ras al khaimah cruise

Cruise port focus: Ras Al-Khaimah, UAE

Ras Al-Khaimah is the UAE’s northernmost emirate and the greenest in the country, thanks to its more frequent rainfall and soil that is fed by naturally occurring streams flowing beneath the mountains that divide the UAE from Oman.

ras-al-khaimah-fort

Cruise terminal : A new cruise terminal has just been built, featuring all the facilities and amenities required of the modern cruise tourist.

Shore excursions : The best shore excursions are those that go beyond the city into the mountains and down the beautiful coastline

Language : Arabic officially, but English widely spoken

Dress code : Shoulders and legs should be covered if visiting a mosque

Currency : The UAE dirham, but US dollar, British pound and euros all accepted in tourist areas

ras-al-khaimah

Ras Al-Khaimah, one of the smallest emirates in the UAE, is a window into the ancient history and terrain of Arabia, where centuries-old ruins offer clues into a nomadic way of life that has been all but eliminated by the explosive economic growth of the country.

It’s largest city, on the UAE’s Arabian Gulf coast, is also called Ras Al-Khaimah, and is a major local tourist destination, with tens of thousands of Dubai expats visiting for weekend getaways.

Its golden beaches framed by rugged mountains, has until now been untapped by the region’s fast-growing cruise industry.

That is expected to change from 2019, however, as the emirate takes a more direct approach to attracting cruise lines.

Development of the city’s first cruise terminal, a 1,000sqm terminal building that will stand on 860m of quay wall, is underway. The new terminal will enable multiple cruise ships to dock simultaneously.

Initially, it will be able to handle ships up to 214m in length and the creek and entry channel to the port has been dredged to 7.5m to accommodate larger cruise ship’s greater draft.

In coming years, this will be increased so that the largest cruise ships homeporting in the region, such as AIDAprima and MSC Bellissima, can also be accommodated.

The plans are intended to see Ras Al Khaimah transformed into a popular port of call on the Dubai cruise run.

The city has until now only been visited by smaller, boutique cruise ships, despite a booming tourism sector, with major investment underway.

AL JAZEERA AL HAMRA-ras-al-khaimah

The ancient remains of Sheeba’s Palace.

Several large beach resorts have opened, and there is an Iceland Waterpark and a traditional fisherman village in Al Jazirah Al Hamra, widely regarded to be the best-preserved example in the UAE.

Wadi Bih is one of the most stunning dry riverbeds in the whole of the UAE, and its tributary is home to the Jebel Al Jais Mountain Resort.

There are also the ancient remains of Sheeba’s Palace, a former resident of the Queen of Sheeba herself.

The cruise terminal in Ras Al-Khaimah

The new Ras Al Khaimah Cruise Terminal has been converted from the existing passenger ferry terminal, with new state-of-the-art security measures such as facial recognition CCTV, luggage and personal baggage X-Ray machines and metal detectors installed.

Eight new e-gates and eight immigration officer desks have also been added and will make embarkation and disembarking as fast and efficient as at Dubai Cruise Terminal. The cruise terminal in Ras Al-Khaimah is also expected to have a duty free, coffee shops and souvenir shops.

Is Ras Al-Khaimah good for shopping?

There are a range of shopping experiences available for cruise tourists in Ras Al-Khaimah, from the traditional to the newer western-style malls. The Old Souq in the city centre offers the most traditional shopping, with Arabic coffee sets, carpets, dates and other exotic items available.

For something more upmarket, head to the Al Nakheel area, a district with numerous boutique shops and a fancy new mall. This area is also sometimes referred to as Little India because it is home to most of the emirate’s Indian expat population. There are therefore many Indian shops and cafes as well.

There is also the bustling Fish Market where cruise tourists in Ras Al-Khaimah can have an interesting glimpse into the local way of life. For something more western, there are four main shopping malls in the city.

ras al khaimah cruise

Manar Mall and Al Naeem Mall are the two largest. There is also RAK Mall, Al Hamra Mall and Al Naeem City Center. All are home to designer names and large global brands.

Currency and language in Ras Al-Khaimah

The currency in Ras Al-Khaimah is the UAE dirham, and although the city is a growing tourist destination, other major foreign currencies are not widely accepted. The new cruise terminal is expected to contain a currency exchange within the building. The official language is Arabic, but English is widely spoken by most expats, which make up 60% of the population and occupy most customer-facing jobs.

How to behave in Ras Al-Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is one of the more liberal of the seven emirates in the UAE, and is not as strict with the dress code for tourists and expats. Modest dress is still encouraged, such as the custom of covering the knees and shoulders when entering a religious site. Bikinis and speedos are acceptable at the beach.

As with the rest of the UAE, being drunk, loud or in anyway abusive toward others in public is not acceptable in Ras Al-Khaimah.

Who cruises to Ras Al-Khaimah?

