311 talks taking a break, fall tour, full album shows, the 311 cruise and much more

Nick Hexum from 311

311 has a lot going on.

Fall tour. Full album shows. A cruise.

And then what?

Nick Hexum, co-lead vocalist and guitarist for the Omaha-bred rock-reggae-rap-funk band, says a break is likely next.

The band has been running with its original lineup since forming in 1990, and they’ve never taken a break. But he said this seems like a good time for it.

Hexum and I caught up on the Pops and Hisses podcast to talk about their fall tour,  the full album shows they’re playing this fall and then dove into the band’s future plans. There may be a break coming up for the band in the future, so listen to the entire episode or read the Q&A below for the skinny on what’s going down.

I was at the show on Friday in Omaha , which is great. It was a fun Omaha hometown show!

Nick Hexum: Did you see when my dad came out at the very end and got a hug from me?

No, I didn’t. But you played Large In the Margin  for him, which I thought was really cool.

Nick Hexum: Yes, he loves that song. And it’s just really nice. It’s a real homecoming vibe when we when we play home.

How’s the tour going? What’s happening on this fall tour?

Nick Hexum: It’s like a five-week tour. And then some weekend shows where we’ll go and play albums in their entirety like Chicago. That’ll be really fun. Then winter off, and then a cruise.

I think that having breaks in there is is a good idea. But, you know, I don’t want to miss all these awesome moments with the kids. So it was nice to have a summer at home. It’s like a big long snow day where like, OK, man, we got to figure out what to do. Let’s, you know, do some different projects. We did a lot of fun stuff during that time cooking. And I built the thing called the inspiration station, which is like a gazebo out in in nature. I go and write music.

After the cruise, what might be beyond that?

Nick Hexum: P-Nut has said that he — and I totally understand — wants to take a bit of a break just to, you know, spend a little bit more time on family. And it’s a healthy thing to have some breaks. So I think it’d be good just to take a bit of a breather.

Every band takes breaks, and does stuff like that. It’s healthy, it’s good.

Nick Hexum: I think, if anything, we might not have had had enough breaks in there. I mean, we love what we do. But, you know, it is important to have a nice work-life balance. I think just having little space and to do some side projects it’s important.

I’ve been working on this sort of a tech startup idea to create like a network where artists can get the services that they need, without getting ripped off. And having, you know, doing things like some record deals have traditionally been very unfair. I mean, a lot of times, the record company isn’t even committed to making an album, much less putting it out or promoting it in any way. Basically, they have all the control and the artists has none. So I think that there’s some definitely opportunities in the modern tech world to get artists do the services that they need without having to totally give away their music. I saw an article that you have to stream millions and millions of streams on Spotify to even make like a minimum wage type salary. So there’s some things that need to be corrected. So I’ve been working in talking to some people about to have this sort of like, a marketplace and network, that artists can get stuff that they need.

Would you maybe be doing some other music?

Nick Hexum: I’ve got a lot of songs. I’ve got my Twitch streaming thing. I could just sort of create music and put it out very low key. I could have a quintet. A lot of different options.

But that’s sort of like the next thing that I I want to figure out, and that ties into the whole, tech thing that I was talking about, right? What is what is the smartest way to put on music now? Making CDs is not the way, but what do you put out?

I’ve heard of artists that go on Patreon and have a subscription do a song a week. That would really open the floodgates. What would that do for my creativity? That would be definitely interesting. But there’s so lots of stuff to figure out.

I don’t know that anybody has the solution. But the more you can figure out workable models, the better.

Nick Hexum: I definitely enjoyed doing some collaborations, like doing the vaporwave stuff with George Clanton was a lot of fun, because I would just create these sort of stony psychedelic ideas. It was super effortless. And then you know, I’ve also done a vocal with Tropidelic, who’s out on tour with us right now. And I think some something for HR from Bad Brains, he’s doing a reggae album, and I sang a vocal for him. As I get older, I like to collaborate more and more. As time goes on, it’s like, let’s jam together, man. Let’s have a conversation. Let’s let’s have improv back and forth and see where it leads.

