Is your company aiming for a more diverse workforce? It all starts with an inclusive job description. An inclusive JD sets the tone for the candidates you’ll attract and eventually hire. Katrina Kibben , CEO of Three Ears Media, says:

It’s about changing techniques to provide more clarity, so any candidate from any background can understand the daily responsibilities and determine if they would like to do this job every day.”  source: SHRM

How to Write an Inclusive Job Description

Here are 5 great tips on how to write inclusive descriptions:

1. Focus on your “must haves” in your JD

When writing your JDs, make sure you only list the “must-have” requirements for the job. A best practice for all job descriptions is to keep your requirements list to 7 items or less. Many candidates get bored or move on after the 7th bullet.

An HP study shows men apply for a job even if they meet only 60% of the job qualifications. But, women only tend to apply if they meet 100%.

This also holds true for some neurodiverse candidates. For example, someone with autism might take your long list of requirements very literally and not apply if they don’t feel they meet each one on the list.

2. Use gender-inclusive words

Gender-coded words decrease apply rates and increase the cost per application . Removing them will increase your chances of attracting more talent from diverse groups.

If you want to write more inclusive (and gender-neutral JDs), it’s challenging to catch every gender-coded word. That’s why it’s best to use AI software like Ongig to automate the process and save yourself some time.

3. Remove gender-specific pronouns from your JDs

4. Remove other “biased language”

Outside of gender, many different types of bias creep into your JDs. Age bias is one example.

Age shouldn’t be a requirement for any role. If you want to attract skilled and experienced candidates, make sure your JDs are free from words like “youthful,” digital-native,” or “millennials-only,” to name a few. These words imply that your company prefers people from a certain age bracket and deters qualified applicants who are outside that age group.

  • disability bias
  • ethnicity bias
  • former felons bias
  • elitism bias
  • mental health bias
  • religion bias

5. Include a diversity and inclusion statement

Most candidates value seeing a D&I commitment when they’re looking for jobs to apply for. So when you think about how to write an inclusive job description, include a statement about your company’s stance on DEIB. Even if it’s short, still use it.

A diverse population of LinkedIn members in the U.S. said:

  • it emphasizes their commitment to DEI at the beginning and the end
  • there are very few masculine-coded words (which decrease apply rates)
  • only the “must-haves” are listed in the qualifications section (keeping this list short attracts more diverse talent)
  • it uses the 2nd-person point of view (you, they) to make candidates feel welcome and included
  • there are no “ exclusionary words ” that might deter talent from underrepresented groups

Plus, it’s short, so it holds the candidates’ attention.

Inclusive Job Description Example — CVS

Another great example of an inclusive job description is the one below from CVS. Here’s why:

  • the “Required Qualifications” list is short (opening up the role for candidates without loads of experience)
  • the benefits list includes things like fertility benefits, family support resources, and hybrid work options (great for women candidates, people starting families, or caring for older family members)
  • Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are also listed in the JD (this shows support for the inclusion of underrepresented groups)
  • there’s an “ anti-discrimination” statement and a DEIB statement

Tour Package

Package holidays, popularly known as a tour package or simply the word ‘tour’ in the travel and tourism industry refers either to a package tour escorted or not escorted by the tourist guide.

When we say tour package, it means a pre-arrangement, prepaid trip that combines two or more travel components like airfare, airport transfer, accommodation, and other services . Practically, to define the tour package concept is complex one rather understand.

Holloway defines a tour package as “a total tourism product consisting of transportation from the market area to the destination, accommodation at the destination and recreational activities promoted by the tourists.”

According to Gregorg “a tour package is advertised journey including specific features, arranged and promoted with tour literature by a tour operator and paid for in full by the tourists  before starting the tour.”

Technically, a package tour/tour package is a total tourism product as it generally includes transport from the origin place to the destination, accommodation at an en route place or at the destination and other recreational or travel services. These components are purchased by an individual, firm or company called the ‘ tour operator ‘. He combines all the travel components in a package and sells them at all-inclusive prices to the clients.

History of Tour Package

The term ‘tour’ was in vogue as early as 1670. The Britishers traveled to widen their knowledge of the continent, especially to study the culture and social life. This practice was gradually adopted by other lovers of cultural centers.

