If you spend a lot of time on your iPhone or Mac computer reading articles on the web, chances are that your eyes will hurt after sitting in front of the screen for several hours. Bright light and small font lead to eye strain, headaches, and decreased focus.

How To Enable Dark Mode on Safari

Windows users have had the Dark Mode for a long time, and now it’s finally available for Safari users on iOS devices. You can get an extension for your Safari browser and read articles all night. Read on and learn how to activate Dark Mode on your iOS device.

Safari’s Native Dark Mode Function

Safari (even older versions) already has a built-in dark mode feature. This function won’t work for every website because it’s meant to help ease the strain on your eyes while reading.

Users who are running a newer version of macOS can follow these steps:

change safari to light mode

If you don’t have the option to use Dark Mode, you can use ‘Reader View’ within Safari. Here’s how you can use the Reader View to darken your screen:

change safari to light mode

If you don’t see the Reader tab, you can find it by clicking View and selecting Show Reader .

Of course, this won’t work for every web page. It will work for any blogs or articles you’re trying to read, so we have a few more options listed below.

Safari Dark Mode

Night Eye for Safari

This extension is another download available in the App Store for Safari’s lack of dark mode options.

Although this app is free to download, it will cost you $39.99 per year to use it. The free option, ‘NightEye Lite,’ will limit you to five websites. This is perfect for someone looking to activate only a handful of pages. The extension offers full image support and the ability to use the features on multiple platforms.

Download Night Eye for Safari

Visit your Mac’s App Store and download the extension.

Activate the Extension

Tap on the Night Eye extension and choose the dark mode option. If there’s a website, you’d like to view without dark mode, simply tap the extension again and choose “Normal.”

With great reviews and the 24/7 support team, this is definitely an add-on worth looking into.

Nightlight for Safari

Another great option available for Safari is the Nightlight browser extension . The extension is free and available for those using macOS 10.13 or later. This is an Excellent, lightweight addition to your browser.

With the optional timer settings, you can enjoy dark mode on Safari without ever having to toggle it on and off. The nightlight will automatically shift the color patterns when at night, then back again during the day.

Using Dark Mode in Safari on iPad and iPhone

On the iPad and iPhone, Safari comes with a built-in reader mode designed to ease the pressure on your eyes during night reading. Here is how to activate it.

change safari to light mode

Repeat the process for every website you want to read in dark mode.

Dark Mode on macOS Mojave & Catalina

Most Mac users had to wait for the macOS Mojave update to be able to activate the dark mode on their computers. Previous versions had to use shortcuts, and you had to make exceptions for every site you wanted to view in dark mode. So, if you have Mojave installed on your Mac, follow these steps to set the dark mode up.

change safari to light mode

  • Select “Dark” in the “Appearance” options, and all websites on your Safari will switch to a black background.

Dark Mode and Other Apps

You can use the Dark Mode for other apps, not just your Safari browser. If dark mode is enabled, some apps will automatically have it activated. Here is a short how-to on toggling it on and off for the most popular apps on iOS.

Maps – If you want to use a dark background for maps with the Dark Mode activated, open the app and select “View,” and then select “Use Dark Map.”

Mail – If you want to use light mode when reading your emails, open your Mail and select “Mail,” then “Preferences.” Click on the “Viewing” tab and uncheck “Use dark backgrounds for messages.”

Notes – Your Notes will open with a black background if the Dark Mode is activated. You can disable it by selecting “Preferences” and then deselecting “Use dark backgrounds for note content.”

TextEdit – You can switch to the Dark Mode when working in TextEdit by selecting “View,” then “Use Dark Background for Windows.”

Safari – With the Dark Mode turned on; all websites will show as dark when you load them. If some website doesn’t support Dark Mode, you can use Safari Reader.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to more of your questions about Apple Dark Mode.

Can I use Dark Mode with Chrome on a Mac?

Yes, but unfortunately, it isn’t an option provided natively. This means you’ll need to use a Chrome browser extension like the ones we’ve mentioned above. If you follow the steps above to activate Dark Mode on your Mac, it will have no effect on third-party apps and browsers such as Firefox or Chrome.

Can I enable Dark Mode with Mozilla Firefox on my Mac?

Fortunately, yes! Firefox makes many things simpler than other web browsers, and Dark Mode is one of them. Enabling Dark Mode on Firefox is the same on a Mac or a PC. All you need to do is click on the three horizontal lines in the upper right-hand corner of the browser. Then, click ‘Add Ons.’ From here, you’ll see a Themes option on the left; click it, then click on one of the options in the list that gives you Dark Mode.

There are several different color variations, so choose one that you like. Now, the Firefox system will show in Dark Mode, but not all of your websites will, so you may need to enable Night Eye for Mozilla or another add-on.

