We travel a lot, and our son attends local classrooms along the way. We noticed primary schools in Europe let kids be kids.

  • My husband and I homeschool our son, which allows us to travel.
  • In addition to his homeschooling curriculum, he has attended schools in different countries.
  • We've noticed differences — and similarities — between the schools he attended in Europe and the US.

Insider Today

My son has been homeschooled, essentially, his whole academic life. Because of this, we're able to travel multiple times each month without worrying about him missing school. I am a writer and my husband is a film and TV composer as well as an investor, which also makes this possible.

Not only can we take my son's work with us, but he has also been able to experience schooling in various countries by joining classrooms and homeschool groups throughout our travels. His curriculum is based in the United States, but integrating local schools helps him learn different languages, culture, and of course, make friends.

Because we have spent extended periods of time in Portugal, the Netherlands, and Italy, we have been able to experience how a few schools in these places approach education more intimately. While we've experienced some similarities across the schools he's attended, like classroom size and curriculum structure, we also noticed distinct differences in approach.

School was low-stress in the Netherlands

Where we lived in the Netherlands, children as young as four years old often happily walked themselves to school. The school my son attended in the Netherlands was run like a well-oiled machine, yet they still maintained a playful and innocent atmosphere.

The school administrators were strict about timeliness — I often witnessed that if students arrived even one minute late, they were considered late, with no exceptions. However, discipline for kids was simply a stern talking-to from teachers. Teachers told us that if children had issues with each other, they were expected to sort it amongst themselves, while the adults observed from a distance.

Friends who had kids at other schools in the Netherlands confirmed that this focus on independent conflict resolution with minimal adult intervention was common. Play was the central focus of the day for children until they were about seven years old. The primary focus during those early years was on children learning to coexist with one another rather than academics.

Learning to swim was also a significant focus in the early years in the Netherlands and considered more critical than learning to read by many locals we spoke with. Once compulsory, now only some schools integrate swim classes into the curriculum. Given the numerous canals everywhere, this emphasis is understandable.

Related stories

Children at my son's school spent a large portion of their day outdoors, regardless of the weather, which parents said was typical. The Dutch often say, "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing." At school, my son assisted in preparing daily vegan meals, and occasionally brought home crafts to do.

Friends who had older kids in the Netherlands told me that the homework increased once they hit middle school, where there was more of an emphasis on academics. I truly appreciated this low-stress setting we encountered during our son's primary school years.

We saw more emphasis on collaboration than individual performance in Portugal

In Portugal, there was an emphasis on projects that children completed together to enhance their collaboration skills, and praise was often based on the collaboration itself rather than individual performance.

We noticed that children rarely had packed schedules filled with extracurricular activities like in the US, and often stayed up very late at night with their families, based on our own observations and talking to Portuguese parents.

While I adored the genuinely "crunchy" vibe of the schools my son attended and the kindness of the teachers, I believed our son would benefit from more structure and consistency in his routine . So, for a time, we supplemented even more than our usual load of schoolwork at home to provide more academic consistency during his short stint at a Portuguese school and eventually transitioned to only homeschooling again and met with a homeschool group for field trips.

We noticed less encouragement of competition in Italy than in the US

At the school my son goes to in Italy , it was immediately evident that food and dining is treated as an important part of the school day. Students are given a proper dining experience with formal table settings. The primary schools get a full two-hour break in the middle of the day including lunch and free time, known as riposo , lending to a much longer school day overall.

Football (soccer) is also taken seriously, so most schools we visited have specialized schedules specifically for children who play and perhaps want to pursue it as a career. Participation in the arts, football, and music is encouraged, but football is by far the most popular activity at our school and in our region.

As for the emphasis on the curriculum, so far, it seems far less rigid than in the US. Cognitive and social skills appear to be the primary objectives, rather than a heavy focus on testing. There is almost no encouragement of competition that we witnessed, as collaboration seems to be the focus until middle school.