It’s happened outside of 311 and inside of 311 where we would come up with things together more than we did in the past. And I just think every time I collaborate with a new person, I’m learning new tricks.

Introducing a new element of a new person can create some new ways to play off each other.

Nick Hexum: You know, routine can be a trap. And you have to really try and break that.

I’m looking forward to seeing what next year holds. And I’m  just really enjoying being on the road right now.

You mentioned on stage Friday that it’s been 32 years. 1990 was your first show. It’s gotta be wild think back and realize you guys been doing this for that long.

Nick Hexum: It’s one of the top five longest running original lineup bands. And it’s a lot of history. On this particular tour, I’ve just been like, “Man, there’s just no substitute for the time put in, you know what I mean? Just like they say in Outliers , there’s no substitute for the 10,000 hours. And we’ve got to be way, way past that. So I think it’s a special thing to see musicians that have been playing together for a really long time. There’s just something about it.

Absolutely. I mean, you guys, you guys are such a tight band.

Nick Hexum: Thank you. We keep finding ways to step it up. Like for me, finding ways to improve the vocals, better microphones, better guitar tones, automating the guitar tones. I  have the tones dialed in perfectly from song to song. Like, we just keep trying to find ways to evolve and step it up a little bit.

How was it being back in Omaha?

It was our first time since the what? 5 years ago?

Yeah, it was that 2015 show , which is crazy because you usually tour every summer and come here every other year. But that happens, especially if you when you don’t play concerts for two years.

Nick Hexum: Yeah, all the normal routing has been messed up. And what’s crazy is that there is such a glut of tours going on right now that there’s a shortage of buses and trucks. And we’re like on an antique bus right now. Like, there’s water dripping on my bed. And it because so many tours are out. Because of all the pent-up demand. Like, we fortunately kind of beat the rush to tour last year where not a lot of tours. And together to do that, because of COVID. So then we’re able to kind of pace it. So we’re going to secondary markets right now. So we’ve been the tour has been going great, but I think it’s still sort of resetting after all the craziness of COVID.

You guys have the fall tour and then some of those full album shows. You have done the 3-11 Day shows where you play every song. But are those full album shows hard? Some of the songs, you’ve maybe only played a couple of times ever.

Nick Hexum: We’ve been brushing up on less familiar ones at soundcheck. But truthfully, we could play music and grassroots in our sleep, every any song. It’s, you know, just through the the repetition. It’s so well ingrained. But then when you get up to  Transistor , then there’s some we’ll definitely need some practice on. Like when you get to Creature Feature and some of these like real, real deep cuts on Transistor . But the first one is Music one night and grassroots in New York City, and that’s going to be that’ll just be a total victory lap.

Those hometown shows gotta be fun. Like you said, your dad came on stage. I saw Chad’s mom. I saw P-Nut’s, mom.

Nick Hexum: Yeah, it’s a really long guest list on shows, but it was a cool setting.

I had a really nice day off in Omaha to walk around your neighborhood and see my old stomping grounds. It’s a very nice feeling. And I got to we were in Omaha for about five days earlier. We had a traditional family vacation of renting an RV and going up to like the Badlands and Custer State Park and starting in Omaha and doing a family camping trip. So I actually got a lot of Omaha time this year.

Thanks for talking to me and appreciate it, as always.

Nick Hexum: Hey, man, thanks for the continued support and always got to say thank you to all the 311 fans listening for supporting our rock’n’roll dreams. We’re very grateful.

311 is on a fall tour right now that runs through mid-November. On the band’s last five fall shows, they’re playing their first five albums in their entirety. Then 311 has its 7th Caribbean Cruise in March, and it runs over 3-11 Day (March 11).

Check out the band’s full tour schedule and get tickets at 311.com .

