Start your adventure by departing from Darwin and head out to the Mary River Wetlands region onboard Corroboree Billabong Wetland Cruise, a great opportunity to spot a huge range of Top End birdlife, not to mention some apex predators… crocodiles! We journey on to Kakadu National Park visiting the Bowali Visitor Centre which offers a beautiful introduction to the Park’s landscape and wildlife. After some relaxation at camp, we journey north to *Cahills Crossing on the border of Kakadu and Arnhem Land. We will visit one of the best-preserved collections of Aboriginal Rock Art in the world at Ubirr rock upon sunset. This incredibly significant site showcases many styles of Rock Art and allows us to climb up high for a sunset that will blow you away looking out over the Nadab Floodplain. After a big day, we head back to our cozy private camp and prepare dinner together, enjoying an evening with our fellow travellers.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner Accom: Jabiru Campground – Permanent Safari Tents or Bush Swags (communal bathroom facilities) Driving Distance: 420km Hike Distance and Grading: 1km loop Grade 3, flat pathways and a gradual climb up a rock face to the vantage point on top. Requires a minimum moderate fitness and mobility.

We rise and shine early on day 2 and make our way south in Kakadu National Park. Today we’ll spend the day soaking up the spectacular natural beauty of the area, hiking through lush monsoon rainforests, swimming in pristine plunge pools and waterfalls surrounded by steep escarpments and rocky cliffs. We aim to visit one or more of the available waterfalls depending on group physical ability to complete the hike(s). This can include any of the following: Motor Car Falls, Moline Rockhole, Maguk (Barramundi Gorge), or Jim Jim Falls. There are many factors affecting accessibility although your guide will ensure you get the best experience possible. Time permitting, we stop at Burrungkuy (Nourlangie Rock), another indigenous rock art site where archaeologists have uncovered works dating back over 20,000 years old. We explore the evolving social, cultural and environmental changes to the area over time before making our way back to camp for a hearty dinner and a well-earned rest.

An exciting day awaits as we head out of Kakadu National Park and travel towards Litchfield National Park. We spend the afternoon immersed in Litchfield’s natural oasis of waterfalls, spring-fed streams and rugged sandstone escarpments. We’ll spend time in any combination of Buley Rockholes, Wangi Falls or Florence Falls for a refreshing soak in picturesque rock holes and waterfalls. Discover the uniquely impressive Magnetic and Cathedral Termite Mounds before making our way back to Darwin, arriving back to your accommodation at approximately 7:00pm.

The length of walks will be between 2km to 4km each day, often over steep rocky sections and in direct sunlight and high humidity. An approximate 9.5km walk is included in this tour. Embarking on walks will be at the guide’s discretion to ensure the safety of guests. Therefore, a medium/high level of fitness is required and a doctor’s certificate is required for people over 70 years (30-days prior to travel).

Our tours are active adventures that include a fair amount of walking, hiking and water-based activities. Walks can extend to 4 hours duration in warm to hot conditions, so a reasonable level of fitness is required, We don’t expressly set any age restrictions. Our tours are true outback adventure camping. Good health is important but ultimately, it is an open and positive attitude that matters. It is very important that any pre-existing medical conditions are discussed before booking.

Our tours are focused on adventure. This includes 4WD vehicles on rough and rugged dirt tracks, longer hikes and swims. You will get dirty and be challenged. This is not a luxury bus tour.

You can bring up to 15kg of luggage to be stored in our trailer while traveling, we advise you to bring a day pack for access to day-to-day items.

You will be in a 4 x 4 off-road 21-seater vehicle on tour. This is a 4WD vechile.

We actually did 3 day tours with A AT kings. Kakadu, Litchfield and Katherine Gorge. Two were very big days. The guides/drivers never missed a beat. Very knowledgeable and polite, always thinking about their passengers. We originally only booked two before leaving Brisbane but decided to book the third on our last day and were so glad we did. My daughter worked for Flight Centre and said she always booked clientsxwirh AATKings and I can see why. Well done for providing such a great experience.