My son is not yet in middle school, but from what I've heard both in preliminary conversations with schools, open days, and from Facebook groups with other expat parents , it sounds like middle school takes a more rigorous academic approach across Europe. For example, some countries, like Italy, expect children to know their primary focus of study by the time they enter high school, and then are placed in a specialized school program geared towards that interest area. Middle school seems to help form this decision by focusing on more specific subjects like robotics, engineering and anatomy, as they are already expected to know how to work together.

The unifying theme we observed throughout the schools in Europe that our son has attended, regardless of the country, was to allow children to be children and let the serious learning come later. At almost all the schools my son attended or toured, more importance was placed on children's ability to coexist together, work on projects and tasks collaboratively, than on core subjects like math, science, and history in those early years.

Each country had something we cherished and something we had to learn to adjust to. Overall, compared to our group homeschooling experience in the US, I would say that the primary schools in the European cities we joined were far less stressful. The academics seemed to get prioritized more as the kids got older. This makes me really appreciate how the lower grades focused on collaboration and coexistence.

What we know about the fatal shooting of Loletha Hall during Uber gig

William Brock is charged with murdering Hall at his home

It was a common scam that ended with an uncommon outcome, tragically in an Ohio driveway.

William J. Brock fatally shot an Uber driver because he wrongly assumed she was part of a scheme to extract $12,000 in supposed bond money for a relative, authorities said this week. Loletha Hall was a victim of the same con, summoned by the grifters to Brock’s house to retrieve a purported package for delivery.

Brock later told investigators he believed Hall arrived to get the money the scammers wanted.

He is now facing murder charges, to which he’s pleaded not guilty. Hall’s family is grieving. And Uber is helping investigators to try to catch whoever was behind the attempted swindle.

The grift is commonly known as a grandparent scam or fraud, exploiting older people’s love for their family, experts say. Callers claim to be anyone from grandchildren to police, telling victims something terrible happened and that their younger relative needs money.

we travel facebook

Here’s what we know about the shooting and the investigation so far:

What exactly happened?

Brock, 81, received scam calls the morning of March 25 at his home in South Charleston, a town of about 1,800 people between Dayton and Columbus. The calls regarded an incarcerated relative and “turned to threats and a demand for money,” according to a statement from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

While Brock was on the phone, Hall got a request through the Uber app to pick up a package from Brock’s house for delivery, the sheriff’s office said. Hall, 61, of Columbus, was unaware of the attempted scam.

“Upon being contacted by Ms. Hall, Mr. Brock produced a gun and held her at gunpoint, making demands for identities of the subjects he had spoken with on the phone,” the sheriff’s office said.

Hall was unarmed and never threatened Brock or made any demands of him, the sheriff’s office said.

Brock took Hall’s cellphone and refused to let her leave, the sheriff’s office said. When she tried to get back into her car, Brock shot her. He shot her a second time and a third time during subsequent scuffles.

Brock then called 911 to report he shot someone on his property who was trying to rob him.

Police body camera footage shows him briefly discussing what he said had happened.

“I’m sure glad to see you guys out here because I’ve been on this phone for a couple hours with this guy trying to say to me I had a nephew in jail and had a wreck in Charleston and just kept hanging on and needing bond money,” Brock said. “And this woman was supposed to get it.”

The footage shows investigators discussing $12,000 sitting on a table in Brock’s house.

The footage also shows a Clark County Sheriff’s Office detective in Brock’s house talking on the phone with a man who was talking to Brock earlier. He identified himself as an officer and told the detective, “You’re going to be in trouble.”

When the detective identified herself as an actual police officer, the phone disconnected. During a subsequent phone call with the man, the detective told him the Uber driver was in a serious accident, in the hospital and “not doing well.”

The man told the detective he’d be there in 20 minutes. He was not.

