TOUR Championship

ATLANTA — The PGA Tour season concludes at East Lake Golf Club for the Tour Championship this week, as the top 30 players look to take home the FedEx Cup.

Here is everything you need for the Tour Championship: a preview, full TV schedule, streaming schedule, and complete list of first-round tee times.

Tour Championship Information

Where: East Lake Golf Club (Par 70, 7,346 yards)

When: Aug. 24-27th

Purse: $75 million ($18 million to the winner)

Defending Champ: Rory McIlroy

Tour Championship Preview

The final event of the 2023 season is here as the PGA Tour looks to crown a FedEx Cup champion at the Tour Championship. Players will compete for a $75 million purse, where the winner will take home a whopping $18 million.

This week is different from the BMW Championship and FedEx St. Jude Championship. Players start with strokes depending on where they finished on the points standings. Scottie Scheffler will start at 10-under, Viktor Hovland at 8-under, Rory McIlroy at 7-under, Jon Rahm at 6-under and so on.

East Lake Golf Club is a doozy. Multiple par-4s stretch beyond 450 yards, and there are only two par-5s on the course. Keeping it in the fairways will be imperative. Water comes into play on some pivotal holes, so avoiding the penalty areas will be a crucial component to hoisting the FedEx Cup trophy.

McIlroy sits in a strong spot entering the week. Last year, he came from behind and waltzed past Scheffler to win his third FedEx Cup. With nine straight top-9s and his game in form, can the Northern Irishman close it out in Atlanta again?

Scheffler fell short last year, but did he learn his lesson?

Hovland is coming off a historic 61 at Olympia Fields to win the BMW Championship, and he looks dialed in this week. Can he go back-to-back?

Xander Schauffele plays East Lake better than anyone in the field. Only Tiger Woods plays this course better historically. Schauffele won in 2017 and has finished in the top seven in the past six seasons.

So many intriguing storylines are here in Atlanta as the top players in the world will battle it out at East Lake. Of course, they will need to beat the heat too.

WILMINGTON, Del. — Sahith Theegala knew what was on the line and knew what he had to do, which may explain why he had the damndest time keeping his hands in one place.

“Yeah, I was really nervous this morning. I had my best friend Roy with me this week, and it was cool having him by my side. But I was nervous,” Theegala said Sunday afternoon after a closing 68. “I had a little bit of the shakes warming up. I couldn't hold my hands still.” In case the message wasn’t clear, Theegala added “It was a wild ride.”

And a ride that Theegala and a select few will continue one more week.

While Patrick Cantlay captured the BMW Championship at Wilmington Country Club there were 29 others who can count themselves winners in Delaware on Sunday, finishing inside the top 30 in the FedEx Cup to earn a trip to next week’s Tour Championship.

“Yeah, it's really exciting,” said Corey Conners, whose T-5 finish will keep his season alive. “It's always a goal at the start of the year. I feel like I've had a solid season. Still trying to get in the winner's circle again, but a lot of really solid play, giving myself some chances, and really excited to be going back to East Lake.”

MORE: The clubs Patrick Cantlay used to win the BMW Championship

Aside from a Brinks truck worth of guaranteed money—$500,000 for last place at East Lake, $18 million for a victory—a spot in the Tour Championship brings exemptions into the Masters, U.S. Open and Open Championship along with a number of invites into the tour’s more important events. In short, if you make it to the season finale at East Lake, your next year is made .

There were four players that were outside the top 30 entering the week that earned a trip to Atlanta thanks to their performances at the BMW. Scott Stallings leads the group, his runner-up finish jumping him 34 spots to No. 12.

Other players that vaulted into the top 30 were Adam Scott, K.H. Lee and Aaron Wise.

Scott provided the drama late on Sunday afternoon. Needing a par on the 18th hole, the Aussie's tee shot finished on a hill in the rough. It left Scott standing in a bunker with his ball two feet above his feet as he went to play his second shot. His approach wasn’t great, finding a greenside bunker, yet pulled off a marvelous third to inside two feet and cleaned up what remained to secure his spot in next week’s field.

