99 cruise control quit. now what

  • Add to quote

99 dodge cummins 2WD 87k miles. the cruise control quite the other day came back on once then quit again. the light doesnt light up on the dash. I checked the fuses but couldnt find one marked curise control and none were blown. any suggestions before I take it to the 80.00 per hr place. oh it is an auto tranny. this was also rebuilder. cruise worked for 15k miles then died thanks for the help

My truck is having the same problem but it is a 5spd. I am thinking that it is the speed sensor in the rear diff. but if somone knows that would be great to save the time. thanks James

The carter he is talking about is a lift pump. The crappy stock lift pump that Carter replaced was actually made by carter, so... IMO its not the pump its the location and size of the pump. One mounted on the frame rail would make it last much longer, pumps do better pushing than pulling. Sean

sean is right, the pump i replaced is the lift pump. The stock pump is a carter aswell but is only pushes 65GPH and 13-14PSI. I replaced the stocker with two carters that push 18PSI max and 120 GPH. One at the stock location and another right in front of the fuel tank on the Frame rail. I am really liking this setup. I am running the edge very well. I have not gotten to a Dyno yet but it should be somewhere around 350 HP maybe more, but that is a conservative guess. If you need Napa part numbers let me know. James

The cruise unit under the hood could be bad, but more likely I would venture to say it is the clock spring in the steering wheel where all the controls go through.

If it is the clock spring, it should have a TSB, mine was replace by the dealer.

I had the same problem and , fixed it by replacing the clock spring. It wasn't all that hard to replace , it only took about 30 min.

check your vacuum fittings... from the vacuum pump (directly forward of the powersteering pump) up to the T-fittings on the firewall, thats the most common problem with CC

99 Cummins - new to me pickup - that has issues

I just got this 99 Dodge Cummins QCSB 4x4 Laramie SLT with an auto transmission on November 24th, and I drove 640 miles round trip that day to trade my 99 GMC Sierra SLT 3 door lifted short box 4x4 for it. The 320 mile drive home was harsh with shitty 305/70R16 tires, worn out steering stabilizer shock, and cruise control not working.

I did find out that the pickup has a Redhead steering box, BD Diesel Performance adjustable track bar setup, aftermarket boxed trailering arms, and a Skyjacker lift in it.

It had no CEL or any other lights warning lights light up on the test drive at the car dealer's or on the drive home. The only light that stays on, is the seat belt light blinks when starting the pickup, and then after a bit when the seat belt is buckled, the light stays lit up solid.

The next day it had the ABS and brake lights both come on at the same time, but the brakes were still functioning great without any issues. Shut the pickup down and the lights would be off until some random time later that they would come back on again. I replaced the rear ABS / VSS sensor as that is usually the cheap and easy part to replace, but that didn't fix it. The pickup had 3 worn out Falken Wild Peak A/T tires, and then 1 BFG M & S tire with more tread than the other Falken tires on the rear. I figured that since the BFG had more tread and was taller than the Falken tire on the other end of the rearend, that maybe that tire was essentially rotating a tad bit slower since it was taller than the worn out Falken tire, which would make that axle spin slower  compared to the opposite axle shaft. I replaced the tires with a brand new set of 285/75R16 Continental Terra Troopers, and now the ABS /brake lights only come on once in a while now.

I started getting the dead pedal on it and just replaced the APPS with a brand new Timbo APPS and it hasn't had a dead pedal since. Last week I put in two new matching batteries in the pickup and cleaned all the terminals very well.

The pickup has a delay boot up for the ECM with the WTS light and triggering the lift pump to start the engine. Sometimes the delay is 10-15 seconds and sometimes it's less than 10 seconds waiting for the WTS to come on.

I haven't had much time yet to check the clock spring to see if it's bad yet to fix the cruise control not working, but I plan on checking that here fairly soon.

The engine seems to have a very slight noticeable intermittent flutter at idle at times, but it is not synchronous as in it does not happen every 10 seconds. I don't notice it when driving at any speed down the road though.