Ease the Strain on Your Eyes

Reading texts all night long can cause migraines, sore eyes, and unpleasant muscle strain; switching to Dark Mode is a great option. Your eyes will be grateful, and you will be able to focus for longer periods. Who doesn’t want to increase productivity while keeping themselves healthy?

  • Turn on dark mode for your Mac in System Preferences in the General section.
  • For an iPhone or iPad, enable dark mode in the Settings app by going to the Display & Brightness section.

In recent years, developers have been making it easier to enable dark mode for all your most common apps. That's good, because many people prefer dark mode because the palette is often easier on the eyes — especially at night — and it can even help extend your device's battery life by not illuminating the screen as brightly. Here's how you can turn on dark mode for the Safari browser on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad.

Safari automatically uses dark mode if you enable it in your Mac's System Preferences.

1. Click the Apple menu and then choose System Preferences

2. Click General .

3. In the Appearance section, click Dark or Auto .

If you choose Dark , Safari and all other compatible apps will switch to a dark color palette right away and stay that way until you change this setting. Auto , on the other hand, sets the palette to dark at night and switches it to light during the day.

Just like on the Mac, Safari on your iOS device uses dark mode if you enable the feature in your iPhone or iPad's settings.

1. Start the Settings app.

2. Tap Display & Brightness .

3. In the Appearance section, tap Dark .

What to Know

  • Turning on dark mode in system preferences will enable the mode for compatible websites.
  • If a website has a  Reader  button on the left side of the search field, click it to go dark.
  • Use a Safari extension to enable dark mode on all websites. We recommend Night Eye and Dark Reader

This article covers three options to enable and disable Safari's Dark Mode on your Mac: via system preferences, by using Safari Reader View and using a browser extension.

How to Turn on Safari's Dark Mode via MacOS

At night, black text on white backgrounds is particularly tough on your eyes. It's very simple to switch on Dark Mode for your Mac. It doesn't just turn on Dark Mode for Safari, it does so for all your apps but that's perfect for protecting your eyes late at night or in dim lighting conditions.

Dark Mode is only available in macOS Mojave or later.

Click the Apple icon on the top left of your screen.

Click System Preferences.

Click General .

Click Dark .

If you want the dark appearance to only appear at night, you can click Auto for it to automatically adjust as the day progresses.

All websites that have been designed to support Dark Mode will now show in a darker form than before.

How to Switch off Safari Dark Mode

Switched on Dark Mode and realized you don't like it? It's simple to switch it back off.

As above, click the Apple icon on the top left of your screen and then choose System Preferences > General .

Click Light .

MacOS and Safari will now return to the light background permanently until you choose to switch it over again.

How to Use Safari Reader View to Turn on Dark Mode

Depending on the website you're viewing, the only thing that may go dark with MacOS's Dark Mode is the buttons and menus around the website. To ensure the site goes fully dark to protect your eyes, you need to use Safari's Reader View.

Safari Reader View only works on certain websites. Often, this is restricted to blog posts and other text-heavy websites. It's worth using when able to though.

On the website you want to view, click the Reader button on the left side of the search field.

This only appears on websites that support Safari Reader View.

Click the letter button on the right side of the search field.

Click the black background to change the background color.

You can also adjust font size and font choice here.

The background has now been changed to a dark one with white text.

Click away from the article to revert back to the original look or press the Escape key on your keyboard.

How to Use a Dark Mode Extension in Safari

The above solutions work only on a limited number of websites. If you want to enable Dark Mode for every website, you need to use a Safari extension. Many of these cost money but they can be useful. We recommend using either Night Eye which is free but limited or paying a one-off fee for Dark Reader. The process is the same for both extensions.

Install either Night Eye or Dark Reade r from the Mac App Store .

Open Safari then click Safari > Preferences .

Click the Extensions tab.

Check the box next to your newly installed extension to enable Dark Mode.

Both of these extensions should convert the vast majority of websites to Dark Mode as and when you need it.

Customize Safari on Mac with this Ultimate Guide

Danny Maiorca

For most Mac owners, Safari is the gateway to the World Wide Web. Given that it’s probably your most used application, knowing tips, tricks and new features is the best way to get the most out of it. While Safari does not have the extension libraries of Chrome, it still has a few tricks up its sleeve for Mac owners. Read on to learn how to customize Safari on your Mac.

1. Pin Tabs

Pin Tab Mac

You probably visit a couple of sites on a regular basis, and keeping them close can make it easy to refer back to them. When a tab is pinned in Safari, it stays docked as the farthest-left tab. Pinning a tab is incredibly easy: right-click on any open tab and select “Pin Tab.” Rearranging pinned tabs is as easy as dragging the tabs around one another until you have a setup you prefer.

