The trek involves gradual to steep ascents that even amateurs can cover. And since the Mcleodganj to Triund distance is not much, it is not very exhausting either. The first 5 km of the Triund trek are simple and not very undulating. Thereon, the Triund trek route gets steep and requires a sturdy walk. This stretch is popularly known as 22 curves because of the 22 sharp curves en route.

However, if you are trekking during winters, the trek becomes slightly difficult due to the presence of snow on the otherwise firm and well-defined path.

Triund Trek: The Perfect Hike from Mcleodganj + Mountain Goats!

  • Asia , Hiking , India , travel
  • Updated: January 19, 2024

Triund Trek - hiking route guide

Dharamshala in Northern India is famous for its association with the Dalai Lama and Tibetan community. It’s a fascinating and soul-nourishing place, but not far beyond the city you can experience soul-stirring peaks and joyful encounters with nature.

For anyone planning a visit to Dharamshala in Northern India , I encourage you to journey out onto the nearby nature trails that surround the city. If you’re wondering what hikes to do – as there are many – the Triund Trek is accessible to everyone and should be at the top of your list.

Triund is a green alpine meadow situated on top of a hill station from where you have breathtaking views of the snow-capped Dhauladhar mountains and Kangra valley.

The hike to Triund from McLeodganj is a captivating adventure that promises majestic landscapes, walking with mountain goats, and the sheer joy of being up-close and connected with the Himalayan foothills.

Mountain goats along the Triund Trek

Duration, distance & difficulty level

Duration: The trek to Triund begins from McLeodganj and can easily be completed in one day. It usually takes 3 hrs up and 2 hrs down. You’ll want to leave enough time to spend at least 1 – 2 hrs enjoying the views from Triund Hill, so I recommend starting early.

Note: You can extend by one or two days by continuing onto the Snowlike Trek and also the  Indrahar Pass Trek which takes you to 4,342 metres above sea level.

Distance: Depending on your starting point, it’s between 18 – 22 km round trip on foot.

Elevation:  Triund is at an altitude of 2800 metres, with a trek elevation of approx 1000 metres.

Difficulty: Although difficulty rating is quite subjective, I think it’s relatively easy – moderate comparative to other treks in the area.

I can assure you that if you have general fitness, with no problems standing on your feet all day, then you will be able to comfortably finish the trek in one day. If you get tired, there’s plenty of resting opportunities along the way, including a few stops for refreshments.

Getting to the trailhead

Trail signs on the trek to Triund

The starting point of the trek is Galu Devi Temple , and you can get there by walking or getting a taxi from Mcleodganj, or from Bhagsu Nag village. Of the two, Mcleod Ganj is more straightforward and easier, but Bhagsu Nah offers the better views to where the trail starts at Galu.

1st part of the Triund Trek

Hiking trail from McLeod Ganj, Dharamshala

The start of the trail is well marked and offers charming views of the valley and Dharamshala in the distance.

Almost as soon as the hike began, the uniqueness of the Triund trek began to unfold. From behind me, I could hear hooves clicking on the path and the sound was getting closer and closer.

I turned to look around, and saw a Shepard accompanied by his herd of donkeys and horses carrying heavy supplies strapped to their side. A couple of tiny dogs were running along for the ride like little musketeers.

horses along the Triund Trek

I walked with them for a while, feeling utterly overjoyed to be sharing the path with a herd of animals instead of a hoard of humans.

Eventually, I was no match for their well-oiled engines, causing the gap between us to grow until they disappeared up the paths and behind a forest of trees.

Magic View Cafe

About halfway through, I reached Magic View café , a charming makeshift mountain shop.

Located at the side of a cliff, it offered sublime views of the valley below. I ordered a chai tea and rested for a few moments to take in the full panorama of the valley.

As much as I felt content to stay, the thought of getting a better view from the top lifted me from my seat and onto my feet once again.

2nd part of Triund Trek + encounter with mountain goats

Soon after leaving Magic View café, I stopped in my tracks at the sight of a huge group of mountain goats. It was unlike anything I’d ever seen before.

Triund Trek hike guide - mountain goats

Amusingly, most of them were lounging around the main path. They couldn’t have looked less disinterested about any humans trying to pass through, myself included. I wondered whether it would be best to wait until a clearing in the path became available. Instead, I ended up weaving myself around them, careful not to step on any tails.

I stood for a while, marvelling at their beautiful long coats which swept along the ground like majestic capes in glossy shades of cream and brown, and grey and black.

Mountain goats in Mcleodganj - Northern India

Their most notable feature, their horns, looked as though they had been carved from a sculptor’s well-honed chisel. No two were the same. Each unique and differed dramatically in shape. Some horns shot up like spiral daggers, others had grown in flat a circular motion like two cinnamon swirls.

Mountain goat horns

Adding to the awe-inspiring scene were adorable babies goats, or ‘kids’ frolicking under the sun. They looked exactly like lambs. So cute! Possessing the energy of youth; not yet fully confident or capable on their legs but brimming with that youthful curiosity and persistence to get up and keep trying.

I genuinely could have turned back now and I would have been extremely happy. I felt nothing could top my encounter with these magisterial creatures. Though I still had lots of fuel in my tank, and with more people making their way up, it was time to move on.

The climb from here got steeper and rockier, and with this the views of the valley became wider and more spectacular.

The last 25 minutes to the top were probably the most challenging, with many curves in the trail (22 in total), but totally doable.

Reaching Triund Hill

Right before reaching the top, the view was obscured by a mound of huge boulders, only adding to the anticipation. Finally, one swift turn around the final corner, and there it was, the magnificent Dhauladhar mountain range of the Himalayas.

Stunning doesn’t even begin to describe it. I just stood scanning the whole view and imprinting it to memory. This was a moment I wanted to last forever.

Triund Hill in Dharamshala, India

If someone had told me that I was in Switzerland, I would have believed them. The towering sharpness of the slopes that looked almost close enough to touch, extended beyond a fertile meadow filled with grazing horses.

I sometimes wonder, how on earth does such beauty even exist, and how lucky I am to experience it.

Exploring Triund Hill - boulders & paragliders

triund trek 1 day

In the distance, I spotted a couple of paragliders, and watched them surf and meander through the thin clouds setting off from the top and into the valley below.

I have always thought if I could be transformed into any animal, it would be a bird. Can you imagine? Gliding across mountain tops, valleys, rivers, and borders. These paragliders seemed to have achieved something magical that resembled such freedom, if only for a few short but exhilarating moments.

As I began to explore Triund Hill, I came across lots of huge rocks, a playground for bouldering enthusiast. There weren’t many people in this section so I scrambled up a few just for the fun of it.

I stayed on Triund Hill for almost two hours, until fog started to appear. I watched as it engulfed the summit and soon could see nothing of the sharp peaks. It was a good job I started early. Had I arrived in the late afternoon, I would have been disappointed. Slowly, I turned around and made the journey back the way I came.

By stepping out onto these time-worn paths located on the foothills of the Himalayas, you’ll leave with a little bit of your heart behind.

Hike to Triund, guide

When is the best time to hike Triund?

The trek to Triund top can be done almost all year round except for the rainy months of July and August, and if you want to hike during peak winter months of January and February there will be a lot of snow so you should only go with a guide.

In December, you can expect the first snowfall on the trek. The spring and summer months of March to June have the best weather conditions to trek. Though post-monsoon in autumn from early September to November have the clearest views of the mountains during the trek.

I went in early October and the weather was perfect for hiking, with great visibility to enjoy crystal-clear views of the Dhauladhar mountains and Kangra valley

Want a more challenging hike? Add on the Indrahar Pass Trek

If you’re after something more challenging, you can extend the trek by one or two nights to complete the Indrahar Pass which reaches an elevation of 4300+ metres. Essentially, you do the Triund Trek, but continue to the Pass which increases in difficulty. It takes 3 or 4 days depending on your pace.

If you wish to do this hike, I recommend going with High Point Adventure . It’s an excellent and honest tour company and the guides are very kind and knowledgable. You can find their office located on Dalai Lama Temple Road in Mcleodganj.

I was supposed to do this trek with a guide, but had to cancel the morning of this hike as I spent most of the night awake. I’m not sure what happened exactly, but I’m quite certain it was an allergy to moth balls. Yep, of all things, moth balls. Many accommodations use them across India and they’re full of chemicals. For some of you, the smell might be nostalgic of your grandma’s cupboards.

The day previously, I had been hiking around the area and frolicking in the nature, feeling happy as a bee in honey. Everything was great until it was time to sleep.

Once I laid down and attempted to nod off, the sneezing started from out of nowhere. My nose turned into a running tap, followed by uncomfortable wheezing from my chest. The symptoms lasted all night, and I felt tired and miserable in the morning.

