An intelligent, meticulously crafted drama about British soldiers in the trenches of World War I, “Journey’s End” is the latest cinematic rendition of a play by a war veteran, R.C. Sheriff, which premiered in England in 1928 with Laurence Olivier in a lead role. While the play was a huge hit on both sides of the Atlantic, and has proved an admirably durable theatrical staple (I saw the hit Broadway revival of 2007), one might wonder why it would be made into a movie in the present day.

An obvious one-word answer: “ Dunkirk .” Although they concern different wars, the two movies plumb the innate drama, tedium and terror of soldiers on foreign soil bracing for an onslaught by overwhelming enemy forces. Intimate and verbal, though, Saul Dibb ’s film provides a satisfying antithesis to Christopher Nolan ’s macrocosmic, hyper-sensory view of war: it gives close and sustained attention to a handful of soldiers facing both an implacable foe and their own mortality.

Since its debut, Sheriff’s play has been praised for its precise, flavorful realism and avoidance of cliches and rhetoric. Unlike many literary and cinematic treatments that would come later, it’s neither staunchly “patriotic” nor polemically “anti-war.” Leaving aside the war’s political causes (aside from one character’s statement that it should never have happened), it focuses squarely on the certain individuals and their ways of dealing with a situation of impending catastrophe.

Simon Reade ’s script for the film preserves the play’s virtues while opening its action outward in appropriate and judicious ways: While most of the drama remains in the bunkers of the British forces, when the soldiers leap out of the trenches onto the battlefield, we see that, too.

The tale takes place in the spring of 1918 near St. Quentin, France. The war has already dragged out for nearly four years, with millions killed; it will grind on for more than a half-year longer, snuffing out countless lives as it does. There is, in other words, nothing either strategically or historically significant about the episode we witness; it’s just another horror in a seemingly endless succession of them.

The film escorts us into the battle zone following fresh-faced teenaged Second Lieutenant Raleigh ( Asa Butterfield ), who could have done his service in a safer place but instead has gone to some trouble to get assigned to the command of Captain Stanhope ( Sam Claflin ). Before the war, Stanhope was a senior boy at Raleigh’s school and enamored of his sister; the three spent holidays happily wandering England’s countryside, the younger man recalls.

The early scene where Raleigh encounters Stanhope for the first time in the unit’s underground HQ is one of the film’s most memorable. Instead of the warm welcome he expected from his admired older pal, Raleigh finds a changed man. Though respected by his soldiers, Stanhope is a stiff and troubled officer and hardcore alcoholic. Naturally he doesn’t like Raleigh seeing him like this, and fears the reports he might send his sister.

Stanhope (the role that launched Olivier) is the pivotal figure in this drama. The other main character, gentlemanly, bookish Lieutenant Osborne ( Paul Bettany ), has joined the unit just recently but seems to have already formed a solid bond with Stanhope, who obviously needs his steadying, sane friendship.

A side note: The first film version of “Journey’s End” was directed in 1930 by James Whale , who would direct “Frankenstein” the following year and whose troubled psychic life as a gay WWI veteran is the subject of Bill Condon ’s “ Gods and Monsters .” While rights issues have kept Whale’s “Journey’s End” long out of circulation, a friend who’s seen it told me it’s rife with homosexual subtext. Apart perhaps from a poignant scene where a drunken Stanhope implores Osborne to tuck him into bed, that’s not the case here.

Instead, the drama describes the tensions, anxieties and sustaining camaraderie that unite these men and their fellows—including stalwart cook Mason ( Toby Jones ) and battle-hardened Trotter ( Stephen Graham ) and Hibbert ( Tom Sturridge )—as they begin a week when they’ve learned a massive German offensive is expected to begin. All know that they will be neither be evacuated nor reinforced. They are simply sacrificial lambs of the most basic strategic sort, their deaths meant only to momentarily slow the advancing enemy.

