Schilthorn: A Complete Guide For Visitors In Bernese Oberland

schilthorn guide

Schilthorn is neither the tallest nor most impressive mountain in Switzerland, but it’s certainly one of the most famous. It’s best known for the James Bond movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service , in which the mountain served as the lair of Blofeld, the film’s villain.

You don’t have to be a James Bond fan to enjoy your trip to Schilthorn, but it certainly helps. In addition to the Bond museum atop the summit, Schilthorn also boasts numerous hiking trails, ski pistes, cable cars, a funicular railway, Alpine villages, and stunning panoramic views in every direction.

This detailed guide has everything you need to know to plan your trip to Schlthorn, from directions on getting there to tips on what to pack!

General Information

Where is schilthorn.

Schilthorn

Schilthorn is in the Bernese Oberland, south of Interlaken. The mountain towers over the villages of Murren and Gimmelwald, both of which offer easy access to the summit via cable cars.

How to Get to Schilthorn

Schilthorn is not the easiest mountain to reach – if it were, do you think that Blofeld would have set up his lair at the summit? You don’t have to be James Bond to get to the summit, so here’s how you can travel to the Swiss mountain!

Via Grütschalp

The first stop on your way to Schilthorn is Interlaken. The city has the most train connections to other destinations in Switzerland, so if you’re planning to travel from Zurich, Geneva, Lucerne, St. Gallen, Bern, Basel, or any other bigger city in Switzerland, you can probably get a direct train to Interlaken.

From there, you head on to Lauterbrunnen, the village named after the valley. Check out the Staubbach waterfall since you’re already there, and head to the train station in Lauterbrunnen, where you can catch a cable car to Grütschalp for just 9.40 CHF (one-way ticket).

At Grütschalp you can board a train to Murren. It’s one of the shortest railways in Switzerland; the ticket is just 3.8 CHF and the ride is only 14 minutes long. Finally, at Murren, you can board the cable car to the final destination atop Schilthorn.

Via Stechelberg

Lauterbrunnen

If you don’t want to ride the mountain trains and gondolas at Lauterbrunnen and Grutschalp, consider traveling to Stechelberg. It’s just 12 minutes by bus from Lauterbrunnen, and the full ticket price is just 4.4 CHF, you can get all sorts of discounts with various travel passes for Switzerland.

At Stechelberg, you can ride a cable car to Gimmelwald and then Murren. The ride is just 10 minutes long, and the ticket price is 11.2 CHF, without any discounts (which are applicable).

It’s also possible to purchase tickets from Stechelberg all the way to Schilthorn – it’s the best option if you’re already heading to Piz Gloria since you won’t have to worry about individual tickets at every different station, which there are a lot of. Instead, you pay once, and your journey from Stechelberg – Gimmelwald – Murred – Birg – Schlthorn is covered.

A full-price ticket for the Stechelberg – Schilthorn return journey is 108 CHF (for adults), and multiple discounts can be applied to the price.

Cable Car from Murren to Schilthorn

Schilthorn

There’s only one way to travel to the summit at the top of Schilthorn, and that’s via a cable car. The bottom station of the cable car is at Murren, and there’s another station at Birg in between the village and the mountain summit. The gondola operates year-round and is closed only for maintenance or in severe weather.

The cable cars run from 5:55 AM until 22:55 PM. There’s a cable car every 30 minutes from 05:55 AM to 19:55 PM, and after that, there’s one per hour until 22:55 PM. A return trip from Murren to Schilthorn costs 85.60 CHF, and it’s possible to get various discounts on the ticket price.

One very important thing to note is that it won’t be possible to visit Schilthorn from 14.10.2024 until 15.03.2025. A reconstruction of the Birg – Schilthorn cableway is planned for this period, and it’s possible that ticket prices will change after the opening of the new Funifor cableway, which is supposed to operate 365 days a year.

Schilthorn Tickets & Prices

There are nine different tickets you can purchase for the journey to Schilthorn, and if you’re not entirely sure what you need, it can be confusing. The best tickets to buy are either Stechelberg – Schilthorn (108 CHF) or Mürren – Schilthorn (85.60 CHF), depending on where you’re departing.

Both are return tickets to the top of Schilthorn, and they cover every leg of the journey from the departure point. In general, it is cheaper to travel from Murren, but the difference is not that big, especially with travel card discounts.

The good news is that you can get discounts for most train and cable car tickets in this region if you have any of the travel passes that are valid in Switzerland. This includes the Swiss Travel Pass , the GA Travelcard, the Half-fare card, the Interrail Pass, and the Berner Oberland Pass.

The Eurail, Interrail, and Jungfrau Travel Pass will get you a 25% discount on the cable car tickets. All the other travel passes get you a 50% discount. Tickets for children are also 50% of the cost of adult tickets.

The cable cars and trains in this region run like clockwork. I’m not even joking – cable cars run every 15-30 minutes during the busiest time of the day. They’re a bit less frequent in the mornings and evenings, but they still run from 6 AM until 10 PM, so you can easily visit the summit at any time of the day.

The timetable from Lauterbrunnen to Murren via Grutshcalp is:

This timetable should cover every other leg of the journey up to Piz Gloria:

Weather on Schilthorn

Schilthorn

The weather on Schilthorn is what you would expect from a 3,000-meter summit. Winters are very cold, usually with sub-zero temperatures throughout the days and nights and a lot of snow. The weather in early spring and late autumn is very similar.

However, one thing I will say is that 2023 saw unusually high temperatures at Schilthorn in autumn. Even September had days when the daily high was above 15 degrees, and the lows stayed above zero most of the month.

Summers are much warmer; although it’s possible for temperatures to drop below zero at night even in the summer, it doesn’t happen very often. Most days are warm enough that you could walk around in a T-shirt without freezing.

Summer temperatures during the day are usually in the range of 10-15 degrees Celsius, while night temperatures are often between 0 and 5 degrees. The weather can change quickly, especially if it’s windy, so I would highly recommend being prepared for colder weather, even if the forecast says otherwise.

Best Time to Visit Schilthorn

The best time to visit Schilthorn is the summer because that’s the only period when the weather is pleasant. It’s warm enough that you can walk around the summit without having to wear a dozen layers, which ultimately makes it easier to enjoy your time atop the mountain.

However, keep in mind that summer is the busiest season to travel in Switzerland, so there will likely be many other tourists in the region as well. Murren is especially busy in the summer, so if you’d rather avoid the huge crowds, I recommend planning a trip in the shoulder months (April, May, September, October).

A trip in the winter is doable, but it won’t help you avoid the crowds of peak season because Murren and its surroundings get a lot of skiers and snowboarders in the colder months.

Things to Do At Schilthron

Panoramic views.

View from the top of Schilthorn

The views from the top of Schilthorn are absolutely incredible. The summit is at an elevation of 2,970 meters above sea level, and it offers sprawling views of other summits in the Bernese Alps. You can see the iconic trio of Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau, as well as many other peaks around you.

The best thing about the panoramic views is that they’ll come to you. The cable car ride is panoramic as much as just walking around the top station at Piz Gloria. Even the revolving restaurant has wide panoramic windows and tables right next to them so that all the patrons can constantly admire the vista that brought them here in the first place.

Schilthorn Piz Gloria

Piz Gloria is the revolving restaurant atop Schilthorn. It’s the only place where you can get something to eat if you get hungry atop the mountain, and as you might assume, the food isn’t cheap. But it’s really tasty and the restaurant offers stunning panoramic views even from the inside, thanks to huge panoramic windows and window-side tables.

Many dishes at the restaurant are inspired by James Bond, and of course, you can also have 007’s staple drink.

Piz Gloria in James Bond movie

Bond World or Spy World is the perfect destination atop Schilthorn for all movie lovers. It’s a museum dedicated to James Bond, with a special exhibit on the movie that was filmed at Schilthorn ( On Her Majesty’s Secret Service ).

Admission to the museum is free of charge, and anyone who visits can enjoy simulated rides in a helicopter and a bobsled. The exhibit is very informative and includes a lot of trivia and behind-the-scenes facts about the filming, as well as other interactive exhibits that will immerse you in the world of James Bond.

