Accidentally closed all Safari tabs, possible to restore?

I use iPhone 13 Pro for research and tend to have a lot of tabs open. Now I accidentally hit "close all tabs". With

"recently closed tabs" I could restore but I had 112 tabs open

Is there a way to get the tabs back? And is there a way to undo the "close all tabs" if possible

Disappearing Safari Tabs on iPhone or iPad? How to Find Them

Every so often, a seemingly small bug in Apple's operating systems survives the company's annual OS launches and continues to cause users huge frustration from one software update to the next.

While there isn't an accepted solution to the problem of disappearing tabs, there are cases where it might seem that your tabs are gone, when in fact they are just hidden from view. Here are some ways that you may be able to get them back or stop them from disappearing in the first place.

Reveal Hidden Tabs

On iPadOS, for example, if you press and hold the Show Tab Overview button (four squares in a quadrant) in the top-right corner of the Safari window, this will reveal a dropdown menu that includes an option to Merge All Windows .

Reveal the Shelf

Another action worth trying on iPadOS is pressing and holding the Safari icon in the Dock or on the Home Screen and selecting Show All Windows from the popup menu that appears.

Recently Closed Tabs

If you have an inkling that some of the tabs you're missing have been inadvertently closed, you can always use the Recently Closed Tabs option to re-open them. All you have to do is open up the tab view in Safari and long press on the "+" icon to get a look at all of the tabs that you've recently closed.

Turn Off Auto-Close Tabs

If you still haven't been able to find some of your tabs, make sure that Safari isn't closing them after a certain duration on your behalf: Open Settings , tap through to Safari -> Close Tabs and ensure that Manually is selected.

A popup menu will appear at the on the screen from which you can select Add Bookmarks for X Tabs , the X being the number of tabs open.

Once you've tapped this option, you'll be asked to save the tabs in a new bookmarks folder (remember to give it a recognizable name). Alternately, you can choose a location from the existing folder list in which to save the tabs.

To access your bookmarks in Safari at any time, simply tap the Bookmarks icon in the main browsing interface or the sidebar to reveal all of your saved favorites and folders. Press and hold on the folder of bookmarks and select Open in New Tabs , or alternatively, Open in Tab Group if you want them grouped.

Luckily, there are two simple ways to reopen closed tabs in Safari on your iPhone! We'll show you how.

How to Reopen a Closed Tab in Safari on iPhone

Another way to restore closed tabs is to go to the History tab in Safari. The History tab lists the recent and past pages that you've browsed. Here's how to reopen tabs from History.

If you currently have no tabs open, the steps are the same! You'll simply be starting from a blank page instead of a current tab. Safari can hold a fairly long list of recently closed tabs, so even if your child is playing around and deletes all open Safari tabs, you should be able to recover them quickly.

How to Restore Accidentally Closed Tabs on Your iPhone

Accidentally closing all of your tabs on your iPhone can be a major inconvenience, especially if you were in the middle of somthing important. Luckily, Apple has made it easy to recover any accidentally closed tabs on your iPhone.

The first thing you’ll want to do if you’ve accidentally closed all of your tabs is open up the tab view in Safari. To do this, simply tap the tab icon in the bottom right corner of your screen. Once you’re in the tab view, long press on the “+” icon and you’ll be able to access Recently Closed Tabs from the drop-down menu. This will show a list of all tabs that have been recently closed so you can choose which one to re-open.

Another way to regain access to recently closed tabs is to use Reopen Last Closed Tab or Reopen Last Closed Window from the History menu. You can find this option by opening Safari and tapping on the Bookmark icon at the bottom of your screen. Select History and then choose eiter Reopen Last Closed Tab or Reopen Last Closed Window.

Finally, if you need to restore multiple recently closed tabs at once, you can use Reopen All Windows from Last Session from witin the History menu as well. This will open up all windows that were open when your session was last terminated so that none of your work is lost.

Using these simple steps, recovering accidentally closed tabs on an iPhone shuld be a breeze!

Reopening Closed Tabs on iPhone

If you’ve accidentally closed all of your tabs in Safari on your iPhone, there’s no need to panic! You can easily get them back. All you have to do is open up the tab view in Safari and long press on the “+” icon. You’ll see an option labeled Recently Closed Tabs whre you can view and select any tabs that were recently closed. Just select the ones that you want to reopen, and they will be restored. If needed, you can also use this option to restore tabs that have been closed for longer periods of time, as it will keep a record of all recently closed tabs until they are manually cleared.