2. Mute Tabs

Mute Tab On Mac

We have all been there as you open a new tab expecting to read new content and are instead hit with an auto-play video. In Safari, when a new tab is opened with audio playing, you’ll see a little speaker icon in the tab. Click the speaker icon, and it will automatically mute the tab.

3. Rearrange Tabs

For anyone who has more than a few tabs open at a time, organization can become an issue. To help with this, Safari enables you to get at least some semblance of order.

1. Open the “Window” menu on the Mac bar.

Window Mac Toolbar

2. Choose “Arrange Tabs By.”

Windows Arrange Tabs By

3. You can now choose between “Title” and “Website.”

Windows Options Mac

For many, choosing to sort by website will be the most useful. That way, if you have multiple tabs open, they will all be next to each other.

4. Customize Safari Toolbar

The Safari toolbar is where your most important buttons will go for daily use. That includes your Home button, Sidebar, Tab overview, and so on.

1. Right-click anywhere on the toolbar and select “Customize Toolbar.” You can then drag any item into the toolbar.

Mac Toolbar Safari

2. Once you have dragged all of the icons you want to use, click “Done.” Then, all of your changes will be saved.

Click On Done Toolbar

5. Change Your Search Engine

Safari, like most browsers, will let you choose between a few different default search engines. Google is the default search engine in Safari, but it’s not your only available option.

1. Go to “Safari -> Preferences” and open the Preferences window.

Safari Preferences

2. Click the “Search” tab.

Search Settings Safari

3. You will immediately see a drop-down that allows you to choose between Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ecosia, or DuckDuckGo.

Search Engine Options Safari

At this time, there is no way to add your own search engine. For now, Safari has chosen to add the most popular options.

6. Save Pages as PDFs

If you ever need to export a website as a PDF, Safari makes it super simple. Head to the page you want to save, then click on File and “Export as PDF.”

Mac Export Webpage As Pdf

The last remaining step is to choose where on your hard-drive you want to save the page. You can then refer to the PDF at any time, and it will automatically open in Safari, Preview or your PDF viewer of choice.

7. Handoff Continuity

As Safari is the default browser for iOS and Mac, Apple has long explored how to make it seamless between the two systems. Enter Handoff , Apple’s solution for starting an email on Mac and picking it up on iOS. This also works incredibly well with Safari.

1. Start by signing in to your iCloud account on both devices.

2. On your Mac computer, go to “System Preferences -> General,” and click on the box next to Handoff to allow it.

Mac Allow Handoff Continuity

3. On iOS or iPad OS, go to “Settings -> Handoff” and move the switch so that it’s active.

4. Once activated, you can go about your regular browsing business on your Mac. When you want to pick up wherever you left off on your Mac on your iPhone or iPad, a little icon will appear above your Safari icon. Tap on Safari and it will allow you to select whatever page you want to continue browsing.

8. Reading List

Bookmarks were yesterday’s news. Today, it’s all about Safari’s Reading List. We have all come across interesting articles that we want to read but don’t have time at the moment. Across all Apple devices, Reading List is enabled via the Sidebar icon on Safari on Mac or by using the book icon on Safari on iOS/iPadOS. You can choose the eyeglasses icon to view your entire article list. To add a new article, you have two options on Mac.

1. The first is to hit the “+” sign that appears next to the website URL. The article or site will automatically save itself to your reading list.

Mac Add Website To Reading List

2. Alternatively, you can click on the Share Sheet icon, and the first option in the drop-down is “Add to Reading List.” Select that and the article will automatically save itself to your Reading List.

If you want to read these articles offline, say while you are on a plane, go to “Safari -> Preferences -> Advanced” and click on “Save articles for offline reading automatically.”

Save Articles Offline Reading Mac

9. Safari Reader

Safari Reader strips away all of the distractions from any site where it’s available, allowing for an uninterrupted view of your chosen content. Note that it does not work on every website but definitely works on many.

1. To activate Reader, click on the four-line icon that appears next to the “+” button to the left of the URL.

Mac Reader View

2. A single press of that button will enable Reader view. Clicking on it again will take you out of reader view.

10. Set Custom Safari Icon

If you want to customize your Safari icon, doing so is surprisingly straightforward.

1. While holding down the Ctrl button, click the Safari logo and select “Options -> Show in Finder.”

Mac Show In Finder

2. When Finder loads, you’ll find yourself on the Applications page. Click the Safari logo again while holding Ctrl and choose “Get Info.”

Safari Get Info Mac

to the top-left corner of the Get Info window, you’ll see a tiny Safari icon next to “Safari.app”. Click on it to highlight it, then drag your replacement icon image to replace it.

Mac Drag Safari Icon

11. Customize Safari Theme

When you first use Safari on your Mac, you’ll see the standard white and grey interface. This is fine, but it can get a little boring for some users. Fortunately, you can customize your Safari theme in several ways.