311’s Caribbean Cruise to Jamaica

311 cruise history

From February 25th to March 1st, 2015, 311 will perform three shows, with each being a different set. One of those sets will feature 1999’s Soundsystem , in its entirety & this will be the first time 311 has played the album, live, from start to finish! They’ll also be performing songs off their 9th studio album, Stereolithic that was aptly released on March 11th, 2014.

As mentioned before, 311 plans on keeping good company and thus far, that company includes Dirty Heads & Pepper who will also be performing! It doesn’t stop there as they plan to announce more bands, DJs & comedians. In addition to the music, fans aboard the Cruise Line will have access to the ship’s pool, bars, restaurants, basketball court, rock climbing wall, casino, spa, bowling alley & we’re assuming there’s much more!

311 vocalist/guitarist, Nick Hexum , says, “The 311 Cruise is just such an amazing experience for us and our fans. The energy and unity on the ship is always incredible. We especially can’t wait to go to Jamaica this time and to play Soundsystem in its entirety. It’s a dream trip for us and our fans.”

Soundsystem was released October 12th, 1999 & debuted at number 9 on The Billboard 200. The whole album, including it’s artwork & title, were all inspired by the members visit to Jamaica in the ’90’s.

Playing Soundsystem in its entirety for this trip is a surprising choice, considering that 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of one of their top records with, Grassroots . We’re not complaining & we hope us fans will have access to purchase or download a live version of the album, from start to finish! My personal favorite off Soundsystem is “Strong All Along” .

Now for Ticket Purchasing…

Prices for the trip, which don’t include airfare, range from $619 to $3,674. In addition to whichever option you purchase, an additional $215 will be added for Tax & fees. Not a bad expense considering the entertainment, accommodations, scenery & travel over 4 days to Jamaica and back.

The Beautiful History Of Cruises Over Time

Posted: January 7, 2024 | Last updated: January 7, 2024

From the earliest transatlantic voyages and golden-age ships to today's glittering juggernauts, we reveal 32 nostalgic images that chronicle cruise history.

Sailing through time

Before passengers began taking to the high seas, now-famous cruise lines principally operated as mail-shipping services. P&O, then the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company, won a contract to deliver mail to the Iberian Peninsula in 1837, a milestone event that would pave the way for commercial travel by ocean. The Black Ball Line, whose ships carried both passengers and mail, also became the first line to schedule a regular trans-Atlantic service. A Black Ball ship is pictured here in 1833.

1830s: the very beginnings

In the first half of the 19th century, most people crossed oceans for business rather than leisure – nevertheless, P&O is credited with launching the first pleasure cruises in this era. Boats bound for the Mediterranean struck out from England in 1844, with on-board passengers dreaming of sun, sand and sea. Pictured here is the P&O passenger liner SS Deccan sailing from Southampton a little later in 1870.

1840s: the first pleasure cruises

This decade also saw some of the biggest names in cruising sail onto the scene. The Cunard Line was founded in 1840, boasting an impressive fleet of steam-powered ships and whisking the likes of Charles Dickens to destinations such as Boston. Pictured here, in 1848, is Europa, one of Cunard's early Atlantic ships. The White Star Line, the operator of the famously ill-fated Titanic, was also founded in 1845.

1840s: a landmark in cruise-line history

Passenger cruising continued to develop through the mid-19th century, with luxuries like on-board lounges and simple entertainment emerging. Shown here, in 1856, is Cunard's RMS Persia, one of the largest ships of her time and an early Blue Riband winner (an award given for high-speed Atlantic crossings).

Business and pleasure weren't the only reasons for taking to the waves, though – in the 1870s, European immigrants were traveling to America in great numbers. Lines like the Holland America Line, launched in 1873, became famous for transporting great waves of people searching for a new life in the New World. This fun advert for the company dates to 1898.

1870s: the New World

In the 1880s, now well-established names like Cunard and P&O continued to make waves. Launched in 1881, and pictured here in 1899, SS Servia was the first Cunard passenger ship to function with electric lighting. To many, she represents an early model of today's modern liners.