Scott, one of just two players to qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs all 16 years since its inception, moved from 46th at the start of the week to 29th. It was the second straight week that he had “played” his way into the next playoff event, after finishing T-5 at last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship go from 82nd to 46th.

MORE: Here's the prize money payout for each golfer at the BMW Championship

The final player in was Wise, who also made 4 on the closing hole when a 5 would have pushed him out.

“Yeah, it means a lot,” Wise said. “It's tough to be in the top 30 on this tour for a year. It's an honor. It takes a lot of hard work. It takes a lot of good golf. Especially the first time I made it I had a win, which I feel like really helps you. This time I did it without a win. So it's kind of even more sweet to be in that elite field without having a win this year.”

Of course, for players to jump out that means other have fallen out. Bad weeks by Tom Kim, Davis Riley and Kevin Kisner equated to their seasons coming to an end. J.J. Spaun, who entered the week at No. 30, dropped three spots at the BMW, unable to overcome a Friday 74.

Shane Lowry, who began the week at No. 37, was the first man out, a T-12 finish not enough to get him where he needed to be.

There is a golf tournament to be played next week, and once it begins all focus will be on the competition. But to most making the trip to even be in a position to compete is reward in itself, and one not lost on Theegala.

“I think the validation of the season, it's another step for me to feel like I really belong because I still don't feel like I'm really there at the top of the game,” Theegala said. “Slowly building confidence every week, whether it's a good or bad week. I feel like I've made a lot of progress. Yeah, it would mean the world to make the Tour Championship and stand along 29 of the other best golfers in the world.”

tour championship next week

It’s crunch time near the Windy City.

The second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs is the 2023 BMW Championship this week at Olympia Fields Country Club near Chicago, with the top 50 from last week’s field of 70 having advanced.

Sunday night, there will be but 30 golfers moving on to the 2023 Tour Championship, the season finale at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

All 50 players who reached the BMW earned a guaranteed spot in the 2024 signature events, but they’re also eyeing a huge potential payday next week, as the 2023 FedEx Cup champion will bag $18 million in bonus money.

Guys like Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are all in prime position to advance but there’s a few golfers right near the top-30 cutline who have to make sure they don’t slip, just as there are some who need to make a move in the upward direction.

Here’s a look at Nos. 26-30, trying to hold serve, and those in Nos. 31-35, who need a big week. The PGA Tour’s projected standings will be updated during play starting Thursday and finalized Sunday night for next week.

The Tour Championship will once again use the Starting Strokes format, with the golfer in the top slot starting at 10 under, the No. 2 guy will be at 8 under and so on. Golfers in the 26th through 30th slots next week will start at even par.

The winner takes home $18 million. Last place is good for $500,000.

The 2021 Tour Championship , the finale of the FedEx Cup Playoffs , kicks off Thursday at East Lake. You can find full Round 1 tee times for the tournament at the bottom of this post.

Notable pairings for Tour Championship Round 1

As players get ready to start the first round of the season’s final tournament, Patrick Cantlay is the man to beat. The 29-year-old rose to No. 4 in the Official World Golf Ranking, and No. 1 in the FedEx Cup standings, following his dramatic playoff victory over Bryson DeChambeau at last week’s BMW Championship.

Thanks to his top ranking, Cantlay will begin the Tour Championship at 10 under with a two-shot advantage over Tony Finau in the No. 2 position. Players will tee off based on their FedEx Cup position at East Lake. Cantlay and Finau will tee off in the final pairing at 2 p.m. ET Thursday.

The penultimate pairing might draw the most interest from golf fans. No. 3 DeChambeau, who will start at seven under, and No. 4 Jon Rahm , who starts at six under, will play together on Thursday, teeing off at 1:50 p.m.

Other notable pairings for the opening round include Cameron Smith and Justin Thomas (1:40 p.m.); Jordan Spieth and Sam Burns (1:20 p.m.); Collin Morikawa and Sungjae Im (1:10 p.m.); and Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy (12:50 p.m.).

PGA Championship 2024: Here's everyone who has qualified for the field at Valhalla (so far)

T here are two weeks until the first round of the 2024 PGA Championship gets underway at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky., and the full field for the second men’s major of the year is starting to take shape.

