Simple Plan’s Pierre Bouvier: Warped Tour Was ‘an Experience Like No Other’

By Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone

Since the Nineties, Vans Warped Tour has been a constant, integral part of Pierre Bouvier’s life. He played the tour a few times with Reset, and later, with bandmate Chuck Comeau, formed Simple Plan . Warped Tour helped Simple Plan not only find their footing in the early Aughts but has remained a way for the group to stay connected with their heroes, friends and fans with over 10 years of playing the tour.

Following news that Vans Warped Tour would cease to exist following the 2018 trek , Bouvier spoke with Rolling Stone  about his personal history with founder Kevin Lyman and the Warped community, as well as the state of the scene the festival brought to prominence.

When we first played Warped Tour with Simple Plan, I already had a lot of experience with Warped Tour on my own, just attending and being part of it with other bands. I remember playing the Toronto show, and our way of doing it was super DIY. We went around the entire crowd all day along with a couple Walkmans to play our five-song demo. We’d walk up to people and say “Hey do you want to hear some music? We’re playing at 1 o’clock at whatever-stage-we’re playing-at.” We would go out and recruit fans one-on-one. It was this one time a year where all us like-minded punk rock and pop-punk fans would get to see each other, meet each other and be around people who were similar to us outside our friends and bandmates. We would realize in each city that there were so many people who enjoy Blink-182 and Green Day and Face to Face and Offspring and Pennywise and all these cool bands you don’t see on MTV or hear on the radio.

Of course, this was a time before social media exploded. Being able to tap into something like that was a lot harder. It wasn’t like we could press a button on our phone and find each other. You had to find these alternative music stores or go to Warped Tour and get a glimpse of who these bands were and what this culture was like. It was a really special time of year when these bands came around.

Either the year before or after we played for the first time as Simple Plan, Chuck and I attended Warped as fans. Because of our experiences with our previous plan, we had a relationship with some of the guys from Blink-182 since we had played some shows together. I know that Chuck had hung out with Mark [Hoppus] quite a bit. I think it was at the Toronto Warped Tour we basically waited outside their tour bus for them to emerge so we can possibly intercept them and play them our newest demo we had recorded in Montreal. That was how you did it back then: you would find bands you liked and play them your song.

I have a vivid memory of being outside Blink’s tour bus, hoping they would come out so we could say hi. I remember feeling so stupid and thinking “Man, what are we doing here? They don’t want to talk to us!” Chuck was like “No, man! I know Mark, and he’ll be happy to see me!” So we waited for hours, and they finally come out and we pass along the demo. That demo had an early version of the song “I’d Do Anything,” which ended up being our second single off our first album. Mark really loved the demo and started corresponding with Chuck. Then we thought it would be the coolest thing as little pop-punk boys from Montreal to ask Mark if he would sing on the song, which he ended up doing. Basically the Warped Tour is a huge factor in how the band got some notoriety and excitement and hype around it. It ended up being a big hit for us.

That vibe was really important. Everyone is the same on Warped. All the tour buses are parked together. Everybody eats the same catering. It allows people to hopefully catch a glimpse of their musical heroes.

I think for a lot of our fans and fellow bands, we’ve always been considered on the poppier side of Warped Tour. We’ve had a lot of mainstream success and radio support, and there are a lot of people who may not be hardcore Warped Tour fans who may know our band that heard our songs. But it was always important for us to remain part of that scene and not just be an MTV pop-punk band. This tour is where our music started, and where we as fans started. It’s important for us to keep being part of it.

We’ve always made a conscious effort to go, even though there were some years it financially didn’t make much sense to do Warped Tour; because there’s so many bands, it’s not a huge moneymaker for anybody. We could’ve taken more lucrative offers somewhere else, but it was important for us to go play – and possibly lose some money but to connect with our fans. [Playing] the Warped Tour as a band is an experience like no other. It’s like going to summer camp.

The 50 Greatest Pop-Punk Albums

Kevin Lyman [Warped Tour’s founder] and his team really handpicked bands that are part of a style. If you like Green Day, Blink-182, Simple Plan or Good Charlotte and so many other bands, you’re probably going to like the band playing on any stage. That’s what cool –  it gives an opportunity to bands in this style … they could expose their music to a potential crowd that already kind of likes the style that they’re doing.

Also, it didn’t always work the way Kevin envisioned it, but it kept bands humble. If you went on Warped Tour and thought you were cool but acted like a dick or above everyone else, there’s a chance you might get kicked off the tour. There was even a year that I believe Alien Ant Farm had a bit of an attitude when their Michael Jackson cover was blowing up and got kicked off the tour because of it. It’s humbling, and at the time could’ve been frustrating.

You can go see someone who is on the verge like Katy Perry, Sugar Ray or even Eminem … on a small stage at a random time, and it’ll be chaos and mayhem. That was part of the magic.

For us, we played Warped in 2002 and it was right when No Pads, No Helmets…Just Balls came out and we started blowing up. Our pay on that tour was peanuts — maybe $200, $300 a day — and we were playing a small stage that could barely accommodate the crowds coming to see us. At the end of the tour, Kevin asked us to do it the following year and we agreed to a $500 a day contract for 2003. As that year progressed, we became so huge with a platinum record and everything blowing up. We came back to Kevin and said we needed more money, and he said “Nope! We agreed on a handshake for $500.” At the time it was so frustrating. We were one of the biggest bands on the bill and were getting paid shit. Looking back, it’s part of the mentality.

