Happy Together 2023 Tour Begins

The Turtles continue as the signature headliners, but with the voice of the Archies, Ron Dante , again joining Turtles founding member and singer Mark Volman. (Fellow Turtles founder, Howard Kaylan, hasn’t participated for several years.)

The rest of the 2023 lineup: Gary Puckett , Little Anthony, the Vogues, the Classics IV and  The Cowsills . Together, they represent dozens of Top 10 radio hits. Watch them all perform in the opening night’s finale below.

The Turtles have sold over 40 million records worldwide. Their hits include: “Happy Together,” “She’d Rather Be With Me,” “Elenore,” “It Ain’t Me Babe” and “You Showed Me.”

Gary Puckett & the Union Gap enjoyed five Top 10 singles including their 1967 debut, “Woman Woman,” as well as “Young Girl” and “Lady Willpower.”

Little Anthony led the vocal group the Imperials to their first hit, “Tears On My Pillow,” in 1958, and followed it with such singles as “Goin’ Out of My Head” and “Hurt So Bad.”

The Vogues scored such Top 10 singles as “Turn Around, Look at Me,” “You’re the One” and “Five O’Clock World.”

The Classics IV scored three top 5 singles within two years, “Spooky,” “Stormy” and “Traces.” Their frontman, Dennis Yost, died in 2018.

The Cowsills have been part of the last several years of the tour. Bob, Paul and Susan Cowsill are a family singing group and the original inspiration for television’s  The Partridge Family  and are best known for the songs “The Rain, The Park and Other Things,” “Hair,” “Indian Lake” and “Love American Style.” They released a well-received studio album, Rhythm of the World , in 2022.

‘Happy Together Tour’ Caps Kool Deadwood Nites With A Performance At Deadwood Mountain Grand

DEADWOOD, S.D. (02/28/22) – Six bands that shaped the world of rock-n-roll in the 60’s and 70’s will make a return tour stop at Deadwood Mountain Grand on Sunday, August 28. The ‘Happy Together Tour – ‘2022’ featuring The Turtles, Chuck Negron formerly of Three Dog Night, Gary Puckett & the Union Gap, The Association, The Vogues and The Cowsills.

Very few rock performers have remained as vital through the 1960’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s as have Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman of The Turtles, featuring Flo & Eddie. Though many remember their 1967 hit, “Happy Together,” the Turtles were one of the more enjoyable American pop groups of the ’60s, moving from folk-rock inspired by the Byrds to a sparkling fusion of Zombies-inspired chamber pop and straight-ahead, good-time pop reminiscent of the Lovin’ Spoonful.

The band’s music was infused with beautiful vocal harmonies courtesy of dual front-men Kaylan and Volman. Though they hit number one in 1967 with the infectious “Happy Together,” the Turtles scored more hits throughout their career including “Elenor”, “You Showed Me”, “She’d Rather Be With Me”, “It Aint Me Babe,” and more.

Chuck Negron, formerly the voice of Three Dog Night, has been captivating audiences for over five decades with his iconic vocals, unique humor and brilliant storytelling. His catalog of hits are timeless and appeal to music fans of all ages. Negron was the voice behind such Three Dog Night hits such as “Joy To The World”, “Old Fashioned Love Song”, “One” and “Try A Little Tenderness” among others.

Gary Puckett and the Union Gap was one of the most successful musical groups of the sixties. Gary’s unmistakable signature voice garnered six consecutive gold records and top ten Billboard hits with the following titles:

“Young Girl”, “Woman Woman”, “Lady Willpower”, “Over You”, “This Girl Is A Woman Now”, “Keep The Customer Satisfied”, “Don’t Give In To Him” and “Home”.

Gary Puckett has performed on more than thirty network television shows and prime time specials during his career, even adding a command performance for the President and Prince Charles at the White House. The Union Gap disbanded in the seventies. In 1974, “Young Girl” was reissued in England where it received a silver record award for attaining a top five position on the pop charts, several years after its initial release.

In 1967, The Association made history being the first band anywhere to open a rock festival – the now historic, Monterey Pop Festival. One of the most successful bands to come out of the 60’s, they have sold millions of records, tapes, CDs and DVDs as well as earned a number of achievements including a Golden Globe nomination in 1970 for Best Original Song – ‘Goodbye Columbus’. The band has received 7 Grammy nominations including Rock & Roll Group Performance, Rock & Roll Recording and Vocal Group Performance for ‘Cherish’ as well as Contemporary Album for ‘Insight Out’, Contemporary Vocal Group for ‘Windy’ and Group Vocal Performance for ‘Never My Love’.