Sixteen past champions are expected to compete in the event. Among them is Brooks Koepka, winner a year ago at Oak Hill when he shot a closing 67 to outpace Viktor Hovland and win the Wanamaker Trophy for the third time in his career. Included as well is Justin Thomas, a winner in 2017 at Quail Hollow and 2022 at Southern Hills who will be playing in his hometown of Louisville.

We also are listing Tiger Woods as “expected” to compete. A four-time PGA winner, including memorably in a playoff over Bob May at Valhalla in 2000, Woods has not officially announced if he will be playing or not. That said, while promoting his new clothing line Sun Day Red this week, he did indicate his hope to compete in the three remaining majors.

Woods did not compete at last year’s PGA after undergoing fusion surgery on his right ankle a month earlier. He has made only two starts in PGA Tour events since the surgery: the Genesis Invitational in February, where he withdrew because of the flu during the second round, and the Masters last month, where he made his record-breaking 24th straight cut at Augusta while finishing 60th. His most recent PGA Championship start was 2022, where he made the cut at Southern Hills but withdrew after the third round.

Much of the qualifying criteria for this year’s PGA Championship officially closes on Monday, when the PGA of America is expected to reveal an official list of participants. Pending that announcement, we’ve put together an unofficial list of all those players who have earned spots based off the 14 qualifying criteria listed in the 2024 PGA Championship media guide.

Come back next week, when we’ll update the list further to have you ready for all the action at Valhalla.

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions from model that's nailed 11 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the cj cup byron nelson 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks.

jason-day-usatsi.jpg

The PGA Championship is just a few weeks away, so many of the big names in golf are sitting out of the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson, which begins Thursday at 7:45 a.m. ET. However, with golfers like Jordan Spieth and Jason Day in the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson field, there are still plenty of reasons to be excited about the TPC Craig Ranch-hosted event. Spieth is the 12-1 favorite in the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds, followed by Day (18-1), who is the defending champion. Si Woo Kim is third on the odds board at 22-1, while Sungjae Im, Alex Noren and Adam Scott are each in the next tier of 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson contenders at 25-1.

Spieth has finished second and ninth in his two professional starts at TPC Craig Ranch, so is he a golfer that you should target with your 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson bets? Before making any 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players Championship, and the RBC Heritage this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2024 field is finalized, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2024: Day, the defending champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles and barely cracks the top five. Day got off to a hot start this season when he posted three top-10 finishes in his first five tournaments, but he has struggled since then. He has finished outside the top 15 in his last five events, including a missed cut at the Texas Children's Houston Open at the end of March.

Day ranks 183rd on the PGA Tour in approach shots from more than 200 yards, which will be a shot that he has to take throughout this tournament. He is also ranked 133rd in green in regulation percentage (63.62%) and 152nd in strokes gained: approach to green (-0.380). Day is not in strong form right now, so the model is looking elsewhere with its pick to win this tournament.

Another surprise: Maverick McNealy, a 50-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The former No. 1 ranked golfer in the World Amateur Golf Ranking is still seeking his first win on the PGA Tour.

He is off to a strong start in 2024 though, making the cut in nine of his 11 events while posting a pair of top-10 finishes. McNealy finished T6 in the WM Phoenix Open in February, T13 in the Mexico Open and T9 in The Players Championship, which was the best result of his career. Despite his hot start to the year, he is still flying under the radar due to his lack of victories, making him an excellent longshot pick against a weaker field this weekend.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson picks

The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 28-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected CJ Cup Byron Nelson leaderboard , all from the model that's nailed 11 golf majors, including the last three Masters.

PGA TOUR Champions

Inspired by Aaron Rodgers, Bernhard Langer making rapid return to PGA TOUR Champions

Change Text Size

Bernhard Langer will make his PGA TOUR Champions return at next week’s Insperity Invitational presented by United Healthcare, just three months after the 66-year-old tore his left Achilles tendon.

“Statistically, they say that guys win the most tournaments from age 50 to 55 on the PGA TOUR Champions, and then they kind of drop off,” Langer said in a statement. “I’m trying to continue to prove them wrong.”