The 47RE is completely painted gold with a blue pan, so I'm assuming that someone has been into the transmission at some point in time, but it doesn't have one issue when heavy acceleration or WOT use - the trans will shift from 1st to 2nd and then when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd, it immediately revs up 300 to 500 more rpm and then it shifts into 3rd, and then it will shift to OD . It does not slip at all when it does the weird shift from 2nd to 3rd and then like it shifts back to 2nd momentarily and then shifts to 3rd again. The trans fluid is up and looks fairly clean and does not look or smell burnt. The trans has a slight torque converter shudder in OD under slight acceleration, but doesn't do it under hard acceleration, so is this a mainline fluid pressure issue causing this, and which part in the trans needs to be replaced to fix this?

My good friend that is the IT guy and also works in the R & D Department at Diamond Eye Manufacturing hooked his Pegasys comprehensive scanner tool to it this evening, and this is what we got from the ECM / PCM ;

1. Trans code # 1694

2. ABS codes # 37, 75, 78, 81 (pickup only has rear ABS ) - does the tire size being taller than stock which makes the speedo off by 4 mph, cause these codes?

3. PCM module hardware malfunction or "Communication Failure or no Controller Available error.

At one point it seemed like his Pegasys scanner could not get any real time data from the system either, so should I be looking for a 99 Dodge Cummins auto trans  PCM now? If so, does anyone here have a 99 auto trans PCM for a decent price? What PCM part number do I need to be looking for?

I bought a 99 Cummins ECM from him (ESN # 56602445, P/N 3942336, S/N 2153549, D/C 06/16/99, ECM Code J90269.05) for $50 but haven't had time to swap it into the pickup yet. I know the ECM has been changed before I got the pickup because the VIN on it does not match the VIN of the pickup. The pickup VIN is 1B7KF2369XJ553768 and the ECM VIN is 1B7KC2368XJ503078. The only real difference between the two is that the ECM VIN is from a 2wd pickup and not a 4x4.

I can't wait for @Chris O.  to get his custom DRBIII tool available, because it seems as I will need one of them to help me get these things fixed on my pickup.

You seem to be on a right track, the only thing I would recommend is checking alternator for excessive ac noise/output

Yes, I will be checking that this weekend to ensure that the AC noise is down in the acceptable level. I don't want it wiping out my new Timbo APPS or anything else.

I found a known good used PCM from a 99 Cummins 4x4 Quad Cab Laramie SLT with a 47RE trans and Federal Emissions just like my pickup is set up for $150. I know that the PCM VIN won't match my pickup, but will it do anything off besides throw the vin mismatch code?

If the PCM was on a 99 Cummins QCLB 3500 4x4 with a 47RE trans that might have had 4 wheel ABS , and since my 99 only has rear ABS , will that make the ABS light pop up on the dash all the time?

Nobody has any insight on this?

Where is the most reputable place to purchase a brand new PCM that will be programmed according to my VIN on the pickup?

dripley

It might set a code since it is looking for 3 sensor inputs but the truck should run fine other than that I would think. Dont know where to a PCM either new or rebuilt. Not sure a new one would be available.

GSP7

  PCM or ECM ?

About the lowest core charge on a ECM if found is $200 .

If I was you I would be trying to find a reputable place that can program a ECM to your vin #.

Try Flight Systems- RAE.: https://www.remanautoelectronics.com/dodge/cummins-78.aspx This is where I bought my ECM for my '99

Their prices are very good too.  I know shops are getting ECMs from them and raising the price to their customers

Also Look Here:

I need PCM though.

If I buy a used PCM for a 99 Dodge Cummins 4x4 with an auto trans, will it constantly throw a VIN mismatch code or will that only be stored in memory? Also, will it put my pickup in limp mode or will there be any other negative side effects?

Anyone have any input on using a 99 Cummins 4x4 47RE PCM that was programmed for 4 wheel ABS on my 99 Cummins 4x4 47RE (both trucks are Laramie SLT with the same options) that only has rear ABS ? Will it throw a constant ABS /brake light on the dash, and will it throw a CEL due to the PCM having a different VIN ? I need some help with this ASAP please.

