Word of the day, tour de force.
a feat requiring unusual strength, skill, or ingenuity.
More about tour de force
Tour de force “a feat requiring unusual strength, skill, or ingenuity” is a borrowing from French, in which the phrase literally means “turn of strength.” French tour has two separate derivations: the noun tour “a turn” in tour de force is related to the verb tourner “to turn” (from Latin tornāre ), and this tour is not to be confused with tour “tower” (from Latin turris ). This distinction is why the Tour de France refers to a long, winding bicycle race while the tour Eiffel is the original French name for the Eiffel Tower. Other derivatives of Latin tornāre “to turn” include return , tourniquet , tourist , and tornado . Tour de force was first recorded in English circa the year 1800.
how is tour de force used?
“The idea that nature is not bound by the artificial boundaries that we assign to physics, chemistry, biology or mathematics has been around a long time,” said astrophysicist Mayank Vahia …. He said the Nobel prize in physiology and medicine shared by Jim Watson, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins, for instance, for unraveling the double helix structure of DNA, might not have been won but for the technical (read physical) tour de force of X-ray diffraction studies achieved by Rosalind Franklin and her colleagues.
A tour de force from 1938, by the German-born Argentine Annemarie Heinrich in league with her sister Ursula, finds the two reflected in a mirrored orb. In the background—from our point of view—Annemarie grins as she snaps the shutter of a standing camera; Ursula looms gigantically and wildly distorted as she leans forward to grasp the sphere. It takes time, enjoyably, to puzzle out the picture’s vertiginous structure.

the arc of the horizon measured clockwise from the south point, in astronomy, or from the north point, in navigation, to the point where a vertical circle through a given heavenly body intersects the horizon.
More about azimuth
Azimuth “the arc of the horizon measured clockwise” derives by way of Middle French azimut from Arabic as-sumūt “the ways,” an assimilated plural form of al-samt “the way.” As we learned from the recent Word of the Day acequia , the prefix al- “the” assimilates to match the first sound in the word that follows—but only when that sound is pronounced with the tip of the tongue. Azimuth shares an origin with zenith “the point on the celestial sphere vertically above a given position,” but while azimuth closely resembles its Arabic source, zenith arose when Arabic samt was borrowed into Old Spanish as zemt and was subsequently misread as zenit . We never know when a small scribal error can end up creating a new word! Azimuth was first recorded in English in the late 14th century.
how is azimuth used?
While we say that the sun sets in the west, most times that’s not exactly the case …. [B]etween the first day of spring and the first day of autumn, the position on the horizon where the sun appears to set, known as the azimuth , actually occurs somewhat north of due west. The azimuth of the sunset slowly shifts northward until the day of the June solstice; thereafter, it reverses course and shifts back to the south. On June 21, the sun sets at an azimuth of 302 degrees, or 32 degrees north of due west. But for the setting sun to be seen from all of Manhattan’s cross streets, its azimuth must be 299 degrees, or 29 degrees north of due west.
an act or instance of fighting a shadow or an imaginary enemy.
More about sciamachy
Sciamachy “an act of fighting a shadow” is adapted from Ancient Greek skiamachía , equivalent to skiá “shadow” and máchē “battle.” Skiá is sometimes romanized as scia- , consistent with the Latin trend of changing Greek kappa to Roman c , but other derivatives of skiá in English hew closely to the original spelling and appear as skia- , as in skiagraph “a photographic image produced by the action of x-rays or nuclear radiation.” Máchē is a popular element in technical terms related to fighting or warfare. When combined with taûros “bull,” we get tauromachy “bullfighting,” and when combined with lógos “word,” we get logomachy “a dispute about or concerning words.” Sciamachy was first recorded in English circa 1620.
how is sciamachy used?
As farewells were played, Order became disorder And sciamachy took root. In the dark place, where mirrors Refracted black light Breathing became ragged. … And, I, cannot now Recognise a face. There is but a record Of a dark place.
Aru is indulging in sciamachy . She has the frustrated look of a person combating a shadow, a shadow that absorbs her anger and gives her nothing in return. As for me, it was not only her questions that daunted me, it was her look as well, the clear-eyed, judging gaze…

What is the Tour de Force 9/11 Memorial Bike Ride
From the beginning.
