All you need to know to visit the predjama castle, slovenia, introducing the predjama castle.

Predjama Castle or Predjamski Grad as it is called in Slovene is a Renaissance castle built in the gaping mouth of a cavern halfway up a 123-metre-high cliff. It is one of the world’s most dramatic castles and looks simply unconquerable. It is located in the village of Predjama, about 11 kilometres from the town of Postojna and 9 kilometres from the famous Postojna Cave in south-central Slovenia. It was built in the 12th century and first mentioned in 1274, but most of what you see today is from the 16th century. The castle is now a museum that shows the life in the 16th century, with an armoury, dungeon, halls, living quarters and other castle facilities. It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Slovenia.

Predjama Castle Review

The Predjama Castle is a beautiful renaissance castle built in the mouth of a cave in the idyllic village of Predjama, near Postojna, in the Karst region of Slovenia. It was constructed in the Gothic style in the 13th century and is considered to be one of the more significant architectural masterpieces of that time. To prevent easy access, the castle was built under a natural rocky arch high in the stone wall. The castle has changed ownership several times through its rich history, but the most infamous owner was Erazem of Predjama (Erasmus), a knight who controlled the land in the late 15th century. There are many varying legends about him. Some legends say that he was a passionate, handsome and noble knight while on the other hand he is described as a bandit and a robber baron.

Visit to the Predjama Castle is possible 365 days per year. It’s truly a very unique and very romantic sight throughout the year – during the spring and summer months the castle’s surroundings are covered with blossoms and flowers, in the autumn months it’s clad in a variety of different colors of surrounding forests and it’s especially magical in the winter when everything is draped in white. The castle itself is well run. The entrance fee includes a very informative audio guide in many languages with 29 points of interest throughout the castle detailing its history over the past 800 years. The castle is truly full of history and almost every part is talked about. Visitors can learn about the history of the castle and its owners, ask questions and get some interesting legends and knight stories. There are also many original items, as well as replicas and models in the rooms, halls and towers inside the castle. From May to September it is also possible to visit the picturesque Cave under the Predjama Castle.

I was here too. One of the highlights in Slovenia.

Loved our visit in 2019!

Well worth a visit, very interesting. 😊👍👍

We walk there from Lipizzaner Lodge, our B&B. Love it!❤️

I have been inside the Castle. Just amazing.

I have been to Postonja-but I have never seen this castle. Very well hidden.

It is fantastic place. I was there several time when I lived in Slovenia!

This is an interesting place to visit.

Been there, it is so amazing. Very rugged inside

Slovenia is full of castles and caves, we are doing our best to cover them!!

Was there few years ago the castle and area are amazing!

Amazing to go through this castle and see how they lived back then.

God it’s beautiful, I can only imagine what it would be like to live there.

Been here. There’s a legend that some guy holed himself up in the Predjama castle for more than a year while the castle was pounded with cannonballs, but the attacking forces didn’t get through. The only way they eventually succeeded was because a servant told them where the weak point was in the architecture of the castle. And the guy inside had a secret access and would taunt the attacking army with fresh foods.Took them forever to figure out how he was doing that.

The story is even more weird then that, the weak spot just happened to be the toilet and one time when Erazem went to use it the servant placed a flag showing where it was and indicating that he was using it at the time. The single cannonball fired at the spot killing him as he was taking a dump.

Predjama Castle Questions & Answers

how long is predjama castle tour

Can someone please tell me how long the tour is in the castle? And also how long it takes to go through the caves? Thank you!!!

how long is predjama castle tour

We did a combined tour with Slovenian Tours and the caves took about 2 hours (using a cave tour guide and skip the line). The castle was about 1 - 2 hours and our tour guide took us through and told us the stories. was much better having someone fill us in on the little details at the castle.

how long is predjama castle tour

There is no castle tour and is an extra to basic caves card. It would take you aprox. 20-30min. to check the castle

how long is predjama castle tour

We were there by car, but I know that the transport between these attractions, organized only during the main summer season . If you come out of season and you want to visit both places , you will have to walk 9 km or take a taxi .

how long is predjama castle tour

For castle 1-2 hours, for caves 2-3 hours.

how long is predjama castle tour

I did not tour the castle, just walked around the grounds but utilizing the so-called "internet", I found that there is no timed guided tour, you walk at your leisure.]. As for the caves, I toured the Skocjan caves and it is 2 hours. If you mean the lesser and more touristy Postojna Caves, I used internet technology to find out that it is a 1.5 hour tour. If you are referring to the caves below the Predjama castle, I again used the strange and mystifying internet to determine that it is 45 minutes.

Guide To Predjama Castle: Slovenia’s Fairytale Cave Castle

If a medieval fairytale type castle is one your agenda, look no further. Less than an hour from lovely Ljubljana Slovenia lies one of Europe’s most dramatic castles, Predjama Castle.

It’s a must see site in Slovenia, and one of the country’s most popular attractions. Tucked into the mouth of a towering cliff, it’s a cave fortress filled with secret tunnels and hidden caves.

Predjama Castle in Slovenia

Your first glimpse is breathtaking. Predjama Castle’s whitewashed walls are set off by the landscape and natural rock. It’s foreboding and exudes mystery.

Mini History of Predjama Castle

The photogenic castle was first mentioned in historical records in 1274.

It was built in a Gothic style in a nook that was intentionally hard to access. It’s over 400 feet high. The word Predjama means “in front of the cave.”

In 1570, the castle was rebuilt in its present iteration in a Renaissance style by baron Philipp von Cobenzl.

The aristocratic Lueger family, also known as the Knights of Adelsberg, subsequently acquired and expanded it.

One interesting factoid for Game of Thrones geeks is that George R. R. Martin visited Predjama Castle in 2012.

In his “not a blog,” he announced he was so taken with the unique castle that he might use it as a “model” for a Westeros castle in his Song of Ice and Fire book series.

And no fairytale castle is complete without an accompanying romantic folk legend. And Predjama Castle has one.

It’s a romantic legend featuring a rebellious knight and robber baron who fancied himself a Slovenian Robin Hood, named Erazem Lueger.

Erazem Lueger, robber barren and Slovenian Robin Hood

Erazem had a reputation as a robber baron who stole from the rich to give to the poor.

But Erazem got himself in a spot of trouble with the Habsburgs of Austria when he killed the commander of their Imperial army. Fleeing the Habsburgs’ wrath, Erazem installed himself in his family’s impregnable castle.

The Hapsburgs thought they could easily starve out the castle occupants. To their astonishment, Erazem withstood the imperial siege for one year.

