Amateur Traveler

Travel to Berlin – Episode 684

What to do in Berlin Germany (Podcast)

Hear about travel to Berlin as the Amateur Traveler talks to Dan Noll and Audrey Scott from uncorneredmarket.com about the city they now call home.

Dan and Audrey said, “It certainly seems to be enjoying another upsurge in popularity. Correct me if I am wrong but I think it is the 3rd most popular destination in Europe. Berlin on the surface is not a traditional European destination, meaning it does not have a preserved old town like Prague or even like Munich. But what it has, it has this dynamism and feel to it and creativity and energy. So people don’t really come to Berlin to see beautiful old buildings. There are still a few that remain and there obviously is a really interesting history here but it’s more for its creative feel for its neighborhoods. It also has a really big party scene for those who like clubbing. It’s more about the feel of the place. Berlin is in an almost constant state of renaissance.”

We start in the center of the city in the Mitte neighborhood in some of the typical visitor spots like the Reichstag, the Brandenberg Gate, the monument to the Murdered Jews of Europe, and Museum Island. But Dan and Audrey also enjoy some of the more up-and-coming neighborhoods like Neukölln (where they live) and Kreuzberg.

The city is surprisingly large. The city is 344 square miles in landmass. So you are not going to see everything in a week-long visit.

Some of the places that they would recommend to focus on that are the “usual suspects” would include the Checkpoint Charlie museum. The other Berlin Wall site to visit is the East Side Gallery which is a 2-mile long section along the Spree River in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg neighborhood that has been turned into an art exhibit.

They highly recommend a visit to the Reichstag but you will need to get a ticket well in advance. The area around the Reichstag is an open park.

Berlin is easy to get around by public transport.

We talk about a number of tours including free walking tours near the Brandenberg Gate, but also some more unusual tours like the Alternative Berlin Tour which focuses on street art and alternative culture. Berlin is a great tour to explore on bikes with some great bike lanes. You can take a bike tour of the much delayed new airport or the old Tegel airport that was famous for the Berlin Airlift. Dan and Audrey also recommend the Underground Berlin tour of some underground bunkers. You can even take canoe tours. Berlin has more bridges than Venice.

For a day trip, they recommend a trip out to Potsdam to see the old Prussian palaces and gardens.

We talk about places to shop like a Turkish market and some great restaurants where you can get traditional German food, vegan food, or a döner kebab. We also talk about some of the best of the 60 Christmas markets in the city.

Travel to the Canary Islands – Episode 680

I really enjoyed hearing about the Canaries again. We visited a few months ago on a cruise and jammed as much as possible into a day on each island. I echo the sentiment that the Canaries resemble nowhere else on the planet, with the possible exception of Hawaii. I have to say I really enjoyed all the variety of landscapes and flora in such a small space. I wanted to note a couple of items that didn’t make the podcast, such as all of the Cesar Manrique-designed locations around the islands (including quite a few on Lanzarote), Mirador del Rio on Lanzarote, Maspalomas sand dunes on Gran Canaria, Cueva del Viento (giant lava tube) on Tenerife, and the Puerto de la Cruz botanic garden (items from around the world from Explorer times, now several hundred years old). If interested, we kept a trip log of such items that show pictures and video of these and may help people planning a trip to the Canaries:  http://justinandcrystal.com/SpainMorocco/index.htm

Germany travel

Germany travel pin

In recent years, tourism to Germany has boomed, and for good reason! The Vaterland’s kaleidoscope of natural beauty, urban traditionalism merged with modernity, and its historical importance, make Germany an excellent choice for a short — or long — European break.

Germany lies at the geographic epicenter of Europe, and is bordered by nine countries and two seas. It is home to the largest population in Europe, which is dispersed around a variety of natural splendours: the magnificent mountain ranges of the Alps; the Black Forest, filled with its dense foliage and folklore; the majestic winding rivers of the Rhine and Danube; and the picturesque coast of the Baltic Sea.

Germany has contributed significantly to Europe’s pool of great leaders (Frederick the Great), writers (Goethe), philosophers (Kant), composers (Beethoven), scientists (Einstein), and revolutionaries (Martin Luther and Karl Marx), making it a cultural epicenter as well as a geographical one.

With its central location, breathtaking landscapes, abundant supply of well-preserved and thoughtfully-curated historical and cultural landmarks, and cities at the forefront of modernity, it is easy to see why travelers should look to Germany when choosing their next European holiday destination.

Germany’s capital, Berlin, has been a world-renowned metropolis, compared with the likes of New York City, Paris and London, since its golden age of the roaring twenties. However, no other city in the world can compete with Berlin’s unique past. It is this tumultuous narrative that sets Berlin apart and provides the city with its unrivaled personality: a patchwork of history, architecture, arts, nature and nightlife.

