Madonna Proves She's Still Here and Kicking, If Not High-Kicking, at Chase Center 'Celebration Tour' Stop

"Aging is a sin,” Madonna says in a recorded video montage that plays toward the end of her Celebration Tour setlist. "I think the most controversial thing I've ever done is stick around."

You may have heard the venerable, the influential, the tireless and great Madonna say something similar before. And there is no question that Madonna stands alone. She is peerless, particularly in the echelon of stardom that she essentially invented — alongside, arguably, Michael Jackson, to whom she also pays awkward tribute in the show, but I'll get to that in a minute.

We have yet to see, at least in American culture, anyone of her icon status and strata of fame get to the age of 65 and keep going.

You can argue that Cher, at 77, comes close, but for all her popularity and glamour and gay-icon status, Cher was never Madonna. And Cher is not selling out arenas doing a greatest hits tour at 65 — albeit smaller-sized arenas than Beyonce and Taylor Swift these days.

Beyonce and Taylor, if they're lucky, will reach this stage in a couple decades and maybe they, too, will make questionable cosmetic surgery choices and still keep touring.

But for now, there is only Madonna, defying society's norms and assumptions, having recovered from last summer's health scare . And she proved on Tuesday night that she is every bit the icon and commander of a stage that she always was — save for a couple flubs and stumbles, and some pretty obvious stiffness, especially in heels. She's enjoying perhaps a well-earned rest from being a workhorse dancer and singer, and unlike her tours of 15 or 20 years back, she doesn't try to keep up with all the choreo, generally remaining at the center of flurries of high kicks and spinning shirtless men to distract the eye.

Ever the expert curator and hirer of talent, Madonna has brought in the excellent Bob the Drag Queen to serve as emcee of sorts, with Bob woven in to multiple numbers, adding energy and wit, and serving the "Pray Tell" role calling out scores — all "Tens across the board!" naturally — during a terrific "Vogue" tribute to the ballroom scene that inspired the song.

madonna tour san francisco

There was something meta in that number as well, with Beyonce's recent sampling/cover of "Vogue," featured in a remix "Break My Soul," dappled into the number.

The show is full of spectacle and fantastic dancing, as well as the surprise guests of three of Madonna's younger children — David Banda, playing guitar; Mercy James, who just turned 18, playing classical piano and then accompanying her mother on a quiet version of the song "Bad Girl"; and one of the twins, Estere, vogue-ing and duck-walking with the best of them during Vogue .

Madonna is hoisted twice into a floating box that glides high above the stage through the arena — movingly, she sings "Live to Tell" from there as images of artists and others who died during the AIDS epidemic are flashed on multiple projection screens.

And "Like a Prayer," which utilizes a Jesus carousel of sorts — an actual spinning carousel adorned with crosses and filled with male dancers "crucified" in loin cloths — that Madonna sings from the top of, is a gloriously blasphemous throwback to the great Madonna numbers of yore, skewering Catholic iconography.

The final showstopper comes with a wittily conceived parade of Madonnas, dancers in various Madonna drag from every stage of her career — Truth or Dare , A League of Their Own , "Justify My Love," "Material Girl," the "Rain" video, they're all there. In that crowd of avatars, Madonna seems a bit overshadowed by her own numerous images though, and her own costume, a blue veil, doesn't make a ton of sense.

madonna tour san francisco

While there is satisfaction in seeing Madonna still going at it, and delivering the hits one after another — which at times, on other tours, she was reluctant to do when she had new music to promote — it's hard to call this a perfect triumph.

During her only real moment of banter — which never, with her, feels unscripted — in the last third of the show, Madonna did some hedging about her own performance, saying, "I do my best," and things like, "I look like trash, right?", fishing for fans to tell her "No, not at all."

She of course doesn't look like trash, but there was a small stumble early on about which she is likely hard on herself, during "Into the Groove." And even the final second of the show was marred by a flub — as Madonna was lowered by a lift beneath the stage, she called out, "Goodnight, Sacramento! — er — I mean, goodnight, San Francisco! Ugh I knew I was going to do that."

She had just played Sacramento over the weekend. Give her a break!