After a few moments of self-pity, I decided it would be better just do the Triund Trek. I was concerned it would develop into a cold, and I wouldn’t have the energy to make it over the Indera Pass, so figured I’d settle with the hike to Triud which I’d still manage even if I was feeling under the weather.

Regardless, the beauty that unfolded on the Triund Trek, and the view from the top, was enough to literally unblock my nose so I could smell the nature (also… there’s no nasty moths balls in nature so that helped!).

I’m sure I can also attribute feeling good to all the extra endorphins that you naturally get from all that increased breathing while hiking!

Triund Trek hiking guide

Where to stay in McLeodganj

I stayed in two different places while in McLeodganj – one in the centre of town that was a bit more plush, and the other was basic accommodation situated in nature.

If you’re short on time, I recommend staying somewhere in the centre of town. This way you’ll also have a wealth of cultural offerings on your doorstep, not to mention some great places to eat after a day of exploring.

While in town, I recommend staying at Norbu House . It has everything you need and more. Close proximity to the Dalai Lama Temple and each room has a balcony with beautiful views.

For the basic accommodation, I stayed at Sagar Cottage (not bookable online), which is located next to Galu Devi Temple. If you have a heavy wheelie bag, this place will be tricky to reach, but if you’re looking to be away from town and just want to go hiking, then it provides a good base. While it might be basic, the higher vantage point affords exceptional views.

If you’re looking for somewhere bookable that’s set on the outskirts of the city and closer to nature, Saheb’s Castle also offers an alternative stay.

Best Time to Visit  Triund Trek

Triund is a journey that can be done at any time of year, but the summers are regarded as peak season, attracting a significant number of visitors from all around the country. This trek is the first choice of those seeking for a simple and doable summer trek. Summer experiences fairly good temperatures with pleasant daytime and slightly colder nights. In March, April, May, and June, visitors can see beautiful trails and green forests with flowing streams.

This trek is also best done in the months following the monsoon season, just before winter. Daytime temperatures range from 5 degrees Celsius to 12 degrees Celsius from September to December, with slightly colder nights.

Is it safe?

Set amidst the popular destinations, the Triund trek is indeed very safe. All of our professionals strive to provide the best experience possible for trekkers, so a collaborative contribution of a relaxed mindset and morally communicative behavior with fellow trekkers will be greatly appreciated.

Despite the fact that the elevation is relatively low, if the hiker experiences any AMC symptoms, please notify our teams before continuing.

Difficulty level

Regardless of the fact that the top is relatively low in elevation, we recommend regulated physical fitness. All groups will be guided by our pros for trekking equipment and any impending terrain during the course. We strongly urge beginner trekkers to attempt the Triundtrek due to its modest difficulty.

Weather conditions

Summers on this trail are typically green, whereas winters see a gradual drop in temperature, allowing nearby areas to become covered in patches of snow.

The weather conditions vary depending on the time of year trekkers travel. From March to June, temperatures are moderately pleasant during the day but significantly colder at night. Monsoons continue to cascade the trek with heavy rain.

During the day the temperature of Triund trek is around ( 09°C to 18  °C  and during the night the temperature comes down to  05 °C  to 10 °C  which is not bad.

Things to carry

1) Because nights at elevations tend to be considerably colder, we suggest having well-graded, warm and comfortable clothing along with good quality shoes.

2) Despite the fact that we handle medical crises, we urge individuals to keep their emergency kits at hand in any case of personal underlying illnesses.

3) Since the journey provides you with a picturesque view of many peaks, don’t forget to bring your camera along with extra batteries.

4) Our staff will consult with fellow trekkers about their luggage and, if lacking, will assist trekkers in obtaining any necessary equipment. Only the relevant luggage should be brought, as a result.

Other important trekking essentials-

Connectivity and Transactions

1) All networks, including Vi, Airtel, and BSNL, function well in Himachal Pradesh, but connectivity along the route is unpredictable, so we advise people to complete all of their work ahead of time.

2) Trekkers will be provided with walkie- talkies beforehand in case of emergency

Triund Trek: A Face-Off With The Dhauladhar Range

' src=

The trek up to Triund hill was the tail end event of the entire Himachal backpacking trip. An Unknown path, steep and rocky trail, blind trust in google maps, with nothing but an intuitive sense of direction, an impending deadline, and unexplainable love for mountains. It was a perfect recipe for an adventure. And when it comes to adventures, I am game for it, come what may. Looking back at that trek, it reminds of these beautiful yet lasting words by James Baldwin.

And once you realize that you can do something, it would be difficult to live with yourself if you didn’t do it. James Baldwin, The Paris Review.

There is something with climbing mountains that I simply can’t give up on (read the description of the Instagram post below to know what). climbing mountains gave so much satisfaction that it’s very difficult to live with myself if I didn’t. Especially when you can see the peak challenging you from the window of your hostel, I simply can’t tuck myself under the blanket.

View this post on Instagram Why do you have to trek sir, That busy mind of mine keeps asking me. Why do you have to take the pain And climb huge mountains Why do you have to take the pain To cross slippery rocks Why do you have to take the pain To walk alongside dangerous ridges With a sigh, I reply!! Those huge mountains, Represent the huge challenges I have set for myself Those slippery rocks Represent the pitfalls in my plans The dangerous ridges represent The risks you gotta take to complete the challenges. But above all, Trekking teaches you one thing Really Really well. That is to always, always take One step at a time. No more no less. Just One Step. And soon you'll find yourself On top of the summit. P.S. So, it was the last circuit of the Himachal Backpacking trip with my friends. After a whirlwind trip from Delhi to Kasol and flying high in Bir Billing, we landed in Mcleodganj after what seemed like a grueling journey. The last few days have been intense, hectic and what not. But the moment I put my foot down at Mcleodganj the snow-capped mountains of Dhauladhar range allured me. My whole purpose of adding Mcleodganj to the itinerary was to get a little closer to those massifs. So, I asked my friends if they were up for the trek. All but Hithesh and Santhosh said no. Understandably so.

The choice for me, however, was obvious. I looked at the massifs and gave a thumbs up, “Challenge Accepted and you shall be scaled”. The others planned to explore the Dharamshala the following day. Read on to know all about my experience of the Triund Trek.

Table of Contents

We knew we were up for a challenge. The trek was 8 KM one way. We were planning to go via the Bhagsunag waterfall. This trail was the only option left other than the one from Gallu Devi which was 10 KM one way. The problem, however, was that the trail through Bhagsunag Waterfalls wasn’t very clear on maps or the ground. On top of that, we had a bus to catch in the evening, to reach Delhi. So, we had to start early, be alert mentally about where we were going and push ourselves to not give up until we boarded the bus 😉

So, we set the alarm, woke up, and started the hike at around 6 AM.

triund trek 1 day

We reached the Mcleodganj taxi stand and took the street towards the Bhagsunag temple. After crossing the temple there was a concrete path made all the way to shiva cafe. You can see the Bhagsu Nag waterfall from here. A beautiful stream of water running down between the hills.

Bhagsunag Waterfalls Mcleodganj

The concrete path had too many stairs in between that slowed us down a little. But within no time we reached the famous Shiva Cafe. Because it was too early in the morning, Shiva cafe was closed but it had all the vibes of a peaceful place.

Shiva Cafe McleodGanj

We crossed over the Bhagsunag Waterfalls to reach the other mountain. The trail started to narrow down from here. It didn’t look difficult but had too many diversions and turns. Maps ceased to work and we were left with our own judgment on which trail to take.

Into The Unknown Trails To Triund

One of the thumb rule you can use is to see if the trail has any footmarks, indicating recent usage. And another is to look at the peak and see if you’re not deviating far from the peak. We crossed that trail and reached a point with some magnificent views of the sleeping Mcleodganj.

Sunrise Over McleodGanj

The sun just started uncovering the lush greenery from the low-lit early mornings. We continued walking and this particular stretch was a little steep but there was a hut at the end of it. So with pumped-up energy, we reached the hut.

Breakfast Time

We ordered some Maggi and chai to recoup some energy. There was an elderly man running the store. We also asked him if we were on the right path to reach the peak. He nodded with a smile. Such a lovely smile 😀 We paid for the meals and started the hike again.

Breakfast On Triund Trail

The trail just disappeared from here on. We knew we had to reach the ridge in front of us. All we could see were thorny and dense plants in front of us. A muddy path appeared on close inspection. We just assumed it would be the trail and started walking with the sight undeviated from the peak.

The Trail Of Thorns and Hops

Soon it leads to another trail and we hopped onto that and then another one appeared and just like that, we navigated past the thorny patch. It was indeed a real-life example of “Set your eyes on the destination and you’ll always figure a way to reach there.” Because sometimes that’s life.

You have a sense of where you wanna go and you reach there by trial and error.

Climb Or Walk?