A crucial turn at the film’s dramatic apex comes when the Brits’ commanders send down an order that the unit mount a party of two officers and ten men to dash across no-man’s-land in the face of enemy fire, grab any German soldier they can, and bring him back in hopes of extracting intelligence about the upcoming attack. Raleigh and Osborne are the officers chosen for the detail. The mission is almost assuredly suicidal, just as it is inevitably futile, since it can do little or nothing to affect the impending slaughter.

Dibbs does a fine job bringing a nuanced, realistic visual style to this venerable tale of war’s cruel and colossal wastes, and his actors are all first-rate, with Bettany a special stand-out. But though it proves the timelessness of Sheriff’s drama, the film doesn’t make a particularly strong case for why, “Dunkirk” apart, it should be considered more-than-usually relevant today.

Unfortunately, as they pass away one by one, only mage Frieren survives as she ages differently compared to her comrades. But before Heiter died, he made sure that Frieren had someone to give her company and foisted a young adult named Fern onto her. The previous episode of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End was sedate compared to the series's action-heavy episodes. The latest installment saw the elven mage and Fern reunite with Stark.

Besides, the episode also captured the moments shared by the other participants in the First Class Mage Exam. Given how the episode ended, fans are now awaiting the release of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End episode 23.

As per the anime's official X handle ( @Frieren_PR ), Frieren: Beyond Journey's End episode 23 will be broadcast on February 16, 2024, at 11 pm JST, on Nippon Television in Japan.

Following its release, international viewers can watch the episode in English subs at the following times:

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End episode 22 recap

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End episode 22 begins with Genau announcing the results of the first exam, where only six groups cleared the test. He also revealed the date for the second exam.

Following the first exam's completion, Frieren and Fern return to the inn where Stark is staying. The mage apprentice frowns at the red-haired warrior for staying up late at night and sleeping in the evening.

As such, to cheer her up, the elven mage decides to go to a restaurant where she once grabbed lunch with the hero party. Elsewhere, Richter is seen helping a woman with a magic item.

Outside the shop, he meets Denken and Laufen, his ex-party members. The Imperial mage invites Richter to lunch, which he hesitantly accepts. At some other place, Land gets greeted by Ubel, who wants to know him better.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Episode 22 then shows the mages arriving at the same restaurant. Denken witnesses Frieren, against whom he lost in the first test. However, being a veteran mage, he knows that everyone should enjoy their food.

Besides Denken's and Frieren's group, Ubel and Land also grab a seat at the restaurant. As for the elven mage, a single bite of the sumptuous dish makes her reminisce about the time when she first tasted the restaurant's food with Himmel and others.

In the next segment of the episode , Frieren asks Stark to pacify an angry Fern. Unable to see any way out, the red-haired warrior suggests getting something for her.

On their way, the trio meets Lawine and Kanne, who greet the elven mage. At the same time, Wirbel arrives and takes Stark away for a mission. Following this, the episode shows the elven mage, Fern, Lawine, and Kanne at a restaurant.

The mage duo thanks Frieren for helping them win the first round and gives her a gift. However, they know that they will be pitted against each other for the next exams. At that moment, a messenger bird arrives with the news about the second round.

It is revealed that Sense will be the second exam's proctor, under whom no one has passed any exam on previous occasions. The episode ends with a scene featuring Genau and Sense, where the former tells the enigmatic woman that she has set a cruel exam.

What to expect in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End episode 23

Considering the latest installment adapted chapters 46 and 47 from Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe's manga , Frieren: Beyond Journey's End episode 23 will likely cover the next two chapters.

In other words, the next episode will commence the second round of the First Class Mage Exam. Since Sense, a pacifist mage is the exam's proctor, there's no doubt that the second round will be challenging.

Keep up with more anime news and manga updates as 2024 continues.

Why do you need a VPN to watch Frieren on Netflix?

The short answer is due to copyrights and content licensing laws. Frieren: Beyond the Journey’s End is streaming on Crunchyroll in the USA, UK, Canada, and a number of other countries. This is the reason Netflix can’t show the title for their American, British, and Canadian subscribers.

However, you can employ a VPN to change your IP address and access the Japanese Netflix library from the USA to watch Frieren on Netflix.

