The Cullinan Diamond as found, broken down and cut as crown jewels.

diamond travel sa

The Cullinan kimberlite pipe was discovered in 1902 and open pit mining commenced at the ‘Premier’ mine   (as it was then known) in 1903. Ore extraction has been by underground mining methods since 1946. Ore extraction has varied between 2 and 5 Mt per annum and ore treatment between 2 and 7 Mt per annum.

The mine was renamed Cullinan as part of its centenary celebrations and to link the mine to the illustrious heritage of the Cullinan diamond, which provided the two main polished diamonds within the British Crown Jewels (the 530 carat Great Star of Africa and the 317 carat Lesser Star of Africa)

Petra Diamonds initially acquired a 37% interest in the Cullinan mine from De Beers in 2008, but increased its direct interest in the mine to 74% in late 2009 when it acquired Al Rajhi 's holding in the mine. Petra Diamonds continues to mine the underground resource using block cave mining methods.

Cullinan is renowned as a source of large diamonds and freq uently yields diamonds larger than 10 carats. Furthermore, it has produced over 750 stones weighing more than 100 carats, 130 stones weighing more than 200 carats, and around a quarter of all diamonds weighing more than 400 carats.

Other notable diamonds historically produced from Cullinan include the "Premier Rose" (353 carats rough), the "Niarchos" (426 carats rough), the "De Beers Centenary" (599 carats rough), the "Golden Jubilee" (755 carats rough) and the famous "Taylor-Burton" diamond (69 carats polished).

Cullinan is also renowned as the world' s most important source of blue diamonds, providing the collection of 11 rare blues displayed in 2000 at London's Millennium Dome alongside the Millennium Star and which included the fancy vivid b lue " Heart of Eternity" (27 carats polished).

Since Petra Diamonds took operations over in 2008, Cullinan has produced the following important diamonds:

  • A 39.9 carat diam ond which sold for US$8.8 million in 2008.
  • A 26.6 carat diamond which yielded a fancy vivid blue and internally flawless 7.0 carat polished stone known as the "Star of Josephine" and sold for US$9.49 million at a Sotheby's auction in 2009.
  • A 507.5 carat white diamond known as the "Cullinan Heritage" which was sold in 2010 for US$35.3 million.
  • A 25.5 carat blue diamond which sold for US$16.9 million in 2013.
  • A 29.6 carat blue diamond which sold for US$25.6 million in February 20 14 and was then cut and polished into the perfect 12 carat  "Blue Moon".
  • A 122.52 carat blue diamond which achieved a value of US$27.6 million in 2014.
  • A 232 carat white diamond which was sold for US$15.2 million in September 2014.

Tswalu, South Africa: the ultimate destination for a luxury safari

Motse accommodation at Tswalu private reserve in South Africa. Photo / Supplied

At Tswalu in South Africa , diamond tycoon Jonathan Oppenheimer has created the kind of luxury safari that most of us can only dream about, writes Catherine McGregor

It was when the mountains caught fire that we started to worry. A summer storm had rolled in over the Korannaberg ranges and lightning was slashing through the vast desert skies, setting the hillside alight before quickly being extinguished by the torrential rain. On the verandah, the clink of ice in our pre-dinner cocktails was being drowned out by the roar of thunder. It was time to go inside.

The summer rains bring life to the Kalahari Desert, the arid sandy savanna that straddles the border of Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. At Tswalu Kalahari reserve in South Africa the rain can transform the parched land literally overnight. The landscape, once barren, is suddenly carpeted by thick tufted grass, spiky gemsbok cucumbers and tiny yellow dubbeltjie (little devil) flowers. For visitors, the odd lightning strike is a small price to pay for such abundance.

Located on the southern edge of the Kalahari, not far from the Botswana border, Tswalu is a truly unique safari experience. The property has been owned since 1999 by the billionaire Oppenheimer family, who once controlled the majority of South Africa’s diamond industry through their controlling stake in De Beers and now use their immense wealth to support their conservation and philanthropic efforts. Tswalu is not only South Africa’s largest private wildlife reserve, but arguably its most remote, at around 10 hours’ drive from either Cape Town or Johannesburg. Isolated and ultra exclusive, Tswalu just might be the ultimate destination safari.

