How to clear your web browsing history.

Clearing your browsing history on iPhone and iPad in Safari has been a straightforward affair for years now.

Sometimes, you may want a fresh start with your web browsing — perhaps to get rid of some history that may bring up a memory you'd rather forget as you type in a website URL in the address bar.

Apple makes this feature very easy to access on both the iPhone and iPad by offering two ways to clear your history. So with this in mind, here's how you can do just that and make a fresh start in Safari .

Viewing your web history in iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 is very easy to do — and it's all done from Safari.

  • In Safari, tap the Bookmarks button in the toolbar that's below the address bar.
  • Tap the History icon in the upper right corner. Here, you can view your entire web history.

To search for bookmarks, tap the Bookmarks button in the toolbar at the bottom of the app, then select the Bookmark icon.

  • Use the History search bar to find previously viewed pages.

To find History, tap the History menu. Then use the search to find previously viewed information.

If the time calls to wipe most or all of your web browsing history in Safari, here's how to do it on both iPhone and iPad.

To note, the below steps will be the same if you attempt to wipe your web browsing history on an iPhone 15 Pro Max , and an iPad Mini 6 for example.

  • In Safari, tap the Bookmarks button.
  • Select the History icon in the upper right corner.
  • Tap Clear and select how much history you'd like to clear: the last hour, the last day, 48 hours' worth, or all recorded history.

One more thing… A feature no one talks about

Privacy on the web matters more than ever in these modern times. Websites store the pages you click on, especially when you sign into a page that can contain personal information about you.

It's great to have a feature like this in Safari — but it would be good to have this automated. To tell Apple's web browser to automatically clear history after 24 hours would be very useful, as you wouldn't leave a trail behind.

Regardless, it's still a good feature, and one you should use every week.

Luckily, deleting browsing history on Safari is easy and can be done in just a few taps, and is the same on iOS and iPadOS, so whether you're using an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPad Air , these steps will apply.

How to clear recent history in safari on iphone and ipad.

Want to erase some of your iPhone's browsing history?

Quick Links

How to erase single entries in safari's history list.

Normally, Safari on iPhone and iPad keeps track of which sites you visit in a special History list. While it's possible to completely wipe your history in Settings , you can also erase only more recent history if you'd like. Here's how.

First, open Safari on your iPhone or iPad. Tap the "Bookmarks" button (which looks like an open book). On the iPad, you'll find it in the upper-left corner of the screen beside the address bar. On an iPhone, it's at the bottom of the screen.

In the pop-up that appears (on the left side of the screen on iPad and over the whole screen on iPhone), tap the History tab (which looks like a clock face), and then tap the "Clear" button.

(Don't worry. It won't clear anything yet.)

After you tap "Clear," another pop-up will give you yet another choice. You can select "All time," "Today and yesterday," "Today," or "The last hour."

Choosing one of these options will remove your browsing history, cookies, and other browsing data from the point you select until now. For example, if you click "Today," all the browsing history from sites you visited today will disappear, but everything earlier than that will remain on the list.

Tap the option you'd prefer (or you can tap outside the pop-up box to cancel).

If you made a selection from the pop-up list, your browsing history will be cleared accordingly. It's all very quick and handy.

Oh, and one more thing before you go: In Safari's History list, you can also delete individual entries by swiping to the left on them with your finger. When a red "Delete" button appears on the right, tap it.

Using this method, only the single entry you just swiped will be zapped. This can be a nice, laser-focused way of erasing certain history items without having to clear everything at once. Happy browsing!

The Apple Safari web browser keeps a log of your search history and the websites that you visit. Learn how to manage your browsing history in Safari and how to browse privately.

Instructions in this article apply to Safari for Mac computers with OS X Yosemite (10.10) through macOS Catalina (10.15) and Apple mobile devices with iOS 8 through iOS 14.

How to Manage Safari History on macOS

Safari has long been the standard web browser for macOS . Here's how to manage Safari's history on a Mac:

Open the Safari browser and select  History  in the menu bar located at the top of the screen.

You'll see a drop-down menu with the titles of the web pages you visited recently. Select a website to load the respective page or select one of the previous days at the bottom of the menu to see more options.

To clear your Safari browsing history and other site-specific data that's stored locally, choose  Clear History  at the bottom of the History  drop-down menu.

If you want to keep website data (like saved passwords and other autofill information), go to  History  >  Show All History . Press Cmd + A  to select everything, then press  Delete to remove your browser history while retaining website data.

Select the period you want to clear from the drop-down menu. Options include the last hour , today , today and yesterday , and all history .

Select Clear History to delete the list of sites.

