Yercaud Tourism And Travel Guide

Yercaud is a hill station in the Shervarayan range of hills in the Eastern Ghats of India . The hills are an outcrop in the Salem District of Tamil Nadu , in the south of India.

Yercaud, as is true of all hill stations, is a relaxed sojourn in the midst of nature. Although smaller than Ooty the ‘Queen of Hill Stations’, Yercaud is picturesque enough to be called the ‘Princess of Hill Stations’. For years, Yercaud had been inhabited by tribal clans, until Sir Thomas Munro who was the Governor of Madras Presidency stumbled upon this place in the early 19th century. With the initiatives of more British administrators like David Cockburn and Dr. Wallich, the untamed Yeri (lake) and Kaadu (forest) transformed into the thriving hill station of Yercaud, complete with coffee and spice plantations and fruit orchards. Deep into the backwoods of the reserved forests on the slopes of Yercaud live bison, smaller mammals and a plethora of birds. Yercaud is a simple, unassuming hill station, most ideal even for a day or weekend holiday getaway.

If you would like to take a trip to Yercaud, our travel and tourism guide will help you plan a memorable trip to the hill station.

How to Reach

How to Reach: Yercaud Tourism And Travel Guide

Yercaud lies very close to the cities of Bengaluru , Salem and Coimbatore . You could visit Yercaud on a day’s trip from these cities. The easiest way to reach Yercaud would be to travel by train to Salem and then proceed by road to Yercaud.

You can book a flight from Chennai to the nearest airport at Salem.   There is a taxi stand outside the airport and you could book a cab to Yercaud.

There are several trains chugging into Salem Rail station from all major cities round the country. Again, you can hire a cab to Yercaud or to the bus stand and proceed to Yercaud by bus.

It’s an absolute breeze driving up the winding slopes to Yercaud from Salem or Bengaluru. There are buses aplenty from Salem to Yercaud. It takes about an hour and 15 mins to arrive at Yercaud from Salem. Then there are those adventurous ones that ride a bicycle up the hill.

Getting Around:

If you are not driving up to Yercaud on your own, you could find auto rickshaws or cabs to take you around the hill station. But some areas, especially around the Lake, can be covered on foot.

Weather and the Best Time to Visit

Weather and the Best Time to Visit: Yercaud Tourism And Travel Guide

Yercaud has modest rains in monsoon, cool winters and warm summers; so the best tourist times are from October-June.

Summer (March – June):

Summer’s great because summer time in the plains is hot and sweltering and up here it’s mildly warm and pleasing. Summer is the most inviting tourist season and it does get crowded at times. Annual Flower shows brighten up the atmosphere further.

Monsoon (July – September):

There might be moderate to heavy rainfall during these months. You might not be able to do a whole lot of sightseeing. But monsoon turns the whole region so verdant and green that you might choose clear daylight hours for a day’s trip and back.

Winter (October – February):

Winter is misty and luxuriant after the monsoon has rained away. There might be occasional showers in December from the retreating northeast monsoon. It’s ideal for photography and long drives up the hill. Gear up for cold winter nights with bonfires.

Things to Do

Things to Do: Yercaud Tourism And Travel Guide

32 km Loop Road:

This is one of the best things to do in your itinerary. The 32 km Loop Road begins from Yercaud Lake, zips past a beautiful landscape fringed by coffee and pepper plantations and tiny villages before returning to the Lake side. The tour is ideal for photography and picnic by the plantations.

Arthur’s Seat:

Yet another view point that gives a bird’s eye view of the town of Yercaud, Yercaud Lake and the Shervarayan Peak. If you take the steep climb up north about 1 km from the town centre, you’d have reached Arthur’s Seat.

White Elephant’s Tooth:

These white quartz rocks standing in stark contrast to the greenery around, are said to be the remains of a meteorite. You would find them on the southern side of the Shervarayan hills, on the eastern side of the Ghat Road. The White Elephant’s Tooth that is about 120 ft high is a trekkers’ delight, although the rocks crumble as one descends!