The “Tour de Force” was started in 2002 after NYPD Det. Robert De Paolis (ret) decided to ride his bike to honor the fallen police officers that gave their lives in the September 11, 2001 attacks. He was then joined by 7 other members of the NYPD and one member of the Bronx District Attorney's Office and along with four volunteer support personnel, they cycled their way from the Pentagon in Arlington, VA, to Ground Zero, NYC.
In 2003, the Tour de Force was incorporated in the state of New York as a nonprofit charity and later gained 501(c)3 status from the IRS.
History of the Tour
The Tour de Force has evolved into a four-day, 280 mile ride, in which 300 law enforcement officers from across the U.S. and abroad, along with some family and friends, participate to raise funds for the families of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. Each participant, support team member and staff, raise funds and put in a lot of work throughout the year to make this event a huge success.
The Charity
The fundraising supports the families of fallen police officers.
The ride is a 4 day ride.
We remember the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorists attacks.

“SYTYCD” Week 8 Recap: A Tour de Force With T-Pain
It’s been the year of blockbuster tours, from Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour to Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour. But what would tours be without dancers?
This week, the “So You Think You Can Dance” dancers were asked to take their show on the road and take on the challenge of dancing on tour. “International tours are a billion-dollar industry,” said longtime host Cat Deeley. “And while it’s the headliner that makes the headlines, any superstar will tell you that it’s their dancers who keep the energy going in their performances.”
So how did our top 5 fare in their tour de force performance? Let’s find out.
We’ve made it to the top 5, everyone! And these crazy-talented dancers are all one week closer to becoming America’s Favorite Dancer. They’ve taken on music videos, musical theater, movies—and in last night’s episode, they took on tours.
The dancers were joined by two iconic choreographers: Fullout Cortland and Kyle Hanagami. Between them, these choreographers have worked with everyone from SZA to Justin Bieber—which is to say, they’ve worked with everyone . And the dancers also had a shot to work with another incredible artist, T-Pain!
Each dancer was asked to perform both routines. That means two sets of choreography, two sets of rehearsals, and two performances, all in one week. This is the big leagues, folks!
The dancers jumped straight into rehearsals for Fullout’s hip-hop performance and Kyle’s contemporary routine. Fullout picked Mariyah Hawkins for an extra-special front-and-center moment with T-Pain, and the pressure was officially on.
Madison might be in "T-Pain" but she's not letting this injury hold her back from fighting till the end 💪 #SYTYCD pic.twitter.com/P9G6zJd9gr — So You Think You Can Dance (@DANCEonFOX) May 7, 2024
In Kyle’s rehearsal, the pressure was just as intense, and it seemed to get to Madison Rouge Alvarado a little bit, who hurt her hip during a run-through. But she said, “Even if it was hurting, I would not allow it to affect my dancing.” We love the drive, but please, dancers, take care of yourselves. Dancing through the pain is not a flex, we promise.
Finally, it was time for the performances. And lo and behold, T-Pain finally arrived at the “SYTYCD” studios! The dancers performed Fullout’s routine alongside T-Pain and absolutely brought the house down. There was a quick minute for a quick change, and then it was time for Kyle’s routine.
These dancers literally light up the stage with their talent 💡 #SYTYCD pic.twitter.com/ZJNyupSx2A — So You Think You Can Dance (@DANCEonFOX) May 7, 2024
The judges were impressed by both performances and they had feedback for all of the dancers. Madison got a shout-out for dancing on her injured hip (which we have mixed feelings about), and judge Maksim Chmerkovskiy told Dakayla Wilson that she was the absolute standout of the performance. In the end, both Madison and Dakayla were revealed as safe, leaving Easton Magliarditi, Mariyah, and Anthony Curley to dance for their lives and another week in the competition.
Easton's solos NEVER disappoint 🤍 #SYTYCD pic.twitter.com/Stx9rkw2Gh — So You Think You Can Dance (@DANCEonFOX) May 7, 2024
Easton’s solo was amazing, as always, and Anthony delivered on a routine that showed the judges his range. But Mariyah struggled again with dancing outside of her comfort zone, and, in the end, the judges chose to send her home. “This has been such a beautiful experience, and I did exactly what I came to do,” she said.