Seabourn Cruise Lines’ ship Seabourn Ovation is currently the only cruise ship with a scheduled port call in Ras Al-Khaimah for 2019, but from next year onwards the city is expected to see an increasing number of cruise ship visits, especially from cruise lines homeporting in the Arabian Gulf, cruising out of Dubai .

Khor Sham Dhow Boat Cruise

  • No rating yet
  • Free cancellation up to 3 days before
  • Hotel pick up

Discover the spectacular landscapes of the Gulf of Oman in a unique way on this  traditional dhow boat cruise to Khor Sham from Ras al Khaimah . Plus, you'll get to snorkel and enjoy lunch on board!

Crystal clear waters around Telegraph Island

Between 7 am and 8 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Ras al Khaimah. From there, we'll cross the border into Oman and take you to the coast of Khasab , where the dhow will be waiting to take us on a cruise of the Gulf of Oman .

Do you know what a dhow is? This typical Arabian sailing boat has a unique triangular sail, allowing it to sail without the need to paddle, regardless of the wind direction.

On board this traditional dhow boat , we'll sail on the warm waters of Ras al Khaimah towards the Khor Sham Fjord . This beautiful place is surrounded by towering mountains and small white sandy coves. What's more, if we're lucky, we might even see dolphins jumping and playing alongside the dhow !

Hungry? At midday we'll serve up a delicious buffet lunch on board the boat - the best way to refuel! But that's not all, after visiting the fjord, we'll anchor the boat at Telegraph and Seebi Islands so you can snorkel in the Gulf of Oman and enjoy the great marine biodiversity of the area.

At the end of our dhow cruise to Khor Sham , we'll sail back to the harbour and take you back to your hotel in Ras al Khaimah. Arrival is scheduled between 1 pm and 2 pm.

  • Travelspec_11 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful Experience! One of the best tours we've been on! Wonderful! The crew for our tour was so very kind and helpful. They provided numerous snacks, beverages and a tasty lunch. Also gave us wonderful insight into the fishing villages and pointed out many interesting landmarks along the way. We had a chance to snorkel, swim and just enjoy the beauty of this region of the world. Would highly recommend. The only downside was that I booked this through Oceanair Travel and was told we only needed a copy of our passport. Fortunately, when the driver came to pick us up he asked if we had the originals, as that was what we would need to get through border crossings. So we ran back upstairs to grab the passports. Glad for that, or we may have had issues at the borders. Read more Written March 6, 2023
  • RoHaTiTiPhi 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Extremely unpleasant to do business with. Constantly changing prices and charges at short notice. Hard to trust. The agreed prices changed several times. Sudden hidden charges were brought up by the tour operator (Musandam Ravel) such as payment with credit card, payment with PayPal, prices on the website were simply ignored and imprecise description of age limit led to a constantly increase in total amount. Last price hike was demanded late in the evening before the tour start. Agreed pick up times were changed. The tour itself was OK, with employees on the boat and the driver being very friendly and very helpful. Read more Written February 22, 2023

The boat trip from Oman border to middle of the sea was so scenic. The boat staff who were Bangladeshis went out their way to accommodate us. They cooked home food for us guest. We did various things like snorkelling, speed boat, banana boat, quick get off at the beach, fishing. Sadly we didn’t get to see the dolphins as the tour company promised but that’s ok. Defo worth booking this if you’re bored of Dubai same routine. Read more Written September 18, 2019

  • frankv787 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Bad weather unfortunately After a 1hr45min drive we arrived at the port in Oman. Because of the disappointing weather we had to stay too long in a small bay for swimming, snorkeling, beach visit or speedboat laps. The boat is nice, the crew helpful and the equipment sufficient. There are enough beverages and the lunch was pretty good (for being on a simple traditional boat). Unfortunately there was no good alternative for “a slightly rougher see” so we didn’t get to see much of the coast of Oman. So a disappointing trip because of the weather. ps Fjords refer to Norway, but there’s no comparison Read more Written March 27, 2019
  • dawni27 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Simply amazing This was by far the best part of our holiday. Oman is beautiful and in the Fjords it is very peaceful. We were picked up at 6:30 from our hotel in Dubai. It took us approx. 3-4 hours to get to Oman. At the borders the procedure was conducted very fast and smooth. The ship itself was covered in carpets and very comfortable pillows. You get tea, coffee and soft drinks all the time. The food was also really good. We got some chicken meat with bread and salat, a mini buffet with an excellent taste. We had two snorkelling opportunities. At the first one there were a lot of baby jellyfish, which were amazing to see and to touch. At the second snorkelling stop we saw a lot of fishes. The water wasn't that cold in February. It was definitely worth it. We also saw dolphins two times. They were jumping on the sides of our ship. It was amazing!! Our guide was really friendly and explained a lot about the Fjords and the people who live there. The other two guides on the boat were extremely friendly too and asked every 15 minutes if we want something to drink. What a service!! There is also a toilet on the boat, where you can also change to your swim clothes. I would really recommend this tour to everyone. Yes, it takes some time to get there from Dubai, but you have toilet breaks. The boat cruise took approx. 6 hours and will stay forever in our memory. Read more Written February 20, 2019

