Newman Entertainment Presents

Australia’s iconic vaudevillian variety show, Dracula’s, will tour Aotearoa for the first time ever this October and November.

Following a sold-out season in Australia, the New Zealand tour will combine years of perfected performances into one blockbuster show, set to dazzle and delight in a way only Dracula’s can.

Born in a Melbourne laneway in 1980, Dracula’s has become a Melbourne and Gold Coast icon. The sexy burlesque comedy show, brought to our shores by Newman Entertainment, has kept more than five million attendees in suspense, surprise and in stitches over the 43 years it has been running in Australia, including many visiting Kiwis.

Dracula’s will unleash fan favourites on New Zealand audiences, including their most requested acts, live rock music, sultry burlesque, aerial acrobatics, jaw-to-the-floor costumes and razor-sharp comedy in two 40 minute acts with one intermission.

“By the time the show reached its dazzling finale which again featured the entire cast and some impressive pyrotechnics, one final surprise was the realisation that the success of Dracula’s is not only its clever Transylvanian theme, but also its clever mix of variety, revue, burlesque and circus, and the sustained excellence of its performers and performances, which has been its golden ticket which has kept audiences coming back again and again.”

A vampire’s nightmare come true by Madelaine Empson

Australia’s iconic vaudevillian variety show Dracula’s is in the midst and mists of its first-ever New Zealand tour. Swooping into Wellington’s St James Theatre from the 2 nd to the 4 th of November, Dracula’s: The Resurrection Tour will combine years of perfected performances into one dazzling, delightful, demonic show filled to the coffin’s brim with rock music, sultry burlesque, aerial acrobatics, jaw-dropping costumes, and razor-sharp comedy fangs bound to draw blood.

The brainchild of Newman Entertainment, the masterminds of comedy cabaret restaurants in Australia, Dracula’s was born in a Melbourne laneway in 1980. More specifically, an old warehouse on Drewery Lane. Based on the wildly successful The Rocky Horror Show , zany characters and a haunted-castle interior thrilled crowds until Dracula’s outgrew its original venue, moving to its legendary Victoria Street location 10 years later in 1990. It remained there until 2017 after an unprecedented 37 years of epic entertainment in Melbourne.

In 1985, Dracula’s creaked open its doors in a second location – this time on the Gold Coast, off the main drag in a converted shopping centre with all odds stacked against it. Of course, the locals fell in love with the eccentric comedy and intimate atmosphere, and in no time, the venue became known for the long queue that would stretch around the block. The electrifying, horror-fying cabaret is still there to this very day.

In 2021, Dracula’s: The Resurrection Tour returned to the city where it all began, smashing years of punchy variety into one bloodbuster show. Now, finally, it’s New Zealand’s turn.

“We’ve had so many Kiwis come see Dracula’s ”, Newman Entertainment CEO Luke Newman says. “We can’t wait to thrill and entertain New Zealanders in their own hometowns.”

Lead female vocalist Clara Fable [pictured], who’ll grace our shores this October and November, has had a long love affair with Dracula’s.

“I grew up in Brisbane, with the Gold Coast being a very popular holiday spot during my younger years”, Fable says. “I remember the first time I ever set foot in the illustrious castle itself, I turned to my dad and said, ‘I’m gonna perform here one day!’ Hilarious that my poor dad had absolutely no idea what he was getting us all into by booking us a table that night!”

In 2019, Fable auditioned for a role in Dracula’s on the Gold Coast and ended up becoming the new face of all their marketing.

“Later that year I received the call I’d always dreamed of – I was offered a role in the first ever Dracula’s touring production. Since then, I’ve toured with the incredible team many times, a true vampire’s nightmare come true.”

Fable plays Vyper in Dracula’s: The Resurrection Tour, giving me a sneak peek into the sheer spectacle of the show by telling me she has not one, not two, but eight costume changes!

“It’s an all-singing, all-dancing, all-ridiculous show that’s full of nonstop chaos, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Newman says Dracula’s: The Resurrection Tour goes beyond classic entertainment.

“It’s almost impossible to sum up this show in a sentence. It has it all. It’s a live spectacle of sexy seduction, silliness, and bodily skill, with feathers, flirting, dancing, singing, and humour. It’s naughty, it’s fun, and it’s on the nose, while still being light-hearted and uplifting. Just what the world needs right now.”

Five things to know: Ryan Fox

Need to Know

Change Text Size

New Zealand’s Ryan Fox is highly regarded across the world of professional golf.

This week, the greater world might get to know him, too.

