Buying guide for best portable tvs.

Updated May 2022

Your smartphone is great for such tasks as emailing, doom-scrolling news, and keeping up with your social media apps, but it’s not really the best device for watching TV and movies. And if you’re interested in pulling in local over-the-air broadcasts, good luck doing that with a phone.

For the best TV experience that you can take anywhere, you want a portable TV.

With screens averaging 10 to 12 inches, portable TVs are perfect to take camping, to the beach, on your commute, or anywhere in your home. Most have lots of inputs, so you can plug in everything from a gaming system to a streaming stick. Try that with a phone.

travel tv vcr

Key considerations

The size of a portable TV is based on screen size. Portable TVs start at 6 inches and go up to around 20 inches, with the average in the 10- to 12-inch range.

A smaller screen size gives you a lighter portable TV that’s easier to carry around. A larger screen offers better image quality and is easier to watch in general. When shopping for a portable TV, decide which factor is more important to you and try to find a balance between portability and watchability that works for you.

Because these TVs are meant to be portable, how they’re powered can be a major consideration. Portable TVs contain a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that can be recharged with an AC charging cord (through a wall socket) or a DC cord (through a car cigarette lighter). Some portable TVs can be powered via both, providing the most convenience.

One big way that these TVs differ from each other is how long they can operate on a battery charge. Some portable TVs can play for 5 hours on a single charge, while others can barely keep going past the 60-minute mark. The average run-time per charge is around 3 hours. While those TVs that run for less time on a charge aren’t inherently bad, just be aware that such TVs will spend more time charging and less time playing your favorite shows than other options.

Image quality

Portability may be a key consideration when choosing one of these TVs, but they still need to be watchable.

Resolution: Image quality is an important factor when purchasing a portable TV. While some portable TVs only feature standard resolution, most offer HD resolution of 720p or 1080p.

Ratio: Some portable TVs also feature 16:9 ratio in addition to the usual 4:3, so you can view widescreen media without resorting to something like letterboxing.

Screen: While LCD screens are still the norm for portable TVs, LEDs are becoming more common. LED screens are slimmer than LCD screens and provide a better, clearer picture.

Format: Finally, note the video and picture formats the portable TV supports. Some of these TVs support a wide range of video formats, including MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG3, MPEG4, Motion JPEG, DIVX, and more. If you want to view images on your portable TV (such as with an SD memory card ), be sure it can handle picture formats like JPEG, BMP, and PNG.

Audio quality

Sound quality is also an important factor when purchasing a portable TV. Built-in speakers are standard, though they vary in quality. While some TVs only include a single speaker, others have two built-in speakers for stereo sound.

A portable TV should also include an audio jack for use with headphones , which offers a better audio experience if you’re watching alone.

Also, be sure you know what audio formats, such as MP3 or WMA, are supported by the TV.

Tuner/antenna

A portable TV typically has a built-in ATSC and/or NTSC tuner for pulling in over-the-air stations. These TVs also include an auto-scan feature for finding such stations. Over-the-air stations are free, but you need to be in range to receive them. While this won’t be a problem in an urban area, the stations you’ll be able to pick up while camping in the woods will probably be limited.

A telescoping antenna can help. While some portable TVs only have a built-in antenna, some include a traditional telescoping antenna that you can swivel around for better signal reception.

For those times when you want to listen to the radio, some portable TVs include a built-in FM tuner.

Inputs are standard on portable TVs, allowing you to greatly expand what you can do with them. Some of the more common input types include S-Video, VGA, USB, AV inputs, HDMI, and microSD/SD cards. Inputs are an especially important feature if you’re in an area with limited over-the-air stations. These inputs vary from one TV to another; the more inputs available, the more possibilities there are. With the proper inputs, you can plug a variety of devices into your TV, including DVD players , gaming systems, streaming sticks , and even media storage cards stuffed with movies or TV shows.

All portable TVs include some type of stand so you can set the TV on a flat surface to watch it. The stand usually takes one of two forms: a physical base that attaches to the bottom of the TV (similar to larger TVs) or a kickstand on the back so you can prop the TV up like a tablet .

Some portable TVs include a remote, so you can easily operate the TV from a distance. While some remotes are fairly limited, others are full-featured devices capable of controlling all aspects of the portable TV.

The first portable TVs were designed by Panasonic and Sinclair Research in the 1970s and 1980s. These pocket-size TVs had tiny CRT screens.

Portable TV prices

Inexpensive: Portable TVs start at around $80 to $100. In this range, you’ll find more compact LCD screens, usually under 10 inches. Portable TVs in this range typically feature fewer inputs than more expensive options and have a shorter run time of around a couple of hours per battery charge.

Mid-range: Most portable TVs are in the $100 to $140 range. Here, you can typically find screen sizes in the 10- to 12-inch range. These are usually LCD screens, although some smaller LED screens can be found in this range. These portable TVs run a few hours on a charge and have a fairly good assortment of inputs and media card slots.

Expensive: Portable TVs that cost $140 to $170 tend to be larger (14 inches or more) and are more apt to include a higher-quality LED screen. You can find the greatest assortment of inputs here, in addition to battery run times that can extend up to 5 hours between charges.

  • Choose the right size screen. When buying a portable TV based on size, start by figuring out the number of people who will be watching it at any given time. If it’s just you, something like a 6-inch or 7-inch screen will do. If several people will be watching at a time, you’re better off going with a larger screen.
  • Mount the TV on the wall. Before you rule out mounting a portable TV on the wall, note that a mounting bracket for these TVs is fairly inexpensive given their size and weight. For larger portable TVs in particular, wall-mounting might be a viable and inexpensive option.
  • Check for certification. For the safest portable TV, go with one that features a certification from an organization such as Intertek’s ETL Mark , which verifies that devices meet a specific set of safety standards.
  • Make sure the TV will work in other countries. If you’re buying a portable TV to take on a trip to a foreign country, check with the manufacturer or seller first to find out if the TV can receive signals in that country.
  • Check the inputs. Before buying a portable TV, consider what input devices you plan to use with it. Do you use streaming devices? Will you use the TV with a DVD player or to play media on an SD card? Pay special attention to the inputs and buy a TV according to your needs.
  • Check for good customer service. Some of these portable TVs include robust customer service, while others leave you pretty much to yourself to figure issues out. Check online customer reviews to get an idea of the help available should problems arise.

travel tv vcr

Q. Do these portable TVs work with WiFi?

A. Most portable TVs do not work with WiFi on their own. However, if your TV has an HDMI port, you’ll be able to use streaming devices with it and they’ll be WiFi-compatible.

Q. How heavy is a portable TV?

A. Due to their small size, portable TVs aren’t very heavy. Still, they can range from 2 to 5 pounds or more. If weight is a major consideration for you, look for a TV that has a smaller screen.