You see the ancient rock bare Mountains, pristine water, fish, dolphins that are playful, and remote Oman villages. Mr. Mohamed our driver was awesome as was Hedi the 5 language speaking cruise guide. The only criticism is that I hope they soon stop feeding the fish and use permanent anchor spots rather than dropping anchor. But it’s a new economy for the friendly Oman people. Dibba musandam trip from ras al khaimah, tour detail.

Meet & greet in Ras Al Khaimah, Transfer to Dibba Musandam, after crossing border arrive at Dibba port,  embark the traditional dhow with refreshment welcome on board.

At first you will observe the modern buildings of Dibba Bayaa’s fishing village dotted along the white sandy beach, then slowly civilization will fade away into the distance and you will start to get a sense that your heading into an ancient remote world far removed from the bustling city. During the cruise we’ll anchor in a picturesque location for you to enjoy swimming, beach combing, relaxing and snorkeling amongst the fish life and coral. We’ll serve you a delicious buffet lunch for you to enjoy amongst this stunning peaceful scenery.

As we head back towards civilization the captain will head out to sea to his favorite fishing location and invite you to try your luck at traditional hand-line fishing.

Want to know what it’s like being 1,934 metres above sea level? Go up the Jebel Jais Viewing Deck Park.

To reach the viewing deck, you must take the 20km winding road around the mountains leading to Jebel Jais. The road is accessible by cars, 4X4s, motorbikes, and cycles.

Once there, you will be able to enjoy a panoramic view of the mountain range that was formed over 70 million years ago, from seven viewing decks. You can also see some date wadis, villages, and the Arabian Gulf from these decks.

Shops located there also sell snacks and meals, making it a perfect spot for a getaway with family and friends.

National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah

Cost: Dh5. Children under three enter for free

The national museum contains artefacts from trading civilisations that have existed in this region since 5000 BC. Ras Al Khaimah is one of the few places that has continuously been inhabited throughout its history, making it one of the longest-settled places in the world. The museum exhibits highlight the long trading history of the Emirate. According to Visit Ras Al Khaimah, the museum was previously the primary residence of the ruling family.

Timings: 8am to 6pm

4. Flamingo Beach

Flamingo or Muairidh Beach

The beach is in the west of the UAE and is ideal for families because of its shallow shores and lack of currents.

The beach has a walking track, a volleyball court and various shaded seating areas. You can also set up a barbecue at the beach or enjoy the sunset and beach views from one of the many eateries located along the beach.

Describe your role with Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority.

Together with my team, we orchestrate the growth of Ras Al Khaimah’s tourism infrastructure and sustainability investments. Our overarching vision is to transform the emirate into a destination of the future, aiming to elevate its tourism contribution from 5 percent to one-third of its economy by 2030, attracting over 3.5 million visitors.

My responsibilities include a range of activities, from overseeing infrastructure and project development to negotiating international partnerships aimed at boosting inbound passenger traffic. I am particularly proud of our achievements in securing significant investments, such as the $3.9 billion (USD) deal with Wynn Resorts to develop a 1,500-plus-room integrated resort on Al Marjan Island.

Can you tell us about the new hotel openings in RAK?

Ras Al Khaimah is the fastest-growing tourism destination in the region. Our emirate has luxurious beachfront resorts, charming glamping options, and serene desert and mountain retreats. Currently, we have an impressive portfolio of 50 properties, with more than 8,000 rooms available for guests, and an additional 7,000 plus hotel rooms in development.

Our hospitality offering includes globally recognized brands such as Waldorf Astoria, Hilton, InterContinental, Ritz-Carlton, and Mövenpick. Recent openings like the Anantara Mina Al Arab Ras Al Khaimah Resort, offering ultra-luxurious Maldivian-style overwater villas, have been met with enthusiasm, and we have several exciting new projects in the pipeline, including Sofitel, Westin, Rove, Nobu, JW Marriott, W Hotels, and Nikki Beach. One of our most anticipated developments is the Wynn Al Marjan Island, set to debut in 2027 with more than 1,500 guest rooms, suites, and villas.

What sets us apart is not just our accommodation options, but also the diverse dining scene across our hotel portfolio, which ranges from traditional to contemporary cuisine. These include Umi, a theatrical showcase of Japanese food at the Waldorf Astoria, and Farmhouse, a farm-to-table concept located in a natural oasis on the grounds of the Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert.

What are your thoughts on the future of hotels and hospitality in the Middle East?