The result of the process was that many European historic and cultural centers were opened to the British tourist. By the early 1730’s the small fishing resorts around the British coast begin to attract tourists seeking to their diseases by drinking the sea-water or by immersing themselves in it.

The introduction of a rail link between the major centers in 1830, had a profound impact on the pleasure travelers for the first time. Many entrepreneurs began to inspire rail travel by organizing excursions for the public at discounted offers.

However, to ‘the origin of package tour’ the credit goes to Mr. Thomas Cook in 1855 , Cook, extended his business operation to different countries by introducing the first ‘ inclusive tour ‘ to Paris.

Mr. Cook put together all the components of tourism products and sold them as ‘inclusive tour’ to the tourists. His pre-packaged tour inspired other tour organizations in the travel industry to organize similar tours to all parts of the globe.

Most of Cook’s tours were a linear tour i.e., the person went from place to place on a single destination. Basically, Mr. Cook developed the concept of ‘grand tour and escorted tour’, the concept which is still used.

Incidentally, World War II has tremendously developed the package tour concept because of the following reasons:

Today, package tours are a vital segment of the world’s travel and tourism industry. According to WTTC, the package tour sales generate $25 billion annually in the United States, $18 billion in Europe, $19 billion in Britain, and $21 billion in Asia. Today tour sales represented 50 percent of all leisure travel sales and 35 percent of all travel agency revenues.

Day 1 Shannon-Galway. Morning arrival at Shannon Airport where after clearing customs you are met by your Professional Irish Driver/Guide. Leaving Shannon Airport you travel via Limerick, Irelands 3rd largest city. Early morning drive through Ennis to Go on to Galway. Check into our hotel for a short rest… This afternoon we tour rugged Connemara. We take in the magnificent views of the Connemara region, Ireland’s treasure of wild, natural beauty where Gaelic remains the only spoken language. We travel via Clifden to Kylemore Abbey, monastic home of the Benedictine Nuns before returning to Galway. After dinner why not enjoy a pint at the pub “AuPouchan” a short walk from Eyre Square with great Irish Music. Overnight Hardiman Hotel or ASHFORD CASTLE (Ask for Rates)

Day 2 Galway-Cliffs of Moher-Killarney. After breakfast we head south through the rugged Burren. We stop at The Cliffs of Moher which rise 700 feet and stretch along the Atlantic Coastline for five miles. Enjoy the view and perhaps a coffee before continuing along the coast as we head towards Killmer to take the Tarbert Ferry to cross the Shannon Estuary. We then continue south through Abbeyfeele and on to Killarney. Enjoy a late lunch before checking into your hotel. You could decide to eat your hotel this evening; however, another suggestion is to check out “Gaby’s”. It is in the middle of town where you will be and has great seafood. Plenty of local pubs to hear great music this evening. Overnight Killarney International Hotel.

Day 3 The Dingle Peninsula. After breakfast, experience the true beauty of Ireland on this full day tour to the breathtaking Dingle Peninsula. Traveling via Tralee and The Slieve Mish Mountains we will stop in the sleeping fishing village of Dingle before heading out to see Slea Head and the ominous views of The Blasket Islands With its 12th century Beehive Huts, its ominous views of the Blasket Island originally home to Irish Monks, we have been told by many travelers that the awe-inspiring beauty of this particular area has left them with a truly spiritual feeling. Suggested lunch stop in Dingle is Maria DeBraae, right on the main street, Dingle. We depart Dingle and travel via Tralee where every August the famous Rose of Tralee Festival is held. Tonight, enjoy many of the local restaurants Killarney has to offer. Overnight Killarney International Hotel

Day 4 Killarney-Macroom-Blarney-Kinsale. After a leisurely breakfast we depart Killarney and travel over the Derry Nasaggart Mountains to Macroom. Macroom Castle is the boyhood home of William Penn during the years that he lived in County Cork. It stands on the western margin of the town of Macroom, and its windows look away into the distance where a rugged land lies at the foot of the mountains. We continue to picturesque Kinsale. As part of the European conflict raging between Catholic Spain and Protestant England, Spain sent a force of men to support the Irish leader O’Neill. The rendezvous was set for Ulster, however the Spanish under Aquila landed at Kinsale in October 1601. Here they soon took possession of the local strong points. Kinsale is now noted as “The Gourmet Capital of Ireland” and is especially noted for its seafood. Be sure to partake of this fine food at The Blue Haven. Stroll through the narrow street filled with local artisan’s ware. Overnight Trident Hotel.

