The small Hollywood Heritage Museum is housed in the former Lasky-DeMille Barn on Highland Avenue across from the Hollywood Bowl. The barn, built in 1895 on a citrus ranch on the corner of Selma and Vine, changed hands several times before becoming the base where, in 1914, Cecil B. DeMille and Jesse Lasky produced Hollywood's first feature film. The building was moved to the backlot at United Studios (now Paramount Studios) in 1926.

The barn was moved to its current location in 1983 and opened as the Hollywood Heritage Museum in 1985. Today, it houses an impressive archive of photos, props, and memorabilia from some of the earliest years of Hollywood filmmaking.

Heaven on earth for music lovers, Amoeba Music on Sunset Blvd wields the coveted title of being the largest independent record store in America.

Spanning three stories and housing more than a million records (with new stock arriving daily), it houses every genre under the sun and each section is curated with real passion.

41 – Dine at Yamashiro Hollywood

It’s hard to believe that you could be whisked away to Japan on your trip to LA, but sitting on Sycamore Avenue high in the Hollywood Hills is Yamashiro, a popular Japanese restaurant that, thanks to its charming architecture, atmosphere, and menu, does exactly that.

The beloved locale was modeled after a Kyoto palace — koi pond and all — and has been serving up sushi and other traditional dishes to the stars for over a century.

The views over LA are spectacular, but it’s not just about the food or vistas here; Yamashiro also offers a range of entertainment experiences, like DJs on its terrace and the Hollywood Night Market.

42 – Check out the obscure Psychiatry Museum

The Psychiatry: An Industry of Death Museum might not be the first thing that springs to mind when planning a trip to Tinseltown, but with exhibits shedding light on electric shock therapy), lobotomies, and other forms of psychiatric treatment and trauma, it’s certainly one of the most fascinating things to do in Hollywood.

Since the Museum is fully funded by the Church of Scientology, the displays do somewhat communicate an ideology, however, that doesn’t make them any less eye-opening.

43 – Step back in time at the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum

A non-negotiable for dinosaur lovers and budding archeologists, the family-favorite La Brea Tar Pits have been bubbling beneath Wilshire Boulevard for tens of thousands of years, with over 3.5 million fossils found to date and counting!

Curious visitors can witness live excavations, learn about wooly mammoths and sabertoothed tigers, and discover the ins and outs of the world’s only active, urban Ice Age excavation site!

With plenty of hands-on activities, it’s a regular hit with the youngsters.

44 – Check out the Capitol Records Building

Built in 1955 and meant to resemble a stack of records on a turntable, complete with the label’s logo emblazoned across its side, the iconic Capitol Records Building on Vine Street is one of Hollywood’s most recognized structures.

Having appeared in hundreds of blockbuster films over the years, the former record studio, while not open to the public, is still worth a quick peek, especially considering that the Beatles’ stars are located at its doorstep.

45 – Wander through the Hollywood Palladium for live music

The famous live venue tucked in the also famous Sunset Boulevard is the Hollywood Palladium , a music venue that has become famous with the times for being the stage for many artists known today, as well as hosting notable audience members like John F. Kennedy in 1961.

Though today’s music scene has moved a bit from its early jazz and Latin Music orchestra, today you can catch a rock show, rap and R&B performance, and a few pop musicians.

Be sure to check out their headlining calendar on their website, where you can also purchase tickets ahead of time for your desired show. Be aware that you can only purchase concert tickets on their website and not through LiveNation or Ticketmaster.

46 – Learn about decades gone by at the Hollywood Heritage Museum

Forming part of the Hollywood Bowl, it might not look like much from the outside (it sits in a restored barn, in fact) but delve deeper and you’ll find a fascinating peek into Tinseltown’s history at The Hollywood Heritage Museum .

Featuring everything from old scripts to costumes worn by silver screen stars over the years, it’s an all-around insight into how this iconic town in the hills got its name and developed into what it is today.

If you’re lucky, you might even stumble upon a book signing or special presentation.

47 – Taste a negroni at the historic Musso & Frank Grill

The oldest restaurant in Hollywood, this staple resto-bar has been serving up food and drink for over a century to visitors from near and far, and local legends of the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Aside from its history (currently run by 4th generation Mosso family), it’s recently found itself in the spotlight again after appearing in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood — so if you’re after a table, better get in early.

48 – Catch a Broadway show at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre

One of the city’s most iconic venues for all things center-stage, this historic theater has been drawing in audiences for more than a century, housing toe-tapping musicals, emotive plays, film screenings, and unforgettable concerts.

With a glorious interior and exterior, as well as an unbeatable view from its mezzanine level of the stage below, it’s no wonder this venue — built by infamous impresario Alexander Pantages — has been gracing Hollywood with all things theatre for over 90 years.

49 – Order a shake at Mel’s Drive-In on Sunset Boulevard

Another Hollywood star, Mel’s Drive-In on Sunset Boulevard sits along the famous boulevard and has been serving up classic Americana in a 50s-style setting (think red stools and giant silver milkshake holders) since 1997.

With a reputation for its burgers as well as other fast-food fixings like onion rings and enormous sundaes, this unapologetically retro diner is full of nostalgia.

Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, it’s perfect for some late-night grub after hitting up any of the Strip’s nightclubs.

50 – Marvel at the scandelous Chateau Marmont

Perhaps the most celebrated building in Hollywood, Chateau Marmont ‘s iconic seven-story French Gothic castle sits right on Sunset Boulevard and has been a playground for celebrities over recent decades.