Tswalu Kalahari is South Africa's largest private wildlife reserve, offering an expansive sanctuary nearly twice the size of urban Auckland. Photo / Loapi Images

The distance by road doesn’t bother most guests, since hardly any of them drive. Tswalu has its own private airport and offers a direct charter air service from both Johannesburg or Cape Town. For Tswalu’s mega wealthy clientele, flying in is a no-brainer. That airstrip is a game-changer, says Nigel Pace, Tswalu’s head of hospitality. “Yes, we’re really remote – but in terms of access, we’re actually easier to get to than places like Kruger or Sabi Sands.”

After touchdown, guests are collected by their drivers and depart for one of three luxury camps dotted across the vast reserve. Motse, Tswalu’s original camp, features nine guest suites, or legae (“home” in the local Setswana language) and has the feel of a relaxed-chic boutique hotel. The recently opened Loapi is a collection of six extraordinarily beautiful tented camps , each with a dedicated homathi (house manager) and chef. All six Loapi residences are located at least 100m from each other, with no communal or shared guest areas or services, allowing for an incredibly private stay.

My stay was at Tarkuni, an exclusive-use homestead designed for multi-generational families or parties of friends. Tarkuni accommodates up to 10 guests in five suites, each with their own private verandah, arranged around a living area featuring a spectacular double-height fireplace. Upstairs is a spa treatment suite and games room; out the front is a swimming pool and waterhole where baboons and antelope regularly come to drink.

A Tarkuni suite at Tswalu, where writer Catherine McGregor stayed. Photo / Supplied

With a total maximum of 40 guests in an area almost twice the size of urban Auckland , it’s hardly surprising that the word “private” comes up so much at Tswalu. If you’re staying at Loapi and Tarkuni, you can quite easily avoid ever seeing another soul, save for your own small team of staff. On top of that, every booking guarantees you a private 4×4 safari vehicle, including a dedicated guide and tracker, for the duration of your stay. More than anything, it’s this that puts Tswalu a cut above most other luxury safari experiences.

The word “private” comes up so much at Tswalu. Photo / Dook

Having your own vehicle doesn’t only give you privacy – it makes each game drive a totally personalised experience. Want to focus on tracking lesser-known sub-species like the desert black rhino? No problem. Want to stay out all day? Can do. Tswalu’s guides and trackers know the reserve like the back of their hands, and are trained to create for you the most memorable safari experience possible. As your stay continues, your priorities can change, and the value of a private vehicle only increases. With your own vehicle, you’ll never find yourself stuck with day-one newbies who need the safari basics explained or want to stop to photograph every passing kudu – although if that’s something you still want to do, that’s absolutely okay too.

Tswalu's location in the Kalahari Desert means it’s home to rare species such as the desert black rhino and the Kalahari black-maned lion. Photo / Marcus Westberg

A Tswalu safari is as unique as the land itself. The aridity of the Kalahari means you won’t see any elephants or hippos here, and the sheer size of the reserve can sometimes make spotting animals a challenge. Don’t arrive expecting a Kruger-style wildlife buffet, but that doesn’t mean you won’t see plenty of amazing sights, like a lioness and her cubs contentedly chowing down on a zebra carcass at the edge of a water hole. For 10 minutes we sat quietly in our vehicle, snapping photos from just a few metres away, as the desert sun slowly set behind the horizon.

While it isn’t the place to spot the Big 5 around every corner, Tswalu boasts a remarkable number of species that are rarely seen elsewhere. Along with more common species like oryx, wildebeest, cheetah, buffalo, zebra and giraffe, the reserve is a wonderful place to see rare and endangered species including the Kalahari black-maned lion, desert black rhino and African wild dog. Tswalu offers a lucky few the chance to see the Temmick’s pangolin, one of the world’s most elusive mammals; if you get the chance to accompany the resident pangolin scientists on a nocturnal research outing, grab it.

Tswalu is also home to multiple colonies of meerkats, who have become used to human visitors through a painstaking habituating process. These charmingly gregarious creatures are best spotted in the early morning as they leave their burrows for the day, or at dusk, when they return. Like all wild creatures, however, no viewing is ever guaranteed. Despite the best efforts of Tswalu’s tracking team, we sadly didn’t see any meerkats on our visit. It’s a tribute to the power of the Kalahari landscape that our sunrise walk to the burrows, and the Jeep-side breakfast afterwards – magicked seemingly out of thin air by our guide – remains one of my favourite memories of our stay.

Along with preserving wildlife, making memories is what Tswalu is all about. On our drive back to the homestead, our guide told us that bush dining is one of the experiences guests request most often – whether that means a fully hosted braai with butler service and a mobile kitchen for a group, or a secluded gourmet picnic for two (with a staff vehicle positioned nearby, just in case). Other once-in-a-lifetime experiences include a night under the stars in one of Tswalu’s “star beds”, private camps whose level of luxury puts most other glamp-outs to shame.