That’s what is cool about it. You can go see someone who is on the verge like Katy Perry, Sugar Ray or even Eminem. You can see them on a small stage at a random time, and it’ll be chaos and mayhem. That was part of the magic. We’re all the same, and now that we know Kevin a little better, I do think that’s what he was trying to achieve: not to create a bunch of asshole rock stars. I think some people took it the wrong way, but I get it.

But Warped Tour was part of a generation. Over the last five years, it’s not as tightknit and genre-specific as it used to be. Back in 2000, all the bands on Warped had a similar sound, where now, and because it’s only normal that music is evolving and changing, there’s a lot more things . From electronic music to people like Machine Gun Kelly and Twenty One Pilots. It’s no longer just bands playing guitars and drums and rocking out. It wasn’t sustainable as it once was anymore

It’s going to have to be replaced by something, one way or another. I think it’s a shame that something like that can’t keep going and exist and be a place for people to exist and discover new things outside of their phone or social media or Spotify. Then again, that’s where the future is going. That’s evolution and how our parents feel about us and how we’re gonna feel about our kids.

It’s a shame that that this style and culture can’t sustain itself as it used to. There will always be alternative styles and music and cultures. By the time my kids are in high school, I’m sure there will be things they love that will make me go “What the hell is this?” For them, that will be their Warped Tour.

Even the style of music that Vans Warped Tour represented at the beginning and even halfway through, I don’t know that that style of music will get a lot of new pioneers. I don’t know if there will be another Blink-182. There will be other people who are alternative and different, but all the pop-punk pioneers are doing things that are nothing like what they used to do. Is it because they got bored of it? Have all those bases been covered? Have all those songs been written? I don’t know.

‘It Was 11 Guys on a Bus, and Then Me’: Women on the Warped Tour

As the traveling punk-rock extravaganza begins its final full cross-country run, the women who performed on the male-dominated festival tell their stories.

On the first Warped Tour, in 1995, the traveling punk-rock extravaganza was so low-budget that its founder, Kevin Lyman, had to buy supermarket hot dogs to feed the musicians. One day, the Sublime singer Bradley Nowell’s Dalmatian urinated on the buns.

“That was my favorite moment,” recalled Donita Sparks of L7, another top band on the bill that year. The other roving festivals of the time, from Lollapalooza to Lilith Fair, had an air of sophistication, but Warped was dirty, D.I.Y., and lacking air-conditioning and proper restrooms — and only three of the 21 headlining bands included women. When the tour sets off from Pomona, Calif., on Thursday for what’s billed as its final full cross-country trek , only six of the 84 bands listed on the lineup posted on the Warped website have women members, or 7 percent, far lower than the 19 percent average on top festivals this year, according to a recent study by the online music magazine Pitchfork.

The Vans Warped Tour, now in its 24th year, has expanded its catering to include gourmet and vegan options. But its core mission remains essentially the same — raging, screaming, punk and metal bands and bouncier emo and pop-punk groups, from mainstays like All Time Low and Taking Back Sunday to promising younger acts on smaller stages, setting up shop at amphitheaters and in parking lots from San Diego to West Palm Beach, Fla. Warped has showcased women stars over the years, including No Doubt, Katy Perry, Paramore and the underground bands on the pink-and-black Shiragirl stage, but its gender imbalance has remained striking.

The New York Times spoke to 75 women and nonbinary musicians who have performed on the tour, many of whom echoed NPR Music’s Ann Powers, who recently criticized Warped as a “wild boys’ paradise.” Some divulged #MeToo stories; others ripped bands known for making misogynistic remarks onstage. Most had kind things to say about Mr. Lyman, a former Lollapalooza stage manager who scouts Warped bands himself, praising him for hiring so many women in charge of production, catering and other departments. And some said they are intent on making a statement at this year’s festival. Doll Skin, a quartet of women from Phoenix, is employing an all-female crew and working to support the other women performers. “We make a little alliance, almost,” said the band’s 21-year-old drummer, Meghan Herring. These are edited excerpts from the conversations.

How would you describe your Warped Tour experience?

NOVENA CARMEL, 36, OF WALLPAPER It’s sort of like boot camp and a circus.

CHESKA ZAIDE, 20, OF A+ DROPOUTS Everything I didn’t like about the tour, like the heavy lifting, the sun, just the tiredness of it all, is everything that I loved about it.

SYDNEY “SQUID” SILVER OF LUNACHICKS It’s 100 degrees in the desert in the hot sun. We’re wearing vinyl cheerleader outfits. You actually have to train for it or you’ll pass out.

SIENNA DEGOVIA, 42, OF THE RANDIES Many, many times, I’d set up my sleeping bag in some disgusting restroom gym of a stadium.

MEG FRAMPTON, 33, OF MEG & DIA I did feel a pressure to drink like everybody else and party like the guys, whereas what I would’ve naturally wanted to do was have some tea and, I don’t know, watch a chick flick and go to sleep.

JESSICA VAUGHN, 30, OF CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES It was 11 guys on a bus, and then me. And they were passing gas. That was my summer.