Q. What’s the difference between NTSC and ATSC tuners?

A. Some portable TVs only have an ATSC tuner, while others have both ATSC and NTSC tuners. While both tuner types receive over-the-air signals, NTSC is an older analog standard that has largely been co-opted by digital ATSC. An ATSC tuner delivers better audio and video quality in addition to supporting formats such as widescreen. If you want a portable TV capable of pulling in the greatest number of signals, go with one that includes both types of tuners.

How to Connect a VCR to Your New TV

Want to dust off some old VHS tapes or play some Wii? You might need an RCA-to-HDMI adapter.

travel tv vcr

An analog to HDMI converter for your TV starts at around $7

how-to-tech-tips-logo-badge.png

Want to watch some old family movies on VCR? Having a craving for some GoldenEye on N64? Maybe you found some LaserDiscs at a yard sale -- they may look like huge CDs, but they're analog! Then you notice that your shiny new TV doesn't have the right inputs.

Many modern TVs have, at best, one analog input. Often they don't have any. Fortunately, there are a ton of analog RCA-to- HDMI converters on the market, and they're extremely cheap. The most expensive one I tested, which includes the fancy-for-the-90s S-Video connection, was only $40.

Here's a look at what you need to get converting composite to HDMI.

Who this is for

analog-rca-to-hdmi-7-of-7

These adapters are solely to connect and play older, analog video sources to your modern TV. With one exception which I'll discuss in a moment, that means the yellow, red, and white RCA connectors . So that means VCRs, the Nintendo Wii, older game consoles like the  GameCube , LaserDisc and many camcorders. Anything with composite video outputs .

The devices below convert these analog signals to HDMI, the ubiquitous connection on all modern TVs. These converters won't let you record those signals, only watch them on your TV. Even if your laptop has an HDMI connection, that is an output only. It cannot accept video to record. There are devices that do that , but that's not these.

These are not component video converters , the red, green and blue connections found mostly on DVD players and early Blu-ray players . However, there aren't many products where you'd need to convert component to HDMI. DVDs, for instance, are playable on Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray players. Component-to-HDMI converters exist, but I didn't test them for this guide since they're more niche.

These are also not HDMI to RCA, aka taking an HD source to connect to an older, analog TV. Those exist but aren't what I'm testing here, nor will these work for that.

analog-rca-to-hdmi-6-of-7

All the models I tested could convert to 720p or 1080p, though you're unlikely to see a difference.

All of these adapters will upconvert the standard definition signals to HD, but as I'll discuss, don't get your hopes up. Your TV will do this automatically , and old video gear is never going to look as good as any modern video source. VHS, for example, has a resolution that is, at best, roughly 320x480. Your 4K TV has 3,840 x 2,160, or nearly 54 times  VHS. Unlike what movies and TV shows tell you, you can't just "enhance" this to look like HD or 4K. Your nostalgia is going to remember far better picture quality than the reality of what we had pre-HD. Vastly smaller TVs helped reinforced this impression as well.

In addition to composite I also tested one model that has S-Video . S-Video was found on LaserDisc players and a handful of other products. It was better than composite, worse than component. Unless you're sure you need S-Video, composite will work just fine.

RCA-to-HDMI converters

I was able to find an extremely dusty and slightly rusty VCR hiding in the back of my garage. It even still had the Circuit City Open Box sticker from when I first bought it. I also had, I have no idea why, two paper bags full of VHS tapes that somehow made the trip from college in upstate New York, through two apartments in LA, and finally, totally forgotten in the back of a closet in my house. This turns out to be surprisingly relevant, as you'll soon see.

cc-open-box-sticker

I should clean my garage more often.

A few important things to mention. Old video gear was 4x3, aka squarish. To watch on a modern 16x9 TV you'll need to find the aspect ratio adjustment on your TV. This might be on the remote, or it might be in the menu. Depending on the age of your TV, it might only let you adjust the aspect ratio with 720p and not 1080, but all the converters I tested have that resolution adjustment. One converter I tested, the Azduou, has an aspect ratio button. I doubt you'll need it, though.

None of these do a particularly good job of  deinterlacing  -- taking out the jaggies and black lines -- but that's the least of your problems with old video content. It's never going to look as good as HD.

There are countless more options available online. Chances are, if it looks the same as one you see here, it almost certainly is.

travel tv vcr

Tixilinbi Male RCA to HDMI Cable Converter

Best rca to hdmi converter.

The Tixilinbi comes with a removable HDMI cable and non-removable male RCA cables. This makes it overall a better solution for most people, since it comes with analog cables. It's powered via Micro-USB. A cable for which is included, but the wall adapter isn't. That's common with these. You can likely connect it to the USB connection on your TV for power.

Like the Ablewe, there are countless converters identical to the Tixilinbi, which are almost certainly all the same.

The Tixilinbi just barely edges out the Ablewe as the pick for most people. It doesn't let you see an image during fast-forward and rewind, but otherwise doesn't work any worse than any of the others. While the non-detachable analog cables are more limiting in terms of placement, you could just connect a longer HDMI cable if the adapter doesn't reach.

Axduou 2 AV to HDMI Converter

Best upgrade option.

If you want to connect two composite video devices, say an N64 and a GameCube, the Axduou lets you switch between them. It doesn't come with RCA cables, but it does come with HDMI, Micro-USB, and a USB power adapter, the only one to do so. That latter isn't a huge deal since you almost certainly have a bunch lying around, and most TVs have USB on the back anyway.

To be honest, this is the one I'd buy. Yes, it's nearly twice as expensive as the Tixilinbi, but the metal chassis feels seriously overbuilt compared to the competition, and having an extra input is never a bad thing. It also lets you see an image during fast-forward and rewind. It's probably overkill for most people, though.

My only complaint is the lack of RCA cables, but you might already have those. If not, they're cheap. Monoprice has some for about $1 a foot .

travel tv vcr

Ablewe RCA to HDMI Converter

Cheaper, but no cables.

The Ablewe is representative of myriad identical RCA to HDMI converters on Amazon. It's one of the first ones that comes up if you search for RCA-to-HDMI adapter. It's a simple box with AV connections on one side, and HDMI on the other. It comes in a bag labeled "Deluxe Computer Cable," which isn't entirely inaccurate. It's powered by Mini-USB, the only cable provided. So it lacks the male-to-male analog cables you'll need to connect the device to your VCR or TV. It does, however, let you see an image during fast-forward and rewind.

Like the others here, it works well enough. However, the lack of cables is an issue when there are choices here that come with everything you need. If you have cables already, and would like to be able to see what you're fast-forwarding/rewinding through, this is the better budget option than the Tixilinbi.

travel tv vcr

BTS Video RCA to HDMI Converter

All one cable.

