Rolling Stones Announce 2014 Tour

The Rolling Stones will keep rolling in 2014. The band just announced a dozen shows in Australia, New Zealand and Japan, with a special kick-off date set for February 21 in Abu Dhabi. Mick Taylor , the group's guitarist during their fertile period of 1969-74, will again appear as a special guest at most of the shows.

Other stops on the '14 on Fire' tour include Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland, along with three separate shows in Tokyo. The Stones are promising at least two more dates in Asia to be announced later.

The band is coming off a series of huge concerts in the U.K. and the U.K. over the past year -- with Taylor making several appearances, including the Newark and London shows. The latter was recently released as the concert film ' Sweet Summer Sun: Hyde Park Live .'

The tour marked the 50th anniversary of the Stones. Mick Jagger , Keith Richards , Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood last toured in 2007 in support of their most recent studio album, 'A Bigger Bang.' Last year, they released a career-spanning greatest-hits collection, ' GRRR! ,' that included a pair of new songs.

Rumours – Lady GaGa??

The press seems to take note on what fans speculate across the net..

With headlines like “ Exclusive: Rolling Stones US tour set to feature iconic popstar after setlist leak ” ( mirror.co.uk ) and “ The Rolling Stones’ US tour ‘set to feature iconic popstar after setlist leak’ ” ( dailymail.co.uk ) the tabloids link the rehearsals of SSOH with the guess that Lady Gaga will join the Stones on their tour.

Well, “Calm down!” is my first guess on this. Lady Gaga might join in on the opening night – maybe – but the wole tour? Nonsense, I’ld say. Not that I (or we all) would not apprechiate this – but I think, that this ain’t gonna happen… what do you think?

Woah – only 9 days more and counting down…

think the double date nights. Los Angeles, New Jersey, Chicago. I can’t wait and love your count down. Looks like rain for Houston…. thank you for all you do

You’re welcome, Larry! ^^

I would guess she might do a guest appearance or a few but not the whole tour.

I would think it is a good bet angry and sweet sounds of heaven will be played a lot and maybe mess it up and whole wide world with a lot if the rest be rotated in.

You never know but just because they will play SSOH doesn’t mean lady Gaga will be there fir everyone.

Not to mention they have the new female singer who can easily handle the part very well.

Good point here, Robert! Never underestimate Chanel Haynes… ^^

Satisfaction Way: Glendale renames street for Rolling Stones concert at State Farm Stadium

rolling stones tour 2014

Glendale, Arizona, is taking a page from its Taylor Swift playbook .

The city is ceremonially renaming a portion of 95th Avenue in Westgate Entertainment District Satisfaction Way in honor of the Rolling Stones ' concert on Tuesday, May 7 , at State Farm Stadium.

On Monday, April 15, Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers proclaimed May 7 to be Ruby Tuesday. He read the proclamation at a news conference that featured students from the School of Rock getting their ya-ya’s out on a cover of “Sympathy for the Devil.”

The mayor then boarded a cherry picker and was lifted up to uncover the Satisfaction Way sign.

Unlike any other street sign in the city, this one has the "Hackney Diamonds" update of the Stones' iconic tongue-and-lips logo.

Why Glendale is renaming a street for the Rolling Stones

If you're wondering why they're making all this fuss around a concert by the Rolling Stones in 2024, there are several reasons.

“This is the first act ever to bring three separate stadium tours to State Farm Stadium and Glendale,” City Manager Kevin Phelps says.

Plus, as city spokeswoman Sue Breding notes, they are "the world's great rock 'n' roll band."

Phelps himself is a bit of a Stones fan, having seen one of their earliest stadium shows in 1981 at the Kingdome in Seattle.

“When you think about how long ago 1981 was, I think it’s remarkable just the longevity and the fact that they’ve been able to span multiple generations of the same family who follow the music,” Phelps says. “I think it’s really unique.”

Mayor Weiers was thrilled to be involved in honoring the Rolling Stones.

"I grew up with the Stones," he says.