Walk of Fame

Walk of Fame

The Walk of Fame is a continuation of the James Bond hype atop Schilthorn. This walk along a ridge features information panels with images of 15 cast members from the film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service .

Each panel includes a handprint in steel, a photograph, and a personal message from the crew member. George Lazenby is, of course, featured on the Walk of Fame, and his panel is probably the one that gets the most visitors.

Skyline Walk

Skyline Walk

The Skyline Walk is my kind of observation deck. It’s also entirely unsuitable for anyone who is afraid of heights, but I think such people wouldn’t even want to travel to the top of Schilthorn in the first place.

Anyway, the Skyline Walk is an extension of the Birg station terrace. The observation deck juts out from the mountain cliffs, and it is quite literally suspended over an abyss. The views are fabulous, but what I like the most is that the part of the deck that’s suspended over the abyss has a glass floor. You can see the mountainside below you, and if that doesn’t give you an adrenaline rush I don’t know what will.

Thrill Walk

Birg Thrill Walk

Thrill Walk is very different from the Walk of Fame, primarily because it’s in a different location. It’s at the Birg cable car station, which is one stop before the summit at Piz Gloria. But it’s also a fascinating walk suitable for anyone, including children, and it offers magnificent panoramic views of the Bernese Alps.

The Birg Thrill Walk is a steel walk path with a glass floor, built into the cliffs just below the Birg station. You can see Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau from here, as well as countless other summits. The Thrill Walk is free to anyone who has purchased a cable car ticket.

Allmendhubel Flower Park & Flower Trail

Allmendhubel

Allmendhubel is also far from the Schlithorn summit, but a wonderful place you should visit if you’re taking your time while you travel up the mountain. The Allmendhubel Flower Park is a vast playground for children with sculptures of various flowers, and the Flower Trail is an exciting hike that’s absolutely worth doing if you enjoy exploring the great outdoors.

One thing I will say about the Flower Trail is that it only makes sense to do the hike in the spring or summer when you can actually see some flowers along the way. Otherwise, you’ll be looking at a layer of snow.

The hike takes only about an hour, and it takes you from Allmendhubel to Murren. The trail is easy and suitable for everyone, and if you’re starting at Allmendhubel, you are just going downhill to the village.

Shop for Souvenirs

Does it even count you went to Schilthorn if you didn’t bring a single souvenir? I think it does if you take enough photos, but just to be on the safe side, why not pick up some cute little Swiss souvenirs to take back home?

If you’re traveling to the summit via Gimmelwald, I highly recommend you visit The Honesty Shop. It’s a lovely little place with unique, vintage items, and it will give you a serotonin boost to shop at a place where the entire premise is you’re honest and the owners trust you.

You can also find some more classic souvenirs, like umbrellas, postcards, and even ice scrapers higher up the mountain. The Bond World has a souvenir shop that’s a good place for anyone who is a fan of the franchise, but keep in mind that the prices are quite steep.

Winter Activities

Winter in Schilthorn

If you decide to visit Schilthorn in the winter, you’ll have plenty of things to do in the area. The summit is part of the Jungfrau Skiregion, and a single ski pass can get you access to several hundred kilometers of pistes in the area.

There’s only one descent from Schilthorn and it’s a very steep and challenging black run, so it’s suitable only for the most experienced skiers. There are some easier blue runs at Birg, and even more runs of varying difficulties at Gimmelwald, Murren, and Allmendhubel. If you love skiing and want to take maximum advantage of the Jungfrau Skiregion pass , definitely try to visit Grindelwald and Wengen as well.

Winter hiking is also very popular in the lower regions of the mountain. There are many trails that connect the villages in the area, so you can hike from Murren to Allmendhubel, from Gimmelwald to Grutschalp, and even all the way from Wengen to Murren. One of the more challenging winter hikes is the ascent of Schiltgrat from Murren, which can be completed in about two hours and features an elevation gain of almost 500 meters.

Sledding and tobogganing are two more fun activities you can do at Schilthorn. They’re suitable for anyone who loves having fun on snow but isn’t really a massive fan of skiing or snowboarding. The Bob Run and the Apollo Run are part of Schilthorn’s Toboggan Safari , and both are very popular runs suitable for adults and children.

Both runs are accessible by either a funicular or a chair lift, and the fee is around 8 CHF for either ascent. You can rent sleds at Salomon Station 2.0 – the Intersport store near the bottom station of the Murren – Schilthorn cable car.

Summer Activities

Trummelbach Falls in Lauterbrunnen

Hiking is the most popular summertime activity in the region, thanks to an abundance of trails. Murren, Gimmelwald, Birg, and Lauterbrunnen offer more than two dozen different trails, and there are even more options if you’re willing to travel to Wengen or even Grindelwald.

It’s even possible to hike up to Schilthorn in the summer, but it’s important to keep in mind that this is a very challenging trail and should be attempted only by the most experienced hikers. Other summits in the area are more easily accessible, including Schiltalp, Bryndli, and Birg. Many experienced hikers also enjoy the trail to Rotstock Hutte .

The Lauterbrunnen Valley is best known for its many waterfalls, the most famous of which are Staubbach Falls and Trummelbach Falls . The Staubbach waterfall is in the village of Lauterbrunnen and you can see it when you’re first traveling to Schilthorn through the village. Trummelbach Falls are a little out of the way, but absolutely worth a visit if you want to see an amazing natural landmark.

There’s a Via Ferrata from Murren to Gimmelwald that any avid rock climber will want to attempt. It’s a K3 route and takes approximately 3 hours to complete, so it’s suitable only for the most experienced climbers.

The entrance to the route is near Sportchalet Mürren, and from there you follow the side of the cliffs to Gimmelwald, crossing a waterfall at one point. The route is steep and challenging but well secured, and all the time you’re treated to fabulous views of Stechelberg below you.

Alpine Villages to Visit Near Schilthorn

The area around Schilthorn is home to several charming Alpine villages, most of which you will pass through on your way to the summit.

Stechelberg

Stechelberg

Stechelberg is a tiny village best known for the Sefinefall waterfall. But that’s it for the attractions in the village – other than a few parking lots and the Stechelberg LSMS station, there’s really nothing else in the village.

Gimmelwald

Gimmelwald is the first stop if you’re heading to Schilthorn via Stechelberg. There are walking paths through the village, and you can already start to enjoy the panoramic views because Gimmelwald is high up on the mountain. Also, Gimmelwald is home to The Honesty Shop, which is the first unattended vintage shop in Europe.

You’ll find all sorts of local crafts here, and if you want to buy something, you just need to put the correct amount of money in an envelope. It’s a great place to pick up some souvenirs, and it feels good to justify the trust of the shopowners.

Murren

Murren is a lovely little car-free village popular year-round. It gets very busy in the summer with hikers who come from all over the world to explore the hiking trails in the Bernese Oberland. And in the winter, Murren hosts all those who want to ski in the Bernese Oberland, but don’t want to stay in Grindelwald.

Allmendhubel

Allmendhubel Hill

The Allmendhubel Hill is worth a quick visit if you’re in the area in the spring or summer, but not so much in the winter. The main reason to visit Allmendhubel are Alpine flowers, which you can explore when hiking the Flower Trail.

Birg

Birg is that middle station between Murren and Schilthorn, and it’s worth it to get out of the cable car here and explore the area for a little while. The station features observation decks with stunning views of the Alps, and it’s popular for skiing in the winter.

Where to Eat

Revolving restaurant at Piz Gloria

The revolving restaurant at Piz Gloria is the only restaurant atop Piz Gloria. It boasts panoramic windows throughout the entire place, so you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Swiss Alps along with every meal.

The menu at the restaurant is tourist-oriented with sandwiches, salads, and various Bond-inspired dishes. The 007 Burger is probably the most popular dish at Piz Gloria, closely followed by the 007 Spaghetti.

The restaurant is pricey but the food is good and the portions are generous. Also, you don’t have any other options if you get hungry after you’ve gotten out of the cable car at Piz Gloria.