Fox stormed into the early Masters lead with an opening nine of 5-under 31 at Augusta National Golf Club, in his second Masters start after finishing T26 a year ago. Fox qualified for this year’s Masters via the top 50 on the 2023 year-end Official World Golf Ranking.

Fox, 37, began the week with just three made cuts in eight TOUR starts this season, no finish better than T35, but he’s having little trouble so far at Augusta National.

Here are five things to know about Fox.

1. His dad is a rugby legend.

Fox is the son of Grant Fox, a member of the famed All Blacks team that won the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987. That year, Grant Fox set the world record for most points scored in a Rugby World Cup tournament. It doesn’t stop there, as Fox’s grandpa Merv Wallace (his mom’s dad) was a renowned cricketer on the New Zealand national team, described by one obituary as “one of the best batsmen New Zealand has ever produced,” per CNN.

2. Golf wasn’t his first love.

As per family heritage, cricket and rugby were Fox’s first sports as a young New Zealander, although he enjoyed hitting golf balls around the backyard as an elementary schooler. His grandpa Merv Wallace crafted his first set of clubs from wood, and he steadily fell in love with the sport through his teenage years. “I’d always wanted to be a professional sportsman,” Fox told CNN. “It just took a fair while to figure out what sport it was going to be.”

3. He’s a two-time Olympian.

Fox represented New Zealand in the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Men’s Golf Competition, joining his dad and grandpa in representing their home country in international sporting competition. “It was a pretty cool achievement … I think Dad was pretty chuffed when he could say that,” Fox told PGATOUR.COM. He hopes to make it a third straight Olympics, with this year’s golf competition to be played at Le Golf National, a regular French Open venue where he has competed several times.

4. He earned dual PGA TOUR membership via the DP World Tour

Fox has achieved great success across the globe, including four DP World Tour titles and three on the PGA Tour of Australasia, but this is his first season as a PGA TOUR member. He earned his card via the 2023 DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai, as No. 2 on the season-long standings (not otherwise exempt on TOUR).

5. He’s a family man.

Fox and wife Anneke have two daughters, Isobel and Margot, and the Foxes enjoyed family time at Wednesday’s Masters Par 3 Contest. They weren’t on hand for his Masters debut last year (when Fox’s dad caddied in the Par 3 Contest), making this year even more special.

Air New Zealand signs nine million litre sustainable aviation fuel deal with Neste

Watch Kiri Hannifin discuss the deal on AM. Credits: Neste / Newshub.

Air New Zealand has signed a deal to buy nine million litres of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Finnish company Neste in the airline's biggest deal yet for the green fuel.

The SAF is being produced at Neste's Singapore refinery and blended with conventional jet fuel before being supplied to Los Angeles International Airport between April 1 and November 30, the two companies announced.

Air NZ said the SAF would reduce carbon emissions by up to 80 percent over the life cycle of the fuel compared to using fossil jet fuel, including its production and transport emissions.

More from Newshub

Kiri Hannifin, Air NZ's chief sustainability officer, said the airline has worked very hard and "punched above its weight" as a relatively small international player to secure the highly sought-after and costly SAF.

"It is very, very hard to source. It's still a very new industry and there's very few people making it," Hannifin told AM.

"It's about 1 percent of the total global aviation fuel. So it is hard to source and it's also incredibly expensive - anywhere between three and five times the price of normal jet fuel. So we're very pleased to have got it, but we've got to find a lot more of it as we work incredibly hard to decarbonise."

Asked if the higher costs of SAF would mean higher costs for airfares, Hannifin said "not yet".

"Currently we are absorbing the cost ourselves, but at some point in the future, as we need to take all of our current fossil fuel and make it into renewable fuels, that cost will become more obvious and more evident. But at the moment, because we're just buying tiny bits, we're taking on the costs ourselves."

Hannifin said the nine million litres of Neste's SAF would be blended with conventional jet fuel at a maximum of 50/50 as that was the limit imposed on airlines, although test flights without passengers have been successful using 100 percent SAF.

"If we could fly at 100 percent sustainable aviation fuel - which we can't - but if we could, [nine million litres] would be around 120 flights from LA to Auckland," she said.

Fjords, Pharaohs or Koalas? Time to Plan for Your Next Eclipse.

If you can’t get enough of totality, or missed out this time, you’ll have three more chances in the next four years in destinations like Iceland, Spain, Egypt and Australia.

A small, black disk surrounded by a bright, white halo suspended in a mostly dark sky over the still waters of a lake in which dim, golden light from the horizon is reflecting. There are dark hills and mountains beyond the lake.