The hotel, established in 1927, boasts a fairytale setting with a poolside garden and rooms overlooking Sunset Boulevard, as well as a private bungalow for guests to rent out — bungalows, which, have seen more than their fair share of scandalous antics and excitement over the years!

But if you’re not staying the night, it’s still worth stopping by for a drink at its rooftop bar where you can people-watch over Hollywood.

51 – Don’t get too spooked at the Museum of Death

An unusual but fascinating museum, the Museum of Death is dedicated to everything macabre, renowned for housing the largest collection of serial killer artwork on the planet.

Located on Hollywood Boulevard inside a foreboding Victorian-style house, it’s filled with eerie memorabilia ranging from crime scene photos and autopsy tools to investigation reports, weapons, and a whole lot more

It may not be for everyone (especially those who are squeamish) but it’s certainly worth a visit if you’re after something different from the typical tourist draws.

52 – Sit back for a summer show at the Hollywood Bowl

A Hollywood staple, this outdoor amphitheater has been hosting its take on summertime fun since 1922 and is still considered one of the 10 best live music venues in America to this day (if you ask RollingStone).

From classical symphonies to live musical performances and a whole lot more during the warmer months of spring and summer, it’s one of those local institutions where you can be sure to have a good time — especially if you’re going with a date!

53 – Watch for sleight of hand at Black Rabbit Rose Magic

Get a 360-degree view of Hollywood at the best rooftop in Los Angeles (according to many locals) at 1|0 Rooftop at The Godfrey . Serving perfect bar bites with exclusive drinks on the 7th floor of this hotel, enjoy the views from the pool or a lounge chair.

Grab an old-fashioned cocktail and other vintage drinks at Harriet’s Rooftop , for a taste of Old Hollywood, as you stare off into the beauty of the city as well as the Hollywood Hills.

18 Things to do in Hollywood

Hollywood, California is a huge tourist attraction that people come from all over the world to visit; however, it can be overwhelming since there is so much to see and do there. I have been exploring Los Angeles and Hollywood for years and put together some places that many first time visitors would want to see in the area. Check them out below and let me know what I left off in the comments.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

While in Hollywood, pretty much everyone goes to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It is worth seeing at least once with the stars in the ground and all of the lights from El Capitan Theater. It is not my favorite thing to do in Hollywood though, so I don’t get down there very often. That being said, the TCL Chinese Theater is worth the stop.

TCL Chinese Theater

TCL Chinese Theater is the famous Hollywood movie theater you have seen at many premieres. You can still see a movie here or take a tour of the theater to learn the history. For most people, the exterior with all of the hand and footprints in the ground is the main attraction, and it is a lot of fun to see the famous actors and movie characters (R2D2) cemented into the ground outside the theater.

Hollywood Museum

There are lots of museums near the Hollywood Walk of Fame, like the wax museum and Ripley’s Believe It or Not. My favorite is the Hollywood Museum though, since it is dedicated to the movies. There have been many great exhibits here, including one on the Batman TV show that I loved.

Amoeba Record Store (no longer here, moving to a new location)

I love record stores, and Amoeba is one I have been coming to for over a decade. The store is massive with so much to see and shop over the two floors. The highlight for me is always the used records, which are fun to sort through and look for hidden gems. There is free parking under the store as well, which is hard to find in Los Angeles.

Wacko Soap Plant

Hollywood has a few fun stores that I always enjoy, and the first of these is Wacko Soap Plant. Much like the popular Archie Mchpees in Seattle, this store has aisles of unique and crazy gifts and souvenirs. There is a large mask section in the back, all sorts of figurines, and tons of books. They even have a small art gallery back of the store as well.

Time Travel Mart

Time Travel Mart is another store that I love in Hollywood. It is a nonprofit that provides funding for an after-school program and does it in the most awesome way possible. The Time Travel Mart has gifts from throughout history and the future with everything from dinosaur eggs to robot oil on display. It is such a fun little store to walk around in, and its great that the purchases support a worthy cause as well.

Paramount Studio Tour

When in Hollywood, most people want to experience movie culture, and one of the best ways to do that is through a studio tour. There are four tours, Sony, Paramount, Universal and Warner Brothers. They are a little pricey, but it is a cool experience where you can explore old sets, see props, and learn about the movie-making process. If this is something you want to know more about while in Hollywood, then definitely do a studio tour.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Hollywood Forever Cemetery is the place where many stars have been buried over the years, and it has become a popular destination for tourists. Some of the most famous gravesites are those for Johnny Ramone, Cecil B. DeMille, and Mel Blanc.

Runyon Canyon

Runyon Canyon is where people who live in Hollywood get out and stretch their legs. I avoided it for a long time as I figured it would not be a great hike, but I really enjoyed it when I went. It is an excellent spot in the city to watch the sunset, and some of the steep hills will get your blood pumping.

Griffith Observatory

Griffith Observatory is probably my favorite place in Hollywood. It is free to visit, other than parking, and it has incredible views of downtown Hollywood and the Hollywood Sign. The observatory has many exciting exhibits to see, with my favorite being the Tesla Coil, and you can easily spend a few hours here. Do note it gets crazy busy on the weekends.

Mt Hollywood

While at Griffith Observatory, consider hiking up to Mt Hollywood. Often confused with the hill that the Hollywood Sign is on (Mt Lee), this mountain is actually behind Griffith Observatory and gives you great views down on LA and the observatory. I have watched sunset here many times, and I always enjoy going back.

