Resetting the MPG indicator
- Add to quote
I was wondering if someone can tell me how to reset the MFG indicator on my 2019 Limited 'Trek? I was only getting 21.7 MPG with my Thule XT Canyon basket mounted. I removed it just before going on a 800 mile road trip. My 'Trek is pretty stock other than the Curt Trailer hitch I installed and my 15x7 Black Rhino wheels and BFG KO2's (215/75/15) Although we had it packed full of gear and two e-bikes on the hitch mount bike rack, I would've thought my MPG reading would've improved???
Not sure where to start... 😸 The car's display is inaccurate and usually optimistic. Try searching for MPG posts...

Simply reset your trip meter A or B and your car will begin a new calculation going forward.
I'm wondering if the OP is having trouble locating the trip reset button. It's hiding behind the steering wheel toward the left.
Thanks guys! Just got back from a vacation and haven't had a chance to check out my post! So resetting my trip reset button will clear the "MPG" average readout? (It stays on 21.6) I was averaging 24.8 mpg's. I feel like it should be better than that as I took off my Thule Canyon XT basket. I have driven it at least 1k miles since I took it off. Thanks for your thoughts!

Yeah, I figured they were optimistic. I am running 15" Black Rhino wheels with 215/75/15 BFG KO2's. I was getting around 24.3 MPG's with them mounted, before I put the roof basket on.
Thanks guys! I reset it through the trip reset button. I appreciate all of your help!

It is reset when you reset your TRIP odometer in the gauge cluster. That is showing your average for the A trip odometer.

Odometer and trip meter explained: their functions in your vehicle.
Your vehicle’s odometer tracks the total distance traveled, important for maintenance and predicting breakdowns. It impacts resale value and longevity. In contrast, the trip meter measures specific distances for fuel efficiency and business miles. Resetting it doesn’t affect the main odometer. By monitoring trip distances, you enhance efficiency and expense tracking . Use trip meters to differentiate personal and business trips. Remember, trip meters are resettable and ideal for short-term tracking. Utilize trip meters for timely maintenance and cost-effective travel. Understand these functions for effective vehicle management and performance optimization.
What You Need to Know
- Odometer tracks total distance traveled for maintenance and resale value.
- Trip meter measures specific trip distances independently for efficiency calculations.
- Odometer focuses on long-term mileage, while trip meters detail individual journeys.
- Monitoring trip distances enhances vehicle efficiency and expense tracking.
- Use trip meter for maintenance reminders, fuel consumption, and expense optimization.
Importance of Odometer in Vehicles
The odometer in your vehicle serves as an essential tool for accurately displaying the total distance traveled by your car. It plays a critical role in vehicle maintenance by tracking the overall mileage, aiding in monitoring service intervals and oil changes.
Understanding the mileage tracking provided by the odometer is important for ensuring your vehicle runs smoothly and efficiently. By keeping a close eye on the mileage displayed, you can stay on top of maintenance schedules, preventing potential breakdowns and costly repairs.
Then, when it comes to selling your vehicle, a well-maintained odometer with accurately tracked mileage can greatly impact its resale value . Hence, regularly checking and recording the mileage shown on your odometer is key to keeping your vehicle in top condition and maximizing its lifespan.
Proper utilization of this mileage tracking feature won’t only benefit your vehicle’s performance but also its value in the long run.
Functions of Trip Meter
When utilizing your vehicle’s trip meter , you can independently track specific distances for various purposes. Trip meters provide important measurements of the distances traveled on separate trips or segments of a journey. They’re handy for calculating fuel efficiency and monitoring mileage tailored to different needs.
Resetting trip data on the meter doesn’t impact the main odometer reading , allowing you to start afresh whenever necessary. This feature is beneficial for tracking business mileage , personal trips, or adhering to maintenance schedules based on specific distances you cover.
Ensuring trip meter accuracy is essential for obtaining precise data for your tracking needs. By resetting trip data appropriately and verifying the accuracy of the recorded distances, you can rely on your trip meter to assist you in managing your travels efficiently.
How Can Understanding Odometer and Trip Meter Functions Help Me Save on Gas Expenses?
Understanding your vehicle’s odometer and trip meter functions is essential for saving on gas expenses in America . By keeping track of your gas mileage and planning your trips accordingly, you can optimize fuel efficiency and minimize unnecessary driving. This can lead to significant savings on gas expenses in America.
Difference Between Odometer and Trip Meter
Understanding the distinction between an odometer and a trip meter is essential for effectively tracking your vehicle’s mileage and journeys. The odometer accuracy is vital as it measures the total distance your vehicle has traveled since it was manufactured or since the last reset. On the other hand, trip meters offer precise measurements for specific distances or trips, like Trip A and Trip B , enabling you to monitor short-term distances with great precision.
Odometers are typically used for long-term mileage tracking , providing an overview of your vehicle’s overall usage and history. Resetting trip meters doesn’t impact the total odometer reading, allowing you to track different trips separately. While odometers focus on the big picture, trip meters delve into the details of individual journeys or distances.
Benefits of Monitoring Trip Distances
Enhancing vehicle efficiency through precise trip distance monitoring is essential for effective management and optimization. By tracking your trip distances, you can accurately monitor business travel expenses and calculate fuel efficiency . This tracking method allows for better vehicle management , as you can schedule maintenance based on specific trip distances traveled. Then, using separate trip meters provides a convenient way to differentiate between personal and business trips, aiding in expense tracking .
Monitoring trip distances not only helps in expense tracking but also plays an important role in evaluating overall vehicle efficiency and performance. By keeping a close eye on your trip distances, you can make informed decisions to enhance your vehicle’s fuel efficiency and optimize its performance. Thus, utilizing trip meters for monitoring trip distances is a valuable tool for both managing expenses and improving the efficiency of your vehicle.
Tips for Using Odometer and Trip Meter
To maximize the utility of your vehicle’s odometer and trip meter functions, familiarize yourself with these practical tips.
- Maintenance Reminders: Use your trip meter to keep track of maintenance schedules. Reset Trip A or Trip B after each service to monitor intervals accurately.
- Fuel Consumption: Monitor your fuel efficiency by recording trip distances and fuel consumption for each trip separately. This data can help you identify any changes in efficiency and address issues promptly.
- Trip Distances: Utilize the trip meter to track distances for different purposes, such as business or personal trips. Resetting the trip meter before each journey allows you to measure specific distances without interference.