Bistro Birg

Bistro Birg is at the Birg gondola lift station, halfway between Murren and Piz Gloria. It’s a classic Swiss bistro with mostly local dishes including Rosti, sausage, and grilled cheese sandwiches, but also other bistro staples like pasta, fried chicken, and french fries.

The restaurant is most popular for its vast outdoor terrace that offers sprawling views of the surrounding peaks. The views are so wonderful that you’ll want to sit down for a cup of coffee at the very least.

Panorama Restaurant Allmendhubel

If you wind up visiting Flower Park at Restaurant Allmendhubel , the Restaurant Allmendhubel will be the only place where you can get something to eat or drink. It’s a Swiss restaurant with classics like sausage and Rosti on the menu, but also other popular dishes like pasta, wraps, and salads.

One thing I really like about this restaurant is that they provide several vegan and vegetarian options that aren’t just french fries. You can have a proper meal without dairy or meat, and it’s great if you’re looking for vegan-friendly places to eat near Schilthorn.

Where to Stay Near Schilthorn

View of Hotel Alpnach in Murren

If you want to spend a few days in the area near Schilthorn, look for accommodation at either Murren or Gimmelwald. These two towns make the most sense because they offer direct access to the summit, plus they actually have a few other things to keep you busy, unlike Stechelberg or Birg. Let’s start with hotels in Murren, since is the bigger of the two villages.

The best hotel in Murren for Schilthorn visits is the three-star Hotel Alpenruh . It’s the closest one to the cable car station, and nightly rates are 170-250 CHF. Hotels Blumental and Jungfrau are in the central village area, with average nightly rates of 200 CHF for a double room. Hotels Eiger and Edelweiss Superior are a little pricier, but with larger rooms that go for 350-450 per night.

Gimmelwald has fewer accommodation options, but they’re cheaper than in Murren. There’s Mountain Hostel Gimmelwald where you can get a bed in a dormitory for approximately 45 CHF, or a private room for 135 CHF. The other options are mostly bed & breakfast places – Esther’s Guesthouse , Chalet Anneli , and Olle & Maria’s Bed and Breakfast .

What to Pack

It’s cold at Schilthorn throughout the year and you will need hiking boots and a warm jacket even if you’re visiting the mountain in the summer. I would recommend wearing layers so that you can make yourself more comfortable inside the restaurant and Spy World, which are much warmer than the outdoor terraces.

The weather can change quickly atop the mountain, and at one moment it can be a pleasant summer day, and the next you’re running inside the restaurant to seek shelter from the wind.

Also, it won’t be that cold during your entire journey. A jacket that might just succeed at keeping you warm at the top of Schilthorn will be way too warm for Lauterbrunnen and Murren, which is precisely why layers are your best friend.

Finally, don’t forget to bring sunscreen. The sun is much more intense in the mountains and the UV index can be decevingly high when you’re 2,500+ meters above sea level. This is especially important if you plan to do a lot of hiking or skiing since most trails are on exposed terrain.

Time Needed to Spend

Winter at Schilthorn

A trip to Schilthorn is usually just a one-day excursion. You don’t need more than a day to travel to the famous summit and see all of the famous landmarks and attractions it has.

However, if you’re interested in exploring more of the Bernese Oberland and you’re considering also spending some time in Murren, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, or even Interlaken, feel free to extend your trip.

You could easily spend a week exploring this region of Switzerland, and you still wouldn’t even see half of it. So, if you’re wondering how much time you need for Schilthorn, the answer is one day. But if you’re wondering how much time you need for the Bernese Oberland, the answer is anywhere from a couple of days, to a couple of weeks.

Schilthorn - Piz Gloria

Schilthornbahn AG Lengwald 301 3824 Stechelberg Phone  +41 (0)33 826 00 07 schilthorn.ch

The 2,970-metre Schilthorn offers 360-degree panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and more than 200 other peaks.

A cable car runs every half hour from Stechelberg  in the Lauterbrunnen  valley in four stages up to the summit. Once at the top, spectacular views of the Eiger, Mönch  and Jungfrau  await you. The Schilthorn became famous as a location for the 1969 James Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”. The revolving restaurant at the summit, which rotates around its own axis once every 45 minutes, owes its current name Piz Gloria  to the film production. Interested visitors can follow in James Bond’s footsteps in the interactive Bond World exhibition or on the 007 Walk of Fame. The Skyline Walk at the Birg middle station lets you stare into the abyss below. And if that’s still not enough excitement for you, why not take the Thrill Walk , a 200-metre long rocky path down among the vertical walls of the rock massif.

With 53 kilometres of pistes, toboggan runs and numerous winter hiking trails, Mürren and the Schilthorn attract winter sports enthusiasts. The ski area offers slopes for every taste, has infrastructure for freestylers - and of course the phenomenal view of an impressive mountain world.  The Piz Gloria, as the Schilthorn is also called, is also a Swiss hotspot of the telemark scene. Even after the end of the regular winter season, the followers of this primitive form of skiing technique meet every year late in the spring for the widely known "Telemark Only" event .  So there are plenty of reasons to learn how to ski "without a fixed binding" - as telemarking is also called - here. The local ski school has experts who quickly and professionally help guests to get a great feeling on the unfamiliar equipment.

A Complete Guide to Schilthorn Piz Gloria, Switzerland

A Complete Guide to Schilthorn, Switzerland and Piz Gloria revolving restaurant with James Bond by Aplins in the Alps

What do James Bond, a revolving restaurant, and the Swiss Alps have in common? The Schilthorn of course!

Here’s everything you need to know before you visit the Schilthorn, including the views, the food, and the James Bond activities.

If we haven’t met, we’re Jana and Brett, Aplins in the Alps . We help you travel Switzerland with confidence by maximizing your travels and minimizing your planning time. And since there’s a lot to see up here at the Schilthorn, let’s get started!

Where is Schilthorn, Switzerland?

This famous mountain in Switzerland is located in the Bernese Oberland of the Swiss Alps. It’s near Interlaken , Grindelwald , Lake Brienz, and Lake Thun. It’s perched above Lauterbrunnen Valley, Mürren, and Gimmelwald .

From the top, there are 360° views of 200+ Switzerland mountains, including Jungfrau (a (UNESCO World Heritage site), Mönch, and Eiger, plus Mont Blanc in France.

How to reach Schilthorn

There are 2 different ways to reach the Schilthorn from Lauterbrunnen Valley .

1 | BLM from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp to Mürren. However, if you come this way, you’ll need to walk about 10-15 minutes through the village to reach the Schilthornbahn.

2 | Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg to Gimmelwald to Mürren. You can ride bus 141 from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg, or drive and park your car there. The Schilthorbahn first opened in 1967 and was the world’s longest aerial cableway at the time. The Schilthorn cable car runs from Stechelberg to Gimmelwald to Mürren to Birg to Schilthorn.

Both of these options deliver you to Mürren , where you’ll ride the Schilthornbahn to Birg and then to the Schilthorn.

In our opinion, the easiest option is from Stechelberg to Schilthorn, which is only a 32 minute ride (and lifts run every 30 minutes—sometimes every 15 during peak season).

If you’ve already purchased our 1-Day Guide Near Mürren Bundle , then you can view the updated time tables in your spreadsheet!

Discounted Tickets to Schilthorn

Here’s the thing, Switzerland train tickets can be expensive. Thankfully, buying a Swiss Train Pass can really help!

For example, the standard adult roundtrip ticket from Stechelberg to Schilthorn costs 108 CHF .

— If you have a Eurail, Interrail, Top of Europe, or Jungfrau Pass, you get 25% off this trip, dropping the price to 81 CHF .

— But the Swiss Half Fare Card drops that even further to only 54 CHF .

— Or better yet, visit on your birthday and get a FREE roundtrip ticket! That’s what Brett did last year and it was awesome.

— And by the way, if you have kids, definitely ask for the complimentary Swiss Family Card (free if you hold a Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass) because then your kids can ride to the Schilthorn for completely FREE !

James Bond movies On Her Majesty's Secret Service Schilthorn, Switzerland Piz Gloria revolving restaurant by Aplins in the Alps

James Bond at the Schilthorn

Riding a cable car to the top of a mountain in the Swiss Alps is already pretty amazing. But to make it even cooler, they built the world’s first revolving restaurant at nearly 3,000 meters in altitude!