The BTS Video dongle had no branding on its box, and the adapter itself said "Wiistar," which is a different brand. The BTS/Wiistar is the smallest I tested, and cheapest. It's basically a chunky HDMI cable that splits into yellow, red, and white male RCA cables. It comes with the Micro-USB needed to power it.

While I like the simplicity of the "one" cable design, this ends up being more trouble than it's worth. The entire cable is only 2 feet, which I imagine for most people is far too short to easily connect. If you have your sources on shelves beneath the TV, for example, this won't reach. It might not even extend far enough to the side, depending on your TV.

It doesn't show an image during fast-forward or rewind, and overall the image is a little softer. It does technically work, and was $7 as of this writing. So if you're on a really tight budget, have a small setup, or a set of long female-to-male RCA cables handy, it's OK.

travel tv vcr

Easycel RCA and S-Video to HDMI Converter

Composite and s-video.

It's doubtful you'll need to spend the whopping $40 on the Easycel, but it gives you an option for S-Video if you're so inclined. This connection, which is four pins and looks like the cable you'd use to connect a mouse or keyboard, was common in higher-end video sources in the late '80s, '90s, and very early 2000s before being replaced by component and, eventually, HDMI. However, don't expect magic. This is still standard-definition video we're talking about. The phrase "lipstick on a pig" comes to mind.

It comes with its own small power adapter, S-Video and male-to-male composite cables, but not HDMI. It's the only converter I tested that has a separate analog audio output. It doesn't let you see an image during fast-forward and rewind, though.

Striking gold. No… striking diamonds!

During testing, this project took an unexpected turn. On an unlabeled VHS I found a short clip of my childhood dog, Kodi. I didn't think any video of him existed. He died long before cell phones or even widespread digital photography, so I only have some transferred-film photos and my own memories. What an unexpected joy. What an absolute gift.

Currently watching 22-year-old 8mm recordings on VHS via a 22 year old VCR connected via HDMI converter dongle to a 4K laser projector on a 100-inch screen. Technology never dies. It just gets extremely dusty and slightly rusted in my garage. — Geoffrey Morrison (@TechWriterGeoff) February 20, 2022

Then it got even wilder. I tweeted about finding Kodi's video and one of my followers said she was digitizing some old VHS tapes that night as well. She sent me the link… and it was a long interview of a friend-of-a-friend who passed a few years ago. The internet is a small place. I sent my friend the link and he was beyond delighted to see his old pal again.

Which is to say, these converters are absolutely worth their price. Whether it's for a burst of nostalgia endorphins from a favorite old game, or seeing someone you loved one more time. If you've got the old gear, definitely worth connecting them up. Even if just for a night.

How to Hook Up a VCR to a TV

Last Updated: June 7, 2024

This article was co-authored by wikiHow staff writer, Jack Lloyd . Jack Lloyd is a Technology Writer and Editor for wikiHow. This wikiHow teaches you how to connect a VHS player to your TV. While VHS players are considered obsolete technology at this point, you can still hook a VHS player up to most TVs using either a coaxial cable or a set of AV cables. If your VCR doesn't support coaxial cables and your TV doesn't support AV, you can also use an RCA-to-HDMI adapter to connect using AV cables and an HDMI cable.

Connecting a VHS Player to a TV

Unplug your TV. If your VCR and TV have coaxial ports, plug one end of the coaxial cable into the VCR and the other end into your TV. If your TV has AV inputs, use an AV cable. Plug the red, white, and yellow cables into the corresponding ports on your VCR and TV.

Using a Coaxial Cable

Step 1 Check both your TV and your VHS player for a coaxial port.

  • Both your TV and your VHS player must have a coaxial port in order for this method to work.
  • If your TV or your VHS player lacks a coax port, you can still use AV cables to connect your VHS player.

Step 2 Make sure that you have a coaxial cable.

  • If you don't have a coaxial cable, you can buy one online or in a tech department store.

Step 3 Turn off and unplug your TV.

  • You can usually tighten the coaxial cable in order to secure its connection to the VHS player.
  • The coaxial port on your VHS will usually have something like "TO TV" written below it.

Step 5 Attach the other end of the coaxial cable to the TV.

  • Be sure to tighten this connection if possible.

Step 6 Connect your VCR to a power outlet.

  • If your VCR's power cable isn't permanently connected to the VCR, you'll first need to attach the power cable to the VCR's power input.

Step 7 Plug back in your TV and turn it on.

  • For some VCRs, you will need to set the channel on the VCR itself before you can play a tape.
  • To play a VHS tape with your VCR, just insert the tape and press "Play" to begin playing it.

Using AV Cables

Step 1 Make sure that you have AV cables.

  • The red and white cables are for audio.
  • The yellow cable is for video.
  • If you don't have AV cables, you can buy them online or in a tech department store—they're quite cheap.

Step 2 Check your TV for AV inputs.

  • If you can find red and white inputs but no yellow input, look for a green input with the word "Video" nearby. If your TV has one of these, you can still use AV cables.
  • If your TV doesn't have AV inputs, you will need to buy an RCA-to-HDMI ( not HDMI-to-RCA) adapter and an HDMI cable .

Step 3 Turn off and unplug your TV.

  • Some VCRs only support mono audio, meaning that you'll only have a white or a red port at the back of the VCR. Just leave the non-supported cable unplugged.

Step 5 Plug the other ends of the AV cables into the TV.

  • Make sure that all three of the cables are in the same input area, row, or column. Input areas are usually numbered.
  • If you're using an RCA-to-HDMI adapter, do the following: Plug the AV cables into the colored ports on the adapter, plug one end of the HDMI cable into the RCA adapter, plug the other end into your TV's HDMI port, and plug the adapter's power cable into a power source (e.g., a wall socket).

Step 6 Connect your VCR to a power outlet.

How to Connect a VCR to a Modern TV

By Mark from RetroTechLab.com

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

  • VCRs can still be connected to new TVs to play back tape content and get nostalgic.
  • You’ll need adapter cables to convert the analog outputs to modern digital HDMI inputs.
  • Composite and S-Video offer decent quality, while SCART or Component look great if supported.
  • Match your TV’s aspect ratio setting to avoid stretched or squished video playback.
  • Consider a CRT TV or video scaler if your display lacks composite/analog inputs.
  • Clean VCR heads, demagnetize, and clean tapes to optimize playback quality.
  • Some flatscreen TVs may still have composite inputs, check before assuming adapters are needed.

Introduction

Long-time videophiles may still have treasured VHS, Betamax, or other analog video tape collections they want to watch in their original glory. While VCRs and their magnetic tapes seem antiquated compared to streaming media and digital formats, enjoying this retro technology in the modern age is still possible with the right gear.

This guide will cover how to connect legacy VCRs with analog outputs to the HDMI inputs found on most flatscreen HDTVs today. With some simple adapter cables, your classic video content can live on. We’ll also look at setup tips for optimizing video quality when viewing analog VHS or Betamax tapes on a potentially less forgiving digital display.