If you sync your Safari data with any Apple mobile devices using iCloud , the history on those devices is cleared as well.

How to Use Private Browsing in Safari

To prevent websites from appearing in the browser history, use Private Browsing. To open a private window in Safari, go to File > New Private Window , or use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Command + N .

When you close the private window, Safari doesn't remember your search history, the web pages you visited, or any autofill information. The only distinguishing feature of the new window is that the address bar is tinted dark gray. The browsing history for all tabs in this window remains private.

In Safari for Windows , select the settings gear and choose Private Browsing from the drop-down menu.

How to Manage History in Safari on iOS Devices

The Safari app is part of the iOS operating system used in the Apple iPhone , iPad, and iPod touch . To manage the Safari browsing history on an iOS device:

Tap the  Safari app to open it.

Tap the Bookmarks  icon at the bottom of the screen. It resembles an open book.

Tap the History icon at the top of the screen that opens. It resembles a clock face.

Scroll through the screen for a website to open. Tap an entry to open the page in Safari.

To clear the browsing history, tap  Clear  at the bottom of the History screen.

Choose one of the four options:  The last hour , Today , Today and yesterday , and  All time .

Clearing your Safari history also removes cookies and other browsing data. If your iOS device is signed into your iCloud account, the browsing history is removed from other devices that are signed in.

Tap  Done  to exit the screen and return to the browser page.

If you only want to remove individual sites from your Safari history, swipe left on the entry, then tap Delete .

How to Use Private Browsing in Safari on iOS Devices

You can also use Private Browsing in iOS to prevent your Safari search history and web data from being saved:

Open the Safari app and then press and hold the tabs icon (the two overlapping boxes) at the bottom of the screen.

Tap Private .

Tap the plus sign to open a private browsing window.

When you are in private browsing, the background of the URL address bar is black instead of light gray. Enter a URL or search term as usual.

When you are ready to go back to regular browsing, tap the tabs icon and then tap Private to turn off private browsing.

How to clear your browsing history on an iPad in three different ways

  • You can clear your Internet browsing history off an iPad in several different ways — removing individual sites visits, or scrubbing batches of or all of your history.
  • If you use a shared iPad or one from your workplace or school, it's important to remove any history that could cause issues with human resources or the administration.
  • Clearing a long backlog of history can make your iPad more efficient as you browse the web by removing out-of-date data cached on the device.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories .

Maybe you use an iPad loaned to you by your school or office, or maybe you just ran a quick search on your kid's iPad (or on your parent's device) that you'd rather not become a part of the next dinner table conversation.

Whatever your reasons for wanting to clear the history on an iPad may be, clearing said searches and site visits is quick and easy.

And periodically clearing the history off your iPad can make the device work faster when it comes to web browsing, as a backlog of old cookies and other data can slow downloading speeds if the data is out of date.

How to clear individual pieces of history on an iPad

If you just want to remove one or two searches or sites you visited off an iPad's history, follow this approach.

1. Launch the Safari app.

2. Tap the icon at the top left of the screen that looks like an open book.

3. Tap on the clock icon under the word "History."

4. Locate the item to be cleared, swipe left a bit, and tap delete, or swipe all the way left on the item to automatically delete it.

How to clear larger periods of history on an iPad

If you need to clear the last hour, day, two-day, or all-time history off your iPad, again start with the open book icon found at the top left of the Safari browser.

1. Tap the clock icon.

2. Tap the word "Clear" at the bottom right of the History popup window.

3. Select the period of history you want to clear (The last hour, Today, etc.), and tap it.

How to clear all online history on an iPad

If you want to wipe out not just your all-time browsing history (as depicted above) but an iPad's entire online history, including cookies and all cached search and site data, you can do that through the Settings app.

1. Open the Settings app and open the Safari tab.

2. In the window that appears on the right, scroll down to the blue words reading "Clear History and Website Data" and tap it.

3. Tap the red word "Clear" on the popup window.

Just keep in mind that this will remove all your pre-loaded login information, so if you'll still be keeping the iPad, you'll have a lot of usernames and passwords to re-enter.

Browser history on ipad: how to see it and how to clear it.

Browser and search history is a record of the websites you’ve visited and the searches you’ve conducted while using a web browser. This history is stored locally on your iPad, allowing you to revisit previously visited sites and view past search queries.

By default, browsers will save all your browsing and search history unless you have changed the settings.

This feature is handy when you can’t remember the website you visited. You can just check the history. It also comes in handy if you want to visit websites and want to keep them private(I would recommend Incognito Mode for this purpose).

