

The tour was fantastic, covering Cairo, a Nile cruise, and Hurghada. As a beginner diver, Hurghada was the highlight for me. Despite traveling during Ramadan, it was pleasant with fewer crowds at tourist sites. The success of the tour was greatly attributed to the exceptional organization by the entire team, especially Bassem our wonderful tour guide.

I started out pretty nervous but everything promised in the description of our Egypt adventure was delivered. From the TourRadar rep meeting us at the Cairo airport and getting us to the hotel. There was support throughout the 9 days. Our group guide Raemon was excellent. He tended to all the requests and special needs that came up with patience and kindness. Our Egypt experience exceeded our imagination. The schedule is full and sometimes hectic but absolutely worth it.

This was without a doubt an absolutely perfect experience. The guide Anas could not have been more gracious, informative and knowledgeable. All of the stops were stunning and the pleasant shoreline views along the way made the whole experience exciting and charming. The meals were fantastic and everyone aboard was there to help. The day tours were exactly as described and some surprisingly fun activities on the boat only enhanced the experience. I highly recommend taking this cruise package.

A must see destination! and the best part was it wasn't crowded at all. My guide Ahmed was one of the best guides i've ever had on any tour. He truly became a friend at the end of this adventure. Also had a great taste in music and shared some of his local favorites! Be sure to go to Abu Simbel - you will regret not going to see it! the group was great! Ahmed really gave us the keys to the country giving us every opportunity to maximize our local interaction. Hotels were great and transportation was efficient. Highlight was definitely the flucca ride up the Nile!!! sleeping under the stars was an unforgettable experience.

King Ramses - 13 days Tour

King Ramses - 13 days

Our family of four had an incredible time on the King Ramses II Egypt tour. It was so special to experience Egypt as a part of a well organised, fun, and educational tour with On The Go, especially with our talented and knowledgeable guide MoMo. As an Egyptologist, MoMo took us through the beautiful historical sites of Egypt with passion and a depth of knowledge, teaching us so much about each site while making the entire trip a fun and exciting experience. We loved every second of this tour, and were really impressed with the balance of historical and local Egypt, and the quality and organisation of transport and accommodation. Our guide MoMo really made our tour special, bringing together the whole group with his knowledge of Egypt, always happy to answer any questions and help out in any way he can. He truly welcomed us to Egypt as a family and we were so lucky to have a guide with such passion for his work and that displayed kindness and understanding to each and every one of us. We cannot recommend visiting Egypt enough, especially with On The Go tours. I’m sure that you too will experience a once in a lifetime trip, where MoMo and On The Go will be sure to introduce you to their culturally and historically rich country.

Kingdom of Egypt - 8 Days ( Cairo , Aswan - Nile Cruise - Luxor ) & Sleeper Train Round Trip

This was a really fun trip for my family (2 kids ages 13 and 11). Our tour guides, especially “King Mina”, were very personable and knowledgeable. We learned so much about Egyptian history and I am inspired to learn more. There are several early mornings but it is well worth it. We had several hours cruising on the Nile one day which was a great chance to recuperate.

Nile cruise reviews, nile cruise faqs.

It’s best to visit Egypt anytime from September to May, a period when the climate tends to be milder, but Egypt can be visited year-round.

Can’t-miss sites in Egypt include The Great Pyramids of Giza; the magnificent royal tombs of the Valley of the Kings; the Pharaonic temples of the Nile; and Karnak and Luxor, the largest open-air museum in the world. A Nile cruise offers historic sites such as Aswan and Abu Simbel, an experience best bookended with time in Cairo to explore the city’s museums, Khan el-Khalili bazaar and diverse neighborhoods.

A four-night cruise affords enough time to see the Nile’s major highlights including the temples of Luxor and Abu Simbel, while a more leisurely paced seven-night cruise reveals a wealth of additional less-frequented sites, such as Dra Abu Nag and the magnificent Medinet Habu, built by Ramses III.

Yes, visitors are allowed into select interior chambers of one of Giza’s three most iconic pyramids. The Giza Pyramid Complex (or Giza Necropolis) also comprises some ancillary pyramid complexes and the Great Sphinx of Giza.