Mt Lee / Hollywood Sign

If you are looking to get as close to the Hollywood Sign as possible, then you will want to take the hike up to Mt Lee. This is where the Hollywood Sign actually is. There are many ways to hike there, but my favorite is via the Wisdom Tree Trail. While you can’t get super close to the letters, it is incredible to be able to see them from a vantage point like this and its a must do in Hollywood for me.

Farmers Market / The Grove

The old and permanent LA Farmers Market has been a favorite spot for decades. While it is showing its age, it is still a lot of fun to walk up and down the different vendors and grab some food. Of course, the main reason I go is for Bob’s Donuts, which are always excellent. The Farmers Market is right next to The Grove as well, which is a trendy mall if you want to do some shopping.

LA County Museum of Art

LACMA is my favorite museum in the Hollywood area. This museum is massive, with all sorts of unique exhibits and sculptures. You can easily spend a half day exploring the museum and still not see everything. Even if you don’t have time to go in the museum, it is still worth going just to see the outdoor installations like the large rock known as Levitated Mass and Urban Lights, which is one of the most popular photos spots in Hollywood.

La Brea Tar Pits

Right next to LACMA is the La Brea Tar Pits that are great to visit after the museum. The tar pits are a well-maintained part of the area’s history, and they are continually taking out new dinosaur bones from the many dig sites. The large tar area in the front shows what it would have been like back in the day, complete with mammoth sculptures stuck in the tar. If you sit there for a few minutes, you can even see the tar bubbling. Be sure to go into the museum as well where you can see all sorts of dinosaur bones they have taken from the tar.

Comedy Club

If you are staying in Hollywood, then be sure to catch a comedy show. There are many popular spots for this, with the Comedy Store being the most famous. It’s a fun Hollywood experience, and you never know who might stop by for a surprise set. I once went to a show, and Louis C.K. came out to do a surprise set and test new material, so you never know who will show up.

Take a stroll down Hollywood Boulevard and take in the sights and sounds of the bustling city.

You can take a selfie with your favorite star, visit the iconic Chinese Theater, or just people watch and take in the atmosphere.

Things To Do In Hollywood

1. get up close and personal with celebrities on the hollywood walk of fame.

The famous sidewalk stars celebrating all of the showbiz’s biggest stars can be found along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street.

They are  divided into five categories: Motion Pictures, Live Performance/Theater, Recording radio, and television . They are distributed in two parallel rows for each sidewalk.

Some are dedicated to fictional characters such as Godzilla and Mickey Mouse, others to famous animals such as Lassie, and some stars have more than one star because they have shined in different categories.

Today, the Walk of Fame has  more than 2,500 famous stars  stamped on the ground and with free access.

Therefore, searching for the star of a favorite artist is one of the must-do activities to do in Hollywood.

Each star is inscribed in brass with the honoree’s name engraved in bronze, and below is a round emblem indicating the category for which that person was awarded the star.

And if you are a big fan of an artist, look on the  official website for the exact location of that person’s star .

That way, you won’t waste much time looking for where it is among many others.

But if you don’t have a favorite, the best thing is to walk with your eyes fixed on the ground and let yourself be surprised by the encounters of the big names of the past, dodging the dozens of people sitting or slumped down to take a picture.

This place is also a good spot to buy souvenirs. However, be aware that near the Chinese Theater and Dolby Theater, prices can be more expensive.

Walk a few blocks, and you will see that the prices charged are lower.

All in all, the Hollywood Walk of Fame is one of the best-known sights in Hollywood.

So walking down this street is an almost obligatory stop for anyone going to the city.

2. See The Hollywood Sign On The Hill

The Hollywood Sign is probably one of the most famous tourist spots in Hollywood and one of the most characteristic postcards of the city.

It  is situated on Mount Lee Hill  and features  huge 13.7-meter-high letters  spelling out the word Hollywood.

So if you go to Los Angeles and don’t take a picture of the Hollywood sign, it means you haven’t been there.

It is possible to see this sign from several points in Hollywood, but there are some places where the photos come out better, especially if you are a photography fanatic like me.

One of the best places to take panoramic photos of the Hollywood sign is the  Griffith Observatory .

This beautiful park is free to enter, with numerous trails and viewpoints from where you can enjoy some of the best sunset views in Los Angeles. 

Another good place to take photos of the Hollywood sign is  Lake Hollywood Park , a beautiful park with large expanses of grass and privileged visits to the famous sign, where you can also take a walk or have a picnic.

3. Explore Celebrities Home Through Beverly Hills

Who has never heard of “ The preppy girls of Beverly Hills “?! Don’t worry if you’ve never heard of this series.

But I’m sure you’ve already seen the movie “ Pretty Woman .” In short, Beverly Hills became famous after being the setting for several films and series, in addition to being the home of several Hollywood celebrities.

So a visit there is one of the best things to do in Hollywood.

Beverly Hills is all luxury and glamour. It is there that we find  Rodeo Drive , one of the most chic shopping streets in the world, made up of dozens of very expensive designer stores, including Hermes, Dior, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, and Tiffany.

The Beverly Hills Wilshire Hotel,  where “Pretty Woman” was recorded, is at the end of Rodeo Drive, almost opposite the staircase with the fountain that everyone photographs.

You can also tour the homes of famous people like Michael Jackson (the last house he lived in), Paris Hilton, Charlie Chaplin, Walt Disney, Jennifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, Nicolas Cage, and many others.

It is possible to take a guided tour, or you can go on your own if you have rented a car (which is the best way to make the most of everything the city has to offer).