How’d he accomplish that? There’s a secret tunnel and cave at the top of and behind the castle nicknamed “Erazem’s Nook.” The cave is also referred to Erazem’s Cave or Predjama Cave.

the cave behind Predjama Castle used by Erazem to circumvent the imperial siege

During the siege, the cave network and tunnels allowed Erazem to smuggle food and supplies in from surrounding areas, unbeknownst to his captors. He also used it as an escape route to continue his plundering ways.

There are some colorful tales associated with the siege.

In one, Erazem would taunt his adversaries by pelting them with fresh cherries. In another, to mock them even further, and perhaps because he knew they were hungry, he sent out a whole roasted pig.

Erazem’s story doesn’t end well though. Eventually, he was betrayed by one of his servants and had an ignominious end.

The servant sent a signal when Erazem went to the castle outhouse. The bathroom was in an easily targeted area on the outside of the castle. One cannon ball later, Erazem died Tywin Lannister style.

Guide To Predjama Castle: What To See

What makes this place special and visually appealing is that the castle is partly built into the cave.

The thick upper walls have chutes through which large boulders or boiling oil was poured on would be attackers. The moat and drawbridges also provided protection.

It’s worthwhile visiting the interior of the castle as well, if the entry fee doesn’t dissuade you. It’s a little bare, but there are quite a few exhibits. Even a medieval torture chamber. Each room is presented the way it would have looked in Medieval times.

Of special interest is the clever way Erazem installed pipes into the rocks of the caves. This way, he obtained crystal clear water for the use of its residents. This too helped fend off the siege.

The audio guide explains everything as you walk through.

the windows and coat of arms on Predjama Castle

Underneath the castle, there’s a massive cave. It’s the second longest cave in Slovenia, at 14 kilometers.

The section accessible to tourists is 700 meters long. The cave has a secret tunnel leading to the outside. And it’s home to a colony of bats.

In May through September, you can enter the cave as part of the regular tour. Other parts of the cave can only be accessed on a guided adventure tour for brave spelunkers.

There’s no electric lighting in the cave. You’ll be given a flashlight. The cave is closed in the winter months when the bats are hibernating.

Tips For Visiting Predjama Cave Castle

The castle is an east day trip from Ljubljana. You can combine the castle with a visit to the Postojna Caves, just 9 kilometers down the road. Here are some sample distances:

  • Postojna Cave to Predjama Castle — 15 minute drive
  • Ljubljana to Predjama Castle — 45 minute drive
  • Lake Bled to Predjama Castle — 1:30 drive
  • Piran to Predjama Castle — 1:15 drive

You can buy different bundles of tickets to suit yourself: entry to the castle, entry to the castle cave only, entry to the Postojna Cave, or a combined castle and cave ticket.

Check the website for prices (below). If you buy a combined ticket, there’s a shuttle that runs from the caves to the castle in the summer months.

It will probably take you a couple hours to see the whole site, if you go inside and explore the cave. The admission fee seems a tad steep, to me. Dress warmly or bring layers in the summer. It’s chilly. And there are quite a few steps inside.

There’s a small cafe outside if hunger or thirst sets in after your explorations.

Address : 6230 Predjama, Slovenia

Hours : Daily 9:00 am to 7:00 pm May through September and at least 10:00 am to 4:00 pm in the winter months

Entry fee : High season € 14.90, low season 13.80 euro.

Pro tips : There’s ample free parking around the castle. If the main parking lot is full, head (with caution) past the castle and down the hill to the left for additional parking. There are free public restrooms near the parking lot. There are none inside the castle.

Postojna Cave is an absolutely fascinating place to visit! The massive cave system features cavernous corridors and an abundance of magnificent stalactites and stalagmites. Extending across the landscape, the cave karst phenomena can also be witnessed at the nearby 12th century Predjama Castle.

Welcoming visitors for more than 200 years, Postojna Cave Park and Predjama Cave Castle firmly rank as top Slovenia tourist attractions. The two sights are located in southwestern Slovenia – just 30 miles (50km) from Ljubljana. Because of their close proximity, you can easily visit Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave from Ljubljana in a single day.

Plan a Trip: Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle

Amazing Large Cave, Postojna, Slovenia

Travelers have a few options when it comes to visiting Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle in Slovenia. Visitors with a rental car can simply drive; there is a paid parking lot at both the cave and castle.

Joining an organized tour is the easiest way to get from Ljubljana to Postojna. The half or full day trips alleviate guests from worrying about specifics. However, organized tours tend to be on the pricey side.

It’s also fairly easy – and about half the price of a tour – to set off on a day trip using public transportation. In fact, this DIY excursion is one of the easiest Ljubljana Day Trips to plan!

How To Get to Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle

Exterior view of the Predjama Castle, Slovenia

Visitors without a car can use the scheduled buses from Ljubljana to Postojna Caves. The direct bus is operated by Arriva . To search for the Ljubljana to Postojna Caves bus schedule online, select Ljubljana (Ljubljana AP) to Postojna Cave (Postojnska Jama). The cost of the bus ticket is less than €6 each way.

Getting to Predjama Castle from Postojna

Predjama Castle sits 6 miles (10km) from the Postojna Caves Park. Guests can get between the two sights via car, taxi or shuttle bus.

The drive between the castle and cave takes about 15 minutes. However, be aware that the paid parking is extremely limited at the castle entrance. Using a taxi to get from the caves to the castle will cost about €15.

The cheap way to get from Postojna Caves to Predjama Castle is the shuttle bus – which is available for free to guests with a combination Caves and Castle Ticket. However, the free shuttle bus only runs during peak periods (typically Spring Beak and Summer Vacation).

Predjama and Postojna Cave Tickets

Tickets to Postojna Cave start at €30. However, the basic entry fee only allows access to the cave tour – and there are many other sights to see in the area.

The Postojnska Jama ticket office sells a range of money-saving combination tickets that include multiple attractions. For example, the combination Predjama and Postojna Cave price is €42 – which provides a €7 savings over the individual ticket prices.

That said, the ticket package that we recommend is the Full Park Experience. Priced at €52, this combination ticket includes the cave tour, castle tour, vivarium and expo. We detail the highlights of each attraction in the next section.

Predjama and Postojna Caves Opening Hours

Opening hours at Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle vary by season. During the summer months, the cave and castle are open from 9am until 7pm. However, winter hours are limited to just 10am to 4pm.

Visiting Postojna Caves, Slovenia: What To Expect

stalactites and stalagmites, Interior view, Postojna Cave, Slovenia

Before making any plans, it’s best to have an idea of what to expect. From the guided tours of Postojna Caves to the top park attractions, we are dishing out the details of our experience to help fellow travelers better plan their day trip!

History of Slovenia Caves: Postojna Formation

View of Cave Formations, Postojna, Slovenia

Postojna Cave was formed millions of years ago by the underground Pivka River. The karst cave was created when the water dissolved the limestone and created an open space below the earth’s surface.