In this article, I’ll demonstrate how to review your search history on iPad in both Safari and Google Chrome browsers, and, of course, I’ll show you how to delete or remove specific queries.

How To View iPad Browser History (Safari)

safari browser history on ipad

  • Open ‘Safari’ web browser
  • Tap on the ‘Tabs’ button at the top left corner
  • Tap on ‘History’

You can even search for a specific website in the search history.

There, you will be able to see all the websites and searches that are made in Safari. If you’re using multiple devices within the same iCloud account and have enabled sync across devices, you will also see browser history from other devices.

For example, if you have searched on Google from your iPhone for “best iPads” you will also see that on your iPad.

Delete Browsing History

find history on safari ipad

  • Swipe left on the entries/websites you want to delete and tap on ‘Delete.’ Or tap on edit and select the entries you want to delete. You can even delete an entire day.

By deleting the website or search query, you erase it from your history, ensuring no one discovers your specific online activities on Safari.

Delete All History

You can also delete all the browsing, search history, cookies, and cache at once in the Safari browser.

  • Open ‘Settings’
  • Scroll down and tap on ‘Safari’
  • Scroll down and tap on ‘Clear History and Website Data’

A warning will pop up, and you have to confirm that you want to delete your history. Once you tap on Clear , your history, including your Google searches, will be gone from your device. It will remove cookies, too. Just remember that you can’t recover your data after you delete everything.

How To Block Cookies

  • Tap on ‘Safari’
  • Tap on ‘Advanced’ at the bottom
  • Toggle ‘Block all Cookies’ on

How To View iPad Browser History (Google Chrome)

See the websites you have visited from the iPad. Or see what websites your kids or spouse have visited.

  • Tap on the ‘three-dots’ at the top right corner
  • Tap on the ‘History’

And voila! You can browse all the sites you have visited. You can check today’s history, yesterday’s, last week’s, etc. You can even type in the websites and find specific dates when the website was visited.

You can also delete your browser’s history if necessary, and here’s how you can do it.

  • Tap on ‘Edit’ and select the websites you want to delete.
  • Or you can tap on ‘Clear Browsing Data’.

By selecting ‘Clear Browsing Data’ you can select what you want to delete. For instance, you can clear your browsing history only and leave all your cookies and other files. You have to confirm that you want to delete the browsing data, and that’s it!

Troubleshooting, how to search safari browser history on iphone & ipad.

Search Safari history in iOS

Did you know you can search through web browsing history in Safari on an iPhone or iPad? With the excellent Safari History search feature you can easily retrieve and find previously visited sites, webpages, and videos, whether from earlier in the day or even well over a year ago – assuming the searchable Safari history has not been removed anyway.

This offers a fantastic tool to track down old web content that you may have a hard time finding on it’s own. For example, if you knew you watched a web video somewhere about a topic like “Carl Sagan” but can’t quite remember what it was or where it was located on the web, you can search for that term and all history matching the search terms will be retrieved.

How to Search Browser History on Safari for iPhone, iPad

All modern versions of Safari in iOS have searchable history, here’s how it works:

  • From the Safari app on iPhone or iPad, tap the bookmarks / history button (it looks like an open book icon)

Search Safari browser history on iOS

  • Choose the the book tab and go to the History section
  • At the top of the History section, tap into the “Search History” box

Search Safari browser history on iOS

  • Type your search query term to search Safari browser history on the iOS device

Search Safari browser history on iPhone and iPad

If you tap on any searched history result, the page or site will immediately open in Safari.

In the example above, I searched for “Charlie Rose” to track down an old interview I had watched on YouTube, and the video I was searching for was found immediately.

You can search through any search history on Safari on the iOS device, even history that is quite a bit older, as long as you (or the user) has not cleared Safari history on the device being searched.

Note that if you use Safari and iCloud on an iPhone or iPad as well as another device, you will have other devices history to search through as well – even if it was not searched for on the current device. This is a feature of iCloud and is available to users with the same Apple ID and iCloud enabled on multiple iOS and Mac OS devices.

You can also search for an item match in Safari history and then remove that specific page from Safari history in iOS after it has been matched and found, offering a way to selectively clear history from a device without wiping it all.

The step “From the Safari app on iPhone or iPad, tap the bookmarks / history button (it looks like an open book icon)” is inaccurate. My iPad lacks such a button.

Bookmarks and history is indeed a feature in Safari for iPad. Make sure you are using Safari and not another browser.

I would like to see Michael Frank’s location at the exact time I am looking for him everything was working fine when I first bought this phone now everything is messed up my map is completely incorrect with names of streets and highways doing what he did and I can never get Michael Franks timeline

I would like to see my partner that I share location with timeline and location when I look up his location why is it that he can see me perfectly fine but I can never see where he is

Only seems to go back 2 weeks to 1 month, is this accurate?

