I heard people rave about their Cadac camping stoves. They seem to have a big range, so anyone can find something suitable for their needs. I reached out to the company to see if they were open to collaborating with me. They kindly sent me their Cadac Safari Chef 2 to review.

This is a sponsored post, but all opinion is my own.

Why choose Cadac?

Cadac has won several international awards over the years for its product quality and innovation. Whether you are a couple or a big family, Cadac has something for you. They offer a wide range of outdoor cooking and heating products.

Our experience with the Cadac Safari Chef 2

Up until now, we were quite lazy with our camping meals. We would just boil some water and eat an expedition meal from a packet. Very quick and lightweight option without having to do any washing up. Great for wild camping or if you rely on public transport.

However, we now have a car and have the space for some more luxurious items. We decided to go car camping on my birthday to the Peak District and Live The Braai Life. I must say, I was very proud of the dishes we cooked on the barbecue during these 4 days. We kept all the meat in a camping fridge and had some really nice meals. It was nice to slow down from our usual hectic itinerary to cook some nice meals, enjoy the surrounding views and spend some quality time together.

Cadac Safari Chef 2 camping stove

The camping stove is super easy to use. It’s quick to set up and pack away. The Safari Chef 2 has folding legs that allow you to stand it on the floor or on a table. It also comes with a carrier bag, which makes it easy to tuck into your car!

Cadac Safari Chef 2 camping stove

The best thing about this stove is that it can multipurpose. The unit comes with a ceramic BBQ Grill Plate and Flat Plate. It also has an enamelled Dome Lid which doubles as a pot for cooking and a removable pot stand for use with your own kettle and pans So you can boil a kettle on it, fry or bbq food. It also works as a pizza oven with the pizza stone accessory. The camping stove runs from disposable gas cartridges that screw directly to the unit, meaning no need for regulators and bulky cylinders.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

I had no issue cleaning the plates, even after the fatty meat. I just used warm soapy water. But some parts are also dishwasher safe.

What we cooked:

Sausages with asparagus and potatoes English breakfast (bacon, eggs and baked beans) Kofta kebabs and corn on the hob Pizza and garlic bread

Who is the Cadac Safari Chef 2 for?

  • Good size cooking surface for two people, but it is probably too small for a family
  • People who do car camping, or I can imagine taking it on a canoe trip as well. But probably not suitable for backpacking trips, as you want to keep weight and size down.

All in all we are very happy with our new camping stove. We will take it on all our car camping trips and we can’t wait to try out new recipes with it.

Cadac Safari Chef Recipes

Camp Cooking, Picnics And More With The Cadac Safari Chef 2

Cadac Safari Chef Recipes

There are two Cadac Safari Chef 2’s. One is LP – low pressure- and one is HP – high pressure. The LP version requires a regulator and hose, but can then be attached to a number of different gas bottle options, from the large refillable ones – which works out the best, cost wise – to the smaller single use ones. I tend to keep a small one in the bag, and a backup one in my camping kit, because an extra heavy item to lug around isn’t much fun. One canister normally lasts me about 5 or 6 meals, depending on what you’re making, adding about £1 to the price of the meal. A price I’m happy to pay to not have to find room in the car for a large canister. That said, if I knew we were in one spot for a week or two, I’d probably opt for the large one.

Cadac Safari Chef Recipes

With the HP you only have the option of the screw in canisters which screw directly into the bbq.

I opted for the LP, and to save some money ended up buying a separate hose to go with my existing regulator, but when it arrived I realised my regulator had different markings than those that are supplied with the Safari Chef 2, and the local camping shops couldn’t tell me if it would be okay to use, so I ended up going back to the online shop and just buying the set as is! If you’re not very clued up on these things, I’d suggest the same – I have three regulators now and they all differ in shape and fitting and it’s important to make sure you have the right thing since you’re working with gas and fire.

Why the Safari Chef 2?

Cadac Safari Chef Recipes

What does the Safari Chef 2 come with?

Cadac Safari Chef Recipes

You can also use the flat griddle instead of the BBQ grate – this is perfect for things like eggs, pancakes, and fajitas.

The lid can be placed on to conserve the heat, but the lid is itself a cooking surface – turn it around and you have a fantastic deep pan in which you can cook… anything you like! We used it this week for a vegetable medley and I thought adding some chicken to it would have made a super easy one pot meal, which would leave you with just one dish to clean.

In addition to these you can also buy a separate paella pan and a pizza stone! I expect you could fit the pizza stone in the Safari Chef 2 bag as there is a bit of room in it, though I’d have to try the paella pan (don’t own this one yet!) and let you know if that fits too.

Favourite things about the Safari Chef 2?