Day 5 Kinsale-Kilkenny-County Laois-Dublin. Morning departure from Kinsale takes us through the Medieval Town of Kilkenny. Time to visit Kilkenny Castle (optional) which in the last few years has been completely restored with original artifacts. We continue through County Laois, stopping as you like to see the county of your Irish Heritage. You may also eliminate Kilkenny to spend more time in Laois. We continue to Dublin where on arrival we bid farewell to our Irish Driver Guide. By now he surely has become a part of our family. Overnight Davenport Hotel.

Day 6 Dublin. Our last day in Ireland presents itself with a plethora of activities. I would suggest taking a ½ day sightseeing tour of this 1000-year-old city. You can purchase you tour from the Dublin Bus Company which is located at 69 O’Connell Street. You will be sure to see ST. Patrick’s Cathedral where writer Jonathan Swift gave his sermons, The G.P.O. on O’Connell Street scene of the 1916 Easter Uprising where the bullet holes till remain to this day. Drive through famous Phoenix Park where the Pope said Mass in late 70’s and finally Trinity College to view the 8th century manuscripts, The Book of Kells, still preserved as they were when the Monks produced them all those centuries ago. Make sure to visit Dublin’s oldest Pub, O’Donohues for a last pint! Overnight Davenport Hotel.

Day 7 Dublin-USA. Make your way to Dublin Airport allowing time for last minute duty-free shopping before boarding your flight.

Travelers looking for a hassle-free trip usually seek an all-inclusive tour package. It’s an enticing product to promote and include within your marketing strategy and can help you boost your bookings. Most travelers would usually seek a travel agency to provide them with the best packages. However, if you could set up tour packages yourself, you may be able to attract customers to book packages through you directly.

What do customers look for in a tour package?

When understanding the first steps on how to create a tour package, you need to understand your target audience. What is it that they prioritize? Is it affordable airfare? Easy car rental? Isla Contoy is in the State of Quintana Roo and is located at the point of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 30 kilometers north of Isla Mujeres. Day 1 itinerary.

Today you will immerse yourself in Egypt's history with a visit to the famous Egyptian Museum. Following this, you will visit Cairo's most prominent Islamic attraction, the Alabaster Mosque, and then stroll through the Khan el-Khalili bazaar. Housing over 65,000 Egyptian artifacts, the Egyptian Museum attracts millions of visitors annually. The highlight of the Museum is the priceless treasures of King Tutankhamun . His 6-gold gilded coffins dominate the main hall, while his magnificent gold mask is the star attraction! Your Egyptologist guide will introduce you to the most important pieces before allowing you free time to explore the Museum at leisure. Here you can also visit the “Royal Mummies Room,” where you will learn about the ancient art of mummification (optional, for an additional cost).

Following your visit to the Egyptian Museum, you will tour the Alabaster Mosque at the Citadel of Salah el-Din, which sits on top of a limestone hill overlooking Cairo and is the most important mosque in the city. The lower part of the Mosque is clad inside and out with Alabaster, while the top part is constructed from the limestone cladding removed from the Pyramids of Giza. Inside the mosque, your guide will introduce you to the fundamental beliefs of Islam, including a translation of the most common prayers.

Then you will discover the ancient sites and culture of Coptic Christians and learn about Christian life in Egypt, a country where Christianity is a minority. You will first visit the Hanging Church, built into the walls of the Roman fortress's watergate and possibly the oldest Christian church in Egypt. It is one of Cairo's most beautiful churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Continue to the Monastery and Church of Saint George. It is one of the few remaining circular churches in the Middle East.