In the thousands of years since the now famous Postojna Cave was created, nature has been slowly, but steadily, decorating the interior into an array of rock formations. The stalactites and stalagmites are stacked from the floor and dangling from the ceiling like petrified icicles.

The subterranean space offers a beautiful, yet surreal, scene. The dazzling natural occurrence and sheer size of the underground chamber make visiting Postojna Cave one the best things to do in Slovenia!

Postojna Cave Slovenia Tour

Riding the Train into the caves, Postojna, Slovenia

The guided Postojna Cave Tour covers about 1 mile of the massive 15 mile passageway. The amusement park style Postojna Cave train ushers visitors through the hollowed earth.

When we departed the train and walked in the darkness, it took a few moments for our eyes to adjust to the dim lighting. Outside, the Slovenian summer sun was already hot, but deep in the Postojna Cave, the damp air cooled our skin and clung to our clothes.

As we stood in the vast space, known as the Great Mountain, we were beginning to see our surroundings more clearly…and we were in awe of what we were viewing!

Postojna Cave Rooms

Ceiling of Spaghetti Cave, Postojna, Slovenia

The guided Postojna Cave Tour takes visitors through three distinct sections of the cave. In some ways, the tour feels like walking through galleries at an art museum.

In the Spaghetti Hall, thousands of thin, white stalactites hang from the top of the ceiling. To us, it looked like a shreds of cheese dangling from a giant cheese grater.

In the next gallery, enormous stalagmites stand like dripping candles. The rocks in White Hall have a pearly appearance, which is obtained from concentrated calcium carbonate.

In the Red Hall, the stalactites and stalagmites are rust colored. The red hue is attributed to the iron minerals from the soil above.

Famous Postojna Cave Rock Formations

Room with rock formations in Postojna Cave, Slovenia

During the tour, visitors come face-to-face with some of the most spectacular stalactites and stalagmites in Postojna Cave. Some are so unique that they’ve been nicknamed!

Two, long, skinny columns that have joined into one are called “Romeo and Juliet.” The “Organ” looks like it’s been plucked out of a church. Meanwhile “Brilliant” looks like an enormous diamond on display, although, we think it looked more like a double-scoop of ice cream…or maybe we were just getting hungry!

Total Darkness in Postojna Caves Slovenia

In addition to the red, rusty color, visitors will notice that two other colors appear on the rocks – black and green – throughout Postojna Cave. The dark black is a naturally occurring pigment from manganese, however the green is mold.

The unnatural lights introduced to the interior of the cave facilitate the growth of mold, which is why lights are used sparingly and camera flashes are prohibited inside Postojna Cave.

To show us the true darkness of the cave, our guide extinguished the lights and we were enveloped in complete blackness!

Postojna Cave Human Fish

Mold, however, isn’t the only thing living in the cave. There are more than 100 species that call Postojna Cave home. Insects and spiders make up the majority of the list, but the most interesting creature to dwell in the cave is the Proteus. The animal is also referred to as an Olm, Baby Dragon and, our favorite, Human Fish.

The pale pink, salamander-like Postojna cave animal is completely blind. The ‘Baby Dragons’ grow to almost 12 inches. Most interesting is that it lives to be 100 years old and can go without food for 10 years at a time!

Where to See a Postojna Cave Dragon

Since these creatures would be fairly difficult to find naturally on a tour, a large aquarium holding Postojna Cave Human Fish is located inside the cave so that visitors could get an up-close view.

Our visit happened to coincide with a rare event: the birth of baby Proteus. Although they weren’t yet ready to be formally introduced, we could watch their movements on a video screen.

Postojna Cave Concert Hall

The last stop on the Postojna Cave tour is the incredible Concert Hall. Featuring fine acoustics, the space can hold an echo for five seconds and has been used as a performance hall by various singing groups. Equally intriguing is that the Concert Hall hosted an in-cave basketball event!

While in the Concert Hall room, visitors can stop by the world’s oldest (and only) underground post office. The Postojna Post Office has been sending letters and parcels since 1899 – and still does today. Before boarding the train to ride up to the exit, send a postcard to yourself as a memory of your trip!

More Things To Do at Park Postojna

Human Fish Statue, Postojna, Slovenia

Tours in the Postojna Cave last about 1.5 hours. Visitors who purchase the “Full Park Experience” ticket, however, have a lot more to see. The combo ticket also provides entry to the underground zoo, the expo center and the nearby Predjama Castle.

Vivarium Proteus Underground Zoo

Vivarium, Museum, Postojna, Slovenia

The underground zoo, Vivarium Proteus, features the insects and other creatures that inhabit the Postojna Cave. In 1831, the first cave beetle was discovered and it launched a new branch of biology, known as Speleobiology. A small laboratory and exhibits are located within Vivarium Proteus.

Expo Center Postojna

Old School Posters promoting the Caves, Postojna, Slovenia

The Expo Center is an excellent place to gain a better understanding of the history of Postojna Cave. Informative and interesting displays on the creation of the cave, as well as the story of it’s discovery and promotion as a tourist sight, are highlighted.

Particularly intriguing are the details of how Postojna Cave was originally equipped to handle the visitors. Exhibits share how it was originally lit and provides info about the development of the interior railway, which has been in existence since 1872.

Visiting Predjama Castle Slovenia

Up close view and detail of the Predjama Castle in a Cave, Slovenia

Perched in the middle of a 400-foot cliff, the stunning Predjama Castle is an impressive sight. The famous Slovenian Cave Castle was built 800 years ago, during the Middle Ages. What makes the castle so special is that is was constructed to incorporate a natural cave.

Inside, visitors can tour the secret passageways, find a natural water source and step inside hidden rooms. The one-of-a-kind ‘Castle in a Cave’ is unlike any other castle we have ever visited!

Predjama Castle Tour

Fun in the Armory Room, Predjama Castle, Slovenia

Visitors need about an hour to tour Predjama Castle – and perhaps another half hour to leisurely wander the grounds and take in the exceptional views from the various vantage points. A free audio guide, which is offered in multiple languages, is included with the Predjama Castle admission ticket.

When we toured the inside of Predjama Castle, we moved leisurely from room-to-room, soaking up all of the engaging history. Each area of the castle – from the dungeon to the dining room to the chapel – provides information about how the space was used.

For us, the highlight of the tour of Predjama Castle was the natural cave interior – and how it was integrated with the castle.

Where to Eat at Postojna

Squid Salad, Postojna Proteus Restaurant, Slovenia

Between visiting Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle, we suggest taking a break for lunch. There are a handful of restaurants at the cave entrance, but we recommend venturing into the center of Postojna Town for better options. On our trip, we ate lunch at Restaurant Proteus.