If you prefer to go on your own, you can buy a map on Sunset Blv or find them on the internet.

4. Catch A Movie At TCL Chinese Theatre

Built in 1927  in the shape of a Chinese pagoda, the Chinese Theater is mainly  famous for the hand and footprints of Hollywood stars imprinted on the concrete sidewalk  in front of the entrance.

One of the points where there is more concentration is the  legendary Marilyn Monroe, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Harry Potter.  And without a doubt, this is one of the main tourist attractions in Hollywood.

The theater  hosted the Oscar awards between 1944 and 1946 . Today, it is a reference to one of the biggest and best technologies in the world used in audio and video.

Another point that must be taken into account when visiting it is its decoration.

The element that most caught my attention was the central chandelier, in addition to the seats and the entrance hall. It really is worth doing this tour internally.

There are two alternatives to enter the Chinese Theater. It is possible to buy a ticket to see a movie or take a guided tour in English, which takes place every 30 minutes.

Both options can be purchased at the ticket office, subject to availability. To ensure your entry on a specific day, the ideal is to buy online in advance.

5. Explore Griffith Observatory

My recommendation is that you come at sunset and let night fall. Not too late either because they close the access parking lot.

You can get there by car, but parking near the observatory is very expensive ($10 an hour).

There are other free car parks further away, from which you can then go back on foot.

Those in good physical shape can hike up to the observatory on one of the many hiking trails through immense Griffith Park.

For all the others, there is a comfortable bus called  DASH Observatory , which takes you from the subway station at the intersection of Sunset and Vermont to the Griffith Observatory, and runs until evening.

6. Meet Celebrities At Madame Tussauds Hollywood

The capital of American cinema could not fail to have one of the most famous wax museums in the world, right?

Located on Hollywood Boulevard, its  doors opened in 2009 to present 115 figures  from music, sports, and cinema.

You’ll get to see wax figures of Hollywood’s most famous celebrities, such as  Marilyn Monroe, Johnny Depp, Obama, Beyonce, Angelina Jolie, Lady Gaga, Brad Pitt, Charlie Chaplin, and Elvis Presley , among others.

So if you have a celebrity that you admire, you can take the opportunity to get a picture with them, even if it’s just in wax.

There are also themes like Superheroes with Spiderman, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and more characters from the world of Marvel; Modern Classics with Tom Hanks, John Travolta, Patrick Swayze, and Sylvester Stallone.

As you can see, you can spend hours taking pictures, creating stories, and getting to know certain pieces of Hollywood history up close.

7. Shop ‘Til You Drop On Rodeo Drive

Considered the most exclusive street in the state of California, Rodeo Drive is lined with beautiful coconut trees that we often see in Hollywood films.

Located in the Beverly Hills neighborhood, it brings together the most desirable brands in the world in  just 500 meters of extension .

Brands such as Dolce & Gabbana, Armani, Ferrari, and Rolls Royce are also there, among others of great elegance.

It’s not difficult to walk down the street and meet a movie star because that’s exactly where they do their shopping.

That is to say, to buy something here or even have lunch, you have to scratch (and a lot) your pocket!

But the truth is that I don’t think it’s necessary to visit it just for the purpose of buying.

Just looking at the shop windows, which are super elaborate, is already an interesting experience, especially at Christmas when they get beautiful decorations!

But if you have enough money to buy a Chanel bag, Rodeo Drive is the ideal spot to go.

I recommend a quick visit to the site, even if you’re pressed for time. It’s really worth it, even if it’s just to take a picture in one of the corners of this incredible tourist spot in Hollywood.

Another option is to just have a coffee at  Urth Caffe , a chain of coffee shops in LA that serves brunches, desserts, and other tasty treats.

This is because although there are several public parking lots, they sell out quickly!

8.   Visit The Departed Celebrities At Hollywood Forever Cemetery

The Hollywood Forever cemetery really deserves to be visited, even by those who don’t usually visit these places.

Film and music stars, directors, producers, costume designers, and screenwriters are buried here.

They rest in the shade of towering palm trees, surrounded by green lawns, flower-filled rock gardens, and pretty ponds with ordinance willow.

Belonging to the world of entertainment and celebrity status, this cemetery has allowed the death of Hollywood Forever to rest in creative graves, realistic statues, and amusing epitaphs that worthily remember the extraordinary nature of their lives.

Among the big names buried here are  Judy Garland, Cecil B. DeMille, Rudolph Valentino, Bugsy Siegel, Mel Blanc, Chris Cornell, Dee Dee Ramone , and many more.

Hollywood Forever, in recent years, has been able to make the most of its tourist vocation and its link with entertainment: Halloween night becomes an open-air cinema where you can see horror films surrounded by tombs, and more events are organized at other times of the year such as treasure hunts, thematic guided tours, and other film screenings.

10. Take The Universal Studios Tour

In my opinion, this is one of the most fun tourist spots in Hollywood since you can interact more with the attractions.

As I’ve been here twice, at two different times, I observe that they change each year.

For those who have been to Universal Florida, you will notice that this park is smaller, but it does not leave anything to be desired.

The most crowded attraction is  Harry Potter . So, the tip is to go to the rides that are close to it and, when you see that the queue has decreased, run there, as it is a must. 

Revenge of the Mummy  is the most frequented roller coaster in the park, be sure to go even if the wait is long.

If you don’t want to face queues, there is also a  VIP ticket , which is a little more expensive and gives you quick access, but you can only go once to each attraction.