Disappearance of Tabs on iPhone

It is possible that all of your tabs disappeared from your iPhone because you may have inadvertently closed them all at once. This can happen if you press and hold the “+” icon in the tab view and select “Close All Tabs”. Alternatively, it could be due to a power outage, software update, or system crash. If this is the case, then you can view recently closed tabs in Safari by long-pressing the “+” icon and selecting “Recently Closed Tabs”, from which you can re-open windows.

Restoring Safari Tabs

To restore Safari tabs, open the Safari app on your Mac and choose History > Recently Closed. This will display a list of recently closed tabs, allowing you to select and reopen any of them. You can also choose History > Reopen Last Closed Tab or History > Reopen Last Closed Window to reopen the last tab or window you closed, or Reopen All Windows from Last Session to restore your entire Safari session from the last time it was opened.

Retrieving Open Tabs After Clearing History on iPhone

Yes, you can get back open tabs after clearing your history on your iPhone. If you have Safari toggled on under Settings > [your name] > iCloud, the best way to restore the open tabs is to restore a previous backup. This will allow you to access the data that was saved when you created the backup. If the restored version contains more than you were expecting, or if you don’t have access to another backup, then it may be necessary to try restoring a different version of your data.

What Happened to My Open Tabs on My iPhone?

Additionally, if you have recently updated your OS or Safari version, this could have reset the preferences which could have caused all open tabs to be deleted.

Restoring Multiple Tabs in Safari

To restore multiple tabs in Safari, open the Safari menu and select Reopen All Windows from Last Session. This will load all the tabs that were open when you last quit Safari. Alternatively, you can also press Command+Shift+T to reopen the last closed tab or press Command+Shift+Option+T to reopen all the tabs that were closed snce you launched Safari.

Restoring Safari Tabs from an iPhone Backup

Yes, iPhone backups will restore Safari tabs if the backup was made with encrypted backups enabled. This means that all of your browsing history including Safari tabs will be backed up and restored when you restore from a backup. It is important to note that this only applies to encrypted backups, so make sure to turn on encrypted backups in the Settings app before creating a backup.

If you’ve accidentally closed tons of Safari tabs on iPad or iPhone and want to restore them, or you lost all of your Safari tabs by trying to create a Safari Tab Group (a surprisingly common occurrence, what a feature bug), you are probably desperately wondering how you can recover and reopen all closed tabs in Safari and restore them all to your iPhone or iPad.

Many people use Safari tabs as an alternative to bookmarks, keeping hundreds of tabs open at a time, but forget to bookmark them. Endless hours of research, resources, etc, open in tabs, can all be gone in a flash if you encounter a hiccup with Safari on iPhone or iPad. Oops. Indeed, Safari is unforgiving on the iPad (or iPhone), and your tabs may be toast.

Worried you lost your Safari tabs on iPad? Not so fast!

There’s good news and bad news.

While there’s no official “Reopen all closed tabs” option or ‘Restore previous session’ in Safari on iPadOS or iOS, you’re not out of options.

The bad news is that if you had tons of open tabs, say 300, 400, or 500 open tabs, they might be lost for good, or at least many of them may be gone.

But the good news is you can try to recover many of them through several different options. And if you have a keyboard hooked up to the iPad in particular, you’ll be able to get quite a few of the lost tabs back.

Restoring Closed Safari Tabs on iPad with Keyboard Shortcut

If you have an external keyboard, Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard, or similar keyboard with the iPad, you can use a keyboard shortcut in Safari to restore the last closed Safari tabs.

• Hit Command + Shift + T on a keyboard repeatedly, until all tabs have been reopened

I have personally experienced catastrophic tab loss due to the Tab Groups bug, but by using the Command Shift T method I was able to recover about 200 of 500 lost Safari tabs. This is probably the most broadly useful trick, and the closest method to restoring all closed tabs in Safari on iPad.

Unfortunately, this trick is probably not available for iPhone, but you can try connecting a bluetooth keyboard to iPhone and giving it a shot anyway – let us know if it works.

Recovering Closed Tabs in Safari on iPad via New Tab Button

The plus button in Safari on iPad and iPhone is the traditional commonly used method used to recover closed tabs in iOS Safari and iPadOS too.