The year 2024 will be a transformative one for the Middle East hospitality sector as it adapts to new trends and shifts in consumer behavior—a year marked by technology, sustainability commitments, personalization, authenticity, and wellness.

From contactless check-ins to AI-powered room service and personalized digital concierge services, hotels are leveraging technology to enhance customer service and operational efficiency. Virtual reality tours and mobile apps for room control are becoming popular, offering guests a seamless and personalized experience.

Sustainability is another critical aspect influencing the future of hospitality in this region. As consumers become more environmentally conscious, hotels are implementing green initiatives such as waste-reduction programs, renewable energy usage, and sourcing local produce. The emphasis on sustainability is also reflected in the design and construction of new hotels, with eco-friendly materials and technologies being increasingly adopted. Aligning with global standards, we are proud to be the first EarthCheck-certified destination in the Middle East.

We are seeing a rise in momentum in Mideast hospitality—why do you think the region is breaking ground these days?

In the past few years, there has been a concerted effort by Middle East countries to promote tourism on a global scale via a mix of strategies, including creative marketing campaigns and hosting international events. As we have seen from Dubai Expo 2020 and 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, such global events have become catalysts for driving tourism and hospitality growth in the region.

The Middle East is seeing a growing number of high-net-worth visitors and luxury travelers from all over the world. There is a strong demand for premium hospitality experiences, including luxury resorts, high-end dining, and exclusive entertainment.

Moreover, the region’s strategic location between Europe, Asia, and Africa makes it a geographically convenient hub for international travel and transit. Countries like the UAE have positioned themselves as global aviation and transportation hubs, attracting travelers from around the world and therefore increasing the demand for hospitality services. With a growing network powered by partnerships with leading airlines, and an extensive array of hospitality and hotel offerings, Ras Al Khaimah’s unconventional experiences help position it as one of the fastest-growing destinations in the region.

<h2>It’s National Arab American Heritage Month in the United States. How has your Arab American identity influenced your career?</h2> <p>Growing up as an Arab American, with a Lebanese Argentinian mother and an American father, I was immersed in a rich tapestry of cultural experiences from an early age. Be it through food culture, celebrating both Thanksgiving and Eid, or by traveling a lot with my family, my upbringing was a vibrant blend of traditions that spanned continents. This multinational background, coupled with the privilege of growing up in Orlando and attending high school in Kuwait, exposed me to the world’s diversity and the universal values of hospitality and connection. It was this exposure to different cultures and traditions that honed my appreciation for hospitality and travel, which has been instrumental in my career.</p> <p>My journey to Ras Al Khaimah was not just a professional decision, but also a personal calling. Drawing on my diverse heritage, I saw in Ras Al Khaimah a reflection of the values I hold dear: a deep respect for heritage and a forward-looking vision for innovation and growth. It was here, in Ras Al Khaimah, that I found a destination that echoes my personal journey of bridging worlds, celebrating diversity, and creating connections. This journey, from the multicultural celebrations of my childhood to the strategic vision for RAKTDA, has been fueled by the belief in the power of travel to unite us across cultures and borders.</p> <h2>Tell us what you love about travel and hospitality—and what you would like to improve?</h2> <p>What I love most about travel and hospitality is the power it has to connect people, bridge cultural divides, and foster understanding and appreciation for the diversity of our world. Travel opens our minds to new ideas, challenges our perceptions, and enriches our lives in countless ways. In the realm of hospitality, the opportunity to create moments of joy and comfort for others is deeply rewarding.</p> <p>However, one area I believe the industry can improve is in sustainability. As we move forward, it’s imperative that we adopt more sustainable practices to protect the destinations we cherish for future generations. This means minimizing our environmental impact and ensuring that tourism benefits local communities and preserves cultural heritage.</p>

My decision to lead RAKTDA was inspired by my lifelong exposure to different cultures and the desire to bring to light the emirate’s rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, and warm hospitality. It was here, in Ras Al Khaimah, that I found a destination that echoes my personal journey of bridging worlds, celebrating diversity, and creating connections. This journey, from the multicultural celebrations of my childhood to the strategic vision for RAKTDA, has been fueled by the belief in the power of travel to unite us across cultures and borders.

Tell us what you love about travel and hospitality—and what you would like to improve?

What I love most about travel and hospitality is the power it has to connect people, bridge cultural divides, and foster understanding and appreciation for the diversity of our world. Travel opens our minds to new ideas, challenges our perceptions, and enriches our lives in countless ways. In the realm of hospitality, the opportunity to create moments of joy and comfort for others is deeply rewarding.

However, one area I believe the industry can improve is in sustainability. As we move forward, it’s imperative that we adopt more sustainable practices to protect the destinations we cherish for future generations. This means minimizing our environmental impact and ensuring that tourism benefits local communities and preserves cultural heritage.