In contrast to the wealthier German cities of Munich and Hamburg, Berlin is relatively poor. As a result it offers very reasonable prices for a European capital, although this is quickly changing with Berlin’s recent rise in popularity with travellers.

Berlin’s public transport system was once the most technologically advanced in the world. While today this does not hold true, the BVG is still a good network, pragmatically connecting the bustling metropolis, its numerous surrounding lakes, and the historic Prussian town of Potsdam.

Getting to and from Germany

There are over one hundred international airlines offering flights to and from Germany, with the major airports located in Frankfurt am Main, Munich and Berlin.

The capital is currently served by two historic, yet decaying airports: Tegel (TXL) and Schönefeld (SXF). A new airport, Berlin Brandenburg Airport, is under construction, but has been plagued with problems that have pushed back the opening date and led people to wonder if it will ever open its doors. If it does, it will replace Tegel and Schönefeld and provide Berlin with one ultra-modern airport complete with high-speed connections into the city center.

There are direct routes into Germany from around the world, though it might be cheaper to fly into another European country and use a low-cost carrier to get you to your final destination. You could also consider taking the ferry into Germany from the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden and Denmark; there are many ferry connections along the Baltic Sea into the German harbor towns of Kiel and Rostock. There are also ferry connections from the UK but a budget flight tends to be cheaper and faster.

Traveling into Germany by train with a rail pass probably offers the best combination of speed, sightseeing and flexibility. Train pass packages can be purchased online from Eurail and Rail Europe . Check out our tips on how to use a Eurail/ Eurorail pass .

'Conan O'Brien Must Go' is side-splitting evidence of life beyond late night TV

Eric Deggans

Conan O'Brien dresses as a Viking in Norway. Conaco/Max hide caption

Conan O'Brien dresses as a Viking in Norway.

To be honest, when I first heard Conan O'Brien was ending his TV talk show in 2021, I assumed news that he might turn to variety shows and online programs to continue his career was some combination of face-saving and wishful thinking.

But after watching the four episodes of his new Max series Conan O'Brien Must Go , it's now obvious — even to a thickheaded critic like me — that leaving late night TV really was liberating for O'Brien. He's leveraged his unique sensibility into several different podcasts, a deal with Sirius XM , specials featuring other stand-up comics and now this travel series for Max — which resembles jokey specials he did for cable channel TBS back in the day.

And as the late night TV genre crumbles under sagging viewership and the decline of traditional media, O'Brien's renaissance also provides an example for the future — where fertile comedy minds and talented performers can spread their work over a much larger canvas.

Is Conan O'Brien the best 'Hot Ones' guest ever? Discuss.

Pop Culture Happy Hour

Is conan o'brien the best 'hot ones' guest ever discuss., learning a lesson from 'hot ones'.

O'Brien already made a splash recently with his brilliantly maniacal appearance on the interview-while-eating-hot-wings show Hot Ones , slobbering over hot sauces while claiming, as he was checked over by a fake doctor, that "I'm fine! I'm perfectly f*****g fine!"

This is the place where O'Brien shines — he's called it "this strange phantom intersection between smart and stupid" — and it's on full, freakish, super silly display in every episode of Conan O'Brien Must Go .

The conceit of the show is pretty simple. O'Brien heads overseas to visit average folks in Norway, Argentina, Thailand and Ireland who had once Zoomed in to speak with him on the podcast Conan O'Brien Needs a Fan . Sometimes the visits seem like a surprise — he catches one aspiring Norwegian rapper in shorts and Crocs after popping up on his doorstep — and others seem a bit more planned, including his visit to a radio show with about four listeners in Buenos Aires.

Each episode begins with a solemn monologue which sounds like it is delivered by the film world's most eccentric voice, German filmmaker and actor Werner Herzog (he's not credited in the show and when asked, a publicist at Max shared a quote from O'Brien: "I can neither confirm nor deny the voice in question.")

The torturous accent by "Herzog" makes every line sound absurdly hilarious, describing O'Brien as "the defiler ... with dull, tiny eyes ... the eyes of a crudely painted doll ... he scavenges in distant lands, uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition and the occasional selfie."

Now that's smart. And oh so stupid.

A funhouse mirror version of a travel show

O'Brien performs onstage with a fan in Norway Conaco/Max hide caption

O'Brien performs onstage with a fan in Norway

Fans of O'Brien's Conan Without Borders specials on TBS already know what his style is when he tackles a travel show — throwing himself into outrageous reactions and situations while working his quirky brand of improvised conversations with hapless bystanders.

