Colonial Treasures of Mexico Tour

Colonial Treasures of Mexico

My wife and I along with three friends signed up the tour to Mexico from Indus Travel. The total 12-day Maya Culture trip really gave us opportunities to learn Mexico indigenous cultures thoroughly. We have seen a lot of ruins and pyramids, each of them has different representations and can tell the history of what was happening atthat time. We also had chances to visit the indigenous families toexperence the real Mexican people's life inthe rural area. The views of volcanoes, villages and canyons are also unforgettable. This is a small group with total 7 tourists, our driver/tour guide is a very experienced guide, Jose explained the history in sequence of events in and out. Most of all with 2500km driving he made us fell safe with his skills. All in all, this trip worths a 5+ star. I was so surprised that Indus Travel assigned a tour coordinator dedicated to our group, Kathlene helped a lot to make the arrangements for the whole trip, her prompt responses made us worry free.

Locations were excellent. Gabriella spent alot of time with me at age 75, traveling with 60 year old and 30 years old Mexicali men. She had to first speak Spanish, then English. She also took me where I was interested - political protests, Aztec Temple Mexico City. She changed schedule for me as late in afternoons I was worn out. Hotel Royal and Morelia had no English speaking staff most of the time. Hotel Royal, both rooms had mattress deflated in middle. I had trouble figuring 20 % tip based on $1800 tour cost using ATM. Told her I'd send to her when I returned home. My bank advised me against Western Union or some such device saying easily rigged. She was excellent for me, though.

Best Places To Stay In Jalisco

The state of Jalisco has so much variety with a lot to offer. Everything from beach towns, mountains, forests, jungles, big cities, small towns and pueblo mágicos.

Here are the best places to stay in Jalisco – covering the variety of experiences this beautiful state can give you.

📍 GUADALAJARA: The third largest metropolitan area in Mexico, Guadalajara (GDL) is a big city but much slower paced than Mexico City. GDL has a ton of cool bars, clubs, restaurants and malls. I’ll be completely honest, I enjoy Mexico City a lot more than GDL. However, I still think it’s a cool place to visit and there are a ton of cool areas near GDL for day trips or weekend getaways.

image of vibrant street with colorful flags in Tlaquepaque

It’s also a great destination for bachelorette/bachelor parties or just any group trip. They have trendy restaurants that are great for big groups, fancy clubs, beach clubs, a ton of bars, excursions, resorts, Airbnbs and other smaller towns to visit nearby.

I normally don’t like super touristy towns but PV still feels quite local and traditional to me. The Old Town known as “Zona Romantica” is really charming with its cobblestone streets and beautiful architecture.

➡️ Vallarta Shores Beach Hotel

📍 SAYULITA: As mentioned above, PV is a great hub to get to other smaller towns such as Sayulita. This once sleepy little surf town with mostly local travelers has now become a popular destination for foreigners. I’ll be honest, I miss what it was before. But nonetheless, it’s now a fun place to go with a lot of bars, restaurants and boutique shops.

image of street in the main square in Sayulita

The best way to get to Sayulita is by flying into Puerto Vallarta. The town is about an hour and 15 minutes drive from PV.

image of me on the beach in Sayulita

Pro tip: if you’re looking for a chiller vibe go to San Pancho which is a smaller beach town just 15 minutes away.

➡️ Ximena Hotel Boutique

📍 AJIJIC: You could definitely stay a weekend or a few days in Ajijic but this could also be done as a day trip coming from Guadalajara. This lakeside gem is located an hour away (by driving) from GDL along the shores of the largest lake in Mexico, Lake Chapala. Charming streets, laid-back vibes and beautiful lakeside views make Ajijic a perfect weekend getaway.

image of AJIJIC sign by Lake Chapala

➡️ Casa del Sol Inn

📍 MAZAMITLA: This mountain town Pueblo Mágico is the perfect nature escape. Spend your days in cozy mountain cabins, going on hikes during the day, and just enjoying nature all around you. I stayed at an amazing bubble glamping resort that was such a unique experience. Check out the link below!

I rode 2.5 hours on the back of a motorcycle to Mazamitla from Guadalajara (would not recommend it – too long for me on a motorcycle). If you take a car it shouldn’t take more than 2 hours unless you’re going around traffic hours.

➡️ La Estela Bub ble Glamping

image of bubble glamping in the mountains in Mazamitla

📍 SAN SEBASTIÁN DEL OESTE: Nestled in the Sierra Madre mountains, San Sebastián del Oeste is a quaint colonial pueblo mágico that makes you feel like you’ve taken a journey back in time.

The best way to get to San Sebastian del Oeste is flying into Puerto Vallarta and the drive from there should be less than 2 hours.

Tequila is a charming pueblo mágico (magic town) in Jalisco, Mexico. As you can see, they obviously have the best tequila tours in Jalisco being that it is known to be the birthplace of tequila.

image of me walking down a colorful street in Tequila

Is Tequila, Jalisco worth visiting?