K.FLAY, 32 There’s kind of a scene, within the Warped Tour community, of people who are really into backyard, down-home wrestling. I remember being in downtown Kansas City and it was still burning hot at 10:30 or 11 and everybody was crowded around this makeshift wrestling ring. I was like an anthropologist: “And now, the wrestling!”

LINDSAY CARD, 32, OF MIGHTY MONGO Our bus broke down a lot but we never missed a show. There were times we had to call taxis in the middle of the night to make it to the next venue.

NICOLETTE VILAR, 38, OF GO BETTY GO Looking back at it now, as a grown lady, I think it was straight-up dangerous.

AIXA VILAR, 37, OF GO BETTY GO We were in truck stops in the middle of the night.

NICOLETTE VILAR You guys left me at a gas station once.

AIXA VILAR That was by accident.

On a male-dominated tour, how did you approach your performances?

MONIQUE POWELL, 42, OF SAVE FERRIS The people who came to the shows loved punk, so they were pretty cool with a girl going up there and shooting her mouth off. It really helped me formulate what I was going to become. I really felt so comfortable to be myself.

GINA VOLPE OF LUNACHICKS The drummer for NOFX had broken his thumb right before one of their sets, so they had drummers from eight bands come and play two songs for their set — Pennywise and Green Day and Papa Roach, and our drummer, Helen [Destroy], who at the time was 19. All these dudes came on and played their two songs, then our teenage girl got up there and played her two songs and all the male drummers on the side of the stage sat there with their mouths open because she blew every single one of them away.

STELLA KATSOUDAS OF DIRTY LITTLE RABBITS All the other bands were very aggressive — the girls and the guys. I had this idea in my head that I wanted to completely embrace my femininity, like completely just go over the top with it. So I had this designer custom make me five sparkly tour dresses and I did my hair and my makeup for every single show.

SHAWNA POTTER, 36, OF WAR ON WOMEN It’s important to talk about the fact that we got to rock the [expletive] out, too, and we got to change people’s minds. We had dads coming up to us saying, “I’m so glad my daughter got to watch you, you guys are awesome.” And little trans kids still figuring their [expletive] out, saying, “Thank God you’re here.”

What was your daily lived experience of being a woman on Warped Tour like?

SILVER There was an artist on that tour saying, “Which 20-year-old girls am I going to get pregnant tonight?” And the same individual wanted to shake our hands, and we’re like, “You’ve got to be [expletive] kidding me, man.”

LEANOR ORTEGA TILL, 41, OF FIVE IRON FRENZY You had to be careful going onto everyone’s bus — it’s not a safe idea. One of the bands we went out with had a little inflatable pool. They’d get in their underwear and go out there and hang out. And I knew what they were up to, which was get girls into their underwear to hang out, too. So I would get in there and put my feet in [the pool] and read a book. But the guys knew me and they were nice to me. I was a drag. I don’t care.

KATY PERRY, 33 There were so many strong females who have led the way since the beginning of Warped Tour: Save Ferris, Juliette Lewis, Gwen Stefani, my friend Hayley [Williams] from Paramore. My album at the time was “One of the Boys” so it was something that was crossing my mind often — it felt good not only to be able to keep up with the boys, but do it all in heels.

DEGOVIA There wasn’t a whole lot of oversexualizing of women. Maybe it has to do with how the tour was really connected to skateboarding and skate culture and that was all opening up to women. I didn’t feel a lot of “this girl is hot, so her band is better” — I didn’t get that vibe.

VAUGHN They always pitted Katy Perry and I against each other: “Who do you think is hotter?” That would be a question they asked the boys on Warped Tour in video promos and stuff.

VICTORIA ASHER, 32, OF COBRA STARSHIP I definitely loved the power I had of being one of the few girls on tour. You would be allowed to cut in front of the long food lines and nobody had a problem with it.

Although the numbers have improved, few women have headlined Warped Tour over the years. How much did you notice that?

BRIDGET REGAN, 42, OF FLOGGING MOLLY Obviously you’d have to be blind not to notice that.

JENNY STILLWAGGON RADESKY, 40, OF THE SMOOTHS I was one of seven women that year. And three of the other women were on the tour bus with me, merch sellers. I remember feeling one day like, “Can I interact with other females, please?”

BRETT ANDERSON, 38, OF THE DONNAS It was literally no different than any other day, tour, show, place, anything. It wasn’t like the Warped Tour was any less women than anything else.

KARINA DENIKÉ OF DANCE HALL CRASHERS We didn’t feel intimidated. It felt like you have 300 older brothers protecting you, in some ways.

JULIETTE LEWIS, 45 I got the list right here. Fall Out Boy, Flogging Molly, Coheed and Cambria, Bad Religion, My Chemical Romance, NOFX, Simple Plan, Story of the Year. I’m trying to find the girls. Where the [expletive]?

TATIANA DEMARIA OF TAT I’ve found Warped to be very welcoming to women. For every 100 bands that apply to do Warped Tour, only 10 bands have females in them.

DONITA SPARKS OF L7 In 1999, we flew a plane over the Warped Tour that said, “Warped Needs More Beaver, Love L7.” It was a politically charged prank to promote our own album.

What do you remember about Joan Jett’s presence on the tour in 2006? (She returns for a few dates this year.)

KELLY OGDEN, 38, OF THE DOLLYROTS We met Joan Jett. I was like, “Just wanted to give you our new record, we’re the Dollyrots.” She was like, “I know, I watch your band all the time.”