Bringing analog video sources into the digital age takes a bit of work, but nostalgia demands it. Follow along to re-live your classic video collection despite the generational divide!

Video Terminology

Before getting into specific connection methods, let’s clarify some key video terms that will come up:

Analog Video – The original video signal output by older devices like VCRs, stored and transmitted as a continuously varying electrical waveform. Provides less pristine quality than digital but allows for degradation vs all-or-nothing digital. Still powers legacy video tech.

Digital Video – Modern video signals represented by discrete binary numeric values rather than an analog waveform. Allows perfect quality copies and noise reduction but doesn’t degrade gracefully. Required for HDTVs.

Composite Video – Basic analog video transmission using a single RCA cable containing the shared video information. Low quality but very compatible. Often paired with RCA audio cables.

S-Video – A step up from composite video, it separates the luminance (black & white) and color signals onto two separate wires for clearer image. Uses a round mini-DIN connector.

Component – More advanced analog video using multiple RCA cables to keep red, green, and blue video signals separate. Highest analog quality.

HDMI – Modern digital audio/video interconnect using high speed binary data for lossless combining of stereo audio and uncompressed ultra HD video. Carries HDCP copy protection signals.

CRT TV – Classic “cathode ray tube” analog televisions using electron beams, phosphors, and magnetic deflection to display images. Heavier and lower resolution than modern flatscreens but natively display legacy video sources.

HDTV – Modern high definition televisions using LCD, LED, OLED, or other flat panel technologies to natively display digital audio/video. Superior image but requires conversion of analog sources.

With this context covered, let’s move on to making the physical connections.

Key Connection Methods

Connecting a VCR to an HDTV will require converting the analog outputs like composite video and RCA audio to modern digital inputs such as HDMI. Here are the main options:

Composite to HDMI Adapter – This simple solution uses an RCA to HDMI adapter cable to go from the VCR’s single analog composite video and stereo audio RCA outputs into the TV’s HDMI input. Provides good quality with minimal effort.

S-Video to HDMI Converter – Step up to the less compressed S-Video output from the VCR for better clarity, though TV must also support S-Video input. A dedicated converter boxes the signal to HDMI.

Component to HDMI Converter – Highest analog quality by keeping video signals separate, but TV must have component inputs. A powered converter handles the channel mixing and HDMI encoding.

HDMI Capture Card – Advanced converters act as an external USB capture device for the PC. Records analog input to digital files for editing and archival. Useful for capture or live streaming. More steps.

CRT TV Connection – Analog CRT TVs natively work with composite/S-Video outputs. No conversion needed, just connect cables directly. Ideal for VHS nostalgia but CRT TVs are bulky.

AV Receiver – If you have a vintage AV receiver with analog inputs and HDMI output, this can cleanly do the adaptation between TV and VCR as the middleman.

No single solution is best for all scenarios. Pick based on your TV capabilities, desired video fidelity, and budget constraints. The good news is all these options are quite affordable, with basic adapters starting under $10.

Connection Advice by TV Type

Here is some advice on connecting your VCR based on whether you have a CRT TV vs a modern flatscreen:

Analog CRT TV

Direct Composite – Since CRT TVs have native composite inputs, simplest is to just use composite video + RCA stereo audio cables directly between the VCR and TV inputs. Enjoy native analog quality!

S-Video – For enhanced clarity, utilize S-Video connections if available on both devices, plus RCA audio. Though composite on a CRT still looks great.

Aspect Ratio – Set the CRT’s aspect mode to Normal/4:3 to avoid distortion with the VCR’s standard definition signal.

No Scaling Issues – CRT TV’s analog input means no digital scaling or lag. Enjoy perfect nostalgic playback.

HDTV without Analog Inputs

HDMI Adapters – Lacking analog inputs, you’ll absolutely need some form of RCA/S-Video/Component to HDMI adapter or converter box to digitize the signal for the HDTV.

Preview Scaling – Try to preview the converted analog signal before display to ensure the adapter’s scaling looks acceptable. Distortion can happen.

Configure TV Mode – Most HDTVs have a video setting to switch to a 4:3 or “Normal” mode for proper SD analog source display. Avoid “stretch”.

Consider CRT – If having to convert signals anyway, may be worth seeking out a free/cheap CRT TV for direct vintage playback.

HDTV with Analog Inputs

Try Direct Connection – You may be able to directly use composite, S-Video, or component cables since some HDTVs still support these legacy inputs!

Use Adapters – If quality is lacking, add simple/powered adapters to tailor the signal, but direct connection avoids any analog to digital conversion issues.

Disable Processing – Most HDTVs allow you to disable all digital processing to reduce lag and distortion when viewing analog sources.

Adjust Carefully – Do minor TV tweaks like brightness, contrast, and sharpness to bring out best analog playback rather than exaggerating flaws.

Now let’s move on to some specific tips once you have cables connected between the two devices.

Playback and Display Tips

Once connected, there are some settings and adjustments you can make to optimize playback:

  • Clean Connections  – Use high quality gold-tipped cables and clean all connections with alcohol to avoid any analog video noise or signal issues.
  • Sharpen VCR Heads  – Use a head cleaning tape and demagnetizer tool to get the best signal from the VCR prior to viewing.
  • Match Aspect Ratio  – Most HDTVs have a 4:3 mode to match the standard def VCR and avoid distortion. May be called “Normal” or “Full” mode.
  • Adjust Display Settings  – Do minor tweaks to the TV like brightness, contrast, and sharpness to compensate for the analog signal but don’t overdo it.
  • Disable Enhancements  – Turn off any additional video processing on the TV like noise reduction, edge enhancement, or motion smoothing to reduce lag and distortion.
  • Try an A/V Receiver  – If using an older stereo system, route cables through it instead of directly to the TV – it was designed for analog video and can help with processing.
  • Consider a CRT  – For analog purists, connecting directly to an old CRT television still provides the most accurate vintage VHS viewing experience.
  • Have Patience  – Analog media varies in quality so expect some tracking lines, noise, and degradation – solved in part by cleaning and demagnetizing.

With high quality cables and some minor adjustments, even basic composite video output can provide a pleasant dose of home movie nostalgia on a modern flatscreen. Just temper expectations relative to crystal clear digital quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some common questions about connecting VCRs to modern televisions:

What is the simplest cable to use?

Composite video + RCA stereo audio is the most basic but compatible analog connection. HDMI adapters convert this to work on new TVs.

Do I need a special adapter or upscaler?

If your HDTV lacks analog ports, then yes you do need a converter like a composite to HDMI adapter. These are inexpensive. Upscalers provide higher-end digital conversion.

What about S-Video or component?

These options provide better analog quality than composite, but your TV must already have those inputs. Converters for HDMI are also available.

Will a CRT TV work better?