It’s worth every penny, even more so if it’s summer when Universal is packed, and the heat is unbearable.

Another point taken into account is the means of transport to the location.

If you rent a car, be aware that parking in the park costs from 27 to 50 dollars, depending on the location of the space.

A practical, safe, and much cheaper way is to take the subway at Walk of Fame and get off at Universal City station, which is right in front of the park.

11. Tour The Warner Bros Studio

If you are fascinated by cinema or the series Friends, you definitely need to visit the Warner Bros Studio.

In it, you can see sets of films that are still being produced and still sit on the couch where hundreds of movies/series have been recorded.

As LA is the land of cinematography, it is almost impossible not to go to a movie studio.

As I’ve been to California’s three most famous theme parks, my tip is to go to Warner Bros and Universal Studios, especially if you’re a first-timer.

At Warner Bros, tours take place daily but sometimes change as the warehouses are closed due to filming, so each visit is a different experience.

Two types of tours are offered, Deluxe and VIP. In The first, the visit takes about 5 hours and is much more detailed, but much more expensive.

The traditional one lasts 2.5 hours, and I particularly think it’s enough for those who don’t want to spend most of their time here.

12. Attend A Concert At The Hollywood Bowl

One of the best things to do in Hollywood is to enjoy the music at the  Hollywood Bowl , an open-air venue where many shows and concerts take place.

Since its opening in 1922, it has played host to basically every major entertainer, with names ranging from the Beatles to Prince and Kanye West.

It’s an amazing place to catch a show, with SURREAL architecture (designed by Frank Lloyd Wright’s son), incredible acoustics, multiple TV screens, and other factors that go beyond expectations.

By the way, this is one of the  favorite stages of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra . So the best way to enjoy your time here is to attend a show or concert.

To complete, the place has an excellent view of the Hollywood sign and a small museum ( the Hollywood Bowl Museum ) with a movie exhibition, free and very cool.

It is worth searching the Hollywood Bowl website for the shows and concerts that will be held and buying tickets in advance.

13. Unwind At Griffith Park

This park is a major historic attraction in the city of Los Angeles. This park offers the possibility of strolling through tree-lined canyons and doing sports, such as  horse riding, cycling, golf, tennis, and even swimming.  

The flora and fauna are very rich:  over 150 species of plants,  including rare autochthonous species such as the Southern California black walnut, deer, coyotes, raccoons, foxes, bobcats, and even mountain lions live here, along with a variety of native insects including two very rare butterflies.

If you’re not a fan of nature trekking, there are many other good reasons to visit Griffith Park: the magnificent views of Los Angeles.

This is also the best spot for photographing the famous Hollywood sign, and the  Griffith Observatory  (which I’ve already talked about) is also located around.

With all these attractions in one place, you won’t be disappointed coming here.

After all, it’s one of the best places in Hollywood to enjoy nature and see wild animals. And the best part is that it’s possible to use public transport to reach Griffith Park.

The Metro connects Los Angeles to the stop for the park shuttles, Dash Observatory.

14. See Some Illusion At The Museum Of Illusion

Feed your imagination with 3D exhibits and the famous Upside Down House. Los Angeles’ premier institution of illusions will put your brain to work like never before!

There is a  1972 mural by local artist Richard Wyatt on the South wall  of the building that pays homage to the clubs and artists that have made their mark in the Hollywood music scene.

All in all, the Capitol Records Building is an essential stop for all music lovers.

This makes a visit here to be one of the best things to do in Hollywood. But remember, parking can be a bit tight in the morning.

So if you don’t want to worry about it, use public transportation.

16. Get Amazed At Ripley’s, Believe It Or Not

On the corner of famous Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue is a strange-looking building with a funny three-dimensional dinosaur on the roof; it is Ripley’s Believe it or Not museum.

The museum was founded by Robert Ripley, an American cartoonist, reporter, and amateur anthropologist who amassed his collection of curiosities while traveling around the world.

And today, hundreds of strange and unusual exhibits from all over the world are exhibited on two floors in 11 halls.

There you will find heads that were  shrunken by the Jibaro Indians , the tallest man in the world, Superman’s cape, the biggest tire in the world, Marilyn Monroe’s makeup bag, a two-headed turtle, a model of the Tower Bridge made of matches, the Lizard Man and paintings made with materials you wouldn’t believe, and they look perfect.

And this is just a small part of the collection, as there is more to be seen.

Therefore, let your imagination run wild and be surprised by the things you’ll see at this museum.

After all, it is a place where you can Believe it or Not. And being one of the unique attractions in Hollywood, this place is a must-see.

17. Tour The Hollyhock House

Perched on a hill  East of Hollywood  and built  from 1919 to 1921,  Hollyhock House was  designed by Franck Lloyd Wright  for Aline Barnsdall.

The very rich heiress, intellectual, and producer of experimental theater wanted an acropolis of culture anda multidisciplinary artistic park. 

But for budgetary reasons, the project was reduced to Hollyhock House alone, a massive construction of 17 rooms, seven bathrooms, and two secondary residences.

Wright called the villa a Californian romance, but attributions to the most diverse architectural styles were not lacking.

Some saw an inspiration to Mayan or Aztec architecture, others a reference to Asia and Egypt. 

Barnsdall’s request for a residence that was half house, half garden inspired the many terraces, colonnades, and pergolas that enhance the indoor and outdoor spaces of Hollyhock House. 

Barnsdall donated the Hollyhock House to the City of Los Angeles  in 1927. And today, the house is open to the public for tours. You can opt for docent-led tours, but most visitors prefer the self–guided tour.