In the Max series Conan O'Brien Must Go , that includes O'Brien offering screechy vocals onstage during a performance of a Norwegian emo/rap band. Or asking provocative questions of a couple therapist/sex expert. Or getting beat up in a "fight" with a 10-year-old boy in a bar.

It's all an excuse for O'Brien to unleash his energetic wit, taste for silly absurdity and skill at drawing laughs from sympathetic — if often befuddled — strangers. Whether you enjoy this special will depend on how you feel about O'Brien's style, which can feel a bit like the world's best class clown doing everything possible to make you crack a smile.

(Rent a family in Norway so they can say goodbye when he gets on a SeaCraft? Check. Get local artists to paint a mural of O'Brien, a soccer star and The Pope on the side of a building in Argentina? Double check.)

'Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend' Is A Joke Name For A Podcast — Sort Of

'Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend' Is A Joke Name For A Podcast — Sort Of

But what amazes in a larger sense is how O'Brien has turned his sensibility into a comedy brand to fuel work on many different platforms. And, at age 60, with more than 30 years as a comedy star, he's been released from the shackles of any genre to shine wherever he chooses — whether it's an episode of Hot Ones or a streaming service which sometimes looks like a collision between True Detective and 90 Day Fiancé .

Leaving late night TV as late night left him

I'm old enough that I started covering TV not long after O'Brien made his first move from the shadows of life as a comedy writer – he worked on Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons — to succeed David Letterman in 1993 as host of NBC's show Late Night (now hosted by Seth Meyers). Back then, NBC gave O'Brien years to figure out the show, honing his smartly serious comedy in a way that would inspire then-teenage fans like Seth Rogen and Bill Hader .

O'Brien left NBC after a disastrous deal where the network tried to make him host of its venerated late night program The Tonight Show and also keep its former host Jay Leno at the network. He moved to a late night show on TBS in 2010, but even then, there was a sense that his creativity was a bit hemmed in by the format.

After 28 Quirky Years, Conan O'Brien Is Leaving Late Night

After 28 Quirky Years, Conan O'Brien Is Leaving Late Night

By the time he left his TBS show Conan for good, it seemed O'Brien was already caught in a trend which would hobble other late night shows — as young viewers consumed his content online and ratings on cable dropped.

Now, with a podcast and digital media company worth many millions and growing status as a TV comedy legend still willing to do almost anything for a laugh, O'Brien is proving there is a successful life beyond late night.

Particularly, if you have the talent to play the fool while leaving little doubt you're also the smartest person in the room.

Instant Impact Players Detroit Lions Could Target in 2024 Draft

Detroit Lions have the potential to add impactful players in the draft.

  • Author: John Maakaron

In this story:

The Detroit Lions have the ability to target a variety of different players in this year's draft.

Despite having a solid roster , young prospects that could be targeted in the first round have the potential to start sooner rather than later.

In later rounds, general manager Brad Holmes and Co. have the potential to add impact players at wide receiver, safety and cornerback.

“It feels like every year we’ve been doing this together, we have the plan, ‘Oh, this is what we think the Lions are gonna do.’ And then they go throw a curveball and do something, the exact opposite," said Christian Booher . "I’m just staying on my toes, man, and being ready. As soon as that thing kicks off at 8 p.m. you never know what could happen. I’m excited to see where the Lions go with this. It could be anybody. It could be any position. They’ve put themselves in a really good spot with the roster in terms of depth and having starting-caliber players at every position. So, now, it’s just playing the wait-and-see game.”

One of the players targeted in our latest mock All Lions mock draft is wideout Luke McCaffrey. A converted quarterback, McCaffrey comes from a lineage of NFL players and has enticing potential.

“Luke McCaffrey’s just an exciting athlete, man, and it’s fun to think about him as a potential gadget player in Ben Johnson’s offense right away," Booher said. "Could help out, maybe, on kick return, punt return. Obviously, with the new kick return rules, that position is gonna be at a premium. To be able to use a guy like Luke McCaffrey, who’s not gonna get a ton of touches on offense to help you out on special teams in that aspect would be a lot of fun.

McCaffrey had over 1,000 receiving yards over two seasons at the position at Rice. With the Lions' receivers coach having taken a similar trajectory during his time as a player, the pairing for McCaffrey and the Lions could be fruitful.

“You’ve got a former player in (wide receivers coach) Antwaan Randle El who’s been there, done that. Won a Super Bowl," Booher explained. "I just feel like that would be an excellent partnership because Antwaan Randle El (was) also a quarterback in high school, also played some quarterback in college as well before moving to receiver with the Steelers. Just kind of a fun partnership there and then obviously with the background and the bloodline as well as the potential and the ceiling with Luke McCaffrey. I think it would be a lot of fun.”
