Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

Does NRMA travel insurance have COVID-19 cover?

Yes, NRMA travel insurance includes some coverage for COVID-19, but only in relation to policy benefits that cover overseas medical expenses (including emergency evacuation or repatriation) and additional expenses.

The amount of money that your policy covers you for when it comes to Covid-related claims depends on your level of cover, where the Comprehensive plan offers a higher payout than the Essentials or Domestic plans.

There are also some exclusions to COVID-19 coverage that you need to be aware of, such as:

Some COVID-19 benefits only apply to travel in Australia and New Zealand

The policy won’t cover you when you travel to a destination against Smartraveller’s ‘Do not travel’ advice

There is no cover for border closures or mandatory quarantine

Some benefits won’t apply when you’re travelling on a multi-night cruise

You will likely need to pay a ‘special excess’ in addition to the standard excess rate when making a travel insurance claim for Covid-related incidents.

For more information, including the types of claims eligible for cover and any exclusions, have a look at the NRMA travel insurance PDS.

What optional extras can I add to my NRMA travel insurance policy?

If you’re planning on going skiing or sailing into the horizon on a cruise holiday, then you may need to look into the optional extras that NRMA offers, as some types of activities won’t be covered by their standard policies.

These optional extras typically incur an extra premium, on top of what your base policy costs.

The optional extras you can purchase include:

Snow travel insurance

Cruise travel insurance

Moped/motorcycle riding cover

Pre-existing medical conditions

Increased item luggage limits.

For details about what each of these optional extras includes and excludes, check out the NRMA travel insurance PDS.

Are pre-existing medical conditions covered under NRMA travel insurance?

There are a range of pre-existing medical conditions that are automatically covered under an NRMA travel insurance policy, but you’ll still need to seek approval for coverage. That means you’ll need to notify NRMA of any medical conditions you have so that they feature on your certificate of insurance.

Some conditions that aren’t automatically covered will need to be assessed by NRMA before approval for coverage is granted.

You may need to pay an extra premium on top of the base policy cost in order for your pre-existing condition to be covered.

What do I do if there’s an emergency during my trip?

For 24-hour emergency assistance while you’re on your trip you can call:

New Zealand: 0800 033 533

UK: 0800 656 9946

USA: 1855 812 4898

Canada: 1855 812 4898

Other countries: + 61 2 8907 5584

If you have general questions, call the NRMA enquiries line on 1300 305 790.

How do I make a claim with NRMA travel insurance?

To make a travel insurance claim with NRMA, head over to their travel insurance website and follow the links to their online claims portal.

You’ll need to have documents that support your claim ready to go, like a police report if you’ve been a victim of theft.

NRMA aims to process your claim within 10 working days.

Is it possible to cancel my NRMA travel insurance policy?

If you need to cancel your NRMA travel insurance policy, there’s a 21-day cooling-off period in which you may be eligible for a full refund.

After the 21 days is up, however, you may only be eligible for a partial refund of your premium for the unexpired period of cover.

If you have already started your journey, you will not be eligible for a refund of your premium at all.

To cancel your cover, call 1300 135 640 or email [email protected] .

These are some of the main insured events that NRMA will cover. These benefits apply across all international policies.

  • Overseas medical treatment
  • Lost, damaged or stolen property
  • Trip cancellation or amendment
  • Additional accommodation and transport
  • Delayed luggage allowance
  • Rental car insurance excess
  • Emergency dental costs
  • Kidnap and hijack
  • Personal liability
  • Accidental death

NRMA also offers opportunities to tailor your cover to suit your needs. It has a specific Cruise Cover option but otherwise you just have to request a quote for your other needs.

  • Cruise cover. Mandatory if you are going on a multi-night cruise, includes extra cover for some cruise-related risks such as cabin confinement and missed ports.
  • Medical Conditions and Pregnancy. NRMA may consider covering your pregnancy or pre-existing condition following a health questionnaire.

