Frequently asked questions about this trip

How difficult is the trek.

The difficulty depends on where and how long you want to trek. The short trek is easy while the long trek requires some physical fitness.

What is altitude sickness?

Altitude sickness is normally known as acute mountain sickness. This can happen when people rapidly climb up to an altitude of more than 3000 meters. We ensure minimal risk by adding rest to our trekking itineraries. Most people will feel some effects of altitude, some shortness of breath and possibly light headache, this is normal enough. Acute mountain sickness patients are quite different and usually have a serious headache, sickness, and lose awareness. In almost all possible cases there are sufficient warning signs to take action properly. Descending to a lower altitude is usually enough to prevent any further problems.

What type of accommodation is available during the trekking?

There are mainly tea houses and lodges available for trekking and they are usually made using local materials and are very comfortable. These accommodations are often family-run and usually provide single and double rooms. The dining room is on the ground floor and is often on fire. All food will be cooked in order in the family kitchen. Toilet facilities are sometimes separate and sometimes outside. Most lodges provide mattresses and blankets. It's a good idea to always have a sleeping bag, which can be useful, and perhaps an inflatable pillow.

How long do we walk every day on trekking?

Trekking programs are classified into three different categories: soft, moderate and hard. Soft treks are only about 7 days to 10 days in duration. They generally do not go above 4000 meters; you can expect to walk about 4-5 hours each day. Moderate treks are challenging enough and long treks that go to the high hill country. Physically exhausting, this involves trekking along the cliffs of the mountains for about 6-8 hours. Harder treks are longer treks that go farther away from the general abode of trekkers and tourists. These physically challenging treks involve walking for 7- 9 hours each day.

How much weight do I need to carry on the trek?

You carry some of your personal belongings, such as warm clothing, water, snacks, sun block, cameras and more. Generally, these items will be lightweight, from 5 to 10kg (10 to 20 pounds). Our porters are available for other heavy goods and for your information one porter would be sharing by two people. The maximum weight carried by one porter is total 20 kg. this means 10 kg. per person is allowed for the trek. In case if you wish to carry more than this weight then you need to hire additional porters.

What is the best time for trekking in Nepal?

October and November are considered as the best times for trekking in Nepal due to dry season. December and January are also considered good times for trekking but it is extremely cold at high altitudes.

Thank you a lot for your organization about my trek. It was a superb experience; all was perfect. Karma is a very nice person and a good guide. I appreciated trekking with Odyssey (a reliable Nepal trek operator). If I come back to Nepal, I will be happy to ask you to trek with me again. I am thinking about Annapurna or the Everest trek.

*****(5 star)

Have just returned from my fourth trip to Nepal and as always Odyssey Treks organized everything superbly. We visited Makalu relatively late in the season and were rewarded with empty trails and amazing weather. Karma was as entertaining, friendly, and informative as ever along with Ang Dawa Sherpa who together made the three weeks perfect.

They also organized a few days to Helambu at short notice as I had some time spare, all done easily and professionally. Thanks for the company both and I will be back again. I cannot recommend Odyssey highly enough as a genuinely friendly, locally based company that provides not only unforgettable experiences but also great service at a very reasonable cost.

Late-March to late April offers clear weather and relative calm before Everest expedition teams descend on the region and then the days start to become rainy and overcast in May.

October and November may be the most ideal time to visit, with most of the tourists gone and the monsoon season over, making way for crisp, pre-winter days. During these four months expect comfortable temperatures and blue skies during the day, and opportunities for some exceptional long exposure photography and many shooting stars at night.

If traveling between May and September, expect damp and overcast weather on the trail, and with it weather-related delays for flights in and out of Kathmandu.

During these months, the weather is generally dry and stable, and the skies are clear, offering stunning views of the mountains and the landscape. The highest point of the trek is the Sarangkot viewpoint at an elevation of 1,592 meters, which is reached on the third day of the trek. The trek takes around 3 to 4 days to complete, covering a distance of around 25 to 30 kilometers. The daily walking hours are around 4 to 6 hours, which is manageable for most people with a moderate level of fitness. It is recommended that you do some physical training and prepare for the trek, especially if you are a beginner. It is also important to acclimatize to the altitude and take enough breaks and rest to avoid altitude sickness.

In addition, travel insurance can also cover the costs of trip cancellations due to unforeseen circumstances such as flight cancellations, weather disruptions, or personal emergencies. When purchasing travel insurance, it is important to ensure that the policy covers trekking up to an altitude of at least 2,000 meters, as some policies may exclude coverage for high-altitude trekking. To prevent altitude sickness during the Dhampus Sarangkot Trek, it is important to properly acclimatize to the altitude by gradually ascending and taking rest days as needed. It is also recommended to drink plenty of fluids, avoid alcohol and caffeine, and eat a high-carbohydrate diet to provide the body with enough energy. If you do experience symptoms of altitude sickness during the trek, it is important to stop ascending and rest until the symptoms subside. You can also take over-the-counter medication such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen to help alleviate symptoms. In severe cases, descent to a lower altitude may be necessary. In addition, some natural remedies can also help alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness. Drinking coca tea, a traditional remedy used by the Andean people of South America, has been shown to help alleviate altitude sickness symptoms. Ginger tea, garlic soup, and other herbal remedies may also help alleviate symptoms.