Kottachedu Teak Forest:

Home to Yercaud’s wild flora and fauna, the teak forest is a lovely place for a stroll or a drive. Check out the Vanier River that meanders through the Forest. Said to have been cultivated over lands abandoned by the hill tribes, the Teak Forest is under the care of the State Government. The Kottachedu Teak Forest is about 11 km from Yercaud.

Veera Anjaneya Temple:

The Veera Anjaneya Temple at Muluvi is situated in such a beautiful lonely locale surrounded by flowering shrubs, creepers and tall trees. The temple is on the Nagalur to Bengaluru Road and has a meditation Hall, library and accommodation as well.

Maintained by the Horticultural Society, the Anna Park is worth spending an evening exploring the place. This is one of the venues for the annual flower shows. Check out the Japanese Park, with its unique Bonsai collections.

Festivals: Yercaud Tourism And Travel Guide

Yercaud comes alive with the summer festivals that coincide with the annual tribal festival at the Shervarayan temple in May. Lakhs of flowers are displayed at various venues, with thematic floral structures with anthurium, carnations and roses promising a visual treat. Dog shows, photography and healthy baby contests, tribal cookery shows and a boat race for tourists add zing to the festivities. Special buses run from Salem to Yercaud and all the way to Pagoda Point, Lady’s Seat and Shervarayan Temple.

Shopping: Yercaud Tourism And Travel Guide

The little hill station would obviously have anything that is natural and organic. Go in for coffee powder or beans, pure honey, cardamom and pepper, figs, oranges, jackfruits and avocados grown on the slopes and of course, homemade chocolates. You could also invest in simple winter clothes and a supply of perfumes, essential oils as well as medicated and aromatherapy oils. When you are driving back home via Salem, don’t forget to pick up a parcel of Salem’s favourite street food called Thattu Vadai to eat on the way. They are rather like crispy fried cookie sandwiches with veggies and chutney fillings and so particular to Salem.

Yercaud Itinerary – A Virtual Tour of the Best Places

Let me take you on a virtual tour of the hills. Thanks to the large number of techies living in Bangalore, Yercaud has emerged as an exotic weekend getaway. It’s not as crowded as Ooty or Kodaikanal and is also just 205km from Bangalore.

Following the shortest route you will take about 5 hours to reach Yercaud if you start off early by 6 am.  This includes a breakfast halt at A2B.

Yercaud is enveloped by the scintillating Shevaroy Hills.  The undulating hills are covered in orange groves, coffee, fruits, and spice plantations.

It got its name from the words “Yeri” which means lake and “Kaddu” which means forest. Couldn’t be more apt given that the township here is built around an opulent lake surrounded by forests.

I have updated this post with the latest information about Yercaud as of 2023.

32-km Loop Road

32 km loop road in Yercaud with dense forests and hilly views on both sides

You adventure in Yercaud begins with the 32-km loop road that has numerous hairpins along the scenic Eastern Ghats. It’s the scenes that unfold here that make Yercaud one of the best places for a road trip from Bangalore . The road leads you to the colonial-era hill station of Yercaud.

There are barricades and mirrors on the turns to help drivers, but you need to be careful. You can also go for a hike on this road if you are indeed up to it. With coffee plantations, spice farms on one side, and hill-forests on the other, this is a mesmerizing experience.

On you way to Yercaud from Bangalore take this scenic tour before you reach the hotel. You will feel like stopping at the various viewpoints in this journey.

Boat in the Emerald Lake aka Yercaud Lake

Watching the sparkling Emerald Lake at the center of Yercaud from our boat

The first thing to do after lunch is to head straight to the Emerald lake. Did you know this is the only natural lake in a South Indian hill station ? You will enjoy the scenic forests around and the floating fountain in the lake when you go boating.

Thrive in the biodiversity of the Deer Park

A pair of spotted deer

After this enjoy some snacks at the Yercaud lake and walk towards the deer park. It is also known as the eco-tourism park for amazing biodiversity. Imagine walking in a park with deer, peafowls, and ducks taking an evening walk with you.

Walk to the Botanical Garden

Keep walking a little more and you will reach the botanical garden. This green oasis has 3000 trees and 18000 shrubs spread over the 18 hectares of land. It’s truly a delight to senses… and lungs.