SHIRA LEIGH YEVIN OF SHIRAGIRL Joan Jett used to ride her bike over and watch all the girl bands. The last day, in Cleveland, we performed “Bad Reputation” together.

JOAN JETT I had my own BMX. You needed a bike to get from stage to stage. A lot of the bands and the crews did that because the stages were far away from each other. As soon as I noticed that, I got a bike, and carried it under the bus in the bay and took it down every day and rode it around. Like camping, kind of.

DANI DOLL, 34, OF MIRACLE DOLLS When we came just for fun, our friends’ band said, “Hey, here’s some passes, you guys want to go backstage and meet Joan Jett?” And we were like, “ Yeah. We want to go backstage and meet Joan Jett.” We went up to her. The guitarist from NOFX was there. He tried to cut in front of us! And Joan Jett said, “Excuse me, I’m talking to these ladies.”

JETT It’s just part of the thing — I want girls to feel comfortable and not intimidated to get up and play.

How did you fight the sexism you faced onstage and off?

THEO KOGAN, 48, OF LUNACHICKS A huge portion of the Blink-182 guys’ audience was teenage girls, and it was an all-ages show and they would say [expletive] like, “Throw us your bras!” I was going onstage and saying, “Hey, girls, don’t do anything those guys tell you!”

DIA FRAMPTON, 30, OF MEG & DIA We’d give somebody a flier to come watch our band and somebody would say, “Oh, you guys gonna show us your breasts?” or something stupid. Meg and I would shrug that off: “It comes with the territory.” You learn, especially now, it’s not O.K. Back then, I was young, I tried to fit in, I didn’t want to be a snotty little girl who makes people feel uncomfortable.

JEANNE WAWRZYNIAK, 39, OF ALL THAT REMAINS Every once in a while I got “Oh, marry me!” But I never got anyone trying to grope me or anyone saying anything super rude.

TAYLOR JARDINE, 28, OF WE ARE THE IN CROWD We had this one band come on our bus. I didn’t have to sing the next day. I remember drinking too much and going, “Oh my God, I’ve got to go to bed.” [A man from the other band] kept grabbing me and making me sit super-close and keeping [his] arm around me — and we had never talked, I never knew this person at all. It was definitely uncomfortable. Thankfully, my guys are very protective. The next morning, I recall the guys going, “They are not welcome on our bus again.”

SYDNEY SIEROTA OF ECHOSMITH It is really hard on Warped Tour to have physical boundaries, because everyone’s so close and it’s so crowded and people are unpredictable. So there were meet-and-greets where somebody would try to touch my butt.

MARIEL LOVELAND OF CANDY HEARTS I was assaulted on Warped Tour. I felt like I had to say something because this person was threatening to ruin my reputation and my position on the tour by making up stuff to get me kicked off. Instead of my team and the people who worked for me being like “We’ll do what we can to make you feel safe” — which Kevin did do — it was “Why did you open your mouth?”

COURTNEY LAPLANTE OF IWRESTLEDABEARONCE I’d just been playing Canadian Legions and stuff. There were a few times I’d come up to the barrier, I’d be so excited to sing at the fans, and someone would just reach out and honk my breasts. And I was like, “What do I do? Do I just punch in that direction?”

ELIZABETH CARENA OF MOTHER FEATHER I was going backstage to help another artist do his makeup for his show and I was walking by, and Waka Flocka Flame shouted out, “Hey, your booty’s hanging out!” I thought it was funny! He didn’t catcall me.

ANN COURTNEY OF MOTHER FEATHER It was a “heads-up, girl!”

CARENA More like a shout-out.

What did playing on the Warped Tour teach you about touring and yourself?

ALEXIA RODRIGUEZ, 30, OF EYES SET TO KILL What did I learn? Wear sunscreen.

FRANCHESKA PASTOR, 20, OF BAD SEED RISING I loved it because it was dirty, it was grungy, it was gross, it was very aggressive — which are the terms I use to describe myself.

LOVELAND As a musician, I wouldn’t let my daughter go without me, absolutely not. But as a fan, it’s fun.

JESS BOWEN, 28, OF THE SUMMER SET I was super sad when I heard that it was going to be the last year. I have a family at Warped Tour. When I go to Warped Tour, I kind of feel the most comfortable. I feel myself.

ALICIA SOLO, 25, OF BEAUTIFUL BODIES It’s like getting a Purple Heart for the music industry. If you can get through Warped Tour, you can do anything.

How 23 Years of Warped Tour Changed America

Please try again

warped tour experience

After almost a quarter of a century, and having showcased upwards of 1700 bands, Warped Tour as we know it will come to an end when summer 2018 does. For the most mainstream of Americans who never attended, the tour always looked like an outlier -- a noisy summertime day out for the same kids that shopped at Hot Topic, wore too much eyeliner, and learned HTML by editing their MySpace profiles. Truthfully though, Warped Tour's impact on mainstream pop culture was enormous.

warped tour experience

Warped Tour started out scrappy. It was 1995, pop punk was just starting to explode out of the underground -- thanks to Green Day's major label debut, Dookie -- and founder Kevin Lyman , having spent three years working on the Lollapalooza tour, recognized a gap in the festival market. That first Warped was 25 dates -- a breeze for bands and crews who later got used to the jaunt going on for twice as long. No one could foresee back then just how big -- or long-running -- this juggernaut would become.