  • Behaviour while you were drunk or under the influence of drugs
  • Expenses related to a pre-existing medical condition
  • An act of war, invasion or revolution
  • Insolvency of a travel agent , tour operator or accommodation provider

  • Self-inflicted injury or illness, suicide or attempted suicide

Make sure you review the NRMA PDS for a detailed breakdown of what won't be covered, found under its list of general exclusions .

You can claim online via the NRMA website, following these instructions:

  • Describe the incident
  • Enter your expenses or losses
  • Upload any supporting documents
  • Provide your bank details
  • Review and finalise your claim

You can save and return to an incomplete claim for up to 28 days. Once you've lodged your claim, NRMA will update you within 10 working days.

You can also phone NRMA on 1300 135 640 between 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday. Or you can fill out a claim form and post it to:

NRMA Travel Insurance c/o Cover-More Claims Department Private Bag 913 North Sydney NSW 2059

NRMA offers particularly high benefit limits, so if you're travelling with expensive items or have a high rental car excess, it could be a good option.

However, any travellers keen to take part in risky or high-adrenaline activities may want to look elsewhere as NRMA doesn't offer an opportunity to add an adventure pack to its policies, whereas many other insurance brands do.

If you're still not sure about NRMA, you can compare other travel insurance companies here .

What type of documentation do I need when making a claim?

NRMA may ask you to provide a range of documents including receipts, valuation certificates, credit card or bank statements, photos or an emergency services report.

Does NRMA cover pre-existing conditions?

NRMA covers a range of pre-existing conditions as standard, including asthma, coeliac disease, and bunions. Some additional conditions are covered with specific conditions, such as not being hospitalised within a certain time period, while others you will need to apply for specific cover and pay an extra premium..

Important information about this website

Advertiser disclosure.

finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles

We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.

Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.

How we make money

We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.

Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.

Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money .

Sorting and Ranking Products

When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.

If you like communication, go elsewhere

I got a text from NRMA advising that my policy had been cancelled due to not being paid. I’m usually pretty good with all my payments, but obviously over Christmas things got a little bit tight this year. The First communication that either my wife or I received was a text that our policy was cancelled. Apparently we had been emailed but we have no record of the email in the nominated email address. It was even more distressing that I simply couldn’t catch up the payments, and had to go through the rigmarole of setting up a new policy so I’m covered. Also I was really disappointed to learn that half the details they had on file for my now defunct policy were incorrect.

Reply from NRMA Insurance

Hi Nathan, Thank you for bringing this to our attention, and I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. I understand how distressing and unexpected it can be to receive such notifications, especially during the holiday season. We are glad to hear that you have taken up a new policy as it is important to make sure that the asset is covered. If you are unhappy with your experience, you are welcome lodge a formal complaint. Full details can be found at this link https://www.nrma.com.au/complaints-resolutions ~ Cindy

Message: I want to cancel the above policy on 1/2/2024. I eventually managed, (after 2 hrs) to talk to someone at NRMA on 18/1/2024 to cancel the policy. I cannot find an e-mail address to put this in writing. The lady on the phone said she will confirm my cancelation with an e-mail, I have not received this e-mail that she assured me will be sent as confirmation. All e-mails NRMA send me are No reply! Your online site is completely unhelpful. Nowhere to cancel a NRMA policy. Pleased I never had to contact NRMA for a claimNo one answers your132132 number

Hi Johan, It is disappointing to hear about your experience with the cancellation of your policy. We would like to further assist you with that. Would you be able to send us a PM with further information on https://www.facebook.com/nrmainsurance/? ~ Cindy

Beyond annoyed

Beyond annoyed! Have just spent 4 hours on the phone trying to fix a mistake that your customer representative made processing our payment. May not have been so annoyed had we not dealt with a rude customer service rep in the meantime. The fault was most definitely on your end NRMA! Not ours! This mess will take another couple of days to fix yet - ridiculous! I’ll supply my policy number in the email I send in the next few days - as I said, still fixing it!