Tequila is definitely worth visiting! Indulge in the breathtaking views of agave fields, go on a tequila tour, visit distilleries, try some local food, and enjoy the quaint cobblestone streets in this magical town.

image of guacamole, salsa and limes at a restaurant in Tequila

Where is the swing in Tequila, Jalisco?

The extreme swing is located just 10 minutes outside the town of Tequila.

What is the best month to go to Jalisco?

It really depends on where in Jalisco you plan to go and what you want to experience considering that Jalisco has beaches, mountains, big cities, and small towns. Generally speaking, the rainy season is around June to October. However, I’ve definitely been to Jalisco during this time without it raining but the summer months are really hot so for that reason, I would avoid it. It’s safe to say you’d be good to go around November to May.

Is it safe to travel to Jalisco, Mexico right now?

I’ve traveled to Jalisco several times by myself and I’ve generally felt safe. Is there cartel activity there? Yes. But I’ve traveled all of Mexico solo and with friends and I haven’t had any major issues. I feel like if you aren’t around certain situations or cause any trouble you should be fine.

Just like anywhere else in the world, practice safe measures and always be aware of your surroundings. (Don’t walk alone at night if the area is quite desolate, don’t flash your money or expensive things around, carry only what you need for the day, etc.)

The Best Tequila Tours to Take in Tequila, Mexico

Agave

The charming, rustic town that lends its name to Mexico’s national drink has become a major tourist destination in the past decade. Tequila was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006 and boasts a range of historic distilleries. Most of these are open to visitors, and we would highly recommend taking a guided tour if you visit the picturesque town.

Jose cuervo express.

The most famous tequila tour is without a doubt the Jose Cuervo Express , which leaves every Saturday at 9.00 or 9.30 a.m. from Guadalajara. After a scenic, hour-long trip in a mock-19th-century railcar, guests are welcomed at Jose Cuervo’s La Rojeña Distillery , which is the oldest in Latin America. Visitors are guided from the brick ovens where the agave is cooked right up to the oak barrels of the aging cellars. They are also given plenty of tequila shots along the way.

Experience Tequila

Cofradía turistico 360.

The hands-on tours offered by Hacienda La Cofradía are particularly memorable, giving guests the opportunity to explore the distillery, watch and learn from a jimador – or tequila farmer – and even unleash your creative side by decorating your own bottle in the ceramics factory. The hacienda also boasts a unique boutique hotel, Matices de Barricas, which has spacious rooms shaped like the oak barrels used to age tequila.

Matices de Barricas

Tequila Adventure

If downing tequila shots is not enough of a thrill, Tequila Adventure offers more action-packed activities. For under 800 pesos ($44), you can arrange to rappel down a waterfall or ride a horse through an agave field . The company also offers a guided tour of Los Azules Waterfall, a tour of the Rubio Distillery and a workshop where you make your own agave paper. An excellent option for visitors looking for something a little more unique and unusual.

Tour Tequila Orendain

For travelers on a budget, the Casa Orendain tequila company offers a tour of their distillery La Mexicana for only 195 pesos ($10.40). Less well-known than Jose Cuervo, Orendain is a family-owned Tequila group that was founded in 1926. The company now produces 10 different brands of tequila, and has collected various awards at international events. The tour provides a close-up look at Casa Orendain’s production process, as well as an opportunity to sample freshly distilled tequila, cooked agave and a few aged tequila shots.

Are you looking for the best tequila tours from Guadalajara?

Visiting the Tequila Valley in Central Jalisco state is one of the world’s great culinary experiences. Much like visiting the Champagne region in France or Chianti in Italy, the Tequila Valley is home to the origin story of one of the world’s most popular beverages. Additionally, there are beautiful landscapes, ancient culinary traditions, and cool drinking establishments all over the region.

I have lived in this area since 2009 and I want to help you craft a truly fulfilling tequila tour from Guadalajara with elements of history and culture.

These are the best tequila tours for every sort of traveler including transportation, expert knowledge, and artisanal tasting experiences.

Guadalajara is the capital of tequila country without a doubt. Tequila’s governing body, the Consejo Regulador de Tequila is located here. There is a whole industry of traditional cantinas, modern cocktail bars, and world-class restaurants. Most travelers will simply pass through the Guadalajara Airport and explore the city as they arrange transportation to the valley.

There are a lot of things to do in the Tequila area and some people will only spend one day in the Valley while others will spend a week. I want to help you have a good time in Tequila finding a unique experience for your preferred style of travel.

Best Tequila Tours from Guadalajara

There are a lot of different experiences to be found along the Ruta del Tequila. Some people are going to want to visit the best tequila brands using artisanal processes . Other people might be more interested in the scenic background for some Instagram reels.

My personal feeling is that the best option for Tequila is a self-guided tour renting a car and spending a week ‘puebleando’ hopping from one town to another visiting cult-favorite distilleries and staying in historic haciendas . There are some real luxury experiences to be found.