“Part of my training is doing other things, like ping-pong and other sports," Langer said. "So I played pickleball with some of my friends. My opponent lobbed me and I did a few steps back, jumped up and hit it and as I landed, I heard this loud noise and pain in my leg. I went down on the ground and at first I thought I hit something walking backwards but as I looked around there me was nothing there and I realized most likely it’s a torn Achilles tendon.

“I immediately started talking about, ‘Well, what does this mean?” he continued. "Because I had no idea, how long will I be out? Will I ever be back?”

Bernhard Langer’s remarkable recovery after Achilles injury

Langer's doctors quickly alleviated his worries, projecting a full recovery if he followed the physical therapy plan. Langer spent more than a month wearing a boot on his left foot but shed it by the end of March when he was able to stand on his own for the first time. Shortly after, he was cleared to begin working out and hitting balls.

“That was an amazing feeling, that I can actually stand again because I didn’t stood for weeks,” Langer said.

Langer found inspiration in New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who underwent the same Achilles surgery last September. Rodgers’ accelerated timeline, which allowed the star quarterback to throw a football within three months, provided Langer a roadmap.

“That lifted my spirits, hearing he was back on the field throwing the ball after eight or nine weeks," Langer said. "That encouraged me that I may do something similar."

Bernhard Langer | Swing Theory | Driver, iron, wedge

It’s a remarkable recovery for Langer, who has defied his age and expectations many times before. Langer has won more than 130 professional golf tournaments around the world throughout his career. A three-time winner on the PGA TOUR, including the 1985 and 1993 Masters, Langer also has 12 major victories on the PGA TOUR Champions. He is one of only five players to have won tournaments on all six continents where golf is played. He has played on 10 Ryder Cup teams and captained the European squad to victory in 2004.

Langer won twice last year, including the U.S. Senior Open, to pass Hale Irwin for most victories on Champions Tour. Langer has finished in the top-five in more than 40 percent of his Champions Tour starts. The ageless Langer has accumulated 28 titles after the age of 57, and 13 of his wins have come following his 60th birthday. The only player to win after turning 64, which he has done four times, Langer is also the only player in history to win every major on the senior swing.

He doesn’t intend for this injury to derail that pace: “My goal was always to be the best I can be and I think if I get back to being my best again, even at my age, I still think I’m competitive and win.”

There are only two weeks left before the next major championship in men's professional golf: the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, on May 16-19.

The LPGA Tour is taking the week off with its second major, the U.S. Women's Open presented by Ally in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, right around the corner on May 30-June 2.

Even with many of the sport's best golfers not playing this week, including red-hot Scottie Scheffler and Nelly Korda , there are still tournaments to watch.

What's next on the PGA Tour

The CJ Cup Byron Nelson When: Thursday-Sunday Where: TPC Craig Ranch, McKinney, Texas Defending champion: Jason Day Purse: $9.5 million ($1.71 million to winner)

Day's defense

With Will Zalatoris pulling out because of his back injury flaring up, the field for this week's event isn't exactly stacked, with most of the tour's top golfers taking a break before a two-week stretch that includes a signature event (Wells Fargo Championship) and major championships (PGA Championship).

Only seven of the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings and 10 of the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking are competing at TPC Craig Ranch, led by Jordan Spieth , the 20th-ranked player in the world.

Last year, Day snapped a 105-start winless streak with a 1-stroke victory over Si Woo Kim and Austin Eckroat . On Wednesday, Day committed to playing in the Olympics golf tournament Aug. 1-4 at Le Golf National outside Paris. Sixty golfers will compete in both the men's and women's tournaments; Day is currently the highest-ranked man from Australia at No. 13 in the Olympic Golf Ranking.

Day, 36, skipped the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro because of concerns about the Zika virus.

"Probably looking back on it, I wish I would've gone to Rio," Day said. "Had one of those spots and at the time we were having kids, and then obviously there was that scare, so I was kind of like a little bit freaked out about that.

"I wish I would've gone, but if I get the opportunity to go and represent the country, my country, Australia, and get to go to Paris, that would be an absolute blast, an honor to do that. To be able to call yourself an Olympian would be even better. If I get the opportunity, I'm 100% going."