After another elimination, only four dancers remain in the competition. Who do you think will be the last one standing onstage?

The Timberwolves Are Squeezing the Life Out of the Nuggets

On a spectrum of visibility, defense in modern basketball falls somewhere between the panic-inducing speed and punishing force of football and the algorithmic erasure-by-numbers of soccer. Every possession in basketball has a higher probability of yielding points than in any other team sport, so the viewer’s mind paces itself. We look for punctuations and aberrations. End points that affirm or deny the intentions of a defense. A weak-side rejection from the low man; a block from the darting rotational defender closing out on the corner; a strip-block from the mouse in the house, whose reflexes are faster than the post player’s offensive navigation system. Moments, few and far between, that turn the improbable into the ecstatic. For the most part, that’s all one can truly hope for.
Great offenses operate like superorganisms, with a flow that can be impossible to decipher from the opposing perspective; great defenses come in crashing waves. But on Monday, in the most stunning statement win of the postseason thus far—a 106-80 rout of the defending champion Denver Nuggets at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves—the Wolves posited the inverse. They were a defensive man o’ war , operating as a unit at the same frequency and velocity, their offense a side attraction, a finishing blow. With presumptive Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert unavailable due to the birth of his first child, the Wolves pieced together one of the greatest collective defensive performances of the past two decades. It’s exceedingly rare for defense to be rendered as anything other than rigorous and thankless labor, but on Monday it almost felt like joy. It looked like it, too:
Nickeil Alexander-Walker smiling defense pic.twitter.com/6tThAJeDNQ — Timberwolves Clips (@WolvesClips) May 7, 2024
But defense is a zero-sum game. Joy on one end means agony on the other. Nikola Jokic, who will probably be named MVP on Wednesday, had one of his worst playoff performances in years. Jamal Murray was so flustered he threw multiple objects onto the court from the bench, including a heat pack that was tossed in a referee’s vicinity—which probably ought to yield disciplinary action. While I realize I’m prone to hyperbole, calling the Minnesota defense transformative doesn’t feel like much of a stretch. The intense ball pressure from the Cerberus that is Jaden McDaniels, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and Anthony Edwards; the swarming length and discipline of Karl-Anthony Towns, Naz Reid, and Kyle Anderson—in concert, the Wolves threw the Nuggets into an unfamiliar state of dysregulation. One of these teams just won a championship, and the other hasn’t sniffed the Western Conference finals in two decades. You’d be forgiven for mixing them up.
Jokic, the most creative big man to walk on hardwood, couldn’t cast any spells through such tight windows. Nor could he default to Occam’s razor ball down low, where he was stymied by Reid and Towns, who both put in arguably the most impactful defensive performances of their lives. Murray, hindered by a strained left calf, was in absolute hell trying to get any step past the Wolves’ hellhounds. His and Jokic’s legendary pick-and-roll was blockaded; Denver didn’t trust anyone else on the team to be a second-side creator; the players couldn’t even swing the ball around the perimeter without feeling the squeeze.
“You can’t play Nuggets basketball if you get punked,” Denver guard Reggie Jackson said after the game. Part of what made Monday night so astonishing was watching the Nuggets’ composure wither so quickly. Jokic found new depths to how low his shoulders could slump; Murray’s exasperation manifested as the petulance of a sleep-bound child; and the supporting cast vacillated between anxious frenzy and utter resignation. The sense of inevitability Denver had against the Lakers melted under a crucible in real time. Charitably, it was, in a way, a warm welcome for new Broncos quarterback Zach Wilson: You won’t be the only athlete in town that’s seen ghosts .