18. See The Animals At Los Angeles Zoo

Home to  about 270 species of animals , the Los Angeles Zoo and BotanicalGardens is a great addition to the list of best things to do in Hollywood with kids, but it also delights adults.

However, taking pictures is impossible due to security issues imposed by the establishment. Even so, the experience is valid and is engraved in the memory.

20. Explore La Brea Tar Pits

La Brea Tar Pits is one of the most interesting places in Hollywood for lovers of paleontology.

This is  an open-air archaeological site  where you can find fossils of the animals that lived in the area thousands of years ago.

It is believed that the animals got trapped in the asphalt pits and ended up becoming fossils over the years.

Some of the prehistoric species found at this site are American lions, Pleistocene mammoths, saber-toothed cats, ground sloths, short-faced bears, and giant wolves.

Today, you’ll find life-size replicas of these animals placed in the same area where they were found.

The site also has its own museum where, in addition to fossils, you can admire full-scale representations of the huge mammals that inhabited the planet thousands of years ago.

So if you don’t know what to do in Hollywood but want to see something that no other city in the world offers, I suggest allocating a few hours to appreciate the La Brea Tar Pits.

It’s a delight to recognize costumes and remember cool movies. Another strong point of the museum is its incredible collection of photos of Marilyn Monroe.

I left there thinking she was beautiful and the best. Undoubtedly, this is one of the best museums to visit in Hollywood. I loved it and recommend the visit.

24. Get A Taste Of The Celebrity Lifestyle At One Of Beverly Hills Luxury Hotels

You need at least a day to really enjoy the glamor of Hollywood. After all, it is home to a number of luxurious hotels, spas, and shopping complexes.

25. Hike At Runyon Canyon Park

Enough of museums! Anyone who likes sports and prefers hilly nature to running routes from Santa Monica to Venice Beach should try Runyon Canyon.

At their best, they take the guesswork out of exploring major tourist attractions and celebrity hangouts, and can sometimes offer an offbeat look at Hollywood history. But finding a perfect route is a challenge, especially when most Hollywood tours barely even take place in Hollywood; in fact, most are excursions through  West Hollywood’s Sunset Strip as well as Beverly Hills .

Yosemite National Park in Northern California is one of the United States' most scenic and most visited national parks. Home to the largest trees on Earth, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are bucket-list destinations . The sequoias here are the largest living things in the world, and many of them are more than 2,000 years old, with some even more than 3,000 years old.

These adjacent parks cover an area of mountains with majestic granite peaks, deep gorges, lakes, rivers, and forests, but they are quite different from each other. If you are planning on visiting both parks, you will need at least a couple of days.

Although both parks are home to the giant sequoias, Sequoia National Park is arguably the best place to visit these ancient wonders. Walking through a forest of giant redwoods, towering more than 300 feet above you, feels like entering another era. Descendants of trees from the Jurassic Period, these are the tallest trees on the planet, and they are truly one of California's greatest treasures.

These jointly managed parks, which include Redwood National Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Redwoods State Park, and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, stretch out along a spectacular portion of Northern California Coast. Each offers something a little different, but in all of them you can find great hiking trails and beautiful campgrounds .

Joshua trees bring a type of magic to this otherwise lunar-like landscape, where giant boulders and rock formations create wild shapes that capture the imagination. The park covers 800,000 acres and offers a range of diverse sites that include much more than just the Joshua trees.

The Cholla Cactus Garden , where chollas stretch out endlessly along the hillside to the mountains beyond, the ruins of the historic Keys Ranch , the giant palms of the Lost Palms Oasis, and the vista from over 5,000 feet at Keys View are just some of the highlights. Also don't miss Skull Rock ; a huge rock resembling an alien skull.

If you are going to stay awhile, you may want to consider spending a night under the stars and trees at one of the fabulous campgrounds in Joshua Tree National Park .

This amusement park and movie studio is one of the most popular attractions in California, and the perfect place for families with older children and teens. Rides and sets are based on famous movies, with everything from shockingly realistic simulator rides to roller coasters, and much more.

You can tour huge sets on studio tours. Some of the most popular experiences in the park are The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Fast and Furious - Supercharged, Jurassic World, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, and The Walking Dead Attraction, among others. Hearst Castle, officially known as the Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument, was started in 1919 and built over a 28-year period, resulting in a mix of architectural styles that make it quirky and stately all at the same time. Built by newspaper baron William Randolph Hearst, the 165-room castle was never completed.

It sits atop a hill at an elevation of 1,600 feet and offers fantastic views out over the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Lucia Range. One of the major attractions here is the immense collection of art. At one time, the castle was home to the world's largest private zoo, and to this day, zebras and other exotic wildlife can be seen wandering the grounds.

The castle is located almost exactly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Drive time from either city is approximately four hours.

Part of the Channel Islands, Santa Catalina lies about 22 miles southwest of Los Angeles. The island is a popular destination with boaters and day trippers. Avalon is the main population center and where most of the action is centered. On the other end of the island is the much smaller village of Two Harbours.

While most people come to Santa Catalina Island to wander around and enjoy a day of leisure, other popular things to do include glass bottom boat tours, scuba diving, kayaking, and parasailing. You can reach the island by ferry from San Pedro, Long Beach, Newport Beach, and Dana Point.

Channel Islands National Park, made up of five individual islands, is a great place to see wildlife and a little undisturbed nature. Having always been isolated from the mainland, the islands have developed independently, and as a result, have many endemic animals.