Obviously, that was cool enough for James Bond (George Lazenby) to film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service here in 1968. Now more than 3 million people visit the Schilthorn every year for the views, the restaurant, and, well, just because James Bond was here.

But here’s what else you can do at the Schilthorn!

James Bond Schilthorn Skyline View Platform observation platform in the Swiss Alps by Aplins in the Alps

Skyline View Platform

When you first come up here, you can’t help but admire the 200+ Switzerland mountain peaks, many of which have snow year round. Of course you can see the iconic trio of the Jungfrau (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Mönch, and Eiger. If the skies are clear enough, you can even view the Mont Blanc in France and the Black Forest in Germany! (They have fantastic signs to help you see where each of these mountains are.)

Wander around the entire platform because it nearly wraps completely around the building, with plenty of spots for viewpoints and photos.

A Note About Switzerland Weather

The daily temperature can definitely fluctuate, so bring a jacket when you venture up here. In fact, the Schilthorn weather averages around 8°C / 46°F. The sun makes it feel warmer while clouds or a cool breeze make it feel even chillier.

The cold weather also explains why you can see a small pile of snow stored beside the observation platform. There are 2 snow depots where they store snow year round. And it may just appear like a tiny hill, but there’s enough snow on Schilthorn and Birg to fill up about 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools!

Step down into the snow from the observation platform. Don’t hesitate to form a snowball or make a snow angel! (Glimpse the bigger snow field down at Birg, too.)

Walk of Fame

If you’ve ever wanted to fist bump James Bond, now is your chance! Head down the steps to the Walk of Fame, a short walk with 15 information panels about the cast of James Bond On Her Majesty’s Secret Service .

Each tall brown panel features a picture of the actor/actress, their personal signature, a handprint with a personal message, and a fist to fist bump.

If you’re like Jana, then you enjoy learning interesting things. For example, one of these panels explained how the late Queen of England is actually a Bond Girl!

Piz Gloria View

Visit the Piz Gloria View — because 1 observation platform isn’t enough! The Skyline View Platform provides a view of the Swiss mountains, while this one delivers a glimpse of the Piz Gloria with the Swiss Alps surrounding it. Talk about a panoramic terrace!

And if you forgot your camera, this has a souvenir photo opportunity where you can buy your pictures online!

See those bright wooden boxes beyond the Skyline View Platform? Those are actually benches!

Pass through the gate and walk carefully along the ridge toward a bench. Each one faces a different direction so you can pick your preferred view!

Cozy up on a bench with captivating panoramas. But if it’s a sunny day, you might get warm enough to shed your jacket. And don’t forget your sunscreen since we’re at 2970m/9744 feet in elevation!

Piz Gloria Restaurant

Piz Gloria isn’t your ordinary restaurant — because it spins! It’s kinda like a donut where the outer ring of the restaurant rotates but the center remains stationary. Don’t worry about getting dizzy; it takes 45 minutes to complete one rotation. It’s slow enough to walk on and off of the rotating part and moves fast enough to catch 360° alpine views.

Like most restaurants, Piz Gloria has a standard menu, but most people visit here for the James Bond Brunch, Piz Gloria afternoon platter of regional meats/cheese/wine, or 007 Burger.

James Bond Brunch

Before you visit Schilthorn Piz Gloria, make a reservation online . The tables can fill up quickly, and sometimes making a reservation means you get a window seat for unobstructed views. No matter when you book, you’ll have a table for 90 minutes, which is 2 complete restaurant rotations!

Tip: Follow our 1-Day Guide to Mürren to learn about the best time to visit the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant!

The James Bond Brunch is a breakfast buffet from 8am-11am and then a lunch buffet from 11am-2pm. You’ll also find cold cuts of meat, cheese and fruit no matter when you enjoy this bottomless brunch.

After you check in for your reservation, they will take you to your table and give you a sticker. Place the sticker on your shirt and then you can go up to the buffet as many times as you’d like during your reservation.

Don’t forget your table number, because your table will be in a different place every time you go to/from the buffet.

Our fav picks: the soft cheese, white sausage, braided bread, and cinnamon rolls!

Is the James Bond Brunch a good value?

— Adult = 35 CHF

— Kids 6-16 = 20 CHF

— Kids 0-5 = Free

— Save money by purchasing a combo lift + brunch ticket

We know that eating out in Switzerland isn’t exactly a budget activity , but this self-service, all-you-can-eat buffet is a great deal and honestly the food is excellent! We have been here three times and every time it has been worth it — we even think James Bond would agree!

Schilthorn Bathrooms

Be sure to visit the bathrooms at the Schilthorn because they come with a 007 twist! Pay attention to what happens when you flush the toilet or wash your hands…but we won’t give all the surprises away!

Honestly, the Schilthorn has carried the James Bond theme throughout the building, and the details are well-done — and entertaining!

Spy World interactive 007 museum James Bond Schilthorn, Switzerland by Aplins in the Alps

James Bond Spy World

Speaking of entertaining, you can practice being a secret agent, just like James Bond, in Spy World!

James Bond On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was filmed here in 1968 (the one with George Lazenby). The iconic feature of the movie was the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant, but you can explore even more about the movie here in Spy World.

If you’re a Bond fan or enjoy movie trivia, then you’re probably going to love this. But even if you’ve never seen the movie, you can still pretend you’re riding on a bobsled or flying a helicopter or dodging bullets, just like James Bond did.

In fact, I read that they had reopened a closed bobsled run just for this movie…and it was closed due to how dangerous it was. But that was no trouble for Bond because, well, he’s James Bond!

James Bond Spy Cinema

For even more spy-like action, relax in the Spy cinema. A 12-meter curved screen shows clips of stunts from the James Bond movie and aerial views of the Schilthorn.

And when we visited, there was also a showing of the new Schilthornbahn 20XX, the brand new cable car line being built right now (in 2022).

Skyline Top Shop

When you take a vacation, you want to bring home more than just memories. And although the Schilthorn is super memorable, don’t pass the Skyline Top Shop for some creative souvenirs!

We found a neat wooden postcard here that we’re going to frame and hang in our house! But of course they have Swiss chocolate, Swiss watches, Swiss cow figurines, and all of the Swiss things you expect in a tourist shop!

Skyline Take Away

If you are somehow hungry after the all-you-can-eat James Bond Brunch, or if you’re craving a snack or a hot drink, the Skyline Take Away has you covered. It’s right in the lobby near the elevators and entrance to the Skyline Observation Platform.

Near here is also a free charging station with cords for any kind of device. This was actually pretty handy since our phones were starting to lose battery power!

Birg Thrill Walk in Birg Switzerland near Gimmelwald by Aplins in the Alps

Birg, Switzerland Thrill Walk

There are a few more thrilling things we want to show you near Schilthorn…but they’re down at the Birg Station.

The lifts descend every 30 minutes, and Birg is one stop below.

If you own our Guide to Mürren , then you’re already familiar with Birg, some of the incredible hikes you can do from here, and how to fit a visit here into your day or weekend in Mürren.

But the number one reason you stop here is for the Birg Thrill Walk—plus it’s already included in your lift ticket (FREE)!

Here you traverse beside the cliff and over a glass floor and through a tunnel while perched high above the ground.

So if you have a fear of heights, I know you can do it! Be brave! Or at least walk on the side to bypass the scary elements so you can still admire the view! (Or you can watch from the panoramic observation platform above).

…If Bond were here, he wouldn’t even need a Thrill Walk. He’d just climb across the entire cliff! 😀

The Schilthorn is just one of many great things you can enjoy while visiting the Jungfrau Region. So if you’re searching for more things to do near the Schilthorn, we made this guide and this guide to help you enjoy the perfect day in and around Mürren and the entire Jungfrau region. And the Schilthorn is just the first stop of the 12+ places we share with you.

A Complete Guide to Schilthorn Switzerland | Logistics, Weather & Webcams

Do you want to see the Alps from above, including sweeping views of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau? Well if you head up to Schilthorn above the Lauterbrunnen Valley you will get to experience just that.