I'm sorry I can't answer it, usually if I don't reply, I simply don't know or busy with life. I can't speak for others but have a feeling it's about same. Someone will probably answer your questions but it's not always on time as I found myself. We do all try though. I understand the urgency we all have at times. Just wanted to reply to let you know more then likely we are all looking at threads just need to wait for the right person.

I'm pretty dumb when it comes to electronics and some days wish I had a 12 valve that was built.

Killer223

i think you'll need to take it to the dealer and have it flashed with your vin, and the ABS should go away.

PCM CANNOT be reflashed.

6 minutes ago, jlbayes said: PCM CANNOT be reflashed.

Sure it can

3 minutes ago, GSP7 said: Sure it can     .   .

Uh no. It cannot.

My current PCM shows that it was reprogrammed by the dealer in 2002, so I think they are able to re-flash/re-program it.

2 hours ago, 99_Cummins_4x4 said: My current PCM shows that it was reprogrammed by the dealer in 2002, so I think they are able to re-flash/re-program it.

You cannot change the vin in the pcm with a reflash using a drb III or emulator. A flash update is based off the vin the tool recognizes. What you are asking for does not exist as the controller is locked.

Regarding my seat belt light staying on, it flashes like normal and then after a bit it goes solid and stays on until I shut the pickup off. Can this be a CTM or PCM issue?

Mine stayed on for years. Figured it was the seat belt latch or the wiring at same. Just swapped in a new set of seats and the light is out. It could just be a loose wire.

Cruise Control comes on but does not work (98 Ram 1500)

  • Add to quote

My cruise control light will come on, but nothing else works. I know this is typically a vacum line problem, but I have looked at all of the vacum lines that I can see and they look good. This is not to say that I missed one somewhere, because I'm not sure which one(s) the cruise control uses?? Is there anything else I can check? Where is the actual cruise control unit? Frank Nashville, TN :help:

99 dodge cummins no cruise control

First find the servo that accuates the throttle for the cruise control. Once found trace the vacumm line attached to it back to the throttle body to see if there are any leaks in it. If the servo is located under the battery chances are the battery has allowed some of it's content to leak down on the hose and eat through it. This is a common problem since Dodge mounts the servo on some models under the battery. I had to cut out a small section and put a small section of rubber vacumm hose in it's place on my 2001 Ram. If your is the same way chances are this is where the problem lies. Start the truck and listen for a leak in this area. Run your hand around the line to see if you can feel the leak. I found mine on the underside of the line.

Also, look for where the cable from the cruise control connects to the throttle body. I had some A/C work done and they accidentally bumped it loose.

There Is Also A Switch On The Brake If A Stick On The Clutch Pedal

99 dodge cummins no cruise control

I had the same issue with my '99 1500 and it turned out to be a faulty brake sensor that was keeping the cruise control from triggering. It's a long shot, but perhaps something to consider in addition to the other ideas posted previously.

Thanks for the information. I found the servo under the battery, but that is about all I have had time to do. Looks like I have several things to check this weekend. I let you guys know what I find.

It was indeed the servo. I fixed it some time ago, but am just now getting around to reply. The vacum hose was cracked where it goes into the servo. It took quite a while to fix as I had to remove the battery and the battery tray, which has some hidden bolts in the wheel well itself. Once I pulled the old piece of hose from the server and spliced a new piece in, everthing works like a champ. What a STUPID design... Frank Nashville, TN

My buddy has asked me to take a look at his 99 1 ton dodge w/ a cummins and 5 spd. He is saying he has no throttle response, the truck just idles. It sounds like a throttle position sensor to me, but my cummins experience is limited. Any other issues could be causing this problem you guys may be aware of?

It could be as simple as a throttle linkage rod popped off the bellcrank on the injector pump. Not uncommon on the earlier ones. If it is similar to my 95, it is a ball and socket type of connector from the rod to bellcrank. The accelerator pedal should probably feel limp if that is what happened.

