2014 tour championship

Billy Horschel won't be on the American Ryder Cup team in two weeks, which is unfortunate because he's the hottest golfer on the planet right now. What was largely an underwhelming and middling season for Horschel finished as the best of his career, thanks to a remarkable run through the postseason to win the FedEx Cup.

Horschel is a streaky player — we knew this already and saw it last year when he had a run of top 10s before getting his first career victory at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He started this postseason at No. 69 in the FedEx Cup standings, so a spot beyond the first two playoff legs was not a given. But he started this streak in Boston, finishing with a top five at the Deutsche Bank Championship to position himself for a trip all the way to Atlanta. The result could have been better than a T2 in Boston for Horschel, who stood in the 18th fairway down a shot with a better than good chance to make a birdie and force a playoff with Chris Kirk. There was even a slight chance at eagle to win it outright if he hit a good shot, but what followed was his worst swing of the year — a ghastly chunk that came some 60 yards short of the green and landed in the front half of a hazard.

It was about as bad a shot as you can see from the middle of the fairway on the last hole of a PGA Tour event.

But Horschel was undeterred, saying it was his worst swing of the week but not a "choke" because he wasn't sitting on the lead. There were no after effects from that ignominious end, as Horschel cruised to his second career win the very next week at the BMW Champinship. At Cherry Hills, there were a few big names that pushed him on Sunday, such as Bubba Watson and Sergio Garcia. But he didn't have to post a low number down the stretch and make some birdies, instead riding his third round 63 and then holding on with pars over the final 18.

That win last week in Denver guaranteed his spot in the top 5 of the FedEx Cup standings for this week's TOUR Championship. That's important because only those top five hold the "control your own destiny" card where a win at the playoffs finale means an automatic FedEx Cup title. And Horschel took immediate advantage of his position, playing in the final pairing all four days at East Lake. He was pushed by some of the best players in the world, and other top five guys like Chris Kirk, Bubba Watson and Rory McIlroy, his playing partner over the final two rounds. The Florida Gator did not relent, holding off the No. 1 player in the world and the summer's hottest golfer during the hottest streak of his career.

Sunday's round was a tidy 2-under 68. McIlroy fell off the pace and the year's most consistent player, Rickie Fowler, was out of it early. Instead, Jim Furyk emerged as the top challenger, forcing Horschel to hit his spots all the way through the back nine. A birdie putt at the 15th broke a tie with Furyk, and then a bombed-in clutch par save seemed to lock it up on the 16th green.

NBC's Roger Maltbie said he had the sense that a "star is born," and there's no arguing Horschel is one of the best young American players in the world. He'll probably continue these streaky bursts for the next decade or so to be one of McIlroy's contemporary challengers at the game's biggest events.

But even if he's never heard from again, he's now got enough money to live many happy lives. In addition to  pocketing the $10 million grand prize , he won $3,477,333 between the two victories and the runner-up in Boston. So that's almost $13.5 million in three weeks.

His career earnings prior to Sunday were $7,895,691. Given the incredible run, the Gator alum just had to do the chomp in front of the largely UGA crowd at Atlanta's East Lake Golf Club. He was loudly booed, although nothing like the  Liverpool fans giving it to Rory after he said he was a Man United fan at The Open.

It was a strong month for McIlroy, Furyk, Kirk, and Fowler, but no one came close to Horschel's sustained form. He ends the season with 12 straight rounds in the 60s, an absurd mark we may not see for awhile in the Tour's playoffs. Here are your  final FedEx Cup standings the final results from the TOUR Championship:

Tour Championship 2014: A preview of this week's FedEx Cup finale at East Lake

By Dave Tindall

Tuesday 9 September 2014 23:22, UK

Who will win this week's Tour Championship?

The 2014 PGA Tour season reaches a climax this weekend when the end-of-season Tour Championship takes place in Georgia.

For the 14th time in its history, East Lake plays host as the top 29 golfers (Dustin Johnson is absent) battle it out for the FedEx Cup trophy and the monstrous $10m bonus fund.

Live PGA Tour Golf

All 29 players in the field can strike the jackpot but only the top five in the standings - Chris Kirk, Billy Horschel, Bubba Watson, Rory McIlroy and Hunter Mahan - have their destiny in their own hands.