With 360 degree views of snow capped mountains in every direction, this is one experience you will not want to miss out on when visiting Switzerland.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to take part of a trip to Schilthorn. From logistics and costs to attractions and things to do, it covers it all. So let’s get into it!

*  Affiliate Disclosure : This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a commission if you make a purchase through the links provided, at no additional cost to you. Thanks for supporting the work I put into TripTins!

1) Introduction to Schilthorn

One of the top things to experience in the Alps is getting up to some of the highest points to take in the views. Schilthorn gives you that exact opportunity and it makes for one incredible half or full day trip (depending on where you are coming from).

At 2,970 meters / 9,744 feet, Schilthorn is one of the tallest peaks you can visit in the region and heading on up by cable car to the top of the mountain will give you the chance to enjoy views that are just not possible from other places.

Not only will you take in the vast landscape but you will also have the opportunity to have some drinks or lunch at a rotating restaurant that was featured in the James Bond film ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’, enjoy the Birg Thrill Walk, and end your day in the mountainside town of Murren.

There is just so much to experience when visiting Schilthorn and I am hoping this guide helps you better understand how to take part of a trip there for yourself.

Construction Note : There is currently a major cable car renovation project in the works that is set to last until 2026. Schilthorn will still be open for the majority of this time, but do expect some areas / viewing platforms to be closed.

Schilthorn Cable Car

2) How to Get to Schilthorn

Getting to Schilthorn can involve a bit of logistics depending on where you are coming from in Switzerland. Trains, busses, and multiple cable cars will be involved so I will try and break down each part of the process so you can easily be on your way.

There are two route options to choose from that I will walk through below, and you can decide between the two based on time or travel preference.

To make logistics as easy as can be, you can download the SBB mobile app that will give you up to date schedules and show you all the connections needed during the trip.

Nearly all routes up to Schilthorn will go through the valley town of Lauterbrunnen . So if you are coming from Interlaken, Wengen, Grindelwald, etc. you will need to first make your way to Lauterbrunnen.

Because of this the map below shows the two options starting in Lauterbrunnen and making their way up to Schilthorn from there.

Essentially Option 1 via Grutschalp will take you up alongside the valley and Option 2 via Stechelberg will take you through the valley. The below goes into more detail about each one.

As a base I will start out in Interlaken but that can easily be tailored to wherever you may be staying.

Option 1 – via Grutschalp

Step 1: Interlaken Ost Station to Lauterbrunnen (Train / 30 minutes)

The first part of the trip will consist of a 30 minute train ride from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen. These trains run pretty consistently (every half hour or so) and will bring you to the base of the valley, where you will continue your trip.

Note that if you aren’t staying directly near the main town of Interlaken, it might be easier and faster to first hop on a bus to Wilderswil and take the train from Winderswil to Lauterbrunnen.

Step 2: Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp (Cable Car / 5 minutes)

The first option for step 2 is to take a 5 minute cable car up from Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp. The cable car station is right outside of the train station and can’t be missed.

Step 3: Grutschalp to Murren (Mountain Railway / 15 minutes)

Once off of the quick cable car up above the valley, you can hop on the mountain train from Grutschalp to Murren. This mountain train will be timed up pretty nicely with the cable car and will take about 15 minutes to get to the lovely car free town of Murren.

Once in Murren you will need to walk through the town to get to the cable car station.

Step 4: Murren to Schilthorn via Birg (2 Cable Cars / 20 minutes)

Now that you are in Murren, it is time to make your way all the way up to Schilthorn. To do so you will take a cable car from Murren to Birg, and then switch cable cars from Birg to Schilthorn.

Option 2 – via Stechelberg

Step 1: Same as above

Step 2: Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg (Bus / 15 minutes)

Instead of opting for the cable car and train to get to Murren, you can also take the 141 bus down the valley from Lauterbrunnen all the way to Stechelberg.

This 15 minute bus ride will be incredible as you drive through the valley with waterfalls coming off the side of the mountains and the Alps out ahead in front of you.

Step 3: Stechelberg to Gimmelwald and onto Murren (2 Cable Cars / 10 minutes)

Once you reach Stechelberg you will have to take a series of 2 cable cars to reach Murren. First you will head up to Gimmelwald and after a short ride you will switch into a cable car that will take you up to Murren.

Step 4: Murren to Schilthorn via Birg (2 Cable Cars / 20 minutes) – Same as above

After getting off the the second cable car from Gimmelwald, you will then head up another two cable cars from Murren to Schilthorn (Murren to Birg and then Birg to Schilthorn)

As you can tell it is not that simple to get all the way up to Schilthorn from Interlaken. But with the precise transportation system of Switzerland, it should not be too difficult to complete the journey. The whole thing from Interlaken to Schilthorn should take a little less than 90 minutes.

Schilthorn Logistic Options

If coming from a town like Wengen or Grindelwald, you can easily use the above logistics after step 1. At the end of the day you just need to get to Lauterbrunnen, where you can follow the directions from there.

Both Wengen and Grindelwald have trains that will take you to Lauterbrunnen where you can then begin your journey. If staying in Murren, well then you are in luck as it will just require taking the two cable cars up to the top.

3) Map of Schilthorn Transportation

Here is a visual look at the map of the Lauterbrunnen Valley and the journey up to Schilthorn via the two different options to get you better oriented.

Lauterbrunnen is on the bottom right hand side of the image, and from there you will either go up (Option 1) or across to the left (Option 2).

The Lauterbrunnen Valley Map

4) Ticket and Transportation Costs

Next, we can talk about the cost to go up to Schilthorn. This will depend on a few things – first where you are staying, secondly if you have any sort of Switzerland travel pass, and lastly which route/s you would like to take up and down.

To learn more about transportation in Switzerland and the various travel passes, check out the Switzerland Train Travel Guide .

Below is the latest price list to Schilthorn. As you can see the round trip (letter D) starting in Interlaken going up with Option 1 above, and down with Option 2 costs 127.60 CHF (63.80 CHF with Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card).

You can also check out a few other prices they have up there such as letter A for 108 CHF, which is simply the round trip price of the cable car from Stechelberg to Schilthorn (does not include roundtrip to get from Interlaken to Stechelberg).

Schilthorn Prices 2023

Swiss Travel Pass: While this chart doesn’t have every itinerary/combination available, it does give you a good idea about prices.

With that said if you have the Swiss Travel Pass everything mentioned up to Murren is free. This is a big change from previous years when everything up to Schilthorn was free.

So the trains, busses, cable cars from Interlaken all the way to Murren are all free. Once in Murren the Swiss Travel Pass will give you a 50% discount and you will need to pay the 42.80 CHF for the round trip from Murren to Schilthorn (second line, letter B)

Schilthorn Boarding Pass: Recently the Schilthorn boarding pass was introduced. For an extra 5 CHF (must be purchased ahead of time online or at a ticket booth), you can have a guaranteed cable car departure time.

Instead of waiting in line for the cable cars, you can go through a separate entrance and be guaranteed a spot for the time of your choosing.

Swiss Travel Pass : Are you planning on traveling frequently throughout Switzerland during your trip? Consider purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass to save some money!

5) Schilthorn Webcam & Weather

Schilthorn is open year round so no matter what season you happen to be around the area, you will be able to head up top to enjoy the view.

Note that Schilthorn has two closure maintenance periods: April 24 – April 28 2023 and November 11 – December 8 2023.

With that said though, do not plan on spending the money and time to head all the way up to Schilthorn if the weather is not cooperating.

The last thing you want to happen is to get up to the top and be covered in clouds with no views. There are two ways to make sure that does not happen to you.

First you will want to check the Schilthorn weather on meteoblue.com starting a few days ahead of time. Here you will be able to see whether it will be sunny, rainy, cloudy, etc. Meteoblue is known for its accuracy around the area so make sure to check them out instead of a weather.com site for example.

The second thing you will want to check is the all important Schilthorn webcam. These webcams – stationed at Allmendhubel, Birg and Schilthorn will give you a good idea how cloud coverage will look like.