Brock was indicted on Monday of charges of murder, assault and kidnapping. He posted $200,000 bail and was released from the Clark County Jail on Wednesday. His attorney, Paul Kavanagh, did not immediately return an email seeking comment on Friday.

How common are these grandparent scams?

Grandparent scams have become increasingly common in the last 10 to 15 years — in part because of the abundance of personal information available about people online, said Anthony Pratkanis, an emeritus psychology professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Criminals retrieve specific details about someone’s relative on social media and use the information to convince victims that their loved one is in trouble, said Pratkanis, whose research includes fraud crimes.

“Basically what the criminal is doing is taking advantage of our human nature,” he said. “You’re in a panic state, high emotional arousal. It’s a fear appeal. And the best way to get rid of that fear is to give the criminal that money.”

Fraudsters typically prefer financial transactions that don’t require physical proximity, such as wire transfers, gift cards or cryptocurrency, Pratkanis said. This case is unusual because the scammers deployed Hall as an unsuspecting money mule.

“Most people in today’s kind of scams don’t really have interactions with the criminal — there’s a distance,” Pratkanis said. “But when there isn’t, there’s an opportunity for the anger of being victimized to cause the victim to take action.”

Uber said Wednesday that it was helping investigators look into an account that sent Hall to Brock’s home. The ride-hailing company described Hall’s death as “a horrific tragedy.”

‘A bond like no other’

An  obituary  for Hall described her as the parent of a son and a stepson, a devoted member of her church and a talented cook known for delicious pound cakes.

She retired from Ohio’s Regional Income Tax Agency and also worked in behavioral health, at a school and for Uber. She studied horticulture at Ohio State and started a janitorial business.

At a memorial service  that was streamed online , her son Mario Hall spoke of how close they were even though they lived in different states, often speaking on the phone multiple times a day. He said they “had a bond like no other.”

“Thank you for all your sacrifices and all the things you have instilled in me,” he said. “You are the best mom that anyone could ask for. And I promise to continue to make you proud.”

I used this travel pack as my carry-on for an eight-day trip — it’s officially the best bag I’ve ever traveled with

we travel facebook

At this point in my life, I pride myself on being somewhat of an experienced traveler. In the last six months alone, I’ve been to five different countries, so it’s safe to say I do it often enough to know a thing or two about flight prep.

With airlines cracking down on personal items and prices soaring for checked bags, a solid carry-on travel pack that meets flight criteria is more important than ever before — and as a result, I’ve become extremely picky with my bag choices.

After plenty of baggage failures, I finally found a great one: The Cotopaxi 35L Travel Pack. I chose this pick as my carry-on for an eight-day trip to Guatemala after seeing it all over JFK Airport in New York City recently. I just had to give it a try.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack

Allpa 35L Travel Pack

Allpa 35L Travel Pack

What is the cotopaxi allpa 35l travel pack.

When I first received this travel pack, my first thought was that it was the perfect hybrid between a suitcase and a backpack. The Allpa 35 opens up in a clamshell-style, like your typical suitcase, and has three total internal mesh compartments: one large compartment on the right side and one subdivided compartment (with three sections) on the left. It also has a padded laptop and tablet sleeve , with shortcut zippers to the main compartment for easy access while on the go.

As the name suggests, this travel pack has a 35L capacity, so it’s compatible with most carry-on airline standards . I flew on a budget airline for my trip to Guatemala, and I was worried I wouldn’t get to use the bag as a carry-on since it appeared rather large (I really packed this thing to the brim!), but I had no issues at all.

What I like about the product

It packs way more than you’d think.

According to the brand, this is “the ultimate adventure travel pack, ideal for three to five days away.” This is a claim I can confirm was slightly on the conservative side, considering I packed for a full eight days in this bag. While Guatemala has a warmer climate — hence why the clothing I packed really only consisted of smaller items like shorts and T-shirts — I did go on a major hike that required more gear, and I was able to still fit all my essentials in this bag.