Yes, analog CRTs natively work with VCR signals so you can directly connect via composite or S-Video and enjoy perfect quality. No digital conversion needed.

What if I only see black & white or static?

Make sure cables are fully seated, ensure you are using the TV’s correct input, and try new/clean cables. The VCR heads may also need cleaned. Fuzzy video likely just needs tracking adjusted.

How can I improve playback quality?

Using the VCR’s tracking adjustment, cleaning the video heads, demagnetizing tapes, and using high quality cables can all help maximize video fidelity. Matching aspect ratio modes avoids distortion.

Do I need an HDCP stripper?

Some VCRs incorrectly detect modern TVs as HDCP compliant, causing blocking. HDCP strippers remove this copy protection to restore the video signal at an affordable price.

Despite fading into obscurity after the rise of DVDs, connecting a VCR to enjoy retro home videos is still very achievable in the modern age with a few simple adapters and cables. Analog media brings an intangible nostalgia no digital format can quite reproduce.

By using solutions like composite to HDMI converters, your VHS, Betamax, or other analog tapes can live on. With some adjustments to optimize this analog/digital mismatch, re-living classic videos just like decades prior is possible. Though the mediums change, our memories persist thanks to a bit of retro technology.

History of Omsk

Foundation of omsk.

The need to build a Russian fortress on the banks of the Irtysh at the mouth of the Om River arose in connection with the steppe nomadic peoples. In particular, with the Oirats, whose tribes in the first decades of the 17th century began to appear within the borders of the Russian state being under the onslaught of their external enemies and as a result of internal civil strife. However, various foreign and domestic political problems of Russia hindered the development and defense of the South Siberian borders.

The situation changed only at the beginning of the 18th century, when the Russian conquest of Siberia intensified. Since Peter I paid great attention to geographical research in the south, the expeditions of that time combined socio-political tasks and tasks of scientific research.

One of such expeditions was led by the Russian military and statesman, associate of Peter I, Major General Ivan Bukhgolts. The goals of the expedition, numbering about 3,000 people, were to search for ore and gold deposits, the discovery of trade routes to India and China, as well as the construction of towns on the Irtysh River.

The expedition left Tobolsk to the south along the Irtysh in July 1715. In the spring of 1716, after a conflict with the Dzungars in the north of today’s Kazakhstan, the remnants of the expedition (about 700 people) withdrew to the mouth of the Om River, where they laid a new fortress named Omsky ostrog (fortified settlement).

According to the census of 1725, 992 people lived in the fortress, in 1742 - 1,092 people. From the first years of its existence, it served as a place of exile for prisoners. After serving hard labor and imprisonment, a lot of them stayed in Omsk for permanent residence.

More Historical Facts…

Omsk in the second half of the 18th century

The ethnic composition of the region’s population was formed in the process of settling the territory. Russians, Germans, Ukrainians, Poles, Belarusians, and representatives of many other nationalities were sent here to serve or were exiled. The indigenous people of the region were the Siberian Tatars and Kazakhs, who switched to a sedentary lifestyle.

The foundation of the second Omsk fortress took place in 1762. The first fortress, although it occupied a favorable geographical position, was wooden and, by the middle of the 18th century, it was dilapidated. In 1765, new stone fortifications were constructed. The first stone structure of the fortress was the Resurrection Military Cathedral, built in 1773 and preserved to this day.

In the end of the 18th century, the Omsk fortress was one of the largest structures in the eastern part of the Russian Empire, its area was more than 30 hectares. In 1782, it was transformed into a town named Omsk within the Tobolsk Governorate. In 1785, the coat of arms of Omsk was approved.

Omsk became the center of management of the Siberian transport routes and the Siberian Cossack army, which not only guarded the South Siberian borders, but also made a huge contribution to the economic development of the steppe expanses of Kazakhstan, the annexation of Central Asia to the Russian Empire.

Omsk in the 19th century

The fire of 1819 destroyed almost half of the town including the archive and the magistrate of Omsk with all the first archival documents. Therefore information about the life of Omsk in the 18th - early 19th centuries is scarce and fragmentary. In 1825, the population of the town was about 9,000 people.

In 1829, the town’s development plan was approved. It was made by the famous Petersburg architect V.I. Geste, who took the city of St. Petersburg as a model with its wide avenues, huge neighborhoods, fountains, cast-iron bridges, and an abundance of green spaces.

The composition of the population of Omsk was not quite usual. In the middle of the 19th century, since Omsk was the center of the military and civil administration, the proportion of the military in the local population reached about 60%.

Fyodor Dostoevsky (one of the greatest psychological novelists in world literature), who served a term of hard labor in the Omsk prison in 1850-1854, in a letter to his brother gave Omsk the following description: “Omsk is a disgusting town. There are almost no trees. In summer, heat and wind with sand, in winter, a snowstorm. I have not seen nature. The town is dirty, military and highly depraved.”

By the second half of the 19th century, Omsk in its development outstripped many steppe towns and became not only an administrative, but also a commercial and industrial center. In 1861, in Omsk, there were 2,122 houses (31 stone houses), 34 factories and plants, about 20 thousand residents.

In 1892, the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway began, which gave a new impetus to the economy of Siberian towns and positively influenced Omsk. The development of the Trans-Siberian Railway caused an increase in the urban population due to migrants who came to work from the central part of the Russian Empire. According to the 1897 census, 37.3 thousand people lived in Omsk. The town had 14 streets with a total length of more than 140 km and 13 squares.

Omsk in the first half of the 20th century

The beginning of the 20th century was a time of great changes for Siberia. Mass peasant colonization caused a sharp leap in the development of the region’s economy, primarily its agrarian sector, and the Trans-Siberian Railway ensured the inclusion of the local economy in the system of the All-Russian and European markets.

Due to its favorable economic and geographical position - at the intersection of the railway and the Irtysh River, in the middle of a vast agricultural territory - Omsk quickly turned into a large transport, trade and industrial center of Western Siberia and Governor-Generalship of the Steppes (Eastern and Central Kazakhstan).

Wholesale trade in bread, butter and other agricultural products was concentrated here. Omsk also became one of the industrial, social and cultural centers of Western Siberia. By 1903, the city’s population grew to 60 thousand people. In 1914, it had about 134.8 thousand residents. Omsk became the most populous city in Siberia.

During the Civil War on the territory of the former Russian Empire, from June 1918 to November 1919, Omsk was the residence of the Supreme Ruler of Russia, Admiral Alexander Kolchak, who declared this city the capital of white Russia opposing red Russia of the Bolsheviks. Soviet power was finally established in the city in 1920.

In the summer of 1921, an event took place that had a decisive impact on the cultural and economic life of Omsk. The functions of the administrative center of Siberia were transferred from it to the city of Novonikolaevsk (future Novosibirsk). In 1934, Omsk became the administrative center of a separate Omsk Oblast.