Not everyone has the time or the desire to drive around the backcountry of Jalisco. These day tours leave from Guadalajara and handle all of the transportation. Most of them offer hotel pickup and will return you back where you started.

1. Best of Tequila and Guachimontones Pyramids in One Day!

Tequila and Guachimontones tour from Guadalajara

⭐️  RATING:  4.92/5 Stars |   TOUR LENGTH:  8-10 hours |   BOOK NOW

If you only have one day for a tequila tour from Guadalajara then this is the tour to take. It is the best of the Ruta del Tequila in one day and the most cultural tour on the list. It is a full-day tour because that van covers a lot of ground. Depending on traffic the tour lasts anywhere from 8 to 10 hours.

Visiting the pyramids gives historical context to the tequila beverage. The original people treasured the agave plant and used it to create a plethora of tools, crafts, and carbohydrates. Aguamiel was extracted from the live agaves while cooked agave hearts were eaten and fermented.

The tour guides are an encyclopedia about the history of the region and the beverage. They will pick you up from just about anywhere in Guadalajara and show you two different sides of the Tequila Volcano. The tour starts early at Guachimontones when the weather is still cool. It is a little walk up a hill to get to the pyramids.

tequila tours tours

After the pyramids, the van heads to the public market in Tequila which is a great option for lunch. Each person can choose regional specialties from a number of different restaurants and food stalls. This is not included in the price of the tour but the prices are affordable. Just outside the market is the main plaza of Tequila where small kiosks sell tequila cocktails called cantaritos.

It is just enough time to see some of Tequila’s main landmarks like the national tequila museum before taking off for the tequila distillery tour. The last stop before heading back to Guadalajara is the traditional hacienda-looking factory with beautiful gardens.

At the end of the tour returns to where you were picked up at your Guadalajara hotel or hostel.

2. Mickey Marentes Tequila Tours

Cascahuin Distillery Tequila tour from Guadalajara

Small Group ⭐️  RATING:  4.92/5 Stars |   TOUR LENGTH:  8-10 hours |   BOOK NOW Private Tour Group ⭐️  RATING:  5.0/5 Stars |   TOUR LENGTH:  8-10 hours |   BOOK NOW

Mickey Marentes is a legendary tour guide around the tequila valley. He provides luxury tours for the real tequila connoisseur who wants to explore all the different types of tequila focusing on additive-free and artisanal tequilas.

tequila tours tours

  • Hotel pickup transportation
  • Two tequila distillery tours
  • Visit the agave fields
  • Tour Downtown Tequila
  • Artisanal tequila tasting
  • Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks
  • Lunch is included

The small group tour starts and ends in Guadalajara. He also offers a private tour that could arrange pickup anywhere in the Tequila Valley. The luxury tequila tour would stay at the Hacienda El Carmen boutique hotel for a few nights and arrange a private excursion to the most exclusive distilleries in the valley.

Both tours include round-trip transport from the city of Guadalajara to multiple distilleries, the enchanting town of Tequila, and photo stops to appreciate the agave landscape. There are high-end tequila tastings and professional-level explanations of the tequila-making process. There are a number of variations in the fermentation process and distillation, and aging in different types of oak barrels.

3. José Cuervo Express Tequila Train

tequila tours tours

The Jose Cuervo Express is one of the most luxurious ways to experience Tequila. One of only two operating passenger trains in Mexico, the Jose Cuervo Express is a living piece of Mexico’s history.

Every one of the club cars has been immaculately restored and is a testament to old-world Mexico. Jose Cuervo is famous for selling tequila but also for creating the Mundo Cuervo tourist attraction evoking the soul of Mexico. They are masters of marketing and the imagery is something you will remember for a lifetime.

There are several ways to plan your trip on the Jose Cuervo Express. One direction will be on the train and the other direction will be on a bus that stops at the Jose Cuervo agave plantation for a harvesting demonstration. You can choose to take the train to Tequila in the morning and return on the bus or you can start with the bus and return on the train.

tequila tours tours

The tequila-tasting portion of the trip is on the train and some people may prefer to drink earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon. They offer a wide range of house-made tequilas.

The day trip also includes a tour of the Jose Cuervo Distillery, La Rojeña, the oldest distillery in the region.

Mundo Cuervo often reminds me of an amusement park for adults. A lot of thought has been given to every detail and there is more here than you can see in just one day. No matter how many times you return to Tequila it is likely that you will find something new on the Mundo Cuervo campus like a beautiful garden, a museum, or even a concert venue.

4. The Agave Experience Premium Tequila Tour from Guadalajara

The best tequila tours from Guadalajara

Experience Agave organizes professional-level tours of agave-producing regions of Mexico. These experiences bridge the gap between beverage and culture, offering unrivaled access to the people and regions that gave rise to tequila and mezcal. The tour guides are some of the most educated agave enthusiasts in Mexico. Many of them have master’s degrees in tequila from the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara.