Aswan and Abu Simbel are can’t-miss sites in Upper Egypt. Fronting the Nile, Aswan boast a wealth of monumental treasures, including the Philae temple complex, the Temple of Isis and the Temple of Khnum. Located southwest of Aswan, the small Nubian village of Abu Simbel is renowned for its two massive rock-cut temples, both built during the reign of King Ramses II (1200 BC).

Egyptologists are experts who study the language, history and culture of ancient Egypt, a period dating back to 7,000 BC. Their skillsets span humanities disciplines such as literary theory to hard sciences, including the physics of radiocarbon dating. Leading every journey to Egypt, all of JtE Guides and Resident Tour Directors are also trained Egyptologists, revealing privileged insights every step of the way.

Yes, a tourist visa is required for U.S. and Canadian passport holders for entry into Egypt. JtE recommends an electronic visa (eVisa). To apply online, visit visa2egypt.gov.eg/eVisa/Home.

From Cairo to Luxor: 6 Best Ways to Get There

Written by Jess Lee Updated Jul 13, 2022 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Home to some of the country's most famous sights including the colorful tombs of the Valley of The Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut, and the colossal Temples of Karnak, Luxor is top of most people's hit list when it comes to Egypt travel itineraries.

It's no surprise then that many visitors head straight to this world-famous historic site, once the power-center of the Middle Kingdom pharaohs, after their time spent exploring Cairo .

Fortunately several options for getting from Cairo to Luxor are available for travelers.

On This Page:

  • From Cairo to Luxor by Train
  • From Cairo to Luxor by Sleeper Train
  • From Cairo to Luxor by Nile Cruise
  • From Cairo to Luxor by Airplane
  • From Cairo to Luxor by Flight Day Tour
  • From Cairo to Luxor by Bus

1. From Cairo to Luxor by Train

Medinat Habu Temple on Luxor's west bank

Several trains run daily between Cairo's Ramses Train Station and Luxor Railway Station from 8am to 11pm. If you're staying at a hotel in Giza, you can also board all the same services to Luxor at Giza Railway Station.

There are two train types: The "Special" class trains (five services daily) have newer rolling stock and more comfortable carriages.

The "Spanish" class trains (four services daily) are cheaper and older.

All trains offer a drink and food trolley service that rattles through the carriages intermittently throughout the journey, but it's a good idea to bring along snacks and a picnic meal.

The first class carriages in both come with roomier seats and better bathroom facilities, so are well worth shelling out for. First class tickets range from 151EGP (US$9.60) to 255EGP (US$16.30) depending on the train.

Travel time between Cairo and Luxor is supposed to be around 10.5 hours but is more typically around 12.

You definitely want to try and bag a window seat, as one of the great joys of train travel along this route is watching the lush Nile-side countryside of green fields and date palms passing by. Take one of the two morning trains to make the most of the view.

If you're planning to travel on one of the overnight services, note that both types of trains are seater only. There are no sleeper carriages.

This is the most popular method of public transport to Luxor for Egyptians, as well as foreign visitors, so try to book train tickets at least a few days in advance.

The major downside of train travel along this route is that unfortunately, some staff at both Ramses Train Station and Luxor Railway Station will attempt to refuse foreign travelers tickets on these trains and will tell you that you are only allowed to use the (much more expensive) sleeper service. This dates from a previous official travel restriction, which has since been revoked by the government.

If you are having trouble booking a train ticket, most hotels can send someone to the station to do it for you for a small fee. You can also now book online tickets on the Egyptian National Railways website .

2. From Cairo to Luxor by Sleeper Train

Row of ancient sculptures of criosphinx in Karnak Temple, Luxor

The Watania Sleeper Train is a slice of old-fashioned rail travel .

It departs every evening from Ramses Train Station in Cairo at 7.45pm (and 20 minutes later at Giza Station) and travels overnight to arrive in Luxor at 6.15am.

Tickets can be purchased from the Watania Sleeper Train office at Ramses Train Station, or you can book online .

It's best to book a few days in advance. It costs US$84 for a bed in a two-bed cabin or, if you're a solo traveler and don't want to share a compartment, US$126 for a single cabin. There is also a seater-only carriage with good-sized seats that can recline. A seater-only ticket costs US$42.

All tickets can only be booked using credit cards, US dollars or Euro. The ticket price includes both dinner (with a choice of chicken, beef, fish, or vegetarian) and breakfast.