Your next stop is the Abu Serga, where the Holy Family rested after fleeing Israel from King Herod. At the turn of the century, this little church, which dates from the 10th century, was the most important pilgrimage spot in Old Cairo for visiting Christian tourists. Twenty-four marble columns line the central court, and a series of 12th-century icons depict the 12 apostles. You will then tour Ben Ezra Synagogue, one of the oldest synagogues in Egypt. Set in a shady garden, it was built on the site of the 4th-century Christian church. After that, you will visit the Khan el Khalili bazaar, where your guide will introduce you to the famous bazaar, which is said to have inspired Christopher Columbus to discover the New World. Here you will enjoy free time to stroll through the maze of streets and shops and try your luck bargaining with the shop owners for a souvenir of your trip to Egypt or have a cup of tea at the famous coffee shop “El Fishawy.”

This private Egypt tour allows you to determine the amount of time you will spend at each site. In addition, you will have the chance to visit a Papyrus Institute to see how this famous artwork is made and have the opportunity to purchase genuine items if you wish. After the conclusion of your tour, you will be taken back to your hotel for drop-off.

Reservations should be made as early as possible to book the desired holiday. Space on a given tour will be secured upon receipt a deposit of 25% of the full price. An inclusive job description takes those basic ingredients and amplifies them. It transforms your job description into a powerful tool that appeals to more (and more qualified) candidates.

What’s in an inclusive job description?

Job descriptions are the foundation of your hiring process. And an inclusive job description sets the tone for a more inclusive hiring process . They appeal to as many qualified applicants as possible and encourage people of diverse backgrounds to apply. 

Inclusive job descriptions demonstrate your company’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB). They use inclusive language, highlight specific DEIB policies, and outline inclusive benefits your organization provides. 

What does “inclusive language” refer to?

The Linguistic Society of America says that inclusive language “acknowledges diversity, conveys respect to all people, is sensitive to differences, and promotes equal opportunities.”

Inclusive language in job descriptions is:

  • Gender neutral. Free of pronouns and masculine-coded phrases.
  • Age-inclusive. Doesn’t try to reach one age group over another.
  • Disability-inclusive. Doesn’t assume applicant ability.
  • Culturally sensitive. Free of offensive phrases and references to national origin, ethnicity, race, religion, or sexual orientation.
  • Stereotype-free. Doesn’t assume what kind of people are applying.
  • Free of exclusive phrases. Welcomes a range of qualified candidates.
  • Low on jargon. Free of insider language, buzzwords, or excessive abbreviations.

Why are inclusive job descriptions important?

Before we cover how to write inclusive job descriptions, let’s discuss why you need them. 

Attract diverse talent

Making job descriptions inclusive will draw in more diverse applicants. People of color, women, and LGBTQ+ people are more likely to turn down non-inclusive jobs. Don’t let your choice of words alienate or marginalize whole communities.

Maintain compliance

The U.S. Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) protects people from discrimination based on race, skin color, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy status, age (if 40 or older), disability, or medical history. Follow the law and maintain recruiting compliance with inclusive job descriptions. 

Promote diversity and inclusion

McKinsey found that 39% of participants turned down or stopped pursuing a job because they saw a lack of inclusion at their prospective employer. That’s too many applicants to lose when you’re on the hunt for great talent.

Enhance employer brand

Research shows that 86% of candidates consider an organization’s approach to DEI when searching for work. An inclusive job description shows potential candidates that your brand cares too.

Improve employee engagement

There’s a statistically significant relationship between DEIB practices and employee engagement. Attract engaged em ployees with inclusive job descriptions and see improved business outcomes, like reduced turnover and increased productivity.

Foster innovation and creativity

Diversity increases innovation, improves decision-making, and promotes creativity. If you want adaptable teams that make better decisions quickly or deliver 46% more innovation revenue , prioritize inclusive hiring.

The impact of inclusive language on diverse candidates

Words have the power to cause harm. They might be offensive, marginalizing, or perpetuate stereotypes. On the other hand, inclusive language is welcoming and respectful. 

Using DEI language for job descriptions shows that your organization is committed to inclusion. It also helps foster trust between potential employees and your company. And signals that all employees are valued.