The Association has also received RIAA certifications for 6 gold and 3 platinum records. Their album, ‘The Association Greatest Hits’ (Warner Brothers) is now double platinum and continues to be one of the longest best-selling albums in the history of the company.

Harmony-pop vocal group the Vogues were formed in 1960 by lead baritone Bill Burkette, baritone Don Miller, first tenor Hugh Geyer, and second tenor Chuck Blasko, who were all high school friends from Turtle Creek, PA. Originally dubbed the Val-Aires, the foursome eventually signed to the tiny Co & Ce label, reaching the number four spot in the autumn of 1965 with “You’re the One”; The Vogues’ most memorable hit, the classic “Five O’Clock World,” cracked the Top Five before the year ended as well. Two more Top 40 entries, “Magic Town” and “The Land of Milk and Honey,” followed in 1966, and when the group resurfaced in 1968 with the Top Ten smash “Turn Around, Look at Me,” they had jumped to major label Reprise. The single, the Vogues’ lone million-seller, anticipated the lighter, more sophisticated approach of subsequent hits like “My Special Angel,” “Till,” and “No, Not Much.”

The real-life inspiration behind the hit television series The Partridge Family, the Cowsills — comprised of teen siblings Bill, Bob, Barry, John, Susan, and Paul in tandem with mother Barbara — were one of the biggest pop acts of the late ’60s, scoring a series of hits including “The Rain, the Park and Other Things” and “Hair” with their angelic harmonies and sun-kissed melodies.

“What a way to finish the Kool Deadwood Nites weekend than with six of the most famous rock and roll bands of the 60’s and 70’s,” said Susan Kightlinger, General Manager at Deadwood Mountain Grand. “This is going to be a show to remember.”

History of the Slime Plant

A new job for an old friend.

As long as anyone can remember, the Homestake Slime Plant has stood watch over Deadwood. Countless workers made a living here. Generations of children walked past it on their way to school. In recent decades, however, it was mostly been a sad relic of a bygone era. Deadwood Mountain Grand, with its restaurant, casino, hotel and entertainment venue, brings an exciting new role for Deadwood’s old friend.

The Evolution of Black Hills Mining

In 1876, Deadwood Gulch mining was simple: Wash the gold dust and nuggets from the gravel creek beds. But those workings played out quickly, and sophisticated hard-rock mining became necessary.

Finding a place in Deadwood’s new economy

The Homestake Slime Plant continued to serve Homestake Mining Co. until 1973. By then, changes in the process made it more efficient and environmentally cleaner to process ore near the mineshaft in Lead. After the plant shut down, Lawrence County turned part of the building into a heavy-equipment maintenance shop. It served as a county shop for a number of years.

Deadwood’s Second Gold Rush

Deadwood’s economy took a dramatic turn in 1989, when small-stakes gaming became legal in Deadwood. Old storefronts, vacant warehouses and historic buildings up and down Main Street became casinos, restaurants and hotels. Yet the Slime Plant stood mostly idle. Historic preservationists and Deadwood officials tried for years to find the right adaptive reuse for this old mining-era structure in Deadwood’s new gaming-era economy. Ever since 1989, officials knew a large-scale entertainment venue would make Deadwood a tourism showcase.

Preserving the Black Hills’ Mining Heritage

The two needs – historic preservation and entertainment – converged when Deadwood Mountain Grand’s partners stepped forward. The city’s Historic Preservation Commission funded the façade restoration, and helped the partners ensure that Deadwood’s historic mining heritage is honored and preserved.

Deadwood, South Dakota. Est. 1876

Once known as the wildest and woolliest town in the West, Deadwood is decidedly friendlier today than it was in its 1870s heyday. Founded two years after the discovery of gold during the 1874 Custer Expedition, Deadwood is anything but dead today. In fact, in the past two decades, more than $220 million has been invested in this quaint Victorian town tucked in a gold-filled gulch, making Deadwood one of the largest ongoing historic preservation projects in the nation.

The action in Deadwood drew the likes of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. Wild Bill’s stay, however, was short. He was shot in the head while playing poker at the Saloon No. 10. He died holding two pair aces and eights, forever known as the Dead Man’s Hand.

Contemporary visitors discover brick-lined streets, period trolleys and lighting, intriguing museums and Main Street shootouts by Wild West re-enactors. When coupled with a year-round slate of special events and free outdoor concerts, parades and rodeo performances, Deadwood is still the best bet for your vacation dollar.