We were now at the start of the ridge. On one side it was the grandiosity of Dharamshala and Mcleodganj. Look at those brick-sized brick walls in front of the mighty mountains. It felt as if, if not for their mercy, those brick walls would’ve crumbled a long time ago. And on the other side, we had a steep climb ahead of us.

Birds Eye View Of McleodGanj From Triund Trek

While the ridge was really steep, almost as if it touched the sky but there was another route available by the side. We started hiking on the other route. And boy we were so glad we took this route. Just after a 100m- 200m walk on this route, we found another cafe. It wasn’t open yet but there were a few granite slabs turned into Sofas for customers to sit. I sat on one of the granite sofas. This cafe was almost on the edge of the mountain. So my eyesight slowly went down the valley before taking a steep climb up to a towering snow-capped mountain. What a tiny speck of dust I was in front of the majestic mountain.

Cafe With The View On Triund Trail

As much as we wanted to stay, the thought of getting a better view from the top made us restart the hike again. The hiking route took us up the ridge again and this time we continued on the ridge without any deviations.

The sun was right on our backs. The sweater I got slowly turned from a shield to baggage. The ridge walk became rough after a while. With steep climbs on a rocky path, it just threw one blow after another.

The Magic Unfurls

By then the snow-capped mountains started wrapping clouds around them. As if they’re doing a magic show to entertain us and make us forget and endure the pain of the steep climb. The occasional sight of a Himalayan Griffon made it all worthwhile.

Meadows And Massifs Of Triund

The first steep climb was behind us and the mountain rewarded us with another. We conquered that as well thinking the peak or Triund campsite was just at the top. But I think the ridge fell in love with our determination, So it presented yet another steep climb, we trekked up that too and then another and another and another. And we yelled at the ridge, “Up Up here we go” .

Trails of Triund

We kept taking small breaks and continued the climb. Occasionally looking back at the downward slope all the way to Mcleodganj. From that point, Mcleodganj was as tiny as an ant. The climb didn’t end there and the steep slopes kept challenging us. Added to that, the sun was merciless too. So we took the meadows to ease the stress on the legs for a while.

Meadows Of Triund Trek

After a brief walk on the meadows, the trail flattened out. The meadows were dotted with huge rocks.

Rocky Trails Of Triund

Face-Off With Dhauladhar Range

To our utter surprise, We reached the Triund Campsite at around 10:15 AM. And there it was, the magnificent Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas. With nothing but courage and a paraglide away from where we stood. I just stood there, taking in everything I can.

Reaching Triund Hilltop

The slippery glacial slopes, the towering sharpness of the peak, the clouds caressing its crown. I sometimes wonder, how on earth do such meadows even exist. I mean, look around, all you see are nothing but towering and unreachable peaks. Yet, almost magically, you have this Triund hill. A hill with all its meadows makes the perfect ground for you to witness the mighty mountains. I sometimes feel its all part of a clever architect’s design.

The Magnificent Dhauladhar Range

I was in love with that place. Just resting there, looking at those mountains made me unreasonably happy. With enough time at hand, we decided to take it slow.

Tranquility Of Triund

Looking at the cloud patterns it appeared to rain, so at around 12 PM we started the climb down the same way. Considering the trail was completely downhill, it was quick and not as tiring as it was. One last click before the rain kicked in xD

Posers Of Triund

On the way back we saw a few people. They may have climbed up via the trail starting at Gallu Devi Temple, stayed at the Triund campsite overnight (which I believe is now banned), and were climbing down. We climbed down the hill, hiked through the thorny trail, and after the last stretch of those winding narrow trails which were now familiar, we saw the Shiva Cafe. I was proved wrong when I said it had the vibes of a peaceful place. Against all my thoughts, it was surprisingly crowded. So crowded that we had to wait for a while to get a seat to sit and eat.

Shiva Cafe On the Way Back

We reached the La Vaca Hostel at around 3:30 PM. Met the other guys, packed our bags, and left to Dharamshala for the bus back to Delhi. For the first time during that trip, I stood there in silence witnessing the myriad shades of sunset sky. And just like that, we bid goodbye to the sun, Dharamshala and the Dhauladhar range of Himalayas.

The Goodbye Sunset At Dharamshala

As part of my effort to help more and more travelers witness the beauty of this world, I’m adding few FAQs to help you plan a hike up to the Triund Peak.

Why Should You Choose Triund Trek?

How long is the triund trek.

There are two routes you can choose for the trek. The trek to Triund via Bhagsu nag waterfalls is the shortest but also the toughest. The trail via Bhagsu nag waterfalls is 8KM one way . The other route to Triund via Gallu Devi temple is 10 KM one way but it’s not as tough as the first one.

How to do Triund trek?

If it was earlier, I would’ve advised you to set aside 2 days for the Triund Trek. The sunset and sunrise are supposedly breathtaking. But camping is now banned. So you can plan to do this in one day. I would suggest you start very early

How To Reach Triund Trek?

The basecamp for the Triund Trek is Mcleodganj. McLedoganj is 8 KM from Dharamshala and is frequented by local buses every 20 Mins. Dharamshala, in turn, is connected with all major cities in India via road. There are overnight Volvo buses running to and from Dharamshala to all major cities like Shimla, Manali, Chandigarh, and Delhi. So you can reach Dharamshala by bus from cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, etc.

You can even choose to fly down to Dharamshala. Book a ticket to Kangra Airport from wherever you’re in the world.

While at Mcleodganj, ask for Dharamkot which is another small area near McLeodganj. After reaching Dharamkot, ask for Bhagunaag Temple or look it up on maps. Once at the Bhagsunaag temple, take the concrete path towards Bhagsunag Waterfall. The waterfall is visible clearly once you cross the temple. Follow the trail to reach the Triund Peak via Bhagsunaag waterfalls. If you want to take the less intense Gallu Devi trail, then the Gallu Devi temple is about 1.6 KM from Bhagsunag Temple.

How difficult is Triund Trek?

Although the difficulty is subjective, I can assure you that if you have basic fitness, (If you can clock 5KM sprint in 40-45 Mins) then you will be able to comfortably finish the trek in one day. Even if you take the trial via Bhagsu Nag waterfalls. So, I would classify it as an easy to moderate trek. Triund trek is regarded as one of the best treks for beginners.

How To Plan For Triund Trek?

If you are coming from Delhi or nearby cities, take an overnight bus on one of your leisure weekends. Reach Dharamkot and start the trek using the directions mentioned above. Complete the trek. Stay in one of the hostels (I stayed in La Vaca Hostel , inexpensive for students too and very cozy). Explore Dharamshala the next day and head back to your city via another overnight bus.

In Case you’re planning for Triund Trek from Hyderabad or Bengaluru or Mumbai, then I recommend you to club a few other places in Himachal Pradesh. I personally took a week off and explored Kasol(Check out my blog post here ), hiked up the meadows of Kheerganga(Check out the DIY guide here ), Manali, did Paragliding Bir Billing, and landed at Mcleodganj for the trek. It was very hectic for me so you may delete or swap a few places. My strong recommendation is don’t come all the way just for Triund Trek.

Essentials For Triund Trek?

If you’re doing a one-day trek to Triund, then below are few items I definitely recommend:

  • Sweatshirt (If you’re starting very early)
  • Good Hiking Shoes
  • Comfortable pair of clothes.
  • Another pair if you wish to get into Bhagsunaag waterfalls on your way back.
  • 2-3 Liters of Water. It gets really hot at the top during the summer months.
  • Shades/sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Protein bars or Nutri Bikies to energize yourself. Don’t pack the entire supermarket citing the hiking reason. And PLEASE DON’T LITTER.

P.S: For Ladies, please pack essentials as deemed necessary by you beyond the above-mentioned items. Safe trekking.

P.P.S: I’ve mentioned the above essentials keeping summer months in mind. Please plan according the season in which you’re planning to go.

Is Triund Trek Safe?

Whenever you are in the mountains, you are always at the mercy of nature. Please respect the nature and conditions and you will be good. The trail from Bhagsunag waterfalls to Triund is a continuous climb. I am sure of its slippery nature in monsoons. The trail from the Gallu Devi temple is a ridge walk. So, it is quite dangerous in the event of a landslide. Otherwise, the trail is very good for hiking. Just respect the nature and overcast conditions and you will be safe in the lap of nature.

Can Triund trek be done alone?

It is given that Triund Trek is very ideal for beginners and also the trail is clear from the Gallu Devi temple. So, even solo trekkers and travelers can hike up to the Triund campsite without any doubts in mind. Take sufficient snacks and water and precautions about your personal safety while you’re on and off the trail. It’s highly likely that you will find enough people to befriend if you take the Gallu Devi temple. So rest assured and you can do this trek completely on your own without a guide.

Where To Stay In Your Trip To Triund Trek?