Tiger on track for three more majors

Tiger Woods made the rounds on late night and morning shows this week to promote his new golf and lifestyle brand, Sun Day Red, which was made available to the public Wednesday.

Ready. Set. Hunt. Sun Day Red has officially arrived. Shop our very first collection: https://t.co/VLKSruDzyh #SunDayRed pic.twitter.com/M7kChYvKQP — SUN DAY RED (@SunDayRed) May 1, 2024

During an appearance on "Today" on Wednesday, Woods said his plan was still to play one tournament a month -- the PGA Championship in May, U.S. Open in June and The Open in July.

"I have basically the next three months," Woods said. "So I have three majors, and hopefully that will all work out."

Last month, Woods set a Masters record with his 24th consecutive made cut, which broke the previous mark he shared with Fred Couples (1983-2007) and Gary Player (1959-1982).

Woods carded 82-77 on the weekend at Augusta National and finished last among players to make the cut at 16-over 304, his worst 72-hole total in a professional event.

The 15-time major champion said he was sore after playing at the Masters and takes cold plunges "religiously" to keep playing.

The Open will be bigger

The R&A announced this week that 250,000 fans will walk through the gates of Royal Troon Golf Course in Scotland for the Open Championship on July 18-21. That will be the biggest crowd in the 10 Opens played at Royal Troon; 173,000 tickets were made available when Henrik Stenson defeated Phil Mickelson by three shots in the last one played there in 2016.

It will be the third-largest crowd in Open Championship history -- 290,000 tickets were available for the 150th Open at St. Andrews in Scotland in 2022 and 260,000 were distributed at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, England, last year.

One person who wasn't given a ticket to The Open at Royal Troon is LIV Golf CEO and commissioner Greg Norman . Norman wasn't invited to the 150th anniversary celebration at St. Andrews two years ago, and the R&A apparently hasn't made passes available for him this year, either.

Norman, who won The Open in 1986 and 1993, attended the Masters in April after buying badges on the resale market, according to his son, Greg Norman Jr.

"I don't think there's a G. Norman [on the ticket list]," R&A corporate communications director Mike Woodcock told reporters Tuesday. "I think they would have let me know if there was. So I'm not aware that he's bought a ticket so far.

"Obviously, there are tickets still available on the resale platform or hospitality. He's very welcome to look there.'"

What's next in the LIV Golf League

LIV Golf Singapore When: Friday-Sunday Where: Sentosa Golf Club (Serapong Course), Singapore Defending individual champion: Talor Gooch Defending team champion: RangeGoats GC Purse : $20 million individual ($4 million to winner); $5 million team ($3 million to winners)

Rahm looks to end drought

Two-time major championship winner Jon Rahm still hasn't won an individual title as the LIV Golf League hits the halfway point of its 14-tournament schedule. The Spanish golfer hasn't played poorly -- he's the only golfer to finish in the top 10 in each of the first six events and leads the circuit with 95 birdies.

Rahm tied for third at 16 under in Australia last week, 2 strokes behind winner Brendan Steele . He has broken par in 17 of 18 rounds this season.

Rahm is coming off a disappointing title defense at the Masters, where he tied for 45th at 9 over, 20 strokes behind winner Scheffler.

Ryder Cup reprieve?

Rahm did receive some good news last week from new DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings, who told reporters in London that he and other LIV golfers could play for the European team at the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York by maintaining their DP World Tour membership and accepting fines and suspensions.

"If we look at the eligibility criteria for 2023, I think there has been a slight misconception," Kinnings told reporters in London. "The reality is that, under the current system, if a player is European and is a member of the DP World Tour and abides by the rules in place, he is eligible."

Golfers are required to play in four DP World Tour events, outside of the majors, to maintain their memberships. They're suspended from playing in one DP World Tour event for each LIV Golf event in which they compete without a release from Kinnings.

The same rules would apply for England's Tyrrell Hatton and others. Longtime European team members Sergio Garcia , Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter were ineligible to compete in the Ryder Cup in Rome last year because they resigned their DP World Tour memberships.

Rahm could conceivably play in the Spanish Open, the Dunhill Links Championship, French Open, Andalucia Masters or Genesis Championship after the LIV Golf season ends to maintain his membership.

