Opeth is a heavy metal band that formed in 1990. The group incorporates progressive, folk, blues, classical and jazz influences into their heavy metal music. They formed in Stockholm, Sweden.

The group are mainly known for using black metal and death metal with their usually long compositions, more so in their early work.

The band is made up of Mikael Åkerfeldt, Martín Méndez, Martin Axenrot, Fredrik Åkesson, Joakim Svalberg. The group has been through a lot of changes throughout the years, but guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt has always been the main member of Opeth and stayed with it throughout its career.

Opeth has released over ten studio albums, live albums and several live DVD's during their career. They first released their debut album in 1995 called "Orchid".

The band achieved their biggest commercial success in 2008 with their ninth album called "Watershed" which made 23 on the Billboard 200. However, their previous album "Ghost Reveries" had become popular prior to this.

Opeth have sold over 1.5 million albums and DVDs internationally, as well as 300,000 collective sound scans of their albums in the US.

Mikael Åkerfeldt (the songwriter, singer and guitarist), said he was influenced from a young age by acts such as Iron Maiden, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. Ryan Ogle from Blabbermouth depicted Opeth's distinct sound as incorporating "the likes of folk, funk, blues, 1970's rock, goth and a laundry list of other sonic oddities".

Live reviews

Progressive black metal, anyone? Opeth are probably your safest bet, with almost twenty-five years in the business; they blend a traditional black metal sound, if there’s such a thing, with genuine experimentation; elements of jazz, folk and classical have all been discernible over the course of ten studio records to date, and anybody doubting their propensity for the latter should probably know that their most noteworthy UK show to date came when they sold out the Royal Albert Hall - a gig that was filmed and released on DVD.

A neat feature of that show was that the band played their then-latest record, Blackwater Park, as the set’s first act, before returning to the stage to please the purists by performing - in chronological order - one song from every Opeth record to date. That’s the kind of career-spanning fare you should expect at one of their gigs, alongside furiously complex musicianship and sprawling sets that tend to clock in at around two hours. With their next record, Pale Communion, out in August, the Swedes have lined up a slew of UK dates for October; as one of the most technically gifted metal bands on the circuit, they remain one of their genre’s most intriguing propositions.

It was another excellent performance by Opeth. It was my 3rd time seeing them and I got to see them in the same place that they recorded a live DVD a few years back. Someone would say they would feel comfortable and "like home" but they started rather cold. After a few songs though they showed their musicianship in every possible level. They covered songs nearly throughout their whole discography (not an easy task to do) with nearly 2 hours of performance. The sound wasn't exquisite but then again Opeth is not an "easy" band to make 'em sound good. Everyone seemed happy and the energy was most of the time at a high level. Michael is a talented and natural performer and with a great sense of humour even between the songs he would do his usual jokes or say the usual bitter things about other bands or random people. An Opeth gig is always a great way to come closer to the band as a whole and to Michael himself and this way you understand better why they are who they are and how they've managed to be there, so high in the "food chain". Money well spent I say!

A dream of a night and show. All the guys were a class act and gracious with their time.

Had time to chat with each band member for a bit before the show. Talked to Mikael about their latest album being recorded at the same studio where Rush recorded A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres. Surreal.

Another high energy show - the Dallas crowd sang out the lyrics and melodies loud enough to be heard over the band who were at full ear melt. Great set list, a few tunes from Sorceress which is a great album, but they dipped back into the catalog with tunes from Still Life, Blackwater Park, My Arms - Your Hearse, etc..

Typically excellent concert by these Swedish legends who have evolved from death metal to what I'd guess you'd call prog metal over the past 25 years. Last night's show, featuring Ghost Reveries in its entirety along with a set of old and newer songs, proved that even though Mikael may have taken the band in a new direction, they can still bring it all, including the growling death metal vocals. Mikael was in great form and the band was in tip-top shape, especially Axe on drums - just phenomenal to watch him go from pounding the drums like a machine to showing a light nuanced touch - usually several times in the span of one song!

I will see Opeth every time they come to town.

Opeth is always amazing live. I was a little hesitant for this tour as their latest album "Sorceress" was not my favorite, and this was the "Sorceress" tour. But Mikael Åkerfeldt assured us that "just because this is the Sorceress tour doesn't mean we'll play songs only from that album". And he wasn't kidding. They played songs across their whole discography. The whole band sounded amazing. The encore included some requests from the crowd that was very enjoyable to watch which concluded with Deliverance.

All in all a fantastic show led by some top tier musicians doing what they do best. I highly recommend seeing Opeth live if you have the chance.

First of all, thanks to Opeth I discovered Alcest, a rare combination of deep sound and sexy look. Opeth went on stage actually a bit earlier than scheduled. Mike presented themselves as Swedish people from Sweden, mentioned how nervous he was. I appreciate the picks. Opeth led the show to the high but not excessive level of energy and this is probably why the gig has fell a bit short of expectations. Nobody was thrown on stage, nobody was jammed under the barrier, no one was crying out in ecstasy. And special thanks to the venue - the entry procedure was incredibly fast, the crowd management behind the barrier was suspiciously nice and efficient.