Date of experience : 27 November 2023

Hi Amanda, thanks for sharing your feedback with us here. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience caused. While mistakes can occur, there is no way that one should be subjected to rude behaviour. We do hope that this matter is resolved soon. ~Adi

My claim for an accident was given the extreme runaround

My claim for an accident was given the extreme runaround, l even had to prove that my policy was current and that I had paid my premium. When I supplied this proof they still wanted to charge the full excess even though the accident was not my fault. I had to get a copy of the CCTV footage at a great inconvenience to myself before they waived this. Text messages to their claims department were quite often ignored. They are soooo shonky. Beware!!!! Maximising shareholder profits by screwing their customers.

Date of experience : 10 September 2023

Hi Glen, My sincerest apologies for the difficulties you faced throughout your claim process. We would love to look into this for you. Can you please send us a private message via Facebook using the link below with your claim number? https://www.facebook.com/nrmainsurance/ ~Max

Take care, lest you pay too much

Ensure that you get a couple of other quotes always. Very polite and well meaning staff, but they are not authorised to do anything really. They disappear to get authorisations often. Be prepared to wait for extended periods. Then make sure you ring around and get other quotes. NRMA was twice the cost! Be careful. And this is despite having two insurances with them currently with no claim and loyalty bonus. I am switching my policies to another provider.

Date of experience : 09 November 2023

Hi Vincent, we are sorry to hear you are moving to another provider as you feel our pricing is not competitive. When comparing prices, all companies offer different features and benefits with their policies so pricing will differ from company to company. While many details may look the same, there are often differences. We understand price is important but so is the coverage you receive, and we are proud to offer our customers the peace of mind that comes with having Australia’s largest general insurance group in your corner. ~Kaz

So disappointed with lack of service

So disappointed with lack of service. My car burnt out (Maringinup fires) whilst assisting with rescuing 60 horses. Lodged online claim within 24hrs, two phone calls from us at no point given details of process or timeline. A week later car still not collected and no contact from NRMA. Pls don’t tell me you’ll send an assessor or a tow truck one more time, it has no wheels, steering wheel, seats or anything, it is a shell. It will take 2 seconds for an assessor to say it’s written off. Pls no more sorry’s, I want action. you have my name and details, this goes to show what i'm pointing out, why should i repeatedly contact you, where is your customer service to contact me? you have my name, phone number and email, absolutely appalling service.

Date of experience : 30 November 2023

Hi Sandi, thanks for bringing this to our notice. Sincere apologies for the delays that you have experienced in relation to your recent motor claim. This is surely not the experience we would offer to our customers. So that we can have a closer look at this, please private message us through Facebook Messenger https://go.nrma.com.au/FBmessenger, where we can securely take your details to pass on your feedback to the concerned team requesting them to contact you. Incompetent

Incompetent staff. Lack understanding of their systems. Inability to compensate “clients” or reward long standing “clients”. Lack or empathy or ability to instill or renew trust in the insurance company. You think you pay for membership and care/help when you need it but incompetent staff set something completely different up. And there is NO compensation for their errors!!!! Interesting that my app profile says I have membership!! What a colossal F-up!!!!

Date of experience : 21 January 2024

Hi Trish, It is disappointing to hear about your experience. It looks like our friends over at the NRMA (roadside assistance) are better suited to help with this one. Although we still share the same brand, NRMA Insurance and the NRMA went our separate ways back in 2000. We’re still here to help where we can, but for this particular query, get in touch with the NRMA team on 13 11 22, head to mynrma.com.au/contact or visit their Facebook page at https://go.nrma.com.au/facebookmynrma. ~ Cindy

NRMA is one of the few companies that still retain geographically located branches that you can physically walk into and talk to a human being and get your request actioned on the spot with an attentive response and excellent customer service and support. I have had a similar positive experience with NRMA roadside assistance also. Well done NRMA

At NRMA, we strive to maintain accessible branches and deliver excellent support to our customers. POLICIES DISAPPEARED AND REAPPEARED

Looked up my MRMA Account earlier today to check when my car’s policy was due to renew. It stated that it had not been renewed and had expired in March this year. First, spent an hour checking that I had paid it. Confirmed via bank that I had. Tried to speak to someone - hopeless. Tried to log in again and as usual stated they were experiencing technical difficulties. Again two hours later and my car policy had reappeared- current until March 2024. No way I will renew with this hopeless crowd.