Lunch at Postojna Proteus Restaurant

Dessert, Restaurant Proteus Postojna, Slovenia

We chose to walk less than a mile from the cave to the town of Postojna for a fine dining experience at Proteus Restaurant.

The bright and atmospheric Postojna restaurant serves first class cuisine. Our decadent, two-hour, five-course lunch – of which the highlights were baked octopus in a tomato sauce and glazed lambchops – was complimented with delicious Slovenian wine!

Ready to discover the cave and storm the castle? Okay, first we have some advice that will help make planning a Day Trip to Postojna and Predjama a breeze!

What to Wear at Postojna Cave

Woman in Traditional Dress, Predjama Castle, Slovenia

The temperature inside the caves is about 46-50˚F year-round. I initially felt silly carrying a fleece jacket with me in the middle of August, but I was happy to have it after entering the cave! Jackets are available for rent at the entrance.

Also, make sure you wear good travel shoes , as the interior of the cave can be slippery and there are a lot of stairs in the castle. I wore these casual and comfortable Columbia Shoes and Kris wore trail shoes by Merrell .

What To Bring to Predjama and Postojna

Up Close Detail inside, Postojna Cave, Slovenia

Don’t forget to bring a proper travel camera ! At Postojna Cave, tour participants are permitted to take photos, but only without flash and your first glimpse of Predjama is one you’ll want to remember forever. We shoot with a Canon Rebel with a 18-135mm lens , which also comes with loads of accessories and makes a fantastic travel camera on a budget .

We also suggest carrying a versatile day bag . We use these small backpacks that are big enough to stow our camera, jackets, water bottle and snacks!

Where To Stay in Postojna

Although most will visit the cave and castle on a day trip, there are hotels in Postojna. In fact, the on-site Hotel Jama is located just outside the main entrance and is highly rated in customer reviews. Even if you’re not staying at Hotel Jama, you can tour the secret surveillance rooms from the time of Yugoslavia!

The fact that one of the most unique cave castles in the World can be found 9 km down the road at Prejama is just the cherry on top of the cake. Predjama Castle is built into a cliff and has hidden passages in the cliffside that make it seem like it’s out of a fairytale.

Given that Slovenia is famous for its caves and a castle in a cave sounds unmissable, I knew it had to be part of my Slovenia itinerary .

Predjama castle is a unique castle in a cave that you can find on a day trip from Ljubljana.

How to Get to Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle

Postojna cave.

By Car It’s a short drive on the A1 highway from Ljubljana, Bled, Piran, Trieste in Italy, and Rijeka in Croatia. There is a huge parking lot at Postojna Caves to park in.

By Train From the train station, it is a 10-minute walk to Postojna Caves. There is a train from Ljubljana to Postojna. Check out the train schedule here.

By Tour Starting from either Ljubljana or Bled, you can take this tour of both Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle.

If you only have time for a whirlwind trip through Slovenia, try this tour leaving from Ljubljana that will allow you to see not only the caves and castle but also Lake Bled.

A great option for cruise-ship passengers is this tour that leaves from the Cruise Passenger Terminal in Trieste, Italy.

Getting to Predjama Castle from Postojna Cave

If you are traveling by public transit, there is a free shuttle to the castle from Postojna Caves in the high season (July and August). Otherwise, you will have to get a taxi for the 20-minute ride.

When to Visit Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle

You can tour Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle year round. Be aware that in the offseason tours are reduced and not everything is open. Most notably, Predjama Castle caves are closed in the winter due to a bat colony that resides there. Check it out times here:   Postojna Cave Timetable and Predjama Castle

If you only take one fact from this entire article make it this one: Check tour times and show up on time. Seriously, you can’t explore Postojna Cave on your own and need to be part of a tour. You don’t need to book in advance, just show up.

Postojna Cave is full of stalagmites and stalacites, like this one. It's one of the best day trips from Ljubljana and can be combined with a visit to the nearby Predjama Castle.

What to Wear in Postojna Cave

The cave is damp and chilly so wear pants and bring a light jacket. You may also want to bring gloves if you get cold easily. The temperature inside Postojna Cave is a cool 10C.

Where to Eat at Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle

There are a couple of restaurants at Postojna Cave that offer up typical tourist fare like hamburgers and french fries. I ate at Magdalena Food and Fun and really enjoyed the french fries and donuts I had there. It also has a really cute interior.

There is also a couple of restaurants that have more traditional Slovenian food on the menu located on the river and at the cave entrance.

If you want to eat with a view of Predjama Castle, Gostilna Pozar has a simple menu for grabbing lunch.

Where to Sleep near Postojna Cave

If you want to stay in the area, there is a hotel right at the caves. Postojna Cave Hotel Jama is right at the caves and offers up gorgeous rooms at a reasonable price.

Looking for something more rural and you might enjoy Tourist Farm Hudicevec . It’s 10 km from Postojna and has a mountain view, sauna, and restaurant on-site. It’s a great budget option.

If you’re the type that likes to stay in apartments while abroad (like me!) Apartma Grze is a 15-minute walk from the caves and is a modern and budget-friendly place to stay.

Visiting Postojna Cave

Postojna cave train.

The tour of Postojna Caves starts off with a train ride.  Yup, that’s right, your one and only chance to ride a train through a cave. The journey is 3.7 km long and is only about 10 minutes of your time. It takes you through a dance hall with huge glass chandeliers. I was amazed at some of the stuff that we just sped by on the train. I couldn’t believe that it wasn’t even the best of what the cave had to offer.

The train ride that you take to do part of the tour at Postojna Cave near Predjama Castle in Slovenia. This cave is one of the best in Slovenia and Europe and is a must visit if you are in Ljubljana

After stepping off the train you start the 1-hour tour that takes place on foot. Everything is well lit with clearly marked paths. You’re going to want to take a lot of photos of everything but keep in mind that you aren’t allowed to bring a tripod. With huge caverns and tons of stalagmites and stalactites, the caves are stunning to walk through.

Stalagmites and Stalactites Postojna Cave, one of the best show caves in Europe. This is an easy day trip from Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia.

Postojna Cave Tour

On the tour route, you will pass by the oldest dated stalagmite called the Skyscraper. It’s 16 m high and about 150,000 years old. Apparently, in parts of the cave that are not on the tourist route, there are even older stalagmites that are half a million years old.

Stalactites on the ceiling of Postojna Cave in Slovenia. This is easily one of the best day trips from Ljubljana.

Near the end of the walking tour, you will also have a chance to see the white stalagmite known as Brilliant. It’s on quite a few postcards and is a symbol of the caves.

Brilliant, a famous white stalagmite in Postojna Cave, Slovenia. This show cave combined with Predjama Castle make for the perfect day trip in Slovenia.