Reviews of Dhampus Australian Camp Trek

Julian Khojasteh

From the responsiveness to my email, to the hospitality when I walked in, Babu was excellent to deal with. Very experienced and honest and was willing to work with me to find something that suited my plans.

Even when the weather caused havoc with my return to Kathmandu, Babu organised different flights to get me home without a problem.

The trek itself was well organised and I had a great time with Nanda. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t the best, so the views of the Himalayas were non existent, but that’s just the way it goes. Still had a great time and would definitely return to these guys.

  • Small Solar Panel (optional, recommended for iPods, iPhones, camera batteries, Kindles)
  • Zip-Lock | Plastic Bags
  • Rehydration | Electrolytes
  • Personal Medical Supplies
  • Micro Spikes
  • Medical Supplies
  • We strongly suggest bringing Western meds with you as there are a lot of Indian fakes on the market! Suggested: Diamox, Azithromycin, Ciprofloxacin, Tinidazole, or Flagyl & Augmentin. Bring COMPEED for covering blisters & good tasting electrolytes &/or rehydration salts (Emergen-C is a good American brand). The local versions aren’t very appealing.
  • We also recommend bringing strong knee & ankle supports & braces, ACE bandages for sprains & strains, Tegaderm &/or other would coverings. Duct tape is always useful. We’re happy to take excess medical supplies off your hands when you leave if you won’t need them and pass them on to others. We use lots of the large amount we have with us to treat locals we meet when trekking.

Australian Camp

These treks are suitable for any walker looking for something a little more challenging and energetic. They are a combination of some longer and shorter walks and hill-walking experience is desirable. The duration is usually from 10 to 15 days. Following the up and down terrain of Nepal and walking to higher elevations contrasts these treks to those in the easy classification. However, you will be rewarded for your efforts with spectacular close-up views of glaciers and of the high Himalayas. Although the terrain is not difficult, some vigorous hiking experience is useful. There may be up to 6 hours a day on the trail and the elevation rises and falls from 800m/ 2624ft to 4000m/13210ft above sea level.

The trek Start

Starting from your Pokhara Hotel, the Dhampus Australian camp trek will begin with a drive to Kande Naudanda at 7 AM. Afterward, we will hike for 2 hours to Australian Camp to enjoy a panoramic view of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. These are the trails that go to the Mardi Himal trek and Annapurna Base Camp trek .  In addition, we will spend quality time with locals, kids from the Australian camp villages, and friendly workers. After visiting the Dhampus Phedi , we will return back to Pokhara the next day. While walking through the colorful beautiful rhododendrons. As well as walking through the forest for 3 hours through Dhampus villages to get to Dhampus Phedi.

Distance from Pokhara to Australian Base Camp

The distance from Pokhara to the Australian Camp is approximately 26 kilometers . After driving to Kande village, you will need to hike towards Australian Camp to reach your destination. An average hike from Kande to Australian Base Camp takes approximately 2 hours.

The hiking trail from Kande to Australian Camp is well-maintained and well-managed . It is easy to walk on the stone-paved old trekking trail. You will pass through a beautiful forest of Rhododendrons before arriving at the Camp. You can enjoy bird sounds, a mountain view, and a valley view during this 1-hour walk.

You can find a couple of guest houses where you can spend the night but do not expect luxury accommodations like in Pokhara , though there is Angels Haven Guest House & Restaurant located in Australian Camp, Dhampus, Kaski, Nepal, and some other guest houses as well. The dining hall offers a beautiful view of the mountains.

Best Session to Visit Australian Camp

The Australian camp hiking trip is accessible all year round, but you shouldn’t hike during the monsoon season from June to August. Muddy trails may hinder your adventure and cloudy days may obscure the essence of the Australian camp. It is also safe to trek to the Australian camp-Dhampus in winter since it does not rise too high altitudes. The winter nights are cold and chilly during the winter days.

The best time to trek in the Australian camp is during the spring and autumn seasons. During these months of the year, the weather is clear and pleasant with lots of greenery surrounding us as well as clear skies above us. The Spring season ( March-May ) is the time when nature is at its most vibrant. There is a lot of life in the forest and along the trails with a variety of flora and fauna enjoying the warm weather after the harsh winter. Autumn (September-November) is also a great time to go hiking as the environment is fresh after the rain showers. A clear view of the Himalayan range can also be seen from the Australian Camp and from the Dhampus Village . The weather during this season is neither too hot nor too cold, which makes it a pleasant and relaxing journey in the countryside.
