If you have a health condition or disability (particularly if you’re a wheelchair-user) finding an accessible toilet that’s clean, tidy and available for you to use can be a challenge. And they’re often kept locked.

Under Radar’s scheme, special locks are installed on public disabled toilet doors to give disabled people priority access. Local authorities have adopted the scheme and ‘Radar toilets’ can now be found in shopping centres, pubs, stores, bus/train stations and other locations nationwide.

How it works The Radar key gives you independent access to locked public toilets around the country. The provider of the toilet has a key – but with your own key there’s no need to wait for a member of staff to unlock the door. You’re in control.

For more information and to order your key online please click  here .

Low-Cost and Free Paint

The Derby Community RePaint scheme, which is managed by the Play and Recycling Centre (PARC), was created to help community groups, schools and people who are on low incomes, or in receipt of benefits, by providing affordable and usable leftover paint from commercial and trade sources.

It’s just £3 to register with the scheme and gain access to free and low-cost paint to decorate your home or premises.

Every litre of paint you obtain from this scheme would otherwise go to landfill, so whatever colour you choose it's green!

For more information about the scheme and to register,  visit the PARC website

Derbyshire Gold Card holders renewal reminder

Green SDDC landscape logo

Thousands of cards which entitle older people and those with certain disabilities to free off-peak local bus travel are due to expire in the next few months.

Derbyshire Gold Card  holders are being urged to check the validity dates on their cards, which can also be used to get discounts at some 700 shops and businesses and to borrow items from any county library.

Most Gold Cards are valid for five years, with around 108,000 of the 185,000 currently in circulation due for renewal soon – with the majority expiring in September and October 2017.

If you are an existing Gold Card holder who has not yet received a new one, and your card expires within the next two months, you can fill in an online form to  renew your Gold card .

Those without internet access can call the district council tel: 01283 595795 or visit the Civic Offices in Swadlincote.

Cllr Trevor Ainsworth, Derbyshire County Council’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure, said: “Cards are issued automatically when the personal information we hold exactly matches electoral data. Where we haven't been able to check this, card holders will have to renew themselves.

“It is simple to renew and hundreds have already successfully requested new cards. I would encourage others to follow this lead so they can continue to benefit from free travel and other discounts.”

The application form can be completed by Gold Card holders whose circumstances have not changed since they were issued with their current card, and disabled card holders who do not need to show continuing proof of eligibility.

Any card holder whose circumstances have changed since they were issued with their present card - for example those who have moved address within Derbyshire or changed their name - cannot apply online.

Online renewals can also be made at Derbyshire libraries, where staff can help if required.

First-time Gold Card applicants  will need to download and complete an application form.

Card holders who move out of Derbyshire are no longer eligible for a Gold Card but may still apply for the equivalent in their new local authority area.

Testimonials

To all at the shopping bus office, thank you all for the good work and the support you have given to me during the recent lockdown. For the bus drivers brining our food and essentials, and the office staff for taking down our shopping lists. Your thoughtfulness and kindness has been tremendous – Jacqueline

I cannot thank you enough for all your help and kindness during lockdown and your very welcome continued support. I am most grateful.

I would like to thank all staff who have helped during the lockdown. I have been most grateful from the staff taking my order to the staff delivering them and the kindness they have shown towards me. It’s been a very long time, but I am looking forward to being with you on Friday and for many more weeks in the future.

A great big thank you to you all for the help you give me. I really don’t know what I would do without you Once again a big thank you to you all. God Bless and keep safe.

Thank you all for your help during these bad times. A big thank you for keeping the bus going to Morrisions over these bad times from all of us

Wonderful. We always enjoy the trips.

..[The driver] is excellent driver, very helpful and considerate. Very scenic and enjoyable.

[We] wish to convey our sincere thanks to our driver [..] today. She was fantastic, cheerful, helpful and great with our residents, on behalf of them and all of the team. Thank you

We’d like to than your company and the driver for your usual high standard of efficient and pleasant service.

I just wanted to say that [driver] was an absolute pleasure today. He was prepared and extremely helpful, he couldn’t do enough for us. The trip was a real success, despite the weather, and the residents were so happy with [the driver] they wanted to do a collection.

Thank you for your invaluable service over the years. …Your service and care has been fantastic – thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

The driver was very kind and considerate, helping in every way he could. Even though the weather was a bit iffy, we still were able to have an enjoyable day as always.

Our driver .. was so helpful to everyone – so amiable and patient. He made our day out very enjoyable

I use the community bus every Monday from my home to Tesco’s. I want to tell you how this is of benefit to me and others on the bus who depend on your staff to help us, which they do. We are all elderly and with wheelchairs and walking sticks. I …. need help on and off the bus as do many others. One driver gets our shopping trolleys and points us in the right direction, whilst the other driver is getting our wheelchairs and walkers off the bus. At home they walk us to our front doors an carry our shopping inside for us we wouldn’t be able to do this ourselves. All this is done with smiles and jokes

They don’t just take us and dump us! They really look after us.

Just a small token of our appreciation for all the help you have given us over the recent lockdown. Making sure we were OK and also well fed.

Enjoyed the outing very much. Thank you. I look forward to some more.

It was very enjoyable. I always enjoy these days out and your drivers are always so helpful and friendly.

Excellent. Good driver – nothing too much trouble.

Most enjoyable trip and excellent value for money.

Thank you so much for all your help and concern over these last months, you truly have been a lifeline, from your wonderful office staff to the to the bus drivers and helpers.