There is only one band in the world that sounds even better live than on cd. And this band is the mighty Opeth. Every time I see them live I cannot believe my eyes how they manage to nail each and every note of the concert so perfectly. You know what you will get and they deliver. Michael's conversations with the audience are just priceless, only problem when you see them in Scandinavia: he will talk in Swedish. Do not go see Opeth life, unless you can live with the fact that every other concert you go see will not be half as good as the one you saw from Opeth.

I'm not a huge fan of Opeth, but I know some albums and already knew about their competence and music quality on stage. But the concert was so much better than I was expecting. Great set list, great music quality and great humor along the gig as well. It was a surprise to laugh so much during the concert because of the excellent interaction between band and audience. An unforgettable concert. I wish I could go to another one while I'm in the UK. Totally recommended.

Saw the at the Midland Theatre in Kansas City, 3/1/2020. Beautiful venue, pretty well attended this night. Graveyard opened and put on a terrific show. Opeth also played a great set. Not sure if it's just his humor, or if he was actually contemptful toward the crowd that came to see him, but I was put off by his words between songs. Stayed for the whole thing and enjoyed the music, nonetheless.

Opeth at the state theatre! Wow, what a venue, it was pretty amazing seeing a crowd of metal heads in such a venue.

Opeth are tight and the show is pretty slick. Lots of banter between Mikael and the crowd, some of it quite funny. That said, I didn't think the sound was particularly great, which was a bit disappointing. Bit of a mix of old and new content, and some messing around.

Opeth announce 30th anniversary tour, and you get to choose the setlist

Opeth's Evolution XXX 'By Request' tour will take place in October 2021

Opeth

Swedish prog metal titans Opeth will celebrate their 30th anniversary next year with a tour. The run of eight shows will kick off in Berlin on October 13 2021, and climax in Lisbon on October 25.

Keen to make the celebrations a little more involving than they might otherwise be, Opeth are asking that fans vote for the songs they'd like to hear. They'll be able to do so at the band's website at 9am UK time on Monday, the same time that tickets go on sale.

”So, we’re planning to celebrate a belated band-birthday, also known as BBB," says frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt. "How do we celebrate a thing like this, you ask? Well, we go to work.

"We are planning a very few select shows around the world in 2021 where you basically have the collective choice of picking the songs for the setlist. Since we'll be celebrating 30 years we would love to play a song from each album we’ve done. All 13 of them.

"If you can help us and pick your choice of one song per album from the list, and then we’ll simply play the songs with the most votes. It’s been done before, but not by us. I am reluctant and nervous, but also excited to see what songs you will choose. I can’t really believe we’ve been around for 30 years, but there you go.

"So please help us. And be gentle. The final setlist will have 13 songs. One from each album. Your call…"

Back in May Opeth were confirmed as the first headline act for next year's ArcTangent Festival . The event returns on August 19 - 21 at Fernhill Farm, Compton Martin, near Bristol. Tickets are on sale now .

Opeth, 2019-11-08, Munich

Opeth is a progressive metal band from Sweden that is influenced by many diverse musical styles ranging from 1970s progressive rock to death metal, Their recent releases have deviated from their traditional death metal-influenced style, with more emphasis on progressive elements. Frontman and vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt is also noted for utilizing both clean singing and death growls, often in the same song. Due to their unique blend of melodic and progressive elements, Opeth are often classified separately from more typical death metal acts. The name Opeth was taken from Wilbur Smith's novel Sunbird, and derived from Opet, a city of the moon named in the novel. Opeth announce 20th anniversary reissue of ‘Damnation’ and original video for “Windowpane”

opeth tour 2023 europe

To mark the 20th anniversary of Opeth’s ground-breaking 2003 album ‘Damnation’, a special vinyl re-issue project has been meticulously crafted to pay homage to a pivotal and trailblazing moment in the band’s illustrious history. Originally recorded in the serenity of Åkerfelt’s native Sweden, with additional production from Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson, the album acclaimed by fans and critics alike has since received a re-mix and master in 2015, pressed to vinyl on a double LP together with the dichotomous ‘Deliverance.’

You can order it here: https://opeth.lnk.to/Damnation20

This release marks the first time exclusive and deluxe vinyl pressings have been given to ‘Damnation’. A record that represents a paradigm shift in the band’s approach to composition, seeing them side-line their metal roots from the forefront of their arsenal. Instead replacing it with an additional insight into ambience, atmospherics, and progressive rock, this together with Åkerfeldts signature lyricality and musicianship creates a unique record of ethereal beauty and longing, and one which remains top of mind for many Opeth fans.

