- Khujand Day Tour
Khujand Day Tour (from Tashkent)
Khujand proves that Tajikistan’s allure is not just limited to mountains and lakes. Situated in the country’s northern panhandle near the jigsaw border with Uzbekistan, Khujand is dwarfed only by Dushanbe in population and is cloaked in an old-world charm exuding from its Silk Road ruins, surrounding mountain terrain and delightfully chaotic bazaar that epitomizes the classic Central Asia shopping experience. The Khujand Day Tour is an optimal way to experience border-town, historical Tajikistan during your Uzbekistan travels. From the launching point of Tashkent, you’ll be escorted to the Tajikistan border and met upon crossing for a guided tour of Khujand, a city dotted with relics of bygone eras and home to the country’s most colorful, memorable bazaar. This full-day tour includes transportation, lunch in Khujand and a private guide for your entire time in Tajikistan.
Tour Itinerary:
Tashkent – Khujand – Tashkent
After breakfast, your driver will meet you at the Tashkent hotel to drive to the Uzbekistan-Tajikistan ‘Oybek’ border crossing (100km, 1hr 30min). Clear customs and passport control on both sides and meet your Tajik guide and driver. Drive to Khujand (70km, 1hr) and start your city tour:
- Explore Khujand Fortress : First built in the 5th century BC, rebuilt in the Middle Ages and again reconstructed in recent times, the Khujand Fortress was one of the most impenetrable castles in Central Asia.
- Continue to Historical Museum of Sughd : Housed in the Khujand Fortress, this museum brings the region’s history to life with moving depictions of Alexander the Great’s conquests and unusual artefacts preserved from the territory of historical Sughd.
- Excursion to the Mausoleum of Sheikh Muslihiddin Khujandi (dates vary): This impressive two-story mausoleum commemorating Sheikh Muslihiddin, a 12th century ruler and poet, is situated in a memorial complex that includes a mosque, a towering 20-meter minaret and an assortment of lesser mausoleums.
- Shop at Panjshanbe Bazaar (Thursday Bazaar): Walk about this bright and colorful oriental market, rumored to be the best in Tajikistan, where you can sample fresh fruits and mingle with shoppers from Khujand and the surrounding villages.
- Stroll through Somoni Park : A welcoming stretch of land and popular gathering place for local residents, Somoni Park displays a prominent statue of Ismoil Somoni plus fountains and bright mosaics that depict the city’s history.
During the city tour you will have lunch at a local restaurant. Drive back to the border in late afternoon, pass through customs and enter Uzbekistan. Arrive in Tashkent for drop-off at the hotel. End of Khujand Day Tour.