Date of experience : 07 December 2023

Hi Ed, thanks for letting us know, that is a very strange thing to happen and we would like to follow up with our IT team to get your account checked, could you message us at this link please so we can help https://www.facebook.com/nrmainsurance ~Kaz

Online quote

Online quote. I only have the contents in my bedroom to insure. During the quote process I selected that I am renting as part of a sharehouse and I only have one bedroom I am renting in and I did not select any extra insurance options or insured items. Despite all this NRMA reckons I have $88k worth of contents to insure, with the minimum amount I could choose being $40k. How does a multi-million dollar, major insurance company approve such a daft asset calculation system?

Date of experience : 15 December 2023

Hi Dave, thank you for sharing your experience. It is difficult to comment without the details of your quote however, if you need clarification or assistance, please consider calling our team. You can contact them on 132132 available 8am-8pm AEDT for more information. Hopefully this matter will be clarified and explained better for you. ~ Checo

Overseas call centre staff who are not…

Overseas call centre staff who are not knowledgable in the products. In the past, when local Australian based staff have answered my calls they have been amazingly helpful - giving me lots of options when renewing. Not this time - do not like speaking with overseas call centres who read from scripts and are unable to help you in any way should you require information on numerous different options to work out what is best for me - the customer.

Date of experience : 08 November 2023

Hi Tracey, thank you for sharing your feedback with us. Sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused by the service you received from our contact centre staff. We appreciate your understanding and want to assure you that all our staff, including those in the overseas call centre, undergo comprehensive training to provide assistance. We are continuously working to enhance our services to better meet your needs. Thank you for being a valued customer. ~Adi

Fraudulent CTP Green Slip renewal…

Fraudulent CTP Green Slip renewal document I have been with the NRMA for 50 years and was issued a CTP Green Slip renewal document by email. It stated "Age of driver" as 69 years (correct) but when I asked about reducing this to allow for my 34 year-old daughter to be allowed under the policy they asked about "DEMERIT POINTS". There was no mention within the 6 pages of the renewal document about my demerit points (I have 3). They then wanted an additional $120. I lodged a complaint with the NRMA however they hadn't got back to me with an answer and I had no option but to renew the policy electronically to ensure that my registration didn't lapse. I am still waiting for a detailed resolution to my problem (one month later).

Date of experience : 10 December 2023

Hi Bruce, thanks for your feedback, we appreciate your loyalty over the past 50 years and sincerely apologise for any inconvenience you've experienced with your CTP Green Slip renewal. We understand the importance of clarity in policy information. Regarding the additional charge for demerit points, please be aware that CTP premiums are regulated by Service NSW, and as such, we do not have control over these rates. Additionally, anytime we update information on the CTP policy, any other missing information must also be recorded. We apologise for the delay in resolving your concern. ~Adi

We are pleased to hear you did call back and spoke to a helpful consultant who provided service you should expect from us. We do appreciate all feedback as it does help us improve our service. ~Kaz

NRMA rescued me

NRMA rescued me. My caravan insurance was up for renewal. Recently the caravan received minor cosmetic hail damage in a storm. The structural integrity of the caravan was not compromised. When I notified my previous insurer of the damage, they told me to make a claim or they would cancel my policy. Knowing, from other people's experience, a claim would lead to my caravan being written off, making a claim was not an option. They cancelled my policy. At age 75, I have an estimated 5 years maximum of caravanning ahead of me, if my caravan was written off, I would not resume caravanning.