The sleeper compartments are compact but tidy with a small washbasin and bunks that fold out from the wall. Bedding is provided, and the included meals are brought to you in-room.

Although tickets are rather expensive for the facilities provided, nothing can beat falling asleep on your bunk to the steady sway of the train tracks and waking up in the morning to the green fields of the Nile.

3. From Cairo to Luxor by Nile Cruise

Nile cruisers docked in front of Luxor Temple

The most luxurious way to travel from Cairo to Luxor is by Nile Cruiser.

Harking back to the early days of Egypt tourism, when European travelers first explored the country by boat, this slow cruise up the Nile River usually takes 12 days (including sightseeing days in both Cairo and Luxor while onboard).

This is a no-hassle and stylish sightseeing and transport all-in-one , stopping at all the important historic sites, such as Tell El Amarna and Abydos , along the way.

Only a few of the bigger Nile cruise operators, such as Mövenpick, operate this route, with sailings departing from Cairo once a month from February to June and September to November.

Prices, which include all meals and sightseeing tours as well as a range of on-board evening events, start from around US$700.

4. From Cairo to Luxor by Airplane

Hot air ballooning over Luxor's west bank

Egypt Air flies four times daily direct to Luxor International Airport from Cairo International Airport.

Flights take one hour, and ticket prices start at around US$145 in the high season from December to February. If you're traveling in low season, flight prices usually drop to around US$75.

Luxor flights depart from Cairo Airport's Terminal Three.

In minimal traffic conditions (before 7am and late at night) a taxi to Cairo Airport from the central city only takes around 30 minutes. At any other time of day, make sure to add in an hour for taxi transport time.

Luxor Airport is seven kilometers from central Luxor. There is no public transport into the center, so you need to either use one of the airport taxis or book a private transfer with your Luxor hotel.

5. From Cairo to Luxor by Flight Day Tour

Tomb interior in the Valley of the Kings

If you really have very little time up your sleeve, it is possible to take a day tour to Luxor from Cairo by flying there and back in one day.

If you want to do this, prepare for a very long day of between 12 and 15 hours door to door, and an early start. Most tours pick up from your Cairo hotel between 4am and 5am, and the return time to Cairo is around 7pm.

Also realize there is only so much you will be able to see of Luxor with just one day, so your sightseeing will be limited to the big-hitter sites: usually the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, and maybe Medinat Habu Temple on Luxor's west bank and Karnak Temple and/or Luxor Temple on the east bank.

These tours normally include a private driver, who transfers you to and from the airport in Cairo, and a professional Egyptologist guide and driver in Luxor, who accompanies you from Luxor Airport for the day.

The Private Day Tour of Luxor by Air offers a solid itinerary for this style of tour. The tour includes pickup and drop-off from your Cairo hotel to Cairo Airport, return flight costs to Luxor, the services of an Egyptologist guide and driver for the entire time you're in Luxor, and lunch. The tour visits the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut Temple for guided tours and includes a stop at the Statues of Memnon on the west bank, and guided tours of both Karnak and Luxor Temples on the east bank.

6. From Cairo to Luxor by Bus

Hatshepsut Temple on Luxor's west bank

Several bus companies run bus services between Cairo and Luxor.

The vast amount of services are overnight. Go Bus, Super Jet, and Upper Egypt Travel are the main companies operating this route.

Go Bus departs Cairo from their conveniently located office, just off Tahrir Square in the central city. Super Jet and Upper Egypt Travel buses leave from Cairo Gateway Bus Station, also in the central city.

All the bus companies arrive in Luxor at their individual offices, which are handily located in Luxor center, near the train station. Travel time is around 11 hours, and tickets cost between 195 EGP (US$12.45) and 430 EGP (US$27.45).

Buses stop every three hours or so for breaks at rather ramshackle highway service stations with bathrooms and restaurants. It's a good idea to bring plenty of snacks, though.

Note that even if you take a day service, you won't get many views on this route, as buses take the desert highway rather than following the Nile.

Egypt Travel Guide: Plan Your Perfect Trip

Everything You Need To Know Before Embarking On A Nile River Cruise

A Nile cruise is on nearly every international traveler’s wish list. The wonders of ancient Egypt go way beyond the pyramids and the sphinx, with countless treasures lying further south, a stretch away from Cairo, lying either within reach of Luxor or Aswan, which is why most people opt for a cruise between the two cities, stopping off at the most important sites along the way.