Dharamkot is the basecamp for a lot of treks in the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas. By the virtue of that, there are a number of backpackers hostels in McleodGanj and Dharamkot. You can find branded backpacker hostels like Hosteller, La Vaca Hostel, etc. We stayed in La Vaca hostel and it was really comfortable and affordable. You can check for bookings on booking.com or Airbnb.

Other Treks Near Triund!

So, if you have more time at hand you can go for other trekking destinations around Triund. Treks like Indrahar Pass Trek, Laka Glacier Trekking are all one day trek away from Triund hill. Refer to this article for more details.

Cost of Triund Trek!

Barring the personal expenses, the cost for Triund Trek is INR 0 rupees. You read that right, unsure why, but there is no entry fee for Triund trek. So if you’re doing it on your own it’s completely free of cost.

What’s The Height Of Triund Hill?

The Triund Hill is at a height aka Altitude of 2850m above sea level. It is situated at the foot of the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas.

Triund Trek Map/Route

Refer to the below-handmarked trek route for reaching Triund Hill from Mcleodganj. I’ve marked the trails for both the trails of Bhagusnag Waterfalls as well as the Gallu Devi Temple trail.

Triund Route Map From McleodGanj

Should You Choose Kheerganga Trek or Triund Trek?

Honestly, there is no right answer. For me, Kheerganga was more exciting simply because it had much more variety. Kheerganga has meadows, forests, steep climbs, waterfalls, and above all hot water springs. You can read about my experience here . But on the other hand, Triund Trek brought me much closer to the snow-capped mountains which were just distant backgrounds in pictures during Kheerganga Trek. However, Kheerganga is a moderate difficulty trek and you need two days to complete the trek. So if you have two days to spare, give Kheerganga a shot. If you’re looking for a quick weekend trek, then go for Triund.

Hope the FAQs help you plan your trip better. Have a good time in the Himalayas and while you’re there, take care of the mountains.

Guide To Triund Trek, The Best Trek For First-timers

BannerImg

If you are a beginner and pondering about where to go for your first trek, Triund is the best option for you. Triund is a hill station situated in the district of Kangra. Located in the queen state of Himachal Pradesh , the Triund trek is an apt destination for first-time to moderately experienced trekkers.

Located amidst the vast and sturdy Dhauladhar range and Kangra valley, Triund trek provides some of the finest beauty of the knolls. Though rocky and hard at some places, the trail towards Triund is not too steep and its curvatures pass through lush green forests of oak and rhododendron. Not to mention its splendour during dawn, dusk, and moonlight, the hills gift an exhilarating cosmos to the nomads throughout the day as well. Triund trek is also a favourite weekend destination of many from Chandigarh and Delhi.

The base camp for Triund trek is Dharamshala. The nearest railway station and airport is Pathankot (Punjab) and Gaggal (Himachal Pradesh) which is 85 kilometres and 8 kilometres away respectively.

How to reach the base camp for Triund

Once a traveller reaches Mcleodganj (10 kilometres from Dharamshala), the next destination is Dharmkot which is the reporting point of the trek. It is at a distance of 1 kilometre from Mcleodganj bus stop which can be covered by walking or by hiring an auto from the bus stop.

Best time to visit

The Triund trek can be taken up at any time throughout the year. The track goes a little shabby and muddy during monsoons. Snowfall during winter also makes the road less suitable for the trek. Best time for experiencing Triund is between March to June and then again from October to the beginning of December. The route remains closed for few weeks of December and January due to heavy snowfall.

Difficulty level

Triund trek is considered the best trek for starters. The trek stretches over a distance of 10 kilometres where first 4 kilometres is an easy trail but the last 2 kilometres have sharp, steep bends which make the trek a bit tough. There are 22 curves in the road for which the trail is also famous as ‘22 curves’.

Watching the sunrise from Triund Trek

Triund Trek itinerary

The trek can be smoothly completed at a span of two days and one night.

It’s best to start from Mcleodganj base camp at around 10 in the morning after breakfast. The road ascends via Dharamkot and Naddi and takes almost 4.5 hours to reach Triund. The road from Bhangsu village makes its way among jungles of oak and rhododendron. There are small snacks shops on the way where one can rejuvenate.

There are plenty of camps and a Forest Rest house (no need of prior booking) at Triund where one can spend the night. Camping, star gazing sessions, bone fires, and other such activities are the main highlights of staying overnight at Triund. Normally, booking at camps include accommodation and all meals.

After breakfast, trekkers hike to Khabrotu from where one can have the breathtaking view of Lake Glacier and the massive Dhauladhar. Taking a different downhill path while descending is advised to reach Bhagsu village. On the way, one can have the sight of the Bhagsu Waterfall. Gallu Devi temple is another point of a visit during the downhill journey. There are small shops along the downhill road where one can have their lunch as well.

Many say that Triund can be done in a single day! Yes, it can be but it all depends on your energy, fervour and of course, fitness level to cover both the uphill and downhill distance in a single day.

Tips before the trek

  • Weigh less. Leave out all unnecessary luggage at your hotel. The lesser burden will ease your trek.
  • Apart from winter seasons, wearing a jacket, trekking shoes and gloves will suffice for the climb. Make sure to carry raincoats and waterproof shoes during rainy days.
  • A large number of travel companies organize Triund trek. The best option is to book the trek from any of these companies. Their guidance, experience, and skills of practice prove beneficial for beginners. As mentioned earlier, the travel companies look after every need of trekkers along with accommodation and all meals.
  • Apart from the above, accommodation options are available near Gallu Devi temple areas as well where one can arrange their halt.

Things to carry to Triund

These are divided into general requirements and must-carry essentials to keep in your backpack.

Triund Trek in McLeod Ganj : A complete guide

Standing over the green meadows at the top of Triund,  I was overwhelmed   by the sight of the snow covered  imposing face of the Himalayas. I can hardly ever forget that image! At the same time, it was natural for me to feel philosophical up there. At the top, it suddenly turns adventure into spirituality, a very unique experience indeed! However, in order to experience that unique feeling, one has to complete a 10 km long trek. Though the Himalayas offer scores of trekking options, Triund trek in McLeod Ganj is one of the moderate ones. If you are up for that experience, here’s a complete guide to the Triund trek in McLeod Ganj.

{To make your reading complete, here’s the link to our Triund trek diary:  Triund: Trekking in a garden }.  {For more such trekking plans, do check out:  Dzukou Valley Trek }

The base location: McLeod Ganj/ Dharamshala

The location of Triund near McLeod Ganj in Dharamshala couldn’t be any better. Its history, heritage, scenic views, cultural and spiritual vibes are reasons for me to go back again and again. It was established as a hill-station by the British in the later part of the 19th century. In fact, it’s named after a British lieutenant governor- David Friell Mcleod.

{Read about another hill-station named after a British official:  Dalhousie }

It was only in the post-independence era, in 1959, Tibetan leader- His Highness the Dalai Lama sought political refuge in India. In an act of solidarity with the Tibetan freedom struggle, Indian government permitted to set up his capital in exile in McLeod Ganj. Since then,  McLeod Ganj has become a hub of Tibetan Buddhism, and is known as ‘Little Lhasa’ (the capital of Tibet).

On my part, I have a fondness for Buddhist philosophy as well as Tibetan culture, especially their colourful Monasteries.  Besides, Dharamshala is also home to tea gardens, heritage sites and much more. In many ways, it reminds me of  Darjeeling  (have look). Find a list of major tourist attractions in Dharamshala-McLeod Ganj in a section  below .

Triund Trek in McLeod Ganj: A fact sheet

Triund peak is 2850 meters (9350 feet) above sea level. The  route of  Triund trek in McLeod Ganj is 9-10 kilometers (one way) from the base to the top, and can be covered in 5-6 hours. If one starts early in the morning, one can complete the Triund trek in one day. However, a night-stay in a tent at the Triund peak overseeing the snowy mountains is an amazing experience not to miss.

For your information, some trekkers go much beyond Triund peak. They trek up to snow-line at 3500 meters (10,000 feet), and Indrahar pass at 4300 meters (14108 ft). Thus, if you are interested in trekking beyond Triund peak, have some more days in hand.

Triund Trek in McLeod Ganj: How to plan

We heard that trekkers do it in all seasons across the year. But in general, in my view, spring (March-April) is the best time. The temperature is just perfect, neither too cold nor too hot. Besides, clear skies mean the best views. And of course, not to forget the  Rhododendrons  ( Buraansh in Hindi). Because Rhododendron flowers bloom only in the spring.  Believe me, the walk among the Rhododendrons is absolutely enjoyable.

triund-trekking-gang

Monsoons could be risky due to possibility of landslide/ rocks falling off. Besides, thick clouds block views of the valley. Winters would be too cold to enjoy, especially the night camping at the top. In the summer, day time trekking would be really difficult; but one can start in the wee hours of the morning.