While Warped's biggest impact has been taking underground culture and smearing it across America in broad daylight every summer, what is so often forgotten is that this was also the venue used by the likes of Katy Perry and Eminem to launch their careers to wider audiences. It's where Sonny Moore started out (in a band named From First to Last ) before he metamorphosed into EDM megastar, Skrillex . It's where No Doubt spent their summer the year before they exploded on a global scale.

warped tour experience

Dominic Davi , Oakland-based bassist of  Tsunami Bomb , has been attending Warped since 1995 and playing it since 2001. "It's so easy to forget now," he says, "but when it started, and for a long time into it, the bands Warped Tour was assembling did not get played on the radio. They were not featured on festival lineups. Kevin Lyman helped shine a light onto all these bands that were drawing various amounts on their own, but together could fill a festival. That took a lot of vision."

"In the end," Davi continues, "Warped launched all these careers and was directly responsible for the punk rock explosion that happened in the early 2000s. That's quite a feat."

Warped Tour, especially in its earliest years, acted this way, year upon year, launching artists out of obscurity and into the eyeline of the mainstream. Blink 182, a band that was long considered too crude and provocative for mainstream success, appeared on three out of the four Warpeds between 1996 and 1999. It's no coincidence that by 2000, they were one of the biggest bands in the country.

Not only did Warped change how punk rock was treated by mainstream music culture, it had an indelible impact on the lives of the thousands of people who lived and worked on the tour over the years, some of whom came back annually, without fail. Along the way, it also helped to further unify a nationwide community of punks, rebels, and renegades.

Dominic Davi compares spending a summer on the tour to "running away with the circus." Photographer Lisa Johnson , whose work documenting Warped Tour has been featured on the covers of several official compilations, as well as in the book, Misfit Summer Camp: 20 Years on the Road With Vans , elaborates: "Warped Tour is a place where seemingly anything is possible. Utopia. Hard work and happiness, plus some fun in the sun. There is just always something magic in the air."

warped tour experience

The unique spirit of Warped is precisely why hundreds of people have stepped up, year after year, to work in unbearably high temperatures, notoriously dusty environs, facing parking lot after parking lot with few views of the outside world (unless you count the occasional midnight trip to Wal-Mart) for weeks on end.

It's difficult to fathom why anybody would want to spend an entire summer in those conditions -- until you actually do it. In 2006, I joined Warped Tour for five days to write a story for a British rock magazine. Somehow, five days turned into seven weeks. I skipped my flight home to sell merch for one of the bands I had met along the way, and had zero regrets about hitting 'pause' on the rest of my life to do so.

For thousands of us, Warped has always been that way -- once you get caught in its vortex, it's hard to extricate yourself from it. "It's this huge production," Davi says, "with so many moving parts. It's hard work. You are moving all day. I think you have to be a particular personality to love that life. I always did."

The video below that Lisa Johnson took at a backstage party in 2014, effectively sums up the hilarity, unified chaos, and good-natured anarchy of Warped Tour (and also why the nightly after-show barbecues have become the stuff of legend). Take into account that the people you see in this clip are the people working the tour -- crew members, band members, merch people, stage hands. Work days may be long and conditions may sometimes be hard, but on the best nights, this is what happens once the ticket-buying public leaves:

There's no doubting that in recent years Warped Tour has, to some degree at least, lost its niche, while also weathering some damaging storms. "In many ways," Davi notes, "I think when the bands on the tour became bands that the radio and MTV embraced, it became harder to preserve that core exclusivity and unique feeling that Warped Tour had. At first it made the tour bigger, but having to chase the trends and adapt to bands with more exposure, I think made it more difficult to make the tour a special experience. By trying to please everyone they had a harder time pleasing anyone."

The summer tour's time might be drawing to a close, but Warped promises to live on in other capacities: there will be some sort of 25th anniversary celebration, and the first Warped Rewind at Sea cruise just happened last month. More than that though, the tour leaves behind a legacy. It impacted a couple of generations of punk, emo and hardcore bands, as well as their fans. Warped brought a newfound acceptance of alternative culture to all corners of the country. It was a confidence builder for teens who felt alienated in their suburban high schools; it was a training camp for small bands, and a springboard for larger ones; and, for a long while there, it fundamentally changed the fabric of alternative music in America.

Vans Warped Tour announces 25th anniversary locations + dates

warped tour experience

Following the announcement that 2018 would be the last cross-country run, the Vans Warped Tour headed out for a final summer of music, philanthropy, and community.

Looking back on it now, Vans Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman shares, “It was truly an honor to do a final cross-country run of Warped in 2018; to see fans from all eras of the tour come out for a day to celebrate an event that meant so much to them. I walked away from the final show with a true sense that the Vans Warped Tour became the community I had always hoped for.”

This summer, the venerable tour will be providing a smaller scale experience – but for those able to attend the festival locations, it will still be full of surprises.

Fans can expect the heart of the Warped Tour experience to be intact, but on a much larger scale over 2 full days.  50+ bands across multiple stages, extreme sports ranging from skateboarding to motocross, and an exhibit of art that has come out of the tour’s history.