Some adventure activities at Anna Park

A beautiful park in the hills with pine trees, and decorative plants near the Emerald Lake - Anna Park is a highlight of Yercaud Trip Plan with family

Anna Park is another small beautiful park near the lake. Here you can enjoy quad bike riding and zip-lining. It’s equally interesting for children and adults, making it a perfect spot for families in the evening.

See the mesmerizing sunset at Lady’s Seat

Sunset at Lady's Seat in Yercaud Itinerary

Remember that you are in the East and here the sun sets earlier than Bangalore. After enjoying your time in the lake and gardens it’s time to drive to this famous viewpoint.

It’s called the Lady’s Seat. A revered English lady used to spend the evenings watching the sunset on this rock. Thus this unassuming place got its name.

Day2: Start with Sunrise at Pagoda Point

A photo with friends at Pagoda Point - one of the best places to visit in Yercaud

Our hotel was very close to the Pagoda hill-top. So I woke up early in the morning to hike to the Pagoda point on my own. Somehow, I just lost my way and went and explored the valley and came back for breakfast. Then we asked the hotel managers and set out for our trip to the real place.

Pagoda point is also known as Pyramid Point and it got its name from the for piles of four stones that have been arranged in the shape of the Pyramid. Away from the tourist crowd, this place is best enjoyed in the early morning on a clear day.

Near Pagoda point, there is a Rama temple where the locals visit to seek blessings.

Temple at Pagoda Point - Yercaud itinerary

Offbeat Norton’s bungalow and Bear’s Cave

Return to your hotel for breakfast and check out. The Norton’s Bunglow is a secret destination on the way to Shevaroy Temple road. This quintessential English bungalow has inspired many Bollywood scenes. It is the oldest known bunglow in this hill station. A rich British Lawyer from Chennai constructed it here.

The Bear’s cave situated in a private coffee estate near the Norton Bungalow is a craft of nature. Some believe that there used to be a secret tunnel inside for the royals to escape during emergency.

Montfort School

The charming garden of Montfort School - Yercaud

You might not think of visiting a school on your trip somewhere, but Montfort School is special. You can get permission to enter this prestigious and historic school on the weekends.

The marvelous architecture of the buildings here will leave you awestruck. There’s also a small zoo inside the campus.

A heritage building in European style of architecture that serves as a school

You will find some of the largest and best boarding schools of India in these British-era hill stations. Another such heritage school that has become a massive tourist is the Dr. Graham’s Homes in Kalimpong. Know more about the Himalayan hill station in my Kalimpong travel blog .

Tipperary viewpoint

This is another viewpoint from where you can get mesmerizing views of the Shevaroy hills.

Trek to the delightful Killyur Falls

yercaud tourism guide

Kiliyur Falls is located at a distance of 4 km from the Bus Stand. This beautiful cascade is hidden deep in the forest.

So, you will need to take a slant walk of 1km through the forests before reaching a flight of steps. After walking 200 plus narrow steep stairs you will reach this beautiful place.

The waterfall was underwhelming for me when we visited in December . So, you may skip it if you are short of time. Instead visit the offbeat Norton’s Bunglow. Here’s a comparison of what the falls look like in the Creative Commons pictures and what we found.

Killyur Falls -Yercaud places to visit

Servarayan Temple or Shevaroy Temple

Sitting at an altitude of 5326 feet above sea- level, The Servarayan temple occupies the highest peak of Shevaroy Hills.

It is dedicated to the Hindu deity Servarayan and his consort Kaveri Amma. It offers a spectacular view of the Mettur Dam and the entire valley.  This too requires a short trek, so you need to watch your time, if you have to return the same day.

Ending the Yercaud itinerary with a throwback selfie to our memorable trip with friends on a Christmas Weekend.

How to reach Yercaud?

The nearest big cities near Yercaud are Bangalore and Chennai. It’s very easy to reach Yercaud from either of these two places by car. There are overnight buses from Bangalore which leave on Friday, and also in the early morning on Saturday.