Just because the weather forecast says partly sunny does not mean there are no clouds at all. There is definitely a chance that those clouds are hovering around the top of the mountain and taking away the view, so be sure to check the webcams before heading out.

Lastly take a look at the weather in Switzerland guide I put together that will go more in depth about these helpful weather tips.

Schilthorn Night View

6) What to Wear

At 9,744 feet (2,970 meters), the top of Schilthorn can get a bit chilly no matter what time of year. Because of this you should bring layers for the day as I am sure once you head down back into the valley, it will start to be much warmer.

Pants and a sweatshirt / pullover will be essential to keep warm (especially earlier in the morning) and then you can stow them away in a backpack as the day goes on.

Similar to above – when looking at what the temperature will be like for the day, make sure to input “Schilthorn”, and not Interlaken or Murren or wherever else you may be staying as the weather on top of the mountain will be much cooler.

You can also take a look at the Hiking Packing List I put together to give you a better idea of what to bring along for the day.

Schilthorn Flags View

7) A Trip to Schilthorn

Now that we have gone over everything you need to know before and during your journey, lets move on to the attraction itself.

There a few different stops / activities that you can take part of during your time around the area, as you make your way up and down the mountain.

A) Schilthorn Views

We will start off at the main attraction itself – Schilthorn. Once you arrive all the way up top you will be welcomed by incredible views all around you.

The snow capped peaks will be in every which direction and the views go on for miles and miles. You can make your way all the way around the top of Schilthorn in order to get your pictures and videos from all different angles.

I would spend at least 45 minutes, walking the outside, heading out to the variety of lookout points and just taking it all in. Believe me, on a clear day the views of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau all lined up is one of the best there is to offer.

As you make your way around the area you will come across the main viewing platform, the 007 Walk of Fame, and the Piz Gloria Viewpoint (a short walk below the viewing platform).

swiss travel pass schilthorn

B) Piz Gloria

Once done with the views from the outside, you can head inside to warm up a bit and have a drink or even lunch. The restaurant inside (which was featured in the James Bond film) has a rotating floor.

As you sit in one spot, you will slowly make your way 360 degrees around and get to see all sorts of views. Note that it does go quite slowly so it does take quite some time for you to make one full rotation.

In the restaurant they offer a James Bond brunch. Although I did not order it, the buffet brunch had a lot of options and looked as if it is worth the money. If you don’t opt for the brunch you can still grab a beer, coffee or a variety of food options and relax and enjoy the views.

Schilthorn Piz Gloria Bar

C) Bond World

Now that you have taken in all the views from the inside and outside, it is time to make your way downstairs to the James Bond museum – Bond World.

Here you will get to play a bunch of interactive games and read up on James Bond and On Her Majesty‘s Secret Service.

Other things available at the top of Schilthorn include a small food/drink takeaway stand (if you don’t want to eat at the restaurant), and a gift shop with all sorts of souvenirs to buy.

Schilthorn Bond World Entrance

Take a look at some Switzerland itineraries and guides to better prepare you for your trip:

  • Switzerland Itineraries: 10 Day Switzerland Itinerary | 7 Day Switzerland Itinerary | 5 Day Switzerland Itinerary
  • Jungfrau Hikes: Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg | Murren to Gimmelwald Trail | Murren Via Ferrata | Bachalpsee Lake Hike
  • City Guides: One Day in Bern | Things to do in Geneva | A Day Trip to Montreux

Once you have had enough time exploring the ins and outs of Schilthorn, and taking in all the views from up top, it is time to head down one cable car stop to Birg.

The cable cars leave pretty frequently and you will see a countdown clock for when the next car is set to depart down. After a quick ride you will arrive in Birg at 8,783 feet.

Schilthorn Cable Car Clouds

The best part for me about Birg was the riveting Birg Thrill Walk around the mountain. Once you go outside you will see signs pointing you downwards towards the walk.

During this walk you will get to experience a few different unique and “thrilling” things.

Most of the walk itself (around 200 meters) is on a steel platform. However throughout the walk you will get to walk on a wire, crawl through a cage, and stare directly down through a see through glass floor.

For each of these experiences, you will also have the option to pass them off to the side on the steel platform.

Birg Thrill Walk

Also to note – if you have not eaten yet, there is a restaurant at Birg as well – the Bistro Birg. Up top near the restaurant patio you will also find the Skyline Walk, which is a great viewpoint to see the unobstructed alps laid out in front of you.

Birg View

E) Back Down to Murren

Now that you have explored both Schilthorn and Birg, it is time to continue on the next cable car down to Murren.

Once in Murren you can opt to walk around the area, have lunch, and just explore this quaint mountainside village. The views down into the valley are some of the best you can ask for.

If you have the time you can take the mountainside funicular to Allmendhubel. Around the area you will find a great playground for children and some nice easy flower hikes with more incredible views.

You can also continue all the way back down to the valley on the next two cable cars (Murren to Gimmelwald and Gimmelwald to Stechelberg).

Once at the bottom you can then decide what else you might want to do around the area, such as a hike through the Lauterbrunnen Valley and a visit to Trummelbach Falls , or just make your way back to your hotel.

Murren Town

8) Where to Stay in the Jungfrau

As mentioned earlier there are a lot of different options to where to stay around the area.

The easiest spot will be Murren, the tourist hub would be Interlaken, or you could stay in nearby towns such as Lauterbrunnen , Wengen or Grindelwald.

I put together a guide to Where to Stay in the Jungfrau – Murren, Wengen or Grindelwald , if you want to go more in depth about each one.

Some of my recommendations would be:

Very details and good information! But where can i buy the round trip ticket from Interlaken OST to Schilthorn ( option D, CHF63.8) in your content? Thank you. Am i able to buy at interklaken OST?

Hi there - give the official Schilthorn website a try (Online Shop - Tickets). If not, my best guess would have to be the Interlaken Ost station. Just note though that I would only recommend purchasing tickets once you know the weather is clear up there. Hope you enjoy the trip!

Hi Dave, I am a new subscriber! I have a question. If budget is not an issue and I had to choose between Jungfrau or Schilthorn which would you recommend? We will be in Wengen for this part of our trip. And of Mt.Pilatus, Rigi and Titlis which one would you recommend? We will be in Lucerne by this time. We want to choose one that will give us a different experience than Jungfrau/Schilthorn as we would already have done one of these in first half of our trip. I have read upon all of these and still can't decide! Thank you.

Hi Grace - I really dont think you can go wrong with either. If you care about views then from the Jungfraujoch you get amazing glacier views while from Schilthorn, you get views of the mountain range out in front of you (Jungfrau, Monch, Eiger).

I think Pilatus is a great option to consider as you can take part of the round trip circuit with cable cars & boat rides. It is an easy and enjoyable day trip from the city center of Lucerne.

Enjoy the trip!

Hi, Your post is so informative. This is my first trip to Switzerland and I will be staying in Grindelwald. I plan for a day trip on 14th December to visit Schilthorn. My planned itinerary is start at 9am from Grindelwald - Männlichen - Wengen by cable car. After visiting Wengen (stay for 30 mins) then take the cogwheel train to Lauterbrunnen (stay for 30 mins). Then take a cable car and train to Murren (stay for 30 mins) follow by Schilthorn (stay 45 mins). Returning by cable car, bus and train Murren - Stechelberg (stop for 30 mins) - Lauternrunnen - Interlaken - Grindelwald. Based on this itinerary, do you think I can cover all this places within a day? Will this itinerary consider too tight schedule? I have Swiss Travel pass, can I buy the discounted return Schilthorn cable car at Murren cable car station? Highly appreciate is you can advise me. Thanks

Best Regards, Falco Lim

Hi Falco - in my opinion, it seems like you are trying to fit a lot into one single day. Spending just 30 minutes in the places you mentioned will just be rushed and you wont get to fully experience each one of these towns. Ideally a day like this is split into two, but if you just have one day I would recommend the following: train from Grindelwald to Lauterbrunnen, travel to Schilthorn via Murren, back down for Murren for lunch, and then spend the remainder of the day in the Lauterbrunnen Valley before returning to Grindelwald. And yes, you can buy the cable car tickets in Murren (or Stechelberg). Enjoy your trip!