The Safari browser cache will usually go back as far either the last time the cache was emptied, or when the device age is, or when the device was last restored from. Safari in iOS can contain a significant time of browsing cache, depending on those circumstances and perhaps others too.

Searching safari history on my iPhone… how far back will the history go? I see only a month. I need two months at least.

You need to mention the search history section does not display unless you pull down on the list. It’s hidden at the top by default. Thanks

Nope I don’t get a history tab if I pull down

How can I download or put safari back on my iPad I have the icon but no app when I pull up. To use it

I do not have the history section on all my IOS devices, even I didn’t clear the history. I can see them on macOS but not on IOS. Any idea why?

Having all your browser history on iPad can sometimes come in handy, especially if you want to know the websites you visited on a particular date and time. Or you may probably want to visit a website you once checked out but no longer recall its URL. But if you intentionally or accidentally deleted your browser history, it can bring some trouble.

Don't panic! There are still chances to recover deleted browsing history. Let’s share with you three methods you can use to check history after deleted on iPad .

check history on ipad after deleted

Method 1. Easiest Way to Find Deleted History on iPad

Method 2. find deleted history on ipad from settings, method 3. find deleted history on ipad via icloud web.

Any data you deleted on the iPad will not be permanently removed until you overwrite it with other data. So, using a data recovery tool will help you get back the deleted files directly from your iOS device.

This tool will scan your iPad and find deleted Safari history for you. Therefore, even if you don't have any backup, it can also help you check history on iPad even after deleted. Moreover, it has an easy-to-use interface, making it easy to use for even first-time and less-savvy users.

Key Features of iSeeker:

It supports more than 18 types of data, including photos , videos , text messages , WhatsApp data and more.

It is compatible with iOS versions from iOS 9 to iOS 16 .

It recovers data lost in various scenarios, such as deletion, iOS update , iOS device damaged.

It provides a free trial before purchase, with which you can scan and preview the lost data on your iPhone.

Secure Download

Steps to check history on iPad after deleted using iSeeker:

Step 1. Install iSeeker to your Mac or Windows computer. After the installation is complete, launch the apps and choose Recover from iOS device mode from the list on the left. Connect your iPad to your computer with a USB cable. Click Next once your iPad is detected.

recover from iOS device

Step 2. The app will now display the various types of files that you can recover. Choose Safari History and click Scan . iSeeker will scan your iPad’s storage to find all your Safari history. This will take a few minutes, depending on how much history you initially had in your Safari.

select and scan the data types you want to recover

Step 3. After the scan is completed, you will be able to check all the Safari history deleted on iPad. You can choose to select all or a few that you need and click the Recover button to start the process. Once the process is complete, all your iPad’s Safari history will now be available in your browser.

select the specific files and recover

With this method, you will be able to see all your history on iPad including the ones you deleted from Safari that was deleted within the last 30 days. However, you will not be able to see your bookmarked website .

This method is also only for viewing your browser history; you can't restore the history to your Safari app. You also won't see the date and time you accessed the various websites. But if you want to go ahead and use this method, follow these steps below.

Steps to check history on iPad after deleted from Settings:

Open the Settings app on your iPad. Scroll down and choose Safari .

Under Safari settings, tap the Advanced option. It is the very last option on this page.

view Safari history on iPad in settings

Click Website Data . This will display all the URLs you visited in the last couple of days.

Another method to check history and bookmarks on iPad after deleted via iCloud Web.

However, you will only be able to recover bookmarks deleted in the last 40 days. All the browsing data that was deleted before the previous 40 days won't be available on the iCloud web.

You can use the steps below to check and recover your deleted browsing history via iCloud web:

Launch a browser of your choice and visit iCloud.com . Sign in with your Apple ID and password to access the data on your iCloud account.

Once you are logged in, click Account Settings . Within your Account Settings, click the Restore Bookmarks option located on the bottom left of the Advanced section.

restore bookmarks from iCloud.com

Select the bookmarks you would like to recover and click on the Restore button. Now all your bookmarks should be restored, and you can access them on iPad’s Safari browser.

choose bookmarks to restore on iPad

As you might have seen, the method will only help you find deleted bookmarks on iPad. If you haven't added the website to the bookmarks, then you can't check the deleted history using this method. And if you want to recover your deleted browsing history to Safari on iPad, your best choice is to use iSeeker (as discussed in method 1 ).