Change to Dark Mode

For instance, you can change your browser to show dark mode.

1. Go to the Apple icon in the top left of your toolbar and choose “System Preferences … ” in the drop-down.

Mac System Preferences Corner

2. Select “General.”

Mac System Preferences 2

At the top of the next window, you’ll see the “Appearance” option. Click on “Dark.”

Mac Change Appearance

Change Safari’s Background Image

Another way you can customize Safari’s theme is by tweaking the background image on your homepage.

1. Click on the “+” button in the top right of your Safari browser to open a new page.

2. Select the icon showing three lines with sliders in the bottom-right corner.

Mac Toggle Icon

3. Make sure the box next to “Background Image” is ticked. Then, choose from one of the custom background images beneath it.

Mac Change Background Image Settings

In addition to using the background images included with Safari, you can add your own. Click the “+” icon instead of one of the other images.

Choose the picture you want to have as your background image for Safari.

Mac Background Image Change

Once you’ve picked your image, you should see the changes take place immediately.

If you want to clear your background later, you can click on the screen while holding the Ctrl button and choose “Clear Background.”

Clear Background Safari

12. Customize Safari Homepage

Once you’ve customized the theme of Safari, you can fine tune the homepage.

When you see your “Frequently Visited” section, all pages in this area will initially appear as smaller versions of the actual web pages. However, you can make them show up as icons again.

1. Click on one of the pages while holding down the Ctrl button.

2. Select “View as Icons.”

Safari View As Icons

You can also remove some of your Favorites from view. As with changing the “Frequently Visited” pages to icons, click on one of the pages and simultaneously hold the Ctrl button. Select “Delete” from the dropdown menu, and your changes will take effect.

Delete Favorite Page Mac

13. Create Custom Bookmark Folders

When customizing Safari on your Mac, you’ll want to think about productivity and not just aesthetics. One of the best ways to organize your most-visited pages is by creating custom bookmark folders to put all of them in.

1. Click on the icon in the top left that sits next to the red, yellow, and green circles.

Bookmark Icon Safari

2. On the bookmark tab, click anywhere while holding Ctrl .

3. Select New Folder and give it a name.

Name File Safari

4. Drag to add pages to this folder.

14. Customize Safari Location

Like your iPhone, your Mac can easily track where you are in the world. It uses this for several reasons, such as changing the date and time on your device.

However, websites can also track you – and some users may want them to do so. If you don’t want specific sites knowing where you are in Safari, follow these steps:

1. Click on “Safari” next to the Apple logo and choose “Preferences … ” from the drop-down.

Safari Preferences On Mac

2. Go through your currently open websites and choose whether you want to allow or deny access.

Website Permission Settings Safari

You can also block future visited websites from tracking you. Go to the bottom where it says “When visiting other websites.” If you want to revoke permission, open the drop-down and select “Deny.”

How To Enable Safari Dark Mode

Published: September 14, 2023

how-to-enable-safari-dark-mode

What is Dark Mode?

Dark Mode is a visual display setting that replaces the traditional bright white backgrounds with darker color schemes. It is a popular feature offered by many operating systems and applications, including Safari, the web browser developed by Apple.

When activated, Dark Mode transforms the interface of Safari into a darker, more subdued appearance. This means that elements such as menus, toolbars, and web page backgrounds adopt darker colors, often featuring shades of black, gray, or dark blue. Additionally, text and other content may be displayed in contrasting lighter colors, enhancing readability while reducing eye strain in low-light conditions.

Dark Mode is particularly beneficial for users who find bright screens overwhelming or who frequently use their devices in dimly lit environments. By reducing the amount of white light emitted, Dark Mode creates a more comfortable viewing experience and can help prevent eye fatigue and headaches.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal and potential health benefits, Dark Mode can also extend battery life for devices with OLED or AMOLED screens. Since these display technologies can individually turn off pixels to show true black, using Dark Mode on such devices can reduce power consumption and improve battery efficiency.

Many users also find Dark Mode visually appealing, giving a sleek and modern look to their devices. Whether you prefer the bold and dramatic appearance it provides or simply find it more pleasant to look at, Dark Mode has become a sought-after feature for many individuals across various platforms.

Now that we understand what Dark Mode is and its benefits, let’s explore how to enable it on Safari for different devices and operating systems.

How Dark Mode Benefits Users?