Postojna’s Underground Post Office

You end the walking tour at a gift shop and post office. This is your chance to mail something from underground. After a brief stop there, back on the train to return to the entrance. At the end of the tour, you will also get a chance to see a glimpse of the river that runs through the cave and see Postojna’s cave-dwelling olm. The olm (AKA baby dragons) is unique for being the only vertebrate that lives only in caves in Europe. It’s a really unique, almost salamander looking creature.

Visit the Vivarium

After spending time in the cave, there are a couple other things to do at Postojna. The Vivarium shows off the old research facilities used to study the caves and cave life. There is also an exhibition section that shows off some of the cave animals that can be found in Postojna Cave. I found this pretty interesting as normally you would not get a chance to see these animals and definitely didn’t see any on the tour.

Baby Dragons- The Olm

The olm is known by locals as “baby dragons.”  They got this nickname because of Slovenia’s legends of dragons. Ljubljana even has a dragon bridge . These guys occasionally show up after floods that wash them outside of the cave. Because of their gills and body shape, locals thought that they were the babies of dragons. It’s all logical considering in the lore, dragons live in mountains or caves.

Legends aside, olms also go by their scientific name of Proteus. They are completely blind and are thought to live to 100 years of age.  It was a really big deal and exciting event when baby olms were hatched at Postojna in the research facilities there. You can check out photos and video of olms here .

Plenty of Stalagmites can be seen at Postojna Cave in Slovenia

Expo Cave Karst to Learn about Caves

The Expo Cave Karst is a huge exhibit on caves and karst. You can learn about how caves are formed and learn about karst. There is also a section on the development of the cave as a tourist destination and about early visitors. It’s interesting to see some of the earlier modes of transportation and think about how different it would be to visit the caves with lanterns instead of the lighting that is currently installed.

In the early years of the cave operating as a tourist cave, it was a tradition to sign the stalagmites found in the cave. Thankfully this no longer happens (I hope!) but you cannot remove the charcoal from the cave. You can see some of the old signatures from tourists.

Signatures on Postojna Cave Walls. It used to be very acceptable and an honor to visit and sign the cave.

Visiting Predjama Castle

After finishing up at the caves, you can head to nearby Predjama Castle. This mountain castle is just a short 9 km drive down the road. Predjama Castle is a Renaissance castle built into the side of a cliff. It’s the largest cave castle in the world and it’s been there for 800 years. There are secret tunnels behind the castle and you can explore the cave that is under the castle at some points of the year. It isn’t always accessible because there is a colony of bats that live in the cave.

There are no dragons here, but the cave does have its own interesting folklore. In the 15th century, the knight Erazem Lueger was the lord of the castle. Erazem was also known to be a robber baron. He became something of a Slovenian Robin Hood character. He was in conflict with the Habsburgs and apparently was known to give to the poor. The secret passageway used by Erazem to get food supplies from local villages while Predjama was under siege was never located.

Predjama Castle is a unique castle as it is built into the cliffside and has caves in it. This castle in a cave is a must visit in Slovenia. There is folklore that goes along with it, including a version of Slovenian Robin Hood.

Perfect Day Trip from Ljubljana

Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle make for the perfect day trip from Ljubljana. You can easily visit alone using a car or public transit, or join tours to visit. It’s located close to the capital so you spend most of your day seeing the sights rather than sitting in a car looking at the road. It was definitely one of the highlights of my time in Slovenia.

These caves are unreal, as you’ve mentioned. Stunning photos too – it looks like such a unique place to visit.

It was really unique! I haven’t visited a ton of caves but the sheer size of this one was just hard to take in.

Caves, dragons and castles! Sounds and looks like an incredible day trip. I love how the castle is built directly into the cave. Such a great defense mechanism. And I love the colorful history. I hope to get to Slovenia one of these days. When I do, I’m definitely heading to Postojna. Thanks for sharing!

The castle being built into the cave is so smart! I loved the history behind it. I hope you get a chance to visit Slovenia, there is so much to do there and it is so beautiful.

That does sound like an amazing day trip. I love castles and the cave looks stunning. it’s nice that you can get there easily by public transportation.

It’s so accessible from Ljubljana by transit or driving, it really is stunning.

The Cave train ride sounds awesome! I want to ride a train through a cave and then a dance hall with old school chandeliers. Postojna would totally be my cup of tea for a visit from Ljubljana.

The train ride was a really nice start to the cave. I couldn’t believe we were just rushing by such a large area but there were even better formations and sights to see after the train. The dance hall puts on concerts sometimes and I think that would be something cool to experience.

I love the idea of taking the train through the cave! My boyfriend has been there as well and really liked it. Great post!

Ya, it’s a nice tour through the cave! I had a really hard time choosing which cave to visit in Slovenia because I was also considering Skocjan, but the train swayed me to choosing Postojna.

Postojna Cave looks truly interesting but I loved the pic of the charming Predjama Castle. Thanks for the big tip about the risk of closures during offseason as it can help us to avoid disappointments.

Predjama Castle is really charming. I love the background story about Slovenia’s “robin hood.”

Postojna Cave looks like such an interesting place. I can’t believe how old it is and how there’s a post office in there! So random! haha

It was such an important tourist destination I guess the draw of a post office made sense for everyone wanting to send postcards! I sent a postcard from here so I could get the unique postmark of an olm 🙂

I can’t believe I missed this place when volunteering in Slovenia! I spent a good chunk of time in a country, traveling around, visiting hidden gems and corners but didn’t know anything about this cave! It looks absolutely magical! I want to return!

Oh gosh, I can’t believe you missed the caves, now you have an excuse to return 🙂 There are so many hidden-gems in Slovenia, it seems not quite on the main tourist trail, that I would love to return and spend more time there.

Predjama Castle Predjama 1, 6230 Postojna

The mighty Predjama Castle has stood in the middle of a 123-meter-high stone wall for more than 800 years. It is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest cave castle in the world.

It is also associated with the legend of robber knight Erazem Predjamski , who, after a dispute with Austrian emperor Frederick III, successfully resisted the besiegers of the castle for more than a year, until one of his servants betrayed him by lighting a candle in the window of Erazem’s room. This led his enemies to pelt him with stone bullets. Erazem’s grieving girlfriend is said to have buried his body in the centre of the village in front of the Church of the Sorrowful Mother of God, and planted a linden tree on it, which still stands there today and is known for its venerable age and hollow trunk.

Predjama Castle was first mentioned in 1274, when it was built by the abbots of Aquileia and was given a Gothic appearance. It was later rebuilt by new owners from the Luegg family, whose most famous representative is Erazem Predjamski. Predjama Castle is considered to be the only fully preserved cave castle in Europe, which, with its famous location, offers a unique insight into the construction techniques and ingenuity of the medieval people who sought refuge right next to the entrance to the cave.