Hi Dave, thank you for taking the time to share your experience with NRMA. We are delighted to hear that our team was able to assist you during a challenging situation with your caravan insurance. It's disheartening to learn about the minor cosmetic hail damage your caravan sustained in a storm. We understand the importance of maintaining the structural integrity of your caravan, and we are pleased that you found our approach to be supportive. We empathize with your concern about the potential consequences of making a claim, especially given the possibility of your caravan being written off. At NRMA, we strive to provide solutions that prioritize our customers' needs and concerns. We are committed to offering a service that not only meets your insurance requirements but also ensures your peace of mind. We appreciate your loyalty as a customer, and we look forward to continuing to serve you in the future. If there's anything more, we can do for you or if you have any further feedback, please don't hesitate to reach out. ~ Checo

Travel Insurance guidance at its' best.

I'd had a very disappointing experience a couple of weeks prior trying to organise travel insurance for hubby and myself. Almost gave NRMA the flick .. but given we have other policies with them I tried again. Bingo - I hit the jackpot. I was lucky enough to have Robyn (Perth) pick up my call. This lady is the epitome of excellent customer service. Her product knowledge, empathy, professionalism, respect, and down right lovely manner has restored my faith in the organisation 100%! I am truly grateful for her service and now find myself feeling confident in the knowledge that we have perfect travel insurance for our needs. Many thanks Robyn! (Consultant Extrordinaire)

Date of experience : 16 October 2023

Hi Penelope! My sincerest apologies for your poor experience with us prior to speaking with Robyn. We are incredibly grateful that you decided to give us another chance and were able to be looked after correctly. I am thrilled to hear that we have been able to restore your faith in us. I wish hubby and yourself the safest travels and a fantastic trip :) ~Max

SGIC to NRMA change - TERRIBLE

Process of change from SGIC to NRMA has been a disgrace. Terrible communication, cancelled policies, terrible online accessibility, and text messages saying my policies are cancelled (when they weren't). I was really happy with SGIC with three policies, now I have one and will probably cancel it after this experience. They don't seem to care about South Australia! I went back to the RAA. Even the staff in the NRMA call centre admit it has been a terrible changeover. The staff are very helpful at the NRMA, which is why I was happy to change. Pity all other aspects are beyond disappointing (and stressful!).

Date of experience : 19 November 2023

It is really disappointing to hear of the issues you describe Daniel, sadly there were some problems we faced with the transfer but our teams have been working very hard to minimise and resolve the issues. Thank you for the kind words about our colleagues. We do appreciate your feedback and we are really sorry to see these problems caused you to leave us. We hope you may give us another chance in the future! ~Kaz

My Delightful experience at NRMA in Wagga Wagga NSWMy experience at NRMA located in Wagga…

My experience at NRMA located in Wagga Wagga NSW was great because of the personal attention I received as soon as I walked in. I was greeted with a smile and , how can I help you? First impressions mean a lot. That was the beginning of kindly explaining the coverage that fit my set of circumstances. I did not feel rushed through this process. I am grateful for the help I received from Ms Vimbai Murambi.

Date of experience : 20 October 2023

Thanks for the awesome review, Beverley! We really value your input and happy to hear we hit the mark for you. It's always amazing to hear that we have been successful in our goal of providing our customer the best experience. Have a nice day! ~ Checo

AXA Assistance USA Travel Insurance Review 2024

Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate insurance products to write unbiased product reviews.

Travel insurance is important because it can help cover the cost of unexpected medical expenses while you're traveling. It can also reimburse you for lost or stolen baggage, canceled flights, and other unforeseeable problems that may occur while you're away from home.

Simply put, there's a lot to consider.

But not all policies are created equal, and you must understand what you're covered for before you purchase a policy. This article will look in-depth at AXA Assistance USA travel insurance. We'll discuss the costs, coverage limits, exclusions, and more to help you make an informed decision about whether or not this particular travel insurance provider is right for you.

AXA Assistance USA keeps travel insurance simple with gold, silver, and platinum plans. Emergency medical and CFAR are a couple of the options you can expect. Read on to learn more about AXA.

  • Silver, Gold, and Platinum plans available
  • Trip interruption coverage of up to 150% of the trip cost
  • Emergency medical coverage of up to $250,000

AXA Assistance USA is among the best travel insurance companies . It covers the fundamentals of travel insurance, with coverage for trip cancellations, medical expenses, and emergency medical/non-medical evacuation. With three plans, AXA also offers coverage for travelers with various budgets.