Was a good trip, was more worried about surviving the drive to  Uluru, then the out back itself,  guide was all over the road reading his itinary. Food was good, there was a vegetarian and gluten free person in our group and the meals they had brought looked good..On one of the hikes there were no gluten free snacks avibale the guide must have forgot I get that hard remember  to cater to everyone. Be aware that food is provided but not nessacerly made for you our group had to cook and clean 95% of our meals,  witch is not so bad if you are expecting that, It's a nice way to interact with your group. Make sure you charge your phone at camp # 1 camp two really has no way to. Guide was a bit frantic in my opinion. Professional but frantic. Ps no toilets on bus but he does make frequent stops.He is very knowledgeable about the area.Expect early morning wake ups, we got up at 4am and 3am the following day to beat the heat. Which is quite understandable,and worth it, because it gets hot at about 9am.All and all it was a wonderful trip and well worth it.the group we were with were all wonderful people.

3 Day Kakadu & Litchfield Tour Itinerary

Get to know the Top End with our 3-day Outback 4WD adventure through Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks. We’ll explore the top waterfalls and swimming holes in the area, spot wildlife, learn more about the Aboriginal culture and spend the night camping under the incredible starry night sky.

Day One (lunch and dinner) The day starts early as we depart from Darwin, ready for our Top End adventure. Our first stop is the Mary River Wetlands Cruise, where you can observe the local wildlife in their natural habitat. The area is known for crocodiles, buffalo and around 250 species of bird, so see what you can spot as you cruise down the river.

Back on land, we enter Kakadu National Park and stop for lunch at a picturesque spot on the South Alligator River. We then journey deeper into the park to arrive at Ubirr Rock, an important Aboriginal rock art site. Here your guide will interpret the ancient paintings and tell the stories of the Dreamtime. While we are here, we take the opportunity to admire the spectacular views from the Nadab Lookout, over the vast floodplains below and all the way into Arnhem Land. We set up camp at our private campsite nearby, where we enjoy dinner and relax in the peaceful natural surrounds.

Day Two (breakfast, lunch and dinner) As you awake to the sounds of the bush, get ready for a day of adventure through Kakadu National Park. We make the journey to our first stop for the day, Twin Falls, going off-road before taking a boat shuttle and short hike to reach the tranquil swimming spot. In the afternoon, we travel to Jim Jim Falls, where we do another short hike to the waterhole. Relax on the large boulders, swim in the refreshing clear water or chill out on the small sandy beach. Then it’s time to say goodbye to Kakadu as we travel to Litchfield National Park, where we set up camp for the night.

Day Three (breakfast and lunch) We spend our final day discovering the stunning waterholes and rugged landscapes of Litchfield National Park. Hike the bush tracks around Florence and Wangi Falls or take a refreshing dip in the clear waters of the swimming holes. Explore the multiple cascades and rock pools of Buley Holes before we stop to admire the weird and wonderful termite mounds. In the evening, it’s time to head back to Darwin.

You’ll visit all of the city’s most beloved attractions, as well as some of its hidden gems.

Day 1, Morning:

Day 1, Afternoon:

The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory presents an impressive collection of Aboriginal art and offers a realistic look at the devastating effects of Cyclone Tracy in 1974. Immerse yourself in the vivid culture of the Northern Territory by visiting the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory and discover the unique stories of the First Nations people, their art and the effects of Cyclone Tracy.

Follow the paved nature walk along the cliff top to see military artefacts, including gun emplacements from World War II.

3 Day Kakadu Adventure – Accommodated

Explore the wilderness of Kakadu National Park on a 3-day Kakadu 4WD adventure!

You’ll see all the main attractions such as Maguk , Gunlom Falls and Ubirr Rock. Combine small groups, great walks, this is a great Kakadu tour for those looking for a bit of excitement and adventure! Includes a wildlife cruise on Yellow Waters at sunset. Accommodation options on this tour can include the Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel and Cooinda Lodge Kakadu. Accommodation is twin share, with ensuite facilities and air conditioning. Travel by 4WD vehicle. Please note: Solo travellers, single supplement applies. Dinner on night 1 & 2 are not included.

Day 1 – Darwin – Kakadu

Pick up at 8 – 8.15am from your nominated accommodation in Darwin

We start our Kakadu tour by heading towards the world heritage listed Kakadu National Park, with a stopover and the iconic Australiana Bark Hut for quick refreshment.

Arriving in Kakadu enjoy a picnic style lunch at Anbangbang Billabong with panoramic views across the billabong towards Burrunguy (Nourlangie rock).

After lunch explore the galleries at the base of Burrunguy and learn about the stories behind the rock art and how this area is so spiritually important the traditional owners, before climbing to the top of Gunwhardewharde lookout for a spectacular view over the Arnhem Land escarpment and the surrounding woodlands.