• On iPad: Tap and hold on the + plus button, then select the closed tabs you wish to reopen from the drop-down menu
• On iPhone: Tap the two overlapping squares icon to access tabs view, then tap and hold on the + plus button to select closed tabs you want to reopen

The + tab drop down menu that shows with a long press will reveal all tabs that have been closed recently, so repeat this process to reopen and recover closed tabs as needed.

Restoring Lost Tabs in Safari on iPad through History

You can also browse through Safari history to restore closed tabs, though if you have tons of tabs you are trying to restore you’ll be in the history menu for a while.

• Tap the sidebar menu button, then tap on “History”
• Tap on the history item(s) you want to restore the tab for

This is fairly tedious but it can be very effective if you don’t mind putting the time into restoring from browser history.

Of course if you deleted and cleared the browser history, this won’t be an option.

Restore from a Recent Backup to Recover All Lost Safari Tabs?

If your tabs were super important, perhaps you were doing tons of research and lost them all, and if you had a recent backup made from before you lost the tabs, you can also try to restore the iPad from the backup to recover those lost tabs.

However this usually does not work to recover the tabs if Safari is syncing through iCloud Tabs, so if you’re in that situation you’ll want to use the approaches above rather than the backup recovery approach.

[cmd]-[shift]-T doesn’t work on german installed macbook –> opens the [sharing] menu

This article is aimed at iPad users with a keyboard case or external keyboard attached, however, for Mac; Command+Shift+Tab in Safari for Mac (US English) will reopen the last closed tab. You can see what the equivalent would be on Mac (German) by going to the Safari “History” menu and looking for the “Reopen Last Closed Tab” option to see the associated keystroke. Hope that helps!

• The first step is to open the Safari browser . You got this!
• Next, look at the bottom-right corner of your screen . You’ll see a little icon that looks like two squares on top of each other. That’s the “ Show All Tabs ” button. Please go on tap it.
• Now, see the “+” icon down there. That’s usually the button you tap to start a new tab. But today, we’re mixing things up. Press and hold that “+” for a couple of seconds.
• Then, A list will pop up, showing you all the tabs you’ve recently closed. Tap the one you want, and it’ll return to your active Safari tabs.

How to restore closed Safari tabs from search history

If you’re having trouble getting your Safari tabs back, no worries! You can always dig through your browsing history and open it up again one by one. Remember, this won’t work if you use Private mode because Safari doesn’t save that history.

To find those lost tabs, check out your history list or use the search function to find the websites you were on. Then you can reopen them from there-

• First off, open Safari and look for the Bookmark icon (it looks like an opened book). Tap on it.
• Next, hit the Clock It is where your browsing history lives.
• Now, you can search for that specific tab you closed or scroll through your history. It’s all listed in chronological order.
• Found it? Great! Tap on it, and it’ll open up in a new tab.

How to use the keyboard shortcuts or menu shortcuts to restore Safari tabs

Safari 101 : How to Clear Your Recently Closed Tabs List

When you accidentally close out of an important tab on your iPhone, Safari 's " Recently Closed Tabs " list really comes in handy. However, when it comes time to clear the list, things get a bit complicated. There's no "Delete" or "Erase" button on this page, but don't let that fool you — there are three easy ways to clear your recently closed tabs list.

Keep in mind that these steps will clear your list, so it will be irreversible. You need to make sure no tabs in the pile are important because once you go through with it, you won't be able to open that tab again. At least, not without having to do some history-diving in order to find it again.

And if you're wanting to clear your list of "Recently Closed Tabs" because of privacy issues where you don't want someone else with access to the iPhone to see what you've been reading, then you should consider using "Private" tabs more often, which won't get recorded in your list of "Recently Closed Tabs" anyway. More importantly, they won't appear in your browsing history.

Method 1: Force-Close the Safari App

Safari does not appear to have a limit to the number of closed tabs it will remember. That's pretty darn convenient, but it will forget them all if you force-close the app, which is the easiest way to clear the list.

Simply double-click the Home button, then swipe up on the Safari card to quit the app. On an iPhone X, you'd slowly swipe up from the home bar, hold for a moment, then let go to see all the app cards. Next, tap and hold on any card to bring up the close options, then tap the red minus button or swipe up to exit the app.