You can choose any of the three methods we have discussed to check history on iPad after deleted, depending on your situation. Method 2 is simple, but it will only give you limited details of your browsing history. Then method 3 is only for recovering bookmarks.

Overall, the most reliable method that will enable you to check and recover all your deleted Safari history on iPad is using WooTechy iSeeker . This method also doesn’t require you to have made a prior backup of your iPad. Download it now and check your deleted history on iPad with the free trial now!

How to delete your search history

Posted on April 18th, 2024 by Douglas Crawford in Privacy basics .

find history on safari ipad

Your search history is a window into your inner life . Anyone with access to it knows what your hobbies and interests are, your sexual orientation and preferences, the things that worry you (for example your medical concerns), your political affiliations, your financial situation, and much more.

In this article, we’ll explore why it’s important to delete your search and (closely related) browsing history and how to do it, but also the limitations of deleting your search and browsing history. Unfortunately, you can’t delete everything that’s out there.

However, moving forward, you can take steps to prevent others from seeing and logging your search and browsing history in the first place. We’ll also discuss these.

Why you should delete your search history

  • How to delete Google search history on your desktop

Does turning off personalized ads prevent google from tracking me.

  • Prevention is always better than a cure

As we noted above, your search history and browsing history reveal a great deal about you. This highly personal information is extremely valuable for the purposes of surveillance and influencing your behaviors.

Targeted advertising

The more advertising and analytics companies know about you, the more successfully they can target you with ever more personalized ads. Our analysis found that your data may be worth over $600 a year for advertising purposes alone.

Alphabet (Google’s parent company) is now worth over $1.9 trillion , a staggering fortune, made by offering services that are almost entirely “free” to use, but which it monetizes by selling your search queries to advertising and analytics companies.

Google so dominates the search engine landscape that searching for anything online is now commonly referred to as “googling”, and its search services form the backbone of the other services it offers, such as Google Maps, Gmail, Google Calendar, and more.

Government mass surveillance

In 2013, Edward Snowden exposed the stupefying scale and ambition of the United States and United Kingdom’s mass surveillance programs, which operated on a “ collect it all ” principle to harvest data from almost everyone on the planet. Little has changed in real terms since then, and in many ways, things are now worse .

And it’s not just NSA and its 5 Eyes, 9 Eyes, and 14 Eyes allies that spy on your search history. Almost all governments have some form of mass surveillance system, even if it’s only legislation that requires internet service providers (ISPs ) to log their customers’ browsing histories and store this data where it can be accessed by government agencies for a certain amount of time.

How to delete Google search history

You can tell Google to delete your search history. Whether it really deletes it is hard to know, but doing this probably prevents Google from using past search history to directly target you with ads or selling it to third-party advertising and analytics companies. It’s anybody’s guess whether governments can still access this “deleted” data.

How to delete Google search history on your desktop

The easiest way to delete your entire Google search history across all apps and devices is using a desktop browser. To do this:

1. Visit myactivity.google.com/myactivity and sign in with your Google account. You can now review the information Google keeps about you. When you’re ready, click Delete .

How to delete Google search history on mobile apps

On mobile devices, each individual Google app allows you to delete your search history. In some cases, doing this only deletes your search history for that app, while in others, you can delete your search history for that app across all your devices.

In some apps, you get taken to the My Google Activity page, where you can manage and delete your search history for all Google apps and services you use. For example:

Deleting your search history in the Google Play Store only deletes your search history on the Play Store app on the current device.

Open the Play Store app on your Android device or Chromebook. Tap your profile picture and go to Settings →  General → Account and device preferences → Clear device search history .

How to delete your browser search history

Of course, it may not just be Google and your government that you’d rather not see your search history. Deleting your browser search history prevents friends, family, and colleagues who have physical access to your device from seeing what you’ve been up to online.

In this section, we’ll look at how to delete your search history in a selection of popular browsers on different platforms. Please be aware, though, that much like using incognito/private mode , deleting your browser history does nothing to prevent anyone on the internet from seeing your search history , such as your ISP or the websites you visit.

Learn about browsers that are good for your privacy

On the desktop, open Firefox and go to ☰ → Settings → Privacy & Security → History → Clear History… → T ime range to clear → select Everything from the dropdown menu (or whichever time range you prefer) → Clear now .

On your Android device, tap ☰ → History → ⋮ → Clear history (to delete all your search history).

You can ask Google to delete your search history from its apps, and you can delete any search history stored locally on your devices. However, your ISP can see every website you visit online, and almost all ISPs log this information (in many countries, they are required to do so by law).

In some counties (such as the United States), ISPs are permitted to sell customer data to advertisers . In almost every country, they will hand over the data at the request of law enforcement or government agencies.