Cadac Safari Chef Recipes

  • It’s lightweight and self contained. It fits in behind the passenger seat under my daughters feet without being a burden on space in a tiny car.
  • It is super easy to put together and get dinner going. We’ve used it on the beach, a picnic in the park and camping. While not advised, I’d imagine, we also used it in the tent a few times as there were gale force winds outside and cooking – in fact standing up straight – was near impossible.  There’s no mess, no flames jumping around and no sparks flying.
  • I love that we can eat as we would at home. Healthy meals with practically no huge effort and no extra dishes.
  • I LOVE that it’s reduced the number of cooking pots and bits that I have to carry around in the camping kit. We take a bowl for mixing/stirring/combining (thought at a push we could use the lid) and the rest is all done on the Safari Chef 2.

Anything I’d change about the Safari Chef 2?

Cadac Safari Chef Recipes

A way of lifting a hot griddle or grill would be really useful – I use the bbq tongs and just flick it off when I need to switch between plates (i.e. when you’ve friend the onions and now want to grill the patties) but it’s not the end of the world. Where the tongs flick isn’t appropriate, you  can just BBQ the patties on the griddle. Not the end of the world. A clip on handle would be useful though. Or I suppose you could buy decent fire gloves.

And just in the interest of transparency, I do also still use my pocket gas stove as no one should ever have to wait for dinner to finish before being able to boil the kettle!

What can you cook on the Safari Chef 2?

So far, excluding regular BBQ food, we’ve done:

  • Fruit Skewers with healthy chocolate sauce
  • Sausages and sweet corn (for hotdogs)
  • Scrambled egg and bacon
  • Cheese filled herb tortilla wraps
  • Hamburgers (with fried onion)
  • Flapjacks/Crumpets/Pancakes (depends on what you call them!)

Buy the Safari Chef 2:

Available from Amazon UK  but I ended up buying mine from Winfields Outdoors as they had a sale on. For my Australian friends, I can’t find the Safari Chef 2 there yet, but they do still sell the Safari Chef and other Cadac products

Top camping meals on a Cadac Safari Chef 2

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

For those people that are unaware, the Cadac is a versatile and flexible outdoor cooking system that connects to our external LPG BBQ point on our VW campervan. It would be far too easy to describe the Cadac as a gas BBQ, it is so much more than that. You can of course BBQ on the Cadac, but you can also use it as a hot plate, a normal outdoor gas hob and a pizza oven as well.

What you get in the box

We are on our second Cadac in just over 4 years of heavy use, so we have amassed a range of cooking accessory options. The basic system consists of the base burner station which connects to the LPG supply via a quick connect flexible hose. On top of that fits the windbreak section. Once this basic setup is in place, you have a range of options depending on how you want to cook. We have a standard griddle, a solid hot plate and a rather useful 50/50 griddle and hotplate option which is really useful at breakfast time for grilling meat and cooking eggs at the same time. There is also a BBQ lid for low and slow cooking Webber style- this also doubles as a large pan for flexible usage. In addition to this basic set-up, we also purchase a pizza stone which we have come to love and are using more and more often.

We always cook with the base unit on the floor as we like to sit around it as we cook, but you can pop it on top of a table for a more domestic cooking setup.

Our favourite Cadac creations

Philly cheese steak sandwiches

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

Set up the Cadac with the hotplate configuration and preheat. Finely slice an onion and green pepper into thin strips. Add a little olive oil to the hotplate and fry off the onion and pepper mix. Thinly slice a beef steak- it does not need to be an expensive cut, as cheap cuts are often best as long as you slice it finely. Season the meat heavily with salt and pepper or your favourite BBQ mix. Once the onion and pepper mix is fried off, move to one side on the hotplate. Add a touch more oil to the hotplate and fry off the beef strips, turning regularly. Once the beef is cooked, mix the onions and peppers into the beef and continue to turn regularly. Add your chosen bread to warm over the top of the steak mix- we like to use flatbreads for a burrito style sandwich. Take the bread off the heat when warmed and add the cheese to the bread- the cheaper the cheese slices the better for that authentic flavour! Add the steak mix on top of the cheese and complete your sandwich.

Pizza on the Cadac

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

This could not be easier. Unfortunately the pizza stone did not come with any instructions for use, and it would be quite easy to damage it if you used it incorrectly. If you add direct heat to the stone via the burner there is a risk of it fracturing. We add the pizza stone to the hotplate as the hotplate has a built in heat diffuser which protects the stone and makes for a more even cooking surface. Heat up the stone on a high heat for a good 10 minutes, with the Cadac lid on. When the stone is heated, simply add your pizza to the stone and recover. Set a timer for 8 minutes and wait- do not be tempted to peek as that will lose heat from the cooking process. We use simple supermarket pizzas rather than preparing our own- it makes a quick, easy and cheap meal. After 8 minutes the pizza should be cooked perfectly with a crisp base and gooey, melted topping. Be warned, the Cadac will not brown the topping like a domestic oven at home, as the lid naturally lets some of the cooking heat disappear, but the end product is absolutely delicious.