We have tested ExpressVPN and NordVPN to access the Japanese Netflix library, and both worked perfectly. We would pick ExpressVPN out of the two due to its highly optimized servers in Japan.

Why is ExpressVPN a good choice to watch Frieren on Netflix?

Our experience with ExpressVPN for accessing various Netflix libraries, including watching movies and TV shows not available in our region, has been consistently successful. Esteemed by multiple publishers and VPN review platforms, it holds a top position in VPN rankings.

Specifically, we used ExpressVPN’s Japanese servers to access Japanese Netflix from the USA and successfully streamed Frieren on our first try. Additionally, we watched anime series such as Hajime No Ippo: Rising , Naruto Shippuden , and The Apothecary Diaries .

With over 3000 servers across 105 countries, ExpressVPN excels in bypassing geo-restrictions, enabling easy region switching on Netflix with just a click. Currently, ExpressVPN offers a subscription at $6.67/month, backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee. Their 12+3 month special deal provides an extra three months of free VPN service. A single subscription covers up to eight devices and includes round-the-clock customer support. These attributes make ExpressVPN an excellent option for streaming Frieren on Netflix from any country.

Watching Frieren on Netflix with NordVPN

NordVPN stands out as a top alternative to ExpressVPN, offering affordability and high performance. It’s been hailed as the best VPN of 2024 by notable review sites such as Cybernews and Comparitech.

To evaluate these accolades, we tested NordVPN’s Thai server for its capability to access the Japanese Netflix library. The test was a success, enabling us to stream the first few episodes of Frieren on Netflix in the USA.

While NordVPN’s download speed of 72Mbps on a 100Mbps connection was slightly lower than ExpressVPN’s, it proved sufficient for HD quality streaming of movies and TV shows, including titles like Assassination Classroom , How to Train Your Dragon 2 , and Sing 2.

A standout feature of NordVPN is NordLynx, which ensures smooth and secure streaming. Additionally, its 256-bit end-to-end encryption, along with Double VPN and Mesh Net features, provide robust online security.

NordVPN offers compatible applications for a range of devices, including PC, Linux, Mac, and mobile, and its Smart TV app works flawlessly for watching Frieren on Netflix in the UK. A single subscription can be used on more than six devices.

Priced at about $3.99/month, NordVPN also comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Their 2-year deal includes 3 free months of VPN service. The 24/7 chat support and a 65% discount further enhance NordVPN’s appeal as a viable option for watching Frieren on Netflix from anywhere.

Frieren: Beyond the Journey’s End trailer

What is the story of Frieren: Beyond the Journey’s End

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End begins at the end of a typical fantasy adventure, where heroes celebrate their victory over the Demon King. The story focuses on Frieren, an elf with a long lifespan, who struggles with the fleeting nature of time, particularly as her human companions age and pass away while she remains largely unchanged.

The series, adapted from Kanehito Yamada’s manga, follows Frieren’s realization of how quickly she loses time with her friends. It explores her perspective on time passing, as decades seem like mere moments to her. The story is both captivating and unsettling in its portrayal of time’s swift passage.

Despite its somber themes, the show maintains a light tone, mixing melancholy with traditional fantasy elements. Frieren, who is initially reserved and distant, slowly reveals more emotion as she faces the mortality of her friends. She embarks on a new journey with a young companion, Fern, taking a more leisurely and reflective approach to life.

The series is visually striking, featuring lush environments and a wistful orchestral score. It balances moments of action with a contemplative atmosphere, focusing on Frieren’s evolving understanding of the world and her place in it. The show hints at a hopeful future for Frieren, despite the underlying sadness of her situation, and explores her quirky personality and habits.

7 new movies and TV shows to stream on Netflix, Prime Video, Max, and more this weekend (April 12)

Catch Fallout, The Sympathizer, Franklin, and more

Fallout on Prime Video

Notwithstanding the total solar eclipse , things are beginning to brighten up outside, but unless you’re reading this from a beach house in California, it’s still not warm enough to spend your weekends totally detached from the TV.