Dark Mode offers several benefits to users, making it a popular feature across different devices and applications. Here are some key advantages of using Dark Mode:

  • Reduced Eye Strain: Dark Mode reduces the amount of bright light emitted from screens, which can help alleviate eye strain and fatigue, especially when using devices for extended periods. The darker color scheme creates a more comfortable viewing experience, particularly in low-light or nighttime environments.
  • Improved Readability: Dark Mode enhances readability by using lighter text and contrasting colors against darker backgrounds. This combination creates better visual contrast, making it easier to read text and view content, especially for those with visual impairments.
  • Energy Savings: Dark Mode can also contribute to energy savings on devices with OLED or AMOLED screens. Since these display technologies can individually turn off pixels to show true black, using Dark Mode consumes less power and helps preserve battery life, allowing users to enjoy more extended usage without frequent recharging.
  • Enhanced Focus: The subdued and less visually distracting interface of Dark Mode can help users concentrate on their tasks by reducing unnecessary visual elements. This can be particularly beneficial for professionals who rely on their devices for work and need to minimize distractions while maintaining productivity.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Dark Mode has gained popularity due to its sleek and modern appearance. Many users appreciate the stylish and sophisticated look it lends to their devices, providing a unique and personalized touch.

By offering reduced eye strain, improved readability, energy savings, enhanced focus, and aesthetic appeal, Dark Mode provides a more comfortable and visually pleasing experience for users across various devices and platforms.

Enabling Dark Mode on macOS

Dark Mode on macOS offers a stylish and immersive experience, transforming the appearance of the entire operating system, including Safari. Here’s how to enable Dark Mode on macOS:

Step 1: Open System Preferences

Click on the Apple menu in the top-left corner of the screen and select “System Preferences” from the dropdown menu. Alternatively, you can use the Spotlight search by pressing Command + Space and typing “System Preferences.”

Step 2: Click on General

In the System Preferences window, click on the “General” icon. It is represented by a blue circle with a white letter “A” inside.

Step 3: Select Appearance

In the General preferences tab, you will see an “Appearance” section at the top. Click on the “Light” or “Dark” option to switch between the two modes. Select “Dark” to enable Dark Mode.

Step 4: Choose Dark

Once you select “Dark,” the entire macOS interface, including Safari, will transform into a darker color scheme. Safari’s menus, toolbars, and webpage backgrounds will adopt darker colors, providing a more immersive and visually appealing experience.

You can easily switch back to the default Light Mode by following the same steps and selecting the “Light” option in the Appearance section.

Enabling Dark Mode on macOS not only enhances the appearance of Safari but also creates a consistent and aesthetic environment throughout the operating system.

To enable Dark Mode on macOS and customize the appearance of Safari, follow these simple steps:

The only time that Safari 15 will show you a Dark mode is if your System Preferences > General is set to Dark mode, or you have selected the Auto choice which will change Dark and Light appearances based on the time of day in your locale. If you want it always light, then click that choice. Or, if you have installed a third-party appearance mode tool that is still running, remove it.

Safari 15 also now adds support for theme color where web designers can force Safari and tabs to any color choice. If you want to avoid that surprise, visit Safari 15 Preferences > Tabs panel, and deselect Show color in tab bar , which Apple enables by default.

How to turn on dark mode on mac.

Love using the dark mode on your Mac? Here's how you can quickly enable it from the menu bar or Control Center!

Quick Links

How to enable dark mode from control center, how to add a dark mode toggle to menu bar, how to enable dark mode from system preferences, how to schedule dark mode on mac.

Your Apple Mac or MacBook has a dark mode that can help you work better at night and in low-light. Once enabled, supported apps and websites automatically switch to a dark background with white text. Here's how to enable dark mode on Mac.

Dark mode was first introduced with macOS Mojave. You could enable or disable it from the System Preferences. Mac users who are running macOS Big Sur and newer can now enable or disable dark mode right from the Control Center.

Click the "Control Center" icon from the top-right corner of your screen.

From the Control Center drop-down window, click the "Display" module.

The Display module will now expand. Here, select the "Dark Mode" button to enable or disable the feature.

With previous versions of macOS, you needed a third-party app to access a dark mode toggle from the menu bar. Thanks to the Control Center introduced in Big Sur, you can add this toggle to the menu bar without installing anything.

Open the "Control Center" on your Mac and then drag and drop the "Display" panel to the menu bar.

The Display panel will turn into an icon and sit permanently in your Mac's menu bar. Click the "Display" button to expand the window. From here, select the "Dark Mode" button to quickly enable or disable the visual feature.

You can rearrange or remove the "Display" icon from the menu bar quite easily. Press and hold the "Command" key and then drag and drop the Display icon to where you want to move it.

If you want to remove the "Display" icon, drag the icon out to the "Desktop" and then let go.

If you're using macOS Mojave or Catalina on your Mac, you don't have access to the Control Center. Thankfully, you can enable or disable dark mode from System Preferences on any modern version of macOS.

Click the "Apple" button from the menu bar and choose the "System Preferences" option.

Here, go to the "General" section.

From the "Appearance" section, you can switch between the "Light" and "Dark" modes.

macOS can also enable or disable dark mode automatically based on the time of the day. Go to System Preferences > General, and from the "Appearance" section, choose the "Auto" option.

