Ellijay, GA

20+ Minutes Outside of Blue Ridge

Not far from Blue Ridge, sits the lovely town of Ellijay, known for its wonderful apple orchards, fantastic mountain biking trails, inviting wineries, and vibrant downtown area. Since Ellijay is known as the Apple Capital of Georgia we recommend checking out their local orchards in the fall; some of our favorites include Hillcrest Orchards , B.J. Reece Orchards , and R & A Orchards . And in October you can celebrate Ellijay’s famous apples at their annual Georgia Apple Festival .

On top of apples Ellijay is known for its wonderful mountain biking trails and a plethora of outdoor activities! Ride your bike through hundreds of miles of diverse biking trails from beginner to expert on Ellijay’s winding mountain trails or hike through Fort Mountain State Park where you can take in the sunset from the old fire tower or from the mountain peak. Along with hiking, Fort Mountain Park includes other outdoor activities like horseback riding, kayaking, and of course mountain biking. And when you’re done with your exciting outdoor adventures head to one of Ellijay’s famous wineries for a refreshing glass of wine after your busy day. Blairsville, GA

30+ Minutes Outside of Blue Ridge

Blairsville is all about the great outdoors with its great hiking trails, state parks, and mountain peaks to explore. Some of our favorite Blairsville hikes include Vogel State Park , Helton Creek Falls , Blood Mountain , and of course Brasstown Bald , the tallest mountain peak in the state of Georgia. Brasstown Bald sits 4,784 feet above sea level and offers exceptional views of the surrounding mountains. You can even see four different states from the observation deck.

And don’t forget the moonshine! Blairsville is also home to Grandaddy Mimm’s Distilling Co. a local favorite in the area. Stop by for a sampling of their best moonshine or take a tour of the distillery itself! Inside you’ll find many eclectic relics, as well as a wide array of music memorabilia and instruments collected by owner Tommy Townsend over the years.

Not too far from Blue Ridge in Murphy, NC is a one-of-a-kind hidden bible theme park that will take your breath away! Fields of the Wood covers a total area of 220 beautiful acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains. From Prayer Mountain to the gigantic Ten Commandments, there’s so much to experience here. After taking in the beauty of Fields of the Wood , pay a visit to the Charter of Freedom Monument which pays homage to our American ideals & democracy. Keep the American spirit going with a trip to the Cherokee County Historical Museum , which dives into the rich history of the Cherokee Indians who called Murphy home. And if you’re looking for a little late night entertainment Murphy, NC is even home to Harrah’s Cherokee River Valley Casino where you can try your luck at the craps table or at the slots machine. Learn a little and have some fun in the beautiful town of Murphy!

40+ Minutes Outside of Blue Ridge

Known as “The First Mountain City” and the Marble Capital of Georgia, Jasper is home to incredible long range mountain views, charming wineries, beautiful gardens, and a fascinating Cherokee history. We love grabbing a glass of wine from local wineries, Fainting Goat Vineyards and Sharp Mountain Vineyards . And the Old Pickens County Jail , with it’s marble jail front, is a unique and fascinating tour through the past, that history lovers should be sure to add to their list. But one of Jasper’s most popular spots is the beautiful Gibbs Gardens ! Spanning over 220 acres, Gibbs Gardens is comprised of more than 16 distinct gardens, each with its own unique style like the Japanese gardens and the Manor House gardens. Some of it’s most remarkable features are it’s breathtaking display of over 20 million daffodils, it’s splendid array of over 40,000 tulips, numerous cherry blossoms, and hundreds of vibrant forsythias. Additionally, local Georgia flowers such as rhododendrons, dogwoods, azaleas, and other wildflowers grace these picturesque gardens.

Hiawassee, GA

45+ Minutes Outside of Blue Ridge

Hiawassee, Georgia: A town where you can find stunning mountain peaks, recreational fun on Lake Chatuge, and great live music & events all within a few minutes from each other! For both lake & mountain views, head to the top of Bell Mountain’s observation deck where you’ll be treated to stunning 360-degree panoramas of Lake Chatuge, the surrounding mountains, and the quaint little town of Hiawassee below. Standing at over 3,400 feet above sea level, you’ll feel as though you’re on top of the world!

Hiawassee is also home to the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds and the Hamilton Rhododendron Gardens , two great spots where there’s always something going on! At the Fairgrounds you’ll find monthly concerts from some of the best country, gospel, and rock artists in the business, as well as exciting festivals & events. And every summer they host their biggest event of the year, the Georgia Mountain Fair where thousands of guests come to the Fairgrounds to experience carnival rides, fair food, live entertainment & music acts, craft vendors, and more! The charming Hamilton Gardens , also on the property, holds the largest collection of rhododendrons and azaleas in the Southeast. As you explore the peaceful garden trails, you’ll learn all about North Georgia’s native flora, while enjoying distant views of Lake Chatuge.

Dawsonville, GA

50+ Minutes Outside of Blue Ridge

Dawsonville, GA is widely regarded as the birthplace of NASCAR so it seems only fitting that the town is home to the incredible Georgia Racing Hall of Fame ! At the museum you can learn all about the history of motorsports in Georgia, and check out their special exhibit featuring Daswonville’s own NASCAR champion, Chase Elliot! Race cars not your thing? No problem! Get some shopping done at the North Georgia Premium Outlets , which holds more than 140 designer and name brand stores. And in the fall you’ll want to check out Burts Farm and Uncle Shuck’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch for pumpkin patches, corn mazes, hayrides and more!

Dawsonville is also home to the tallest waterfall in the state of Georgia! Amicalola Falls claims the title with a towering height of 729 feet. You can access these breathtaking falls from three different routes, each varying in difficulty: a straightforward drive to the top of the falls, a steep yet brief hike along the 2.1-mile loop, or on the 7.5-mile hike along the Appalachian Trail .

1 Hour Outside of Blue Ridge

This beautiful mountain town is straight out of a storybook with its German influences and architecture. Stroll the charming village streets and take in the shops & restaurants, like Hansel and Gretel Candy Kitchen , Lindenhaus Imports , and Hofbrauhaus Restaurant . In the fall Helen celebrates Oktoberfest like no other town in Georgia with all the pretzels and beer you can imagine, and in the winter this lovely town transforms into a Hallmark movie, and was even named the #1 Christmas Town in America by Southern Living.

If you’re looking for thrills then check out the Georgia Mountain Coaster – the first and only alpine coaster in the state of Georgia! You’ll zoom past breathtaking mountain vistas and lush forests at your own pace, as you have full control over the speed of the ride. Helen is also a great place for hikers & waterfall lovers because it’s home to four stunning waterfalls; Anna Ruby Falls , Dukes Creek Falls , Horse Trough Falls , and Raven Creek Falls .

And for the history lovers out there, you’ll have the opportunity to learn all about the Cherokee Indian Tribe with a trip to the Sautee Nacoochee Indian Mound . The site serves as not only a peaceful resting site for many Cherokee Indians but is also home to the Hardman Farm & Estate , home of Georgia governor Dr. Lamartine Hardman.

Dahlonega, GA

You’ve struck gold with a visit to Dahlonega, GA and that’s because this charming mountain town is a historic gold mining town. While Dahlonega is no longer a mining town you can still tour and experience the old mines where Americans first struck gold in 1828, 20 years before the California gold rush! Learn about the history of the Dahlonega gold rush at the Dahlonega Gold Museum , tour the old mines at Consolidated Gold Mines Inc , or pan for your own gold treasures at Crisson Gold Mine . Horseback Riding in Blue Ridge If you want to experience the beautiful terrain of the Blue Ridge forests, this activity is a great option! This family-friendly location has been open since 1955 and is suitable for all ages. The entry price is affordable and concessions are available as well.

Suspension Bridges and Adventurous Activities in North Georgia If you and your family want a more scenic and thrilling experience, visit one of the three suspension bridges in North Georgia, which include the 180-foot-long Swing-a-Long Bridge at Rock City Gardens, the 270-foot-long swinging bridge over the Toccoa River, and the bridge at Tallulah Gorge State Park . These three bridges connect scenic trails that will allow visitors to capture the beauty of North Georgia.

If you visit this area during the warmer months of the year, you can visit Bridal Veil Falls at Tallulah Gorge State Park, which becomes known as the Sliding Rock for people brave enough to slide down the rocks and into the pool below. Experienced kayakers will also have the opportunity to brave the waterfalls when “whitewater releases” occur biannually in the spring and the fall.

Other favorite outdoor North Georgia stops include hiking trails to Amicalola (“tumbling waters” in Cherokee) Falls and Anna Ruby Falls, rides on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, Brasstown Bald, Lake Chatuge, and the Chattahoochee River in the Chattahoochee National Forest.

Historical Sites in North Georgia If you’re interested in historical sites and artifacts that capture the past experiences and events of the area, you’ll have plenty of options. Some local interesting sites include Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site (learn about the gold rush and go panning), the Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site, the Foxfire Museum & Heritage Center, the New Echota State Historic Site, and the Currahee Military Museum. You can also spend a day in historic Helen, a charming Bavarian-style mountain town.

Wineries and Vineyards in North Georgia Since this area is home to a robust wine industry, you can visit one of the many local wineries, which are generally best known for their Muscadet and fruit wines – and often boast live music. In Dahlonega, enjoy a beautiful mountain view while sipping on the tasty wines at Kaya’s Winery. Another notable winery is Wolf Mountain Vineyards. This location received gold medals and best-in-class status from California Wine Competitions. On top of their award-winning wines, enjoy spectacular views over the North Georgia mountains.

Ziplining in North Georgia If you enjoy the thrill of soaring across scenic locations, you will love ziplining in North Georgia. Visitors can try ropes courses, climb rock walls, and join a guide for an interactive tour. Various companies, such as Zipline Canopy Tours of Blue Ridge and Historic Banning Mills, offer a wide range of courses and tours that almost everyone can enjoy. However, there is an age limit on some of the activities, so make sure you plan accordingly.

Day Tripping in Ellijay

No matter the season, ellijay offers ample opportunities to go outside and do things.

ONCE UPON A TIME, migratory trails passed through Ellijay and Gilmer County during the 1800s, drawing pioneering farmers to the area. After cotton moved south, crops like peaches, blueberries, and apples replaced it, and Ellijay became a hub for travelers seeking health in the fresh, mountain air. During the Great Depression, many of the hotels and businesses along Main Street fell into disrepair, but in recent years, the hospitable vibe of this little hamlet in the North Georgia foothills has been coming back to life.

Today, Downtown Ellijay is buzzing with local businesses, but it’s more laid-back than some of the other resort-style mountain towns—the perfect place to refresh and refuel after exploring an area ripe with recreational opportunities.

The anglicized form of the Cherokee name Elatseyi, which means “new ground” or “green space,” Ellijay and its sister town of East Ellijay are fertile lands indeed, dotted with orchards, farms and vineyards. The area is also home to the Ellijay, Cartecay and Coosawattee rivers, which converge just south of town, making this a great destination for anglers or anyone who simply likes to relax by the riverbank.

Though summer still attracts visitors seeking that cool mountain air and fall draws families in droves for the Georgia Apple Festival, there’s something for every season in this amiable town. In the winter, the crowds here start to thin but Georgia’s mostly mild weather means you don’t have to wait until spring to get out and explore Ellijay.