The league's top-ranked defense just put on an absolute CLINIC in Denver. 11 STL 12 BLK 34.9 OPP FG% @Timberwolves go up 2-0! pic.twitter.com/8ijLOs8yyX — NBA (@NBA) May 7, 2024
Wolves head coach Chris Finch watched his team approach perfection from a row behind his usual perch, ceding play-calling duties to acting head coach Micah Nori as he recovers from knee surgery. Normally even-keeled with regard to his team’s performance, Finch showed an unmistakable pride in what his team accomplished in Game 2. “We’ve had some really, really good defensive efforts this year, but that has to be right up there with the best of them,” the man known as Finchy said after Monday’s demolition. “On the ball, off the ball, the physicality, execution of the game plan, doing it over and over and over again. It requires a physical and mental toughness—they had that.”
Gobert’s absence, which was assumed to be a net positive for the Nuggets before tipoff, highlights the disparity that has defined this series as Denver trundles up to Minneapolis down 0-2. Watching the Denver offense bury itself in quicksand, it was hard not to think about Bruce Brown’s sterling postseason run last year—the one that netted him a two-year, $45 million contract in the offseason. The pining is less about Brown himself than what he represented within the Nuggets offense: A fearless, athletic ball handler who is capable of attacking from the fringes of Denver’s pet actions. A release valve. A reinforcement of structure that can also make hay outside of it. The Nuggets simply do not have a bench they can trust, and with the threat of Murray neutralized, Jokic only has so many levers to pull with the rest of the team. That’s an enormous issue. Teams in the postseason can pare back, but they can’t add to what isn’t there. The Nuggets have no clear way to address the Wolves’ superiority in terms of athleticism or depth.
Monday night felt like a new nadir for the defending champs. But it could get worse. It remains to be seen whether Murray will face any discipline for tossing the heat pack onto the court, and if it does lead to suspension, the only other point guard on the roster is Jackson, who left Game 2 with an apparent lower-leg injury. The Nuggets are held together by Jokic’s gravitational pull, and the team’s unique build and complementary skill sets are a feature rather than a bug. But the roster is full of play finishers and growing more and more devoid of secondary playmakers—and you can’t finish something that isn’t even being allowed to start. The Nuggets have ailing bodies up and down their roster, but ceding physicality is as good as ceding the rest of the series. With a compromised Murray, Denver will need Jokic to go against his natural order and double the number of shots he took in Game 2. Of course, that’s not necessarily a recipe for success, either: Jokic has attempted at least 25 field goals in 14 career playoff games; the Nuggets won only four .
Game 2 as a whole felt like a tribute to Gobert’s impact, and a shedding of lingering reputations both on an individual and team level. The numbers quaintly paint the picture. KAT and Edwards each scored 27 points, as if to honor no. 27; they combined for 21-for-32 shooting from the field, which comes out to 65.6 percent—almost identical to Gobert’s career field goal percentage. “Rudy’s driven a defensive culture here,” Finch said after the game. “I think it’s a testament to his impact, his presence, and what he’s infused into the team on how important defense is and how great we can be when we play it.”
This is the standard that Gobert has set all season—his fingerprints were all over the game, even if he was hundreds of miles away. “We got a lot of guys that I can sleep peacefully knowing they can guard those guys and make their life hard,” Gobert said back in January .
Well, he’s half-right. The Wolves have assembled one of the best defensive collectives we’ve seen in the past quarter century. On Monday, they served a masterpiece to bring the series home up 2-0, all as the team’s newest father watched from afar. But I have some news for you, Rudy: You’re not going to have a good night’s sleep again for years .

A ‘blistering’ ‘tour de force’: australia loves after the party too.
- Share Story
International audiences are starting to discover what New Zealand already knew about After the Party.
When After the Party aired in New Zealand last year, the response was fast and furious. In his preview for Rec Room, Duncan Greive said it was a “ gritty, wrenching and highly confronting ” series. By the end of the season, we called it “the best TV drama we’ve ever made ”. Everyone seemed to be watching it at the same time, a rare feat in a world of non-stop streaming, with audiences gripped by the devastating fallout that takes place after Wellington teacher Penny (an incredible Robyn Malcolm) accuses her husband Phil (Peter Mullan) of a sex crime.