How to identify biased language in job postings

Biased language can be outwardly rude or hurtful. It can also be so subtle that a writer doesn’t notice they’re using it. For example, “Even if you’re a woman, you’ll do well in this job” is clearly offensive and needs revision. Using job titles like “chairman” or “businessman” instead of “coordinator” or “professional” is more subtle but should be fixed too.

Biased language doesn’t just apply to gender. Requesting “native English speakers” could exclude immigrants or people who speak more than one language. Using common terms like “pow-wow,” “circle the wagons,” or “guru” is also culturally insensitive. 

Asking applicants to be “crazy about success” or “OCD about meeting deadlines” is offensive to people with mental health diagnoses. And requiring “digital natives” who want to work in a “fast-paced environment” excludes older, more experienced workers.

Best practices for writing inclusive job descriptions

You know the why, so let’s tackle how. Use these best practices to write better and more inclusive job descriptions today.

Define essential job requirements

Remove nice-to-haves and only request must-haves. For every job requirement you add, you increase the risk that great candidates will self-select out. Women are especially likely to do this—they tend to apply if they meet every single job requirement.

Be clear about potential job responsibilities too. Many applicants want to know role specifics, so be upfront about job duties to manage expectations.

Focus on transferable skills

Transferable skills are useful in any work situation and can carry from job to job. For instance, empathy, conflict resolution, leadership, and communication skills are transferable. Hiring for skills is up to 5 times more predictive of employee success than work experience or educational background.

Industry-specific skills are taught more easily than transferable skills. Attract high-quality applicants from other industries by ranking transferable skills over industry skills. And know that not all applicants have had the same chances for career advancement or schooling, so hiring based on skills is more inclusive too.

Avoid unconscious bias

To reduce bias in your job descriptions, learn what your own biases are. When you understand them, you can work to counteract them. Taking a Harvard Implicit Association Test will help you identify where you might be biased.

Use clear language

Avoid jargon, clichés, or work-specific phrases. Not all job seekers come from an English-speaking background or a background in your industry. Don’t discourage them with too much insider language.

The average American is comfortable reading at a 7th or 8th-grade level, so your job descriptions should be easy to understand. Keeping the language simple will also benefit neurodiverse candidates, candidates with reading comprehension difficulties, or people who speak multiple languages.

Use accurate job titles

Write job titles clearly. Avoid trendy phrases or gender-specific titles. Don’t say things like “salesman” or “marketing ninja.” Your job won’t appear in job searches, and you’ll turn off non-male candidates.

Consider, too, that more potential employees have skills in multiple fields and are willing to go beyond “traditional” job responsibilities. Don’t narrow down your talent pool with hyper-specific job titles. For example, instead of asking for an “SEO Expert,” seek a “Marketing Lead.” Or, instead of “Receptionist,” consider “Workplace Coordinator.”

Use gender-neutral language

Many job descriptions use language that appeals only to men. To appeal to women and gender non-conforming applicants, use neutral language instead. Feminine-coded words are also okay, as men aren’t as easily deterred by “feminine” language.

Masculine-coded words to avoid include “ambitious,” “dominant,” and “competitive.” Inclusive, feminine-coded words are “collaborative,” “compassionate,” and “interpersonal.” Common examples of gender-neutral words are “creative,” “knowledgeable,” “organized,” and “self-aware.”

Avoid age-related language

Don’t turn away experienced potential employees with language that targets young applicants. Avoid phrases like “tech-savvy” and “young at heart.” Don’t ask after internships or GPAs. And include younger applicants by avoiding words like “seasoned” or “proven.”

Age-inclusive phrases include “adaptable,” “flexible,” or “engaged.” To be even more inclusive, consider removing any “years of experience” requirements too. The number of years someone’s worked won’t tell you what they can achieve.

Provide salary transparency

Candidates don’t trust organizations that don’t share pay ranges. They worry their salary will suffer because of bias. The pay gap is a problem, too—women still earn 84% of what men do, and Black households only hold 12.7% of wealth compared to white households.

To attract these candidates, help shrink the pay gap, and gain candidate trust, share salary ranges. As pay transparency laws are becoming more common, it’s important to make sure you’re following them too.