There’s one special Tswalu experience that towers above all others, and that’s dinner at Klein Jan, the incredible on-site restaurant founded by Michelin-starred South African chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen. It’s the sort of dining experience that relies in part on the element of surprise – so if eating here is on your bucket list, look away now. The magic begins when you pull up outside what appeared to be a ramshackle farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. This is actually the Klein Jan entrance building, where we sat on the stoep, or verandah, and drank cocktails as the thunderstorm rolled in.

Klein Jan, a restaurant founded by Michelin-starred chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, offers a culinary journey through South African history using local ingredients. Photo / Dook

We were guided through the farmhouse and into a door on the side of what looked like a disused water tank. Suddenly we were descending a staircase wrapped around a waterfall, then led through more jewel-box spaces and into a spectacular glass-walled dining room. While Klein Jan is open to non-guests for lunch – people fly in and out just to spend a few hours eating here – dinner is for Tswalu guests only, and is included with every two-night stay. The tasting menu at Klein Jan is a journey through both South African culinary history and the natural world of the Kalahari, utilising such unfamiliar ingredients (at least to me) as fever berry, xigugu (a traditional corn and peanut paste), kaiings (crackling) and boerbok (South African goat). As we ate, lightning carved through the sky, the landscape fleetingly illuminated before being plunged back into the inky black darkness of a desert night.

Accommodation and pool at Motse, one of three luxury camps dotted across the vast reserve. Photo / Supplied

The next morning dawned clear and bright, the previous evening’s torrential rain already absorbed by the thirsty red sand. For our last experience, we were going horse riding – a prospect that initially had me slightly anxious, but which, I was assured, was perfectly safe in this part of the reserve. After the exhilaration of the previous few days, a quiet hour on horseback was the ideal end to our stay. With no engine noise or whirr of camera shutters, we could hear the Kalahari’s birds bursting into song in celebration of the rain. Above, the desert sky was enormous and blue; around us, the ochre sand was stippled with summer green. At our dismounting site, the riding guides removed our horses’ saddles and bridles. As we climbed into our Jeep for the last time, the horses set off at a gallop, back across the savannah and towards home.

SUZHOU, China (AP) — Akani Simbine surged late to win the 100 meters in 10.01 seconds at the Diamond League meet in China on Saturday, upstaging American former world champions Christian Coleman and Fred Kerley.

Coleman was fastest out of the blocks — he’s the world record holder in the 60 meters — and was leading most of the way but had to settle for second place in his season-best 10.04, holding off Kerley who was third in 10.11.

The race had been billed as a showdown between the two Americans going head-to-head on back-to-back weekends in China — Coleman got the better of Kerley in the series-opener last week in Xiamen.

But South Africa’s Simbine overhauled them over the last 20 meters of the race.

“This has built a lot of confidence leading into the Olympic year,” the two-time Olympic finalist said. “This helps build momentum, which I hope to build on further as the season progresses.”

Coleman said he expected a better performance “but I am fine with today’s result” as part of his preparation for the Paris Olympics which start in late July in Paris.

Armand Duplantis had a bid at pole vault world records in back-to-back meets but missed all three attempts at 6.25 meters as he won the title in Suzhou, near Shanghai.

More than 340 years after the royal stables were built under the reign of France's Sun King, riders and horses continue to train and perform in front of the Versailles Palace. The site will soon keep on with the tradition by hosting the equestrian sports during the Paris Olympics. Last weekend in Xiamen, Duplantis, the two-time world champion known as Mondo, improved his world record by one centimeter with a winning mark of 6.24 meters.

On Saturday, the Swede was the only competitor to clear 5.92 meters, then he cleared 6 meters at his first attempt before raising the bar to 6.25 for three shots at the record.

“To jump six meters today and complete a very successful tour, I have a lot of good takeaways,” Duplantis said. “I just feel that conditions have to be perfect for me to jump a world record and I wasn’t quite feeling it off the runway tonight.”

Women’s 100-meter world champion Sha’Carri Richardson faded toward the end of a 200 for the second time in her two-week trip to China.

After finishing second to Australian teenager Torrie Lewis last week, Richardson placed third on Saturday in 23.11 seconds — behind Daryll Neita, who won in 22.62 seconds, and Anavia Battle, who took second in 22.99.