Paella/jambalaya

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

Purists will argue that what I describe below is not a true paella/jambalaya…and I would agree- but it is a hearty outdoor dish that can be easily adapted to your own tastes and requirements.

Set up the Cadac as an outdoor hob, with the windbreak and pan stand in position. Warm a pan and add a glug of olive oil. Add some finely chopped chorizo to the pan and gently fry to release its lovely paprika rich oil. Add small chunks of chicken breast to brown in the rich, flavoursome oil. Once the chicken is browned, add a chopped pepper and more sliced of chorizo and continue to fry. After about 5 minutes, add a handful of paella rice to the pan and stir until the rice grains are coated in the cooking oil. Add enough chicken stock to cover the contents of the pan and bring to a vigorous boil. Once everything is bubbling away, turn down the heat to as low as possible and cook slowly until all the stock has been adsorbed by the rice. This will take about 20 mins. If the mix dries out and the rice is not fully cooked, add more stock as required. Once the rice is cooked, we love to let it crisp on the bottom of the pan (without burning!), just enough to give it a tasty extra texture.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

Spanish Omelet/tortilla

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

We love this dish at home- it is so versatile as a main meal with salad or as a tasty picnic accompaniment that travels well. Set up the Cadac as an outdoor hob, with the windbreak and pan stand in position. You will need to use a good non-stick frying pan for this dish as it does tend to stick on anything less than fully non-stick!

Add the pan to the heat and add a good glug of olive oil and a pack of smoked pancetta lardons to the pan. Allow the lardons time to release their lovely bacon fat into the pan whilst you finely slice an onion. Once the lardons are browned, turn down the heat and add the onions. Try not to brown the onions too much, slowly cooking them until they are soft and translucent. Slice your pre-cooked new potatoes into slices that are about a pound coin thickness. Once the onions are soft, add the potatoes to the pan and continue to stir the potato, onion, bacon mix. Beat 4 to 6 eggs in a bowl- this depends on how big your pan is- you need enough beaten egg to cover the potato mix. Add the beaten egg to the pan an stir continuously. You will see the egg scramble as it hits the bottom of the pan. By stirring you will feel like you are just making a mess, but the magic has yet to come! When about half the egg mixture has solidified, gently pat down the mixture into the pan, turn down the heat as low as possible and continue to cook without stirring. The omelet will start to cook from the base upwards, with the top remaining rather uncooked. After about 5 mins, place a plate over the top of the pan and flip out the partly cooked omelet onto the plate. Return the omelet back into the pan (wet side down) to cook for a further 5 mins. The top will now be the cooked side as the underside continues to cook. Once cooked fully through, slide the finished omelet onto a plate to slice and serve.

Lamb kebabs with roasted vegetable couscous and tzatziki.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

We just wanted to illustrate to you in this section how versatile the Cadac is when looking to cook a simple BBQ. We based this meal around lamb kebabs that you can find in most supermarkets. Of course you can create them yourselves using lamb mince, spices, pine nuts and herbs, but when you are rushed for time, and short on budget, it is often easier to let the supermarkets do the hard work. One common side dish that we love to make is a char-grilled vegetable moroccan couscous. This sounds fancier than it is, but it is a great and easy accompaniment to any grilled meat.

Take any veg of your choice from corn, peppers, courgette, asparagus, chillis and onions and cut them into sections that con be char-grilled on the Cadac. Pre-heat the BBQ to hot and then add the veg. Allow the veg to char before turning, but make sure that it doesn’t burn through. Once the veg is thoroughly charred, take it off the heat, and whilst the meat is grilling, roughly chop the veg. Add the veg to a ready prepared moroccan couscous mic that is available from most supermarkets. These ready prepped packs are cheap and only need water adding for a few minutes to come to life. By adding the freshly grilled veg it just adds to the flavour and makes you look like a culinary genius. Once the meat is cooked, serve on a bed of the couscous with a drizzle of tzatziki.

1. Process of lamp light replacement should be managed more effectively. 2. It is too noisy in the inner rooms - noise from events (bad sound isolation) 3. All other aspects are on the good level.

Reviving classic Russian cuisine

Oct 19 2018.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

Roads & Kingdoms talks to Russian chef Vladimir Mukhin of Moscow’s super-restaurant, White Rabbit.