"I don’t think there’s too many people alive who don’t know who the Rolling Stones are. And whether you love them or not, you can’t argue the fact that they are one of the most — if not the most — popular rock ‘n’ roll bands ever. They cut across a lot of different groups of people. And how do you not like a guy who’s still performing more than 60 years later. It’s pretty incredible."

The Stones last played the stadium in 2019, a sold-out date on their No Filter Tour.

State Farm Stadium general manager Andy Gorchov says, "We are thrilled to be hosting The Rolling Stones for a third time. This marks another exciting addition to our lineup of prestigious events, reaffirming our commitment to delivering unforgettable experiences to fans.”

The Rolling Stones agreed to Glendale using their iconic logo

The Rolling Stones were very agreeable to allowing the city to use their logo on the sign for Satisfaction Way, which stretches from Camelback Road to Glendale Avenue.

“When I first got to Glendale, we typically would try to reach out to artists coming in and we would have to do a lot of arm-twisting just to get them involved in any kind of additional promotion or opportunity,” Phelps says.

That’s before the Swift City campaign the city rolled out in honor of Taylor Swift launching The Eras Tour with two performances at State Farm Stadium in 2023, for which the city won a national marketing award.

Ruby Tuesday will be celebrated all along Satisfaction Way. You've got the concert to the south, of course. But on the north end, merchants in the Westgate Entertainment District will have special Ruby Tuesday offerings, ranging from Pour Some Brown Sugar on Me Wings at Shane’s Rib Shack to Paint it Black punch at Johnny’s Chicken & Waffles.

Phelps says the city has been very “entrepreneurial” in how it tries to leverage these opportunities.

“I think it’s important to understand why we’re doing this,” Phelps says. “The main reason is that there’s been this shift from just being a concert to now being an event. And that event is now going longer. People are staying in hotel rooms overnight.

"So part of what we’re doing, having fun with promoting the artist coming to Glendale, is just to remind them this is special, take some time off of work, come in and don’t just spend a few hours but maybe spend a few days here in Glendale.”

Glendale has done similar campaigns for Guns N' Roses, Taylor Swift

The first campaign Phelps recalls doing was for a Guns N’ Roses concert in 2016 . Glendale renamed itself Paradise City for that one.

At the time, he recalls, “it was hard to get the band and the manager engaged in that campaign.”

How does the city go about deciding when a concert rises to the level that suggests this type of campaign?

“We’re looking for that unique component to it,” Phelps says. “State Farm Stadium has been very successful the past couple years at bringing a whole host of artists that have filled up the stadium.”

'You don't want to hand out a thousand keys to the city'

There needs to be an angle, whether it’s a tour launch or the Stones becoming the first band to bring three separate tours to State Farm Stadium.

“You can go to the well too often,” Phelps says. “You don’t want to hand out a thousand keys to the city.

"But I would say this: We probably won’t force-feed what we can do as a city to help promote an event. It’s going to take a partnership with us and the artist and their management.”

The Stones were willing to lean into it and get creative, including allowing the use of their iconic lips logo.

“That really showed us that they were willing to assist us and it wasn’t just, ‘What can you do for us?’" Phelps said.

"It was, ‘How can we help you really have some fun with this?’ I think in the future, we’ll need to have that kind of partner. And then as long as we continue to show success with these types of campaigns, I think it’ll be easier to get the artist engaged.”

How Satisfaction Way is helping Glendale build its brand

To Phelps, this represents a long-term vision for the future of the city.

“This is helping the city of Glendale to build its brand around the Entertainment District,” Phelps says. “We’re putting this effort in to help our merchants and our hotels in the area really leverage what we’re doing. I’m just fortunate to have a really creative team in our media department that really thinks out of the box on this stuff.”

The Rolling Stones' Hackney Diamonds Tour comes to Glendale on Tuesday, May 7. Doors open at 6 p.m. Music starts at 8.

Dickey Betts, Allman Brothers Band Singer-Guitarist, Dead at 80

By David Browne

David Browne

Dickey Betts , the singer, songwriter, and guitarist of the Allman Brothers Band whose piercing solos, beloved songs and hell-raising spirit defined the band and Southern rock in general, died Thursday morning at the age of 80. The cause was cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Betts’ manager David Spero confirmed to Rolling Stone .