But just back to the Michael Jackson thing. At nearly the close of the show, a montage gets introduced while two stand-ins for Madonna and "Thriller"-era Michael Jackson dance as shadows behind a screen. The montage shows multiple images of Madonna and Michael, at the height of their respective fame moments, being friends and appearing together at a couple of events. This seems intended to remind anyone in the audience under the age of 35 just how famous she was at one time, but it also seems like it's just Madonna's sincere — if self-serving? — tribute to her lost friend, who died fifteen years ago.

It doesn't really fit neatly in the show and its purpose is pretty ambiguous — and is Madonna looking to set aside all the posthumous disgrace that has come to Jackson's story to present this 15-year-later homage in the middle of her greatest-hits set?

It was a bit jarring, and didn't exactly set us up for the fun of the final numbers. But, like a number of bits from the Madame X tour , it felt like something odd that Madonna herself must have insisted on including and no one argued with her.

Maybe that's just the privilege that comes along with being the last one standing. And while committing the sin of aging, perhaps she doesn't want to be accused of the sin of forgetting who she's outlasted.

'Madonna: The Celebration Tour' plays a second night at the Chase Center tonight, Feb. 28. Showtime is listed 8:30 pm but she goes on a little after 10.

Breaking News

Music | tech layoffs jolt bay area economy with hundreds of new job cuts, music | review: madonna does ‘my best’ in spectacular, frustrating sf show.

Madonna (at right) is joined by actor Julia Garner (playing a younger version of the icon) on stage during her concert Celebration Tour performance at Chase Center in San Francisco Tuesday night. Garner at one point was reportedly slated to portray Madonna in a film biography.

Nearly two hours into her epic Celebration Tour performance Tuesday night in San Francisco, Madonna briefly slowed up the show’s relentless, highly choreographed pace and shared some brief words with her audience.

“Is my hair a mess? Do I look like trash, right?” asked the legendary singer and pop culture icon. At this point, her famous blond hair was bound in school-girl braids. “You can’t always look good when you’re working hard, right?”

“I do my best. I do my best,” she said to the Chase Center crowd.

At Madonna’s behest, the audience held up the lights in their phones to create that starry-night effect so beloved by arena performers. “Remember the light you shine outside of you is also inside of you,” Madonna told her many adoring fans, while they joined her in singing, “Don’t go for second best, baby, Put your love to the test.”

It was perhaps the heartfelt, authentic moment in the 2½-hour concert, which for  the most part was exhilarating but could also be occasionally frustrating and messy, as if the show, or the star herself, were sometimes off her game.

It could be that Madonna was acknowledging that even she can’t always be perfect when she said, “I do my best. I do my best.”

Maybe that line was also a way for the 65-year-old to summarize a life and career marked by resilience and a determination to entertain, engage, push boundaries, make art. The Celebration Tour is Madonna’s first road show devoted to a career retrospective rather than on promoting a new album. That means the seven-part set list is populated with versions of “Into the Groove,” “Holiday,” “Vogue,” “Like a Virgin,” “La Isla Bonita,” and “Nothing Really Matters.”

This retrospective aspect of the show clearly pleased many in the crowd at Chase Center. It got them up and dancing and they didn’t seem to mind her usual hour-and-a-half-late start. These fans appeared to be her contemporaries and probably witnessed, first hand, her ascent to global stardom. A fair number also were women and gay men, who perhaps believe they benefited from Madonna’s many artistic campaigns on behalf of gender and sexuality equality.

But as a retrospective for an artist who is nearing the age to collect her full Social Security benefits (as if multimillionaire Madonna would need them), they also had to feel that the show offered plenty of reminders of the passage of time and of her mortality – and of their own.

For one thing, Madonna is no longer the most famous and influential music artist in the world – having been most recently supplanted by Taylor Swift and Beyonce. Meanwhile, her ability to shock has waned, though that doesn’t mean she didn’t still try to provoke and titillate Tuesday night  — featuring topless female dancers in some dance numbers, one of whom she French kisses a la Britney Spears at the 2003 VMAs. For “Justify My Love,” she also performed with dancers in flesh-colored tights in what’s supposed to evoke an orgy, though this number didn’t come off as sexy as it could have been.