Trip odometer reset?
- Add to quote
I just filled my tank for the first time and want to reset the trip odometer to keep track (in addition to the computer) but I am embarrassed to say I can’t figure out how. Full disclosure- I didn’t look in the (huge) owner’s manual yet but I will. I was just hoping for a quick answer to a simple thing that I have always been able to figure out in other cars! Thanks!
Reset button is below the gauges to the left of the steering column.
PS the manual is huge.
Press once to change from trip A to B or press and hold for resetting. Cheers!!

Did you ever get an answer to this question? I love my Ascent but the are minor issues like this one that I can't seem to get answers to. The answers really don't give k(k(
As stated above, press and hold down the Trip button that you use to switch between A and B. Which ever one is being displayed will reset to zero after about 2 seconds of holding the button down.
I use the 'A' odometer for oil changes, reset to zero when I change oil, and the 'B' odometer for fill-ups of gas so I can track fuel economy. Besides these 'hard' odometers, there is at least one other that works from the paddles on the steering wheel and another on the small screen above the radio. One will tell you trip mileage from the time you started the car for each trip. I use it between fill ups.
My WRX had aMPG average for the total odometer reading. I wonder why the Ascent doesn’t! With 84 k miles I averaged 28.6
The Ascent does, but maybe not the way you want it. You'd have to use one of the trips and simply never reset it. F.S.
I use one trip for checking mpg, resetting with each tank fill up. The other trip is used for oil changes. Easy to see how many miles since last oil change.
When they roll over to 0 after 10000, do they keep the data (mpg, etc) or start over? My trip b has never been over 6000 Trip a never over 500. Any guess what I track with them?

Odometer reset

I just bought a 2013 outback 2 5 limited, how do you reset the digital trip odometer to 0 , and also my passenger airbag light says off, how do I reset that thanks for any help.
Not trying to be smarta$$ here, but did you get a manual with that car? It would be in there. On mine there is a trip button but it's hard to see from where I sit as the steering wheel obscures my view. I press once to cycle the trip from A to B or vice versa, and press/hold to reset whichever one I'm viewing. As for my passenger air bag light - it's butt sensitive. Off if no one is sitting in the seat. Also likely in the manual.
press and hold left side button in instrument cluster until it resets. this will also reset your MPG gauge.

ArF193. Just press and hold the button on the left of the steering wheel. This will reset the current trip (A or B depending) to 0. The button is on the dash near the left side of the steering column. It is mostly blocked from the driver's view by the steering wheel.

The trip odometer is not on the same rotation as the odometer. If the ECM sees the mileage at say 120320.6 and you reset the trip odometer, the trip odometer starts at zero at the mileage you tripped it. So every time the odometer hits the next mile, the trip will be .6 behind. Same as if you reset the trip at 120320.3, the trip will be .3 behind.

The average MPG is from the last time you reset the trip (there are two trips). It's also highly optimistic. Ours reads 2-3 MPG higher than actual. The best way to keep track if you're interested in that is to record miles driven and gallons pumped.