That said, I think if I had traveled to a colder climate that necessitated larger, thicker clothing, I might not have been able to fit eight days worth of apparel — so keep that in mind while packing!

we travel facebook

The minor details have a major impact

When it comes to this bag, trust me when I say it’s  all  in the details. It has anti-theft zippers, which gives me peace of mind while walking through crowded airports or train stations. It also has a top zippered pocket so you can easily access  essentials  like your wallet or passport while on the go.

For the adventurer, there are also carabiner loops for clipping on any extra gear you may need on your trip (i.e. hiking shoes, additional bags, etc.). But my favorite detail? The padded straps. I overpacked this bag when I traveled to Central America, and it was  heavy . The straps were thick and comfortable, and they didn’t dig into my shoulders no matter how much weight was in the bag. The removable hip straps also helped with support while carrying a heavier pack.

What to consider

While I find it hard to come up with any downsides to this travel pack , some might find that its lack of external pockets is a bit inconvenient for those who like to keep most things super accessible. This bag also doesn’t have a designated water bottle sleeve, but I guess you could hook a water bottle to the carabiner loops if you really wanted to.

Ultimately, this bag seems to combine the comfort, accessibility and flexibility of a backpack with the spacious aspects of a suitcase. Whether you’re on a lengthy trip in Central America or a weekend getaway in Boston, this bag will have you covered — and I’ll be using it on every trip I have planned from here on out. In fact, I’m going to Iceland soon, and you can rest assured this bag will be coming with me.

So, sure, the travel booking landscape is brimming with AI, but at WTD, we offer a distinctly personalized and budget-conscious approach to luxury travel . We're not just suggesting destinations; we're crafting unforgettable adventures tailored to your unique desires.

●      Transparency with AI: "How transparent is World Trip Deal with travellers regarding how AI is used in the booking process? Do they have any control over the AI recommendations?"

Mahdi Nourian emphasizes transparency at World Trip Deal (WTD), clearly outlining AI’s role in the booking process:

1. Clear Communication: WTD provides easy-to-understand explanations where AI impacts recommendations.

2. AI Preferences: Travelers can tailor their AI interactions by setting preferences for travel style, interests, and pace.

3. Curated Transparency: Instead of complex technical details, WTD highlights when recommendations are AI-driven, based on travel trends and user behaviors.

5. Human Expertise: AI is enhanced by human experts who provide insights to balance and personalize the travel experience.

WTD’s approach ensures that travelers understand and control AI’s input, enhancing their booking experience while keeping personal choice paramount.

Future of Travel and WTD:

●      AI and Sustainability: "Is there a role for AI in promoting sustainable travel practices within World Trip Deal's platform?"

Mahdi Nourian: at World Trip Deal we emphasize AI’s role in sustainable travel with eco-friendly suggestions and carbon offset options. WTD prioritizes user experience, innovates continuously, and ensures data transparency.

This approach not only enhances travel but also promotes responsible tourism and builds user trust in AI integration.

Finally, let's explore the broader impact of AI on the travel industry.

Transforming Travel:

●      Hyper-Personalization: AI will personalize travel experiences beyond imagination. Imagine itineraries tailored not just to destinations but to your mood, preferences, and even real-time data. AI will transform travel from a one-size-fits-all experience to a truly personal journey.

●      Streamlined Booking & Management: Travel booking will become effortless. Imagine AI automating tedious tasks like visa applications, travel insurance, and even managing itinerary changes with ease.

●      Accessibility & Inclusivity: AI can break down language barriers and assist travelers with disabilities. Imagine real-time translation tools and AI-powered accessibility recommendations, making travel a more inclusive experience for everyone.

However, AI also comes with challenges:

●      Ethical Considerations: Transparency and data privacy are crucial. AI algorithms need to be free from bias and ensure responsible data usage.

●      Human Interaction: Travel advisors still have a vital role. AI shouldn't replace the human touch. We envision a future where AI complements human expertise, offering a dynamic and personalized travel experience.