The morning buses tend to be late, so I’d prefer the overnight buses on Friday. That way you will reach Yercaud in the early morning and have a lot of time to explore.

It is just 35 km from Salem, making Yercaud a perfect destination for a one day trip from Salem .

I was sure that I would be reading about Yercaud today. I have been to this place during my stay in Bangalore and because it was my last trip before leaving Bangalore for good, I have some fond memories of the trip.

Thanks Sonia. I too enjoyed Yercaud, mainly because it was not as crowded as the nearby hill stations.

I apologise, but, in my opinion, you are not right. I am assured. I can defend the position. Write to me in PM, we will discuss.

Hi, Thanks for your comment. I don’t know what’s controversial about the itinerary but I’m interested to listen to your defense 🙂

For breathtaking panoramic views of Salem city and the plains below, head to Lady's Seat. The Lady’s Seat is a rock in the form of a seat in between the clouds, mist, and greenery, which helps tourists to sit during their visit to the place. In the olden times, this place was the favourite hangout spot for the British, who used to host kitty parties to chit-chat along the alluring beauty of the place. That's not all! A must-see location in Yercaud is the watchtower, which is next to Lady's Seat. This watchtower is a perfect location for Lady’s Seat visitors. Similarly, at the main point of visit, there is a Children’s Seat and a Gent’s Seat, which also offer stunning vistas to the visitors. These Yercaud sightseeing sites will have a mesmerising view, especially during sunset.

Seeing the green plantations one can imagine how coffee has changed the economics of the area and increased developmental processes. For an amazing experience, make your way to Pagoda Point. The pagodas, resembling a Chinese architectural style, provide a tranquil and peaceful setting. Showcasing the scenic views of the hill station, Pagoda Point offers a top view of the hill station. From this vantage point, you can witness the convergence of four valleys, making it a unique and serene spot to enjoy nature's beauty. From these famous Yercaud tourist places, travellers can hear the various sounds of nature echoing out atop this hill station while viewing the 21 hairpin bends of Yercaud road down below, surrounded by the dense green foliage. Besides this, there lies a holy temple in between the Pagodas devoted to Lord Rama.

Location: Yercaud hills, Yercaud, India

Embrace the spiritual side of Yercaud sightseeing by visiting the Shevaroy Temple. Dedicated to Lord Shevaroyan, this temple is perched atop the Shevaroy Hills and offers a stunning view of the surroundings. Lord Shevaroyan is the primary deity of the Shevaroy temple, and the local tribal people adore him. Idols of Goddess Kaveri and Lord Shevaroyan worship these dark, winding passageways that make up this shrine. As per the locals, the temple is believed to be 2000 years old. What’s more! There is a wishing well near the temple. It is believed that reverent people would succeed in whatever they set out to do if they could toss at least one stone, three that they take from the temple into the well while facing it. Isn't that cool?

Location: Ondikadai, Salem - Yercaud Ghat Road

Timing: Monday to Sunday: 9:30 AM – 6 PM

Indulge in the sweet fragrance of thousands of roses at the Yercaud Rose Garden. It is a romantic place in Yercaud that attracts couples from all over India who can learn more about the skills and techniques of silk production in India and get hypnotised by the fragrance of rose flowers blooming around the garden. One of the historic arts of Yercaud is the skill of growing silkworms and making silk from cocoons; the silk farmers in this area have successfully preserved this art and culture for families to visit and experience. The fun fact is that the silk farms depict the history of how silk production began in India by procuring skills from the mainland of China. Visitors will find the queen of flowers, the scent of joy, and the breathtaking vistas of the garden to be an absolute delight. So, keep exploring the best places to visit in Yercaud.

Location: Yercaud, India

To get away from the stresses of life, check out the glimpses of Kiliyur Falls surrounded by dense forests, while cascading falls create a mist in the air. This waterfall falls from a height of 300 feet (91 metres) into the Kiliyur Valley. It becomes a greater attraction for leisure activities like picnics and other outdoor gatherings as the water level rises during the monsoon season. To gain access to the waterfall, visitors must climb 200 steep steps over a 2-kilometre distance. Adventure enthusiasts can take an hour's walk from where the falls are located. Isn't this great experiential exposure?