WHERE TO WANDER

Dahlonega may be the heart of North Georgia wine, but as agritourism has expanded all across the state, Ellijay Wine Country has become a destination all its own. The region, which comprises Gilmer and neighboring Pickens County, currently boasts seven vineyards and counting, so a day of vine-hopping is both feasible and fun.

Designate Go Wine! Tours as your transportation for the day, or plan your own self-guided tour, starting with an afternoon at Ellijay River Vineyards. Here, you can sample wine in a small barn on-site, but the real appeal is buying a bottle to enjoy at the river bend, where Adirondack chairs, swings and a fire pit make for a picturesque picnic spot. For a more traditional tasting room experience, kick back with killer mountain views at Ott Farms & Vineyard, or cozy up by the roaring fire at Cartecay Vineyards, both of which offer live entertainment, light bites and often food trucks on the weekends.

Of course, you can’t come to Georgia’s Apple Capital without paying a visit to one of its famed apple barns, no matter the season. Though many orchards cease outdoor activities during the winter, you can still enjoy the fruits of their labor with a visit to the market at B.J. Reece Orchards for fried apple and pumpkin pies, rolls, fudge, cake, dried apples, donuts and more.

When you’re ready to stretch your legs, lace up your hiking boots for a trek along the Tumbling Waters Trail, an easy 1-mile out-and-back hike that meanders through the forest in the Ridgeway Recreation Area at Carters Lake and across a wooden bridge to a series of waterfalls on Tails Creek. More adventurous souls may want to explore the Cohutta Wilderness Area, which boasts 13 trails totaling more than 87 miles of remote, often rugged hiking through the Cohutta Mountains, Georgia’s portion of the Smoky Mountain range.

For more recreation, book a day of fishing with Reel ‘Em In Guide Service on the Cartecay River or hit the links at Whitepath Golf Club, which offers unique scenery from its elevated tees.

WHERE TO EAT

Start your day with a strong cup of Joe at Ellijay Coffeehouse—touted as “your local living room,” the warm space invites you to linger over a book or board game in one of its cozy seating areas, peruse a selection of vintage toys, records and local goods, and power up with a breakfast Panini or the house-made granola that fills the space with the scent of cinnamon.

After your morning adventures, head back to River Street Tavern for a burger made with local beef from nearby Bear Creek Cattle Co. and a cold craft beer. Next, hop over to MooBears Ice Cream for a sweet hand-dipped treat.

At happy hour, head to Cartecay Wine & Craft, the downtown tasting room for Cartecay Vineyards, where you can sample flights of wine or local craft beers. Winter favorites include the rich, full-bodied Law Man Red, the seasonal, sweet Chimney Noel and Cartecay Sol, a unique beer/wine hybrid made in partnership with Fannin County Brewing in Blue Ridge.

Climb to The Roof for cocktails at sunset (we recommend The Hatfield, with vanilla-infused bourbon, coffee bitters, sorghum and a toasted cinnamon stick), then stay for dinner or stroll next door to Emily’s Bar and Restaurant for a swanky setting with seasonal fare like seared diver scallops with a ragout of Ellijay Mushrooms, grown just nine miles north of town.

WHERE TO SHOP

Whether you’re in the mood for treasure hunting at antique stores or stocking up on modern goods, there’s a shop for that in Downtown Ellijay.

Start your search at Outback Antiques and Treasures, a charming red barn peddling goods from more than 30 vendors. Next, stroll up River Street to Whimz Boutique for trendy yet affordable wares for women and children, or hop across the street to Mountain Hounds for supplies for your four-legged friends. Continue on to Lavish for casual apparel to keep you cute and comfy during your area explorations (our favorite find: a T-shirt with the slogan Go Outside and Do Things).

Take a left on South Main Street to stock up on gourmet goods at Blue Ridge Olive Oil Co., then circle the square to Artful Ellijay, an interior décor heaven that makes us swoon with its selection of home goods and hand-crafted accessories. Finish your shopping spree at Mountain Treasures, the perfect place to find a gift for anyone on your list, from kids to foodies to outdoor enthusiasts. After your purchase, pop into the back of the store for free tast- ings of local wines and spirits.

How To Spend A Perfect Weekend In The Apple Capital Of Georgia

One of the heavy hitters in the North Georgia small town scene is Ellijay, the Apple Capital of Georgia. Situated 75 minutes from Atlanta and 155 miles from Birmingham, Ellijay is spread out and chock full of agritourism. Visitors come here for the apple markets, you pick ’em farms, farm stalls, and impressive wineries and vineyards. I had the pleasure of staying in a romantic cabin in the woods and exploring the town’s broad landscape and sometimes rugged terrain and had a ball. Here is how to spend a perfect weekend in the Apple Capital of Georgia — Ellijay.

Things To Do In Ellijay

Whether you are coming for a girlfriend getaway, romantic weekend, family get-together, or solo day trip, you are sure to find a good time in this mountainous region bursting with activities. As I mentioned, Ellijay is very spread out, so be prepared to do some driving. Don’t worry; the scenery and attractions are fantastic.

Apple Markets

The country’s top apple-producing states are Washington, Michigan, and New York, but I think Georgia could give them a good run for their money. Apples are everywhere!

Apple Alley is an area that connects the apple houses of Ellijay in one straight line. There are so many of them, and each has a different vibe and unique features. Not only can you buy apples, but you can also pick them, and many have family-fun activities, such as B.J. Reece Orchards, with a petting farm, cow milking, scavenger hunt, pig races, wagon rides, and much more.

I visited R & A Orchards , Ellijay’s year-round market with a cafe, scads of fresh produce, the most apples I’ve ever seen in my life, and really great fried pies. While apple, peach, and cherry are popular choices, I loved the chocolate pecan and pumpkin cream cheese. Yum!

Wine Tasting Rooms

Ellijay has nine wine tasting rooms and vineyards that are highly popular and super fun to visit. A perfect weekend in this town wouldn’t be complete without at least visiting one of them, but I recommend a tasting, even if you share it with a friend.

Cartecay Vineyards is in a refurbished circa 1890s tasting barn. Engelheim Vineyards is in a Bavarian-style tasting room. Ott Farms and Vineyard has live music on weekends, and Chateau Meichtry Family Vineyard & Winery is in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and looks like the cover of a romance novel. The good news — the wines are enjoyable, vineyards friendly, and a great time for all.

If you need suggestions for what to order, I liked Engelheim’s Doxology, a blend with flavors of cherry, spice, and black plum. A four-wine flight runs you $12. At Ott Farms, it was Capture, a petit syrah. Here, a five-wine tasting is only $10.

Local Shopping

You will find some unique locally-owned shops in Ellijay, mainly around the historic downtown. One of the most popular is the Bavarian Chocolatier and Fudge Shop because when you walk in the door, you will absolutely be craving something sweet. I found several ladies’ apparel shops with excellent selections, and the Green Willow Soap shop definitely caught my attention.

Be sure to pop into Main Street Antiques for a treasure trove that will easily take you down the rabbit hole. Live the Trail calls itself a modern-day general store, and I found cards, Christmas decorations, packaged foods, and playful socks that I couldn’t say no to. Downtown Ellijay also has several art galleries and shops.

Delicious Food

I thoroughly enjoyed the tasty food on my Ellijay visit. There are a wide variety of restaurants (the best of which I write about below) with most of my favorites being downtown. You’ll find traditional dishes as well as some regional specialties and many ethnic choices. Gourmet products are abundant, too, in the apple markets, some tasting rooms, and many downtown shops.

Pro Tip: The restaurants in Ellijay are busy, so try to make a reservation, if possible, and practice patience while waiting for your table.

Help The Animals

We spotted Build An Ark Animal Rescue , a huge property littered with all different sorts of rescued animals, during our drive around Ellijay. This interactive farm is both an animal rescue and hospice sanctuary and is highly regarded by the locals. Admission is $7 per person, and they will give you food to share with the farm animals. Please note that the animal rescue is closed to the public for inclement weather.

There are 120 rescued animals on the farm ranging from horses, sheep, and goats to alpacas, pigs, and puppies. The animals are used for therapy at nursing homes and working with adults and children with special needs — what a fantastic mission.

Go Mountain Biking

Ellijay is the Mountain Bike Capital of Georgia, and the mural outside of Cartecay Bike Shop proclaims it. While I am no mountain biker, there are apparently over 60 mountain bike trails, with the Cartecay Loop being one of the most popular. Enjoy the primitive, doubletrack, and singletrack trails in Ellijay’s scenic roads.

Explore Mountain Valley Farm

This is one of the best agritourism offerings in Ellijay. Shoppers come to Mountain Valley Farm for grass-fed and free-range meats, farm-fresh eggs, locally made cheeses, handmade ice cream, and gourmet food products. Petting a few animals while I was there was the best part for me. Oh, and they have maple bacon ice cream — that’s a winning flavor!

Pro Tip: Many of these businesses are off the grid for cell service, or were to me. Pay attention to how you got there in case you can’t get your directions to work for the first part of the return trip.

Best Restaurants In Ellijay

Ellijay has some mighty good eats, and all for the sake of research, I tried many of them for you. Here are the details about my food experience, as well as what I really liked about each.

Country Corner Kitchen

I heard about Country Corner Kitchen from locals in five different places, so I knew we had to go there. Country Corner Kitchen serves perfect southern biscuit breakfast sandwiches, traditional breakfast items, and even a Cuban breakfast sandwich. They also serve real Cuban coffee, a jewel in the North Georgia Mountains. We loved the friendly service, reasonable prices, and tasty food so much that we made it our daily breakfast stop.

Ellijay Wood-Fired Pizza

Dinner is terrific from Ellijay Wood-Fired Pizza , where the pie creations are part scrumptious and part genius. After researching menus online, this is one place I knew I had to try. Start your meal with the specialty fondue — oh, so good. Mine was artichoke, so gooey and creamy that I finished mopping it up with my pizza crust. And speaking of pizza, I’m sure you can’t go wrong with any of the choices, but I had the mild Italian sausage and peppadew pepper pizza. It was amazing, and I had enough leftovers the next day.

The Roof

The Roof is the only place in town where you can dine on a rooftop and capture such amazing scenic pictures. The service is attentive and professional, and the menu is very well curated. I couldn’t wait to try the Bologna Sliders (with truffle dijonnaise), a regional dish from The Roof that was exceptional in every bite. Then came the Shrimp and Grits, really well done and a perfect portion size. My husband had the recommended Rooftop Chicken Sandwich and loved it. You get your choice of any one side dish with it, too.

A perfect place for any meal of the day is Cantaberry , where my husband and I went for bowls of soup to beat the wintery weather. Cantaberry’s soup, salad, and sandwich combinations are plentiful, and the soup varieties change daily. I had the chicken wild rice and he chose tomato basil, plus half sandwiches. I can vouch for the really tasty tuna salad, and he had every bit as good chicken salad. Cantaberry also gives you several bread choices — a nice touch.

Save room for a slice of the super tall layered cakes that also look divine.

Cabins And Hotels In Ellijay

We passed the Ellijay River Bed and Breakfast and I immediately saved the location for a future trip. The beautiful luxury adults-only property is a 1915 Craftsman home with a superb riverside setting and is within walking distance to downtown. Free WiFi and southern breakfast are included in your stay. You can take your breakfast on the veranda, Magnolia deck, or riverside deck. Another appealing choice is the Coosawattee River Resort, with an indoor pool. There are four rooms to choose from, and the Magnolia Room has my name all over it.