No ISP will delete your browsing history just because you ask it to, so there’s little you can do about the data it already has. However, moving forward, you can prevent your ISP from seeing what you do by subscribing to a VPN service such as Proton VPN.

A VPN routes your internet connection from your device to a VPN server run by a commercial VPN service such as Proton VPN. The connection between your device and the VPN server is securely encrypted so that no one sitting between your device and the VPN server can see the contents of your data.

How a VPN works

DNS queries , which translate human-friendly URLs into computer-friendly numerical values, are usually handled by your ISP. But when you connect to a VPN, it routes these DNS queries through the encrypted VPN tunnel and handles them itself.

Learn more about how a VPN works

Your ISP can see that you’re connected to an IP address belonging to the VPN server but can’t see which websites you connect to after that.

Your ISP and websites you visit see the IP address of the VPN server

This means that connecting to a VPN prevents your ISP from seeing what you do online. And because most government mass surveillance programs rely on requiring ISPs to log their customers’ browsing activity, a trustworthy VPN is effective at preventing governments from collecting your search history through untargeted surveillance.

[ Protect your browsing history with Proton VPN ]

To prevent Google from using your browsing history to serve you personalized ads, head over to Google’s My Ad Center , sign in with your Google account, and toggle the Personalized ads switch off .

Turn off personalized ads in Google's My Ad Center

Please be aware, though, that turning off personalized ads in Google’s settings doesn’t stop Google from tracking your browsing history . But it does change how that data is used. When you opt out of personalized ads, Google will no longer use your browsing history to serve you ads based on your interests and behavior. Instead, you’ll receive ads based on factors like your general location or the content of the site you are visiting.

However, Google may still collect and use your data for other purposes, such as improving its services, developing new features, or ensuring the security of its systems. This data collection can include your search history, the videos you watch on YouTube, and your interactions with other Google services.

Final thoughts: Prevention is always better than a cure

Asking Google (and other online services) to delete your search history from within its apps is probably better than doing nothing at all to protect your privacy. But a far better way is to use apps and services that don’t collect your search history in the first place. For example:

  • Use Proton apps. When you search for emails in Proton Mail, events in Proton Calendar, or files in Proton Drive, the search is performed locally on your device . Just as our zero-access encryption ensures no one but you can access your data stored on Proton services, we also have no access to your search history.
  • Use your browser’s private or incognito mode . While your browser’s private or incognito mode will do nothing to prevent anyone on the internet from knowing what you do online, it will at least protect your online privacy from others who share your devices.
  • Use a privacy-focused search engine — Alternative search engines to Google, such as DuckDuckGo, don’t log your IP address or record your search history.
  • Block third-party cookies to prevent websites from tracking you across the internet.
  • If you must use Google, don’t search while signed in to your Google Account, and use a VPN so Google can’t link your IP address to your searches.

It’s not easy to stay private on the internet, but with some common sense and the help of privacy-focused services such Proton, it is possible to avoid most online tracking.

Safari Version 17.4.1 - Clicking Website Links Issue

Am running a MacBook Air M3 with the latest macOS Sonoma 14.41 and Safari Version 17.4.1

find history on safari ipad

Have noticed a fairy consistent issue, which involves website items such as buttons, menus etc not being clickable, ie the cursor doesn't change to the hand icon when hovering over the link.

find history on safari ipad

It's not all sites, and doesn't seem to be consistent. Reboots and history clear doesn't appear to resolve this sporadic issue.

Im an OOH WFH user and spend a lot of time in the safari browser (ticket systems, RMM, 365 Admin etc) and this is frustrating to say the least.

Again, there doesn't seem to be any consistency when this happens, it's very sporadic with both secure and non secure sites etc.

Anyone else experienced this?

Google Chrome vs. Apple Safari: Which browser is better on Mac

  • Cross-platform availability can make the switch from Chrome to Safari seamless, with data and preferences intact across devices.
  • Safari's user interface impresses with a clean layout, while Google Chrome offers more customization options in its Material You makeover.
  • Safari's memory usage advantage over Chrome on Mac with 8GB of RAM is a key factor to consider if performance is a concern.

As the default web browser on Mac, Safari has received a steady stream of updates over the last few years. Apple releases new builds for all its apps and services with yearly OS updates. While we applaud Safari improvements on Mac, the burning question remains the same: is it good enough to prevent users from switching to Chrome? How does it compare to everyone’s favorite web browser out there? Read our comparison post before you change the default browser on your Mac , iPhone, or iPad.

Google Chrome vs Microsoft Edge: Which browser is better?

Cross-platform availability.