Highlight career growth opportunities

If you offer stipends for continuing education or programs for development, share them in your job descriptions. Including these benefits will attract motivated candidates and improve employee retention. Make it clear you want great candidates who will stick around.

Highlight your company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion

70% of job seekers want to work for companies that prioritize DEIB. Using DEI language for job descriptions—language that demonstrates openness to diverse candidates—will reinforce your company’s commitment to inclusion.

Consider adding an Equal Employment Opportunity Statement to your job descriptions too. Descriptions that include EEO statements fill positions faster and convey your dedication to DEIB .

Seek input from diverse teams

If you have a DEIB committee or diverse colleagues willing to help, ask them to review your job descriptions. They can help point out problematic words or things that would make them uncomfortable applying for that job.

Do not do this without their consent, though. Just because you have a co-worker from a diverse background does not mean they want to be a resource for all diversity efforts.

Review and iterate

If they’re open to it, have your DEIB team review your job descriptions and offer feedback. Other members of your hiring team or current employees can help ensure job descriptions paint an accurate picture of your company. Or candidates you’re actively interviewing can share what attracted them to apply. 

When you first learn how to write inclusive job descriptions, you might not get it perfectly the first few times. That’s okay, as long as you’re willing to keep getting better. Take the time to research more inclusive job description examples . And incorporate any feedback into your job descriptions for more inclusive versions in the future.

Monitor the impact

Track how your new job descriptions are performing. Monitor views, clicks, and the conversion rate of job ad views to applications. Adjust as needed.

Over time, keep track of employee retention, turnover, performance, and satisfaction. Learn how well your inclusive job description efforts paid off.

Addressing accessibility in job descriptions

Avoid job description language that implies ability, like “you’ll walk door-to-door” or “you’ll see clients.” Instead, try “you’ll canvas neighborhoods” or “you’ll connect with clients.” Focus on role requirements, and let the candidates manage “how” in a way that works for them.

Remember, accommodations aren’t just for recognizable physical disabilities. Be inclusive of candidates who require accommodations for mental illness, neurodiverse candidates , or applicants with hidden disabilities. 

Consider including video clips with your job descriptions for people who process information differently. Work to simplify your language as much as possible. And make it clear that your organization offers Employee Assistance Programs or other ways to accommodate individual needs at work. Adding an Accessibility Accommodation Statement will show you’re committed to meeting employee needs too.

Leveraging technology for inclusive job descriptions

As you write more inclusive job descriptions, specialized tools can help you. Some technologies will evaluate your text for biased language, while others will provide suggestions for improvement.

Programs that use AI, like ChatGPT , can be a good place to start outlining more inclusive descriptions if you aren’t sure where to start. If you want to check that your job descriptions are easy to read, use a tool like the Hemingway Editor or the grammar checker Grammarly . Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

To be honest, part of what made the trip fantastic was our group of 12- could not have had a better group to travel with- which is clearly luck, but a piece of our group being so cohesive was Nejca, our guide. She was perfect! Available but not pushy. Laid back, but willing to assert herself to make our experience the best. She made each person in the group feel special and appreciated. Thank you, Nejca! The itinerary was quite good as well. Although there were places I could have stayed for a day longer, I think it’s important to not stay too long and feel like time is wasted on a certain place on the tour. Transportation was efficient and Nejca did a great job getting us to our destinations easily and without rushing. Accommodations were very good- with the exception of Prague. Although our apartment was nice, it was clear that the residents of Prague feel that their space is being taken over by tourists- which is clearly true. I would have preferred to have stayed in a hotel in Prague-honestly, I would have paid more for it. Other than that, cannot day enough good things about the trip! Thank you!!

I went on this trip in mid October and surprisingly the weather was great enough for swimming. Simon was my guide with Chris as our bus driver. The first couple of days were short as it required some long hours of driving, but it was all worth it. The tour was awesome. Too bad it was short. Our Tour leader Noddy perform extremely well job organizing and controlling our big group so we was on time everywhere. 11 ways to create inclusive job descriptions

It’s important for companies to reduce, if not eliminate, bias when hiring - especially in candidate communication. 

Diversity hiring starts with writing inclusive job descriptions, which should allow people from diverse backgrounds to apply for the job.