Tonight, we stay at our accommodation where you can enjoy a relaxing swim in the pool before joining a 2hr Sunset Cruise on the famous Yellow Waters. Here we will have the opportunity to see spectacular wildlife including abundant birdlife and crocodiles in their natural habitat.

Return to our accommodation for dinner, which is at your own expense.

(Accommodation options on this tour can include the Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel, Cooinda Lodge Kakadu and Kakadu Lodge Resort. Itinerary may change slightly with the schedule, but not the highlights. Please contact us if requiring an itinerary breakdown.)

Day 2 – Kakadu

This morning after a healthy breakfast we head to Gunlom Falls in the southern end of Kakadu. A hike to the top is rewarded with a swim in the naturally occurring infinity pools whilst taking in the panoramic views of southern Kakadu. The bottom plunge pool not to be missed is a must see with its oasis style beach and a great place for another swim before some lunch.

This afternoon we visit Maguk (Barramundi Gorge). A 1 km hike through a paperbark forest with some rock scrambling leads to the plunge pool for a cool swim in a pristine environment.

Time permitting, we visit the Warradjan cultural centre, this is a great opportunity to gain some insight into the traditional owners of Kakadu through interactive displays and demonstrations.

Tonight, we stay at our accommodation in Jabiru.

Dinner tonight is at your own expense in the restaurant.

Day 3: Kakadu – Darwin

We start our day with a short drive to the northern boundary of Kakadu, Stop & enjoy the sights of the tidal East Alligator River with the opportunity to spot some crocs and flying foxes!

Then on to the world famous Ubirr in the north of the park. Some of the best examples of northern Australian rock art can be found here. Learn about the art from your guide and the meaning behind these special paintings. A climb to the top is rewarded with staggering 360º views over the Nardab floodplains and into Arnhem Land.

From here we start to make our way to Darwin stopping off at Mamukala wetlands for some bird watching and views, and then on to the world Famous Humpty Doo Hotel for a cold drink before returning to Darwin at approximately 5pm.

Cancellation Policy

• Minimum 20% non-refundable deposit to confirm bookings of regular departures
• 100% payable for all cancellations within 7 days of departure
• 50% payable for all cancellations between 8-29 days prior to departure
• 20% payable for all cancellations made outside 30 days of departure
• You are strongly advised to take out travel insurance which covers you for cancellation, at the time of booking. If you leave a tour for any reason after it has commenced, we are not obliged to make any refunds for unused services. • Please note we are Territory Expeditions, not Territory comfortable, take it easy, sightseeing tours. Our tours are focused on adventure. This includes 4WD vehicles on rough and rugged dirt tracks, longer hikes and swims. You will get dirty and be challenged. This is not a luxury bus tour. Your accommodation is camping in a permanent safari tent with the option to sleep in a swag. The only stars are in the sky.

He knows exact the right timing to inform us of what we should consider…this speaks very highly to the quality of Litchfield Escape versus larger bus company we saw on the way. We went to many different water holes and Dan was an excellent guide as well as entertaining. The tour was informative as Dan had good knowledge of his surroundings including flora and fauna. Dan provided the floats for those that were not strong swimmers and they too were able to enjoy themselves in these beautiful surroundings. The lunch was sufficient and next time I am in Darwin I will also do the fishing tour with Gavin - the fishing guide who lives and breathes fishing. Unfortunately on this holiday I ran out of time. We had lots of fun on this tour and I recommend this excursion to everyone. Day 1: Darwin – Kakadu

Day 2: Kakadu – Katherine Gorge

Take a guided walk to view Aboriginal rock art at Nourlangie.  Continue to the Warradjan Cultural Centre to view the informative displays and exhibits depicting the traditions of the Aboriginal people in Kakadu. Join the famous Yellow Water Billabong cruise to observe saltwater crocodiles and the colorful range of bird life for which this region is renowned. This afternoon travel to Katherine, the third largest town in the Northern Territory, often described as the place ‘where the outback meets the tropics’. (Lunch included)