Sound like the injection pump. Does he have a fuel pressure gauge? Check for codes by turning the key on and off three times leaving it in the on position and look for codes on the odometer. JC

I had a 96 model, the cable comes off the little ball of the linkage on the fuel pump sometimes, and if remember right there was a recal on some of these year models. Good luck

Is not a '99 "fly by wire"? (no mechanical linkage) Not sure what year that started. If so it could be a TPS (throttle position sensor) problem. Could also be an injection pump. Bad fuel pumps can starve the injection pump and cause failure of the injection pump. Have you checked for codes stored? Kim

I have a 99. It is indeed a potentiometer. I don't remember the reset routine but if you do a search on the site turbodieselregister.com, i bet you will find the detail there. The foot pedal does pull a cable, but if you take the cover off on the engine where the cable terminates, you should likely see the potentimeter that tells the computer how much go juice you want. If the cable is intact then it may very well be the pot has gone by. The computer will not like a reading out of range and should throw a CEL and even put the system into the idle only mode. Any way, I am running off my memory and that site has tons of data. Well worth the investment if you have to pay to join it. I have been a member since I bought my truck new in 99. Yes there are other sites but I have not followed them. Good luck. By the way, if the truck is free of rust I might take it off his hands even with the throttle problem. Mine is almost at the point where I can't pass inspection. Darn Vermont Salt!!

Arent the 98.5 and up yr models the ISB's engines infamous for the liftpump/injector pump issues?? I had several instances of a dead pedal and it was the injector pump going out - caused by the weak lift pump.. Brian

Have your friend check with this vendor. I have no experience with him but did hear of his site: TBM Mechanical Service Throttle position sensor or the VP44 injector pump as stated above. Have you been able to pull any codes from the computer? That might help narrow the problem down.

Loss of control, B735 on approach to Moscow-Vnukovo

Loss of control, B735 on approach to Moscow-Vnukovo. UTair flight UT588 from Krasnodar to Moscow, Russia, reportedly suffered a loss of control incident while on approach to Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport.  Unconfirmed reports from Russian aviation sources suggest that the aircraft was on approach to runway 06 when a situation developed where the aircraft attained a pitch attitude of +45 degrees.

The aircraft rolled 33 degrees to the right, then -34.8 to the left. The pitch supposedly decreased to 30 with the speed dropping to 60 KIAS.

The aircraft is then thought to have rolled 96 degrees to the right, pitching -14 degrees (nose down).

It then banked 45 degrees to the left with speed increasing to 150 KIAS. The flight crew then regained control and reported to ATC that they were going around because the approach was unstabilised.

The crew positioned the aircraft for another approach and proceeded for a landing at 06:35 UTC, about 18 minutes after the event.

The aircraft was still on the ground at Vnukovo, eleven days after the event.

What would cause my cruise control to keep accelerating???

  • Add to quote

I have a 1999 and the cruise control accelerates on its own. I'm sure it's not related to the accelerate button because it doesn't climb that fast. All buttons set, cancel, coast, accelerate and turns on and off as it should. Just keeps climbing higher and higher. Any ideas anyone? Thanks in advance.

Curious as well. My 99 does the same thing.

99 dodge cummins no cruise control

So does my 99

99 dodge cummins no cruise control

there was a tsb out on this i cant find it right now but it had to do with setting you cruise well you were accelerating or with your foot off the pedal.the cruise then assumes that there is play in the cable and adapts to that.you should be setting your cruise well holding a constant speed they say that to retrain the cruise you have to set the cruise no less then 15 times and leave it on for 10 seconds then cancel it and do it again all well mantaining a constant speed. I beleive that i found that tsb on the cumminsforum.com website.if i find it i will post it for others to read. hope this helps

^^^googled it. That was the first of several pages on this topic.

99 dodge cummins no cruise control

My 99 did that too until I took it in and they flashed the ecm. Now it's the steadiest cruise I haveever used...set it at 67 and the GPS will read 67 until I take it off cruise. They were supposed to engage the 3cyl high idle too, but that never happened....

Make sure you are not hitting the set or accelerate button on the side with you finger or thumb when holding the wheel. Not sure about my Dodge but I know I have had it happen that way on my Explorer and I think on the Dodge once or twice too..