The islands are located off the Southern California coast and are only accessible by park concessionaire boats and planes, or private boats. You can learn about current conditions and arrange transport at the mainland visitor centers located in Ventura and Santa Barbara.

The Getty Center is one of the premier museums in the United States. The museum holds treasures by great artists like Monet and Van Gogh, along with sculptures and other beautiful forms of art prior to 1900.

A visit here is also about the architecture and grounds of the museum itself. The building flows and undulates in a shimmering curtain of white, while out front, intricate gardens and waterfalls complete the scene. Be sure to check out the amazing views out over Los Angeles from one of the many patios.

If you've ever wanted to lie by the pool in the morning and make snow angels in the afternoon, put a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway on your list of California things to do. California's desert regions are all about elevation. The higher you go, the colder it gets. In the spring, the pool and snow combo is easily accomplished.

The tramway runs for two miles and ascends up to an elevation of 8,516 feet on the slopes of Mount Jacinto. The tramway is unique in its design; each of the trams rotate as they ascend, allowing for uninterrupted views across a 360-degree panorama. In fact, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is the largest of its kind in the world.

At the top, choose to be active by walking or hiking on the 50 miles of trails, or more sedate by enjoying a spectacular view over lunch or dinner at one of the two restaurants. This area offers some of the best hiking around Palm Springs .

One of California's greatest free attractions is the Griffith Observatory. Perched high on Mount Hollywood and overlooking the city of Los Angeles, this iconic California attraction offers not only fantastic views out over the city but also the opportunity to learn about the heavens.

Inside the observatory are six galleries devoted to all aspects of space and how we observe it. In addition to the galleries are the public telescopes, allowing you to view the heavens in a way you've never imagined.

Even if all that doesn't interest you, the parking lot is an excellent spot to get a photo of the Hollywood sign.

If you've ever wanted to explore a giant aircraft carrier and find yourself in San Diego, you are in luck. Moored right in the center of the action, the USS Midway Museum is a real-life WWII ship that has been converted to a hands-on museum.

An ideal family thing to do in San Diego , this is no boring museum. Here, you and your crew will be walking down narrow passageways, climbing ladders, and descending into the bowels of the ship. Throughout the ship are more than 60 exhibits, 29 restored aircraft, a theater, and flight simulators. Plan for three to four hours for your visit.

With the city of Anaheim unanimously voting to pass DisneylandForward , the Disneyland Resort will be forever changed.

Twice in the last 69 years, Disneyland has been significantly transformed. Four years after the park opened in 1959, Disneyland added its monorail, the Matterhorn Bobsleds and a submarine ride and expanded Autopia. It was a message that would begin to fulfill Walt Disney’s promise that Disneyland would never be completed.

More than that, however, it revealed that Disneyland would continue to look to the future. Disneyland in 1959 showed its guests possibilities — a transportation system in the monorail that could remake urban communities, a tease of the freeway system that would reshape travel and a glimpse at the sort of deep-sea excursions only a lucky few could witness. The Matterhorn, while inspired by the film “Third Man on the Mountain,” also was meant to be a transportive experience, to not only bring to Disneyland a new kind of thrill ride but give visitors a taste of international adventure.

Disneyland’s second reimagining came much later. In 2001 the Walt Disney Co. would open Disney California Adventure, the Grand Californian hotel and the Downtown Disney District. These additions would attempt to make Disneyland, the company’s original park, one that could, in theory, rival Florida’s Walt Disney World by becoming a resort that could demand multiday stays.

This expansion succeeded as well, but not overnight.

The original vision of Disney California Adventure proved to be lackluster, relying heavily on on-the-shelf rides and lacking emotion-driven experiences that take visitors out of their daily life. While the Grand Californian is a Craftsman-inspired triumph, Downtown Disney is in the midst of a transformation and is still attempting to outgrow its reputation as a home for chains and midtier eateries.

And now we’re entering a new era of possibilities, one that likely will look much different from the prior two. Modern Disney is centered on intellectual property — or IP, in corporate speak — rather than Walt-era idealism, and the most tantalizing prospects of DisneylandForward center on building around existing structures rather than erecting a new park.

With DisneylandForward, the company won the flexibility to redesign the resort. Zoning rules will be amended so that Disney can add new attractions alongside hotels on the west side of Disneyland Drive. These will, if they come to fruition, likely be extensions of Disneyland or Disney California Adventure rather than a third park. Additionally, a new shopping, dining and entertainment district can be created to the southeast on what is currently the Toy Story parking lot at Katella Avenue and Harbor Boulevard.

Company brass and the DisneylandForward materials have offered teases of what could be built. Most of these have centered on recent expansions at Disney’s international parks, such as the World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland or Zootopia at Shanghai Disney Resort. There’s been little ideological talk about the future of Disneyland, as the focus has centered squarely on popular properties and franchises rather than the resort’s status as a cultural hub and gathering space.

But DisneylandForward came with a pledge. The Walt Disney Co. has promised to spend a minimum of $1.9 billion on Disneyland attractions, lodging, entertainment, shopping and dining in the next 10 years. That money can go quickly, with modern attractions costing sometimes in the high six figures, but the Walt Disney Co. also is in the midst of doubling down on its theme parks. Disney has guaranteed to spend $60 billion over the next 10 years in its experiences division, with at least half of that total dedicated to parks and resorts, according to a recent SEC filing .