Use gender-neutral language.

Crafting gender-neutral job descriptions can help you reach out to a more inclusive, broad, and balanced selection of applicants.   

Unfortunately, gendered words still find their way into many job advertisements. 

Research shows that women feel they need to meet 100% of the job requirements before applying, while men often use them after completing only 60% of the requirements.

According to LinkedIn Gender Insights Report , women are more selective when they apply for jobs. They tend to screen themselves out of the conversation and submit fewer job applications than men. 

There are millions of highly-qualified female candidates, but you may miss them if your job description has too many male-coded words. And the same happens when you overlook eligible male applicants because you’ve used too many female-coded phrases. 

Use gender-neutral words to write job descriptions that appeal to both males and females.

Check out these tips: 

1. Use gender-neutral job titles

Job titles are the first thing an applicant sees in your job description, so it's crucial to use gender-neutral job titles to entice candidates to click and read the rest of your job posting. 

For example, if you use policeman in your law enforcement job ad, you may deter highly-experienced female police officer candidates from applying to your job advertisement. 

Some gender-neutral job titles:

  • Chairperson instead of Chairman and Chairwoman
  • Firefighter instead of Fireman
  • Supervisor or Mananager instead of Foreman
  • Flight Attendant instead of Flight Stewardess
  • Salesperson instead of Salesman

‍ 2. Use gender-neutral adjectives 

Gender bias is not only limited to job titles. It also extends to adjectives used in the company information, responsibilities, qualifications, and requirements. 

Using gender-neutral adjectives in job ads helps you reach a broader and more diverse set of candidates. 

Gender-neutral adjectives examples:

  • Articulate, tactful, persuasive instead of pleasant or assertive
  • Aystematic, organized, accurate instead of analytical or logical
  • Sound, steady, decisive instead of superior or strong

3. Avoid using “he” or “she.” Instead, use “you,” “they/them,” “people,” or “the candidate.”

You may unconsciously craft your job descriptions, assuming that the position is more appropriate for a male or female. 

Using ‘you’ pronoun covers all genders and sexual orientations. It also gives the applicant the impression that they’re being spoken to directly. 

In their Freelance Copywriter job posting, Canva uses ‘you’ on its job requirements instead of using him or her:

  • You have a good grasp of your local language in terms of sentence construction, spelling, and grammatical structure. And because less than 50% of our community is English-speaking, you consider your output carefully.
  • You are meticulous with details, style, and tone, writing with clarity and empathy to deliver what is needed.
  • You are quick with ideas, coming up with original template copies that can catch our user’s eye but can still match Canva’s voice and brand guidelines.

Avoid racial bias

Like gender bias, racial bias can be unconsciously implied and often unknowingly when you think about the people you need to hire. 

Here are some tips to avoid racial discrimination in your job descriptions to attract diverse candidates.

  • According to Ongig, avoid using derogatory terms associated with certain races, ethnicity, and the indigenous group. 
  • Don't use terms that show bias against immigrants like ‘illegals’ or ‘illegal immigrant’. Instead, use refugee, immigrant, or undocumented immigrant.
  • Don’t use ‘English native speaker' , since many non-native English speakers can be fluent in this language. Replace it with ‘fluent in English’ or ‘proficient in English.’ 

Avoid affinity bias 

Affinity bias shows when a hiring manager favors a particular job seeker because they have a similar background. 

To know and understand the different affinity biases when writing a job posting, read on: 

  • GPA bias - new graduates are recruited by achieving a grade point average or GPA.

Here’s an example of a GPA bias in a job description for a Data Reporting and Analytics Intern : The requirements include a 3.0+ GPA and a steep grade to achieve, especially for math subjects. In reality, GPA doesn’t fully measure someone’s knowledge.

Junior or senior level student currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, seeking an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field. Must have at least a 3.0 GPA

  • College or university bias - some managers may be biased toward candidates from top colleges, especially if they also attended a top university
  • Club membership bias  - The hiring manager may select the candidate because they belong to the same sorority, memberships, or groups.
  • Religious bias - shows when the hiring manager prefers one applicant over the other because they share the same faith or religion
  • Location bias - bypassing a candidate because they lived too far away from the job location

Avoid exclusionary language 

Your choice of words tells the applicant how inclusive your organization is towards certain underrepresented groups.