If you are traveling with your camper or RV, Diamond Lure Campground and RV Resort looks really appealing. The setting is beautiful, and this property really intrigued my husband, who still hasn’t stopped talking about it.

For those just wanting a reasonably priced motel experience, Ellijay Inn can take care of all your needs.

Pro Tip: Downtown Ellijay has free parking and clean public restrooms.

We recently spent a weekend in Ellijay GA , exploring all that this wonderful and historic town has to offer. We shopped in the historic downtown, ate at some of the best restaurants, hiked, visited waterfalls, searched for Bigfoot, tasted local wines, and so much more!

Visit one of the many Apple Orchards

Ellijay GA is known as the " Apple Capital of Georgia " for good reason. The town is surrounded by beautiful apple orchards that offer visitors a chance to pick their own apples, enjoy delicious apple treats, and experience the charm of small-town Georgia all at the same time!

One of the most popular orchards in Ellijay is B.J. Reece Orchards. This family-owned orchard offers a wide variety of apples, as well as pumpkins, strawberries, and blueberries. Visitors can pick their own fruit, take a tractor ride, and enjoy delicious apple cider donuts and fried apple pies. B.J. Reece Orchards is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Ellijay.

Another great option is Hillcrest Orchards , which has been in operation for over 70 years. This orchard offers a petting zoo, a playground, and a corn maze in addition to apple picking. Visitors can also enjoy live music, hayrides, and delicious apple cider.

For a more unique experience, Ott Farms and Vineyard offers not only apple picking but also wine tastings. This family-owned orchard has been in operation for over 100 years and offers a wide variety of apples, including some rare and unique varieties.

R & A Orchards is another popular destination in Ellijay. This orchard offers not only apple picking, but also a farm store where visitors can purchase fresh produce, baked goods, and other local products.

Search for Sasquatch at Expedition Bigfoot

If you enjoy mystery, folklore, and history, be sure to visit Expedition Bigfoot , a Bigfoot Museum located just a few minutes outside of Ellijay in Cherry Log GA.

This unique and interesting museum explores the legend of Sasquatch and offers a fascinating look at the history of the area.

To be honest, we visited thinking it would be some cheesy tourist trap and not very interesting. Were we ever wrong! Expedition Bigfoot is a very nice museum, full of interesting exhibits, Bigfoot history, and some videos that will make you go "hmm".

While the museum isn't huge, it's definitely packed full of Bigfoot sighting information, artifacts, prints, and more. Different exhibits highlight how "Bigfoot" like creatures have been seen all around the world. The same type of creature, just different names, like Yeti.

They also have a really nice store full of Bigfoot memorabilia, souvenirs, shirts, mugs, stuffed animals, and more. They feature art and books by local Ellijay and Blue Ridge artists as well. We left with some shirts, socks, a book by a local author, and some Bigfoot chocolate.

While you may not believe in Bigfoot when you leave, you'll definitely be wondering if it's true and talking about it. We're not sure if Bigfoot exists or not, but something sure is going on.

Expedition Bigfoot was one of our favorite best things to do in Ellijay GA.

Go back in time at the Georgia Pinball Museum

If you're looking for a unique and entertaining experience in Ellijay, GA, look no further than the Georgia Pinball Museum . This museum is a must-visit destination for anyone who loves classic pinball machines.

Located just a short drive from Ellijay GA and right next door to Expedition Bigfoot, the Georgia Pinball Museum is a one-of-a-kind attraction that features vintage pinball machines from the 1950s to the 1990s. Visitors can play all of the machines, which are restored and maintained to ensure that they play just like they did when they were first released.

They have a number of classic machines pinball fans will love, including our favorite Kiss, Twilight Zone, wide-body machines, and the Black Knight!

The Georgia Pinball Museum is open seven days a week from 11am - 6pm, and admission is affordable, making it a great choice for families, couples, or groups of friends.

Explore Historic Downtown Ellijay

Of course, no visit to Ellijay would be complete without exploring the historic downtown. Downtown Ellijay even has a town center with a roundabout and fountain in the middle. The old town hall is there as well, and it very much resembles Hill Valley from the classic movie Back to the Future!

The charming downtown area is home to a variety of shops, boutiques, restaurants, galleries, and specialty stores. It's the perfect place to spend an afternoon or evening.

Many of the shops are located in buildings that date back to the 20th century, and you'll even find the classic old advertisement paintings on the side walls of buildings, which we enjoyed taking photos of.

There really is something for everyone in downtown Ellijay. We really enjoyed walking around downtown and exploring all of the shops and stores. We found antiques (more on that later), candy shops, soap shops, a dog store, and a home decor shop just to name a few.

Two of our favorite stores were Green Willow Soap , where everything is handmade right there in the store, and The Bavarian Chocolatier which was full of goodies!

You should definitely plan to spend some time here. To make your visit easier, be sure to stop by the Welcome Center and grab a map that has all of the stores marked. This really helped us get around and made sure we saw everything.

Hiking Trails Near Ellijay GA

Ellijay has a number of really great hiking trails that are just a short drive from downtown Ellijay. Popular Trails include:

Bear Creek Trail in Chattahoochee National Forest - Located in Bear Creek Recreation Area, about 30 minutes from down Ellijay, this trail will take you to the famous Gennett Poplar, the second largest tree in the state of Georgia. Roundtrip to the tree and back is about 3-miles, and a moderate hike.

The Stone Tower Loop at Fort Mountain State Park - This 1-mile loop trail is popular for families and takes you to the old stone Fire Tower and natural rock gardens. The trail is moderate in difficulty.

The Lake Loop Trail at Fort Mountain State Park - This 1.2-mile loop trail is open to both hikers and mountain bikers. The trail goes around Fort Mountain’s lake. We found it best to hike this trail clockwise to avoid the steep grade. This is a really nice, relaxing, and beautiful hike.

Waterfalls near Ellijay GA

While not well known for waterfalls , there are a few waterfalls worth venturing out to and not far from downtown Ellijay.

Fall Branch Falls off the Benton MacKaye Trail - Located off a long and scenic service road, this is a short and moderate hike out to 75' tall Fall Branch Falls. The falls have two large cascades. This is a popular trail, so expect lots of company as you hike out.

Base of Falls Trail - Amicalola Falls State Park - Amicalola Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in the Georgia Blue Ridge. It's also the tallest waterfall in Georgia at 729 feet. The hike is short, but strenuous due to the nearly 200 stairs required to reach the base of the falls. The total hike length is 1 mile.

Tumbling Waters Nature Trail at Carters Lake - While technically not a waterfall, it is a series of very pretty cascades. The hike is 1-mile roundtrip, and very moderate. You'll also cross a 30' tall wooden bridge, offering beautiful lake and creek views.

Taste Local Wine at Grapes and Ladders Winery

Grapes and Ladders is a beautiful winery located just a short drive from downtown Ellijay GA. The vineyard offers a variety of wines for adults, wine slushes (which are amazing), and even grape slushies for teens and kids. Yes, Grapes and Ladders is a family-friendly vineyard!

They offer a number of wines from sweet to dry, including both whites and reds and even a really nice port. We're huge Cabernet Sauvignon fans, and theirs is one of the best we've ever had!

They offer wine tastings, wine by the glass, and bottles of wine. You can enjoy your wine in the indoor seating area, which is full of comfy chairs, or sit outside on the beautiful deck overlooking the vineyard and mountain views!

Grapes and Ladders is a casual and relaxing small vineyard, with super friendly staff and engaged owners. The vineyard is beautiful, the wines fantastic, and the vineyard building is a great place to just grab a glass of wine and relax. They even have live music on the weekends.

We really enjoyed our visit, and think you will too! We even purchased a bottle of wine and port to bring back to our vacation cabin , where we staying for the weekend and literally just down the road from Grapes and Ladders.

Go Shopping in Ellijay

When it comes to shopping in Ellijay, we have a variety of options to choose from. Whether you're looking for unique gifts, antiques, or local produce, you'll find it.

One of our favorite places to shop is in downtown Ellijay. The historic downtown area is home to numerous shops and boutiques that offer a wide range of products. From handmade crafts to clothing and jewelry, you're sure to find something that catches your eye.

If you would like to experience local culture and support local artists, businesses and craft makers, don't miss the Ellijay Farmers & Artisans Market .

The market is each Saturday from 8:30am - 12:30pm in the parking lot behind the downtown Ellijay Welcome Center. When we recently visited, there were 6 rows of vendors with a wide array of goods from custom-made jewelry, home decor items, soaps, body and bath products, and of course fresh produce.

For those who want to experience the local culture, we recommend checking out the farmers' markets. Ellijay is known for its fresh produce, and the farmers' market is a fantastic way to sample some of the best fruits and vegetables in the area. You can also see locally-made crafts and baked goods as well.

We really enjoyed visiting each of the local vendors, browsing their goods, and talking with them. Everyone made us feel so welcome. Of course, we had to take home a few items, including a necklace for our daughter and some homemade soap.

Discover Bygones at Antique Shops

If you're a fan of antiques, you will love Ellijay GA. Ellijay is almost as well known for it's wide variety of antique stores as it is its Apples!

There are a number of very nice antique shops located throughout the city, each with its own unique collection of items. Many stores are located in the historic downtown area, like Antiques on North Main , Linda's Outback Antiques , and Main Street Antiques & Collectibles .

There are also a number of Antique shops outside of the main town area as well.

In all of these antique shops, you can find everything from vintage furniture to rare collectibles. You can literally spend an entire finding and browsing the wonderful antique shops in Ellijay.

Return to the visitor center with your stamped passport, and get your prize (one per customer)

We're foodies, and one of the highlights of our visits to cities and towns in the Blue Ridge Mountains is checking out the local restaurant scene. Here are just a few of our picks for the best restaurants in Ellijay GA :

Bev's Diner

Bev's Diner serves up some of the best burgers and fries we've had anywhere, all with a 50s-style diner atmosphere. The menu is full of different types of burgers. All of them are made from local Ellijay beef, made to order, and the fries are hand-cut.

The staff was super friendly and helpful, and the shakes and floats are divine. Be sure to try the butterscotch shake. You'll thank us later.

The Pink Pig

Located in Cherry Log, just outside of Ellijay GA, you'll be hard-pressed to find better BBQ and fixins than at the Pink Pig . The folks here smoke the ribs, pulled pork, and even brisket to perfection.

Go early and don't forget your appetite. The Pink Pig is open seven days a week, so be sure to stop by for the best BBQ around! We will definitely be back.

For a unique dining experience, head up to the top of the tallest building in downtown Ellijay GA to The Roof . The restaurant and bar are literally on the top of a building providing exceptional views of downtown Ellijay and the surrounding mountains.

The food and service were good, and they even serve local fresh Trout. You'll definitely want to have a drink or meal here while enjoying the great views.

Ellijay Coffeehouse

We love a cozy and warm coffee house that serves great coffee, and Ellijay Coffeehouse is the bomb. If you're looking for a cozy spot to grab a cup of coffee or tea, this is the place to go.