The Schilthorn is a mountain peak near Lauterbrunnen at 2970m, with a spectacular viewpoint accessible by cable car. At this popular tourist destination, you can admire the famous Eiger and many other mountains in the Jungfrau region. It’s an expensive outing, but a great choice for anyone that wants to see big views without hiking.

Besides the views, this area has more amusements at various points along the cable car route, so you can fill up your day. At the Birg middle station, there is a full “thrill walk” with a metal walkway built into the side of the mountain. At the Mürren village below, you can visiting an alpine flower garden and large playground with a view. Plus many hiking trails crisscrossing the mountain.

By public transit

Discount tickets, check the weather, 007 walk of fame, schilthorn visitor center, hiking near schilthorn, birg “thrill walk” – don’t miss, is the schilthorn good for children, is the schilthorn better than jungfraujoch, what to wear at schilthorn, where can you eat at the schilthorn.

The Schilthorn peak is located near Lauterbrunnen in Bernese Oberland. See location on Google Maps .

swiss travel pass schilthorn

You reach the top of the Schilthorn by taking a series four cable cars, starting at Stetchelberg in the valley. You pass through Gimmelwald, Mürren and Birg, about a 40 min journey one way.

At the top you’ll find an outdoor panorama deck, a restaurant, gift shop, James Bond “museum”, etc. Plan to spend at least an hour at the top.

swiss travel pass schilthorn

One stop down at Birg, you’ll find another panorama deck and a “Thrill Walk,” a fun elevated walkway built onto the side of a cliff. This is definitely worth a visit on your way down. There is a more casual cafe here for snacks and lunch. Plan to spend about an hour at this stop.

On your way back down, stop in Murren and consider visiting the Allmendhubel Flower Park , which is a big playground for kids. This is accessed from a short funicular ride in Murren.

There are many hiking options in the region. All hikes from Schilthorn and Birg station are steep alpine trails, suitable for older children with hiking experience. We did a wonderful hike from Birg to Gimmelwald (10.7 km) with our kids, but it was difficult and long.

An assortment of family friendly hikes are accessed from Murren, particularly the Allmendhubel Flower Trail .

How to get there

From Interlaken, drive through Lauterbrunnen and up the valley to Stechelberg . Park in the metered lot next to the gondola station.

Take the train to Lauterbrunnen , then a bus to Stechelberg, Schilthornbahn (about a 10 mins ride). The bus drops right at the cable car station.

Alternatively, you can start in Lauterbrunnen and take a cable car up to Grütschalp . Then a mountain train across to the car-free village Mürren . Then a short walk through the village to the Mürren cable car station , where you can ride up to the Schilthorn.

Planning your day

You can purchase tickets at the cable car ticket office at Stechelberg, Mürren or Lauterbrunnen. In 2024, a return ticket from Stechelberg to Schilthorn costs CHF 108 per adult. See current Schilthorn prices .

  • Book day trip from Zurich

The following discounts are available

  • Half Fare Card – CHF 54
  • GA, Swiss Travel Pass , Berner Oberland Pass – CHF 42.80
  • Eurail Pass – CHF 81
  • Children (6-15) – CHF 54
  • Children under 6 or with Junior Card – free

If you have a Jungfrau Travel Pass , you can travel to Mürren for free via the Grütschalp cable car and Mürren mountain train. Then you can purchase a Schilthorn return ticket from Mürren for CHF 85.60. The Stechelberg-Mürren cable car is not included in the Jungfrau Travel Pass.

Note that you do not get a discount with SBB day tickets.

Operating times

The Schilthorn complex and viewing area is open year round, except for brief maintenance periods in April, late November and early December.

The gondola runs to the Schilthorn about every 30 mins from 7:25 to 16:25, last descent 18:03. The cable cars from Murren to Stechelberg run much later in the evening. Check the current timetable .

Before buying your ticket, check the Schilthorn webcams . There is no reason to go up unless you have a clear view. We were advised to go early in the day, as clouds often move it after noon. But check the weather forecast, particularly the cloud and precipitation weather animations on Search.ch as weather can change quickly in the mountains.

Schilthorn Activities

The main attraction is the large outdoor viewing platform with a 360 panoramic view of the Jungfrau region. The viewing platform is surrounding by a metal fence, so no worries about little kids running around.

The observation deck at the top. There are several telescopes so you can check out the various mountain peaks.

One of the many views from the Schilthorn observation deck.

The below pictures were from our trip in early July 2006, around 9am at the top. I recommend getting up there early to beat crowd and afternoon clouds.

swiss travel pass schilthorn

The observation desk has these “Kids View” stations, where it asks a question and you look through the peephole to get a clue to the answer.

swiss travel pass schilthorn

If you leave the observation deck, there is the 007 Walk of Fame , which is a short walk with information boards honoring the stars and crew of “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.”

My kids liked comparing their handprints to each person.

swiss travel pass schilthorn

This helpful diagram on their website shows the whole complex. Besides the little movie, showing scenes from the 007 film, there’s not much to do up top besides enjoy the view and buy some mementos. We spent only about 30 minutes up top before heading back to Mürren for some hiking.

swiss travel pass schilthorn

There are trails that start from the top (below), but they are challenging, steep, alpine trails, not for little kids. If you want to do some hiking or extend your visit, instead stop in Mürren on your way back. There are many hikes in this area. For kids, I can recommend the Allmendhubel Flower Park  and  Children’s Adventure Trail . After your hike, your return ticket will still be good for the trip back from Mürren to Stechelberg.

Ride one stop down to Birg and follow signs to the “Thrill Walk.” The thrill walk descends metal stairs below the restaurant onto a walkway built into the side of the cliff. It’s totally awesome! One part of the walkway has a glass floor. If this is too scary, visit the more tame Skyline Walk, the observation deck outside the restaurant.

Another part has a suspension wire to walk across, with a safety net.

Frequently Asked Questions

We found this a good activity with our small children, who were too young for hiking. Our toddler was distracted and entertained by the changing gondolas every 10-15 mins. The main observation deck has a sturdy fence, making it safe for children.

The thrill walk at Birg is also relatively safe with good fences, though small children may find it scary. The Allmendhubel playgorund near Mürren is a great place for children to play after visiting the mountain peak.

The Schilthorn is much less expensive than the Jungfraujoch and has better views of the Eiger and Jungfrau peaks. We prefer it with kids because we can visit the great Allmendhubel playground afterwards. The Schilthorn area also has more hiking options than the Jungfraujoch/Kleine Scheidegg area.

However, from the Jungfraujoch, you can see the amazing Aletsch Glacier, explore an ice cave, and play in the snow in summer. This can be a special experience for those that have little experience with snow.

Best to bring a warm jacket since even in summer, it can be chilly at higher elevations. Plus the weather can change quickly.

If you don’t plan to hike, you can wear any comfortable shoe. In winter, the viewing platform will be covered in snow so wear waterproof footwear if possible.

You won’t need a stroller but if you bring it, you can get around as the Schilthorn complex is wheelchair accessible.

At the Schilthorn peak, there is a rotating restaurant with typical Swiss food (reservations available), as well as take away shops with snacks. There is also plenty of room to lounge outside and enjoy a picnic with a view.

Birg has a more casual self-service cafe for snacks and lunch. Murren has lots of restaurant options and a grocery.

If we are planning on hiking down, do they offer the option of buying a one way ticket?

Yes, you can buy a one-way ticket for any section.

Hello im plannig to go in August and i think i will arrive at interlaken ost from paris at 1 pm, do you think i will have enough time to go to the top from interlaken? also i would like to do the trill walk in Brig, so the best way is to visit first the top and then go to the cliff walk? in about 5 hours is enough to do this? many thanks!!

Hi. It will be a tight squeeze since the last cable car down from the Schilthorn is at 16:55. There is a train leaving from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunn at 13:05. If you catch this, you can get to the top of Schilthorn by 15:27, assuming you make all the connections and there isn’t a long line at Stechelberg for the Schilthorn cable car. So you would have very little time at the top. Yes, I would stop at Brig on the way back down to do the cliff walk. Good luck!