Before we pit Safari against Chrome, let’s check their cross-platform availability first. After all, you won’t want to leave your web bookmarks, history, quick links, and other preferences behind when you switch to another platform.

As expected, alternating is a breeze with Chrome, since the browser is available on most smart platforms you can think of. Whether you use Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android, or ChromeOS, you are ready to surf the web with all of your personal data and a familiar interface. In contrast, Apple’s walled garden approach has limited Safari’s availability to the company’s devices only.

User interface and theme

Being the first-party app on macOS, Apple has nailed the esthetics of Safari. Let’s start with the homepage. It carries all the essential elements you need when you fire up the browser. You can check your favorites, recently closed tabs, reading list, privacy report, Siri suggestions, and even apply minimal wallpaper to the background. If it’s too busy for you, customize the entire homepage from the bottom menu. Overall, it’s not as busy as Microsoft Edge and doesn’t look as bland as Chrome’s homepage. Safari also offers a cool translucent effect at the top when you scroll through webpages. Unlike Chrome, there is no theme store to change the look and feel with a single click.

Google Chrome recently received a neat Material You makeover on the web. While Material You on Chrome matches the rest of Google services, it does look slightly out of place with other Mac apps.

Tab management

Do you often have dozens of tabs open during long research sessions? Managing and switching between them can be cumbersome after a while. Here’s where Chrome and Safari’s tab groups come into play, where you can organize relevant tabs under different groups. Safari does have a couple of additional tricks up its sleeve though.

When you create several tab groups on Safari, you can check the entire list from the vertical sidebar. Safari also lets you create different profiles to keep your browsing data separate, such as tabs, history, cookies and website data.

You can assign a different symbol, color, and separate extension list for Work, School, or Personal profiles. There is also an option to share a tab group with your iMessage contacts.

Chrome vs. Safari: Features

Let’s compare Safari and Chrome based on extension support, reading mode, and other novelty features.

Reading mode

Apple offers a seamless reading mode on Safari that you can customize with different backgrounds, fonts, and sizes. In comparison, Chrome’s reader mode leaves a lot to be desired. It opens the article in a sidebar and doesn’t necessarily hide all the distracting elements. Safari wins hands down here.

While Safari covers the essential extensions from top VPNs, password managers, and other third-party developers like Grammarly, Pocket, Raindrop, and Notion, the overall collection is still slim compared to Google Chrome.

If your workflow depends on dozens of extensions, think twice before switching from Chrome to Safari.

Seamless sharing

Shared with You is a niche Safari feature that is tightly backed in iMessage. Links shared with you in the Messages app automatically appear in the Share with You section in Safari. It is only useful for those who frequently exchange weblinks in iMessage conversations.

Instant conversion and translation

Both Safari and Chrome support instant currency conversion and basic math equations. For example, you can quickly get a final number when you type $1000 to INR or 45*3 in the address bar. Chrome goes a step further with Google Translate integration - you can simply type Hello in French and get results instantly.

Chrome vs. Safari: Password management

Both browsers offer basic password management to save your login credentials. Safari uses iCloud Passwords that can sync with all your devices. It supports autofill, Passkeys, verification codes, notes, and more.

Google Password Manager also supports notes and checkup. Like security recommendations on Safari, Chrome Password Manager’s checkup tool shows your leaked, reused, and weak passwords.

Privacy and security

The built-in standard protection on Chrome warns you of harmful files, extensions, and corrupt sites. Safari is a step ahead with iCloud Private Relay. It’s a privacy add-on for Apple One and iCloud+ subscribers to hide your IP address from websites you visit. The option is enabled by default and works silently in the background. When you visit a website in Safari, no one, including Apple, can see who you are or which sites you are visiting. It’s not as extreme as a VPN connection and doesn’t break your browsing setup. You can check out our dedicated guide if you'd like to learn more about iCloud Private Relay .

Safari also offers a privacy report that shows the number of trackers it has blocked from profiling you in the last 30 days.

Performance

When it comes to performance, you won’t find any major differences between Chrome and Safari on a high-speed internet connection. However, if your Mac has a slow network connection, you may notice that Safari can load webpages faster than Chrome, something that Avast confirmed in their dedicated speed comparison for major browsers.

While we are on the topic of performance, we should also factor in compatibility. Since Google Chrome (built on Chromium) is the most popular web browser out there, developers test and optimize their offerings for it. You may run into performance issues with specific websites (like Photopea, a web-based Photoshop alternative) on Safari.

Memory usage

Safari is a relatively lightweight web browser compared to Chrome. This is expected, since Chrome has been infamous for high RAM usage. We opened a couple of identical tabs on Chrome and Safari and checked their memory usage from the Activity Monitor. We will let the screenshot below do the talking.