This is one of the highest-rated tequila tours from Guadalajara on the market today. They offer both small group tours and private tours and hadle all the transportation. You will visit two tequila distilleries, the agave fields, El Arenal, Amatitán, and Tequila.

  • Tequila tasting
  • Expert descriptions

In addition to tequila tours, there are also raicilla tours in Puerto Vallarta and mezcal tours in Oaxaca.

These tours are a good option for hospitality industry professionals with a cursory understanding of the spirits industry. They are going to trace the current state of the industry back to the origins of Mexico.

5. Camina GDL Tequila Full Experience

Camina GDL is one of the best tour operators in Guadalajara. They offer an excellent tour through the Tequila Valley visiting two different artisanal, additive-free distilleries.

The first distillery is set in the agave fields so you can see the harvest and learn about what makes the agave plant so special. They prepare and serve a rustic breakfast that is cooked over a bonfire which is followed by a tequila tasting.

The second distillery is in the heart of the Pueblo Mágico Tequila, Jalisco. It is one of the oldest tequila distilleries in Mexico. There is a beautiful tour that includes a three-course lunch and tequila tasting at a boutique hotel.

What the Camina GDL tequila tour includes:

  • Transportation, snacks, Guide
  • Entrance to the distillery
  • Tasting of 8 types of tequilas
  • Harvest and plant your own agave
  • Breakfast and tequila tasting in the agaves landscape
  • Lunch 3 courses and a cocktail

The folks at Camina GDL are a lot of fun. They know Jalisco really well and want to share the absolute best of the region with you. I guarantee you are going to enjoy their tequila tour.

6. Tequila Express Tour Bus

Not to be confused with the Jose Cuervo Express tequila train, the Tequila Express is a tour bus that provides round-trip transportation from the Camara de Comercio in Guadalajara to the Casa Sauza distillery in Tequila town.

There are several different packages depending on the food, beverage, and transportation style that you prefer. All the tours include a full-day tequila tour with a certified guide and a tour of the distillery and agave plantation.

Guests have plenty of free time to explore the magic village of tequila before heading back to Guadalajara.

Independent Tequila Distillery Tours

Distileria La Fortaleza in Tequila, Jalisco

There are a couple of different experiences to be found in Tequila, Jalisco. A lot of people are in town to drink cheap tequila and get wasted. On the other hand, I want to promote the cultural side of Tequila. There is a lot of history and refined culinary experiences if you do a little bit of research.

The best tequila distillery tours do not offer walk-up service. Reservations must be made in advance. Travelers are responsible for their own transportation and hotel accommodations. This is the best way to experience not just the town of Tequila but the whole Tequila Valley.

I recommend visiting at least one artisanal tequila distillery. If you have spent your whole life drinking commercial tequila, the tequila that is made at Fortaleza and Cascahuin will change your life. I still remember when I tasted a true tequila for the first time. It is a big part of why I am writing all these articles. I love good tequila.

7. Fortaleza Tequila Distillery

Tahona stone crushing agave for tequila

Calle Tabasco 153, Centro, Tequila, Jalisco // Website Contact

In my humble opinion, Tequila Fortaleza offers the most important distillery tour in Tequila, Jalisco. They are a boutique tequila producer making an old-fashioned product for aficionados.

The founder of Tequila Fortaleza comes from a long line of tequila makers that helped define the style of tequila and establish the regulatory counsel that protects tequila from cheap imitations. He is also at the forefront of the Renaissance in tequila making.

Fortaleza makes tequila using ancestral methods that are labor-intensive and time-consuming. They are going back to original production methods to make tequila like their grandparents used to drink before accountants and cost-cutting changed the recipes.

Tequila Fortaleza has created a boutique, distillery tour experience reminiscent of wine country. I highly recommend contacting them a week before your visit to see what they have available.

8. Fabrica de Tequila El Cascahuín

Independent tequila distillery tours from Guadalajara

Ferrocarril 140, San Juan de Dios, El Arenal, Jalisco // Facebook

Tequila Cascahuín is a small, independent distillery making some of the finest tequila in Jalisco. They are using old-school, artisanal methods of cooking, fermenting, and distilling. You should pick up a bottle of their high-proof tequila plata to bring back to the United States because you will not find it outside of Jalisco.

Before you visit one of the large, multinational distilleries you need to see how tequila was made in the old days. These guys are preserving the culture and traditions of a time long past.

9. El Tequileño Distillery

El Tequileño Distillery and tour.

Calle Chiapas 51, Tequila, Jalisco // Website Reservations

El Tequileño was founded by Don Jorge Salles Cuervo in 1959. Yes, that Cuervo. They have a boutique hotel on the back of their property and a nice tour that can be combined with a tequila tasting and lunch.