It’s safe to say that the next 10 years will shape Disneyland for decades to come. While there’s much to be revealed, there are, perhaps, some safe bets. Here are a few educated guesses as to what to expect with an expanded Disneyland in the near term.

Get ready for Pandora

DisneylandForward materials reference everything from “Tangled” to “Peter Pan” to “Tron” as possible experiences that could come to Anaheim. One word, however, is missing, and it’s one that’s been regularly referenced by Disney brass in recent weeks: “Avatar.”

Disney CEO Bob Iger mentioned it at a recent shareholder meeting, even sharing the “Avatar” concept art, which was referred to as “inspirational artwork.” Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences, wrote in a blog post after the shareholder event that further news on Disneyland-related attractions such as the “Avatar” experience was tied to the approval of DisneylandForward.

“We are excited about the stories our guests could experience at Walt’s original theme park destination after approval of DisneylandForward — including the chance to experience all-new Avatar adventures with a visit to Pandora,” D’Amaro wrote . And last night in Anaheim, Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock again teased “Avatar” at the DisneylandForward hearing and vote. Finally, one of Disney’s most respected theme park creatives even posted the “Avatar” concept art on Instagram , expressing the hope of sharing more on the project in the future.

Consider a large-scale “Avatar”-inspired land all but a done deal, and the art shared for Disneyland isn’t an exact replica of Florida’s Pandora — The World of Avatar, which resides in that coast’s Animal Kingdom park. Now where to put it? Expect Pandora to be bound for Disney California Adventure. There’s been speculation that it could replace the area currently served by water ride Grizzly River Run or move into a largely vacant slot of Hollywood Land, but neither is ideal. The latter requires a rerouting of the monorail, and Grizzly River Run remains a popular attraction.

Here’s betting it’s positioned in one of the DCA expansion areas near the Pixar Place Hotel, as that would allow the company to give the James Cameron property a plethora of space, especially if Disney must hide a large show building behind an illusion of floating mountains.

Expect more hotel options

With Disneyland lacking the acreage of Florida’s Walt Disney World, hotel prices in Anaheim are at a premium. Rooms for the recently revamped Pixar Place Hotel — Anaheim’s “budget” option — can routinely top $500 per night. More hotel space is needed, and if Disneyland goes all-in on “Avatar,” expect lodging and more entertainment options to follow close behind. Disney has long touted development of the Toy Story Lot as prime space for hotel, dining and entertainment modeled after Florida’s Disney Springs district.

The DisneylandForward materials mention the land as “the perfect location to cater to locals, conventioneers, hotel and Disneyland Resort guests with restaurants, hotels, live music, shopping, ticketed shows and theme park experiences.” A new proposed parking structure to the north would solve the parking issue, and Disney has done extensive research on this already, as it was part of an earlier, pre-pandemic planned development known as the “Eastern Gateway.”

Walkways to and from the new parking structure would connect the current resort to the new entertainment area. And while fans may want Disney to rapidly fill the available space with theme park attractions, if the resort is planning to increase capacity it’s first going to need a spot for those guests to park. Additionally, Iger at a recent media event said the company likely would hold back some of its theme park funds so the organization could move on the popularity of new films or franchises.

“We actually have a fairly good idea in the near term of what’s being built, but we’re purposefully not going to allocate it all,” Iger said. “Because who knows? In five years we can end up with a giant hit movie — think ‘Frozen’ — that we may want to mine essentially as an attraction, or a hotel or restaurant in our parks. So you want to maintain some flexibility.”

What about ‘Frozen’s’ Arendelle? Or a ‘Coco’-themed experience?

Beyond “Avatar,” which seems a sure thing as it’s been mentioned by Iger on multiple occasions, any future aspects of DisneylandForward become pure speculation. But a couple of franchises may have higher priority than others.

Disney now has a “Frozen” attraction in Walt Disney World, a land in Hong Kong and experiences in the works for Disneyland Paris and Tokyo DisneySea. Walt Disney Imagineering, the company’s secretive arm devoted to theme park experiences, clearly has done the work on bringing “Frozen” to life in physical spaces, and it stands to reason that expansions to the original Disneyland Park, with its fairy-tale feel, would go more of a Fantasyland-inspired route.

What’s more, re-creating Arendelle in the expansion plots located near the Disneyland Hotel would give Disney the opportunity to construct a second castle, as any extensive changes to park centerpiece Sleeping Beauty Castle are prohibited due to structural limitations . The enduring popularity of “Frozen” seems relatively assured at this point, so bringing the franchise to Disneyland is far from a risk.

Star Tours has become one of Disneyland’s most versatile attractions, and its latest update nods to series such as ‘The Mandalorian,’ ‘Ahsoka’ and ‘Andor.’

But if the company opts to create something unique for Southern California rather than importing Hong Kong’s World of Frozen or Shanghai’s Zootopia, one franchise that seems to be routinely brought up by executives is “Coco.” When mentioning blue-sky concepts last year year at an investor event in Florida, D’Amaro teased “Coco” as a key film that has yet to be properly explored in the Disney parks.

Potrock again mentioned “Coco” in an op-ed in the Orange County Register touting the benefits of DisneylandForward, writing that the initiative could pave the way for “the chance to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos in a ‘Coco’-themed experience.” Disney California Adventure, of course, is home to a Dia de Los Muertos celebration that does center a short “Coco” show, and the property seems especially ripe for Southern California and our heavily Latino communities. That makes it an opportunity to give Disneyland an unique land not found in other parks while also tapping into the region’s diverse fan base. Walt’s original park deserves no less as it looks ahead to closing out its first century.