Madonna fares better when she upends religious iconography in the show’s most spectacular number, “Like a Prayer.” She sings the anthemic work on a dramatic spinning carousel that held shirtless dancers striking poses that at times mimicked Christ’s crucifixion

It’s hard to deny that Madonna’s supposedly inexhaustible body shows that she’s a stage veteran who has pushed herself to physical extremes for decades. Sure, she looked amazing in the multiple corsets she donned and performed in almost non-stop for 2½ hours. There also were moments when she was able to skip down the runway, like her ‘80s club kid self.

But in the opening “Into the Groove,” she almost took a tumble over one of her dancers after completing a spin. At other times, she appeared to be slightly behind the beat. Much of the choreography appeared to be built around giving Madonna a break from doing the more athletic, intricate moves she used to be on board for.

Her dancers carried that weight. Madonna also had dancers dress up to perform as iconic younger versions of herself. This tactic was used in full force in the climactic number, “Bitch, I’m Madonna,” when the stage is populated by “Material Girl” and “Blonde Ambition”  Madonnas, and even a Madonna from her film role in “A League of their Own.” “Ozark” star Julia Garner, who reportedly was slated to play Madonna in a long-delayed film biography, also came on stage to portray one of these younger Madonnas versions of the singer in “Vogue.”

When Madonna kicked off the North American leg of her tour in Brooklyn in December, she acknowledged her close call with fate last July, when she contracted a bacterial infection that put her in the ICU and forced her to postpone her tour.

In some ways, the Celebration Tour’s name seems to underline the fact that she’s still here — unlike some of her peers. She devotes several songs and visuals to people who have died. There’s her mother, of course, whom she lost when she was 5. There’s also Prince, as well as the vast community of artists decimated by the AIDS epidemic. Some of these artists nurtured her when she was an ambitious young dancer and musician starting out in New York City in the early 1980s. They and so many others are represented by black-and-white images that flash on screen and grow into the hundreds and even the thousands.

Towards the end of the show, Madonna also offered a curious tribute to Michael Jackson, who died in 2009.  It may have been her way of circling the show back to her musical roots in the early 1980s when both she and Jackson ruled the pop culture universe, and when she reminds us they were friends in a montage of images of them together.

But it’s one of the more frustrating moments in the show. The number features a screen showing shadow images of dancers emulating Jackson and Madonna, while Jackson’s “Billie Jean” and “Smooth Criminal” plays along with Madonna’s “Like a Virgin.” However, it’s a recorded version of “Like a Virgin,” which was a bit of a letdown. Of course. This devoted crowd would likely have preferred to see Madonna drop the gimmickry to perform one of her biggest hits in person.

Act 1 “Nothing Really Matters” “Everybody” “Into the Groove” “Burning Up” “Open Your Heart” “Holiday”

“The Ritual” “Like a Prayer”

“Erotica” “Justify My Love” “Hung Up” “Bad Girl”

“Vogue” “Human Nature” “Crazy for You”

“Die Another Day” “Don’t Tell Me” “Mother and Father” “Express Yourself” “La Isla Bonita” “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina”

“Bedtime Story” “Ray of Light” “Take a Bow”

“Bitch I’m Madonna” “Celebration”

Courtney Love says Taylor Swift is ‘not important,’ slams Beyoncé and Lana Del Rey

D espite her long-standing advocacy for women in rock music,  Courtney Love holds little admiration for today’s most influential female artists, including Taylor Swift , Lana Del Rey and Beyoncé .

Love, a San Francisco native and founder of the grunge band Hole, was candid about her views on the current crop of pop stars in a recent interview with the Evening Standard .

“Taylor is not important,” she emphasized. “She might be a safe space for girls, and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist.”

For Love, that is a pretty low bar as she makes clear she doesn’t hold Madonna in high regard, despite the pop star’s recent tour celebrating her 40-year career following a near-fatal bacterial infection.

“I don’t like her and she doesn’t like me,” Love said. “I loved Desperately Seeking Susan, but for the city of New York as much as her.”

This year’s  Coachella headliner Del Rey has also fallen out of favor with Love.