10. La Rojeña Distillery: Mundo Cuervo

tequila tours tours

José Cuervo # 73, Centro, Tequila, Jalisco // Website

When I was in high school I had a hand-me-down Jose Cuervo t-shirt that I adored. I think that everyone can agree that their marking department is one of the best in the world and they have the most famous tequila on the planet. The experiences that Jose Cuervo has created are some of the best things to do in Tequila, Jalisco.

As you would probably imagine, José Cuervo has a large footprint in Tequila. The Jose Cuervo La Rojeña distillery is the oldest distillery in Latin America with plenty of options for guided tours. In addition to the Jose Cuervo distillery, there are event spaces, hotels, restaurants, retail boutiques, and much more. The whole area surrounding the distillery is beautiful and very Instagram-friendly. They have done a good job preserving the colonial charm of rural Jalisco. Even if you don’t tour the Jose Cuervo factory you need to check out Mundo Cuervo.

11. Casa Herradura

Casa Herradura tequila tours from Guadalajara

Doña Gabriela Pena Lozada 405, Hacienda San José del Refugio, Amatitán, Jalisco

One of the world’s most recognizable tequila brands also has a stunning hacienda tour. When it comes to big-name tequila brands there are a couple of options for touring distilleries. You can take the train in from Guadalajara or you drive in and just take the walking tour. There are a couple of different price points depending on the tequila tastings that you are interested in. Honestly, the expensive tasting doesn’t seem necessary because I am not that into the añejo and extra añejo tequilas that cost a ton of money.

Jima agave harvest demonstration on tequila tour

Tours are in English and in Spanish but make sure to call ahead to get the schedule. Intermediate-level Spanish speakers will struggle to understand the technical vocabulary of the distillation process.

The Best Tequila Tastings in Guadalajara

Interestingly, it is more common to find classic cantinas that serve all the commercial tequilas and has a very small selection of artisanal tequilas from small distilleries. It is worth the effort to search out tequilas that are made without artificial flavoring and colorings.

Jalisco is the best place in the world to learn about the different types of tequila .

12. El Gallo Altanero

Guadalajara tequila tours

Calle Marsella 126, Colonia Lafayette, Guadalajara, Jalisco // Instagram

The first option is to make a reservation or head over to the Gallo Altanero tequila bar. They have one of the best agave programs in the world and host plenty of visiting bartenders learning about Jalisco’s historic agave culture.

Not only do they have an exceptional selection of different brands of tequilas but they know how to describe them and prepare them in cocktails. The Gallo Altanero was named one of the 50 best bars in North America in 2022 .

13. Mezonte: Destilados Mexicanos de Agave

Calle Argentina 299, Colonia Americana, Guadalajara, Jalisco // Instagram

Mezcal and tequila tours from Guadalajara

In addition to learning about just tequila, there is a whole world of agave-based spirits out there. Mezonte Destilados de Agave has classes about the cultural significance of the agave to the Mexican people. Pedro Jiménez, the owner, is an expert and has set up an NGO that promotes, supports, and preserves the production and practices of traditional agave spirits. Mezonte is more of a classroom and reservations are recommended. He also owns a bar called Pare de Sufrir where you can taste a WIDE variety of agave spirits.

14. Agüita Agaveria

tequila tours tours

Calle Marsella 167, Colonia Lafayette, Guadalajara, Jalisco // Facebook

Agüita Agaveria is not focused specifically on tequila but on agave spirits in general. They have a fine selection of hard-to-find tequilas from small producers and a respectable cocktail program. This is an excellent place to go for a tequila tasting.

I have learned a lot about the geography of Jalisco from the tequila-producing pueblos. It is fun to plan tequila tours to the pueblos that make your favorite tequilas.

Tequila Tours FAQ

What is tequila.

Tequila is Mexico’s national drink, but it is also the name of a volcano, a town, and even a region with 11 unique municipalities. Each municipality is a little town with cobblestone streets, a lot of charm, and hospitality. There are plenty of tequila distilleries throughout the region and many of these tours combine a distillery tour with some other cultural activity.

The beautiful blue agave fields are a designated Unesco world heritage site and a top destination in Mexico. The magical town of Tequila is the main attraction but there are a lot of different tours exploring Jalisco’s historic tequila culture.

Blue agave fields near Tequila, Jalisco

How far is Tequila from Guadalajara?

The town of Tequila is located 65 km (40 miles) from downtown Guadalajara. The fastest way to get to Tequila from Guadalajara is the toll road which takes just over an hour. The free road adds about 30 minutes to the drive but is more enjoyable because of the agave landscapes and pueblos along the way.

Stopping for tacos in Arenal or cocktails in Amatitan will be a highlight of the trip to Tequila.

Taking a bus or a train will be significantly slower than driving a car.

When is the best time to visit Tequila?

The best time to visit Tequila is in the fall after the rains have stopped and the agave landscapes are a vivid shade of green. The temperatures are mild and there is a lot going on in the region including festivals and fairs.