For sixth-ranked Jimmy Walker, a win would virtually seal the $10m although a solo second from Kirk would deny him. Walker could also finish second and have a mathematical chance of landing the FedEx Cup.

For 29th-ranked Gary Woodland, it's a massive long-shot. He'd have to win and hope Kirk finishes tied 27th or worse. Even then, a high finish for any of the players ranked second to sixth would deny him.

Opened 110 years ago, this famous Atlanta course fell into disrepair not long after staging the 1963 Ryder Cup and was only restored to its former glories in the mid-1990s.

East Lake, the course where legendary American amateur Bobby Jones learned the game, returned to the PGA Tour schedule in 1998 when it staged the Tour Championship for the first time.

At this time of year, fatigue (mental and physical) must be a huge factor given the long and sustained run of big events over the last few months. Plenty of players have mentioned their lack of a break and it's pretty easy to see the evidence (Rory McIlroy's four-putts last week an obvious example). So, taking into account the 13 weeks of golf that started with the US Open in mid June, here's how many times the field have teed it up during that period. We'll start with the most over-golfed:

11 Patrick Reed 10 Hunter Mahan, Webb Simpson, Bill Haas, Morgan Hoffman 9 Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Martin Kaymer, Zach Johnson, Jimmy Walker, Jason Day, Chris Kirk, Hideki Matsuyama, Gary Woodland, Kevin Na, Russell Henley, Brendon Todd 8 Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Matt Kuchar, Billy Horschel, Ryan Palmer, Geoff Ogilvy, John Senden 7 Adam Scott, Cameron Tringale

It's fair to say Adam Scott enjoys playing in Georgia given that he won the 2013 Masters there and this very tournament in 2006.

As the stats above show, Scott (along with Cameron Tringale) is also the most lightly-raced of the 29 competitors taking part.

That extra freshness must help and given that we can see him go off at 14/1 in majors, the 10/1 to beat just 28 jaded rivals seems a decent price.

2014 tour championship

Justin Rose must have a decent chance of giving himself the perfect send-off for the Ryder Cup by taking victory.

The Englishman has finished sixth and second on his last two appearances in this event so this course - with its bermuda greens and emphasis on ball-striking - is clearly a great fit for him.

Rose, who got hot with back-to-back wins over the summer, has gone a little quiet since but it won't take much for it to all click again and, once more, he's at the sort of price, 16/1, that isn't unusual to see in full-field events.

Bubba Watson was fifth here in 2012, the season when he won his first Masters.

So, having won the Green Jacket again earlier this April, Bubba might make it a happy return to Georgia.

Fellow left-handers Mike Weir and Phil Mickelson have won at both Augusta and East Lake so Bubba could make it a hat-trick after closing with three 66s to finish runner-up at the BMW Championship last week.

Finally, Tringale is the biggest price of anyone this week at 110/1.

But in a field this small it's worth taking given his relatively light schedule compared to other rivals and the fact that he went to college at nearby Georgia Tech.

He was runner-up at The Barclays - the first of these four play-off events - so can clearly thrive in this company.

3pts win Adam Scott at 10/1

2pts e.w. Justin Rose at 16/1 (1/4 1,2,3,4)

3pts win Bubba Watson at 16/1

1pt e.w. Cameron Tringale at 110/1 (1/4 1,2,3,4)

TOUR Championship

Billy Horschel has 36-hole lead

  • Associated Press

ATLANTA -- Billy Horschel showed why he might be the hottest player in golf at the moment with another 4-under 66 on Friday in the Tour Championship. It was his 10th straight round in the 60s. He already has a victory and a runner-up finish in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

And now he gets to take on the best player in golf.

Rory McIlroy rode three big putts and one bizarre break -- a tee shot landed in a spectator's pocket -- on his way to a 65 that left him two shots behind and put him in the final group at East Lake going into the homestretch of the FedEx Cup.

At stake for both of them -- along with Chris Kirk -- is a shot at the $10 million bonus.

"I'm a guy that when I feel good about my game, I've got some confidence that I'm going to figure out some way to play well and post a number," Horschel said.

That he has done.

Horschel is 35 under par in his last 10 rounds. He was runner-up at the Deutsche Bank Championship two weeks ago, when he squandered a shot to at least get into a playoff by chunking a 6-iron into a hazard. And he followed that with a victory in the BMW Championship at Cherry Hills.

