2 Cruising the Columbia River Board the ship and enjoy a day with Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens as your backdrop as we cruise to the mouth of the West’s most famous river. 3 Astoria, OR You’ll visit Columbia River Maritime Museum, where the American Pride is docked. Other potential places to visit could include the Astoria Column or Fort Clatsop. Local Tip: The easiest tour of Astoria is to ride the Astoria Trolley! It’s $1 for one trip, or pay $2 for a hand stamp and ride as much as you want that day. The Trolley runs from one end of town to the other all day. The conductors are great tour guides, pointing out historical places and interesting Astoria facts. The American Pride will be docked in front of the Columbia River Maritime Museum, and there is a trolley stop right in front of the museum!
4 Kalama, WA/Mount St. Helens You’ll visit Johnston’s Ridge Observatory at Mt. St. Helens. Have your cameras ready, because the views of the volcano are stunning. Local Tip: Be sure to watch the video. Listening to David Johnston, the volcanologist for whom the observatory is named, yell out his final warning, “Vancouver! Vancouver! This is it!” is stunning and gives a personal mark to the eruption.
5 Cruising the Columbia River Gorge The Columbia River Gorge is a spectacular river canyon cutting through the Cascade Mountain Range with amazing natural contrasts of rain forest and desert, sea-level passage and alpine meadows. You’ll also visit the Bonneville Dam and the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center. Local Tip: There are signs marking all the falls: Multnomah Falls, Horsetail Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, etc. The sign that says, “Shepherd’s Dell” is also a waterfall! Don’t pass it by without looking!
7 Hood River, OR Hood River is a beautiful town, sitting at the base of Mt Hood. The complimentary excursion fo the day is a brewery tour at the local Full Sail Brewery. Or you could take a ride on Mt. Hood Railroad, heading up the mountain for great views of the Gorge and Mt Hood! Local Tip: Hood River has amazing breweries and wineries! 8 The Dalles, OR Sitting between Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams, The Dalles was the last stop on the Oregon Trail. Included is a visit to the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center – a stunning museum documenting the ancient history of the region to the various groups of people who have occupied the region. There’s even a display about riverboats – makes a great photo op! Local Tip: If you want to adventure across the river, you can visit Maryhill Museum of Art. Take some time to walk around the outdoor sculpture garden and walk over to Stonehenge. Built as a replica of the original, this Stonehenge stands as a World War I memorial, completed in 1929.
9 Richland, WA Once upon a time, this was a village known as Chemna, sitting at the mouth of the Yakima River, where Native Americans would harvest salmon runs. The Lewis & Clark Expedition visited Chemna on October 17, 1805. The small farming town of Richland was formed in 1910, until it became a bedroom community for workers on the Army’s Manhattan Project at nearby Hanford. A 5-minute walk from the ship, tour REACH Museum to learn about the creation of the first atomic bomb. Using Hanford Reach National Monument as the focal point, the museum tells the story of the people, the land and the river that connects it all with artifacts and exhibits of the people and the only complete baby woolly mammoth skeleton.
10 Pendleton, OR Journey south to the wild west town of Pendleton, OR! The underground city tour is highly suggested, and will introduce you to the secrets of this city and it’s history in the frontier. Or visit the Pendleton Woolen Mill and Museum, famous for the town’s woven masterpieces that they’ve been creating for more than 100 years! Onboard, representatives from the Bernard Griffin Winery will lead our cocktail hour with an exclusive wine tasting!

8 Things You'll Experience on a Columbia & Snake River Cruise
As one of the hottest travel trends in recent years, river cruises offer travelers the chance to experience unique destinations that are often more adventure focused. Passengers can look forward to embarking on expeditions to places where large vessels simply can’t–and some of the most alluring options can be found in the Pacific Northwest, typically on the Columbia and Snake Rivers.
The confluence of the Columbia and Snake rivers is in the Tri-Cities region of Washington at Burbank, part of Lake Wallula. The Snake River rises in western Wyoming before flowing through southern Idaho along the border of Oregon where it empties into the Columbia. From there, the river stretches some 325 miles further west to the Pacific Ocean near the town of Astoria in Oregon.
Ships that cruise these rivers typically sail between Astoria and Clarkston, Washington, making a 500-mile journey through diverse terrain and many spectacular sights, including these.
Hells Canyon
This dramatic gorge and its vast granite walls draped with vibrant foliage frame the Snake River, carving one of the most stunning canyons in the United States.
It’s the country’s deepest river gorge, deeper than even the Grand Canyon at over a mile deep. River cruise passengers are typically introduced to Hells Canyon via small jet boats, which are included on itineraries like UnCruise Adventures’ 7-night Rivers of Adventure Cruise from Spokane to Portland.
Along the way, guides will point out the abundant wildlife like Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep and mule deer, as well as Native American petroglyphs.