"It's not a loophole because that's the rules we've always had and those are the rules we are going to continue to apply," Kinnings said.

"It requires a player to work within the rules, but the truth is that those rules have been looked [at] and tested. Everything is done in a fair, reasonable and proportionate way. So there is no reason why anything needs to change. It is wrong to think Jon Rahm has written himself out of the Ryder Cup. People instantly thought we would have to change the rules, but actually we don't. If Jon follows the procedures in place, there is no reason why he would not be eligible for the 2025 Ryder Cup."

Keeping an eye on Kim

Reigning Open Championship winner Brian Harman , talking to reporters Tuesday during a preview of the 152nd Open at Royal Troon Golf Course, said he has been as curious as anyone else in watching Anthony Kim 's return to pro golf after a nearly 12-year hiatus.

Harman and Kim were teammates on the U.S. team at the 2005 Walker Cup as amateurs.

"I'm always interested when someone kind of picks up the pieces and comes back," Harman said. "It's nice to see him playing golf again. He sure was tough to beat when he was playing good. Hope he finds a little bit of that form."

Kim, who is playing as a wild card in LIV Golf individual competitions this season, hasn't finished better than 50th in a 54-man field in four starts. The 38-year-old finished 54th last week at The Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, Australia.

"I heard that his personal life is going really well from all reports," Harman said. "I haven't talked to Anthony personally in probably 12 years or so, but yeah, I've been rooting for him from the sidelines. ... He's an easy guy to pull for."

Séamus Power needs big week in Dallas to qualify for PGA Championship

Ranked 110th in the world, power needs to break into the top 100 by next week.

Séamus Power is one of those involved in potential subplots at play in the CJ Cup Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch just north of Dallas, where the Waterfordman – who skipped last week’s Zurich Classic, won by Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy – returns to the PGA Tour following a season’s best finish of tied-12th in the Heritage Classic last month.

Currently ranked 110th in the world, Power needs to break into the top 100 on the OWGR for Monday’s cut-off date if he is to earn an exemption into the US PGA Championship at Valhalla in a fortnight’s time. A win, of course, would solve all of those issues.

The PGA of America has traditionally extended exemptions to those in that bracket – and occasionally moving a number of places above – in ensuring that it has one of the strongest fields of the four Major championships.

Power, who is the sole Irish player competing in Texas, has finished in the top 20 in the Byron Nelson each of the past two years but the course is expected to play soft this time around following periods of heavy rainfall in the area with the probability that placing will be allowed on fairways through all four rounds.

Australia’s Jason Day hasn’t won since lifting the title a year ago, which ended a five-year winning drought, but has three top-10s on the PGA Tour so far this season and has worked with his coach in improving his iron play:

“In regards to my play, I haven’t been that happy with it or that pleased with it. My short game has been great. Putting has been great. Off the tee has been great. The iron play has been kind of letting me down. So just working on a few things to try and alleviate some of the stress and pressure that the iron play is putting on the rest of my game. I feel like I’ve kind of turned a corner now, which has been great,” said Day.

That win last year for the former world number one and 2015 US PGA champion ended his winless drought and brought some “relief” with it.

“Golf is a funny game, not only physically, but mentally as well. Especially where I’ve been, like I’ve been to the top of the mountain before and then to be where I was during that five-year span of like ‘do I really want to push enough? Kind of push through this and get through the pain of it all?’.

“But it was great to finally see all the work that I’ve been working on pay off ... It’s amazing how mentally tough this game can be. And I would always say to myself that if I can talk myself into a bad shot I can talk myself into a good shot. It’s human nature to feel down and guilty for yourself. I just kept on saying to myself, ‘its only a short period of time’. Ultimately it happened here last year, which was fantastic.”

Lowdown - The CJ Cup Byron Nelson

Purse: €8.9 million (€1.6m to the winner)

Where: McKinney, Texas, USA

The course: TPC Craig Ranch – 7,414 yards par 71 – is a Tom Weiskopf-designed course which makes very good use of Rowlett Creek, a stream that crosses no fewer than 14 holes on the layout. A former regular stop on the Korn Ferry Tour, the Byron Nelson – which is under new sponsorship from Korean company CJ in a 10-year deal after AT&T finished up its association – moved to the course in 2021. One of Weiskopf’s favourite holes is the drivable Par 4 14th of 330 yards which brings water into play down the left.