Arranging the trek (with a guide or without):

Though one really doesn’t need a guide to trek, it’s good to have one if you are doing it the first time, or you are with family. The guide’s company provides all amenities like tents, blankets and food/ water, etc. They carry all the stuff by mountain-hardened horses. They charge approximately Rs. 1000 per person, including guide services, tents, sleeping gear, food, etc.

If you need a guide, you may contact Anil (we have his mobile phone number; just ask in the comment section).

To camp overnight or not:

No doubt, camping for the night at the top is a must do. The blanket of stars spread across the clear night sky makes it an unforgettable experience. The nearby snow-clad mountains are visible even in the darkness of night. And if it is a full moon night, one would enjoy sitting outside the tents or walking around the plateau. Plus, the experience of the morning-after is also beautiful. See in the picture below how a morning at the top looks like.

Alone or in a group:

While travelling in groups can be a little limiting (freedom) in general, I would say it’s more enjoyable trekking (and other adventure trips) in groups rather than alone. Moreover, trekking in group reduces the fear factor, and calms down the nerves.

The trek route and schedule

The two routes:.

There are two main routes to complete the Triund trek in McLeod Ganj:

  • While one route starts from Bhagsunag temple side, the other one starts from the Guna Devi temple.
  • Though the route that starts from Bhagsunag temple is a bit shorter than the other one, it’s steeper at places.
  • The route starting Guna Devi temple is longer, but has gentler slopes. However, in order to take this route, one needs to hire a vehicle to get dropped at Guna Devi temple, some 2-3 kms away. Else, add that distance in the trek itself, which makes it around 12+ kilometers.
  • In any case, both the routes have easy to moderate slopes at different points.
  • Overall, I would suggest first timers to take the Guna Devi temple route.

triund-trek-mcleod-ganj

When to start:

  • In order to complete the Triund trek in McLeod Ganj in one day, one should start as early as possible in the day so as to reach the top by early afternoon. This way, one has some time in hand to spend at the top, and enough time to reach back McLeod Ganj before it’s dark.
  • If one is planning for night camping, the starting time can be a little late in the morning. But it’s always good to start early so as to avoid trekking in the afternoon sun, unless it’s winter or spring.

The trekking path:

As Triund is a popular trek route in McLeod Ganj, the trekking path is well laid out. Moreover, unlike many trekking routes, one would not get lost on the way. At places, the path is like a stairway made of rocks/ stones. At other places, it’s just a gentle slope to hike. It’s only towards the end of the trek that the path becomes a little steep and a bit difficult, that’s only about 1 km.

One thing that I loved particularly about the trekking path was the abundance of blooming Rhododendron trees. Interestingly, number of these trees kept increasing as we gained height. So much so that at one point, it just felt like trekking in a garden! You will experience the same if you are trekking in the spring.

rhododendrons-triund-trek-mcleod-ganj

The Midway rest points:

On the way, there are two proper halting stations, which really means two decent eateries. The first one is called the Magic point, approximately 2 kms from the starting point.

Just ahead of the Magic point, look for a small off-route towards left side. Hike a bit to find a nice view point, perfect for photography. I liked a huge black rock there inching out of the hill surface like a cliff. It’s easy to climb up there and take cool clicks!

The second one doesn’t have a name, but it’s like a little polythene covered snack point. After the second rest point, the trekking route becomes gradually more difficult.

magic-point-triund-trek-mcleod-ganj

How is it at the top:

Once you reach the top, it’s but obvious to be overwhelmed by the sight of those snow-clad Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas. You will feel as if the grand mountains are smiling at you and are welcoming you to their home. Instantaneously, all the pain taken in the last 5-6 hours would vanish, and would seem totally worth it.

After a while, you will notice the lush green plateau beneath your feet. Huge pieces of boulders interspersing the meadows look fascinating!

Dress for the trek:

  • Wear comfortable fitting clothes. Avoid tight-fitting clothes like jeans.
  • Put on layers (sweaters, jackets etc) as per seasonal requirement.
  • The weather can deteriorate any time at the top. So, it’s good to carry some woolens even during the summers.
  • Trekking shoes, or at least good sports shoes with grip is a must.
  • Besides, a cap or some kind of head gear is advisable.
  • Further, sunglasses are a good addition.

magic-point-triund-trek-mcleod-ganj

Big question: Is there a toilet up there?

Answer: No; so, you know what to do, right! (The Forest Deptt. is not allowing any construction work at the top. However, somewhere below the peak, some trek operators have toilet facilities). In any case, believe me, toilet would not matter; everyone manages just well, out in the open.

Things to carry:

  • If you are not on a guided trek, of course you have to carry the tent, blanket, food etc.
  • A torch, a lighter and an umbrella would be handy
  • A walking/ trekking stick is optional (we didn’t need them)
  • Some dry snacks/ energy bar
  • Water bottle; not too many, just one to start with. Their weight can be annoying. In any case, there are small shops at 2-3 points on the way.
  • Above all, carry basic first-aid kit; sun-screen lotion, etc.
  • While you might want to carry a lot of things, control your urge. It will be better to keep yourself light rather than stuffed.

  • The Tibet Museum; a great collection of Tibetan artefacts and culture
  • Dharamshala Cricket Stadium: A picturesque ground with the Himalayas in the backdrop
  • Kangra Art Museum; rich collection of traditional miniature paintings.

Concluding Notes

Triund trek in McLeod Ganj is really enjoyable with gentle slopes and great views of the Himalayas all around. It’s long enough to give that satisfaction of completing a proper trek. At the same time, i t’s not too long to deter non-regulars to undertake this trek. If you have never done trekking in mountains, Triund trek in McLeod Ganj is a great option to start the journey.

I would suggest to plan your trek in the spring season- late March to April end, especially because of pleasant weather and the Rhododendron flowers. Do plan for a overnight camping at the top. Further, icing on the cake would be a full moon night. If possible, do it in a small group- your best buddies.

Besides, please don’t forget to have some extra time (at least two days) on hand to explore places in and around McLeod Ganj. Have a great time and thank me later!

Trek to Triund Top – A Complete Guide

The trek to Triund Top, near Mcleodganj and Dhamarkot in the state of Himachal Pradesh, is a popular one. The reason? It is short and easy – great for first-time hikers. The reward for reaching the top is the gorgeous view of the snow-covered Dhauladhar range and green grass as far as the eyes can see. It is a sight to behold!

We were two girls who trekked to Triund all by ourselves and loved every bit of it. If you’re in the Dharamshala/Mcleodganj area then you definitely should hike to Triund top. The below-mentioned pointers are all you need to know for a successful Triund hike.

Note: Please do not litter when you travel. Carry your waste with you in bag and if possible pick up any litter your find.

1. At what height is Triund?

Triund top is at the height of 2,850 m (9,350 ft). The elevation gain during the trek is about 914 metres (3,000 feet).

The green Triund Top

2. What is the best month to hike to Triund?

The trek to Triund top can be done all year round except for the rainy months of July and August, and the peak winter months of January and February. In December, you can expect the first snowfall on the trek. The spring and summer months of March to June have the best weather conditions to trek. Though post-monsoon months have the clearest views of the mountains during the trek.

We went in late April and during this time there is a lot of haze due to forest fires. Hence, the view of the valley and mountains during the trek wasn’t very clear.

View of the Kangra Valley during the trek to Triund

3. How long is the Triund trek?

There are two main Triund trek routes: One from Dharamkot (via Gallu Devi Temple) and one from McLeodganj (via Bhagsu)

1. Dharamkot (via Gallu Devi Temple): 7 km and 4.5 hours at an average pace one way

The route up from Dharamkot goes via Gallu Devi Temple. This is the preferred route because it is not only the easier of the two but also a very beautiful one through Rhododendron and Oak forests. Remember to go up from Zostel via the staircase. After reaching Gallu Devi temple, you’ll have to take the path going right. It’s not difficult to find and there is a shop and checkpoint there so you’ll be sure of where you’re going.

If you want to shorten your hike to about 5.45 km and 4 hours approx., then take a cab to Gallu Temple Checkpoint. We took a cab from near Zostel in Dharamkot to Gallu Temple and it cost a whopping Rs. 500 after bargaining! The road to the temple is quite bad and hence the cab guys charge quite a bit.

Gallu Devi Temple at the start of the trek to Triund

2. Mcleodganj (via Bhagsu Falls) : 9 km and 6 hours at avg pace one way

There is another trek route to Triund that goes via Bhagsu Fall and Shiva Cafe. It is considered to be more challenging because certain sections are steep and slippery and hence the trek takes more time to complete. It is, therefore, not recommended for beginner hikers. Per my observation, most tour groups take this path. They start at Mcleodganj Chowk, go through the falls and then to Triund. So if you’re a beginner and planning to book a tour, read/enquire about the route details carefully before making your booking. In this blog post, we will only discuss the Dharamkot/Gallu Devi Temple Route.