“With the [Vans Warped Tour] 25th Anniversary events, we want to bring the atmosphere of a classic Warped Tour show, but on a scale that our fans simply could not get with a national tour “ explains Lyman, “The bands, the special attractions, everything – we want to bring back elements that have made the Warped Tour, Warped Tour, over the past 25 years.”

The individual band lineup and special attractions for each of the Vans Warped Tour presented by Journeys 25th Anniversary events, will be announced Friday, March 1st.  Pre-sales will begin on Monday February 28th and tickets will be available to all on Friday, March 1st.

For many, this announcement comes as no surprise; the Vans Warped Tour 25th Anniversary was alluded to in Lyman’s original statement about the end of the Vans Warped Tour:

“ ’The enduring spirit of the Vans Warped Tour remains as bright as ever, continuing to inspire creativity and ambition in new and exciting ways as we prepare for a 25th anniversary celebration in 2019.’ ”

For more information, fans can visit – https://fanlink.to/VWT25

The Vans Warped Tour has partnered with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to create a special new exhibit, Forever Warped: 25 Years of Vans Warped Tour, celebrating a quarter-century of the iconic traveling music festival. This comprehensive exhibit documents the history of the tour from its inception in 1995 through the final cross-country run in 2018.

Visitors will see artifacts from quintessential Warped bands and breakout artists from the tour’s lengthy run, including instruments played by members of Fall Out Boy, No Doubt, Rancid and Reel Big Fish and stage clothing worn by Joan Jett and Ice-T. The exhibit will also present iconic items from the very first Warped Tour, as well as from 2018’s final touring run. And much more!

On Saturday, June 8th, 2019, the Forever Warped will kick off with a special opening concert featuring bands from across the 24-year history of the tour, a mini vert ramp, and more!

JUNE 29 + 30 • ATLANTIC CITY, NJ • ATLANTIC CITY BEACH

Set to a backdrop of sun, sand and surf, the Vans Warped Tour will celebrate its 25th Anniversary with a special two-day extravaganza on the beach in Atlantic City on Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30, 2019. Atlantic City will be one of only three cities to host the Warped Tour and the only one on the East Coast.

The Vans Warped Tour’s 25th Anniversary event features 50+ bands across multiple stages over the two-day event, extreme sports ranging from skateboarding to motocross, and an exhibit of Warped Tour art that has come out of the tour’s history.

“We’re thrilled to host the only East Coast celebration of Vans Warped Tour’s 25th Anniversary on the Atlantic City Beach,” said Geoff Gordon, Live Nation Philadelphia Regional President. “Warped Tour was meant to take place on the surf and sand, so we welcome fans from across North America to experience this unforgettable weekend with us in Atlantic City.”

JULY 20 + 21 • MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA • SHORELINE AMPHITHEATRE

After a sold out show at the Shoreline Amphitheatre for the final cross-country run, the Vans Warped Tour makes a triumphant return to the Bay Area for a special 25th Anniversary 2-day event on Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21 at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA.

It’s only fitting that Warped Tour would choose the Bay Area’s as it became an instant second home to the event that got its start in the punk community of Southern California.

“I think probably close to half the bands on the first Warped Tour had some tie to the Bay Area,” remembers Lyman, “there was the up-and-coming band The Deftones, and then of course the Fat Wreck [Chords] roster – Good Riddance, No Use For A Name, Face to Face, and Tilt.”

Warped Tour: 9 People of Color Share Their Experiences With the Music Festival

By Angel E. Fraden

Image may contain Human Person Sunglasses Accessories Accessory Clothing Apparel Crowd Shorts and Festival

The Vans Warped Tour celebrates its final cross-country voyage this summer, and while popularity has declined over the last few years, a certain magic still persists. I attended the punk rock music festival as a teenager, both in North Carolina (2010) and Texas (2011), and each Warped helped me evolve in ways I’m only now beginning to recognize.

As a queer teenager of color, there weren’t a lot of public spaces I could occupy comfortably and with total emotional honesty. My 2010 Warped Tour had me thinking about this for the very first time, simply because I’d never been around so many people who so enthusiastically praised inclusiveness and individuality. No one looked uncomfortable at Warped Tour. It was a place where most people could be totally and unapologetically themselves. I met fellow black and brown kids my age dressed in exciting colors and form-fitting outfits, there to rock out with their favorite bands. Here, I was somehow normal, and that blew my mind in the best way.

Last Saturday, after a seven-year hiatus from the festival, I rode a bus from Brooklyn to Wantagh , Long Island, to witness the magic once more. Warped Tour is a time warp through the last two and a half decades worth of counterculture and alternative-punk mall gear. No matter how many years pass, if you come back you’ll certainly feel like you’d never left.

Simple Plan, 3OH!3, and Sharptooth all headlined the leg of Warped Tour in Wantagh. I cried at least two tears when Pierre Bouvier took to the stage with his Canadian pop-punk group and opened the last set of the day with their eponymous hit single “I’d Do Anything.” Despite the love interest at the center of its lyrics, Pierre seemed to be singing about our collective sadness over losing Warped Tour .

Beyond saying goodbye to a music festival that showcased acts big and small from the worlds of punk and alternative rock, the closing of Warped Tour also feels like a farewell to a place that embraced fans from different walks of life. Looking back at my first experiences where I met peers similar to me, I interviewed young Warped Tour attendees between approximately 22 sets at the event. I spoke with queer people and people of color, specifically, in an attempt to further dissect and describe my own. Here’s what they said.