Over the years of industrialization, Omsk became one of the largest centers for agricultural engineering in the USSR. The metal-working industry also developed at a rapid pace. In 1939, Omsk numbered more than 288 thousand people.

During the Second World War, about 200 industrial enterprises were evacuated to Omsk, as well as 60 hospitals, dozens of educational institutions, theaters, museums, and hundreds of thousands of refugees.

Omsk after the Second World War

In the post-war years, new enterprises were put into operation in Omsk, all existing factories and plants were reconstructed and expanded. The industrial potential of the city was also strengthened by the Omsk oil refinery, the largest in the country. In connection with the rapid development of industry, especially petrochemical enterprises, the ecological situation deteriorated. The concentration of harmful substances in the air sharply increased. In 1964, the population of Omsk was about 702 thousand people.

In the 1970s-1980s, Omsk developed rapidly. In 1975, the city’s population exceeded 1 million. The most pressing problem was the ecological situation. Omsk was in the top 10 cities of Russia in terms of environmental pollution. Another problem that required an immediate solution was the development of passenger transport. The capacity of Omsk streets was exhausted, and therefore the construction of the subway became an urgent issue.

The economic crisis that gripped Russia after the collapse of the USSR had a negative impact on the economy of Omsk and the region as a whole. There was a significant decline in industrial production, construction volumes fell, and unemployment rose. A lot of organizations of the defense complex, research institutes, and design bureaus found themselves in a deep crisis without the state defense order.

The share of mechanical engineering and metalworking, light industry, and, to a lesser extent, chemical and petrochemical, forestry and woodworking industries decreased. At the same time, the share of the fuel industry, energy, and construction materials industry began to grow.

In the 2000s, Omsk again became one of the most important economic centers of Western Siberia with a developing mechanical engineering, petrochemical industry, various branches of the woodworking, construction industry, and a highly productive agro-industrial complex. In recent years, Omsk has also acquired the features of one of the largest Siberian centers of entrepreneurship and banking/financial activities.

Omsk - Features

Omsk is located in the south of the West Siberian Plain at the confluence of the Om River into the Irtysh, about 150 km from the border of Russia with Kazakhstan. About 60% of all residents of Omsk Oblast live in Omsk. The City Day of Omsk is celebrated on the first Saturday of August.

The city’s coat of arms is very similar to the first coat of arms of Omsk approved by Empress Catherine II in 1785. It depicts a part of the brick fortifications, which symbolizes the reason for its foundation as a fortress and the center of the Siberian defensive line.

Omsk belongs to the temperate climatic zone with a continental climate of the forest-steppe of the West Siberian belt. It is distinguished by an abundance of sunlight. The average air temperature in January is minus 16.3 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19.6 degrees Celsius. The highest wind speeds are observed in winter and spring, which is the reason for frequent snow and dust storms.

In the past, the ecological situation in Omsk was very unfavorable. Since 2011, the city’s environmental development rating has increased significantly. This was the result of large-scale modernization of many large industries (including the Omsk oil refinery). Today, road transport is the main source of air pollution in the city.

The level of pollution of the Omsk rivers - Irtysh and Om - remains consistently high. Swimming in them is prohibited. While industrial effluents are becoming more environmentally friendly, sewers are releasing waste products including diesel fuel and petroleum products into the rivers. Dust raised by dust storms is also a serious problem for the city as it contains a lot of harmful substances including lead.

The city’s industry is based on oil refining, petrochemistry, chemical industry, mechanical engineering (production of aerospace equipment, armored vehicles, agricultural equipment). Omsk is a major transport junction - the Trans-Siberian Railway runs through the city from west to east, and the navigable Irtysh River crosses it from south to north. Omsk Airport offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Tyumen, Surgut, Yekaterinburg, Krasnoyarsk, Salekhard, Kazan, Krasnodar, Sochi.

The unfinished subway of Omsk has become famous in Russia thanks to its only one fully built station. Its construction began back in 1992. However, due to funding problems, the completion of the first line was postponed numerous times. In 2019, it was finally decided to permanently stop construction. For local residents, because of the long wait for the completion of the construction, the Omsk metro symbolizes unrealizable hopes, they talk about it with irony.

In Omsk, there are practically no buildings higher than 50 meters, according to this parameter it is one of the lowest cities with a population of over one million. 130 architectural monuments are concentrated in the central part of the city, almost half of the total number.

Main Attractions of Omsk

Dormition Cathedral - the largest church in Omsk located in the very center of the city. The original church was built in 1891-1898. In 1935, it was completely destroyed. These 6 new travel gadgets announced at IFA are must-haves for any jet setter

kyle-closeup-headshot-edited2

This year, IFA 2024 in Berlin saw a deluge of innovative products, but one of the standout gear categories for me was all the new travel accessories. If you're anything like me, you want to travel as smart and streamlined as possible (no tangled cables here), so I'm always looking for new and useful gadgets to stash in my carry-on.

Also: Everything we expect at Apple's iPhone 16 event: AI features, AirPods, Apple Watch Series 10, more

These six products stood out to me for being smart, innovative, and, most of all, space-saving -- and were just unveiled to the public. Let's check them out.

1. PlugBug from TwelveSouth

The maker of the ingenious AirFly -- an adapter that lets you use your Bluetooth headphones with the headphone jack on a plane -- just announced its next clever travel must-have: the PlugBug , the first USB-C adapter with built-in Find My support.

I can't tell you how many times I've left adapters and chargers plugged into the outlet in a hotel, so bringing one with location support is a game-changer.

Also: Lose your chargers much? Twelve South's new 'PlugBugs' have Find My built in

The PlugBug comes in a 50W model (with two USB-C ports), or a 120W model (with four USB-C ports), and both support dynamic charging for two or four devices simultaneously. The device itself is sleek and slim and sits close to the wall when plugged in for maximum accessibility. All in all, it's one of those devices that makes so much sense you wonder why it's not already a thing.

The PlugBug is available for pre-order now, with orders shipping in mid-September.

2. Satechi Vegan Leather Passport Cover with Find My

If you're still walking around with a loose passport, you might want to think about getting some protection for that bad boy. Satechi's passport cover with Find My support is genius not only because it protects the actual passport itself, but also lets you keep tabs on its location.

If you walk off without your passport, Find My will alert you of its whereabouts right away. It could also spare you the time and money required to replace it if it's misplaced. That is one thing you most certainly do not want to lose.

Also: I went hands-on with Lenovo's auto-swiveling laptop at IFA 2024, and it's quite the spectacle

The vegan leather case feels premium and sturdy. It supports wireless charging with Qi, Qi2, or  MagSafe chargers  to keep the location tracker active. It costs $60, which certainly isn't cheap, but it's a solid device if you're prone to losing things.