This mighty castle has been the scene of numerous documentaries and feature films. Among them, the most prominent are the documentary-reality series of the members of Ghost Hunters International and the film Armor of God , in which the action movie hero Jackie Chan plays the leading role.

Inside the castle, you can see the renovated room of the main castle attic, in which many replicas of weapons from spears and halberds, to swords, warhammers, bows and crossbows, as well as armor are displayed.

In addition to visiting the world-famous castle, we also recommend visiting the cave under Predjama Castle , which is the second longest tourist cave in Slovenia, and the “Pri Stari dami” museum collection – it is a rich hunting collection and a collection of objects and weapons from the First World War, with an emphasis on the Isonzo Front.

The Treasure of Predjama

Did you know that the Predjama Castle hid a real treasure for several centuries until 1991? It consists of a small cup, three larger cups, a goblet with a lid, a goblet, a beaker with a windmill, a salt shaker and a candlestick. Ten objects of secular use are silver, covered with gold and richly decorated with plant motifs and other figures. In terms of shape and style, they belong to the last quarter of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century. The treasure find is available for visitors to see in the Notranjska museum Postojna.

Exploring Predjama Castle: Inside Slovenia’s Cave Castle

The inside of Predjama Castle is worth visiting. Predjama Castle is an 800 year old castle built into a cliff. It truly looks like something straight out of a storybook. In fact, stepping inside Predjama Castle will feels like being transported back in time to the middle ages.

Predjama Castle

What is Slovenia’s Cave Castle and is Predjama Castle Worth Visiting?

Slovenia’s cave castle is known as Predjama Castle, and this is truly a castle worth visiting. The castle was originally built in 1274. Since then a series of misfortunate events happened and the castle was then rebuilt in 1570.

Predjama Castle is like something out of a fairytale. Built into a rocky cliff ledge, the castle is connected by a series of hidden caves. Visiting the castle is an incredible experience, and is well worth it.

Slovenia’s Cave Castle has also been declared by the Guinness World Records as the largest cave castle in the entire world. It has become one of Slovenia’s best tourist attractions and is perfect for the whole family. Predjama Castle is also popularly featured in movies and tv shows, most recently in The Witcher season 3.

What does Predjama Castle’s inside look like?

The interior of Predjama Castle looks exactly like how you would expect a medieval castle to look, as it features exposed stone walls, narrow hallways, and medieval style rooms. The exposed stone walls are unique, and there is also a terrace that provides incredible views.

Stone Walls inside Predjama Castle

The interior rooms are decorated in a medieval style, making it interesting to walk around the interior of the castle. These rooms include an armory, dungeon, small chapel, medieval kitchen, courtroom, and bedroom.

The court room inside Predjama Castle

However, what makes this castle interesting is that it is built into the cliff and connected to a large cave system. Towards the back of the castle, is a small bridge that leads into a large entrance of a cave.

In our experience, this cave like room was one of the most remarkable aspects of the castle as it was so different from what you normally see in a castle.

How to visit Predjama Castle

Predjama Castle is located only 63 km from the capital city Ljubljana, Slovenia. This makes Predjama Castle a perfect day trip option as it is only around a one hour drive from Ljubljana.

Predjama Castle is open year-round from 9am-6pm in the summer months and from 10am-4pm during the rest of the year.

You can visit the castle on your own and buy tickets on site, or you can take a guided tour like this one which includes transportation from Ljubljana.

Predjama Castle is also located nearby the Postojna Caves, which are one of Slovenia’s most popular cave attractions and are worth visiting. You can easily visit both attractions in one day from Ljubljana, either on your own or on a tour like this one .

We visited both the Predjama Castle and Postojna Caves as a daytrip from Ljubljana, and I highly recommend it. There is also a nice café just outside of Predjama Castle that gives you an amazing lunch with view.

Can you visit the inside of Predjama Castle?

You can visit the inside of Predjama Castle, and it is absolutely worth visiting. While Predjama Castle is small in size, it is incredibly fascinating. It is also very much a medieval style castle, unlike other more modernized castles and palaces across Europe.

Predjama castle inside bridge

How long does it take to visit Predjama Castle?

To visit the inside of Predjama Castle, you will want to plan for around 1 hour to see the castle.

Inside the castle, you can take an audio guide which will take you through the different medieval rooms and give you more information about the castle and some of the interesting stories.

Can you visit the caves underneath Predjama Castle?

You can visit the caves under Predjama Castle (not to be confused with the Postojna Caves). The cave system at Predjama is much more natural and more difficult than visiting the nearby Postojna Caves.

To visit the cave system under Predjama Castle, you must go on a guided tour, and tickets can be purchased on site. For more information, check the official website here . The tour includes a helmet, but you will need to wear appropriate shoes and dress warmly, as this is an adventure-type tour. Tours for this cave only run between June-September, but you can visit the inside of Predjama Castle year-round.

My recommendation would be to visit the inside of Predjama Castle and then visit the nearby Postojna caves. There are many great options for this including this half-day tour from Ljubljana .

Predjama Castle: Inside the History and Legends of Slovenia’s Cave Castle

Predjama Castle has over 800 years of history as a medieval castle in Slovenia. However, one of the most captivating stories in it’s history was that of Erasmus of Lueg (known as Erazem Predjamski in Slovene).

The Enchanting Story of Erasmus of Lueg

Legend says that Erasmus was a Robin Hood figure of the 15th century, a distinguished knight that stole from the rich and gave to the poor, therefore becoming quite popular with the everyday people.

Exterior of the castle

However, in 1483 he killed Marshall Pappenheim at the Vienna Court, in retaliation for Marshall Pappenheim killing one of his close friends. Unfortunately for Erasmus, Marshall had powerful allies and relations, including the Holy Roman Emperor. In retaliation for this event, the Holy Roman Emperor sent for him to be captured.

Erasmus was captured, and was initially held at Ljubljana Castle before miraculously escaping. Although no one knows how he escaped, he most likely bribed one of the guards. After his escape, he made way to his home castle, Predjama Castle.

Erasmus and the Siege at Predjama Castle

At this point, the Holy Roman Emperor demanded Erasmus’ head, and sent the governor of Triste to lay siege upon Predjama Castle. The siege did not go as expected, and lasted for a year. The governor of Triste and his men were completely perplexed as to how Erasmus had enough food to last this long in a siege..

The Governor and his men began to believe that Erasmus must be working with evil sprits as there was no other way that they would have survived this long. Erasmus was said to have even taunted the men by throwing fresh fruits from the castle walls.