They have a great selection of drinks, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches all served up in a comfortable atmosphere that is perfect for waking up and relaxing. The service was top-notch, with super friendly and professional staff. Try the lemon loaf and the breakfast Pannini!

Located in downtown Ellijay, BEAU-tiful Creations is a walk-in art studio where artistic ability is required! They provide everything you need, including canvases, door hangers, birdhouses, magnets, paper, jewelry, and more.

Not far from Ellijay is Carter Lake , which provides a number of outdoor activities including boating.

Boating at Carter Lake near Ellijay, GA is a popular activity for both locals and tourists. Carter Lake is the deepest lake in Georgia, with depths reaching up to 450 feet, and its sparkling waters and rugged shoreline provide beautiful surroundings for a variety of recreational opportunities.

For those looking to rent a boat, Carters Lake Marina & Resort is the place to go. They offer pontoon boat rentals for a day on the lake, and if you plan to stay overnight, they also offer pontoon/cabin packages.

Magic in the Mountains: Plan the Ultimate North Georgia Road Trip

As the Appalachian Mountains cascade down the East Coast, punctuating the landscape with peaks and valleys, they find at their southern reach a stretch of small towns so charming that they seem as if they've appeared from the pages of a storybook. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia, they invite visitors to wander picturesque downtown districts and explore the rolling countryside where autumn weekends can be spent harvesting apples, riding aboard a scenic railway, and strolling through the changing leaves.

The best way to reach these spots is a leisurely drive along the Georgia Mountain Parkway . This local-favorite road, also known as State 515, begins just south of Jasper and meanders for 76 miles past Ellijay, Blue Ridge, Blairsville, Young Harris, and Hiawassee as it nears the Georgia-North Carolina border. Embark on the rambling route, and you'll see it's easy to embrace every diversion, from canoeing, fishing, and hiking to shopping and enjoying local restaurants.

Pick Apples in Ellijay

Driving north along the parkway, you'll soon find yourself in Ellijay, the "Apple Capital of Georgia," where the area's farms offer all the fruit picking, hayrides, slices of pie, and cups of spiced cider you could dream of. Orchards such as B.J. Reece and Hillcrest are the places to be in fall, when visitors arrive to fill their baskets at the you-pick farms. If you're not interested in gathering your own, they also have preplucked bushels and pecks for sale. Come back on the weekends for big apple-themed festivities with food and live music. Ride the Rails in Blue Ridge

Farther along the parkway in Blue Ridge, you can find Mercier Orchards , a 300-acre property that dates to 1943 and is also a popular spot for apple picking. The downtown area is home to several craft breweries, local shops, eateries such as Black Sheep Restaurant and Harvest on Main , and a handful of places to stay. The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway is headquartered here. Visitors can hop aboard its train cars to see the changing leaves on an unhurried, 26-mile route along the Toccoa River. The train hub is located on Depot Street around the corner from the Blue Ridge Inn Bed & Breakfast , an 11-room Victorian featuring a front porch lined with rocking chairs. See the Sights in Blairsville

Traveling along the parkway soon brings you to Blairsville, another town that's filled with opportunities for outdoor adventure. At 4,784 feet high, nearby Brasstown Bald is Georgia's tallest peak. Located about 17 miles from Blairsville, the mountain rewards hikers with its panoramic views of the Chattahoochee–Oconee National Forests, which light up in stunning hues of red, orange, and yellow during autumn. The area's woodlands surround scenic lakes and rivers, including Lake Chatuge at the northern end of the parkway and Lake Trahlyta, which is situated along Wolf Creek near Brasstown Bald and provides lots of great fishing as well as a waterfall and hiking trails.

North Georgia is also home to the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, which begins at Springer Mountain and, like clockwork, sees adventurous hikers setting out on journeys north. Some are bound for a few days of camping and scrambling, while others trek more than 2,190 miles to Maine's Mount Katahdin at the northernmost end of the trail. Myriad paths wind through the Georgia forests, dipping into valleys and rocketing up slopes, leading to spots like Amicalola Falls State Park, Long Creek Falls, and Fall Branch Falls.

Pack a Sweater, and Book A Stay

Continuing past the eastern end of the parkway to Julep Farms in Dillard , visitors will find a "modern farm resort," a pleasant place to rest, relax, and explore. Its beautifully appointed cottages are nestled on 22 idyllic acres and are accompanied by a market, restaurant, and bar, making it a lovely spot to spend a weekend or launch a road trip.

The blend of small-town warmth, plenty of outdoor adventure, and magnificent fall scenery makes this stretch of Georgia countryside the perfect getaway. The mountains beckon year-round, but their foliage, festivals, and lively communities make the area a destination to look forward to each year when the air cools and the leaves begin to turn.

North Georgias Best Scenic Drives And Day Trips

Destination Dahlonega

The Dahlonega drive begins and ends at the intersection of Georgia Highway 5 and 515 in Blue Ridge. This route was originally produced by the United States Forest Service. The 102-mile round-trip travels from Blue Ridge through the Chattahoochee National Forest to Dahlonega, a mountain town bustling with history and culture. You'll pass expansive countryside awash with scenic views, especially during the autumn months.

The suggested route from Fannin County Chamber highlights worthwhile stops along the way that can extend your adventure to an all-day excursion, like the swinging bridge at the Toccoa River, Wilscot Gap at The Benton MacKaye Trail, and Suches - a popular route for motorcyclists. Past Dahlonega, as you wind toward Ellijay, don't miss Amicalola Falls State Park in Dawsonville - home to the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi River, at 729 feet. Dawsonville also offers easy access to the southern end of the legendary Appalachian Trail.

A day in Dahlonega offers much in the way of family fun. Known for its role in gold rush history, you can even go panning for gold yourself at modern-day roadside gem mines! Dahlonega is home to points of interest like the Consolidated Gold Mine, the Dahlonega Gold Mine Museum, and the preserved Lumpkin County Jail, as well as a host of wineries and vineyards. Downtown Dahlonega hosts a wide array of locally-owned shops, boutiques, art galleries, and eateries, with traditional Appalachian treasures, historical authenticity, and true Southern hospitality.

For an "abbreviated" alternative that focuses on the scenery of the Georgia mountains and countryside consider the picturesque 27-mile drive through Morganton, and Dial. Potential stops along the way include hiking trails, farmsteads, and recreation along Lake Blue Ridge and the Toccoa River.

Destination Blairsville

Blairsville is the ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts, just east of Blue Ridge. From Highway 515, take a right onto Windy Ridge Road, and then a left on Old Highway 76. Proceed just over 21 miles to Blairsville. To return, you can back-track this route, or simply hop onto Highway 515 for a more direct path back to Blue Ridge.

The path from Blue Ridge to Blairsville is part of the Georgia Mountain Parkway, a scenic, 65-mile drive along I-575 spanning from Atlanta north through Jasper, Ellijay, Blue Ridge, Blairsville, McCaysville, Young Harris, and Hiawassee. This route offers access to outdoor activities such as whitewater rafting, tubing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, and fishing, as well as sights like rolling mountains, apple orchards, and wildflowers in bloom. Many consider Brasstown Bald to be the highlight of the journey, as the highest natural peak in the State of Georgia. Start point approximately one hour from blue ridge and ellijay. beginning in dalton, this 54-mile scenic driving route features rolling pastures and forests, country roads, and stunning mountain views. points of interest along the way include the civil war sites and working 19th-century gristmill and cotton gin at prater’s mill in dalton; historic sites and natural wonders at fort mountain state park in chatsworth; and fresh farm adventures in ellijay..

For further adventures in the Cohutta Wilderness , consider a rugged journey comprised of winding gravel roads and steep grades from Blue Ridge through the thick, unspoiled hardwood mountain forests to secluded Lake Conasauga. Four-wheel drive SUVs are recommended.

The Southern Highroads Trail meanders through the Appalachian Mountains in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The full route spans 360 miles with North Georgia highlights including Blue Ridge, Ellijay, Chatsworth, Blairsville, Young Harris, Hiawassee, Clayton, Mountain City, and Dillard. Georgia designated this Scenic Highway in 1996, through some of the most natural, remote areas of the state.

Stretching 469 miles through Virginia and North Carolina, the Blue Ridge Parkway is said to be “America’s Favorite Drive", boasting endless vistas throughout the Great Smoky Mountains and the Appalachian Highlands. The parkway begins approximately two hours from Blue Ridge in Cherokee, with highlights including the highest mountain peak in the eastern United States (Mount Mitchell), the deepest gorge east of the Grand Canyon (Linville Gorge), and the highest waterfall east of the Rockies (Whitewater Falls).

Of course, you could always leave the driving to someone else and take a journey on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway . After all, there's no wrong way to take in the mountain scenery and explore!

As a child of the Blue Ridge Mountains, I grew up on twisty, curvy mountain roads. My paw-paw Don had a saying that, “anyone can make a straight road, but it takes a damn good one to make a curvy road.”

To this day, I’m not sure if he meant that as a compliment to the engineers or a lament about the lack of any straight roads in the mountains. However, one thing is definitely true: the curvy roads in the Appalachian mountains offer some of the most interesting and best scenic road trips in the USA !

There are scenic routes on wide-open divided highways and beautiful natural scenes along some of the secluded one-lane gravel roads. The drives featured below are all on paved roads and travel past some of the most scenic places in Georgia .

There are many beautiful roads throughout the Georgia mountains, but some of the most recognized are the designated scenic drives along Georgia state highways. These 2-lane highways are well maintained and easy to find on a map.

North Georgia Dragon Eyes Scenic Route

One of the most famous (and most curvy) scenic drives in North Georgia is known as Georgia’s Dragon Eyes . This thrilling drive consists of 2 twisty loops (the dragon’s “eyes”) and boasts 77 miles, 715 curves , and six mountain gaps!

Northern Loop / Russell-Brasstown National Scenic Byway

The northern/northeastern loop of Dragon Eyes is very closely aligned with the Russell-Brasstown National Scenic Byway. The main difference is that the Russell-Brasstown route includes an additional stop at Georgia’s highest peak, Brasstown Bald (4,374′). This section of the scenic route is just over 40 miles long and includes almost 40 switchbacks !

Enjoy numerous natural points of interest along the route, including:

Brasstown Bald – visit Georgia’s tallest peak and see 360° panoramic views from the observation deck ($5 / person)
Anna Ruby Falls – 0.5-mile hike ($3 / person ages 16+)
Dukes Creek Falls – 2.0-mile hike ($4 / vehicle)
Raven Cliff Falls – 5.0-mile hike ($5 / vehicle)

Southern Loop / Scenic Loop 60 / 180 / 129 / 19

This scenic route goes through 3 gaps (Neels Gap 3,120′, Woody Gap 3,183′, and Wolfpen Gap 3,310′) and intersects the famous Appalachian Trail at both Woody Gap and Neels Gap. Stop at the well-known Mountain Crossings outfitters at Neels Gap and see the only place where the Appalachian Trail passes through the inside of the building (it’s the only covered portion of the entire 2,100-mile trail)!

Continue the twisty ride on Georgia’s Dragon along the Suches route. Stope at Chestatee Overlook and Woody Gap scenic overlook to give the driver a chance to pause and enjoy the wide-open mountain and valley views. Notable points of interest along this route include:

Southern Highroads Trail

The Southern Highroads Trail is a multi-state route that runs through mountain towns and tourist attractions in 4 states (Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee).