Candidates may feel they aren't good enough to apply because of the intimidating language or even feel uncertain of what the position entails.

Adjectives like 'energetic,' 'fast-paced,' or 'who can give 110%' indicate that your company is searching for a young employee who can work long hours.

It could also imply that your company isn't keen on accommodating those with families or that work-life balance isn't necessary.

Your job description should be inclusive of people from all backgrounds: old or young, single or married, or with or without children. 

Avoid using buzzwords

Using words like Ninja/Rockstar can cause bias towards a specific type of person or gender

During an online discussion exercise, Rutger students were asked to share their biggest concerns about job descriptions. More than 60% of the respondents listed vagueness as their top concern when reading job descriptions . 

Some perceived job descriptions as having too much detail, especially those filled with company jargon and buzzwords, dehumanizing the application process.

It's like the organization is trying to recruit a machine instead of a human employee with ideas and the ability to contribute to the culture. 

Most industries have jargons that are unique to what they do. And most professionals in those fields learn these terminologies and usage through work experience. 

However, job descriptions with jargon tend to exclude potential applicants, such as new graduates or those who reenter the workforce or switch careers. 

Examples of jargon, buzzwords, and cliches: ninja, guru, rockstar, game changer, self-starter, wizard, disruptor, disruptor, hacker

In addition, the work benefit ‘‘We offer a positive, fun, and stable work environment” is vague. What does it mean? ‘Fun’ can be interpreted in various ways: it could be ‘beer pong on Thursdays’ or ‘allowing flextime work schedule.’ 

Focus on actual skills and competencies 

Results-based job descriptions help your inclusive hiring efforts because they remove our unconscious biases while writing them.

Instead of posting bullet points of irrelevant qualifications, emphasize the position's daily responsibilities. Sometimes, having a lengthy list of job requirements can scare off candidates, creating the impression that working for your organization could be an ordeal.

In this example from  Data Center Technician , job description below,  ‘x years’ of experience was removed. Google highlights the actual skills like ‘experience in operating systems and networking protocols’ and ‘computer hardware troubleshooting.’ 

Qualifications:

  • Experience with operating systems and networking protocols 
  • Experience with computer hardware and server hardware or troubleshooting/diagnosing
  • Experience with Linus operating systems
  • Experience in project management and leadership

Consider the specific competencies or accomplishments that come with years of employment and paraphrase the requirements to highlight that. 

Clarity helps candidates understand what the role needs and eliminates doubts from both the applicant and the employer. 

Describe how you support disabled employees

Avoid language that might discourage qualified disabled candidates from applying and how you support disability in your workplace .

Focus not on the ‘what’ but on the ‘how’ a requirement needs to be accomplished. 

For instance, instead of saying ‘must be able to stand for the whole shift,’ replace it with ‘must be able to stay in a stationary position during shift.’ 

Or, in this example from ‘ FT-Receiver/Stocker-Day ’ job description, change ‘Minimally must be able to lift 25 pounds without assistance’ to ‘Move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds’.

Write in a conversational tone 

A job description written in a conversational tone will encourage more applications.

Write as if you are explaining the job to your friend. Be careful not to sound overly casual because this may lead to candidates doubting if your job is legitimate.

Use straightforward words that are not overly technical. Write in short sentences and paragraphs, with ample spacing to make it more readable, especially on a mobile device:

Aim between eight-grade to tenth-grade reading levels. Use Hemingway Editor App to ensure your job description is readable.

Include salary range

Most job ads don't include the salary range . 

However, when you have this information in your job description, you draw in underrepresented job seekers because your organization puts importance on pay equity.

In the minds of the job seekers, you are a trustworthy employer.

Moreover, pay transparency is especially beneficial when hiring women and people of color.

This level of openness indicates your organization's commitment to diversity. In a 2018 study by Glassdoor, salary remains the top factor in what job seekers and employees look for in job ads at 67% .

Include your company’s DE&I statement

Show your commitment to an inclusive workplace by including DEI statements in your job description.