A hole through the stone wall

What the Governor of Triste and his men didn’t know was that Predjama Castle is connected to several long cave systems that lead out. These secret caves were used by the people of the town to supply food to Erasmus.

The siege finally ended when the Governor of Triste bribed one of Erasmus’ servants to switch sides. The servant explained that the toilet room was a weak spot within the castle walls. The plan unfolded with the servant lighting a candle in the window when Erasmus was in this particular room, and at that point the Governor of Triste’s men fired the canon into that exact spot, ending the siege.

Predjama Castle after the Siege

Predjama Castle was mostly destroyed after the siege, and the ruins were acquired by the Oberburg family to rebuild it. However, soon after a large earthquake hit the castle in the early 16th century, again leaving the castle to ruins.

In 1570, the castle was rebuilt again in the current renaissance style and is how the castle still appears today.

Is Predjama Castle haunted?

The mysterious Predjama Castle is 800 years old and has a long and sometimes dark history. Many have claimed that the famous Slovenian cave castle may be haunted, including a Discovery Channel team that visited Predjama Castle in 2008 in search of ghosts. Spooky.

What TV Shows and Movies have been filmed at Predjama Castle?

Predjama Castle has been both an inspiration and filming location for books, tv shows, and movies. How could it not be? This incredible medieval castle has such a captivating story and is such a unique place. Below are some notable things that have been filmed at Predjama Castle.

The Witcher Season 3 – One of the more recent popular TV shows to film at the Predjama Castle was the Witcher. No spoilers here but lets just say the Witcher ventures here to do what he does best – fight monstors.

Armour of God – The 1986 movie featuring Jackie Chan was also filmed at Predjama Castle

Game of Thrones – While the Game of Thrones show didn’t film at Predjama Castle, the castle is said to have been an inspiration for the book author, George R.R. Martin.

Where to Stay When Visiting Predjama Castle

I recommend staying in Ljubljana, as it is an incredible city full of lots of things to do and places to eat. Predjama Castle is only a 1 hour drive from Ljubljana, making it easy to drive there yourself or take a guided tour.

In Ljubljana, staying at Grand Hotel Union Eurostars is a great option. It’s centrally located near the heart of old town and has excellent reviews. Below is also a map with other hotels that are centrally located in Ljubljana.

However, if you have a car and want to stay next to Predjama Castle, I recommend checking out the beautiful Hotel Jama , which is a modern 4 star hotel that features a lovely bar and restaurant. This hotel has excellent reviews and is the best place to stay near the castle.

Having lunch outside

So, is it worth visiting Predjama Castle?

Predjama Castle is absolutely worth visiting and it is worth it to buy a ticket and go inside of the castle. Slovenia’s cave castle is incredibly unique, and while it may be small, it is such an interesting place. The history and stories about the castle are captivating, and going inside the castle truly transports you back into medieval times.

Take A Peek Inside The Largest Cave Castle In The World

Perhaps you’ve seen a cave. Maybe a castle. Probably cliffs. But have you ever seen them entwined in such a way that it’s hard to know where one stops and the next begins?

My husband Dean and I spent 3 days in Slovenia’s capital city of Ljubljana as part of the VBT pre-trip extension for our biking trip in Slovenia, Austria, and Italy . It seemed wise to get to Slovenia early so we could adjust to the time zone change before the actual cycling began.

Little did I know that this would give us free time to tour the spectacular Predjama Castle, the largest cave castle in the world. It has been perched in the middle of rocky Slovenian cliffs for more than 800 years. To add to the intrigue, somewhere beneath all that stone lies an intricate network of caves and tunnels.

Come along with me to learn more about this amazing place.

Predjama Castle, Slovenia

History Of Predjama Castle

More than 400 feet high, the Gothic-style Predjama Castle is embedded into rock. Historical records of the castle date back to the 12 th century, but archeological finds near the castle show human inhabitation as early as the Stone Age.

In 1570, the castle was rebuilt by Baron Phillip von Cobenzl with a Renaissance look and feel. Eventually, a wealthy family, the Luegers, acquired and developed plans for the expansion of this architectural wonder.

The Legend Of Erazem

What is a castle without a foolhardy knight? Part history, part legend, part warrior fabrication… who can say? (If we looked hard enough, I’m sure we could find a damsel in distress!)

As the legend goes, the Imperial Governor of Trieste owned the castle in the 15 th century, and his family, including his son, the not-so-honorable Knight Erazem Lueger, lived there. Through a series of events, Erazem made enemies with the Habsburgs of Austria and Austrian emperor Fredrick III. The emperor rallied his army to capture and kill Erazem, who fled to Predjama Castle.

The army’s plan was to starve out the castle dwellers by cutting off their food supply. To their amazement, Erazem and company held their ground for more than a year. How did they do it? Through an elaborate, hidden network of caves and tunnels to bring food and supplies into the castle!

Not only were they not starving, but they also apparently loved to flaunt their abundance of food by bombarding the enemy army with fresh cherries. Another time, it’s said Erazem delivered an entire roasted pig to them. So much for starving them out!

How then did Erazem meet his demise? The poor fellow was occupied in the castle’s restroom (on an outside wall for easier waste disposal) and a disloyal servant ratted him out to the enemy, who launched a strategically placed cannonball at a precise, inopportune time for Erazem.

Erazem was history, and the rest is history. The army invaded and assumed the strategic position of Predjama Castle. Or so the story goes…

Highlights Of Predjama Castle

It was remarkable to walk through this merging of castle and cave and cliff. We saw this combination everywhere. For example, we walked on floors that were obviously part of the castle, but an adjacent wall was the natural cliff.

We took a 60–90 minute self-guided audio tour through the castle. The castle has fascinating features, and the audio tour was quite entertaining and full of detail.

Pro Tip: Predjama Castle is a popular attraction that caters to visitors from all over the world; be sure to get the audio in the right language. Options that I saw included Slovenian, Italian, German, and Chinese.

Drawbridge at Predjama Castle

As we moved through the castle, we got to a higher floor toward the front of the castle, and the audio tour encouraged us to peer down a chute. I looked down to see the castle’s drawbridge and moat. Why this view?

The audio filled in the gaps. Apparently, one defensive tactic was to dump scalding water, hot tar, or large boulders down the chute onto enemies who tried to penetrate the castle. That would slow them down!

A bedroom in Predjama Castle

The Various Rooms

We toured several bedrooms, which were rather elegant and stately. The dining room was a large room, perfect for medieval feasting. Other rooms included a modest chapel and a large weaponry room with suits of armor, battleaxes, crossbows, and the like. We even saw a medieval torture chamber (yikes) located in a dungeon (where else would it be?) with a stretching rack and other “equipment” we won’t discuss.