4. Do I need a book a tour or hire a guide to trek to Triund?

You don’t really need a guide or tour. If you’re walking alone, you might prefer to hire someone for company’s sake but it’s unnecessary especially if you take the Gallu Devi Temple route.

As I mentioned before, we were two girls who did Triund trek without a guide. At no point did we feel that we should have come with a guide. You will keep bumping into people from time to time since it is a popular hike. It’s perfectly safe and easy!

5. Can the Triund trek be done in one day?

Yes, it absolutely can. A day hike is best if you’re short on time and can spare only one day. Remember that you’ll need to be physically fit to hike up and then back the same day. It would be about 12-18 km depending on your route and take you 5-7 hours minimum not counting the time you’ll spend at the top.

6. Should I spend the night at Triund?

If you hike a lot then staying the night may not be interesting for you since you’ll complete your journey up quite fast and have plenty of time to spend there before you come back down.

For beginners or those who don’t hike often, I would highly recommend doing a Triund night stay for these reasons:

  • If you’re hiking all the way up, you should be able to have ample time to walk around Triund Top and soak in the view
  • Hiking up and down on the same day can be tiring. We very much enjoyed our leisurely walk up to Triund and were grateful for the rest we got at night before having to go back.
  • The view in the evening during sunset is spectacular. The way the sun turns the mountains golden is a sight you should not miss.
  • Triund is best explored in the evening as it isn’t blazing hot
  • If the sky is clear, you’ll see a beautiful starry sky during your Triund night stay

7. How can I spend the night at Triund?

To spend the night at Triund, you can either pitch your own tent or stay at an established camp.

If you’re going to pitch your own tent

If you’re planning to pitch your own tent, note that it is technically not allowed but people still do it. Make sure you walk further toward the Triund head (which goes to the Bhagsu route) and pitch a tent there hidden by the many rocks. Also, only pitch a tent around sunset just before it gets dark so no one bothers you saying it isn’t allowed.

If you’re going to be staying at an established camp

If you’re going on a weekend, you definitely need to have a camp/stay pre-booked. There might be a lot of rush so you may not get a camp. In case you’re unable to prebook a camp, I’d suggest hiking up as early as possible so you can find an empty camp or hike back down if you can’t.

If you’re going on a weekday, it’s your wish if you want to prebook or not. Note that if you’re not pre-booking then it is best to reach there as early as possible and ask for options.

Tent for our Triund night stay

We prebooked our camp through Dhauladhar’s Doors just a night prior to going. Dhauladhar’s Doors is located at Triund top and has 2 tents, a cottage with rooms, a kitchen and a dining area. It also had a separate tent that is a toilet – a dug-out pit to do your thing with a shovel provided to cover it up with mud. You can book either the tents or a room by calling Mr Raj at +91-9736641934. They provide simple and tasty dinner (Dal, Chawal, Sabzi, salad, papad) and breakfast (bread omelette or Maggi and tea). In the tent, you’re given a cotton mattress and a sleeping bag. This cost us Rs. 1,200.

8. How much does it cost to do the Triund Trek?

Day hike without a guide: If you hike in one day without a guide, then it’ll cost you nothing except any food and water you buy along the way or sticks you rent out.

Overnight stay with self-booked camp: If you’re staying the night, the camp will cost you about Rs. 700-1500 per person. Lower side on reaching there and booking and higher side on pre-booking.

Tours to Triund: These would cost in the range of 800-1800 depending on the duration of the tour, camping site and provisions. Here’s one option: Triund trek with camping

How much the two of us spent:

Cab to Gallu Devi temple: Rs. 500

Camp: Rs. 2,400 (inclusions: tent, dinner, breakfast)

Stick: Rs. 100 (Rented stick for Rs.100 each, returned it and got Rs. 50 each back)

Food and beverages at magic view cafe: Rs. 300 (Maggi, bread omelette, coffee, tea, water refill)

Beverages at Triund top: Rs. 50 (coffee and tea)

Gatorade and water at triund top: Rs. 150

Food and beverages at magic view cafe: Rs. 400 (Maggi, bread omelette, coffee, tea, water refill, Gatorade)

Cab from Gallu Devi Temple to Dharamkot: Rs. 500

Total for 2 people: 4,400

Cost for 1 person: 2,200

9. At what time should I start the Triund trek?

Now that you’ve decided if you doing a day hike or staying the night let’s get into the time to leave. Remember that we will only discuss the hike through the Gallu Devi Route in this article so here goes.

For Day Hikers

If you’re a day hiker, then you have to start the hike before 11 AM. After that, you won’t be allowed up without a camp booking. It’s safer to cross the checkpoint at Gallu Devi Temple before 10 AM.

I’d suggest starting as early as possible. Most people start between 7-9 AM. The reason for this is that if you’re slow, you’ll have plenty of time to spend at Triund and some more to return before dark. If you’re fast, you’ll have more time to spend at Triund or you can even go up to Snowline Cafe.

For Campers

Take note that you are not allowed to cross the Triund checkpoint after 2 PM.

If you’re setting up your own camp or haven’t pre-booked a camp, then leave before 11 AM. If you have already prebooked a camp, you can leave between 11 AM and 2 PM as well.

Here’s my suggestion:

Leave before 11 AM regardless. If you’re a slow hiker, you’ll get plenty of time at Triund before sunset and if you’re fast you’ll get even more.

We left at 12:30 PM, took tons of breaks for various reasons and reached by 5:30 PM. The issue with this was that after arriving so late, we had only one hour to enjoy the sunset and find our camp. We couldn’t explore Triund Top properly this evening but consoled ourselves thinking that it’ll be okay to explore it the next day. But the next morning we noticed, to our dismay, that it was not only very sunny and hot but also that the mountains aren’t really visible. I would have rather reached much earlier the previous evening and left Triund early the next morning.

The view from Triund Top in the morning

10. What happens at the Gallu Devi Temple Forest Checkpoint?

On reaching the Gallu Devi Checkpoint, you will be stopped by a police officer who will check your Government ID card and make a note of your name and ID number in a register. They will also take a photocopy of your ID card. If you reach the checkpoint after 11 AM then he’ll also check your camp booking confirmation.

Further, the officer will check your bag for alcohol and speakers. These are not allowed on the trek.

Don’t forget to rent a stick if you don’t have your own trekking pole. It is available at the checkpoint shop. It costs only Rs. 100 to rent and you get Rs. 50 back on returning it. This stick will help you immensely on your way up to Triund by taking your body weight off your legs and dividing it between your upper body and lower body. Your knees will thank you for lowering the stress on them and your back for better posture. As a result, your balance and speed will increase.

11. What is the Triund trek route like?

Here’s a video of my experience . It’s the very first long-form video I have ever edited, so please be kind.

The first half from Gallu Devi Temple is a gradual ascent through Rhodendron and Oak forests. A lot of the trek will be shaded by these trees which will lower the intensity of the sun on you. You’ll not get very tired.

Start of the trail to Triund via Gallu Devi Temple

The floor will be a mass of leaves and will gradually start having more rocks. From time to time you’ll find clearings that’ll give you a view of the Dharamshala area or rather the Kangra Valley. It’s quite a view on a clear day.

Valley view from Magic View Cafe on the Triund trek route

You’ll reach the mid-point of the hike with just a few breaks here and there to catch your breath. The midpoint is marked by two cafes – Magic View Cafe and Best View Cafe. Magic View is the oldest Chai shop built in 1984 and the better one too. (Trust me, we tried both and the person at the other cafe didn’t care about his business at all)

The well-stocked Magic View Cafe midway on the Triund Trek

Second Half

The second half begins to get steeper and steeper. But it’s perfectly fine – nothing scary just more tiring. The ground will have more rock than leaves and the trees will clear out more and more.

The trail will also start to get more beautiful.

triund trek 1 day

The final 20-30 mins will be a bit gruelling. You’ll feel like giving up but you’ll see the route get greener telling you that you’re just about to reach. Carry on and you’ll be rewarded in just a bit.

triund trek 1 day

The moment you near the very last few steps to Triund Top, you’ll get a glimpse of the mighty Dhauladhar Mountain Range and trust me, all your tiredness will melt away and be replaced by sheer awe and gratitude.

triund trek 1 day

A few more steps and you’ll see green grass and rocks all over. You can grab a tea or coffee and bite at the very visible tea stall! Just spend the evening walking around, breathing clear fresh air and being mesmerized by the view.

Be sure to get settled in your camp before dark.

To find your specific camp or a random camp to stay in (if you’ve not pre-booked your stay) simply ask the person at the shop. When we got there our camp person located us himself so it was quite convenient.

12. What to Pack for the Triund Trek?

Basics (will be needed by day hikers and by campers).