It's worth noting that many important add-ons aren't available for AXA's cheapest Silver plan, such as pre-existing condition coverage, rental car add-ons, and Schengen travel insurance. Cancel for any reason coverage is also only available for AXA's most expensive Platinum plan.

Coverage Options Offered by AXA

AXA Assistance USA offers three levels of coverage: Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Each plan comes with different protections and varying coverage limits, with the Silver being the most basic option and Platinum offering the most premium coverage.

Some policies might even include added coverage free of charge, such as a waiver for pre-existing conditions , which is free for Gold and Platinum plans as long as you purchase your plan within 14 days of your trip deposit.

Specialized Coverage Options

The plan you purchase will determine which add-ons are available. For example, those with a Platinum plan can add CFAR (cancel for any reason) coverage , allowing you to receive a full refund if you cancel your trip within 14 days of making the initial deposit.

Or, if you want extra protection for your rental car, depending on your AXA plan, you might be able to add a collision damage waiver (CDW). Policyholders with Gold plans can add $35,000 CDW, and those with Platinum plans can include $50,000 CDW.

If you're traveling within the Schengen Territory, which is made up of 27 European countries, you may eligible for Schengen Travel Insurance, which covers you in all 27 countries. This option is only available for Gold and Platinum travelers and coverage lasts up to 90 days.

AXA Assistance USA Travel Insurance Cost

The premium you pay will depend on various factors, including the age of the travelers, destination, and total trip costs. The average cost of travel insurance is 4% to 8% of your travel costs.

After inputting some personal information, such as your age and state of residence, along with your trip details, like travel dates, destination, and trip costs, you'll get an instant quote for the plans available for your trip. And from there, it's easy to compare each option based on your coverage needs and budget.

Now let's look at a few examples to estimate AXA's coverage costs.

As of 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following  AXA travel insurance quotes:

  • AXA Silver: $83
  • AXA Gold: $107
  • AXA Platinum: $127

Premiums for AXA plans are between 2.7% and 4.2% of the trip's cost, well below the average cost of travel insurance. It's also relatively cheap compared to many of its competitors

AXA provides the following quotes for a 30-year-old traveler from California heading to Japan for two weeks on a $4,000 trip:

  • AXA Silver: $109
  • AXA Gold: $128
  • AXA Platinum: $153

Once again, premiums forAXA plans are between 3.6% and 3.8%, below the average cost for travel insurance.

A 65-year-old couple looking to escape New York for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following AXA quotes:

  • AXA Silver: $392
  • AXA Gold: $462
  • AXA Platinum: $550

Premiums for AXA plans are between 6.5% and 9.2%, which is roughly in line with the average cost for travel insurance. This is to be expected, as travel insurance is often more expensive for older travelers.

How to Purchase and Manage Your AXA Policy

The process of purchasing an AXA policy is simple. After obtaining your quote, you'll need to decide which of AXA's three plans you want to buy. When you pay for your plan, be prepared to provide additional personal information, like your birthday, phone number, and address.

Once you finalize your purchase, you'll have a 10-day free look period, in which you can cancel your policy and get your money back.

How to File a Claim with AXA Travel Insurance

To file a claim with AXA Assistance USA, head to the claims forms online to find the appropriate form. Once you've filled out your form and gathered the required documentation, you can email them to [email protected] or send them by mail to:

AXA Assistance USA

If you need assistance when filing claims, AXA's claims office can be reached at 1-888-957-5015 (within the U.S.) and 1-727-450-8794 (outside the U.S.). Office hours are 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. ET on Thursdays and 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. ET on all other weekdays.

AXA's U.S. branch has few reviews on Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau — just over 20 between the two sites. Its UK branch has over 1,100 reviews, most of which are overwhelmingly negative. However, the quality of AXA Travel Insurance UK isn't necessarily indicative of its U.S. coverage.