Day 3: Katherine – Darwin

Enjoy a morning cruise through Katherine Gorge , one of the most visited sites in Australia’s Top End, it is a stunning network of thirteen gorges carved from billion year old sandstone that are home to many rapids and falls, flowing from the Katherine River.  The cruise will put you at the heart of Katherine Gorge among freshwater crocodiles, wonderful bird life and some of the most amazing scenery the Northern Territory has to offer.  Afterwards take a look through the Nitmiluk Visitor Centre .  The Display Centre and Heritage Museum features large scale models illustrating the flora, fauna and rock formations of the park.  If you would like to purchase our own memory of Nitmiluk, the center has a range of souvenirs and artifacts handmade by the Jawoyn people.  Next stop Pine Creek and historic gold mining town, then a stop at the Adelaide River War Cemetery, the resting place for many of those killed in World War II air raids on Darwin, before returning to Darwin. Kakadu has to be on any list of the best day trips from Darwin. It’s the largest national park in Australia and stretches over nearly 20,000 square kilometres (7,722 square miles) of land. The stark, harsh landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with waterfalls, rainforest, birds and wildlife both shy and deadly, and some of the best Aboriginal rock art in the country.

Located around 1hour and 40 minutes drive from the city, a trip to Kakadu makes for one of the best day tours from Darwin. Here’s what to see and do while you’re there:

This one day tour from Darwin is exhausting, but if you have limited time, it’s your best option for seeing this amazing UNESCO site. The tour includes visiting Nourlangie Rock, a cruise on the Yellow River to meet the local crocs. After lunch, visit Warradjan Aboriginal Centre and learn the history of the area.

If you can stay longer, do one of these multi-day tours. We did the 3-day tour, and it was brilliant.

Located about 90 minutes from Darwin, Litchfield National Park is one of Darwin’s more manageable day trips. It’s a smaller park with a loop road that passes by all the best attractions and has many places to stop and take in the scenery. You’ll still get the fantastic landscape, varied wildlife, and great outdoor activities in this park. It’s just on a smaller, more manageable scale.

What to see in Litchfield

When you visit Litchfield National Park on one of your Darwin day trips, here’s what to see and do:

• Stop off to admire the Florence and Wangi Falls and their crystal-clear pools.
• Visit the sandstone pillars and termite mounds of the Lost City.
• Go for a swim at Buley Rockhole.
• Test yourself on the Walker Creek Walk, which is part of the 39km Tabletop Track.
• Stay out of the water in the wet season unless you want to get eaten by crocs!

There are dozens of operators who sell tours to Litchfield, but we highly recommend you choose a company that offers small group sizes and are eco-certified. Two we recommend are:

Litchfield National Park Full-Day Safari from Darwin

This tour is run by Wayoutback Safaris , who have offered tours in the Northern Territory since 1999. I first travelled with them back in 2002 and had a brilliant time. Since then, everyone who we have recommended to them has felt the same way. We are due to go again later this year.

This 11.5 hour day tour takes a maximum of 27 travellers and includes a BBQ lunch and hiking and swimming. Visit Florence Falls, Wangi Falls and Buley Rockhole. You will also see the impressive termite mounds that the area is famous for.

Darwin: Premium Litchfield Regional Small Group Day Tour

If you prefer a smaller group, then this premium tour from ethical NT . You visit the same places as the tour above but with the addition of Berry Springs and Batchelor. Each trip includes a maximum of 11 guests and an average of only eight. The included lunch is BBQ barramundi, and there are plenty of healthy treats along the way.

Local tip: If you want to stay overnight in the area, consider  Litchfield Safari Camp .

Other Litchfield options

Nitmiluk National Park is around three hours drive from the city, making it one of Darwin’s more isolated day trips. If you’re heading out to this area, you might want to stay the night. The park will reward you for that because there’s so much to do there that a single day could never be enough.

When this park is one of your Darwin day tours, here’s what to do there:

• Marvel at the beauty of the Nitmiluk Gorge as well as the Aboriginal artwork that decorates its walls.
• Take a sunset or sunrise cruise to see the gorge in its best light.
• Cruise or canoe in Katherine Gorge with its fantastic sandstone walls and rock art.
• Go swimming at Edith Falls, one of the few crocodile free places in the Northern Territory.
• Go camping in the idyllic grasslands around Edith Falls.

Tours to Nitmiluk and Katherine

You will visit the gorges of the Nitmiluk National Park and take a 2-hour cruise, have a chance to swim in the waterhole at Edith Falls and even make a brief stop at the town of Katherine.

If the idea of 14 hours is a bit much or you prefer to travel in style, and you have a budget to match, a tour includes a scenic flight from Darwin, a chopper ride over the 13 gorges a 2-hour cruise. This tour with Kookaburra air runs for 8 hours.

Fishing in Darwin is almost an extreme sport. Any time you’re near the water, you have to be aware of the danger of crocodiles. And that’s half the fun, isn’t it?