Having visited Cairo before, a Nile cruise had been on my wish list for years until I finally found the right ship, which I knew I would enjoy, together with the right duration of cruise and itinerary to suit me. It took a lot of research and some luck to chance upon the cruise that was right for me: very small, few people, historic connections, a touch of the glamor of 1920s- and 1930s-style travel, and plenty of class. I found my ideal cruise on the SS Sudan , the last true paddle steamer on the Nile, the one Agatha Christie sailed on and where she wrote Death on the Nile — and where the subsequent movies were filmed. Small enough to allow for privacy, large enough for comfort, with a five-night, six-day itinerary between Luxor and Aswan.

But what is perfect for me isn’t necessarily perfect for everybody else. Some might want a pool, a shop, more people to socialize with, or maybe more modern cabins, and probably going from Aswan to Luxor, or even cruising the whole way from Cairo to Aswan. Timing is crucial as well, as is deciding what to do at either end. There are many things to consider before embarking on a Nile cruise, so, here I have listed a few points to mull over and research before you book yourself that trip of a lifetime.

Up Or Down River?

Let’s start with some nomenclature you will need to go along the right route: Cruising up the Nile means you are going south, toward the source of the Nile, which, by the way, I recently discovered in Uganda. Cruising down the Nile is sailing toward the estuary in the Mediterranean. But, just to confuse things, Upper Egypt is in fact southern Egypt, while Lower Egypt is in the north, by the coast.

Most Nile Cruises, except for the ones setting off from Cairo and cruising all the way up the Nile, actually sail only in Upper Egypt, between Luxor and Aswan.

I am unsure about what the statistics are when it comes to preferences, but all the cruise ships in Upper Egypt either cruise from Luxor to Aswan or from Aswan to Luxor. Both Luxor and Aswan have airports you can fly into from Cairo, the main international airport in Egypt, so the choice really is yours. That said, personally, I felt that going from Luxor to Aswan was my preferred option simply because — in my mind — Aswan is so much prettier than Luxor. And from Aswan, you can travel to the temples in Abu Simbel, leaving you with the best bit at the end of your journey. But many people would argue the opposite and there really is no right or wrong.

Hotels At Either End

While many travelers, mostly those who are time poor, head straight from the airport to the cruise ship and, once docked after the cruise, fly straight back out again, I would like to plead for a night or two at either end. Not only does it give you the option of overcoming any jet lag or travel fatigue, but also there are some lovely historic hotels that are worth spending a night in. In Luxor, the famous Winter Palace is a historic hotel, a little frayed around the edges, but with a fabulous garden and a pedigree of former guests that is hard to beat. The only place that can beat the guest list of the Winter Palace is the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan where Agatha Christie stayed at the end of her cruise, and you can take a tour through numerous suites named after illustrious guests who stayed there over the last century. And the hotel offers rooms with some of my favorite views in the world .

What Kind Of Boat

There are essentially four types of boats on the Nile that can take you from A to B. There are modern cruise ships, relatively small when compared to ocean-going cruise ships with around 50 cabins, but many with swimming pools, cabins with balconies, and shops and restaurants on board. There is the SS Sudan , alone in its class, without amenities such as pools or shops, but with only five suites and 18 cabins, plus a superb sundeck, a bar, and a restaurant. Then there are the dahabiyas, beautiful boats with a sail at either end — and even more private with many only catering to around 12 passengers. The dahabiyas come without engines, but often have a tugboat for added speed, and offer the most tranquil and secluded cruises. Lastly, there are the feluccas, small sailboats, where in some cases you can spend one night on board, but generally, these lovely and traditional sailboats are only used for day trips.

Where Are The Stops?

Between the most popular cruise harbors of Luxor and Aswan lie the most amazing sights, most of which are taken in by all the various cruises, because, after all, that is why everybody is there. The main stops are Qena, a little downriver from Luxor, with the Dendera and Abydos temples; Luxor , with the various valleys of tombs; Edfu with the fabulous Kom Ombo temple; and lastly Aswan, with a visit to Philae. On a five-night cruise upriver (so going south), you will stay overnight in Qena, Luxor, Edfu, and two nights in Aswan.