Amina Farrula, 20

Teen Vogue : What's your favorite part about Warped Tour?

AF: Everything. The whole environment.

TV : How long have you been into this kind of music?

AF: I used to be more into it than I am now. I'm only here because it's the last one.

Aaliyah Harris, 17

TV : How old were you when you first started going to Warped Tour?

AH: I was 12. I felt really welcome here. At first, I felt intimidated but then I got casually into the scene, and now it feels like home every time I come. Being at Warped Tour is like being at a family reunion, except with music you actually enjoy and just happiness ( laughs ).

Aliyah Cameron, 26

TV : What has been your favorite part about this experience? Did anything surprise you?

AC: The people. Nothing has really surprised me. It's kind of exactly what I thought it would be, just free and people in different clothing choices just not giving a f*ck.

Garett Rive, 18

TV : So this is your first Warped Tour?

GR: Yeah, I got dragged by my friend.

TV : Are you into this kind of music?

GR: I'm actually very old school. I was born in 2000 and grew up listening to my parents' music, ‘90s hip-hop, Biggie. But I like this too.

TV : Is there a band you're excited to see?

GR: I'm just here to listen to every single band, and eventually I'm gonna go home and listen to every single album.

TV : Has anything surprised you about this first experience at Warped Tour?

GR: I expected to see a lot more mosh pits. Everyone is somewhat the same, so everyone gets each other. I like to see that. I like to see everybody getting along.

Lucette W., 18

TV : What's been the biggest shock you've experienced at Warped Tour this year?

LW: I don't know, I feel like in Canada, when I was growing up, it seemed a little less commercial. I was kind of surprised by how many kiosks there were. And I also forgot how, like, white it was.

TV : Where in Canada are you from? LW: Calgary. It's where Tegan and Sara are from.

Jacketta Collins, 25

TV : How old were you for your first Warped Tour?

JC: I think I was around 16.

TV : When you were 16 and first exploring this space, did you feel intimidated at all by how strange everyone looks and how intense some of it all is?

JC: It was super overwhelming, it was more of like a shock because back at that age I was living in the Bronx, so there wasn't such a large number of people who were like that. Also everyone was much older, so when I was 16 everyone was like in their 20s. Now it's different.

JH: Motionless In White. They're still my favorite band.

TV : Did you feel intimidated at first?

JH: It was a little jarring at first, but the more and more I saw these people and how they were, I realized that these people are just like me. I have nothing to worry about. I can show myself off and do whatever I want.

Junior Lucena, 25

TV : Have you been to Warped Tour before?

JL: This is my first unfortunately. And my last.

TV : When you were a teenager did you identify with this kind of music?

JL: Absolutely. I did, which is why it's so nostalgic to come here. Being that it's my first time at the Warped Tour and it's been like ten years since I touched this kind of music, I'm just like, wow this is great. I saw a couple of bands that are still playing from that time, I'm like this is amazing.

And I put myself into a band [crowd] that I didn't know, the newer bands. I put myself into that crowd and I see the kids which are a younger group. I'm like, that easily could've been me if I could've gone to Warped Tour back then, so I enjoy that energy. It reminded me of my younger self at 16 or 17 and enjoying senseless music that just made you feel good.

Keilani Lebron, 17

TV : What's the main appeal of Warped Tour for you?

KL: Right now, I'll say meeting new people that listen to the same genre as you. You get to meet great friends, I actually met like five friends last year from here. It's really accepting. No one looks at you in a weird way, whether you're gay, straight or bi. It's like a small community and once a year you get to experience it all like a family. It's an experience you don't want to miss, basically. It's really worth the money to come.

Reasons For Ending

After more than two decades of success, the Warped Tour officially came to an end in 2018. The decision to end the festival was not solely based on financial reasons, as some may assume. Co-founder Kevin Lyman cited fan elitism and the loss of a sense of community as major contributors to this decision.

Despite its enormous impact, the festival faced challenges in recent years. With the rise of digital music platforms and changing consumer behaviors, the traditional touring model became less sustainable. My Warped Tour Experience

I went to the Vans Warped Tour in Shakopee, Minnesota this year. Before going, I was excited and a little skeptical about how I would (or wouldn’t) like it. The music that was listed for the event isn’t what I normally listen to. My previous article was about what I planned on bringing to Warped Tour. This one is about what actually happened.

I did bring everything on my list. Everything came in handy, especially the drawstring backpack, water bottle, and the sunscreen. It was sunny and in the mid-eighties all day long, which was a little overwhelming at a couple of points throughout the day.

We watched a total of twelve bands between 11AM and 8PM. Some, I knew and could name the group and some songs. Some, I knew a song, but I couldn’t name the band. Others, I didn’t know at all. My favorites of the day were definitely Good Charlotte, 3OH!3, We The Kings, and The Maine. I’d never heard of The Maine, but they were hilarious and really got the crowd involved during their 30-minute performance. During We The Kings, we were in the middle of a crowd of hundreds of people. There was jumping and crouching and dancing. Even though I’d already had two liters of water by this point, I got dizzy and had to go sit down, unfortunately missing most of “Check Yes Juliet” from the band’s set.