Hi there, Your blog is very interesting. My family is visiting Switzerland from 20 – 30 Nov. We were thinking to go up Schilhorn and try the thrill walk. We check the website and found out that during this period, the mountain would be under maintenance and will be closed…is it true.

Yes, many mountains close for maintenance between fall and the opening of ski season. This includes Schilthorn. You may be interested in my post about visiting the Swiss Alps in November. I haven’t updated the dates for 2019, but the information should still be helpful. https://swissfamilyfun.com/swiss-alps-november/

Thanks so much for posting this! I have been reading about all of these places, but was a little unclear how to link them together in a way that made sense. We are coming to Switzerland in August with a 2 and 4 year old, and will be spending time in/around Interlaken and in/around Zurich. Your website has been one of the primary websites that I have been using to plan our trip.

So much travel information on the internet lacks depth and details, so I really appreciate all of the specific details and diagrams/maps that you put into your posts.

Magic Switzerland

Mt. Schilthorn

swiss travel pass schilthorn

From the peak of Mt. Schilthorn you have the best panoramic view of the famous Jungfrau massif including Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The revolving restaurant at Piz Gloria serves delicious meals while you gaze at more than 200 other mountain peaks. With good visibility you may see as far as Germany’s Black Forest in the north and the highest mountain of the Alps, the Mont Blanc in the south.

The Schilthorn sits on top of the Lauterbrunnen Valley and is also famous for the James Bond movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.  Visitors will find an interactive adventure exhibition “Bond World 007” on top of the mountain and the “Thrill Walk” at the intermediate stop Birg. In summer you will find an exciting hiking region; in winter the highest skiing region anywhere in the Bernese Oberland.

Excursion to Mt. Schilthorn

Route from lauterbrunnen.

If you are not already in Murren you would start the day with a train ride from Interlaken, Wengen or Grindelwald to Lauterbrunnen. The Schilthorn loop starts with the cablecar up to Grütschalp from where you finish the last stretch to Murren via Mountain Railway. Now you walk through the car-free village of Murren until you reach the cablecar. From here you ascend to Piz Gloria on the Schilthorn summit. You would return back to Murren and then descend via cablecar to Stechelberg, from where you take the postal bus back to Lauterbrunnen.

Duration of excursion

The minimum time to visit Mount Schilthorn from Interlaken is half a day (5 hours). However we recommend taking more time and making it a full day excursion. There is also an extensive hiking path network around Murren. Many visitors of this fabulous mountain laud the 360° panoramic views, the 007 connections and the proximity to charming Murren. Starting in 2018 the excursion to Mt. Schilthorn will be included in the Swiss Travel Pass.

Operates year-round, from Stechelberg in 30-minute intervals. Maintenance 1 week in early spring, 3 weeks in late fall.

Preparation

Make sure to keep up with the weather and dress in layers. Note that it can be windy. Make sure to bring a wind breaker and be prepared for sudden change of weather. Bring sun glasses, a hat and gloves in the winter. Good walking shoes recommended.

Location and Map

Mount Schilthorn is located in the Bernese Oberland. It is 66km/41 miles from Berne and 12km/8 miles from Interlaken. Interlaken is 1.5 hour by train and to Berne it takes 2.5 hours.

which pass is best for schilthorn switzerland

Schilthorn is my favorite excursion in the Jungfrau Region, and you shouldn’t miss it when you’re around. I lived in the Jungfrau region (Grindelwald) for a year and visited Schilthorn at least 5 times , in summer and winter. For the first time, I went to Schilthorn as a tourist with my Swiss Travel Pass (which was still 100% included). Things have changed, and none of the Swiss Passes fully cover the excursion.

So, in this article, I’ll give you insights into which pass is best to visit Schilthorn, how to get there, and when to visit.

Let’s explore Schilthorn together!

No, Schilthorn isn’t covered by the Jungfrau Travel Pass; you’ll only get a 25% discount on a regular ticket for Schilthorn with the Jungfrau Travel Pass. It costs 81 CHF instead of 108 CHF (return ticket) for all Jungfrau Travel Pass holders.

Is Schilthorn Free With The Oberland Pass?

What Is The Best Time Of Day To Go To Schilthorn?

Morning, between 9 AM and 11 AM , is the best time of day to visit Schilthorn. The weather is usually better, and there are fewer clouds in the morning than in the afternoon.

There are also fewer people , and you might experience the inversion of clouds , which makes the entire experience even more unique .

WRAP-UP: Which Pass Is Best For Schilthorn?

This is how much the Schilthorn excursion costs with various Swiss passes. Berner Oberland Pass is generally the best travel pass to explore more things in the Jungfrau and Berner Oberland region . If you want to visit more of Switzerland and will travel a lot, the Swiss Travel Pass is the best option for you.

Schilthorn is my favorite excursion in the Jungfrau region, and I highly recommend you visit it. The views are breathtaking, and the entire cable car ride is amazing. So I’m sure you’ll love it, too.

Schilthorn Piz Gloria Questions & Answers

swiss travel pass schilthorn

we have a swiss travel pass. do we have to book our reservation for the cable car to schilthorn

swiss travel pass schilthorn

Dear ajayjain2018

Thank you for your question and the interest in our Schilthorn - Piz Gloria.

You don't need to make a reservation for the cable car. With the Swiss Travel Pass the whole journey to the Schilthorn and back is free.

If you don't want to wait in line you can purchase on our website a guaranteed departure time (CHF 5.00). Purchasing a boarding pass guarantees your chosen departure time. You will be able to board the cable car through a separate gate without having to wait in line.

If you have any other questions do not hesitate to contact us.

Best regards

Schilthorn Cableway Ltd.

swiss travel pass schilthorn

Hello, sure the pass covers everything. All you have to do is to present your pass at the counter to receive the Cable car pass.

swiss travel pass schilthorn

And as a clarification, the entire ride from Interlaken OST or West is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass. Everything!! So if you have a good day, like we did, take it and go! Great views of the other mountains as well from the top. So easy.

swiss travel pass schilthorn

I cannot edit my previous reply.

I meant saying: just do not know how much.

And yes, NO RESERVATION NEEDED for the cable car rides but the lines could be hilariously long!

Also be careful in getting in and out of the cable cars as it is quite shaky even on a halt/stop and there is a bit of a gap from the flatform.

It takes 4 cable car rides by the way in going up and the same in going down. It is all worth it though!

Not entirely free.

From Müren going up, you have to pay. Just do not exactly how much.

At the counter, show your Swiss Travel Pass and the cashier will charge you for the cable car ride from Müren going up all the way to Piz Gloria.

Note:The Swiss Travel Pass is just like having a "Swiss GA" which allows one to travel by train, bus, tram, cable car & ship without extra charge but not all the routes are covered, meaning, you need to pay for those that are not covered.

No reservation and it’s really easy. From the OST Train station take the train to Lauterbrunnen. The bus pickup is directly across the street from the train station. When the bus drops you off at the first cable car you need to show your pass to get a “scannable” ticket. Don’t loose it as you’ll been to scan it at every cable car off and on going up and down. Just follow the crowd.

swiss travel pass schilthorn

NO reservation needed with the Swiss pass. They just scan your pass. It’s easy and convenient. Swiss pass is the way to go, we definitely got our money’s worth

swiss travel pass schilthorn

But I just read most places that Shiltthorn is Free witb. Pass. BUT just read it only 50%. I have paid $98 with Get to our Guide for 2 tickets. I have time to cancel as we do have Swiss pass . Should I cancel ?

swiss travel pass schilthorn

NO, you don't. And with a Swiss Pass, your trip will be free.

swiss travel pass schilthorn

Not as far as i am aware, i just pitched up and got on next cable car going up.

It takes 3 cable car rides to get to Schilthorn, please note, it can get busy with skiers etc, allow enough time to get there and back.

I spent easily 4+ hours going up and down.

swiss travel pass schilthorn

Reservation for Schilthorn is not required. Swiss pass is valid throughout. On the way at Birg, you can explore "Thrill Walk".

swiss travel pass schilthorn

I got there and bought mine.