Winter is enjoyable too and most Canadians will laugh at what the locals call cold.

Spring is the hottest time of year when it can be uncomfortable to be outside without a had in the middle of the day.

Summer is the rainy season when it rains for a little while most days in the afternoon.

Where to Stay in the Tequila Valley?

Most of these day trips to Tequila do not require an overnight stay. However, the Tequila Valley has some spectacular accommodations.

Best Hotels in the Tequila Valley

My personal favorite is the Hacienda El Carmen boutique hotel. It is located on the other side of the Tequila Volcano right down the road from the Guachimontones archeological site. There is a tequila distillery on site and one of the most romantic hotels in Mexico.

📍 Luxury Option – Hacienda El Carmen Hotel & Spa

Is Tequila Safe?

Tequila, Jalisco is a very popular destination for international travelers. It is a pueblo mágico and a part of the UNESCO World Heritage program. There is a competent police force in the area and I can’t recall a major security issue that has made the international news.

The problem with safety in Tequila is alcohol-related. It is really easy to drink too much cheap or adulterated tequila and people can get out of control. Know your limits and know how to identify a bad situation.

Much like Napa Valley, Sundays are full of day trippers that should not be driving. Try to avoid being on the road on Sunday afternoon heading back to Guadalajara.

A Final Note on Tequila Tours from Guadalajara

I hope you found something valuable in this article that helps you make the most out of your time in the Tequila Valley. Remember, Tequila is more than just one pueblos. Tequila is the whole valley. There are amazing experiences to be found in this part of Mexico if you are willing to look.

83 reviews for Tequila Tour in the Mayan Jungle

Trey S – April 14, 2024

I recently went to Tulum to celebrate some family members’ birthdays. Our group was composed of people from the age of 30 to 72 years old. Our tour guide was great! Everyone enjoyed the snorkeling and the tequila tasting. The restaurant that the tour guide took us to had amazing drinks but the food could’ve been better. However, we went primarily for the snorkeling and tequila tasting (we stayed at an all inclusive so food wasn’t that important to us). As a result, I would highly recommend this tour and business!

Tulum and Tequila tour Before I discuss the tour, I have to say that the managers are very quick to respond to emails and all my questions. This made me feel more comfortable going with them. My wife and I did the Tulum tour with tequila testing. Our driver (Omar) and tour guide (Arturo) were on time at our resort. They are cery friendly and offered waters before we started. The drive to Tulum was about 1 hour. Omar is a very safe driver. We were literally the first ones to Tulum. This provided a great time to gets pics without other people in our photos. Avoided the heat as well. Arturo is very knowledgeable of the history. He took his time and did not rush us. He brought additional material to help explain the history of the mayan culture. Tulum is beautiful. Afterwards we went to lunch at a remote restaurant in the Dos Ojos park. After lunch we did the Mezcal and Tequila tasting. We enjoyed hearing the differences and being able to sample Tequila which is hard to find. We took naps in the way back as Omar drove. Overall a very pleasant day.

A truly unique experience! Looking at all the 5 Star reviews of Absolute Adventure Mexico it is difficult to add something new….other than to confirm previous 5 Star reviews. The company provided excellent service and immediate response from booking to the day of the tour. They used WhatsApp to stay in touch and response was always within minutes, sometimes immediate. Very impressive. The actual private tour was a fantastic experience. We were lucky to have Omar as a very safe driver and Arturo as a very knowledgeable and well prepared guide throughout the excursion. Arturo provided deep insights into the history of Tulum and the Mayan people in Yucatan and Central America. He was also the Tequila sommelier during the tasting experience. The choice of location was unique and away from the main tourist flows. It was clearly more than we expected and it is good to know that such great service still exists. They genuinely cared for us as their customers and that’s something rare these days. Bravo!

Karen – February 5, 2024

We took a private tour of Cenotes & tequila tasting. Had a great time. Our guide, Arturo, was awesome. He helped me overcome my fears & I got to experience things I never thought I could. My husband loved the tequila tasting. Got to try brands he never would have before. It was fun, educational & relaxed. We never felt rushed. Can’t recommend this group highly enough

Jen – February 3, 2024

Our tequila tour with Chris was exceptional! From the Tulum ruins to the tequila tasting, every moment was filled with knowledge and fun. Highly recommended!

Swim in a Cenote and Learn about Tequila We booked a cenote tour and tequila tasting with Absolute Adventures, and had a wonderful time! The entire staff is made up of consummate professionals, from the booking person, to the driver, to Arturo, our guide. They were all great, and so was the tour! The four of us had an awesome time snorkeling in a cenote, and we all left with much more knowledge about tequila than when we arrived! Awesome day all around, and would definitely recommend.

Shaun – January 11, 2024

We did the Cenote Tequila tour with Arturo. Our tour was phenomenal thanks to his expertise and upbeat attitude. Seriously, book with Arturo – you won’t regret it!