The band have also shared the original video for the opening track “Windowpane”: “Digitized from the original Music For Nations video tape sent to MTV in 2003, a long lost artefact of a much loved fan favourite from from the Damnation vaults… Windowpane, the lost tape!”

The 20th Anniversary versions sees the 2015 re-mix and remaster pressed to standard black vinyl, as well as being available on deluxe and limited colour finishes, and for the very first time available on an exclusive picture disc that highlights and reflects the album’s ethereal and bleak visual world.

Speaking on the release, the band’s lead vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt comments “Hello folks! Our old “partners in cryme” Music For Nations are planning a 20th-anniversary re-release of one of our odd records, this time ”Damnation”. We want our records available on vinyl at all times, and it turns out we can’t keep stock! Our vinyl editions are flying out. I’ve seen it with my own eyes when I helped out in a record shop during the pandemic. Some customers didn’t know they’re buying it from one of the people responsible for the music. Of course I went: ”Good record, good band!”. So before there’s any moaning about ”another reissue, another cash grab” I want to stress out that it really comes down to public demand. We’ll present Steven Wilson’s updated mix (first available in 2015 or thereabouts) on limited edition opaque and transparent vinyl as well as on a picture disc, which I believe is the first time ever (?). ”Damnation” is a special record, even if they’re all special to me. I remember hearing the first mix on headphones in a crummy hotel somewhere in the UK. I had trouble believing it was us, myself, Peter, Lopez, Mendez (as well as ol’ Steve on keys). It was completely different from anything we’d done up to that point, and quite frankly, since. Out of all of our records, I think this one is most suitable for the vinyl format due to the fact that it is not really cluttered with stuff. A pretty airy recording with 5 musicians and done on 2 inch tapes as well. It’s a record I’m immensely proud over and it also remains a fan-favourite I believe.”

Commenting further Steven Wilson adds “At the time I remember getting death threats from metal fans for “ruining” the band! As if it could be anyone’s intention but Mikael’s to do a record like that anyway. Damnation was when everyone understood that he was not going be trapped within the confines of any genre or label, and that the band’s importance and influence would be far reaching. Rightly so Damnation is now seen as a timeless masterpiece, and I’m very proud to have had my part in making it.”

PARADISE LOST To Embark On 'Embers Of Europe' Fall 2023 Tour With MY DYING BRIDE

British gothic metal pioneers PARADISE LOST will celebrate the 30th anniversary of their fourth album, "Icon" , by embarking on the "Embers Of Europe" tour in the fall. Support on the trek will come from MY DYING BRIDE .

So far the following shows have been announced:

Dec. 01 - Shepherds Bush Empire – London, UK Dec. 14 - St George's Hall – Bradford, UK

Tickets and "Icon" collectors' edition vinyl plus tickets bundles go on sale this Friday, June 2 at 10 a.m.

The tour announcement comes a little over a week after PARADISE LOST revealed it was re-recording "Icon" for a special new release. There will also be "an extra special vinyl" version of the album.

PARADISE LOST singer Nick Holmes says: "Our specific record deal around the time we signed for the 'Icon' album meant we would never actually own the rights to our music or artwork, so going forward, to reissue the album ourselves for the 30th anniversary, it was necessary to re-record and completely re-do the album cover.

"Re-recording 'Icon' has not only enabled us to release it as a series of collectors editions on vinyl but it was also great to revisit some songs from a lifetime ago. Nothing can replace those original recordings or ever will, they are a nostalgic part of all our lives but it has been a lot of fun revisiting those early MFN days once again, and I hope the end result displays that!"

"Icon" marked a departure from the death-doom sound of PARADISE LOST 's early work and was the last album to feature Matthew Archer on drums.

In February 2018, "Icon" was inducted into the Decibel "Hall Of Fame", with the magazine naming it influential to the development of the gothic metal subgenre.

Formed in Halifax, West Yorkshire, in 1988, PARADISE LOST were unlikely candidates for metal glory when they slithered from the shadows and infiltrated the U.K. underground. But not content with spawning an entire subgenre with early death/doom masterpiece "Gothic" nor with conquering the metal mainstream with the balls-out power of 1995's "Draconian Times" , they have subsequently traversed multiple genre boundaries with skill and grace, evolving through the pitch-black alt-rock mastery of 1990s classics "One Second" and "Host" to the muscular but ornate grandeur of 2009's "Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us" and "Tragic Idol" (2012),with the nonchalant finesse of grand masters. The band's "The Plague Within" (2015) and "Medusa" (2017) albums saw a much-celebrated return to brutal, old-school thinking, via two crushing monoliths to slow-motion death and spiritual defeat.

Two months ago, PARADISE LOST welcomed Guido Zima Montanarini as their official new drummer.

Last September, Finnish drummer Waltteri Väyrynen left PARADISE LOST to join OPETH . At the time, he issued a statement saying that his decision involved "absolutely no bad blood or drama whatsoever."

PARADISE LOST 's latest album, "Obsidian" , was released in May 2020 via Nuclear Blast .