Dickey Betts: The Lost Allman Brother

Dickey betts: 15 essential allman brothers band songs, flashback: the allman brothers’ last jam at 2014 farewell gig.

“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Betts family announce the peaceful passing of Forrest Richard ‘Dickey’ Betts (December 12, 1943 – April 18, 2024) at the age of 80 years old,” Betts’ family announced in a statement to Rolling Stone . “The legendary performer, songwriter, bandleader, and family patriarch was at his home in Osprey, Florida, surrounded by his family. Dickey was larger-than-life, and his loss will be felt worldwide. At this difficult time, the family asks for prayers and respect for their privacy in the coming days. More information will be forthcoming at the appropriate time.”

Although he was often overshadowed by Gregg and Duane, the brothers who gave the Allmans their name, Betts was equally vital to the band. His sweetly sinuous guitar style introduced elements of Western swing and jazz into the band’s music, especially when he was duetting with Duane. As a singer and writer, Betts was responsible for the band’s biggest hit, 1973’s “Ramblin’ Man,” as well as some of their most recognizable songs: the moody instrumental “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,” the jubilant “Jessica,” and their late-period comeback hit “Crazy Love.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Born Forrest Richard Betts in West Palm Beach, Florida, on December 12, 1943, Betts began playing ukulele around age five, followed by banjo and mandolin. “When I finally got to about seventh grade,” he told RS , “I learned about girls and rock & roll and Chuck Berry.” As a teenager, he put together his own band while earning a living as a house painter and mail carrier.

Although his initial role in the band was co-lead guitarist along with Duane, Betts made his mark as a writer thanks to his exuberant “ Revival ” on the band’s second album, Idlewild South . During the band’s first few years, he and Duane took rock-guitar improvisation and two-guitar dueling to new heights, as heard on the 13-minute version of “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” on the band’s At Fillmore East live album from 1971. Right before Duane Allman’s death, the band recorded Betts’ “Blue Sky,” a country-influenced gallop inspired by his first wife, who is Native American; the song that became one of the band’s signature songs.

After Duane Allman’s death in a motorcycle accident in 1971, Betts became the band’s de facto lead guitarist and frontman, a role he wasn’t always comfortable with. Featuring both “Ramblin’ Man” and “Jessica” — the latter named after Betts’ daughter — the band’s 1973 album, Brothers and Sisters , album crossed over into pop. Betts’ 1974 solo album, Highway Call — one of the best of the Allmans offshoot projects — incorporated country, jazz, bluegrass, and gospel.

The bond between the Allmans and Jimmy Carter, whose 1976 presidential campaign they supported by way of benefit concerts, also applied to Betts personally. “I remember going to a jazz concert at the White House [1978],” Betts told Rolling Stone last year. “Of course, I got there and I left my damn ID at home. But the Marines said, ‘Oh, go ahead in.’ They knew me very well and knew I wasn’t going to do any harm. Jimmy was walking around the premises and someone said to me, ‘Go over and talk to him,’ but I didn’t want to bother him. Then I went to use the men’s room in the White House, and as I was coming out, I ran into Jimmy with a group of people and he said, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, this is Dickey Betts, one of the best songwriters around nowadays.’ That just floored me.”

In the Nineties, the Allmans experienced a musical and career rebirth, and Betts became its driving force especially after Gregg relapsed in the middle of the decade. But Betts could also be moody and volatile; in 1976, he was arrested for drinking and clashing with police. That side of him resumed; in 1993, he was arrested in Saratoga Springs, New York, after getting into a shoving match with cops, and his drinking led to fights with band members and missed shows. In 2000, he parted ways with the Allmans. Betts always insisted he was fired, while drummer John Lee “Jaimoe” Johnson told Rolling Stone in 2017 that Betts quit. “Dickey was always sort of the guy who was — I don’t want to say troubled, but was more of a loner,” Allmans manager Bert Holman told RS in 2017. “More separate than the rest of the guys.”