Thank goodness, then, for streaming services, who are this week offering up a particularly exciting slate of new movies and TV shows to enjoy. Leading the charge is Fallout on Prime Video , Amazon ’s serialized adaptation of the hugely popular post-apocalyptic video game series, while The Sympathizer and Franklin begin streaming on Max and Apple TV Plus , respectively.

Below, we've rounded up the seven biggest new movies and TV shows to stream on Netflix , Prime Video, Max, and more this weekend.

Fallout (Prime Video)

It’s not an exaggeration to say we’re living through a golden age of video game adaptations, and Amazon will be hoping its newest game-to-screen series, Fallout , can emulate the success of recent projects like The Last of Us TV show .

Adapted from the post-apocalyptic video game franchise of the same name (by Westworld writing duo Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, no less), this eight-part, 1950s-style series centers on a young woman’s journey across a nuclear war-ravaged Los Angeles. Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Kyle MacLachlan and Walton Goggins lead the cast.

In our Fallout season 1 review , we described the show as “an absolute blast” and one of the best Prime Video shows ever made, so existing Fallout fans need not fear for this project’s quality. For further insight into the series’ product, check out our interviews with the Fallout cast and Nolan himself .

Now available to stream on Prime Video.

The Sympathizer (Max)

Fresh from his Oscar-winning turn in Oppenheimer , Robert Downey Jr. plays multiple characters in A24’s Park Chan-wook-directed spy thriller The Sympathizer .

This seven-part adaptation of the Pulitzer-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen follows a Vietnamese communist spy (Hoa Xuande) who continues to secretly gather intelligence for the Viet Cong while exiled in the United States after the Vietnam War. Downey Jr. stars in various antagonist roles.

The first episode of The Sympathizer – which critics have described as “a tour de force” adaptation” – is available to stream on Max in the US from Sunday and on Sky in the UK from Monday. The show’s remaining six installments are due to arrive weekly every Sunday.

Available to stream on Max in the US from Sunday and on Sky in the UK from Monday.

Franklin (Apple TV Plus)

Joining Napoleon in the Apple TV Plus biopic library this weekend is Franklin , a new historical miniseries charting the exploits of famed polymath Benjamin Franklin.

Set towards the end of Franklin’s decades-spanning career, this eight-episode show centers on the diplomat’s engineering the Franco-American alliance of 1778. Michael Douglas stars in the title role alongside Noah Jupe, Daniel Mays and Ludivine Sagnier.

Critics have praised Douglas’ performance as “absolutely compelling,” which suggests Franklin could be one of the best Apple TV Plus shows of the year so far. The series’ first three episodes are available to stream now, with the remaining five due to land weekly every Friday.

Now available to stream on Apple TV Plus.

Good Times (Netflix)

Norman Lear's 1970s CBS sitcom Good Times gets the animated treatment on Netflix this weekend.

Featuring the voices of Jay Pharoah, Yvette Nicole Brown, Marsai Martin, JB Smoove and Gerald Anthony Johnson, this adult animated comedy series – produced by the late Lear himself alongside Seth MacFarlane and Stephen Curry – centers on the misadventures of a family living in the Chicago projects.

Suffice to say, Good Times has left preview audiences divided, but critics have said that this animated sequel “improves when it steps out from Normal Lear’s shadow.”

Now available to stream on Netflix.

Baby Reindeer (Netflix)

British comedian Richard Gadd adapts his award-winning, partly autobiographical play Baby Reindeer into a new Netflix series this weekend.

Based on Gadd’s own experience with a stalker, this new drama (from the makers of The End of the F***ing World ) follows a struggling comedian (played by Gadd himself) who becomes an object of obsession for a vulnerable woman (Jessica Gunning).

Critics have described Baby Reindeer as “a tense, creepily filmed series that will stay with you for a long time to come,” so this could be one of the best Netflix shows of the year.

What Jennifer Did (Netflix)

This first of this week’s two documentary picks is What Jennifer Did on Netflix.