3. Anker MagGo 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Pad

Anker's MagGo 3-in-1 is a little foldable device that got much attention at IFA for its portable form factor and usefulness for travelers with Apple devices. When it's folded up, it's small enough to hide in the palm of your hand, and the magnets keep it securely closed. But when you unfold it, it becomes a 3-in-1 wireless charging station with Qi2 support for three devices at once.

With a designated charge port for the Apple Watch and the claim that it can charge the iPhone 15 Pro from 0 to 20% in 15 minutes, this is one of those devices that simplifies your hotel nightstand situation with a single charging point for your gear.

The only drawback with this device is the relatively high cost of $90. Yes, it's an innovative and convenient design, but the asking price could turn off some potential buyers.

Also:  Buying an Apple Watch Series 10? Consider these 3 features before upgrading

It's currently available in four colorways, all of which are on pre-order. Anker says that the black units ship after September 15th, while the white units will ship after September 20th, 2024. The pink and blue units will be available later this year.

4. Beyerdynamic Amiron 300 earbuds

Beyerdynamic makes some high-fidelity audio products, and they're some of our favorite we've tested this year, from solid open-ear buds to bone-conduction headphones . This week at IFA, the company announced not one but three new products, including a new pair of earbuds that are great for traveling.

The Amiron 300 feature active noise-cancelling and a marathon battery life of up to 38 hours and up to 10 hours of continuous playtime for all-day use, which, if accurate, is longer than Apple's AirPods Pro 2, Sony's XM5 earbuds, and Samsung's Galaxy Buds Pro 3. This is a pair of earbuds that will last your entire flight.

Also:  Don't get AirPods: These Beyerdynamic headphones bring the looks, comfort, and sound

The Amiron 300 have Bluetooth 5.3 with multipoint, 10mm dynamic drivers, and Qi-compatible wireless charging. Additionally, the buds themselves feature a streamlined, flat design that don't stick out, which is great for sleeping on the plane. They're currently priced at $279 and will be available in October in black and white.

5. Soundcore Space One Pro headphones

If earbuds aren't your thing, luckily,  Soundcore just released a pair of foldable over-ear headphones that are great for traveling. The Space One Pro are portable enough to slip into any jam-packed bag, and light enough to go unnoticed. Beyond the form factor, they have some pretty impressive fast charging, with Soundcore claiming only five minutes of charge time gives you 8 hours of battery. Not bad for a long-haul flight.

They feature active noise canceling and feel very light to wear, making them a good choice for those of us who like to sleep with headphones on to drown out the noise. In my hands-on test at IFA, they also sounded great, with an overall balanced soundstage.

Also: Apple will announce two new AirPods models on Monday. Here are the key differences

The Space One Pro are available now for $200 , and for a limited time are coming with the travel carrying case for free (which is regularly priced at $35).

I would say this is one product that actually makes good use of the attached carrying case since it completes the package for these headphones as a fantastic travel pick.

6. Belkin BoostCharge Pro

Lastly, having a reliable power bank for your laptop is an absolute must when traveling, and Belkin's BoostCharge Pro is a beast when it comes to reliable power.

Announced at IFA, the BoostCharge Pro features a 20K battery capacity and the ability to charge up to three devices simultaneously. The 65W of power delivery, however, is only when using one port. Personally, I appreciate the fact that this has two USB-C ports and one USB-A, as it opens up the number of different cables you can use, as you don't always have your normal amount of gear while traveling.

Also: Apple enthusiasts will love Belkin's new multi-gadget folding travel chargers

The device is exceedingly lightweight and compact for the amount of juice it contains, and the display showing the amount of available power is easy to read and practical. It's available now for $90 .

Omsk: Western Siberia's hidden gem

A city view of Omsk. Source: Dmitry Feoktistov

A city view of Omsk. Source: Dmitry Feoktistov

Omsk was founded in 1716 when a wooden fort was constructed to house a Cossack unit in the area to protect the expanding Russian frontier from Central Asian nomadic incursions. It served various administrative functions throughout the 1800s and became infamous as a place of exile and incarceration. The city was rundown when selected as a hub for the Trans-Siberian railway in the 1890s. Many international trade companies and foreign consulates relocated here and the remnants of their offices can still be found in the city today.

The mystery of Kolchak’s gold

Omsk became the headquarters of the anti-Bolshevik white army led by Admiral Aleksandr Kolchak in 1918. In late 1918 there was a revolt in the city initiated by a leftist faction (Socialist Revolutionary Party or SPs) with 500 rebel deaths at the hands of Cossacks and Czechoslovak soldiers, a major factor in convincing the SPs to join the Bolsheviks. There is a large Soviet-era monument to the uprising at the corner of Lenina street and Broz Tito street.

Kolchak was entrusted with a large portion of the Tsarist’s gold reserves, yet amazingly lost much of it. Supposedly 250 million rubles were lost (about $8 million at the time). Legend has it that they were buried near the village of Taiga, yet numerous excavations have turned up nothing. The area still attracts the occasional fortune seeker.

travel tv vcr

Kolchak’s headquarters are located at what is today the  Omsk Regional Archives  at Broz Tito St., 3. Nothing shows how much times have changed as the imposing Kolchak statue that was unveiled in 2012 around the corner. The statue guards  Kolchak restaurant , a four-story culinary complex featuring a steak house, an Irish pub, a Central Asian café and an Italian eatery.  For more details on where and how to dig Kolchak's gold, see  Top Ten Mysterious Lost Treasures of Russia

Dostoevsky and the Tsar

At 1.15 million people Omsk dwarfs the region’s second largest city, Tara (population 28,000). The city is split by the River Irtysh into two sections (all places of interest are on the right bank) with downtown emanating from the River Om.

Most foreigners have heard of Omsk via writer Fyodor Dostoevsky who spent four years here as a prisoner (1849-1853). He spent most of his time in Omsk in squalor and chains and with no books besides the Bible, however, it left an indelible mark on his memory and influenced his future literary output. There is a statue of the writer in chains grasping a Bible at the corner of Partizanskaya and Spartakovskaya streets, where Dostoevsky undoubtedly stepped many times. A  museum dedicated to the author's time in Omsk  is located nearby at Dostoevskogo St. 1. The local university is also named for him.

Tarskaya Street is one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares. It features a monument to victims of Stalinist repressions and the Tara gates, originally built in 1792 as one of the four entrances to the Omsk fort. Nearby stands the Assumption Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Siberia. Future Tsar Nicholas II laid the first stone here in 1891 when making his way back to St. Petersburg after his Eastern journey.

In Omsk you are never more than a few steps from the village, made clear when one exits the center to the north, where most houses are wooden and roads unpaved. Stroll along Bulatova and Rabinovicha streets, a well-preserved ensemble of wooden architecture.