The field: Jordan Spieth returns to a favoured event after missing last year’s edition – won by Jason Day – due to injury. Given its new place in the schedule, a week ahead of the Wells Fargo (a signature event) and two weeks out from the US PGA, there are a large number of players skipping this week’s tour stop with no Scottie Scheffler (who is expecting the arrival of his firstborn) nor Rory McIlroy nor, indeed, anybody from the world’s top 10. KH Lee, a two-time winner in 2021 and 2022 but dethroned by Day last year, heads a very strong Korean contingent, many of them based in the Dallas area, while there is an added incentive for players looking to get into the field at Quail Hollow next week and also those currently outside the world’s top 100 who need an exemption into the PGA through that OWGR route.

Quote-Unquote: “The main think I remember is I would come with an empty hat and I would leave (with it) covered in autographs from everybody” – tour rookie Hayden Springer recalling the times he attended the Byron Nelson as a young kid, aged “five or six”. Springer earned a full card at Q-School last year and is making his debut in his hometown event.

Irish in the field: Séamus Power is in a group with Ryan Brehm and Joel Dahmen (off the 10th at 6.33pm Irish time).

Betting: Jordan Spieth – runner-up two years ago – would love to add the Byron Nelson to his CV and the Texan is the market leader at odds of 14-1 ahead of defending champion Jason Day who is rated a 16-1 shot. There is a strong Korean connection with the tournament, given how many of them live in the Dallas area, and Ben An has shown strong form of late and is worth a look at 20s ... each-way value can be found with two-time winner on the course, KH Lee, who is a 45-1 shot.

World Snooker Championship 2024 LIVE RESULTS: Bingham surrenders two frame lead as first session vs Jones ends level

  • Kieran Davies , Digital Journalist
  • Updated : 0:13, 3 May 2024

THE World Snooker Championship has reached its thrilling semi-final stage - and the first sessions in both ties have ended all square.

Bingham is a favourite to lift the Crucible crown after dumping Ronnie O'Sullivan out the tournament, but the Englishamn is currently tied 4-4 with Jak Jones in the semi.

And the other last-4 tie - Kyren Wilson 's vs David Gilbert also finished with a 4-4 scoreline in their first session.

Bingham rues simple pot

Stuart Bingham will be wondering what could have been.

With the score at 3-0, he missed a simple blue into the middle bag to then see Jones clear up and take the frame.

From that point he came back to tie the match at 3-3.

Bingham stopped the rot, going 4-3 up, but Jones won the last frame to level at the end of the session.

tour championship next week

Stuart Bingham 4-4 Jak Jones

Just as in the semi-final, they end the session tied at 4-4.

Jones wins the last frame by a score of 72-15.

Considering he was 3-0 down at one stage, it is a brilliant performance by Jak Jones.

Stuart Bingham 4-3 Jak Jones

Leading the frame 34-15, Jones has a big chance here.

The balls are all there for him if he can control the cue ball well.

Jak Jones has a big chance to end the first session level.

Jones misses a long blue and gifts Bingham a chance.

He clears up to take the frame 82-44.

Bingham needed that frame to stop the rot.

tour championship next week

Stuart Bingham 3-3 Jak Jones

Bingham is playing some very loose shots at the moment.

Jones currently leads the frame 44-1.

There are still plenty of points on the table and Jones misses a blue that has let his opponent in.

Massive chance for Bingham to change his fortunes in this match.

What a different match Stuart Bingham finds himself in now.

Jones is at the table and on a break of 43.

Everything he strikes at the moment is going into the heart of the pocket.

Jak Jones takes the frame 69-35 to draw level.

Stuart Bingham will be rueing that simple blue he missed into the middle pocket to go 4-0 up now.

The game has been turned on its head since that miss.

Stuart Bingham 3-2 Jak Jones

Bingham is looking a little out of sorts at the moment.

The colours are clustered at the top of the table, making it relatively easy for snookers with a good cue ball.