This feature-length investigation takes a microscope to the 2010 case of Jennifer Pan, a young Vietnamese-Canadian girl who was inexplicably left as the sole witness when armed intruders broke into her home and killed her parents.

If you don’t already know how this shocking case unfolded, we’ll refrain from disclosing spoilers here, but judging by its trailer, What Jennifer Did has the makings of being one of the best Netflix documentaries for some time.

Brandy Hellville & The Cult of Fast Fashion (Max)

If you enjoyed Netflix’s White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch , HBO has a new fashion-focused exposé documentary for you.

Brandy Hellville & The Cult of Fast Fashion examines the toxic origins and culture behind the titular teen clothing brand, which has faced accusations of racism and misogyny by former employees, executives and fashion insiders.

Now available to stream on Max.

'A Journey' Review: Netflix's Filipino film leaves you teary-eyed with profound emotions

MANILA, PHILIPPINES: 'A Journey', now streaming on Netflix , takes viewers on a poignant two-hour exploration of profound emotions.

It revolves around a young woman, Shane, whose cancer returns for the second time and she chooses to opt out of undergoing chemotherapy again.

Instead, she convinces her husband, Bryan, to help her check off the adventures on her bucket list. Accompanied by their close friend, Kristoff, the trio sets off on an unforgettable adventure to Tasmania.

Netflix's 'A Journey' is an emotional one

A still from 'A Journey' (@netflix)

The film delivers a deeply emotional experience, evoking tears as it portrays Shane and Bryan's heartfelt journey through the diagnosis of the deadly disease.

Despite the expected emotional moments, the film also celebrates love and enduring friendships.

It's central philosophy- "survival is not the same as living" is beautiful portrayed, emphasizing the idea that one never knows what may happen tomorrow.

There have been plenty of films made in the past with similar themes, but the portrayal of deep, sentimental human emotions can never become worn out in cinema. In fact, they are the heart of cinema, depicted across all genres.

'A Journey' doesn't bore you with monotony

Paolo Contis, Patrick Garcia and Kaye Abad in 'A Journey' (@netflix)

The plot of the film is quite familiar and has been depicted in several films across continents.

Fortunately, RC Delos Reyes does a brilliant job of not lingering on emotional moments but maintains a steady pace, ensuring the audience remains engaged and invested in the story.

The close, fun relationship shared between the trio provides a heartfelt relief from the heavily loaded emotions of pain and grief.

Paolo Contis, Patrick Garcia and Kaye Abad share a wholesome chemistry and are quite convincing in their respective parts.

'A Journey' makes a worthwhile watch for a relaxed weekend, alone or with loved ones. Just be prepared with tissues handy for this touching ride.

The Best New Netflix Series of 2024 (So Far)

The new show from the creators of Game of Thrones tops the list as we hit the quarter point of the year.

Kasey Moore What's on Netflix Avatar

It’s been a strong start to the year for Netflix, and below, we’ll explore our favorite new series additions of the year so far. We’ll highlight six of the best new series added between January and April 2024, with plans to continue updating this list throughout the year.

This list won’t include any of the new licensed shows that have hit Netflix in the United States or worldwide. In the US alone, Netflix has added north of 2,000 episodes of licensed TV so far this year, and that trend is set to continue. We’ll notably miss out on documentary and reality series from this list (keep an eye on that very soon) and stick solely to English-language scripted series.

Finally, if you want more of the best of 2024 lists so far, check out our picks of the best new movies of the year and the best new K-dramas . For more on what’s coming to Netflix throughout 2024, check  out our release schedule guide .

Masters of the Universe: Revolution

Masters Of The Universe Revolution

Picture: Netflix

Although viewership has dropped on Masters of the Universe: Revolution from the height of popularity (or perhaps just pure intrigue) of Revelation, the show has undoubtedly benefited from not being in the all-destroying eye of the Sauron-like culture wars.

Featuring some excellent voice performances, the 5 episodes that were released in January were tight and action-packed while being an absolute joy to watch.