“I haven’t liked Lana since she covered a John Denver song, and I think she should really take seven years off,” Love said. “Up until ‘Take Me Home Country Roads’ I thought she was great. When I was recording my new album, I had to stop listening to her as she was influencing me too much.”

Even Beyoncé , who recently gained acclaim for her foray into country music with “Cowboy Carter,” fails to impress the rock singer.

“I like the idea of Beyoncé doing a country record because it’s about Black women going into spaces where previously only white women have been allowed, not that I like it much,” she said. “As a concept, I love it. I just don’t like her music.”

Interestingly, the interview coincides with the launch of Love’s new eight-part radio series, “ Courtney Love’s Women ,” airing on BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Sounds, intended to celebrate women in music. Sharing personal stories, Love reflects on her tumultuous journey and life with her husband Kurt Cobain of Nirvana before he died in 1994.

But Love, who moved to London in 2019, does praise some musicians, including Stevie Nicks , Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Patti Smith , PJ Harvey, Debbie Harry, Julie London and Joni Mitchell .

“It’s great that there are so many successful women in the music industry, but lots of them are becoming a cliché,” she said. “Now, every successful woman is cloned, so there is just too much music. They’re all the same. If you play something on Spotify, you get bombarded with a lot of stuff that’s exactly the same.”

Love is currently putting the finishing touches on her memoir, “The Girl With the Most Cake,” and reportedly wrapping up her long-awaited solo album.

Charli XCX and Troye Sivan are about to transform arenas across North America into raves from "1999."

The British hyperpop phenom, 31, and the Aussie pop star, 28, announced on Wednesday, April 17 that they're going on a joint headlining tour in 2024 titled Charli XCX & Troye Sivan present: Sweat. The run of 21 shows is a highly anticipated effort among fans of the two stars, who have long been friends and frequent collaborators.

The hitmakers — who collaborated on "1999" and "2099" off the 2019 album Charli — will play a handful arenas across the U.S. and Canada in the fall. The "Von Dutch" singer and the "Rush" singer will hit the road together in mid-September, kicking off Sweat in Detroit on Sept. 14.

Harley Weir

The superstars will play throughout September and into October, eventually wrapping up on Oct. 23 in Seattle. They'll make stops at iconic venues like New York City's Madison Square Garden and Los Angeles' Kia Forum, in addition to major cities like Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and others.

Charli XCX and Sivan will also bringing along a special opening act: the British alt-hip-hop/electronic star Shygirl .

Stuart Winecoff

According to a press release, fans can expect the "Vroom Vroom" artist and the "One of Your Girls" singer to turn "venues into raves."

Their co-headlining concerts are set to feature "exhilarating performances, stunning visuals, and infectious beats," and act as "a testament to their commitment to inclusivity and diversity within the music industry," per the release.

Both of the avant-pop musicians shared a tour teaser on Instagram . The brief clip features flashing imagery of the two singers, along with minimalist, brightly-colored posters with the tour dates that appear to be inspired by rave flyers.

Sweat comes nearly one year after Sivan released his acclaimed, third studio album Something to Give Each Other in October 2023. The project's lead single, " Rush ," garnered to nominations for best pop dance recording at best dance video at the 2024 Grammys .

The upcoming string of live dates will also come on the heels of the release of Charli XCX's new album Brat , which is due out on Friday, June 7.

The Pop 2 artist kicked off the album release cycle of her follow up to 2022's Crash in late February when she dropped "Von Dutch." Since then, she's released a remix of the track featuring Addison Rae and her longtime producer A.G. Cook, as well as the singles "Club classics" and "B2b."

Live Nation

Sweat won't be the only time Charli XCX is hitting the road this year. In addition to a handful of festival dates this spring and summer, she'll also be playing a short stint of headlining gigs in support of the release of Brat in N.Y.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, Mexico City and São Paulo in June.

Once the singer-songwriter's dates with Sivan wrap, she'll also embark on an arena tour of the U.K. in late November and early December to close out 2024.

Tickets to Sweat kick off with a presale. Fans are able to register for the advanced ticket sale now until Thursday, April 25 at sweat-tour.com . The artist presale will then kick off on Thursday, April 25 at 10 a.m. local time.

The general ticket sale will follow on Friday, April 26 at 10 a.m. local time on LiveNation.com.