So, there you have it. World Trip Deal (WTD) is shaking things up in the travel industry with a potent blend of AI and affordability.

From personalized itineraries to hidden gem recommendations, WTD is making luxury travel accessible for the budget-conscious adventurer.

But WTD's vision extends beyond booking. They're looking to leverage AI throughout your entire journey, offering real-time recommendations, fostering a travel community, and even promoting sustainable practices.

As AI continues to reshape the travel landscape, WTD is poised to be a leader in this exciting transformation.

So, the next time you're dreaming of an escape, ditch the outdated guidebooks and endless price comparisons.

Head over to World Trip Deal and let AI craft the perfect adventure for you. After all, travel should be an unforgettable experience, not a logistical nightmare. And with WTD, it can be just that.

Shiny Bellsprout with regular Weepinbell and Victreebel behind it

Pokémon Go is having a Bellsprout Community Day event on April 20 from 2-5 p.m. in your local time .

As expected with a Community Day event, Bellsprout will spawn in huge numbers in Pokémon Go with a high chance for it to appear shiny. There are also several other bonuses and perks, which we’ve listed out below.

How do I catch a shiny Bellsprout in Pokémon Go?

As per old research by the now-defunct website The Silph Road (via Wayback Machine ), Shiny rates on Community Days are about 1 in 24, which means that if you keep playing throughout the three-hour window, you should find quite a few shiny Pokémon.

Shiny Bellsprout, Weepinbell, and Victreebel with their regular forms. Shiny Bellsprout gets yellow leaves, Weepinbell gets a green tint, and Victreebel gets a green and brown makeover with blue lips.

If you’re short on time or Poké Balls, you can pop an Incense , then quickly tap each Bellsprout to check for shiny ones, running from any that aren’t shiny. Notably, any Bellsprout you’ve already tapped will face where your player is standing, so that should help identify which ones you may have already checked.

What Community Day move does Bellsprout’s evolution learn?

If you evolve Weepinbell into Victreebel from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. in your local time, it will learn the fast move Magical Leaf.

If you miss out on evolving it during this period, you will likely be able to evolve it during a Community Day weekend event in December to get Magical Leaf. If you don’t want to wait, you can use an Elite TM to get the move.

How does Victreebel do in the Pokémon Go meta?

You can use Victreebel in raids and gyms with Magical Leaf and Leaf Blade, but know that it is at the bottom rung when it comes to grass-type attackers. It’s usable and fine, but it gets outclassed by many things, like Kartana and every grass-type starter Pokémon. Victreebel may be better as a poison-type attacker, even more so when it’s a Shadow Victreebel, but it still falls behind popular picks like Roserade or Mega Beedrill.

PvP expert JRE47 says that Magical Leaf is an improvement for Victreebel in PvP, giving it an edge against common opponents, especially if it’s a Shadow Victreebel.

How do I make the most of Bellsprout Community Day?

The following bonuses will be active during Bellsprout Community Day:

  • Tripled Stardust for catching Pokémon
  • Doubled candy for catching Pokémon
  • Doubled chance for level 31+ trainers to get XL candy from catching Pokémon
  • Incense lasts three hours
  • Lure Modules lasts three hours
  • Bellsprout special photobombs when taking snapshots
  • One additional special trade
  • Stardust cost halved for trading

That said, you should definitely pop a Star Piece and an Incense and try to nab some powerful Bellsprout.

If you can Mega Evolve Venusaur, Beedrill, Gengar, Sceptile, Groudon, or Abomasnow , you’ll score additional Bellsprout Candy per catch.

In addition to all this, Niantic is still running special four-star raids from 5-10 p.m., where if you clear the Weepinbell raid, Bellsprout will spawn in a 300-meter radius around the gym for 30 minutes. These raids cannot be done remotely. If the usual 2-5 p.m. spawn increase doesn’t get you the Bellsprout you wanted, you can try raiding for another chance.