Mac users with 8GB of RAM will surely appreciate Safari’s approach to memory usage.

Chrome vs. Safari: Mobile experience

Both Apple and Google have done a solid job with their iOS apps. They use a bottom bar with all the essential options. You can also use Chrome password manager as the default method to autofill login info. Chrome’s default Discover menu with news articles may irritate some users. Interestingly, Google has done a better job than Apple when it comes to widgets, as Chrome offers more widget options than Safari. Most notably, Chrome offers lock screen widgets which are missing from Safari.

Browse the web in style

Are you still unsure about the pros and cons of Chrome and Safari? Allow us to simplify the situation. Safari shines with better UI, low memory usage, and integration with other Apple apps. Chrome strikes back with cross-platform availability, rich extension support, and Google Translate integration. If you notice performance glitches while browsing the web, check CPU usage on Mac .

iOS 18 May Feature All-New 'Safari Browsing Assistant'

iOS 18 will apparently feature a new Safari browsing assistant, according to backend code on Apple's servers discovered by Nicolás Álvarez . MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris confirmed that the code exists, but not many details are known at this time.

iOS 18 WWDC 24 Feature 2

Update: Álvarez has since said that iCloud Private Relay might not be related to this feature.

A browsing assistant in Safari could be one of the many new generative AI features that are rumored to be coming to the iPhone with iOS 18 later this year. There are already multiple iPhone web browsers with AI tools, such as Microsoft Edge with a GPT-4-powered Copilot and Arc Search , which can summarize web pages to provide concise information.

Álvarez also uncovered a so-called "Encrypted Visual Search" feature in the backend code on Apple's servers, but no specific details are known. MacRumors contributor Steve Moser last year discovered a new Visual Search feature for Apple's Vision Pro headset in visionOS beta code, which would allow users to copy and paste printed text from the real world into apps and more, but the feature has yet to launch. It is possible that Apple is planning to debut a more secure version of the feature. However, the code could also relate to the iPhone's existing Visual Look Up feature that can identify objects in photos and videos.

Apple is set to unveil iOS 18 during its WWDC keynote on June 10 , so we should learn more about these potential new features in a few more months.

Rockville teen denied bond, Planned to commit school shooting

By Stephon Dingle

Updated on: April 19, 2024 / 8:04 PM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE -- An 18-year-old Montgomery County teen was denied bond at a court hearing today, after he was charged with what police describe as plans to commit a school shooting at a high school.

Police say the potential tragedy was avoided because someone spoke up.

A friend of the 18-year-old suspect was given access to a 129-page novel that detailed his plan to carry out what authorities describe as mass violence at Wootton High School, but it was the specific details of that plan that has the suspect facing up to ten years in prison.

"While this incident was thwarted, it serves as a reminder that we should remain vigilant and proactive in preventing acts of violence," Chief Marcus Jones, Montgomery County Police, said.

That vigilance is what prompted a phone call to Baltimore County Police, by a friend of 18-year-old suspect, Alex Ye. Court documents reveal the meticulous plan he had to shoot up Wootton High School in Rockville, which prompted a visit to his home by the FBI.

During a press conference Chief Marcus Jones said he, "Spoke to the father of Ye and was denied entry and not allowed to search the residence or interview the subject."

Shortly after that visit to his home, police say the suspect google searched gun ranges near him as well as AR-15's. After getting a search warrant, authorities combed through the suspect's google account, cell phone, iPad, and computer. It was there they found the 129-page book he wrote describing his plan.

"Ye talks about targeting his former elementary school because little kids make easier targets. He strategized on how to access the easiest classrooms in his high school and how he would be able to sneak a gun into the school," Chief Jones said.

Police also uncovered a troubling search history on the social media app, Discord, and Google. Before his arrest Ye was hospitalized and counselors made disturbing observations of Ye's fixation on school shootings which they reported to authorities.

"Even after being removed from the school, Ye said he could do something at graduation because he lived close to the school," Jones said.

But thanks to that friend and collaboration from different levels of law enforcement, another shooting tragedy was avoided, which the Montgomery County Executive says is an example of why speaking up is important as well as tough gun laws here in Maryland.

"You know people always like to think about what difference does it make, this could very well be a case where the difficulty to get guns prevented him from getting a gun when he wanted it and possibly prevented him from acting when he preferred to act." Marc Elrich, Montgomery County Executive, said.

The suspect was denied bond Friday and will remain in jail until his next court hearing. He faces up to ten years in prison if convicted.