And now he has a pair of 66s, putting him at 8-under 132 at East Lake.

McIlroy made his only bogey with a buried lie at the face of a bunker on No. 4, causing him to blast out sideways. He bounced back with birdies, and poured it on at the end of his round with a 12-foot par save, a 20-foot birdie and a 25-foot birdie.

And then there was his par on the 14th, which looked ordinary only on paper. His tee shot drifted right into the pine trees, clattered around and dropped straight down. No one knew where it went until a fan realized it had fallen into the front pocket of his shorts.

PGA Tour rules official Robby Ware made sure the fan had not moved, and McIlroy was given a free drop under Rule 19-1-a.

Retrieving the ball? McIlroy wasn't going there.

"I know how sweaty my pockets are. I'm not going into anyone else's," McIlroy said. "I need to stop hitting it off line. Things happen there."

McIlroy was joined by Jason Day , who made bogey on his last hole for a 67; and Kirk, who made two bogeys on the back nine that offset a run of four straight birdies around the turn for a 68.

Kirk, Horschel and McIlroy are among the top five seeds in the FedEx Cup, meaning a victory would guarantee the $10 million bonus.

McIlroy seized the No. 1 ranking by winning the British Open, a World Golf Championship and the PGA Championship in successive starts. He was the top seed going into the FedEx Cup, though because the points are reset for East Lake, the 25-year-old from Northern Ireland always knew it would come down to the Tour Championship.

As much as he wants to end a great year on a high note, McIlroy appears to be playing with no concerns.

"Before coming into these FedEx Cup playoffs ... it was going to be a great season, anyway," he said. "I wanted to cap it off in style, and I've given myself a chance to do that over the next two days. I'm going into this week with nothing to lose. I'm the one that's got the two majors this year. I'm the one that's had the great season. Those are the guys that are trying to cap off a great season for themselves.

"No matter what happens over the weekend, it's going to be OK," he said. "But I still want to win this thing."

McIlroy and Horschel first mixed it up seven years ago when they were amateurs at the Walker Cup. Horschel beat him in singles on the 18th hole, and the next morning teamed with Rickie Fowler in a foursomes win over McIlroy and Jonny Caldwell. Horschel was shouting and pumping fists, as he always does, and it rubbed McIlroy the wrong way. In the final singles session, McIlroy beat him 4 and 2.

That was a long time ago. Neither harbors a grudge.

McIlroy has gone on to win four majors at age 25 -- only Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Bobby Jones have done that -- while Horschel picked up his second career win last week. They last played together as pros at the Honda Classic this year, where McIlroy had rounds of 66-63 and Horschel missed the cut.

"He's a good buddy," Horschel said. "If I happen to come out on top and we're battling out these next two rounds, that means a lot. The guy won three straight events in a row, and two of them happened to be majors. I think that's pretty impressive. He's at that stage where when you're able to go toe to toe with one of the best players and the No. 1 ranked player in the world and you're able to come out on top, that gives me a lot of confidence."

It pays to play well on the PGA Tour. Just ask  this week’s winner, Scottie Scheffler .

The 27-year-old won the 2024 RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, on Monday after play was suspended for two-and-a-half hours on Sunday due to inclement weather and then later for darkness. The win is the world No. 1’s fourth in his last five starts and 10th of his PGA Tour career.

Last week Scheffler won $3.6 million at the Masters and he earned another $3.6 million for his win this week in the PGA Tour’s latest big-money signature event. Sahith Theegala, who finished three shots back in second, banked a hefty $2.18 million for his runner-up showing. Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark, who finished T-3 at 15 under, each banked $1.18 million.

With $20 million up for grabs, check out how much money each PGA Tour player earned this week at the 2024 RBC Heritage in Hilton Head.

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (AP) — Nelly Korda couldn’t have imagined the incredible run she’s put together this season while at home recovering from a blood clot that required surgery in 2022.

“Because obviously then I was just more scared for my health,” she said. “Competing was kind of on the back seat. I was not thinking about competing at all. But I think all of the sad times and the health scares that I have gone through have made me who I am today.”

Fully healthy now, Korda is seemingly unstoppable. The world’s No. 1 player hasn’t lost a tournament since January, and now she’s a two-time major champion.

Korda etched her name in the LPGA Tour record books Sunday, winning her record-tying fifth straight tournament with a two-stroke victory in the Chevron Championship.

