Latest > Asian Tour makes history with first-ever Scottish event
Apr 12th, 2023, asian tour makes history with first-ever scottish event, fairmont st andrews added to international series summer swing.
“We’re absolutely delighted to be staging another world class event at Fairmont St Andrews, and to be making history as the first Scottish host for the distinguished Asian Tour. The Torrance course offers a challenging test for the players this summer, blending the principles of links golf with a more modern style. Contouring the hotel and set against the backdrop of the picturesque east coast of Fife, the Torrance will test the short and long game whilst the risk-reward design provides numerous options both off the tee and for approach shots to the green. “The elevated nature of The International Series with generous purses, strong international fields, and the reward of a place for the Series winner in next year’s LIV Golf League all makes for a very exciting tournament in the summer.” Callum Nicoll, Head of Golf and Estates at Fairmont St Andrews

Fairmont St Andrews to host Asian Tour event
The Asian Tour is set to make history by staging an event for the first time in Scotland at Fairmont St Andrews from August 24-27.
The inaugural St Andrews Bay Championship will take place at the venue’s Torrance Course, a 7,320-yard layout that was designed by Sam Torrance and offers views over St Andrews Bay towards the town of St Andrews.
The course is no stranger to hosting top-class events, having previously hosted the DP World Tour’s Scottish Championship in 2022, the European Seniors Tour on six occasions between 2009-14, as well as Open Qualifying when The Open is held at St Andrews.
St Andrews Bay Championship will feature a 156-strong field who will be competing for a $1.5m prize fund in the sixth event of the Asian Tour’s new International Series schedule, and will be held a week after the International Series England, which is being staged at Close House in Northumberland from August 17-20.
Callum Nicoll, Head of Golf at Fairmont St Andrews, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be staging another world class event at Fairmont St Andrews, and to be making history as the first Scottish host for the Asian Tour. Asian Tour Defends Move To Host Tournament In St. Andrews
The Asian Tour has defended this week’s historic hosting the St. Andrews Bay Championship at the Home of Golf in Scotland.
The hosting of the $1.5m event right on the doorstep of the famed golfing city has attracted a number of LIV-based players including Masters champion Sergio Garcia and with fellow European Ryder Cup stars in Paul Casey and Bernd Weisberger.
The event is also among 10 tournaments featuring in the Asian Tour’s 2023 International Series in assocation with the Saudi Arabian-back LIV Golf and with this week’s host Fairmont Resort course, located on the eastern outskirts of the town, being just four miles from the R & A clubhouse.

Initial news to play an Asian Tour event certainly raised the eyebrows of many in the golf world including the DP World Tour that hosted two Hero Open’s on the Torrance course along with a Seniors Tour event while the R & A must also have questioned the move.
However, you only have to look back earlier this year when the DP World Tour hosted back-to-back events in Singapore and Thailand, and on the very doorstep of the Asian Tour without seeking the Asian Tour’s involvement.
As well, the Asian Tour was far from pleased when the R & A stripped the Asian Tour Order of Merit champion of an Open Championship invitation into the 2022 Open at St. Andrews and now also the recent Open Championship at Royal Liverpool due to the Tour’s links with Saudi Arabia and LIV Golf.
Asian Tour CEO Cho Minn Thant
Asian Tour Commissioner Cho Minn Thant addressed the decision to host a regular Tour event in St. Andrews in speaking with the BBC Scotland.
“It’s the home of golf, and we’re an international golf organisation, so why not?”, said Thant.
“We like to have that local flavour wherever we go.”
Thant has visited St. Andrews often in his role including last year in representing the Asian Tour at the 150 th Open Championship while he was a VIP guest at the annual Association of Golf Writers annual dinner ahead of catching COVID and being confirmed to his Fairmont Resort hotel room
“I think I’ve been to St. Andrews six or seven times now because it really does have the feel of the home of golf.
“Just being there in the town, you walk round the streets and on every corner there is a golf shop, or iconic hotel. The whole feel of the town is just ‘golf’. I do always make sure I go for fish and chips, too.”
Of course, the Asian Tour was in England last week for the International Series England event at Close House and with the tournament won by American Andy Ogletree by an impressive seven shots, who currenly leads the Asian Tour Order of Merit.
We also learned last week from LIV Golf star Graeme McDowell how much he would welcome an International Series event being played at his beloved Royal Portrush.
“We’ve been working very closely with the management of Fairmont so we can produce a very good-looking event on TV,” said Thant.
“We did Newcastle as a one-off last year but it made sense for us to do back-to-back weeks in Europe. The feedback from the players is that they would like that.
“So, we’re all really looking forward to this week”.