Jones leaves Bingham in a snooker, while he gets out of it, he has left the last red over the middle pocket for his opponent.

He pots the red, followed by the black, putting him 64-35 up with just the colours remaining.

Bingham takes on a pot and leaves Jones with a big chance.

The Welshman is now 39-35 up and there are plenty of reds in play.

If Jones can control the cue ball well, this could be a frame-winning visit.

tour championship next week

Jones is at the table but is having to work hard for points.

He has amassed a break of 16 but there does not seem an obvious red on.

While he could take on the pot, the risk/reward of missing does not seem worth it.

Jak Jones throws caution to the wind and pots but the cue ball nestles against the pink and he will struggle for a colour now.

Jones takes on a long pot and red rattles and comes back out.

He tried to make sure he did not leave anything in case he missed but ironically it is the ball he missed that comes back out and offers Bingham a shot into the middle pocket.

Bingham is still at the table and currently has a break of 35.

Despite going into the pack, nothing came out so there is nothing on after his next colour.

Jones takes the frame 67-22 to continue his comeback.

Bingham could not find the snookers he needed and Jones pots the final red to take the frame.

He has really turned things around now and the pressure is back on Bingham having lost the last two frames either side of the interval.

Stuart Bingham 3-1 Jak Jones

A great break of 66 puts Jones in a great position.

With one red remaining on the table, Bingham decides not to concede the frame as there is a chance of getting snookers where the balls are positioned.

Jones goes for a long pot to end the frame but it rattles in the jaw.

Jones makes a great pot to give himself a chance in the frame.

He gets a break of 40 to take the lead in the frame.

The Welshman takes a plant on and gets it spot on.

Sitting perfectly on the pink, this is a chance for Jones to win another frame.

tour championship next week

Bingham is at the table and has a glimpse of a break.

The problem was always going to be opening the pack up after taking the free reds.

It doesn't work out and he has to play safe on the black, with the cue ball ending up at the top of the table.

Despite the error, Bingham scores 20.

With another four frames left in this session, this match really could be anyone's guess how it finishes.

Jones should take some confidence from finally get a frame on the board before the interval.

Bingham will be looking for an immediate reply after he lost a frame that he really should have won.

Some fantastic potting by Jones sees him come back to 48-52.

All he needs is the black and he sinks it to steal the frame.

As they head into the mid-session interval, that frame could prove pivotal to Jak Jones in this match.

Stuart Bingham 3-0 Jak Jones

Bingham leads the frame 52-21.

He gives Jones a chance, he needs the pink and the six remaining colours to take the frame.

The Welshman pots the pink and has a real chance of a clearance now.

Jones takes on a long pot but is way off the mark.

The white stays down the right end of the table for Bingham and he has a chance to put a break together.

Currently on a break of 31, to win the frame at this visit would take some great snooker from the Englishman.

tour championship next week

This is proving to be the longest frame of the match so far.

Jones leads 15-5 but the majority of the reds are still are on the table.

Both players are leaving the cue ball high up the table, trying to tempt each other into taking on risky long pots.

This is a tight, tense frame already.

Both players are missing pots they would normally pot in their sleep.

As it stands, Bingham has his opponent against the ropes, he knows how much a difference winning this final frame before the mid-session interval could be in this match.

Jones passes up another chance to get himself into this match.

He only manages to muster a break of 9 before he is looking to leave the cue ball safe at the baulk cushion.

Both players now are exchanging safety shots, not looking to give their opponent a chance.

Bingham takes the frame 78-36.

Jones really needs to get a frame on the board here.

If Stuart Bingham can take the final frame before the interval, there is a long way to come back for Jak Jones.

Stuart Bingham 2-0 Jak Jones

Neither player seems to want to take this frame by the scruff of the neck.

Jones misses another simple pot and this a real chance now for Bingham.

He leads the frame 49-36 but some poor position forces him into playing a snooker on the final available red, leaving the cue ball behind the pink.

tour championship next week

Stuart Bingham manages to add 15 to his score but will feel it was an opportunity missed.

He leads the frame 35-17 and has managed to leave the cue ball in what seems a safe position.

Jones plays a great two-ball plant to pot and has given himself a real chance to get into a frame-winning position.