“I feel amazing. It was such a strong field and to run that time at this stage of the season is amazing,” Neita said. “My main focus for the rest of the season is to stay healthy and in one piece. I hope to really win a medal at the Olympics.”

In a contentious women’s 100-meter hurdles, Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn won in a photo finish with world record-holder Tobi Amusan, who was allowed to run under protest but was disqualified for a false start.

Camacho-Quinn took first place in 12.63 seconds, narrowly ahead of Devynne Charlton, the 60-meter hurdles world record-holder, in 12.64.

“There was three of us in a line, so I didn’t know who had won,” Camacho-Quinn said, immediately looking ahead to the Olympics. “I know what I need to work on.”

Beatrice Chepkoech of Kenya won her second straight 3,000-meter steeplechase of the series in 9 minutes, 7.36 seconds, more than 10 seconds slower than the world-leading 8:55.40 she clocked last weekend.

Shanghai/Suzhou Diamond League 2024: South Africa's Akani Simbine sprints to men's 100m victory

Akani Simbine won the men's 100m in Suzhou

South Africa’s Akani Simbine upset former world champions Fred Kerley and Christian Coleman to win the men’s 100m at the Shanghai/Suzhou Diamond League track and field athletics meet on Saturday (27 April).

The former African record holder showed superior top-end speed to pull away from the two men on his inside dipping in a winning time of 10.01 seconds.

Coleman’s characteristic blistering start was not enough to give him back-to-back victories and had to be content with second place with a season's best 10.04s. Kerley, who finished second behind Coleman in Xiamen a week ago, settled for third in 10.11s.

Simbine had some work to do running shoulder-to-shoulder with Kerley and trailing a flying Coleman. The Olympic finalist found the next gear chasing Coleman down to take the victory to match his season’s best from the South African national championships.

“I knew the field here would be strong but I just had to replicate what I did last week at the South African Championships,” Simbine said after the race.

“This has built a lot of confidence leading into the Olympic year. This helps build momentum, which I hope to build on further as the season progresses."

Delays in renewing work permits causing problems in Cork, say Indian nurses

Immigration specialist warns ending of visa-free travel for skilled workers from south africa will impact on irish companies.

Growing delays to the renewals of residence permits required by those who come here to live from outside the European Union (EU) are causing considerable problems for thousands of workers and their families in Cork City, according to a group representing Indian nurses in the region.

The group says about 9,000 non-EU citizens are working in the area but delays of between four to six months for the appointments required for renewals are preventing people taking up or changing jobs and hampering family reunification efforts and citizenship applications as well as hindering those who want to travel, sometimes for family emergencies.

They want to see the online renewals system they say has been successfully rolled out in the Dublin region extended to Cork City, or greater flexibility shown with regard to the centres where appointments are scheduled as much of the wider region is unaffected by the delays.

“The problem is that there is only one centre in Cork City and so there the backlog is massive,” said Janet Baby Joseph, president of the Cork Indian Nurses association.

No shame in losing to Limerick but Sunday could not have gone worse for Tipperary

“We have approached local TDs who have said they will raise the issue in the Dáil but extending the online system used in Dublin and allowing people to have their appointments outside of the city could help start to address the situation very quickly,” she says.

Renewals in the Dublin area are handled by the Immigration Service while those in the rest of the country are overseen by An Garda Síochána, who were approached for comment.

Separately, an immigration specialist at Dublin-based law firm Lewis Silkin says any move to introduce visa requirements for those travelling from South Africa to work in Ireland will have a significant impact on companies who have ramped up recruitment there in recent years.

Just 3 per cent of work permits granted to people coming from outside the EU in the opening months of this year, 326 out of 9,832, went to South Africans but the country has become a source of particular skills that are in short supply in the Irish construction and infrastructure sectors.

[  Visa-free travel from South Africa may end under immigration plan  ]

The Cabinet, however, is to discuss ending visa-free travel from South Africa three years after it was reintroduced as it is believed people from other countries, including Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo, have been using South African passports to sidestep immigration requirements.

“The process at the moment of obtaining the permits required for South Africans to come and work here takes about 10 weeks on average but if you add visa requirements to that it could take an additional eight weeks. There might be additional support required and so it all becomes a more onerous task and a less attractive one for companies who need these skills and have invested in their efforts to hire South African nationals,” says Declan Groarke, senior associate at Lewis Silkin.

“These are skilled people like engineers and electrical engineers and there is a traditional labour market shortage that needs to be filled. The Department of Enterprise is working to try to address that market shortage but this could actually work against us in many ways,” he says.