Alexis – January 11, 2024

Arturo was absolutely incredible! It was amazing that we could choose our own cenote and the private tour experience was just the best. We started our day with a private hotel, pick up where we decided which cenote we wanted to explore. After an amazing time swimming with a private snorkeling guide, Arturo, we had some free time before we headed over to our tequila tasting and lunch. The different types of tequila and Arturo is knowledge about the tequila was very impressive and I definitely found a newfound love and appreciation for tequila. I’ll highly recommend booking directly with them instead of through a third-party site as we found it to be a better price. I would definitely book with this group again and again specifically the private tours as it was one of the highlights of our trip.

Rose – December 12, 2023

100 out of 10! Arturo was our tour guide and Rodrigo was our driver. Not only was the driver very safe in transporting us about 1.5 hours from our resort to the cenotes, but the Arturo was an absolute trip! He was so informative and very easy to get along with. He was probably the best tour guide we have had and we made some unforgettable memories together as a family sand him leading us on our tour. Huge huge thank you to them both!

SG – June 25, 2023

This whole tour and our guide Arturo were amazing!!!! we did the private cenotes tour and tequila tasting. The cenote (we went to Niche Ha in Dos Ojos) was so insanely beautiful and Arturo did an amazing job of explaining everything to us, swimming around with us and taking as many photos of us as we wanted and generally being really patient with us. Afterwards we drove 5 mins to a gorgeous table for our lunch and tequila tasting that Arturo explained to us was a restaurant and a venue. He explained all the tequilas to us and we learned a lot. 10/10 recommend!!!! There wasn’t a moment that I didn’t feel safe or properly taken care of!

I recently had the pleasure of going on two incredible trips with Absolute Adventure, and I cannot recommend them highly enough. Our tour guide, Arturo, was absolutely exceptional, and he made our experiences truly unforgettable. Arturo’s extensive knowledge and passion for history brought the ancient Mayan civilization to life. Exploring the ruins was like stepping back in time, and Arturo’s storytelling made it even more captivating. After our exploration, we were treated to a delightful tequila tasting, where we learned about the different types of tequila and savored the distinct flavors. It was a perfect combination of cultural immersion and indulgence. Throughout both trips, Arturo’s professionalism, enthusiasm, and genuine love for what he does were evident. His ability to connect with the group and create a warm and welcoming atmosphere enhanced our overall experience. He was always willing to answer our questions, share fascinating stories, and ensure that everyone was comfortable and having a great time.

Michelle – May 27, 2023

We did the private tour of Tulum with lunch and a tequila tasting after. I cannot recommend this enough and I do NOT like tequila. We did this tour for my sister bc its her bday weekend and she loves tequila. I have no love for tequila, but Arturo, our guide, was fabulous. Not only did he know everything about Tulum and the Mayan culture, he was extremely knowledgeable about tequila as well. Honestly, he MADE the tour. He was , hands down, one of the best tour guides I have had.

ashley – May 19, 2023

BEST SNORKELING CENOTE AND TEQUILA TOUR IN TULUM We did the private cenote snorkeling tour and tequila tasting tour with Arturo & it was THE MOST incredible experience! We had a large bachelorette group and could not have asked for a better afternoon – we learned so much about tequila, had a gorgeous tour snorkeling inside the caves and a delicious lunch to top it all off. Arturo is an awesome guide and we couldn’t thank his whole team enough for an unforgettable experience! If you are debating booking a tour with this company, you won’t regret it!!!

Sydney – May 7, 2023

Best tour, tour Guide in playa del carmen! One of the best guides and drivers who made the cenote experience worth the time spent. Arturo our guide was extremely knowledgeable, articulate, considerate and inclusive in making sure everyone gets to feel the same way he feels when going through dos ojos cenote. More importantly kept everyone safe, did not rush to complete the tour. 5 star ⭐️ for sure. Plus the lunch and 6 rounds of tequila (tequila tasting) was part of the pack. You leave with a better understanding of both the cenote’s their impact to the environment. While having a good time with friends knowing more about tequila

Tequila Town – Get inspired Tourist Guide

Tequila Distillery Tours

Learn about the experience of walking through the fields of agave, and discover tequila experiences of making Tequila live.

Tequila Mexico in Agave Fields

From the bus window star seeing the agave field and if, by the way, the tequila scent would reach my nose, just be patient and the tasting should stray soon.  Get out of the bus hypnotized by the green color, take a walk among the agaves while your guide teaches to distinguish male plants from female ones (females grow a kind of flowers)

Tourists surround the guide, who tries to train your eyes to differentiate between a agave ready to cut and one that lacks maturity another 6 years. When we learned to identify them, he showed us how to get fucked (they cut 150 magueyes a day), and the bravest took the coa and cut the root of the agave until freeing the pineapple.