Location: Killiyur Road, Pattipadi, Tamil Nadu 636601

Timings: 8 AM - 6 PM

The place is located near the Orchidarium, which features a variety of exotic and rare orchids. The Orchidorium showcases over 250 species of orchids which are declared endangered by the horticulture department of India. Orchid enthusiasts could witness some rare Rose, Sylvan and Bamboo plants in the vicinity. That's right! The orchidarium is the best place to visit in Yercaud luring several dignitaries and celebrities from the South Indian film industry. The highlights of this orchid garden include the magnificent “Insect Eating Pitcher” plants and the “Neelakurinji” plant, which blooms only once every twelve years.

Location: Ondikadai, Salem - Yercaud Ghat Road, Yercaud

Timing: Monday to Sunday: 9 AM - 5 PM

Situated near the Lord Murugan Temple, the Bear Cave should come on your list of must-visit places in Yercaud. Primarily located in a private coffee estate near the Norton Bungalow, the cave was believed to house bears. Although the place is private property, the owner was kind enough to allow visitors to experience the place that houses bears. The locals think that the deeper canyon seen in the cave's main section, which is around seven feet below ground level, is the road leading to the cave located in the Shevaroyan temple. Thrill-seeking families can explore at least 60 feet of the cave without any obstacles.

Location: Private coffee estate near the Norton Bungalow

At a height of 1400 metres above sea level, this temple offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding hills, Servaroyan Temple along with coffee plantations, orange groves, and spice gardens. Tourists could familiarise themselves with the local idols painted in a variety of colours as well as a lamp tower in the form of a pyramid which is lit during the evenings of full moon days. A magnificent spot for adventure travellers strolling through the cardamom and coffee estates nearby. It is truly priceless to visit this lovely location with family and friends.

Location: Pavazha Kundru, Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu 606601

Timings: 9 AM - 6 PM

During the colonial era, the British loved to stay in places with a cooler climate. Beating the scorching heat was the primary reason Yercaud was a famous place among the British. Constructed for a powerful criminal lawyer from the British era, the house was built with the style of European architecture in mind. The bungalow being a private property can be visited only with prior permission from the authorities. A hike to the bungalow would feel like your dream vacation atop a hill station.

Location: Tipperary Road, (Behind Montfort School), Yercaud

yercaud tourism guide

Nestled in the Shevaroys range of hills, Yercaud opens up a paradise of sights and things to explore. The origin of the place name sums up the main attractions; yeri means lake and forest means kaadu.

Yercaud has a lovely charm about it. Explore the enamouring landscapes, go boating in the lake, discover new paths during trekking, roam around the plantations and orchard. Drop by the botanical garden and stroll along to find out innumerable species of orchids. A blend of attractions at Yercaud makes it a hugely popular tourist spot. Take a 28 km drive from Salem and you reach Yercaud. No points for guessing, you start at the Yercaud botanical garden. Bask in the beauty and fragrance of colourful flowers and a myriad of plant species.  You can't miss out the famous Orchidarium at Botanical survey of India. Marvel at the sheer number of orchid species on display. If you feel like going by the lakeside, book a boat ride and enjoy the placid water. Get the sprawling view of the lake at its best. Sit on the lush green lawns and relax yourself. Explore the farming potential of Yercaud and it prides itself as the producer of crops like coffee, orange, jackfruit, guava, black pepper, and cardamom. There is so much more to explore at Yercaud like  Lady's Seat, Shevaroy Temple, Anna Park, Bears Cave,, Pagoda Point, Kiliyur Falls, and Arthur Seat. Sounds great right, plan your trip. If possible, partake of the spirit of the summer festival held in May and have fun. Do visit the Anna park near the lake, the flower show here is famous so schedule your trip accordingly.