Take US Highway 76 West from the South Carolina border all the way to apple country in Ellijay, then turn right to wander North on Highway 411 towards Tennessee. Stop along the way to enjoy the scenic Georgia towns, including Clayton, Tiger, and Blue Ridge. The Southern Highroads Trail route overlaps/includes many of North Georgia’s other scenic routes, including Georgia Scenic Highway 197, Cohutta-Chattahoochee Scenic Byway, and Highway 441 from Baldwin to Clayton.

Georgia Mountain Parkway (GA 515 / US 76)

One of the most accessible scenic drives in the Georgia mountains is the Georgia Mountain Parkway along GA 515 / US 76. These scenic highways of North Georgia start where I-575 ends, then travel along into the beautiful North Georgia mountains and towns. This 4-lane divided highway is the main thoroughfare that connects the mountain towns of Ellijay, Blue Ridge, Blairsville, and Hiawassee.

Head into the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest and you’ll be rewarded with some pretty killer turns. Get out of your car, though, and you’ll see gorgeous scenery like this. The highway was a moonshine route back in the day (the day in this case being Prohibition) but is now known more as a destination for artisanal pottery, stained glass, and wood furniture. Moccasin Creek State Park is your go-to for camping, hiking, and fishing — there’s even a trout fishery you can tour — and Lake Burton is where you can put a day trip inside your road trip with boating, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and all the lake-related activities.

Safety on Mountain Roads

These scenic drives in North Georgia are free to travel, suitable for most well-maintained cars (4-wheel drive is not required), and remain open year-round.

As you use this guide as a scenic road trip planner, keep in mind that the roads are busiest during the Fall when the leaves change colors and put on a spectacular show. Be aware that you will need to share the curvy mountain roads with bicycles and motorcycles and expect more riders during milder weather (Spring and Fall).

Be Prepared

While these curvy mountain roads are a beautiful thrill ride for many people, there are ways to make the ride more enjoyable for everyone. Follow the steps below to ensure passengers are comfortable and safe on the scenic highways in Georgia.

Avoid Motion Sickness

For anyone prone to motion sickness, it is wise to take precautions to avoid feeling queasy on the road.

Take motion sickness medication BEFORE your trip (note that some medications may cause drowsiness)
Let people who are prone to motion sickness ride in the front seat or drive
Avoid looking down (at the phone, map, etc.) when riding on curvy roads
Provide motion sickness bags or containers (some roads have no shoulder to pull over for sick passengers)

Make sure that your vehicle is road-ready before heading out on your scenic drive. Do a car safety check and carry safety equipment to help in case of emergencies.

Fill up with gas and check fluid levels (oil, coolant, washer fluid, brake fluid, power steering, transmission fluid)
Check lights, signals, windshield wipers, tires (tread and air pressure), and brakes
Clean car windows inside and out before departing (clean windows at each stop for the best views possible)
Georgia is a “hands-free” state
Drivers may not use their hands to make calls or texts

These scenic drives in the Appalachian mountains look splendid! Having grown up in Calgary, I almost never look at other mountain attractions because Banff is so close. But seeing this article made me realize that the world has much more than Banff. It sounds like the roads are pretty safe and well-maintained after hearing you say a 4-wheel drive isn’t needed. Do you think the roads would be suitable for sports cars? It’s always been a dream of mine to drive something like a Porsche through curvy scenic routes.

The trails look amazing and the Gerogia’s Dragon Eyes with 715 would be my choice I think with sweeping curves to be enjoyed on my a motor-cycle. I wondered if there were times of year when these are not passible? My guess is that the Autumn would be the best for the clour of the leaves alone, but maybe you would suggest the better season?

I do have some friends who suffer from motion sickness, and they definitely have a different perspective on how exciting the curvy roads feel! I think that as long as you know what to expect and make sure to plan for it, you’ll have a nice time on the roads.

Just to be clear regarding pricing, there isn’t a “fee” for driving these scenic roads, but you’ll need to make your own arrangements for transportation. Any charges listed in the article are parking or entry fees for optional stops that can be made along the way.

I would say that finding an area any more beautiful for a day-trip would be difficult to do. I would expect most people would want to carry a picnic lunch with them as the venture out on a day’s outing. The scenery you provided for fall in the Appalachian Mountains is quite beautiful and gives an example of what to expect when driving through some of the routes you suggested.

Could you not also go on one of these day-trips as you explore the wineries. Just be sure to have a designated driver for the occasion.

Hi Jerry, you have some great ideas! The routes between vineyards will often involve driving along one of the North Georgia scenic roads, making the journey as lovely as the destination(s).

Mountains, valleys, and forests are really my thing. But unfortunately, there are no such beautiful routes in Belgium (where I live), unless in our local Ardennes where it can also be worth the effort.

I only know America from the movies on TV and I love to be able to admire the beautiful landscapes in some of those movies when a family drives the car along winding roads. For example, I am now thinking of the movie “The Shining” where the family makes their way to the hotel.

I can understand that you are a super fan of Georgia if you are based there. It must be really beautiful. I am an angler myself and I love nature very much.

Hello! While it’s not too challenging to get to the highest peak of Georgia at Brasstown Bald, you will definitely have your work cut out for you in states like Alaska, California, and Hawaii!

There are other options available for motion sickness. Bonine is a different brand of highly-rated OTC medication and the Sea-Band Acupressure Wristband also gets fairly high reviews!

Very well done. I am living in Kentucky but am originally from Massachusetts. And some of your pics and descriptions remind me so much of the White Mountains in the New Hampshire area. You have a lot of info about the views at certain spots and your pics just add to it. I know spending a lot of time in the mountains that Fall is the best time because of the foliage. The White Mountains have a highway called the Kangamangus (not sure if I spelt it right) but it’s a very dangerous highway. It’s barely wide enough for 2 lanes of traffic. On one side you have the mountain and the other is a total drop. Have traveled it in a snow storm once and moved very slow due to low visibility and the chance of sliding over the edge. Hi Shannon! A convertible is so much fun on the mountain roads! One of my favorite small lunch stops is sitting outside on the patio at Riverside Tavern on a nice day. There are also a lot of scenic waterfront restaurants in the area that are worth checking out, depending on what type of dining you are looking for.

It looked like you had a lot if adventures when growing up. The area sounds super fun and entertaining for many. I bet it attracts a lot of tourists.

Taking trips to this place will be nice for any family. From the images it looks peaceful and quiet. I would love to have one of those trips with my family.

Now with the condition the world is in, family holidays will have to wait.

I’m not going to say that a person will fall asleep from such a long post, because let me say this.. If the person is a traveler and wants good choices for points of interest, and if the person wants a guide and helpful maps, this site has it all. I found myself reading the whole thing. I was THAT interested! It blew my mind how much knowledge was in one post. And at this point, I haven’t even clicked the pull-down buttons yet! 🙂 This tells me the person posting this is an experienced traveler and KNOWS what the travelers need in the info realm. Then, at the very bottom, they go into talking about Safety Practices and even had Adsense Amazon ads that dealt with safety items, etc. Again, On Point here! Oh, and BTW? The air pump they advertise on the bottom I do have and it IS a great accessory to have for your car.

Hi, There is truly an incredible choice of drives here. I’ve only once been to Georgia on a long business trip many years ago. I did take a day to visit and climb Stone Mountain though. The advice provided here clearly comes from long experience of how best to prepare for the mountains and all that can go wrong. It made me think of all the times I have driven through mountains and while things mostly went well I remember times when that was not the case. I drove once from Geneva north to Germany and it suddenly started snowing. I had winter tyres so I felt prepared. There was not much traffic on the roads and the combination of fresh snow on ice-cold roads made for treacherous conditions. I think the scariest thing I saw was when I was climbing an incline and I saw the car behind me just spun around for no apparent reason. I was very careful after that. I think that experience taught me to respect driving in the mountains. I would recommend anyone reading this to take the advice and precautions for mountain driving seriously. How, you have just taken me on a lovely scenic tour of the Georgia mountains and what spectacular views. The 27 mile Georgia scenic 197 seems to be perfect for a day trip. If one wanted to do a weekend break or longer trip, would there be affordable accommodation along the way, or is it better to prepare yourself for camping while enjoying the scenic splendors.

There are a wide variety of options for places to stay in North Georgia. There are rental cabins right along Scenic 197 or there are camping options in the area as well. It all depends on how you prefer to travel! Enjoy!!

Curvy roads, wow, what a pleasure and what absolute therapy! Even when you are really feeling down, taking a drive along curvy roads, especially ones that traverse woody places such as these, and more so when there has been some rain, can bring you right back to your healthy, bubbly self. Some may say curves increase the chances of road traffic accidents. But the reality is, as long as you don’t attempt to get too much adrenaline pumping through your body by speeding, the curves actually help to keep you awake and alert. Long stretches of straight roads are notorious for sending drivers to sleep!

And having four distinctive seasons also makes driving along roads like these, both for leisure and business, absolutely exciting and not monotonous. Does Georgia have 4 distinctive seasons?

Hello! Georgia certainly has all 4 seasons, but fortunately the winters are not too extreme (not too much snow or ice). The scenic roads are best enjoyed when the weather and roads are dry.

Wow! The views look spectacular! I’ve been thinking of doing a road trip, and this is one of my options along with the scenic highway along the Pacific coast that stretches from California to Washington.

I can imagine what it looks like. The only thing that scares me a little is the winding roads. I’m not used to driving like that. I remember when I went to a scenic drive near Austin, and my heart almost exploded lol.

Realistically, how much time would you need for such a drive? I’d love to tour it all. I love taking in the views and taking lots of pictures.

Hi Enrique, The peak time of year for these drives is in the Autumn when the trees explode with color. It’s also a nice drive during other times of year when the weather is nice. Keep in mind that the North Georgia mountains do occasionally receive snow, but it’s generally does not last very long. I would not recommend taking a scenic drive when it is snowing — that is a phenomenon that is best enjoyed from your home or cabin.

Hi Marsha, Winter is the quietest season in the Georgia mountains and very nice place to escape from colder environments. The Georgia mountains do occasionally get snow, but generally speaking the weather is mild and very nice for a scenic drive or a hike.

Scenic drives are definitely a very good thing to find in nature. I live in Serbia in Europe and there are many such roads in my country. I love to travel by car but it is even better when I walk. Almost every weekend I go hiking with friends. The higher you climb, the more beautiful the view gets and the cleaner the air is, which is a rarity in big cities. I would definitely recommend it to everyone because it is a completely different experience from the usual straight paths. And even if they are steep, adrenaline lovers will enjoy.

In my experience, even locals tend to forget the amazing amount of green space we’re blessed with, which offers endless excellent opportunities for recreation and ecotourism adventures.

But taking day trips from Atlanta is a great way to explore all the beauty the Peach State has to offer, from cool caves, majestic mountains , and dazzling lakes to rushing rivers and wondrous waterfalls .

With hundreds of city parks, more than 40 state parks , and five national parks located in North Georgia alone, the South’s most bustling metropolis also boasts plenty of outdoor activities.

And most of them can be reached in less than two-hour road trips from Atlanta .

1. Amicalola Falls State Park

Our of our family’s favorite North Georgia day trips ever since my daughter was born, Amicalola Falls easily ranks among the most popular places to visit near Atlanta.