In fact, on SquareMouth, where the majority of AXA U.S.'s reviews, reviews are generally positive. It received an average of 4.22 stars out of five across over 900 reviews. Customers reported that adjusting an AXA policy was easy and the customer service team was responsive. However, reviews on the claims process was more mixed, with spotty communication and long wait times.

See how AXA travel insurance compares to top travel insurance providers.

AXA Assistance USA vs. AIG Travel Guard

When comparing AXA to Travel Guard , we'll look at the coverage levels from their mid-tier plans, the Silver plan and Travel Guard Preferred plan, respectively.

With Travel Guard Preferred plan, you'll get:

  • Trip cancellation coverage up to $150,000
  • Trip interruption coverage up to $225,000
  • Emergency medical coverage of $50,000
  • Coverage for baggage loss, theft, or damage up to $1,000
  • Travel delay coverage of up to $800

Comparing those Travel Guard coverages with AXA's Silver plan, you'll see that AXA's coverage limits are a bit higher. With AXA's Silver plan you'll get $100,000 in emergency medical coverage, for example. And the baggage loss coverage limit is up to $1,500.

If you're looking for greater coverage limits, AXA makes the most sense in this scenario. But premiums will also vary based on factors like the traveler's age, trip destination, and trip cost. So you'll have to run your own numbers to make a final decision.

Allianz Travel Insurance provides single-trip and multi-trip insurance for travelers who want to go abroad for an extended period of time. And, like with all insurance, the various plans have varying degrees of coverage.

Allianz Travel Insurance's most popular single-trip option is the OneTrip Prime plan, which offers:

  • Trip cancellation coverage up to $100,000
  • Trip interruption coverage up to $150,000
  • Emergency medical coverage for $50,000
  • Coverage for baggage loss, theft or damage up to $1,000
  • Travel delay coverage up to $800

Looking at AXA's mid-tier Silver plan, you'll see that, again, AXA offers more coverage for emergency medical and baggage loss, theft, or damage than Allianz Travel Insurance. That said, if cost is an essential factor for you, you'll have to get quotes using your personal trip information to make an informed decision.

AXA Assistance USA vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance

Already have a great travel credit card, like the Chase Sapphire Reserve or American Express Platinum? Some of the standard coverages, such as rental car insurance, may be included in the card you already have. It's a good idea to research the terms of your credit card's travel protection before purchasing a separate travel insurance policy.

If you're driving to your destination and don't have any non-refundable trip expenses, the coverage from your credit card may be enough. Another time it might work is if you have health insurance covering you while abroad and you're in good health without worrying about possible medical costs.

It's essential to remember that credit card coverage is usually secondary. This means you'll have to file a claim with the other applicable insurance before filing a claim with your credit card company.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed AXA Assistance USA

We researched AXA by evaluating its travel insurance plans compared to other plans from the top travel insurance companies. The aspects we looked at included, but were not limited to, different coverage options, claims limits, what is covered, available add-ons, and extra services for policy holders.

What's important when choosing a policy isn't just the price — it's making sure you're getting adequate coverage that meets your needs without breaking the bank. Filing a claim should also be easy and stress-free if you ever have to use your policy.

AXA Assistance USA FAQs

If you're diagnosed with COVID-19 before a trip and need to cancel, AXA may cover your expenses. Additionally, a COVID-19 diagnosis during a trip may be covered under AXA's medical expense, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits. Be sure to review your policy to ensure coverage details.

While you may extend your coverage in certain circumstances, such as extended hospitalization, and update your travel dates prior to your departure, you can't extend AXA travel insurance plans while you're traveling.

AXA's Gold and Platinum plan cover pre-existing medical conditions as long as you purchase your policy within 14 days of your initial trip deposit. AXA's Silver plan does not cover pre-existing conditions and has a 60-day look-back period.

You can download AXA claims forms on its website and email them to [email protected].

AXA isn't the most flexible travel insurance company and isn't great at specializing, but it offers comprehensive general coverage. Its prices aren't significantly more expensive or cheaper than its competitors.