Breaking new ground as Asian Tour heads to Scotland
Golf in uae, golf in uae world.
The St Andrews Bay Championship will take place at Fairmont St Andrews on 24-27 August
The Asian Tour is set to make history by staging an event for the first time in Scotland at the much-acclaimed Fairmont St Andrews on 24-27 August 2023.
The inaugural St Andrews Bay Championship will take place at the venue’s Torrance Course, a 7,320-yard layout set among 520 acres of stunning Scottish coastline with views of St Andrews Bay. Designed by former Ryder Cup and golfing legend Sam Torrance , the course is marked by its deep revetted bunkers, large greens and links design. Less than five miles from the Home of Golf, where there is recorded evidence of golf being played as long ago as 1552, Fairmont St Andrews has previously staged many notable international events including on the DP World Tour, the European Seniors Tour, on six occasions between 2009 and 2014, as well as Open Qualifying.
Fairmont St Andrews owners Caleb Chan and Dr Peter Lam both hail from Hong Kong and their decision to host the event comes off the back of the inspired recent victory of Taichi Kho – who became the first Hong Kong player to win on the Asian Tour in just his third professional start on Tour. His victory in the World City Championship also earned him a berth in his first Major championship, this summer’s Open.
Callum Nicoll , Head of Golf and Estates at Fairmont St Andrews, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be staging another world class event at Fairmont St Andrews, and to be making history as the first Scottish host for the distinguished Asian Tour.
“The elevated nature of The International Series with generous purses, strong international fields, and the reward of a place for the Series winner in next year’s LIV Golf League all makes for a very exciting tournament in the summer.”
US$1.5m prize purse
Following immediately after the International Series England in an Asian Tour ‘UK summer swing’, the 156-strong field will compete for a minimum of US$1.5m prize purse on the modern links layout in the sixth installment of The International Series 2023 schedule.
Cho Minn Thant , Commissioner & CEO of the Asian Tour, said: “There are few greater experiences in golf than playing in Scotland. It is widely known that Scotland’s golf fans are among the most knowledgeable fans anywhere in the world and our players are really looking forward to teeing it up at a venue that is linked to the origins of the game as we know it. It is a true privilege.
“This is testament to the global vision of The International Series, and we are grateful to the dedicated team behind the scenes which has enabled the Asian Tour to grow from strength to strength over a short period of time.”
The Asian Tour’s elite-level International Series comprises of 10 events, featuring elevated prize funds, staged at iconic venues and welcoming top golfers from every continent and tour.
Home of Golf
Rahul Singh , Head of The International Series, said: “The St Andrews Bay Championship will provide The International Series with an incredible opportunity to visit the ultimate golfing destination, St Andrews, Scotland, and we thank Fairmont St Andrews for helping to make this possible.
“The chance to stage an event at the Home of Golf so early on in our journey will be truly inspirational for our players and everyone involved in The International Series.
“We are an ambitious initiative that aims to travel and go beyond our traditional borders to help grow the game and there can be no better place to play one of our events than where the game originated.”

He is currently freelance and covers the golf majors on the BBC Sport website. Highlights over the years include covering that epic Monday finish in the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor and watching Rory McIlroy produce one of the most dominant Major wins at the 2011 US Open at Congressional. He also writes betting previews and still feels strangely proud of backing Danny Willett when he won the Masters in 2016 - Willett also praised his putting stroke during a media event before the Open at Hoylake. Favourite interviews he's conducted have been with McIlroy, Paul McGinley, Thomas Bjorn, Rickie Fowler and the enigma that is Victor Dubuisson. A big fan of watching any golf from any tour, sadly he spends more time writing about golf than playing these days with two young children, and as a big fair weather golfer claims playing in shorts is worth at least five shots. Being from Liverpool he loves the likes of Hoylake, Birkdale and the stretch of tracks along England's Golf Coast, but would say his favourite courses played are Kingsbarns and Portrush.

Stars including Sergio Garcia and Joaquin Niemann sign up for Asian Tour’s International Series St Andrews Bay Championship
Sergio Garcia. Asian Tour
Sergio Garcia and Joaquin Niemann will be aiming to maintain their major momentum when they line-up in the Asian Tour’s inaugural St Andrews Bay Championship.
Spaniard Garcia and Chile’s Niemann both made the cut in last week’s US Open at Los Angeles Country Club and are looking to continue their good form in the second half of 2023.
Garcia’s fellow former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel of South Africa and Chile’s Mito Pereira have also confirmed their places in the starting line-up at Fairmont St Andrews from August 24-27.
The $1.5 million St Andrews Bay Championship will be the 12th leg of the 2023 Asian Tour season and the sixth stop on The International Series.
“As our first tournament in the country that gave golf to the world, the St Andrews Bay Championship promises to be a momentous week for us,” said Cho Minn Thant, Asian Tour Commissioner & CEO. “It’s fitting, therefore, that we should have Major champions such as Sergio and Charl and players of the calibre of Joaquin and Mito to grace this auspicious occasion.”
Garcia, who tied for 27th in Los Angeles last week, has appeared regularly in Asian Tour events over the past two decades and has the distinction of having won titles in no fewer than six different countries — China, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Part of the Asian Tour’s 2023 ‘UK Summer Swing’, the St Andrews showpiece will be preceded by the International Series England, at Close House in Newcastle.
The Asian Tour’s elite-level International Series comprises 10 events, featuring elevated prize funds and welcoming top golfers from every continent and Tour.
On his International Series debut in February, Garcia tied for fifth in Oman, alongside Niemann.
Following the first four International Series events of 2023, American Andy Ogletree leads the way in the overall standings with Japan’s Takumi Kanaya, Zimbabwe’s Kieran Vincent and Australian Wade Ormsby in pursuit.
Callum Nicoll, Director of Golf & Estates at Fairmont St Andrews, said: “We’re thrilled that established stars such as Sergio, Charl, Mito and Joaquin will be competing in this historic and world-class event at Fairmont St Andrews.”
Stretching to 7,320 yards, the Torrance Course at Fairmont, set among 520 acres of stunning Scottish coastline with views of St Andrews Bay, is sure to provide a tough test.
Sculpted by European Ryder Cup legend Sam Torrance, the layout has previously hosted the DP World Tour and European Seniors Tour as well as being a venue for Open Qualifying.