This is largely thanks to its easy access, easy hiking trails (some of which are paved with recycled rubber), and 729-foot cascading waterfalls (the tallest east of the Mississippi River).

Amicalola (Cherokee for “tumbling waters”) has seen marked improvements in recent years, including the addition of a new observation deck that provides incredible scenic vistas.

Hardcore backpackers often come this way, making the 8.5-mile hike to Springer Mountain, which marks the southern end of the 2,135-mile Appalachian Trail.

But most visitors go for more casual hikes, fish for freshwater trout in the well-stocked pond, and enjoy a quiet picnic near the base of the falls. It’s a beautiful way to spend a warm spring or autumn day!

2. Apple Picking in Ellijay

Gilmer County is widely known as “the Apple Capital of Georgia,” so it’s no surprise that apple picking ranks among the most popular things to do in Ellijay GA .

Apple picking in Ellijay is best from early September through the end of October, right as the fall colors in North Georgia begin to reach their peak.

There are many great apple orchards in Ellijay GA to choose from for Atlanta day trips, including Hillcrest Orchards, Panorama Orchards, and the Red Apple Barn. But B.J. Reece Orchards is tops among the perennial favorites.

The family-owned farm encompasses 120 acres and offer around 30 different kinds of apples, including Cameo, Candy Crisp, Fuji, Gala, Mutsu, Red Delicious, and Winecrisp.

They usually start offering you-pick apples around Labor Day. But the orchard’s market offers bagged apples, apple cider donuts, “World Famous” fried pies, and other tantalizing treats all year round.

Visiting Reece Orchards is also a family favorite for other reasons, including activities such as a petting zoo, cow milking demonstrations, and old-fashioned wagon rides.

3. Biking the Silver Comet Trail

Formerly the route of the Silver Comet passenger train , this paved recreational trail extends 61.5 miles from the northwest Atlanta suburb of Smyrna all the way west to the Alabama state line.

The city’s first ever rails-to-trails project, the Silver Comet Trail is renowned for its many spectacular scenic vistas as it traverses numerous trestles and bridges.

The trail also offers direct access to Heritage Park, which features more than 14 acres of wetlands and the ruins of Concord Woolen Mill .

Don’t have a bike? No problem! Just rent one from Comet Trail Cycles , which offers full and half-day rentals on carbon road bikes, comfort hybrids, youth bicycles and child trailers.

Of course the path can also be used for hiking, jogging, and rollerblading as well.

Lake Lanier GA - road trips from atlanta

4. Boating/Kayaking on Lake Lanier

Encompassing 38,542 acres in Gainesville, this popular Georgia lake was named after 19th century poet Sidney Lanier.

Lake Lanier was formed when the Buford Dam was created in 1956, with water flowing in from both the Chattahoochee and Chestatee Rivers. It’s the biggest lake in Georgia , with around 700 miles of shoreline.

Recreational activities here include boating, water skiing , swimming, kayaking and standup paddle boarding. There’s also great fishing, with commonly caught species such as bluegill, catfish, redbreast, spotted bass, striped bass, white bass, and walleye.

There are plenty of great picnic spots and camping opportunities on the lake, with 40 parks and 10 campgrounds along the shoreline.

Lake Lanier is home to Georgia’s newest state park, Don Carter State Park , which features 4 miles of hiking trails , a recreational beach, and cabin rentals .

There’s also the upscale Lanier Islands Resort, which offers a variety of lodging options, plenty of lakeside amenities, and one of our favorite North Georgia Christmas events .

5. Black Rock Mountain State Park

Located at an altitude of 3,640 feet along the Eastern Continental Divide, Black Rock Mountain State Park offers extraordinary views of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia.

Located near the town of Clayton, it’s one of the impressive North Georgia attractions, offering 5 hiking trails that range in length from the .10-mile Norma Campbell Cove Trail to the 7.2-mile James E. Edmond Trail.

The most popular is the 2.2-mile Tennessee Rock Trail, which takes you through some of the park’s highest forest . The exceptional views span some 80 miles into North Carolina , South Carolina, and Tennessee.

There are numerous scenic overlooks in the park offering amazing sunrise and sunset vistas, as well as fishing, kayaking/canoeing in Black Rock Lake, and visiting the Foxfire Museum of Appalachian culture and history .

The park is also home to one of the most picturesque campgrounds in the region, as well as our favorite Georgia State Park cabin rentals .

6. Callaway Gardens

Although the Atlanta Botanical Garden will always hold a special place in my heart as a hometown hotspot, Callaway Gardens is a world-class attraction located just 80 miles south of Downtown Atlanta.

One of our favorite romantic getaways in Georgia, Callaway features over 2,500 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens nestled in the southernmost foothills of the Appalachian Mountains .

The ever-popular resort offers four different types of accommodations, 12 restaurants, a 10-mile biking trail, and lots of different nature trails for visitors to explore.

Family-friendly attractions at Callaway include the Azalea Garden, Butterfly Center, Discovery Center, swimming at Robin Lake Beach, and Treetop Adventure Ziplines .

We’re also huge fans of their annual “Fantasy in Lights” holiday celebration, which is one of our favorite Christmas light displays in Georgia .

7. Chasing Waterfalls in Rabun County

There are an estimated 700 waterfalls in the state of Georgia, the vast majority of which are located in the North Georgia mountains .

Every hiker has their personal favorite North Georgia waterfalls . But, for our money, the best place to visit multiple mind-blowing waterfalls in one day is Rabun County, in the northeast corner of the state.

Want easy trails to wondrous waterfalls with very little hiking involved?

Check out Toccoa Falls, Minnehaha Falls , Becky Branch Falls at Warwoman Dell, and Hurricane Falls at Tallulah Gorge (which you can view from the top after a short walk to the Rim Trail).

If you visit Minnehaha, it’s a short drive to the Lake Rabun Beach Campground, where you can hike to Panther Falls and Angel Falls on a moderate 1.75-mile round-trip trail.

Other great waterfalls in the area include Martin Creek Falls (on the same trail as Becky Branch), Dick’s Creek Falls, Ammons Creek Falls, and the Hemlock Falls trail at Moccasin Creek State Park .

8. Check Out the Athens GA Music Scene

The town of Athens GA is best-known for the University of Georgia Bulldogs, whose football team has won 16 conference championships and 4 national championships (including back-to-back wins in 2021 and 2022).

But as a lifelong Georgia resident, I’d say the town is equally noteworthy for having the state’s best live music scene.

In the ’80s, Athens-based bands such as the B-52’s, R.E.M., Pylon, Love Tractor, and Oh-OK (which featured Michael Stipe’s sister, Lynda, and Matthew Sweet) blazed trails for the burgeoning college rock field.

By the ’90s, the town had birthed beloved acts ranging from singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt and Southern rockers Drive-By Truckers to the arty Elephant 6 Collective (Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control, Of Montreal, etc.).

From the Boar’s Head Lounge and The Warehouse to larger venues like the 40 Watt, Classic Center Arena, and Georgia Theatre, there are still lots of good places to see great live music in Athens today.

9. Climb Blood Mountain

One of the most popular North Georgia mountains for hiking , Blood Mountain is the first trail I ever remember hiking with my parents as a young boy.

With an elevation of 4,461 feet (making the highest spot on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia ) and a distance of 4.3 miles round-trip, this is one of the more difficult hiking trails in North Georgia .

From the Byron Reece Trailhead near Neels Gap, the adventure takes you through a creek valley lined with rhododendron and other wildflowers . You’ll meet the Appalachian Trail at .7 mile and head westbound.

The Blood Mountain trail reaches the summit at 2.15 miles, where you can take in jaw-dropping sights of the rolling Blue Ridge Mountains landscape from a huge rocky outcrop.

Once you’ve had time to catch your breath and get your fill of the sensational scenery, the hike retraces the outbound route to return to the trailhead.

Cloudland Canyon Overlook- Waterfall View

10. Cloudland Canyon State Park

This 3,485-acre state park, located 35 miles north of sleepy Summerville GA, is rarely crowded except on peak summer weekends. But it offers a diverse range of activities for outdoor enthusiasts of all fitness levels.

Casual nature lovers can simply stay in the picnic area parking lot, where you can get stunning overviews of the canyon without ever breaking a sweat.

But hardy hikers will love the 4.8-mile West Rim and Waterfalls Trail, which offers more in-depth exploration of the area (which ranges in elevation from 800 to around 2,000 feet).

The gorge was cut into the mountain by Sitton Gulch Creek, producing striking rock outcroppings that are offset by colorful wildflowers . These stunning views grow increasingly spectacular in the autumn months, when the colorful Fall foliage begins to change.

The park really earns its name in the morning, when the rolling fog over the hills makes it seem as if you’re walking in the clouds. In addition to 100+ campsites, they also have recently renovated Cloudland Canyon State Park Cabins and 10 awesome yurts.

Preachers Rock on Appalachian Trail in Georgia - day trips in georgia

11. Day Hiking the Appalachian Trail in Georgia

The Appalachian Trail is one of the most iconic hiking trails in the world, stretching 2,190+ miles across 14 different states. Due to its length, most thru-hikers 5 to 7 months to tackle the entire trail.

Trekking from Georgia to Maine isn’t possible (or advisable) for the average hiker. But the AT in Georgia offers an array of easy, moderate, and strenuous trails that explore some of the state’s most scenic summits.

It’s possible to take day trips from Atlanta to hike parts of the Appalachian Trail in Georgia , which begins at Springer Mountain in Blue Ridge.

The most popular sections include the aforementioned Blood Mountain trail, the Springer Mountain Loop, Preacher’s Rock, and the Long Creek Falls trail .

If you’re up for a more strenuous trekking challenge, there’s the 5.2-mile hike from Dicks Creek Gap to the summit of Powell Mountain, the 8.6-mile Three Forks to Springer Mountain section, and the 14.5-mile stretch from Hogpen Gap to Unicoi Gap.

12. Drive the Richard B Russell Scenic Highway

Though North Georgia doesn’t offer any epic winding roads to rival the Blue Ridge Parkway , the Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway offers a stunningly picturesque mountain route on a much smaller scale.

Also known as Hwy 348, it stretches 23 miles from Helen to Blairsville GA. But it’s easy to extend the drive by heading further north to Young Harris and Hiawassee, or following the larger Russell-Brasstown National Scenic Byway loop (40.6 miles total).

There are plenty of cool things to do along the Richard B. Russell stretch to make a full day of it.

Start the morning fishing or hiking at Smithgall Woods State Park , then head north on Hwy 348 for fairly easy waterfall hikes at Dukes Creek Falls (2 miles round-trip) and Helton Creek Falls (0.3 miles).

If taking a gander at jaw-dropping scenic vistas is more your speed, don’t miss the three roadside scenic overlooks that are located along Hwy 348.

All of them are worth a stop, but our favorite by far is Hogpen Gap, which is located along the Appalachian Trail. It’s a great place for an evening picnic while you soak in the dazzling colors of an amazing sunset!

13. Explore Downtown Blue Ridge GA

One of our favorite Blue Ridge Mountain towns in GA , the charming town of Blue Ridge has long been considered one of the best places to visit near Atlanta.

Founded in 1886, Downtown Blue Ridge offers upscale restaurants , shopping, and culture, including vibrant art galleries , a theatre, and live music on weekends.