Length Of Cruise

Most cruises between Luxor and Aswan take between three and seven days, the shorter ones skipping Qena and only staying one night in Aswan, the longer ones adding extra nights, usually in Luxor.

If you are lucky enough to have the time to sail from Cairo to Aswan , the itinerary takes a minimum of 11 nights, but more often than not 14 nights, with sightseeing in Cairo included, usually reaching Luxor on Day 11. Despite the current of the Nile, which is evident but quite slow, the cruises up or down the river take the same amount of time.

When Best To Travel

The best time to visit Upper (southern) Egypt is between October and April. That said, I went at the end of October, and the temperatures were still in the 90s Fahrenheit, making sightseeing a bit of an exhausting undertaking. In the summer, these temperatures are much, much worse, so travel then is best avoided. In December and January, the coldest months, the temperatures hover around the mid-70s Fahrenheit. As for rain, the rainy season is between October and April, with a negligible spike at less than an inch of rain in October.

What You Must Pack

Even if yours is a fancy cruise, pack light, pack layers, and pack sensible shoes. It will be hot and sandy whenever you go exploring. In the Valley of the Kings, for example, there is much sand, no shade, and plenty of stairs and steps to conquer, so light clothing but good shoes that keep you firmly on the ground are useful. Bring a light cover for the evening and something nice for the boat. A clothes brush to get the sand and dust off you at the end of the outing and a handheld fan to bring you some air when it gets warm are essential. And, if you like a tipple or two, know that in Egypt imported wine and champagne are extortionately expensive, so, get your full allowance in the duty-free shop and enjoy along the way.

What To Do Before (Or After)

Chances are that you will fly into Cairo, and unless you are embarking in Cairo, some sightseeing is a must. Allow at least two extra days to see the main sights before heading south. And once you are in the south, note that all cruise ships stop at Aswan because of the dams. If you want to see Abu Simbel, you can either fly from Aswan to Abu Simbel or take a tour either by bus or private car , but you will need to book the car in advance. This is because the tourist road caravan sets off first thing in the morning and is escorted by police all the way between Aswan and Abu Simbel because of potential bandits, and all travelers need to be registered and accounted for by the day before at the latest.

What To Read And Watch About The Nile

To get you in the mood and keep you going while you’re there, here are some books and films set in exactly the places you will be visiting, so you can go, “Oh, I know that place!” as you read or watch.

  • Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie
  • The films Death on the Nile from 1978 with Peter Ustinov , 2004 with David Suchet , and 2022 with Kenneth Branagh
  • Some very light but fun mysteries by Elizabeth Peters , with lots of places to be recognized
  • The superb old travel book by Amelia B. Edwards A Thousand Miles up the Nile , first published in 1877

One fantastic historical TV series presented by Bettany Hughes is entitled The Nile and is full of information, making for perfect viewing before and after your trip.

Pro Tip: In many places, you will either have to pay for a photography permit, or, at times, won’t be able to take photographs. But don’t let that stop you from carrying your camera everywhere with you!

How to plan the ultimate adventure in Egypt, from Cairo to the Red Sea

Feluccas drifting down the River Nile, ancient wonders found in dusty temples, warm waters filled with tropical fish: Egypt remains one of the world’s most atmospheric destinations.

With millennia-old pyramids, hallowed temples and intricately painted tombs worthy of an art gallery, Egypt has a mindboggling amount of history on show. Some of the first threads of human civilisation started here over 5,000 years ago, and Egyptians still call their country umm al dunya — mother of the world.

Egypt offers the opportunity to time-travel like few other places. The past seems to keep careful watch over the present. The Pyramids of Giza — the last survivor of the original seven wonders of the ancient world — overlook cacophonous Cairo , the third-largest metropolis in Africa and the biggest in the Middle East. South along the River Nile, a temple built more than 3,400 years ago stands in the centre of the modern city of Luxor, which was once ancient Thebes.

The Nile flows through the hearts of most of Egypt’s major cities. This blue-green ribbon keeps the ever-encroaching biscuit-coloured desert at bay, coaxing lush plant life amid the Saharan sands. Fly in a hot-air balloon over the west bank of Luxor to see just how abruptly the desert reasserts its dominance over riverbanks lined with date palms and green grasses. Or travel like royalty, following in the footsteps of legendary pharaohs and their armies and merchants, on a scenic multi-day cruise along the Nile, making the temples and tombs between riverside Luxor and Aswan easily accessible.