  • Hiking Shoes: Wearing hiking shoes will ensure you get a better grip, lessen the chance of a sprain and increase your speed on the trail. If you’re buying a new one, please break into them before attempting this hike or any other. Shop for hiking boots on Amazon
  • Hiking Socks: Hiking socks keep your feet dry and less sweaty. But mainly, it keeps your feet cushioned which stops painful blisters from forming as your hiking shoe rubs against the foot while you walk
  • Comfortable Backpack: Backpacks that have straps with good padding are ideal! If you wear a thin-strapped or fashion backpack, you will feel the weight of the bag a lot through the hike and it’ll weigh you down. Day hikers can carry a small backpack (10-20 L) and not worry about this too much but campers will need to be a lot more thoughtful about this as they’ll be carrying more weight. A 30-40 L backpack will be sufficient.
  • Rain Cover for Backpack: This will keep your bag and the stuff inside dry in the rain! Buy a Raincover on Amazon
  • Water Bottle: We carry foldable bottles like this one because it literally has no weight but you could surely carry any other as well. Do carry one or two 1L bottles and refill them at the stores on the way. In all probability, you may end up having to buy a bottle of water anyway. Note that a bottle of packaged water is priced at Rs. 50 though the MRP is Rs. 20. Buy a foldable bottle on Amazon
  • Sunscreen: As you get closer to the sun, the chance of damage by UV rays increases so applying SPF is essential. An SPF 30-50 sunscreen will do. Reapply after 4 hours. Linking two sunscreens I usually use! Buy face sunscreen on Amazon | Buy body sunscreen on Amazon
  • Sunglasses: These are necessary to protect your eyes.
  • Cap: Again this will protect your face and hair from the sun. I personally don’t usually wear a cap though!
  • A snack or two: If you’re going on a day hike, carry some snacks for the trek to Triund. If you run out, you can always restock from the shops on the trail but note that everything will be double the price. We carried Glucose Tablets and Gatorade which really helped keep our energy levels up.
  • Stick/Hiking Pole: You can either bring your own hiking pole if you have one or rent a stick from the store at the checkpoint. It costs Rs. 100 to rent a stick and on returning it you get Rs. 50 back.
  • Cash: Google Pay etc. don’t work very well on the route as connectivity is dodgy. Best to carry at least Rs. 2,000. Even if you go up there and decide to stay the night, you’ll have cash on you to pay up!
  • Govt. ID Card: You may need this at the checkpoint depending on the time your start your hike.

Also, depending on the month you’re travelling in, day hikers can also carry a woollen layer like a jacket or sweatshirt. I would always carry a wind cum rain jacket in any season but that’s up to you!

For campers only (in addition to the above)

It gets really chilly at night you will need to carry woollen layers in addition to some other items. While you’re hiking you won’t feel cold at all, so all your woollens will be in your bag. These woollens will add a bit of weight to your bag so stressing on this again – carry a good, sturdy, well-padded backpack. It is best to shop for items given below at Marks and Spencer (thermals), Uniqlo (down jacket and thermals), Columbia, Decathlon, and Wildcraft. All these brands are present in India!

  • Thermal: This is just needed if you’re hiking in the chillier months! We did not carry this in April and didn’t think we needed it either.
  • Sweater or Fleece: This will be the first layer after your t-shirt.
  • Padded or Down Jacket: Padded jackets are ideal for treks as they insulate even after they get wet. But if you don’t have one, carry a down jacket instead. Make sure you carry a lightweight packable jacket.
  • Windbreaker cum Raincoat or Poncho: This is extremely important. The wind at night bites and it can rain at any time. If you don’t wish to get sick it is best to buy one if you don’t already own one.
  • Gloves: Yes, it is that cold and you will probably need gloves. We sure did!
  • Wollen Cap/Beanie: Protecting your head from the cold is ultra important, even while you sleep.
  • Warm Socks: It is good practice to change your socks before you sleep on a trek. Wet socks can make you ill. Warm socks (plus a beanie) are essential to staying toasty all night.
  • Change of clothes (optional): Carry an extra change of clothes. You should change your T-shirt once you reach the campsite so you don’t fall ill wearing a wet one. A spare set of pants helps in case the one you’re wearing gets wet. That said, we still didn’t carry a set of pants to reduce weight.
  • Head Lamp: While you can get by with your phone torchlight, it is best to carry a headlamp for convenience. You can then be hands-free in the night while exploring, looking for peeing spots, or even inside your tent. I just hung mine from the centre hook of the tent and had our own bulb of sorts!

13. Are there places I can trek to beyond Triund?

Yes, you can trek further than Triund as well. If you’re planning to camp at Triund, then you can definitely hike up to Snowline Cafe the next morning (2 km further) and then hike down to Gallu Devi Temple. However, there are longer treks that go beyond Triund as well. These are as follows:

McLeodganj- Triund- Laka Glacier- McLeodganj: 10,600 ft; 11- 13 km one way; 2-3 days, moderate-difficult

McLeodganj – Triund – Laka Glacier- Indrahar Pass-McLeodganj: 14,245 ft; 4 days; 22 km one way; difficult

That’s all folks! I would love to answer any questions you may have about the trek to Triund. Do drop them below in the comments section and I’ll answer them asap. Have a fantastic trek!

Do I need downjacket and snow gloves for a Trek in the last week of march

Yes, for the down jacket, it is still quite cold. I’m not sure about snow gloves in particular but taking some warm gloves is always better.

A Guide to the Triund Trek in McLeodGanj + Insider Tips (2024)

Triund Trek in McLeodGanj

If you’re planning on doing the Triund Trek in McLeodGanj, Dharamshala, you have come to the right place!

McLeodCanj, in the state of Himachal Pradesh, is most famous for being the home of the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet. This town is close to the city of Dharamshala (a flight or night bus away from Delhi ) and tourists from all over the world come here to learn more about Buddhism and Tibetan culture.

There are plenty of interesting things to do in McLeodGanj , and this town is also home to one of the best Himalayan treks to do on your own: the trek to Triund Hill.

In this guide, you will find everything you need to know if you’re planning on trekking to Triund. You can hike to Triund in 1 or 2 days . I did this hike by myself in one day, but it is also possible to camp at Triund and hike back the next day, but more about this later!

How to do the Triund Trek in McLeodGanj

View on the way to Tirund Hill in McLeodGanj

There are two hiking trails to reach Triund Hill, and they both start in Bhagsu, which is a 20 to 30-minute walk from McLeodGanj.

While nearly everyone takes the easiest trail to hike to Triund and Back, I highly recommend making a loop and taking the easy trail to hike up and the difficult trail to hike back down.

I did it the other way around and took the difficult trail to hike up. This was my favourite one, as I only encountered two other hikers and found the landscape more beautiful here.

This guide describes how to hike up the easier way and hike back down the more difficult way. It speaks for itself that you can also do the hike the other way around as I did, though.

Tip: The way to Triund can easily be found using Maps.me. This app comes in particularly handy for the more difficult trail, as the path isn’t always as straightforward here.

Do you need a guide to hike to Triund?

Although you can hire a guide to do this trek, this is not necessary and many people hike independently. The path is easy to follow and the hike is not too difficult.

However, if you don’t have much hiking experience and would prefer to do the hike with a guide, you can book the guided Triund trek on GetYourGuide. This trek takes 2 days and includes a guide, camping and food.

Hiking from McLeodGanj to Triund

Triund Hill in Himachal Pradesh

If you’re starting in McLeodGanj, you will first have to head to Bhagsu , which is 2,5 km (1.5 mi) from McLeodGanj. You can either get here by walking or by taking a taxi.

From Bhagsu, you will have to hike (or continue the taxi drive) all the way up to the Gallu Devi Temple . This is where you will find the start of the path to Triund. It all depends on your personal pace, but it takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to get from Bhagsu to Gallu. The right path can easily be found either by asking a local or using Maps.me.

From here on, it is pretty straightforward. There are arrows marking the way to Triund and it is difficult to get lost, as there’s only one path.

It takes a total of approximately 4 to 6 hours to reach Triund (the total distance is around 10 km or 6.2 mi), depending on your personal pace.

It is good to know that there are some shops and restaurants on the trail from Gallu to Triund.

Hiking to Triund Hill

Once you reach Triund, you will have a beautiful view of the Dhauladhar Mountain Range . This includes a view of Moon Peak, Riflehorn and Arthur’s seat.

It is quite big there and this is a nice place to stay for a while (or camp if you want to do the trek in 2 days). By the time I reached Triund, the sky wasn’t clear anymore and you couldn’t really see the mountains, but this is what it looks like on a clear day:

Triund Hill on a clear day

Camping at Triund (optional)

It is possible to camp at Triund if you would like to do the hike in 2 days, although it is possible to do it in 1 day too. I didn’t stay the night at Triund myself, but I’ve heard it is amazing, as you will be able to see the sunset/sunrise and sleep under the stars.