Once this option is enabled, macOS will automatically enable dark mode in the evening. And when you open up your Mac in the morning, macOS will be back in light mode.

If you want to enable dark mode at a specific time, you can use a third-party app called NightOwl . It's a free menu bar utility that works with macOS Mojave and higher.

The utility also serves as a quick-switch for enabling and disabling dark mode from the menu bar. Simply right-clicking the "NightOwl" icon from the menu bar enables or disables dark mode.

After NightOwl is installed and you have approved permissions, you can click the "NightOwl" button and enable the "Scheduled" feature. Then, enter the time when you want to enable the Light or Dark mode.

Want to force websites to switch to dark mode as well? Here's how you can make that happen in Safari and Chrome .

The new per-website preference in Safari would extend this option to browsing sites, and also let users correct for sites that don't display properly in either Light or Dark modes.

In addition to the per-website display setting, Apple is developing another option to block modal popups on specific websites viewed in Safari. Modal popups must be dismissed by tapping a Cancel or other button, and can look like system alerts. Apple also has a new API in the works to manage the process of cookie consent that many websites use.

The new WebKit features are labelled as "TBA," or to be announced, so it's unclear whether they will become available to use in Safari via future iOS 15 and macOS 12 updates or later in the year when the new operating system versions are released.

How do I change Safari to light mode?

By: Author Olin Wade (Remodel or Move Stuff)

To switch Safari to Light Mode, you’ll need to make sure the Dark Mode option is disabled. On a Mac, open System Preferences > General and make sure that the Use Dark Menu Bar and Dock setting is unchecked.

On an iOS device, go to Settings > Display & Brightness and make sure that the Dark Mode setting is off.

Once the Dark Mode option is disabled, Safari will now use the Light Mode instead. On a Mac, open the Safari window and choose View > Appearance > Light. On an iOS device, open the Safari window and choose Appearance Light.

After making these changes, Safari will now be in Light Mode and will show lighter colors.

How do I turn off Safari dark mode?

In order to turn off Safari dark mode, you will first need to access the general settings. To do this, open the Settings app on your device and scroll to the bottom until you see the Safari option. Tap on this and then select the Display & Brightness option.

In here, you will find the option for Dark Mode. To turn off the dark mode for Safari, simply toggle the switch to the off position.

Why is my Safari background dark?

The dark background on your Safari browser could be a result of various factors. First, it could be that you have enabled the ‘dark mode’ setting on your browser. In this mode, websites are displayed using a dark theme, resulting in a dark background.

Additionally, your Safari browser may be loading a dark theme from a website you’re visiting. Furthermore, it is possible that the dark color and contrast settings have been manually adjusted on your computer.

To adjust this, navigate to the system preferences and find the ‘Accessibility’ tab. There, you can set your display preferences to your liking. Finally, there could be an issue with the extension you are using, which could be resulting in a darker display.

To fix this, update or disable extensions in the browser settings.

Why are my Safari Tabs black?

Safari tabs turning black is likely an issue of settings with the browser. Depending on your version of Safari and what type of computer you have, you can adjust settings to change the color of your tabs.

For Apple computers running the macOS version of Safari, the dark appearance of a tab can be changed in the “Appearance” settings. If you go to Safari Preferences and select “Appearance”, you should be able to pick between a light and a dark theme.

On some computers, the New Tab page can also be used to toggle between dark and light appearance settings. To do this, open a new tab page and look at the bottom right of the page. There should be an option to toggle between light and dark themes.

For Windows computers, the settings to change the appearance of your tabs are in the Advanced settings. Go to Safari Preferences, then select “Advanced” to open the Advanced settings window. There should be a checkbox that says “Show tabs in dark theme”.

Check this box and your tabs will switch to a black color.

If you are using a different version of Safari and the above steps do not work, check the official Safari help site for more information on how to adjust the settings to change the appearance of your tabs.

How do you change Safari background color?

Changing the background color of Safari can be done by making a few changes in the web browser’s Settings. First, open Safari and click the ‘Safari’ menu item in the toolbar and select ‘Preferences. ‘ Next, click the ‘Appearance’ tab at the top of the window.

Under ‘Display Page Colors’ you will see two options for how you want to display the background color of webpages. By default, Safari will be set to ‘White. ‘ Select ‘Show Page Background Colors’ if you want to display the background color of the webpage you are viewing.

Finally, click the aptly-named ‘Page Background Color’ at the bottom of the window and select the color you would like from the color palette. You can also select a custom color by clicking ‘Other. ‘ Once you have completed these steps, the background color of webpages you visit will be changed!.

Can you change the color of your Safari?

No, unfortunately it is not possible to change the color of the Safari browser. Safari is pre-built to the device’s design and there isn’t a way to customize it. On the other hand, there are a few ways you can still customize the look and feel of your Safari browser.