To continue our tour of the factory they gave us hearing aids, they put us equipment of security and sanity to continue with the route of the tequila Altos. As soon as we entered, the heat began to make their own, we walked through the safety zone and we saw, step by step, how this drink is made.

After they bring the pineapples they are fermented in large boilers for hours (we feel the heat and the strong smell that came from the fermentation), then we go to the cellar where they have the barrels, finally, we observe how they label the bottles and put them in boxes.

We tell you of 3 places where to live the route of the tequila and to cross its factories

To end our experience, we were given a tequila tasting, where they taught our senses to differentiate the types of tequila and to distinguish the flavor of Altos (which has a softer flavor), which is 100% handmade agave, which gives that soft tone, fruity aromas and herbal notes.

The Jose Cuervo Express train offers 2 new itinerary options to travel from Guadalajara to Tequila every Saturday of the year; traveling 60 km of agavero landscape. The experience includes the train trip from Ferromex to Tequila, the tour of the José Cuervo tequila factory and Mexican show.

The tequila tour begins with a tour on the train at Guadalajara Tequila, then the visit to the factory and the La Rojeña distillery, you are presented with a Mexican show, a lottery game on board the train, lunch type food, and a toast with the premium tequila.

You need to book 5 days in advance, and you can complement your experience with a tequila tasting, a chocolate tasting, and pack your own bottle. The entire tour lasts 12 hours.

What better way to start this unique experience than with a train trip from Guadalajara. Take Jose Cuervo Express, the only old-style train in Mexico that will take you to the magical town of Tequila. The trip includes tequila tasting, traditional cocktails, Mexican shows and typical games. You will also love the view of the beautiful landscapes of the blue agave fields.

The Jose Cuervo Express train will be dressed up in patriotic colors for a festive night, mariachi music, a Mexican dinner buffet and a cocktail bar. Celebrate the pride of being Mexican while traveling to the Magic Village of Tequila. Choose between two options to live the experience: Express and Premium

In the Express Experience you will make the trip by train and you can taste the cocktails of Casa Jose Cuervo. During the Premium Experience you will travel in the premium cars and enjoy the premium bar of the House. The dry snack is included. You will attend a magnificent Mexican party to be held at Hacienda el Centenario. There will be Mexican verbena, mariachi and live DJ, pyrotechnic games and Mexican buffet. Neglect, if you stressed too much, when you return aboard Jose Cuervo Express they will have ready-made food to get you down. The Express experience has a cost of $ 2,650 pesos per person and the Premium $ 2,950 (includes taxes). After an unforgettable Mexican night, take advantage of your visit to Tequila, Jalisco and stay at the best hotel in the region. You will have a preferential rate at Hotel Solar de las Animas which includes room superior category double, free access to the facilities: sauna, Sky Bar, Bar Chucho Reyes and swimming pool. In addition you will attend the concert of Dina Buendia, ambassador of Mexican music, on September 16. The price per room per night is $ 2,150 pesos (plus tax) for a minimum stay of two nights.

The magical town of Tequila, Jalisco, is world renowned for the production of the distillate to which it gives denomination of origin. The land of agave and jima is another gem to the west of Mexico and we want you to live it in all its splendor.

On this occasion we recommend 5 activities full of tequila tradition to discover the magic of the emblematic Jalisco region.

Arriving by train to Tequila, Jalisco Visit the oldest distillery in Latin America

La Rojeña is a distillery that has been producing tequila for over 250 years. Here you will witness the whole production process, from the masonry ovens for the cooking of the agave to the aging rooms where thousands of barrels are stacked. Know the history of the distillate in the National Museum of Tequila

Jose Cuervo

The house of the National Tequila Museum dates back to the time of Don Porfirio, at the end of the 19th century. The Museum has 5 permanent rooms: Room of origins that tells the pre-Hispanic history of tequila. The denomination of origin room, where you will know why the drink is unique in the world. In the room Industiral process will contrast the current production process and in its beginnings. Another room is the Classification of Tequila, which instructs on the types of tequila and variety in the region. The Arte Tequila room shows the 2 bottles awarded the Guinness record, being the largest in the world. You can not miss the gastronomic experience in La Antigua Casona

The warmth of the restaurant La Antigua Casona comes from its decoration and the aromas of its typical cuisine. Breakfast is buffet on weekends! The chef puts his stamp on every dish of the menu, whether regional with organic ingredients, contemporary Mexican haute cuisine or an international specialty. The bar of this restaurant serves a menu of cocktails based on tequila, wines, spirits, liqueurs and beers.

It is a premium aged 100% agave Tequila, aged for 24 months in American white oak barrels burnt and toasted in the Scottish style. Just to make your mouth water.

It has an amber colorcito with a slightly olive green hue. Its aroma is maple honey, vanilla, chocolate, hazelnut, wood, coconut and a slight smoky touch. When you taste it, you perceive a subtly acidic woody flavor, a little roasted oak and cooked agave. Have we convinced you?