It’s unclear at the moment whether more Masters of the Universe are on the way (an interview we conducted earlier this year hinted at this), but we’re keeping our fingers and toes crossed.

The Tourist Season 2

The Tourist Season 2 Best New Series Of 2024

Picture: BBC / Netflix

Before diving into this one – it’s important to note that The Tourist is only a Netflix Original title in a few select regions, including the US and Latin American regions, with the show locked to other streamers or broadcasters elsewhere. In the UK where I’m from, for example, it’s a BBC show and only available on the iPlayer for the moment.

Despite being a surprise pickup from Max, The Tourist’s second season was an excellent addition to Netflix and builds excellently upon the first season.

In the second season of the show, led by Jamie Dornan, Elliot and his girlfriend Helen journey to Ireland to uncover details about Elliot’s identity, but they instead confront the perilous repercussions of his previous actions.

While arguably not quite as strong as the first season, season 2 is still an excellent twisty adventure with lots of standout performances.

Fool Me Once

fool me once netflix series january 1st 2024

We’ll begin with one of three (!) British shows that will feature on this list and was the first major Netflix series released in 2024. We’re referring to the eighth Harlan Coben adaptation and the fourth British one in the form of Fool Me Once .

Featuring the signature sharp writing you’d expect from a Coben adaptation, the script is brought to life by Michelle Keegan (who we’re sure many international audiences weren’t familiar with, to begin with), who leads the ensemble cast with other strong performances being put in by Netflix-regular Richard Armitage, Adeel Akhtar, and Joanna Lumley.

The show was equally loved by critics and presumably audiences, given that it currently ranks among Netflix’s all-time biggest hits . Talk about starting the year off strong!

Baby Reindeer

Baby Reindeer Best Of 2024 Series

I’m taking a giant L on this one! When I first saw Baby Reindeer at Next on Netflix UK , I came away with a note in my notepad reading “WTF,” as the initial trailer gave me weird vibes with the trailer, in my opinion, ultimately struggling to convey the message of what this comedy was about. I was truly left scratching my head about how this would work in practice.

Having now watched the show, I was utterly wrong with the show not taking the piss out of the individual but rather delivering a complex comedy that’s full of deep questions and heart.

Based on a true story previously the subject of a comedy routine, Baby Reindeer tells the story of Richard Gadd’s chance encounter and how offering a cup of tea essentially derailed his life for the next few years.

The Gentlemen

The Gentlemen Netflix Cover Photo

Guy Ritchie has undergone many phases as a creator, writer, and director throughout his career with my first introduction being the timeless movie, Snatch . To me, The Gentlemen is an amalgamation of all his prior works in a succinct and very bingeable package, resulting in one of the best British shows ever made for Netflix.

Complete with the director’s signature comedy and well-written villains, the series takes all the best elements of the 2019 movie and builds upon them with a well-cast ensemble of colorful characters, each as distinguished as the last. It’s a breeze to get started with and fulfilling to get right through to the end.

The show has proved extremely popular, still topping the Netflix UK charts well over a month after its initial debut. Hopefully, there’s more to come!

3 Body Problem

3 Body Problem Best New Show Of 2024

3 Body Problem. (L to R) John Bradley as Jack Rooney, Jess Hong as Jin Cheng in episode 103 of 3 Body Problem. Cr. Ed Miller/Netflix © 2024

To call 3 Body Problem a big swing is an understatement. As one of the most expensive shows Netflix has ever assembled, it was a risky endeavor, and I believe it has paid off beautifully.

Now, I won’t say that the series is entirely perfect. Following the big reveal at the end of episode 5, the show does lose its magic ever so slightly. Still, for those first few episodes where David Benioff and D.B Weiss expertly craft a brand new world full of promise and allure (like they did with Game of Thrones ), the results are magical, and it was a show I just couldn’t put down.

If we are lucky, we will be able to include the fact that the show has been given a season 2 renewal order by the time we need to update this article midway through the year.

That’s our picks of the best new series of the year so far—what are yours? Let us know in the comments below.