First, you can change the appearance of your Safari browser by changing the background wallpaper on your device. This way, you can give your browser a unique look that’s different from the default design.

Second, you can add some extensions and plugins to your browser, which can give you more enhanced features and provide you with a different look and feel. For example, there are several Safari Themes and Skin packs available, which you can use to change the overall look of the UI.

Finally, you can try out some third-party browsers, such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, which give users the option to customize the look and feel. Both of these alternative browsers offer more flexibility and options than Safari, so if you’re looking to change the color of your browser, they might be a better option.

How do I get rid of a black background on Google?

If you’re trying to get rid of a black background in your Google searches, it’s most likely caused by a Google setting. To get rid of the black background, log in to your Google account. On the homepage, click on the grid icon in the upper right-hand corner and select “Settings” from the drop down menu.

On the Settings page, scroll down, and under “Appearance,” select “Classic,” instead of “Black. ” This should automatically remove the black background from your searches. If you’re still seeing a black background, then you can also manually change the background color.

To do this, click on “Custom colours” next to the “Classic” option in the Appearance tab. You can choose any color you’d like from the available color palette. Once you’ve found a color that you like, click “Save” and the black background should be gone.

Why is Chrome suddenly dark?

Chrome suddenly changing to dark may be caused by a recent update of Chrome, or a change in your operating system. If you are running macOS Mojave or later, Chrome will automatically use the dark mode, without any user action needed.

The dark mode is based on the color combination of your device, so if you flip your device, Chrome will adjust accordingly. You can also manually enable or disable this setting in the ‘Appearance’ section of Chrome Settings, or by going to System Preferences > General in macOS.

Lastly, if your Chrome theme has the ‘Always follow system settings’ option enabled, it will automatically switch to dark mode if the operating system has already defaulted to dark mode.

Why did my Google background turn black?

Your Google background may have turned black due to a few different reasons. One possible reason is that a Chrome extension you have installed in your browser may have changed the background of your Google page.

Additionally, some themes available in the Chrome Web Store may change the background of your browser and subsequently the Google page.

It’s also possible that a setting in Google Chrome could have changed the background of your Google page. To check if this is the case, open up the Chrome options (by click on the three dots in the top-right corner and selecting ‘settings’), then navigating to the ‘Appearance’ section.

If ‘Show Home Button’ is selected, click on ‘Change to white’ under the ‘reset to default’ setting.

Finally, you may have unintentionally changed the background of your Google page. To do this, simply open up your Google page (www. google. com) and click on the gear icon located in the bottom-right corner of the page.

This will open up the ‘Change Background’ page where you can choose a background image or background color. Select the background you want, and you should be all set.

Why is my background black on Safari?

If your background is appearing black when you open up a webpage on Safari, it could be due to a few different things. First, it could be due to how you have your browser settings set. If your settings are set to a dark/black mode, that could be causing webpages to appear with a black background.

You can check your settings and change it to “light” mode if that is the issue.

Another potential issue could be with the website you are viewing. Many websites are created with specific settings, and if it is programmed with a black background, you may see that color appear when you view the site.

It is also worth checking your computer’s display settings, as well as making sure you have the most updated version of Safari. Older versions of Safari may cause some unwanted display issues. If after checking all of these settings, you are still experiencing an issue, then reach out to the website developer for further assistance.

Apple touts major 60% leap in Safari and WebKit performance

Avatar for Chance Miller

Apple’s WebKit team has published a new blog post this week detailing how they’ve made significant upgrades to Safari’s performance over the last several months. The improvements come following the debut of Speedometer 3.0 in March, described as a “major step forward in making the web faster for all.”

Back in March, Apple, Google, and Mozilla teamed up to launch the new Speedometer 3 browser benchmark. The goal of Speedometer 3 is to “create a shared understanding of web performance so that improvements can be made to enhance the user experience.”

The results provided by Speedometer 3 offer more details on how the test “captures and calculates scores, show more detailed results and introduce an even wider variety of workloads.” Apple says:

The introduction of Speedometer 3.0 is a major step forward in making the web faster for all, and allowing Web developers to make websites and web apps that were not previously possible.

Apple’s WebKit team says that it has successfully improved Safari’s Speedometer 3.0 score by ~60% between the release of Safari 17.0 in September and Safari 17.4’s release in March. These improvements, Apple says, mean that developers can build websites and web apps that are faster than ever before:

With all these optimizations and dozens more, we were able to improve the overall Speedometer 3.0 score by ~60% between Safari 17.0 and Safari 17.4. Even though individual progressions were often less than 1%, over time, they all stacked up together to make a big difference. Because some of these optimizations also benefited Speedometer 2.1, Safari 17.4 is also ~13% faster than Safari 17.0 on Speedometer 2.1. We’re thrilled to deliver these performance improvements to our users allowing web developers to build websites and web apps that are more responsive and snappier than ever.

