Starting from the Dog and Duck pub at Plucks Gutter, you can sail with Captain Colin to the Roman Fort at Richborough, the main landing place for the Roman legion over 2000 years ago, at the very beginning of the infamous Battle of Watling Street.. We offer 5-hour and 2-hour long trips depending on your preference, and our tours cover the whole of River Stour, all the way to the seals at the estuary and Pegwell Bay.

This experience is one that is perfect for families, couples and friends alike, one full of history, wildlife, the calming river and refreshments. What more could you want?

Through this experience you can be transported to those eventful days decades ago. Also explore the historic Roman Fort where you will disembark and make your way for a short walk to the fort itself.

Enjoy trips on the River Stour with River Runner, leaving the historic Sandwich Town daily and going to the Ancient Fort at Richborough upstream and the wonderful Seal Wildlife Sanctuary downstream.

The trips are approx 1 hr 3/4. We will run different times depending on the high water times of the day, from Sandwich Quay.

These trips are £25.00 per head, max of 12 people, under 3’s free.

Description

River Runner runs family-friendly trips on its modern and spacious catamaran that accommodates up to 12 passengers, and offers a range of tours and trips from Sandwich Quay and Ramsgate Harbour. They offer seal trips, Richbrough Roman Fort visits, and tours of Thanet's coastline.

Opening Hours Friday to Sunday School Holidays Daily.

Price £25 Child - under 3 years: Free Entry to Richbrough Roman Fort included.

Train Sandwich - 10 minutes Ramsgate - 15 minutes.

Accessibility For wheelchair-accessible trips, please book to depart from Ramsgate Harbour.

Additional Notes First tour boat in Kent to be WiSe accredited: the crew is Standard WiSe certificated, which means they are trained in interacting safely and minimising the disturbance to marine and coastal wildlife including seals, whales, dolphins (cetaceans), basking sharks, and seabirds.

Hop aboard the River Runner for a memorable trip along the beautiful River Stour to see the wildlife and learn about this historic river. Travel towards Shellness Point, on the edge of Pegwell Nature Reserve, to see the resident grey seal colony and seabirds, or towards the amazing Roman fort at Richborough.

Seal trips from Sandwich - approximately 1 hour 45 minutes

Travel down the River Stour taking in all the hidden history and wildlife on the way until you reach the resident grey seal colony on the edge of Pegwell Nature Reserve. The colony started here roughly 35 years ago - you'll have time to admire these beautiful marine mammals and capture the amazing views of our local coastline before heading back up river to Sandwich Quay. 

Richborough Roman Fort - approximately 3 hours

Departing from Sandwich Quay, travel the River Stour the Roman way! Take a return trip to Richborough Roman Fort to enjoy a historic day out with a difference. We will have the Sandwich toll bridge swung for us as we travel up river and take in all the river history and wildlife enroute. At Richborough there is a 5-minute walk through the forest to the Fort which adds to the Roman adventure (please wear suitable footwear as the walk is over uneven terrain). You will have 2 hours to explore before the return journey to Sandwich. Entry to the fort is included.

• The River Runner can accommodate up to 12 passengers per trip.
• Life jackets are provided and must be worn aboard at all times.
• If you have a health condition, you should make us aware BEFORE boarding. Your safety is our priority.
• The River Runner is moored at Sandwich Town Quay Steps approximately 15-20 minutes before each sailing.

Unfortunately, access to the River Runner at Sandwich is not suitable for wheelchair users, but access at Ramsgate Harbour is possible where the boats are adapted for easy wheelchair access boarding. Aboard there is ample room for up to 4 wheelchair users, plus their supporters/carers.

This morning, put on your adventure hat, grab your camera and visit the famed underground river on a boat ride through Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.