Yercaud Travel Guide

Charming as a blue moon and ravishing as always, the hill station of Yercaud is the perfect escape for a relaxing and reviving holiday in Tamil Nadu. Luxuriant fields, sedating ambiance, and stupendous beauty best define the popular tourist attraction of Yercaud. Located in the Salem District and tucked away in the Shevaroy Ranges in the Eastern Ghats, Yercaud is one of the most-visited hill stations in South India perched at an altitude of 1515 m above the sea level. Yercaud is called Yercaud because of the forest lake which was found here. Some people also call it 'Ooty of the poor'. It is a beautiful hill station in the district of Salem which is in Tamil Nadu, India. You can locate Yercaud on the Shevaroys range of hills in the Eastern Ghats. Yercaud is sited at an altitude of 1516 meters above the sea level of the sea. The highest point in Yercaud is the beautiful Servarayan temple, which is at 5,327 feet. Yercaud is one of the most favorable hill stations for tourists who are willing to have a Yercaud one day tour even because it is encircled by natural cliffs.

In Yercaud people mainly earn by the plantation of coffee which was basically brought to Yercaud by Africans. While having Yercaud trip you can also come across hills and fauna which still reside here.

History of Yercaud

The name Yercaud was kept by the Tamil words yeri and kaadu. Yeri means lake and kaadu mean forest. Yercaud was founded by Sir Thomas Munroe governor in 1842. In the 1820s the district collector of Salem David Cockburn made efforts to develop this place and this was the reason that he was called " father of Yercaud”. In order to develop Yercaud, he cultivated many crops like tea, pears, coffee, and even apple. Yercaud always had a cool climate so many Christians got attracted and started schools in here. The local residents of Yercaud are known as vellalas or even the Malayalis. They got drifted from Kanchipuram about 500 years ago. The population of Yercaud has never exceeded 50,000 and still, it is around 38,0000.

Shopping in Yercaud

The main source of earning in Yercaud is its a plantation of coffee which was an African gift to them. The Yercaud tourist guide would definitely tell you about the Citrus fruits grown here. When you shop in Yercaud you will get attracted to the natural things the local people sell there like oil, coffee powder, chocolate which are homemade, sweets which will make you drool, fresh cheese items, beautiful jewelry, shawls, and sweaters. While having the Yercaud city tour the local shops you will find herbs which are natural and in many ways helpful. What will be better than buying fresh and natural things which aren't available nowadays?

Yercaud itself does not have an airport, due to its remote location within the state of Tamil Nadu. It is, however, fairly close to a few airports that boast a decent level of connectivity. Yercaud nearest airport is the Salem Airport, situated about 38 km from Yercaud itself, while the second closest is in Trichirapalli or Trichy, some 165 km away. While Salem Airport only has flights to and from Chennai, the airport in Trichy offers quite a few more options both nationally and internationally, such as Bangalore, Colombo and Kuala Lumpur. It would take a little over an hour to make your way to it from the airport in Salem, while it may take as long as 4 hours to reach Yercaud from Trichy airport. There are plenty of cabs available from the airports themselves, however, so it should be a largely painless process.

Once again, Salem functions as a hub for those looking to make their way over to Yercaud. There is no direct train that connects to Yercaud due to its lack of a railway station, but Salem Junction is the nearest railway station to Yercaud which is only 35 km away from here. Additionally, Salem Junction is part of a vast network of trains, a lot of which run on a daily basis, connecting Yercaud to cities all over the country. Trains going to or coming from Mumbai, Coimbatore, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Mangalore, Mysore and so many other cities have a stop at Salem Junction on their route, giving you plenty of options in terms of how to reach Yercaud.

Quite a few of the major cities of Tamil Nadu and its neighbouring states are connected to Yercaud via a robust system of road. Salem once again is the closest town to Yercaud, standing at around 36 km and more likely than not, you may have to pass through it when making your way to Yercaud from further away. Coimbatore is approximately 195 km away, Chennai is approximately 355 km away and Bangalore is about 220 km away, while places like Trichy, Madurai and Mettur are within 80 to 280 km from it. All in all, Yercaud boasts a decent level of road connectivity, with a number of buses and taxis available to take you to it. Should you choose to make the trip over yourself, with your own two or four-wheeler, the scenery that will accompany you on this winding route is quite a treat.