( A practical guide to travelling in Egypt. )

Egypt’s extensive pharaonic history takes centre stage for most travellers, but even more adventure awaits on a different waterfront, to the east along the Red Sea in the Sinai Peninsula. The three Abrahamic faiths — Christianity, Islam and Judaism — put great credence in stories said to have unfolded in the mountains of the Sinai. Most famously, Moses is supposed to have received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, and listened to God at the burning bush, where he was instructed to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.

These high peaks make a stunning backdrop for surfacing snorkellers and for scuba divers returning from explorations of the Red Sea. Beneath the water’s surface, a bountiful aquarium of sea turtles, sharks and neon-bright fish dart around flourishing coral reefs that sprout along the sea floor and scale the vertical walls. Witnessing the wildlife of the Red Sea is one of the world’s great underwater experiences, and pairing it with a Nile cruise allows travellers to experience the broad range of Egyptian adventures.

Sail boats navigating the calm waters in Aswan, Egypt. The sky is a dusky blue, and old style buildings can be feel in the far background.

Itinerary 1: The Nile Valley

Start point: Cairo End point: Abu Simbel Distance travelled: 725 miles Average length: 10 days

Herodotus, the 5th-century BCE Greek historian, famously called Egypt the ‘gift of the Nile’, but perhaps that description doesn’t go far enough. Egypt would be almost nothing without it. The river, the longest in the world, isn’t simply a watery artery stretching nearly 1,000 miles across the length of the country — it’s a genuine lifeline, and one of the world’s earliest civilisations wouldn’t have started here without its life-giving properties.

Ancient Egypt’s major temples and cities were located along the Nile’s fertile banks, called Kemet (‘the black land’) by its inhabitants. The fact that the river flows from south to north was key to the Egyptians’ worldview, with its focus on the daily journey of the sun between the horizons. The desert fringes on the Nile’s west bank — symbolically associated with the land of the dead — are where you’ll find most of the country’s tombs and pyramids. The ancient Egyptian idea of paradise, the ‘Field of Reeds’, was but a heavenly version of the real-life abundance of greenery along the Nile. Today, some 95% of Egyptians still live within a few miles of the water.

This itinerary, following the Nile’s course upriver on a boat cruise, has been travelled since the days of the pharaohs, and it remains the most popular way to explore Egypt, hitting all of the country’s major historic sites. To escape the crowds, slow down — linger longer in Luxor, dig deeper in Cairo and relax in Aswan. Egypt hides many more treasures beyond the Pyramids of Giza and the Valley of the Kings for travellers who take the time to seek them out.

Highlights along the Nile Valley

1. Cairo Dive into Egypt’s chaotic capital. The Pyramids of Giza are the stars of the show, and the nearby Grand Egyptian Museum will be a blockbuster when it finally opens. For now, marvel at the 20 royal mummies at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and find the gold death mask of Tutankhamun, housed in the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square until the GEM is ready.

Tourists visiting Luxor temple

2. Luxor Take the train (around 10 hours, daytime or sleeper) to Luxor, built atop the ancient capital of Thebes. Big-hitters at this UNESCO site include the Luxor Temple and religious complex of Karnak, and the tombs of pharaohs in the Valley of the Kings outside town. Other nearby sites include the Ramesseum, whose giant statues inspired the poem ‘Ozymandias’, and the temple of the female pharaoh Hatshepsut.

3. Edfu Board a cruise boat in Luxor and spend the best part of the day sailing the Nile, with scenes of desert dunes and a shoreline punctuated with date palms unspooling outside your cabin. The standard first stop 70 miles upriver is Edfu, a tiny town with a well-preserved temple.

4. Kom Ombo The Nile crocodile takes centre stage at Kom Ombo, another 40 miles or around five hours’ sailing from Edfu. Half of the unique ‘double’ temple is dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile-headed god of pharaonic power and fertility, and an intriguing museum of mummified crocodiles awaits at the end of your visit.

5. Aswan All cruises dock at Aswan, after two nights on board en route from Luxor. The Nile is at its most fascinating here. Take a felucca (small sailboat) to Gharb Soheil, a brightly painted village home to a few thousand Nubians, an Indigenous group that has lived in the region since pharaonic times. For sunset, have a drink on the terrace of the Old Cataract Hotel , made famous by Agatha Christie, who wrote part of Death on the Nile here.