Omsk’s cultural heritage

The Pushkin State Library is worth a look with busts of Russian literary figures adorning the front side of the building. At the corner under the big “M” is one of several stations of the never completed Omsk metro. Construction began in 1992, but as of 2014 the project is again dormant due to financing problems.

One of Omsk’s most famous sons is Symbolist painter Mikhail Vrubel (1856-1910). Vrubel ignored contemporary trends and focused on themes from fairy tales, demons and religious subjects and also designed a majolica frieze for the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. Omsk’s Fine Arts Museum is named for him and features a number of  his works .

Over the years a number of tourists have tripped over the monument to Stepanych. This bust of a plumber rising from a sewer was the idea of Omsk’s former mayor after a trip to Slovakia in the 1990s. Stepanych has become one of the symbols of the city.

Omsk is a hockey town, with one of the major teams,  Avangard , in the KHL, Russia’s premiere professional league. Russian champions on several occasions, check out a match at Omsk Arena. But if you can’t catch a game there’s a large kiosk featuring the team’s merchandise at the airport.

Siberian   punk, jazz and the classics

While Omsk may not be on everyone’s radar musically, it does host a  musical theater  built just after the war. The building on 10 Let Oktyabrya Street is in the form of an enormous sloping grand piano.

Perhaps Russia’s most famous punk band,  Grazhdanskaya oborona  (Civil Defence), was formed here in 1982. The band was active until 2008 when lead singer Yegor Letov died of heart failure at age 43. Letov is buried at the Staro-Vostochnoe cemetery. A sprawling graveyard with thousands of graves, fans should stop at the administration for help in locating his grave.

In Russia, Omsk is known among the younger, tech-savvy generation primarily because of the “Omsk bird,” also known as Winged Doom. The origin of what became one of Russia’s most ubiquitous memes comes from a painting by German artist Heiko  Müller. One day in 2009 an Internet user posted this painting with the line, “Welcome to Omsk,” at the top. Additional versions menace viewers stating, “Don't try to leave Omsk,” and “Omsk is closer than you think.” Like many popular memes on the Internet, this one went viral and has become something like an unofficial symbol of the city.

Where Kamala Harris Stands on the Issues: Abortion, Immigration and More

She wants to protect the right to abortion nationally. Here’s what else to know about her positions.

By Maggie Astor

  • Published July 21, 2024 Updated Aug. 24, 2024

With Vice President Kamala Harris having replaced President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.

She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.

Here is an overview of where she stands.

Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.

She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.

As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.

Climate change

Ms. Harris has supported the Biden administration’s climate efforts , including legislation that provided hundreds of billions of dollars in tax credits and rebates for renewable energy and electric vehicles.

“It is clear the clock is not just ticking, it is banging,” she said in a speech last year , referring to increasingly severe and frequent disasters spurred by climate change. “And that is why, one year ago, President Biden and I made the largest climate investment in America’s history.”

During her 2020 presidential campaign, she emphasized the need for environmental justice , a framework that calls for policies to address the adverse effects that climate change has on poor communities and people of color. She has emphasized that as vice president as well.

In 2019, Ms. Harris, then a senator, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, introduced legislation that would have evaluated environmental rules and laws by how they affected low-income communities. It would have also established an independent Office of Climate and Environmental Justice Accountability and created a “senior adviser on climate justice” within several federal agencies. In 2020, Ms. Harris introduced a more sweeping version of the bill. None of the legislation was passed.

Ms. Harris was tasked with leading the Biden administration’s efforts to secure voting rights legislation, a job she asked for . The legislation — which went through several iterations but was ultimately blocked in the Senate — would have countered voting restrictions in Republican-led states, limited gerrymandering and regulated campaign finance more strictly.

This year, she met with voting rights advocates and described a strategy that included creating a task force on threats to election workers and challenging state voting restrictions in court.

She has condemned former President Donald J. Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. In a speech in 2022 marking the anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, she said that day had showed “what our nation would look like if the forces who seek to dismantle our democracy are successful.” She added, “What was at stake then, and now, is the right to have our future decided the way the Constitution prescribes it: by we the people, all the people.”

Economic policy

In campaign events this year, Ms. Harris has promoted the Biden administration’s economic policies, including the infrastructure bill that Mr. Biden signed, funding for small businesses, a provision in the Inflation Reduction Act that capped the cost of insulin for people on Medicare and student debt forgiveness.

She indicated at an event in May that the administration’s policies to combat climate change would also bring economic benefits by creating jobs in the renewable energy industry. At another event , she promoted more than $100 million in Energy Department grants for auto parts manufacturers to pivot to electric vehicles, which she said would “help to keep our auto supply chains here in America.”

As a senator, she introduced legislation that would have provided a tax credit of up to $6,000 for middle- and low-income families, a proposal she emphasized during her presidential campaign as a way to address income inequality.

Immigration

One of Ms. Harris’s mandates as vice president has been to address the root causes of migration from Latin America, like poverty and violence in migrants’ home countries. Last year, she announced $950 million in pledges from private companies to support Central American communities. Similar commitments made previously totaled about $3 billion.

In 2021, she visited the U.S.-Mexico border and said : “This issue cannot be reduced to a political issue. We’re talking about children, we’re talking about families, we are talking about suffering.”

More recently, she backed a bipartisan border security deal that Mr. Biden endorsed but Mr. Trump, by urging Republican lawmakers to kill it , effectively torpedoed. The legislation would have closed the border if crossings reached a set threshold, and it would have funded thousands of new border security agents and asylum officers. “We are very clear, and I think most Americans are clear, that we have a broken immigration system and we need to fix it,” Ms. Harris said in March .

Israel and Gaza

Ms. Harris called in March for an “immediate cease-fire” in Gaza and described the situation there as a “humanitarian catastrophe.” She said that “the threat Hamas poses to the people of Israel must be eliminated” but also that “too many innocent Palestinians have been killed.”

In an interview later that month , she emphasized her opposition to an Israeli invasion of Rafah, the city in southern Gaza to which more than a million people had fled. “I have studied the maps,” she said. “There’s nowhere for those folks to go, and we’re looking at about 1.5 million people in Rafah who are there because they were told to go there, most of them.”

She has said on multiple occasions that she supports a two-state solution.

Racial justice

Racial justice was a theme of Ms. Harris’s presidential campaign. In a memorable debate exchange in 2019 , she denounced Mr. Biden’s past work with segregationist senators and opposition to school busing mandates.

She has called for ending mandatory minimum sentences, cash bail and the death penalty, which disproportionately affect people of color.

Amid the protests that followed the police killing of George Floyd in 2020, she was one of the senators who introduced the Justice in Policing Act, which would have made it easier to prosecute police officers, created a national registry of police misconduct and required officers to complete training on racial profiling. It was not passed.

Her record as a prosecutor also came into play during her presidential campaign. Critics noted that as attorney general of California, she had generally avoided stepping in to investigate police killings.