Insider Tip: This region is where the famous Lewis and Clark expedition once traded for food and it was also home to the Nez Perce Native Americans for thousands of years.
Waterfalls and More in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area
The Columbia River Gorge carves a path through the Cascade Mountains and is a National Scenic Area.
Along the river that runs through the 80-mile-long and 4,000-feet-deep gorge, there are over two dozen waterfalls. Some cruises like the Uncruise Adventures 7-night Rivers of Wine and Culinary Arts Cruise, sail across four rivers in this area: the Snake, the Columbia, the Palouse and the Willamette.
The Palouse River is surrounded by colorful, dramatic basalt cliffs, situated just upstream of the confluence with the Snake River. It’s home to Palouse Falls which plunges nearly 200 feet, 17 feet higher than Niagara Falls. Of course, the gorge is especially famous for Multnomah Falls in Oregon, which is arguably the state’s most popular attraction and one of the most photographed waterfalls in the world.
All cruises on the Columbia River bring mesmerizing views of the breathtaking Mount Hood, Oregon’s tallest mountain which soars over the landscape at 11,239 feet. Views of it always bring plenty of oohs and aahs–and, you’ll have a picture-perfect look from the water.
Mount St. Helens
With American Cruise Lines’ 4-night Highlights of the Columbia River Cruise, you’ll not only be able to see Mount St. Helens, but you’ll also be taken by expert guides to witness the lava dome and pumice plain while learning about the impact the eruption had on the lives of those in the surrounding towns and on the environment.
As you cruise along the Columbia River, you’ll enjoy especially picturesque views of the many vineyards that are part of Columbia Gorge Country. Wine enthusiasts have options for wine-focused itineraries like the aforementioned 7-Night Rivers of Wine and Culinary Arts Cruise offered by Uncruise Adventures, bringing the chance to delve into the region’s tasty wines at tasting rooms and wineries in Oregon and Washington.
Bonneville Dam
Bonneville Dam is a National Historic Landmark located near the entrance of the scenic Columbia River Gorge about 40 miles east of Portland. With the 7-Nights River of Adventure Cruise hosted by Uncruise, you’ll transit eight locks and tour the visitor center which includes learning about hydropower generation, a hiking trail and watching various vessels pass through the navigation lock.
Insider Tip: At Bonneville Dam’s visitor center, river cruisers may also get the chance to watch salmon climb the fish ladders–an amazing sight!
Fort Clatsop, Oregon
Fort Clatsop is a popular shore excursion with multiple cruise lines that sail the Columbia. It hosts a replica of the fort where the Lewis and Clark expedition wintered in the early 19th-century.
It was reconstructed 100 feet from the site of the original fort that was built from a floor plan that Clark himself drew on the cover of one of his journals. There are hiking trails for enjoying the scenery and perhaps walking in the very steps of Lewis and Clark themselves. You’ll also find a visitor center with many fascinating displays about the pair’s arduous journey to the untamed west.
Astoria, Oregon
Astoria sits along the Columbia River and hosts over 70 Victorian-era homes. It’s one of the oldest American settlements west of the Rockies, steeped in history and culture.
American Cruise Lines includes a tour of the city on its Columbia and Snake Rivers cruises, along with Fort Clatsop. You’ll be able to take in one of the best views around from the Astoria Column, which sits atop the highest peak in the city. From here, on a clear day, you’ll be able to look over the Pacific Ocean, snow-capped volcanoes and the Columbia River where your vessel will be waiting in its port.

Astoria, Oregon, US
Scenic Astoria, Oregon, is awash in history and raffish port town charm. For a city of just 10,000 people, there’s much to do. Climb its famous column to see a vast panorama of water and woods. Pub-crawl the waterfront Riverwalk with the help, in season, of an old-fashioned trolley. Feast on fresh seafood. Explore a state-of-the-art maritime museum, a low-tech cannery museum or a river pilot’s Gilded Age mansion. Or take a short trek to Fort Clatsop, named for the local tribe, where Lewis and Clark hunkered down in the cold, rainy winter of 1805.
Six years later, John Jacob Astor’s Pacific Fur Company started the first permanent U.S. settlement on the west coast. Located at the mouth of the Columbia River, Astoria became a vibrant port with a strong economy based on shipping, fishing and timber. In the 1980s both the Bumble Bee Seafood canneries and the Astoria Plywood Mill closed and the era of tourism began. Starting with The Goonies , the town also became a popular movie set—scenes in Kindergarten Cop, Free Willy, Short Circuit, The Ring Two, Into the Wild and The Guardian were all shot in the charming, steep-hilled town.
Today Astoria’s fine restaurants, brewpubs, trendy hotels and quirky shops—along with its impressive views and nearby Pacific beaches—make it a great place for a relaxed visit.