Korda joins Nancy Lopez (1978) and Annika Sorenstam (2004-05) as the only players to win five consecutive LPGA events. Her previous major victory was in 2021 at the Women’s PGA Championship.

“It’s been an amazing feeling these past couple weeks knowing that I can go on this stretch and that if I stay in my bubble and I keep golf in a sense simple and let it flow, then I can have so, so much fun out here,” she said.

Korda shot a 3-under 69 in the final to outlast Maja Stark of Sweden, who birdied her final two holes to shoot 69 and pull within one. Korda stayed aggressive on the par-5 18th, easily clearing the lake in front of the green and setting up an easy up-and-down birdie for a two-shot victory.

She had a four-day total of 13-under 275 at Carlton Woods.

Korda nearly aced the par-3 17th , with her tee shot hitting the hole and hopping in the air before settling within 10 feet. She settled for par to maintain her two-shot lead.

Korda wowed the large crowd, which followed her throughout the day, by chipping into the wind for birdie on the par-4 10th hole to take a four-stroke lead. The 25-year-old raised her club above her head with one hand and pumped her fist after the ball rolled into the hole.

Her parents — former Australian Open tennis champion Petr Korda and Regina Rajchrtova — beamed as she was presented with the trophy.

“She had a difficult ’22 and ’23 in certain ways,” Petr Korda said. “She did not win a tournament in ’23 and some things probably made her humble and (she) put a lot of work into where she is right now. Without the work and commitment, she would not be here. So seeing that, I’m very happy.”

Korda’s older sister, Jessica, is a six-time LPGA winner who’s taking a break from golf after giving birth to her first child.

Korda took home $1.2 million from a purse of $7.9 million, a significant increase from last year’s purse of $5.2 million. That brings her season earnings to $2,424,216 and her career earnings to $11,361,489.

Winners had been jumping into Poppie’s Pond off the 18th green at Mission Hills since 1988, and Korda became the second to do it in Texas by doing a cannonball off a small dock into brown-tinged water. World No. 2 Lilia Vu was first to jump into the pond here after her win last season. Vu withdrew from this year’s tournament before the first round after experiencing “severe discomfort” in her back during warmups.

While still shivering from her post-win plunge Sunday, Korda confirmed she’ll be competing in the JM Eagle LA Championship next week in Los Angeles. She was then asked about the possibility of becoming the first to ever win six straight LPGA tournaments.

“I’m going to enjoy this right now and then I’ll think about that,” she said. “But yeah, it’s been an amazing time. Hopefully keep the streak alive. But I’ve been so grateful to compete week in and week out and get the five in a row, too.”

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is on a similar tear, on his way to a fourth victory in five starts until rain interrupted the final round of the RBC Heritage . He couldn’t help but check in on Korda.

“I actually was checking the scores this afternoon when we were in the rain delay,” he said. “I’m extremely happy for her and proud of her. That’s some pretty special stuff. It’s been a treat to watch.”

Korda entered the last round one shot off the lead after completing the last seven holes of the weather-delayed third round early Sunday morning on a windy and unseasonably cool day. She was wiped out after her big win because she’d been up since 4 a.m. to prepare for the end of the third round.

She birdied two of her first four holes to take the lead. Lauren Coughlin birdied Nos. 13 and 14 to get within two strokes, but bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes put her four behind. She shot a final-round 68 to finish tied for third with Brooke Henderson.

Coughlin got emotional when discussing her best finish in a major.

“It’s really cool to see all of the work that I’ve put in, especially with my putting and my short game, and putting specifically showed off this week, as well,” she said.

Henderson was tied with Korda for second to start the last round after she shot a 64 in the third round to set a scoring record for the tournament since its move from Mission Hills, California, to Texas last year. But the Canadian, who has 13 LPGA wins with two majors, also faltered early in the final round, with a bogey and a double bogey in the first four holes.

Haeran Ryu of South Korea shot a bogey-free 67 to enter the final round leading Korda by one. But the 2023 Rookie of the Year bogeyed the first two holes of the fourth round. She closed with a 74 and finished fifth.

Eighteen-year-old amateur Jasmine Koo provided an unlikely highlight on the 18th hole. Her second shot bounced off the advertising board in the water and back into play. She ended up with a birdie to shoot 71.