The full blog post has a ton of technical details on the work that has been done to optimize WebKit and Safari for Speedometer 3.0.

how-to-change-safari-to-white-mode

Introduction

Safari, the sleek and efficient web browser developed by Apple, offers a range of customization options to cater to users' diverse preferences. One such feature is the ability to switch between light and dark modes, allowing users to personalize their browsing experience based on their visual comfort and aesthetic preferences. While the default dark mode may be preferred by some for its reduced eye strain in low-light environments, others may find the light mode more visually appealing and easier to read.

In this guide, we will explore the step-by-step process of changing Safari to white mode, also known as light mode. Whether you're looking to brighten up your browsing experience or simply prefer the classic white background, this tutorial will walk you through the simple yet effective method of making the switch. By following these straightforward instructions, you can effortlessly transform the appearance of Safari to suit your individual taste and enhance your overall browsing experience.

Let's delve into the process of transitioning Safari to white mode, allowing you to enjoy a refreshing and visually pleasing browsing environment.

Step 1: Open Safari

To initiate the process of changing Safari to white mode, the first step is to open the Safari browser on your device. Whether you are using a Mac computer, iPhone, or iPad, locating and launching the Safari application is the initial action required to access the browser's settings and preferences.

On a Mac computer, you can easily open Safari by clicking on the Safari icon located in the dock at the bottom of the screen or by accessing it from the Applications folder. Alternatively, you can utilize Spotlight Search by pressing Command + Space and typing "Safari" to quickly locate and open the browser .

For iPhone or iPad users, simply locate the Safari app icon on the home screen or within the app library and tap on it to launch the browser. Once Safari is open, you are ready to proceed to the next step in the process of transitioning to white mode.

By successfully completing this step, you have gained access to the Safari browser, setting the stage for the subsequent actions that will enable you to customize the appearance of the browser to your desired preference. With Safari now open, you are prepared to navigate to the necessary settings and preferences to initiate the transition to white mode, enhancing the visual aesthetics and readability of your browsing experience.

Step 2: Go to Safari Preferences

Upon successfully launching Safari, the next pivotal step in transitioning to white mode involves accessing the Safari Preferences . This step is essential as it grants you entry to a plethora of customization options, allowing you to tailor your browsing experience to your specific preferences.

On a Mac computer, navigating to Safari Preferences is a straightforward process. At the top left corner of the screen, you will find the Safari menu. Click on "Safari" in the menu bar, and a drop-down list will appear. Towards the bottom of this list, you will find the "Preferences" option. Click on "Preferences," and a new window will open, presenting you with a range of customization categories to explore.

For iPhone and iPad users, the process of accessing Safari Preferences is equally intuitive. After launching Safari, tap on the "Settings" icon, which resembles a gear, typically located on the home screen or within the app library. Scroll down and locate "Safari" in the list of apps. Tapping on "Safari" will reveal a multitude of customizable settings, including those related to appearance and display.

By accessing Safari Preferences, you gain the ability to fine-tune various aspects of the browser, ranging from general settings to security, privacy, and appearance. This centralized hub empowers users to personalize their browsing experience, ensuring that it aligns with their unique preferences and requirements.

Upon reaching the Safari Preferences interface, you are now poised to progress to the subsequent step, which involves selecting the "Appearance" category. This pivotal action will pave the way for the seamless transition to white mode, enabling you to elevate the visual aesthetics of your browsing environment and optimize readability.

Successfully navigating to Safari Preferences marks a significant milestone in the process of transitioning to white mode, positioning you to delve into the realm of customization options and embark on the journey towards a visually refreshing and personalized browsing experience.

Step 3: Select Appearance

Having successfully accessed the Safari Preferences, the next crucial step in the process of transitioning to white mode involves selecting the "Appearance" category. This pivotal action serves as the gateway to a spectrum of visual customization options, allowing you to tailor the look and feel of Safari to align with your personal preferences.

Upon entering the Safari Preferences interface, you will encounter a series of tabs representing different categories. Among these, the "Appearance" tab stands out as the focal point for refining the visual presentation of the browser. By clicking on the "Appearance" tab, you gain access to a range of settings that directly influence the overall look of Safari, including the option to switch between light and dark modes.

In the "Appearance" section, you will typically find a selection of themes or modes that determine the color scheme and overall visual style of the browser. Here, you can explore the available options and effortlessly transition to white mode by selecting the designated light theme. This simple yet impactful action instantly transforms the background of Safari to a crisp, bright white, enhancing the overall readability and visual appeal of the browsing environment.

For users who prioritize a clean and classic browsing experience, the white mode offers a timeless aesthetic that complements various types of content, from articles and websites to images and videos.