6. Abu Simbel Abu Simbel sits on the shore of Lake Nasser, created by the construction of the Aswan High Dam in 1970. The temples were rescued from rising waters by moving them stone by stone to higher ground. Twice a year, the sun still illuminates the figure of Ramses II and two of the three gods in the temple’s inner sanctum.

Itinerary 2: The Red Sea & Sinai

Start point: Sharm el-Sheikh End point: Nuweiba Distance travelled: 250 miles Average length: 7 days

Egypt’s best-known body of water is a river, but the Red Sea that stretches along the country’s eastern coast guarantees some thrilling aquatic adventures of its own. Suitable for all levels of underwater explorers, from snorkellers to advanced scuba divers, the Red Sea is a technicolour dream world beneath its surface. There are a huge number of endemic fish — including species of elegant highlighter-yellow butterflyfish, neon parrotfish and shy clownfish lingering in finger-like anemones — and thriving coral reefs.

Sprawling resorts have taken up much Red Sea real estate around Sharm el-Sheikh, but the development and crowds thin out as you travel north. Just a few miles inland from the coast, Sinai’s interior reaches for the sky, a sacred land of pilgrimage and revelations still lived in by long-established Bedouin tribes. Hiking trails climb to mountain summits and wind through valleys carved with centuries of graffiti left by visitors from the Nabataeans (of Petra fame) to the Crusaders, leading to secret wild swimming pools and small waterfalls.

This itinerary hits Egypt’s superlative highs and lows — from the country’s loftiest peaks to its deepest dive sites — as it traces the eastern edge of Sinai and traverses the peninsula’s biblically connected mountains.

Highlights on the Red Sea and Sinai

1. Sharm el-Sheikh When you need a break from sun, sand and snorkelling, Sharm has a couple of worthy distractions. The Sharm el-Sheikh Museum — the only such collection on the peninsula — has a digestible assortment of artefacts that span Egypt’s history from the pharaohs to the Bedouin. At the heart of the Old Market, which, despite its name, is quite new, the Sahaba Mosque looks like it could have come from the drawing board of Gaudí, with spiralling brick columns and honeycombed minarets.

2. Ras Mohamed National Park At the southernmost tip of Sinai, Egypt’s first national park is blessed with incredible dive sites. Vertical reef walls have names that hint at the types of species scuba divers and snorkellers can see: Jackfish Alley, Eel Garden, Shark Observatory and Anemone City. Divers with advanced certifications can check the shockingly large concentration of shipwrecks and the contents that have spilled out on the sea floor. Sleep in a canvas tent on the beach within the park boundaries at Bedouin-owned Bedawi Eco Camping .

nile river cruise cairo to luxor

3. Dahab A chilled hangout spot for a curious mix of nomadic types — of both the digital and Bedouin varieties — Dahab is Egypt’s most laid-back destination. Whitewashed cafes draped with colourful Bedouin-style rugs line the crescent-shaped bays, where flippered snorkellers waddle past remote workers clacking away on laptops. North of town, the Blue Hole is infamous for its underwater tunnel, the Arch, which has seen a number of fatalities over the years; it is a safe and popular spot for responsible snorkelling and diving outside of that.

4. St Catherine Sacred to Christians, Jews and Muslims, the UNESCO-listed area around St Catherine’s contains the world’s oldest continuously lived-in Christian monastery, watched over by majestic mountains that are some of the tallest in the country. No matter your religious beliefs, join a night-time pilgrimage, arriving to witness sunrise from the summit of   Mt Sinai , or Jebel Musa (Mt Moses) in Arabic. Add on a day or more to walk with the local Jebeliya Bedouin through the neighbouring valleys that few outside visitors make time to see.

5. Nuweiba A small town with a laidback vibe and quiet golden beaches, one of Nuweiba’s main attractions is Dar Jan . A passion project by a couple who left the big smoke of Cairo, the nine-acre organic farm north of town is unlike elsewhere on the peninsula. Travellers can join creative workshops, including organic agriculture and outdoor survival skills, and spend artsy afternoons of pottery, meditation and mosaic-making. You can stay overnight, too.