There’s an extensive array of outdoor activities nearby, including horseback riding, white water rafting on the Ocoee River, ziplining, and boating and kayaking at Lake Blue Ridge .

There’s also lots of great hiking trails, including the Benton MacKaye Trail, the AT, and several impressive waterfalls near Blue Ridge (including Long Creek Falls, Fall Branch Falls, and Sea Creek Falls ).

To learn more about the Fannin County area, hop aboard the historic Blue Ridge Scenic Railway and take a train ride through North Georgia along the Toccoa River, just as travelers did in the late 19th century.

If you want to extend your visit, there are loads of accommodation options, ranging from local campgrounds to luxurious tree houses and Blue Ridge cabins .

14. Hiking in the Chattahoochee National Forest

The Chattahoochee National Forest encompasses around 867,000 acres of largely pristine land, offering some of the most rewarding opportunities for outdoor adventure in North Georgia .

The forest spans 26 counties and boasts hundreds of miles of hiking trails that lead to wildflower-lined streams, glistening waterfalls , peaceful lakes , and jaw-dropping mountain vistas.

Our favorite easy hiking trails in the National Forest include the 0.8-mile Toccoa Swinging Bridge trail near Blue Ridge, the 0.4-mile Sosebee Cove trail near Blairsville, and the 1-mile Lake Chatuge trail in Hiawassee.

Those seeking moderate hikes in the forest will enjoy the 3-mile Rabun Bald trek near Clayton, the 4.9-mile the Raven Cliff Falls trail near Helen, and the 3-mile Grassy Mountain Tower trail in the Cohutta Wilderness.

Hardy hikers will love the challenging elevation gain offered by the 4.4-mile Yonah Mountain trail in Helen, the 8.4-mile Smith Creek Trail to Anna Ruby Falls , and the 12.9-mile Coosa Backcountry Trail in Vogel State Park.

15. Fly Fishing for Trout

Atlanta anglers seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of the 9 to 5 life often head north of the city, where an array of different rivers and streams await.

There, colder waters provide an ideal habitat for trout, not to mention wildlife such as beaver, waterfowl, raccoons, and white-tail deer.

Experienced fly fishing guides such as River Through Atlanta ’s Chris Scalley can help you find the best hush-hush hotspots, where you can immerse yourself in Mother Nature’s pastoral beauty while also reeling in some tasty supper .

Scalley, who was recognized by Field & Stream magazine as a finalist for their 2007 Heroes of Conservation Awards for his efforts to protect the area’s sport fishery, offers a few tips on the best areas to land a big one.

CCC Stone Tower at Fort Mountain State Park in Ellijay GA

16. Fort Mountain State Park

Located in Chatsworth GA, Fort Mountain State Park makes an excellent North Georgia day trip, offering some of the best hiking near Ellijay GA.

In fact, the #1 thing to do at the state park is to explore its 25+ miles of hiking, horseback riding , and mountain biking trails (which includes 8+ miles on the Gahuti Trail).

If you can only do one, the CCC Fire Tower Combination Loop is our favorite. Its total distance is listed as a mile, but you can easily extend it to around 2 miles.

From the parking lot, take the trail on the right, going past the “Stone Tower Trail” sign and continuing east on the Stone Wall Trail. This takes you on a rarely-traveled path around the Fort Mountain summit, with incredible views and massive boulders.

It eventually connects to the West Overlook Trail, which takes you to an awesome overview of the surrounding landscape.

Retrace your steps and you’ll see signs leading to the 4-story CCC Stone Tower, which was built back in the 1930s. Head back down the mountain from there to see the mysterious stone wall and CCC-built steps.

Mound A at Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site - things to do outside in atlanta

17. Learn Native American History

Before the 1828 Georgia gold rush and Georgia land lotteries , which forced the removal of indigenous people on the tragic Trail of Tears, Cherokee people had lived in the North GA mountains for hundreds of years.

And while you may not learn much about this sad chapter in U.S. history in school, there are plenty of North Georgia day trips that will immerse you in the 100-year history of Native American history.

For the ancient history, check out the Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site in Cartersville.

The prehistoric archaeological site contains one of the largest Indian mounds in North America, which were built by indigenous peoples of the South Appalachian Mississippian culture starting around 900 AD.

For more recent history, visit the New Echota Historic Site in Calhoun.

Established as the capital of the Cherokee Nation in 1825, the town was home to the first Indian language newspaper, the signing of the New Echota Treaty (which relinquished all tribal lands in the Southeast), and the beginning of the Trail of Tears.

Other excellent sites where you can learn more about Native Americans in Georgia include the Track Rock Gap Archeological Site in Blairsville, the Funk Heritage Center at Reinhardt University in Waleska, and the Chieftains Museum/Major Ridge Home in Rome.

Providence Canyon State Park in Lumpkin GA, one of the best day trips from Atlanta

18. Providence Canyon State Park

Located in Lumpkin GA, about two hours south of the Atlanta airport, Providence Canyon State Park is known as “Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon” due to the multi-colored hues of the dynamic landscape.

The vibrant striations in Providence Canyon were formed by gradual erosion of the soil, which was caused by unsustainable farming practices back in the 1800s.

Today, the canyon can be viewed from several great hiking trails , including one that meanders along the rim at the top and others that lead hikers down into the canyon.

Stop by the park’s museum to learn more about the area’s history, or bring a packed lunch to be enjoy at one of the picnic tables or shelters (which are available for rent).

Backpackers are invited to camp overnight along the backcountry trails, but guests can also reserve a camping spot in the state park.

Fall colors in Georgia at Brasstown Bald

19. See 4 States From Brasstown Bald

Brasstown Bald is Georgia’s highest mountain, towering at 4,784 feet above sea level. It’s also arguably the best place in the state to get a view of fall colors in the North Georgia Mountains at their most radiant.

Known to the Cherokee people as Enotah, the site’s current name comes from a misunderstanding of the Cherokee word “Itse’yĭ” (New Green Place), which settlers mistook for “Ûňtsaiyĭ” (Brass).

The “Bald” refers to the unparalleled, unobstructed 360-degree view visitors get from the top, where you can see four states (Georgia, North Carolina , South Carolina, and Tennessee) simply by turning your head.

As a result, the moderate hiking trail up to the Observation Tower can get a bit crowded during peak season, as can the shuttle that takes visitors most of the way to the top.

But with rocking chairs, a small picnic area, and remarkably scenic surroundings waiting at the summit, it’s a fantastic place to spend an autumn afternoon!

Christmas at Rock City Enchanted Garden of Lights in Lookout Mountain GA

20. See Rock City Gardens

Growing up in North Georgia in the 1970s, it was rare that we took a road trip without seeing one of the iconic “ See Rock City ” barns, over 900 of which were painted in 19 states between 1935 and 1969.

Located two hours north of Atlanta on the Tennessee border, Rock City Gardens & Fairyland Caverns is a world-renowned tourist attraction that draws thousands of visitors to Lookout Mountain GA each month.

The attraction dates back to the 1920s, when Garnet Carter and his wife developed Lookout Mountain as a residential neighborhood. They built Fairyland Caverns, which included a rock garden and America’s first mini-golf course.

Freida Carter planned many of the Lookout Mountain hiking trails, planting wildflowers and importing Bavarian gnomes for her unique garden .

Today, visitors can hike to Lover’s Leap, view 7 states from atop Lookout Mountain, and much more. And don’t miss Rock City’s Enchanted Garden of Lights , one of our favorite places to celebrate Christmas in Georgia!

21. Shoot the ‘Hooch on a SUP

Made famous by country singer Alan Jackson, the Chattahoochee River stretches from northeast Georgia down through metro Atlanta suburbs such as Roswell and Sandy Springs.

“Shooting the ‘hooch” on a raft, tube , canoe, or kayak has been a local tradition for decades.

In recent years, High Country Outfitters has been offering a new way to experience one of Atlanta’s favorite outdoor recreation pastimes, with 3- and 6-mile jaunts down the river’s in-town heart (from Powers Ferry Rd to Paces Mill Rd) via stand-up paddle board.

The company has several certified paddleboard instructors on staff, as well as equipment rentals for self-guided trips.

“We’ve all sat down in a kayak or canoe and floated down the river,” says veteran guide John Sloane, the son of the owners.

“But when you’re on a paddleboard, it’s like walking on water, and also a tremendous workout. It’s very easy to do, but it’s an amazing workout from your feet all the way up to your shoulders, and especially your core.”

22. Seeing Northwest Georgia Caves

TAG is the popular nickname for the beautiful area in the Cumberland Plateau where northwest Georgia meets Alabama and Tennessee .

Thanks in large part to the Southeastern Cave Conservancy , the area has lured cavers from all around the world eager to explore its labyrinthine underground passages. Pigeon Mountain is particularly popular, thanks to its vast network of limestone caves .

Pettyjohn’s Cave has six miles of previously mapped passageways that often attract a healthy weekend crowd. The 13 miles of Ellison’s Cave that have been explored include the 440-foot-deep Incredible Dome Pit and the 586-foot-deep Fantastic Pit.

Note that underground caves and caverns can be extremely dangerous for people without proper equipment or caving experience.

So please learn more about the sport before embarking on your first caving expedition, and we highly recommend hiring local guides if possible.

Old Fashioned Christmas in Downtown Dahlonega GA

23. Spend a Day in Dahlonega GA

Dahlonega GA has been one of my favorite North Georgia mountain towns for 30+ years now, and makes for a fantastic day trip from Atlanta.

Located just an hour north of Downtown Atlanta, Dahlonega is best known as the site of the first major gold rush in the US. The Dahlonega Gold Museum is a great place to learn about the state’s early gold mining history.

Historic Downtown Dahlonega features numerous 19th century buildings that are home to an array of charming local shops and great restaurants .

The town is known as one of the best places to celebrate Christmas in GA. Dahlonega’s Old Fashioned Christmas celebration is a personal favorite, including a parade, the Lighting of the Square, and free photos with Santa.

Dahlonega also hosts an array of fun annual festivals , including the Bear On The Square Mountain Festival (a celebration of Appalachian music and culture) in April and Gold Rush Days in October.

Lake Allatoona at Red Top Mountain State Park

24. Sunsets on Lake Allatoona

We’re biased towards 12,000-acre Lake Allatoona. It’s the closest of Georgia’s lakes to our house , we’ve kept our pontoon boat docked there for 13 years, and it’s our home away from home when we’re not traveling.

It’s also home to 1,562-acre Red Top Mountain State Park (named for the iron-rich soil’s deep red color). It’s 45 minutes from downtown Atlanta, making it one of the most popular Georgia day trips for nature lovers.

The lake attracts avid boaters and fishermen all year-round, and the park’s 15.5 miles of hiking trails provide frequent wildlife sightings, including herons, egrets, kingfishers, osprey, geese, and ducks.

Lake Allatoona is an incredible place for a picnic, swimming, kayaking , and standup paddle boarding, with numerous parks (including Dallas Landing Park and Cooper’s Furnace Day Use Area), campgrounds , and marinas along its shores.

It’s also a magical place to just sit back and watch the sunset over the water .

Tallulah Gorge State Park in Tallulah Falls, GA

25. Tallulah Gorge State Park

Georgia may not be able to match the Grand Canyon for sheer size and scope. But this 2,689-acre park is arguably among the most impressive canyons east of the Mississippi.

