CBBC Tour at Media City @ Salford Quays

Booked a CBBC Tour for our sons 10th birthday via their website which was easy to use. It was brilliant. Well organised from the start, informative friendly guides (who can deal with 'excitable' children) and very interactive for the kids. You get to sit at the CBBC desk, go on the Blue Peter set, go into a soundroom and children go to present the weather & Newsround. Also got to keep the lanyard and pass we were given to move round the buildings. We paid £8.50 for adults and £5.75 for children and it was very much worth the money. BBC website says tour aimed at 6-11 year olds which I think is spot on. After we had a look in The Lowry and the shops opposite the Lowry before eating at one of the restaurants situated at Salford Quays.

Unusually we were lucky and got allocated tickets for A Question of Sport (been to BBC Audiences before in London they are very good, interesting and free and so were delighted to get "tickets" for this very popular show). Salford Quays is now lovely, decided to make a day out of it, see where many BBC programmes will be relocted, have pub lunch, look around. (We've a longish journey so makes sense to make a day of it). BBC do state that even though tickets have been allocated, it's still on a "first come-first served basis" - which is fair enough, they need to be sure of a full audience (so we went very early) to find that already a full audience there! Couldn't get in, although they do promise ticket allocation for next series - fine if you live say within an hour of Manchester and want to queue for several hours. SO, just to help anybody else, if your "ticket" says 'doors open 4 pm' - turns out the audience had been queueing since 12.30 (also doors were open long before 4 pm) - in fact people were already queueing for evening show by 3 pm in afternoon. WE DID KNOW THEY OVERSUBSCRIBE TO ENSURE FULL AUDIENCE, WE DIDN'T KNOW THAT IT'S BY 30%! Of course this is really much more than 30% because although, as promised we have been allocated "tickets" for the next series, we won't bother because we might not get in again. We weren't "in the know" but just to help anyone like us, go if you dont mind queueing for about 4 hours before stated time open, go earlier still to give yourself time to look around Salford Quays, especially on a sunny day, it's a nice trip out and the BBC staff, shows, are very entertaining.