Still in his mid-30’s, Vladimir Mukhin is already one of Russia’s best known chefs and the leading culinary light of the White Rabbit Group, which has 16 restaurants around the country. The most well-known of these, Moscow’s  White Rabbit , was named one of the 50 best restaurants in the world last year. Roads & Kingdoms’ Nathan Thornburgh talked to Mukhin in Moscow about being a fifth-generation chef, reviving classic Russian cuisine, and finding good product in the age of embargoes.

Nathan Thornburgh: Tell me about White Rabbit, what is the food? What are you trying to accomplish there?

Vladimir Mukhin: The White Rabbit is a big restaurant. We’re trying to revive Russian cuisine. I’m a fifth-generation chef, so I’m passionate about the food we create. During the Soviet Union period, we killed Russian food. Classic Russian recipes became too simplified. For example, usually you drink tea, but if you want to be, just to be creative, want to make the tea with milk, you can’t. It would be like stealing milk from the government. People went to jail.

When I was growing up, I remember my grandfather coming to the kitchen and crying because he couldn’t experiment with his food.

Thornburgh: Wow. I remember this famous photo session with Che Guevara which came up with some of his best pictures, maybe two incredible iconic portraits came from an entire roll of film, and the photographer went to him and showed him this roll of film and Che said, What the hell are you doing? You wasted all of these images. You took 30 pictures to get one? That’s the government’s film. It’s a similar mentality.   So you’re telling the story of a kind of cuisine that was lost on the Soviet history and now you’re playing with this idea of finding it again. What does your process look like? Do you get as many grandmothers as you can round up and just kind of shake recipes out of them? How were you doing this?

Mukhin: I just try to work with as many local farmers and producers as I can, so we can use as many Russian ingredients as we can.

Thornburgh: So this is a close relationship.

Mukhin: Yes. I traveled throughout Russia—not just the big cities, but also the villages to talk with older people.

Thornburgh: You know I think people don’t understand the vastness of Russia, and how big it’s collection of cultures and languages and cuisines is. What parts of the country influences your food?

Mukhin: I’m inspired by the whole country. It’s a big territory, and sometimes it feels like it’s too big. I try and use different techniques and ingredients from all over the country, which I think makes my menus distinct.

We have an a la carte menu with about 50 dishes of classical Russian food. Everything looks modern because I’m a young chef. But if you close your eyes and try these dishes, you’ll taste 100% classic Russian flavors.

I want to highlight all aspects of Russian cuisine. Before the Olympic Games in Sochi, we opened a restaurant there, not just to make money, but to expose people visiting for the Olympics to Russian food. That’s why we opened The Red Fox restaurant. It’s all about Russian ingredients.

Thornburgh: Sochi, at least when I’ve been there, is like a Miami Beach. It’s like a place to get pizza and sushi, and go to the nightclubs.

Mukhin: You been?

Thornburgh: Yeah.

Mukhin: It’s crazy.

Thornburgh: It’s a little crazy, but it’s interesting to bring in Red Fox and sort of say okay, because people are coming out, let’s bring Russia to Sochi.

Mukhin: It was incredible. We had thousands of visitors at the restaurant.

Thornburgh: So you really looked internally for inspiration. Did working outside of Russia motivate you to focus on Russian cuisine?

Mukhin: Yes. I spent time working in Avignon, France. I worked with Christian Etienne, and he would make a special Russian meal once a year.  It was crazy.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

Thornburgh: How was the food?

Mukhin: It was shit. I told him that I would cook real Russian food for him, and I did. I cooked borscht, blinis, and other classics. He liked it and said that once a year we should use my recipes, but with his influence. I agreed, and we went on to make amazing food. Eventually, I wanted to come back to my motherland. So I left and I started working on making White Rabbit a reality.

Thornburgh: When people go to White Rabbit, what are they going to find?

Mukhin: Someone once told me that there is a new Russian cuisine and an old Russian cuisine. I think Russian cuisine is going through an evolution. So I hope people will come and see evolution at White Rabbit.

Thornburgh: Great. Always good to end on an invite. Thank you.

Mukhin: Thank you so much.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

cadac safari chef 2 in tasche packen

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

We sell items such as seconds stock, ex display and demo kits, or returns when a customer simply changes their mind about the product. All Cadac Recycled products function as intended and are tested and checked by our team before they are sold. Some components to the unit may bear small cosmetic scuffs or surface scratches due to the nature of being returns and/or seconds stock.

We want to reduce the amount of packaging we dispose of and use, so if we can retain the same packaging we will do. With this in mind please be advised that your item may arrive in packaging with slight imperfections, or in plain packaging where we are unable to re-use the original packaging.