If you want to camp at Triund , it is good to know that you can rent a tent and sleeping bags in the shops there. If you’re visiting the place during the high season, at the weekend or in the holidays, it is better to book in advance, though, as the tents might be booked out (just ask the place where you’re staying in McLeodGanj to book it for you).

Another option is to stay at the government guesthouse . This place can be booked at the Forest Department Office of Dharamshala (+91 1892-224887).

Camping at Triund

Hiking further: the Laka Glacier Trek (optional)

I didn’t do this myself, but once you reach Triund, it is possible to hike further and do the Laka Glacier Trek. This is a 2 km (1.2 mi) long, steep uphill trek and it is quite strenuous.

This being said, this trek will take you higher along the breathtaking landscapes of the Dhauladhar snow-clad mountains and Kangra Valley. As its name predicts, the Laka Glacier Trek ends at the Laka Glacier, which stands 3,200 m (10,498 ft) above sea level.

It is good to know that you will need 2 or 3 days if you decide to hike to this glacier.

Hiking back to McLeodGanj

View of Bhagsu from Triund

To hike back to McLeodGanj, you can follow the Triund – Karthani Trail , on the southern side of Triund Hill. This trail will pass the Bhagsu Waterfall before reaching the centre of Bhagsu.

Note that the Triund – Karthani Trail is not as straightforward as the trail to hike up, but it is not so hard to follow with a little help from Maps.me.

This trail was my favourite part of the hike. It is not much frequented, the landscapes are amazing and I encountered plenty of sheep and goats along the way, which gave me some nice photo opportunities.

Sheep and goats on the Karthani Trail

Difficulty of the trek to Triund

The Triund Trek is considered a moderate trek . It is not too difficult, but you will need an average fitness level to complete it.

The elevation at Triund is 2,875 m (9,432 ft), while McLeodGanj is at 2,082 m (6,831 ft), so you will ascend about 800 m (2,600 ft) during the hike. This takes a total of 4 to 6 hours and the trek covers about 10 km (6.2 mi) one way.

Although you can do this trek in one day (which is what I did and it is very doable), it will be easier if you camp at Triund and split the hike into 2 days.

If you decide to hike further to the Laka Glacier, you will have to hike up an additional 325 m (1,066 ft).

Best time to do the Triund Trek

The best time to trek to Triund is in the Summer, between the months of March and June . This is when the weather will be at its best and the views will be most clear. You can expect temperatures between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F) at this time of the year.

July to September is the monsoon season. So this is not a good time to trek to Triund unless you don’t mind the rain and slipperiness.

The Winter lasts from October to February and it is possible to do the trek to Triund during this season too. Do note that there will be snow if you’re going in January or February.

Tips for hiking to Triund

  • Make a loop rather than going down the same way as you came up (this is what most people do).
  • Use Maps.me to navigate easily.
  • Bring water , snacks and sunscreen , and wear comfortable shoes . I wore hiking boots, but this trek can also be done with sneakers.
  • Consider camping for a night to see the sunset/sunrise.

Hike to Bhagsu Waterfall, one of the best places to visit in McLeodGanj

Where to stay in McLeodGanj

There are plenty of places to stay in and around McLeodganj. You can opt for McLeodGanj itself, Bhagsu or Dharamkot.

While McLeodGanj is the place where the Dalai Lama lives, Bhagsu is a 20-minute walk from here and it is quieter. Dharamkot is a 30-minute walk from Bhagsu and it is also quieter than McLeodGanj.

Although McLeodGanj is often referred to as Dharamshala , I would not stay in this city, as it is located 5 km (3.1 mi) downhill of McLeodGanj and it is far from the main tourist attractions.

I stayed in Bhagsu as well as in McLeodGanj while I was there, you will find my top recommendations below:

  • Shree Guest House ( ⭐ 8.3) : Shree Guest House was my favourite place to stay in the area. This guesthouse is located in a quiet area in McLeodGanj, just a 5 to 10-minute walk from the main street. The rooms are nice and clean, there’s a shared balcony, the wifi is good and Nadish, the owner, is amazing!
  • Hotel Norbu House (⭐ 9.3): If you’re looking for a more luxurious place to stay with a beautiful view, Hotel Norbu House is the place for you. This hotel is located in a quiet street, near the centre of McLeodGanj and it has all the amenities you might need.
  • Eevolve Dharamkot (⭐ 8.3): Located in Dharamkot, this eco hostel offers beautiful rooms and a garden. This is a great place to stay if you’re planning on staying in the area for a little longer and would like to enrol in yoga classes, for example.

Triund Trek in McLeodGanj: Final thoughts

The trek to Triund is one of the most popular hikes in Dharamshala and it is easy to understand why. Not only are the landscapes beautiful, but this is also a trek that can easily be done independently.

All in all, this was a trek I really enjoyed, even though the sky wasn’t clear anymore by the time I reached Triund. If I would do it again, I would camp at Triund as this increases the chance of having a clear view.

I hope that this guide was clear and that you have found exactly what you were looking for. Let me know in the comments below if you have any questions. I’m updating this post frequently.

A Must visit

Holy bhagsunag temple.

Check out the awesome Bhagsunag Temple! This super old Hindu temple has been around for over 5000 years and is all about worshipping Lord Shiva. It's located in the village of Bhagsu, just a short 2 km away from Mcleodganj, with a beautiful view of the Dhauladhar range in the background.

Triund | the Trekkers Paradise - Sheeraz Ahmad

Once upon a time in Indian mythology, there was a big battle between the snake god, Nag devata, and King Bhagsu. The king had taken water from a special lake called Nagdal Lake, which made the snake god very angry. But in the end, King Bhagsu was defeated and then forgiven by the snake god. The place where this all happened was named Bhagsu Nag.

At the entrance of the Shiva temple in Bhagsu Nag, there is a bell made of white tiles and a marble step that leads inside. Once you’re in the temple, you’ll see a special five-faced Shivling and a small white statue of Nandi, the bull. The temple is surrounded by two pretty pools that are said to have magical healing powers.

So, if you ever visit Bhagsu Nag, make sure to check out the temple and maybe even take a dip in the sacred pools for good luck!

When you walk down the road to Bhagsu Temple, you’ll pass by a bunch of cool shops selling all sorts of fun stuff like wind chimes, dream catchers, and super trendy hippie clothes. The temple is easy to get to by road, and from there you can check out the awesome Bhagsu waterfall and even keep going to Triund for more adventures!

September is the coolest time to check out this spot because they throw a big fair every year that brings in tons of people from all over. The temple is always packed with folks having a blast and celebrating. Locals say that Radhasthmi is the absolute best time to come visit this temple.

Dharamkot Mini Israel

Dharamkot is like a small, cool village in the Himalayas that's known for yoga. It's a great place to take a break from the real world for a few days. The best thing about Dharamkot is the awesome vibe there. It's like a mix of magic, spiritual energy from the Himalayas, happy people, peace and quiet, and feeling connected to nature. You can hear mountain birds, the wind blowing through the trees, and even smell farm animals in the distance. It's perfect for doing yoga and meditation in the morning. Dharamkot has amazing views of the Kangra Valley and the Dhauladhar mountains. There are also meditation centers there where you can relax and find your inner peace. Dharamkot is a cool place that's both chill and exciting at the same time.

Triund | the Trekkers Paradise - Sheeraz Ahmad

Hey there! So, in this village, there’s only one main road that takes you to the super popular café called Trek and Dine. But once you pass the café, the road turns into a narrow pathway that’s perfect for taking a relaxing stroll through the forest. Along the way, you can check out cool spots like Galu Temple, waterfalls, and hiking trails. Eventually, the pathway leads to a flag temple that not many tourists know about. It’s like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered!

Triund | the Trekkers Paradise - Sheeraz Ahmad

Dharamkot is the place to be if you love food! There are so many awesome cafes like Trek and Dine, Moonlight café, and more. Each café has its own special dishes like lasagnas, pasta, hummus, and pita bread. And don’t forget about the famous Bhagsu Cake – it’s a must-try dessert! This yummy treat has a crunchy pie crust with caramel sauce and your choice of dark or white chocolate. Plus, if you’re vegan, there are plenty of options for you too at places like Vegan Café, Once in Nature, and Caterpillar. So many delicious choices to try in this village!

Dharamkot is a village that’s just starting to get popular with tourists, so most places to stay are home stays or guest houses. There are a few backpacker hostels, but they’re pretty basic. If you want to stay for a while, it’s easy to find a room with a bathroom and kitchen. Most of the home stays aren’t listed online, but you can find them easily and they’re usually affordable. You can just show up and ask around for a place to stay, usually with local families. There’s also a backpacker’s hostel with shared rooms and lounges at Flugler.