The caves under Predjama Castle

Hidden Cave

We climbed a series of long and winding stairs to get to Hidden Cave, which appeared to be a landing with high, rocky ceilings. (Perhaps Erazem hid here?) From this vantage, we could see through a large opening into the Slovenian countryside.

We saw a large horizontal container near the ceiling that was used to collect rainwater. Pipes in the walls also funneled rainwater to other central collection points.

When we finished touring the castle, we rode in the shuttle about 6 miles to the next stop: Postojna Cave.

Under The Castle: Postojna Cave Park

As if the world’s largest cave castle weren’t fascinating enough, a network of tunnels and caves exists under the castle and into the area (perhaps there’s some truth to the Erazem legend?).

Postojna Cave , nicknamed “Queen of the Underground World,” is a system of 11 interconnected chambers. The whole area is called Postojna Cave Park. Discovered in 1818, it features about 15 miles of underground passages, galleries, and halls.

Pro Tip: The official entrance to the cave is about 15 minutes from the castle. You’ll either need your own transportation, to book a shuttle as part of a package (like we did, through our hotel), or take a shuttle between the two attractions, if it’s available.

The tour of Postojna Cave marked a first for me. I’ve toured caves before, but I’ve never taken an underground train to get deeper into one. We rode this unique railway for about 10 minutes through a series of corridors and chambers. At times, the track wound into areas where the ceiling seemed so low or the walls seemed so close that I instinctively ducked, although there was always enough clearance.

Another “first” on the train: We saw a chandelier in a large chamber of the cave!

When the train stopped, a guide took us through the cave for about 90 minutes, and we saw a variety of features, including the Stables, Main Passage, White Hall, and even Concert Hall with incredible acoustics.

The walking was very good (for a cave) — it was paved, the cave was lit, and some of the rocks were backlit. The cave is also apparently home to a colony of bats, but we didn’t see them.

We crossed over a walkway called the Russian Bridge that was built in 1916 (and likely renovated since). Later in the tour, we also walked underneath it.

Pro Tip: We weren’t here over the holidays, but the traditional Living Nativity in the cave features more than 100 actors and musicians who bring 16 biblical scenes to life along a 3-mile route illuminated by 2,100 lights.

Planning A Visit

Predjama Castle is a 45-minute drive from Ljubljana, and Postojna Cave is another 15 minutes from there. Tickets are required at these attractions.

We booked this tour through our hotel in Ljubljana, and it included transportation, the audio tour of the castle, and a guided tour of the caves (where we joined a much larger tour group). The drive and tours easily took us the entire morning; timing varies based on how quickly or slowly you move through the castle’s self-tour.

Pro Tip: Review information about shuttles, tickets, tour times, opening times , and parking before you visit. To save time, purchase tickets online, at least a day before you visit.

A Picture-Perfect Combination

The word predjama means “in front of the cave,” but in the case of Predjama Castle, the cave is behind it, underneath it, and all around it! I hope you enjoyed this peek inside this amazing place. It’s a picture-perfect combination of cave, castle, and cliff. Part lore, part fact, part legend: just what a medieval castle should be!

Pro Tip: There are stone steps and some uneven pavement in the castle, so watch your footing. When you tour the cave, dress in layers because the cave and train ride can feel cool.

Brief History of Predjama Castle

Perched majestically on a sheer cliffside, Predjama Castle is a medieval fortress steeped in history and legend. Its origins can be traced back to the 13th century, during the era of knights, chivalry, and feudalism.

The castle’s strategic location, built directly into the rock face of a towering cliff, provided a natural defense against invaders. Originally constructed by the Patriarch of Aquileia, Predjama Castle served as a defensive fortress, safeguarding the nearby region of Carniola.

One of the most intriguing tales associated with Predjama Castle is the legend of Erazem of Predjama, a cunning nobleman who defied the Habsburg Empire in the 15th century. Erazem, known for his rebellious nature, turned Predjama Castle into a haven and stronghold as he launched daring raids on the Habsburg forces.

The most famous exploit of Erazem occurred in 1471 when he successfully withstood a siege, using a secret tunnel that connected the castle to a nearby cave system to ensure supplies and escape routes remained accessible. This audacious act earned Erazem the reputation of a “Robin Hood” figure and solidified the castle’s place in history as an impregnable fortress.

Over the centuries, Predjama Castle underwent several renovations and expansions, adopting a primarily Renaissance architectural style. However, it managed to retain its medieval charm and defensive features, including a drawbridge, battlements, and a network of hidden passages. The castle’s interior has also been beautifully preserved, showcasing period furniture, artifacts, and artwork.

Today, visitors can explore the corridors and chambers of Predjama Castle, stepping back in time to experience the life of medieval nobility. Highlights include the impressive Knight’s Hall, the Chapel, and the fortified living quarters. The castle also hosts various cultural events and performances throughout the year, immersing guests in the rich history and ambiance of the medieval era.

Predjama Castle’s striking appearance and captivating legends have made it a popular destination for filmmakers and adventurers alike. It has been featured in films such as the James Bond movie “The Spy Who Loved Me” and continues to inspire countless stories of knights, outlaws, and romantic intrigue.

POSTOJNA CAVE & PREDJAMA CASTLE TOUR FROM TRIESTE

Visit Postojna Cave, the best-known cave in the world, and The Predjama Castle, the only preserved cave castle in Europe.

postojna cave trieste tours shore excursions

Postojna Cave, the queen of all caves, is the best-known cave in the world. It is also the greatest tourist attraction in Slovenia and one of the world’s largest karst monuments. This is the only place in the world where the underground landscape can be traversed on an electric train and where you get to meet this underground kingdom’s most famous inhabitant – the proteus (olm) – up close. A fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries and halls, astonishing diversity of karst features, as well as easy access are certainly the main reasons for such popularity of the cave and a large number of visitors (more than 36 million of them in over 200 years).

how long is predjama castle tour

The Predjama Castle reigns over the surrounding area, not far from the Postojna Cave, in the idyllic village of Predjama. This picturesque, magnificent, defiant, mysterious and impregnable castle has been perched up in the middle of a vertical 123-meter high cliff for more than 800 years. Its romantic appeal is further emphasized by the idyllic Lokva River, which disappears into the underground world deep down below the castle. As the only preserved cave castle in Europe, the Predjama Castle offers a unique insight into the building techniques and resourcefulness of people in the Middle Ages, who were looking for and found a safe harbor for themselves right at the entrance into the cave. During a siege that took place in the 15th century, the castle provided a refuge for its best known and most notorious owner – Erazem of Predjama. The legend about the courageous robber baron Erazem, who remained undefeated until one of his servants betrayed him, is still in people’s minds, inspiring and alluring as ever. It was this safe abode of his which helped the brave knight resist the besiegers without much difficulty for more than a year.