There was a row of porta-potties along the edge of the event space. I never had to wait in line to use the bathroom, but the line for refilling water was another story. I spent half an hour waiting in line to refill my liter water bottle at one point. I drank an amazing 4.5 liters of water during Warped Tour. I found waiting in line to be the perfect time to reapply sunscreen. I put sunscreen on at least once every hour throughout the day, but I still ended up sunburnt in the end.

I think one of the best parts of the whole Warped Tour experience was the people. Most of these people have funky colored hair or lots of piercings. They were the people that didn’t necessarily have a table to sit at for lunch in high school. Outcasts. Different. And I loved it. These people, who normally get judged for just being them, got to freely be who they were the entire day. The self-confidence in the crowd was spectacular. I remember at one point, one of the bands we were listening to was trying to get the crowd more involved. “Dance like crazy,” the singer said, “because we are all losers here anyway.” It made me, and I believe everyone around me, feel great about who I was. They would say things like “you are perfect the way you are”. We believed them. I spent the entire day and night after we left feeling better about myself and who I am than I think I have ever felt. My confidence was through the roof and over the moon.

Another interesting part of the day were the messages groups or even bands were trying to promote. I listened to a band talk about teen and young adult suicide rates. I listened to a girl at a booth tell some girls about a call line they could call if they ever didn’t feel good about themselves. The positive messages and energy during the whole event was insane.

All-in-all, I didn’t think for a minute that going to Warped Tour was going to be half as amazing of an experience as it actually was. It wasn’t just about listening to bands play music all day. It was about being around people that were like you, enjoying something you all have in common. It helped you see that at least in your music taste, you were not alone. Everyone was so helpful and friendly the entire day. Warped Tour is definitely something I will be going to again. I highly suggest that every young adult experience this event.

Rock band recounts its Warped Tour experience

After playing on The Warped Tour, America’s largest travelling music festival, the rock band Altessa is seeking to grow their audience and to refine their sound.

American River College student Julian Grenz plays bass in the Sacramento based rock band.

Altessa was voted to be included in on the line up for the 2013 Warped Tour, which Grenz described as a “punk rock summer camp, in a way.”

Popular musicians such as Katy Perry credit performing in the festival for helping them to succeed in the industry.

Altessa is rounded out by three other guitarists: Kendall Schoenfeld, Leonard Gutay, who also plays the drums, and Richie Gomes, who also does vocals.

“Warped Tour has always been a dream for me when I first started playing in bands,” said Gutay. “Just the whole experience of promoting and eventually playing was completely surreal.”

(Story continues below)

“When we first heard we made it, we were practically partying. Then it became this big stressful thing for a while,” said Gomes. “Warped Tour is maybe the only place in the world where you can play in front of over 300 people who’ve never heard of you and have them be genuinely interested in your sound and music … The whole experience gives you a sense of ‘this is what I’m doing this for.’”

Altessa got together several years ago when its members were still in high school. Lately the band has been working on its sound.

“What we’ve done is we’ve gotten songs recorded with Erik Ron down in L.A. He’s worked with a couple of bands like Panic at the Disco!,” said Grenz. “We brought in the songs we wanted to record and we re-arranged them, defined our sound a bit more and now we have three songs that we have fully recorded.”

Altessa’s first single, “Sara,” was uploaded to YouTube in February, where it has garnered over 35,000 views.

Grenz said that the band has had the opportunity to travel since band members have moved away from Sacramento.

“I’ve been in Altessa for two, maybe three years now,” said Grenz. “We recently got out of town to Southern California – Santa Ana. We also played in the Bay Area as well.”

Grenz said that in the immediate future, the band is working on reaching as many fans as possible.

“We’ve had fans from across the state ask if we can come to their town,” said Grenz. “It’s going to take a while with everyone living off a college student’s budget but we’re all working, saving up working on getting ourselves out there more and releasing more music.”

All The Blink Things

All The Blink Things is the east coast's most authentic blink-182 tribute band! All The Blink Things undoubtedly delivers the most authentic blink-182 experience performing all the hits while capturing your favorite pop punk band's nostalgic rise to fame. Without question, Blink 182 is the most influential band of modern pop punk. Fast, catchy songs, crude humor and raw energy make for an unforgettable live performance. All The Blink Things performs ALL the hits and ALL the fan favorites using the same raw energy and on stage antics to re-create the awesome experience that is Blink.

DoOkie came to fruition Out of the valley of western MA / quickly making a name for themselves and becoming a highly sought after Green Day tribute show, bringing the look, the energy, and most importantly the sound.

Longtime fans at heart, the quartet gathered their gear and loaded up their own bookmobile to share a Green Day experience anywhere and everywhere they could. Their travels have brought them near and far, performing at major venues and events up and down the east coast and beyond.

In 2009, DoOkie was recruited by the game developers of Rock Band: Green Day to stand in place of Green Day themselves and provide the motion capture for the digitized Billie, Mike and Tre. This honor will be forever listed in the game credits as “Team LSF”. But from here on out, any time someone pops the game into their console and chugs the first chords of Basket Case, the body motions and antics of the DoOkie boys will live on forever.

Fast forward to 2022, a rested and rejuvenated DoOkie is back and ready to bring their lively, authentic homage to the Bay Area trio to Green Day fans young and old(ish) once again.

We hope you have the time of your life!