Now the rest of the world is also discovering how good After the Party is. Last month, Robyn Malcolm won a best actress award at the Séries Mania Film Festival in France, the first time a New Zealand television entry had been considered at the festival. Shortly afterwards, esteemed entertainment magazine Variety called Malcolm’s character Penny one of “ TV’s most beloved anti-heroines ”, comparing her to iconic characters like Kate Winslet’s Mare from Mare of Easttown and Frances McDormand’s Olive Kitteridge.
Australia also fell for After the Party when it screened on ABC at the end of last month. Co-creators Malcolm and Dianne Taylor told The Spinoff they were unsure about how the show would be received, with executive producer Helen Bowden revealing that she’s often frustrated by the lack of interest in New Zealand movies, TV, books and art across the ditch. Having seen French audiences respond with such enthusiasm at Séries Mania, the trio hoped Australians would connect with the series too.
And connect with it, they did. After the Party has garnered glowing praise in every Australian review, and Malcolm, Taylor and Bowden are astonished at the overwhelmingly positive response. “People are loving it,” Bowden says. “As a Kiwi living in Australia, and producing TV here for 30 years, getting such a passionate response to my first New Zealand show is an absolute thrill. The numbers already tell us that it is going to be huge over here.”
The series has resonated with Australian audiences just as strongly as it did in New Zealand. “The thing that’s blown me away is how much people just want to talk about it,” Taylor says. “The week-by-week episode drop on TVNZ helped build the conversation here, while in Australia all the eps went up online at once, but it’s having the same effect; one reviewer called it a ‘water-cooler’ drama, which I love.”
Plus, “no accent jokes in sight!” Malcolm reckons. “We truly didn’t expect it.”
At a time when New Zealand stories on screen are under threat , here’s exactly what the Australians have been saying about After the Party.
The Guardian (⭐⭐⭐⭐): ‘This great performance ranks among the best television portrayals in years, from anywhere in the world.’
After the Party was executed with a “white knuckle intensity” that swept viewers away, according to this rave review . “No one impresses more than Malcolm, who really gets under your skin and pinches you from the inside,” The Guardian’s Luke Buckmaster wrote. “The anguish she feels for being alone in her beliefs makes her increasingly desperate; watching Malcolm illustrate her reach and reach and reach is exhilaratingly painful.”
It ends with this absolute banger: “It’s no overstatement to say that this great performance ranks among the best television portrayals in years, from anywhere in the world.”
Sydney Morning Herald (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐): ‘Malcolm is astonishing’
“There are no heroes in this complex tale, and each episode throws up more doubt and questions,” reviewer Kylie Northover wrote , noting how rare it is to see a “ballsy-middle aged woman” on our screen. “Malcolm is astonishing as a woman determined to seek justice, even as her behaviour affects her job and starts to alienate her closest friends and her own family. It’s disappointing that her portrayal of a complicated middle-aged woman often seen without make-up or styled hair, remains noteworthy; not since Kate Winslet in Mare of Easttown has someone in a TV series looked so … real.”
TV Tonight (⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2): ‘ An uncomfortable but utterly compelling ride’
Malcolm’s “tour de force performance” is compared to Sarah Lancashire’s Catherine Cawood from Happy Valley in this TV Tonight review , while her co-star Peter Mullan also is recognised with fierce praise. “ In Robyn Malcolm Penny is a firebrand central character who performs with searing conviction, superbly matched by Peter Mullan who goes toe-to-toe in riveting feuds. You could watch it for this alone and be satisfied,” they write.
Mediaweek (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐): ‘ One of the best dramas of the year’
Mediaweek’s review notes that Malcolm is no stranger to Australian screens , but that New Zealand dramas have always been “treated with contempt by Aussie programmers”. After the Party appears to have changed all that. “This is one of the best dramas of the year — 5 stars”.

Screenhub (⭐⭐⭐⭐): ‘ Australian drama could learn a thing or two’
In a review that made everyone in Summer Bay sit up straight, Screenhub noted that New Zealand TV content has surpassed early “sub-par” expectations and is now outshining Australian efforts . “Smartly observed, sharply told, and with a brace of convincing performances, it’s a family drama wrapped around a mystery, telling a story that’s satisfying on both levels. Australian drama could learn a thing or two.”
After the Party streams on TVNZ+. It will screen on Channel 4 in the UK later this year.