Method 2: Restart Your iPhone

If force-closing apps isn't your forte, maybe restarting is. If you have an iPhone X, hold the Side button plus one of the volume buttons for a few seconds. For all other iPhones, just hold down the Side button.

When you see "Slide to Power Off" appear on the display, swipe that bar to power down your iPhone. Once powered down completely, hold down the Side button for a few seconds until you see the Apple logo. When you're iPhone wakes up, your recently closed tabs list will be cleared.

Alternatively, you could also use the newer "Shut Down" command in iOS 11 to shut down your iPhone before you power it back on manually. Even better, you can just "Restart" your iPhone from the "Assistive Touch" menu so that it turns off and powers back on automatically.

Method 3: Clear Your Search History

Clearing your history not only covers your web-browsing tracks, it also purges your list of recently closed tabs.

To clear your history in Safari, tap the book icon in the bottom menu bar. If you don't see the bar, either tap on the top bar or swipe down on the page to make it appear. Then, tap the clock icon to access your History page.

Next, tap "Clear," then select any of the four time ranges offered. No matter which option you choose, each will erase all your recently closed tabs, regardless of when those tabs were actually closed.

Method 4: Just Wait It Out

While not very methodical, waiting will guarantee you lose all recently closed tabs. After a certain period of time, Safari flushes the list without your consent or knowledge. While the above steps are great for manually erasing your recently closed tabs list, know that your tabs do get erased periodically.

It's very difficult to test how long Safari takes in between deletions, and Apple does not appear to share the data publicly. However, from my experience, Safari will erase my recently closed tabs overnight, so these tabs must only be safe for a handful of hours. I guess it's called recently closed tabs for a reason.

If you have dozens of tabs open in Safari on iPhone or iPad and need to clear them out quickly, it can be tedious to "X" them out one at a time. Luckily, there are two ways to close all your Safari tabs at once, and they also work in Private Browsing mode. Here's how.

First, open "Safari" on your iPhone or iPad. While on any page, locate the tab switcher button, which looks like two overlapping squares. On the iPad, you'll find it in the upper-right corner of the screen.

On the iPhone, it's in the lower-right corner of the screen.

Place your finger on the tab switcher button and hold it there for a moment, preforming a "long press." In the menu that pops up, select "Close All Tabs." (There will be a number in the choice that lists the number of open tabs.)

When Safari asks you to confirm with another pop-up, tap "Close All Tabs" again. After that, all of your browser tabs will close.

There's another way to quickly close all tabs in Safari on iPhone and iPad. First, open "Safari," then tap the tab switcher button once.

On the tab switcher screen, locate the "Done" button, which is located in the upper-right corner of the screen on the iPad and in the lower-right corner of the screen on the iPhone.

Long-press the "Done" button — place and hold your finger there for a moment until a pop-up appears. In the pop-up, select "Close All Tabs." The exact name of the pop-up action will vary, depending on the number of tabs you have open.

Safari will ask you to confirm closing all the tabs with another pop-up message. Select "Close All Tabs" again. Then all of your Safari tabs will close instantly. The same action works in Private Browsing mode. Pretty handy!

If you accidentally closed all of your tabs and would like to get them back, you can retrieve them one at a time as long as you aren't in Private Browsing mode . Just tap the tab switcher button, then long-press the "+" button until a "Recently Closed Tabs" list appears . From there you can tap on entries in the list to open them again in Safari. Good luck!

It can be tedious to close each individual tab, but there's an easy shortcut to close all open tabs at once in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.

How to close all Safari tabs on iPhone

To close all your tabs in Safari, open up the browser; on the bottom bar in the right corner, you should see an icon that looks like two squares. That's the Tabs icon to let you easily switch between all your tabs. Press and hold on to the Tabs icon until a pop-up appears—one of the options on that list should say Close All [X] tabs. Tap on it and then tap Close All [X] tabs option that appears.

How to close all Chrome tabs on iPhone

To do so in Google Chrome, open up the app on your phone; tap the Tabs icon (it should look like a square) on the bottom toolbar. Then on the Tabs screen, select Edit in the bottom left corner, and choose Close All Tabs .

How to close all Firefox tabs on iPhone

For Firefox, open up the app and select the square Tabs icon. Your open Tabs should appear on the screen; on the bottom left of this screen, you should see a trash can icon. Press and hold on to the trash can icon and tap Close All Tabs .
