Glenfiddich Distillery

Delivery by whisky bio fuel.

Glenfiddich biogas lorries

Pronunciation : Glen-FID-dich

Meaning : Valley of the Deer

Interesting fact : On Christmas Day 1887 William Grant, the founder of Glenfiddich, realised his lifelong ambition to create the best dram in the valley when the first drops of whisky flowed from stills in the distillery which he and his family had toiled for a year to build.

Eco and sustainability  :

In a world first, Glenfiddich has begun operating its fleet with self-produced biogas.   The biogas is extracted from the residues of whisky production using a technology developed in-house by the family run company Willian Grants. This low-carbon gas produces only minor emissions.

Over the course of the last decade Glenfiddich has become the first distillery to process 100 per cent of its waste residues on its own site and now is the first to process those residues into biogas fuel to power its fleet of lorries. The strapline on the side of the vehicles celebrates the achievement; “Fuelled by Glenfiddich – turning whisky waste into ultra low carbon fuel”.   Special petrol stations have been set up on the grounds of the Glenfiddich distillery.  Lorries fill up with both whisky and whisky produced fuel making the journey to the filling and packaging site climate neutral.

Compared to fossil fuels, each truck saves up to 250 tons of CO2 annually, which corresponds to a similar benefit for the environment as planting around 4,000 trees a year.

Glenfiddich Distillery

Explore the delights of whisky country with one of our Speyside whisky tours, taking in the picturesque Glenfiddich Distillery and includes one evening at the Dowans House set high above the Spey Valley

The Explorers Tour is one of our open afternoon tours, allowing you to choose from several options after lunch. In the morning, you will visit will begin with a short film recounting the history of five generations of family ownership. It’ll then be followed by an on-foot tour of the distillery with the chance to see how Glenfiddich whiskies are created by craftsmen with generations of understanding. The tour includes a visit to the still house where you can see how the stillmen capture the sweetest part of the distillate from unusually sized copper stills.

As well as touring the distillery, you’ll visit the original warehouse where you will explore the generations of gently maturing casks. You’ll also learn how Glenfiddich achieve depth and consistency of flavour throughout their range of exceptional whiskies. The special conclusion to this visit is a tutored nosing and tasting of three world-renowned single malts.

After lunch the choice is yours! We can either arrange another visit to one of the distilleries close which include Strathisla, Cardhu, Macallan, Balvenie or Glenallachie or a visit to the Speyside Cooperage. For the collectors, we can also arrange a visit and tour of the Whisky Hammer, known online for the monthly whisky auctions they hold.

Situated in the whisky town of Dufftown, the Glenfiddich Distillery is home to the world’s most-awarded single malt. The distillery was founded in 1886 by William Grant and is currently run by the fifth generation of his family. Together with his 9 children and a single stonemason, Grant began building his distillery by hand. After a year of work, the distillery stills began production on Christmas day 1887. Grant named his new distillery ‘Glenfiddich’, which is Scots Gaelic for Valley of the Deer. Retaining its historic character and charm visitors to Glenfiddich Distillery will discover tall copper tuns, great wooden washbacks and stone-walled warehouses filled with earthy, aged aromas.

The Dowans Hotel of Speyside was built over 100 years ago and offers the chance for a relaxing break.