Although his falling out with the Allmans left a bitter taste in his mouth for years, Betts told RS that, in the end, he looked back fondly on his decades with them. “I would’ve done something,” he said. “I would have worked for somebody landscaping. I was very pragmatic and industrious. But it wouldn’t have been as nice as what happened when I met up with that bunch of guys.”

Despite the turbulence inside the Allman Brothers Band, Betts said he and Gregg had spoken right before Allman’s death, in 2017. After Allman’s death — and after Betts talked about retirement — he was coaxed into returning to the road in 2018, with his own son (also named Duane) joining his band. In August of that year, though, Betts suffered and then recovered from a mild stroke. Last December, Betts attended an 80th-birthday concert in his honor by the Allman Betts Family Revival band, near Betts’ longtime Florida home.

NEW YORK (AP) — Heart — the pioneering band that melds Nancy Wilson’s shredding guitar with her sister Ann’s powerhouse vocals — is hitting the road this spring and fall for a world tour that Nancy Wilson describes as “the full-on rocker size.”

“I’ve been strengthening. I’ve got my trainer,” she says. “You go one day at a time and you strengthen one workout session at a time. It’s a lot of work, but it’s the only job I know how to do.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers who gave us classic tracks like “Magic Man,” “Crazy on You” and “Alone” will be playing all the hits, some tracks from of their solo albums — like Ann Wilson’s “Miss One and Only” and Nancy Wilson’s “Love Mistake” — and a new song called “Roll the Dice.”

“I like to say we have really good problems because the problem we have is to choose between a bunch of different, really cool songs that people love already,” says Nancy Wilson.

Like “Barracuda,” a sonic burst which first appeared on the band’s second album, “Little Queen” and is one of the band’s most memorable songs.

“You can’t mess with ‘Barracuda.’ It’s just the way it is. It is great. You get on the horse and you ride. It’s a galloping steed of a ride to go on. And for everybody, including the band.”

The tour kicks off Saturday at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, and will hit cities including Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Detroit, as well as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado. International dates include stops in London, Oslo, Berlin, Stockholm, Montreal and Glasgow.

The band’s Royal Flush Tour will have Cheap Trick as the opening act for many stops, but Def Leppard and Journey will join for three stadium dates in Cleveland, Toronto and Boston this summer.

Ann and Nancy Wilson will be filled out by Ryan Wariner (lead and rhythm guitar), Ryan Waters (guitars), Paul Moak (guitars, keyboards and backing vocals), Tony Lucido (bass and backing vocals) and Sean T. Lane (drums).

The tour is the first in several years for Heart, which was rocked by a body blow in 2016 when Ann Wilson’s husband was arrested for assaulting Nancy’s 16-year-old twin sons. Nancy Wilson says that’s all in the past.

“We can take any kind of turbulence, me and Ann, and we’ve always been OK together,” she says. “We’re still steering the ship and happy to do it together. So we’re tight.”

The new tour will take them to Canada, which was warm to the band when they were starting out as what Nancy Wilson calls “a couple of chicks from Seattle.” She recalls Vancouver embracing Heart, and touring in one van across Canada in the dead of winter on two lane highways.

The Wilson sisters broke rock’s glass ceiling in the ‘70s and Nancy Wilson says they only had male influences to look to, like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Moody Blues.

Now she says she looks out and loves seeing generations of female rockers. “You have boygenius and you have Billie Eilish and you have Olivia Rodrigo and so many amazing women — Maggie Rogers and Sheryl Crow, who calls us her big influence. And then Billie Eilish might have Sheryl Crow as her influence. So it’s a really nice legacy to pass along. I like to say we’re the OG — the original gangsters — of women and rock.”

Heart has made it into the Rock Hall, won Grammys, sold millions of albums and rocked hundreds of thousands of fans but Nancy Wilson has one place she’d still like to shine.

Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of their debut album, “Dreamboat Annie,” which was the same year that “Saturday Night Live” started. “So we’re actually kind of putting it out there — Heart never played on ‘Saturday Night Live.’ But what about the 50th birthday party with Heart?”