By Danielle Dowling

Are you still a little giddy from the magical moments of totality during Monday’s solar eclipse? Or did clouds swoop in to block your view? Maybe you just couldn’t make it to the path of totality this time. No matter what, the question now is “ Where and when will it happen again?”

“People who have never seen it before, the first words out of their mouth after the totality ends is ‘I’ve got to see another one, this is incredible, this is unbelievable.’ That is when you become addicted to these things and end up traveling no matter where the next one is,” said Joseph Rao, an eclipse chaser and guest lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium.

So, if like Mr. Rao, you’ve developed a raging case of umbraphilia — the love of eclipses — you’ll have three chances over the next four years to see the moon blot out the sun. The first, on Aug. 12, 2026, will start above Greenland, then strafe the west coast of Iceland and move along the Atlantic Ocean and over Spain. Almost a year later, on Aug. 2, 2027, another will skirt the Mediterranean coast of North Africa then cross Egypt and part of the Arabian Peninsula. The third, on July 22, 2028, will cut across Australia and the southern tip of New Zealand.

Future Eclipses

Eclipse chasers will have several more chances this decade to view a total solar eclipse .

Last week, as Victoria Sahami , the owner of Sirius Travel , was preparing to guide a group of tourists in Mazatlán, Mexico, for Monday’s big event, she was also planning for these other upcoming eclipses. Ms. Sahami joined the ranks of the eclipse-obsessed when she witnessed one in Venezuela in the 1990s. “Like many people, I was hooked. There was no going back,” she said.

Total solar eclipses happen fairly regularly — about every one to two years — in locations scattered around the world. “That’s the great thing about them: You wind up in places that you don’t normally go,” Ms. Sahami said.

A major spoiler is weather, which will be a big variable in the 2026 eclipse — one Greenland, Iceland and Spain will see.

“Iceland normally has a lot of cloud during that time of year,” said Paul Maley , who runs Ring of Fire Expeditions . “The data shows Spain to have the higher good-weather prospects of all three. However, the sun is low in the sky and the eclipse ends as the sun hits the horizon at sunset.”

Because of Iceland’s mercurial meteorology, Ring of Fire Expeditions is going all in on Spain, with a 10-day excursion on the mainland. Sirius Travel is offering not only a five-day trip to Majorca but also an eight-day tour around Iceland. It will be based in Reykjavik, and the itinerary will remain flexible on the day of the eclipse so the tour can easily pivot toward the location with the least cloud cover. Ms. Sahami recommends the trip for those who already have a few eclipses under their belt and would be happy just to take in the sights of Iceland if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The 2027 eclipse, on the other hand, promises to be truly stellar: Luxor, Egypt — the site of numerous ancient temples as well as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens — sits right in the middle of the path of totality and will be bathed in darkness for a full 6 minutes 23 seconds. Weather-wise, it is what Ms. Sahami called “a slam dunk.” “You know you’re going to see it. You know that you’re not going to get any clouds,” she said.

But for all its potential, those considering Egypt should be aware that the State Department has a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” warning for the country because of the risk of terrorism.

The 2028 eclipse will darken the skies over Sydney, Australia, for 3 minutes 49 seconds. It will be the first time the city has experienced a total solar eclipse since 1857. Ms. Sahami has her eyes on a trip based out of there, while Mr. Maley has chartered a cruise ship off the northwest coast of Australia. It will be winter there, he said, but that isn’t likely to mean bad eclipse-viewing weather.

If you want to see any (or all) of these eclipses, you should get started on planning and booking now, particularly if you want to sign up for a trip organized by a tour company. One of Sirius Travel’s excursions to Luxor is already full.

Scrutinize refund policies and look into insuring your trip. Several companies will fully refund your deposit if you cancel a year in advance. A lot can happen, Ms. Sahami said, “but if you think you’re going to go, why not?”

All Blacks center Jordie Barrett joining Leinster in December

  • Copy Link copied

New Zealand center Jordie Barrett will join Irish club Leinster on a short-term contract after the All Blacks’ tour to Britain in December.

Barrett has re-signed with New Zealand Rugby through 2028. But a clause in his new contract allows him a sabbatical which will see him miss the 2025 Super Rugby season.

Barrett said Ireland was “a special place for the Barrett family.” They relocated to Ireland and Barrett’s father Kevin coached Athlone in 2000 while managing a farm in County Meath.

“We’ve got so many great family connections in Oldcastle, in County Meath and throughout Dublin,” Barrett said. “To have an opportunity to go back and meet some family and friends and connections that were made 20 years ago is pretty cool.”

Barrett has played 57 tests for the All Blacks, many in company with his brothers Beauden and Scott.