Considered one of Georgia’s “Seven Natural Wonders,” Tallulah Gorge is two miles long and nearly 1,000 feet deep, with over 20 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking. It’s also home to some of the most majestic waterfalls in North Georgia.

Permits for hiking in the gorge (which take you close to the waterfalls) are available at the park’s Interpretive Center. But note that spots tend to fill up quickly on the weekends , so it’s best to arrive early in the morning.

If you choose to tackle this unique trekking adventure, be sure to carry plenty of water, as the bottom of gorge can get extremely hot on sunny days.

Hikers can also follow rim trails to scenic overlooks and cross a suspension bridge that is 80 feet high, offering some of the best views in the park.

During specific times of the year, they open the Tallulah River dam to offer excellent white-water rafting and kayaking opportunities!

Montaluce Winery & Restaurant in Dahlonega GA

26. Wine Tastings at North Georgia Wineries

The unique climate and soil conditions of the North Georgia mountains make it the perfect place for growing grapes and producing wine.

Despite the fact that there have been vineyards in the state for centuries, Georgia wineries didn’t gain much attention until the 1990s. But in recent years they’ve garnered national notoriety for their award-winning wines.

There are now nearly 60 licensed wineries in Georgia, which is nearly double the number of a decade ago. Many of them offer wine tastings with breathtaking mountain views and southern hospitality.

The town of Dahlonega GA is home to many of the most popular North Georgia wineries , including the 57-acre Frogtown Cellars, the 184-acre Three Sisters Vineyards, and the award-winning Wolf Mountain Vineyards.

But our favorite is the Montaluce Winery, which is also home to one of Dahlonega’s best restaurants .

Other wonderful wineries in North Georgia include Bear Claw Vineyards in Blue Ridge, Habersham Winery in Helen, and the Fainting Goats Vineyard & Winery in Jasper.

Alpine-style buildings in Downtown Helen GA - places to visit near atlanta

27. Visit Alpine Helen

Helen GA is a unique mountain town that combines the Alpine beauty of Bavaria with the stunning landscapes and endless outdoor recreation opportunities of the Blue Ridge region.

The charming town boasts cobblestone walkways, German-inspired architecture, and lots of great German restaurants , where you can enjoy everything from schnitzel and wurst to massive steins of beer.

When you’re not exploring the tourist-oriented town, you can explore some of the myriad hiking trails, including Yonah Mountain and a diverse array of impressive waterfalls near Helen (such as Anna Ruby, Dukes Creek, Horse Trough, Raven Cliff, and Water’s Creek Falls).

Other popular things to do in Helen GA include tubing down the Chattahoochee River, panning for gold and gems in the Dukes Creek Mines, riding the Alpine Mountain Coaster, and visiting Unicoi State Park.

Perhaps the most famous attraction in Helen is their annual Oktoberfest festival in autumn, which is the largest in the world outside of Germany.

But we also love spending Christmas in Helen GA , which includes the lighting of the village, a Christmas parade, Christkindlmarkt, and more.

Beautiful scenery at Unicoi Lake-Smith Lake in Unicoi State Park, GA - things to do outside atlanta

28. Unicoi State Park

Though it’s located just a few miles from downtown Helen, Unicoi State Park & Lodge feels like a secluded haven for outdoor adventure lovers.

Popular Unicoi hiking trails include the Bottoms Loop Trail (which passes by an old homestead), the Lake Trail, and the Smith Creek Trail (which stretches from the campground to the Anna Ruby Falls Recreation Area).

Other fun activities in the park include archery, an air gun range, a GPS scavenger hunt, guided nature hikes, fly fishing classes, guided kayaking , and paddle boarding classes.

The park offers an array of overnight accommodation options. They’re best known for the retro-hip Unicoi State Park Barrel Cabins , but they have cabins along Smith Creek and Deluxe Cabins as well.

There are also plenty of campsites for RV and tent camping to choose from, each of which includes water, power, a fire ring, grill, sewer, and dump station nearby.

Lake Trahylta in Vogel State Park, North Georgia

29. Vogel State Park

Not far from popular Blairsville GA Restaurants , Vogel is one of the oldest North Georgia State Parks . It was established in 1931, with buildings constructed during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps .

With its dynamic landscapes and spectacular views of Blood Mountain, Vogel State Park remains one of the most visited parks in north Georgia, offering 17 miles of hiking trails .

The popular Trahlyta Lake Trail crosses an earthen dam created by the CCC in 1935, while the Bear Hair Gap Trail takes you past picturesque Trahlyta Falls and through the lower ridges of Blood Mountain.

Other fun activities in the state park include visiting the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum and renting kayaks, stand up paddle boards, pedal boats, and bikes.

If you want to make it an overnight or weekend visit, the park also offers 1- to 2-bedroom cabins , walk-in campsites, a 50-person pioneer campsite, and RV-accessible campsites.

Whitewater Rafting on the Chattooga River - best weekend trips from atlanta

30. Whitewater Rafting on the Chattooga River

The Chattooga River (whose headwaters begin in Cashiers NC ) is most famous as the place where much of the classic action flick Deliverance was filmed. Today it is an extremely popular place for whitewater rafting .

Designated by Congress as one of America’s “Wild and Scenic” rivers back in 1974, the Chattooga offers challenges for rafters of all skill levels in the picturesque setting of the Blue Ridge Mountains .

For more extreme adventure lovers, there’s Section IV, where Class IV and V rushing whitewater speeds you down the river at a breakneck pace, climaxing with an invigorating plunge down the legendary Five Falls and Soc-em-Dog.

For families seeking a kinder, gentler ride, there’s also Section III, a beginner-friendly float trip with a Class IV ending at Bull’s Sluice.

Mountain Treasures in Downtown Ellijay may look like your ordinary gift shop, but in the back they have a wine shop with free tastings! You can sample local wines, flavored moonshine, and wine slushies for free, no strings attached.

If you decide you like what you tried, you can buy a bottle or enjoy a wine slushy on the Boardwalk out back.

Dinner at The Shack of Ellijay

The Shack of Ellijay brings Asian fusion to the mountains. They offer poke bowls and noodle bowls made with the freshest of ingredients. They also have a variety of delicious bubble tea flavors.

Drinks at River Street Tavern

River Street Tavern is a bar and grill with live music and local beer. They feature some of the most popular wine and beer from local vineyards and breweries and even hard-to-get seasonal brews.

Every weekend, the bar hosts live music from local musicians and singers.

Live Music at La Catrina

La Catrina Tacos & Margaritas is a family-owned Mexican restaurant on main street.

You can catch live, local musicians at either location on the weekends.

Saturday: Winery Road Trip

On your second day in Ellijay, get out and explore the award-winning vineyards in the North Georgia mountains!

There are a lot of vineyards and wineries in the North Georgia Mountains just a short drive from Ellijay, so you have plenty of options to choose from for your winery road trip with the girls. I’m a sucker for anything bear-related, so of course I had to visit Bear Claw Vineyards .

Just 30 minutes away from Ellijay in the town of Blue Ridge, Georgia , Bear Claw Vineyards gives you a chance to relax in the serenity of their grape vines. They offer wine tastings, wine by the glass, or wine by the bottle.

You can enjoy live music on their covered patio, sit by the fire pit, picnic under the trees, and wander around the vineyard.

There is even the unique Blue Ridge TreeHouse vacation rental on the property built by The TreeHouse Guys. Imagine staying in a treehouse overlooking a vineyard!

You’ll definitely want to watch the sunset over the mountains at least one night during your trip! If you rented a cabin with a view , you can head back to watch the sunset and enjoy a relaxing night in and some girl time.

Sunday: Support Local Farms

On your final day in Ellijay, you should make a stop at any of the town’s famous apple orchards and support the local farmers. You’ll be able to get a unique souvenir before heading home!

Before heading home, make time to check out some of the apple orchards and local farms along Hwy 52. Ellijay is known as the Apple Capital of Georgia and is famous for apple picking in the late summer / early fall.

Even if you don’t have time to go apple picking yourself, you can still stop in to a few apple houses and pick up some delicious treats. I always go for a jug (or three) of apple cider.

Most orchards also sell apple fritters, apple pies, and other desserts. Then there are the jams, salsas, chips, and other snacks you never knew could be made with apples!

And of course, you can always buy a bushel or a peck of apples to take home with you.

Whether you live in Atlanta or are planning to visit, there are so many great options for day trips with kids and staycations for families. Bookmark this fun list for the next time you need a change of scenery for the day or weekend and hit the road for one of these 10 best road trips from Atlanta. 1. Alpine Helen

“It’s the charm of Bavaria in the Blue Ridge Mountains.” Alpine Helen is a little town, approximately 95 miles north of Atlanta. Spend the day exploring the great outdoors with numerous activities for all. Kayaking , hiking, exploring the corn maze, panning for gold and horseback riding are only a few of the multitude of activities available at Alpine Helen. Of course, the dining options vary as much as the activities – from formal to casual, with German offerings and kid friendly options as well.

2. Amicalola Falls State Park

If you’re looking to spend the day outdoors then consider Amicalola Falls State Park, an 829-acre park located approximately 75 miles north of Atlanta, between Ellijay and Dahlonega in Dawsonville, Ga. Amicalola Park is home to the Amicalola Falls, one of the highest cascading falls east of the Mississippi, making it a gorgeous place to hike and picnic. There are a variety of trails of varying difficulty. Of note is a five-mile hike leading to the Len Foote Hike Inn, Georgia’s only backcountry lodge. The park is also home to Springer Mountain Summit, the southernmost start to the Appalachian Trail which begins its 2,000+ mile, epic journey northbound for Maine. Be sure to stop by the visitors center to learn about the area, pick up a map, grab a bite at the Mountain View Restaurant and let kids play at the playground.

3. Barnsley Resort and Spa

Barnsley Resort is located just an hour north of Atlanta and definitely is a destination to choose if you want to splurge on class and style. This gorgeous “Grand Southern Estate” can keep you busy – or not. Choose a brisk bicycle ride by the lake, a horseback adventure, disc golf, canoeing or an afternoon shooting at the sporting club. Take your kids to the barnyard, kick back and relax by the pool or get pampered in the spa. 4. Blue Ridge, Georgia

Just short of two hours from Atlanta proper is Blue Ridge, one of Georgia’s favorite mountain towns. Nestled amid unspoiled beauty, find a variety of activities for the whole family. From horseback riding to hiking and zip lining to the must-not-miss Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, this little town is bursting with beauty as far as the eye can see. Be sure to stop by Mercier Orchards for apple picking and a luscious fruit stand. You can also try the local wines in the tasting room and grab a bite in the deli.

6. Downtown Atlanta

Atlanta is a metropolitan city and comes with all the trappings of such. From museums to theater, great parks, fabulous shopping and more, it will take more than just one day to experience all Atlanta has to offer. Visiting with the family? Head to Centennial Olympic Park with its iconic Fountain of Rings (you can play in it) and light show set to music. Across the street from the park, be sure to take the kids to the Children’s Museum of Atlanta to explore all things art, science, technology and more.

Art enthusiasts will not want to miss the High Museum of Art , a world-class museum that caters to even the smallest family members with special programs and exhibits. You’ll also want to check out the Center for Puppetry Arts, which presents entertaining puppet theater for young and old.