1880s: lighting up the ocean

By the end of the 19th century, passenger cruise ships had become an exercise in luxury, with Cunard tipping its liners as "floating palaces". Offerings from competitors like P&O were just as lavish: this 1892 snap shows an opulent smoking room on P&O's Himalaya ship. Notice the plush booths, dark carved wood and intricate ceiling reliefs.

1890s: “floating palaces”

The period from the 1900s to the end of the 1930s is what many consider cruising’s golden age. By this point, the journey had become as important as the destination and passengers would don their finery to take to the seas for weeks on end. Here the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough relax on the deck of P&O's Arabia, en route to Mumbai in 1902.

1900s: entering cruising’s golden age

<p>At the turn of the century, there was still a frisson around cruising and large, buzzy crowds would often gather to see off the ships. This nostalgic photograph was snapped between 1900 and 1915, and shows large steam boats leaving from the White Star Line dock in Detroit, Michigan. Well-dressed passengers fill the ships' upper and lower decks too. <a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/67628/where-planes-trains-cruise-ships-and-automobiles-go-to-die?page=1">Discover where planes, trains, cruise ships and cars go to die here</a>.</p>

By the 1900s, passenger cruise services were nothing new. But the Prinzessin Victoria Luise (pictured) – a glamorous ship pioneered by the Hamburg America Line – is generally touted as the first purpose-built cruise ship. Launched in the summer of 1900, she was a grand ship with an ornately decorated bow and lavish interiors complete with luxurious first-class cabins. She came out of service in 1906 when she ran aground.

1900s: the first purpose-built cruise ship

Many early 20th-century cruise ships had plenty of luxury amenities, but the entertainment on offer was a far cry from the glitzy shows and hi-tech attractions we're used to today. Common pastimes included shuffleboard, dancing and games like tug of war. Captured in 1912, these passengers on Cunard's Franconia enjoy a high-jump contest on deck.

1910s: onboard entertainment

<p>One of the most famous and devastating events in cruise history occurred in this decade. Dubbed "unsinkable" by the White Star Line's vice-president, the Titanic set out from Southampton on her maiden voyage on 10 April 1912 to much applause. But just four days later, she collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic: the compartments in her hull filled with water and she tragically sank. The disaster claimed the lives of more than 1,500 people. <a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/gallerylist/72633/secrets-of-the-titanic-life-onboard-the-worlds-most-famous-ship">Now discover the secrets of life onboard the Titanic</a>.</p>

Just as cruising was enjoying its heyday, the industry entered troubled waters. The First World War halted progress in commercial cruising as attention was turned to the war effort. Many commercial liners were repurposed as military ships – Fred. Olsen, for example, purportedly lost 23 ships to the conflict. This 1918 photograph shows New York City crowds waiting for the return of Cunard's RMS Mauretania, which was carrying American soldiers back home after the war.

1910s: First World War

Still, against the odds, the cruise industry managed to keep its head above water and, post-war, the upper echelons of society took to the seas once more. Here affluent travelers dance on the deck of Cunard's Aquitania in 1922.

1920s: cruising’s golden age continued

In the Roaring Twenties, onboard entertainment was still focused around fun deck games and sports. Here spectators look on in delight as a pair of women take part in a fencing duel aboard Cunard's Berengaria (formerly Hamburg America Line's Imperator). The shot was taken in 1923.

1920s: setting the bar high

Huge dining rooms and bulging buffets are markers of the modern-day cruise and, in the 1920s, dinnertime was equally important. It was typically a grand affair requiring formal dress and involving course after course of fine food. Here, two chefs on Cunard's Aquitania stand before a splendid festive spread – the star is the giant cake in the shape of the ship.

1920s: a festive feast

Another major milestone came in the 1920s: the very first round-the-world cruise. The Cunard Line's RMS Laconia (pictured here leaving Liverpool circa 1920) sailed around the globe in 1922, calling at 22 ports along the way, and taking 450 lucky passengers with her.

The 1930s unfolded in much the same way as the decades previous, as the golden age of cruising continued: think deck games, dinners and dances. The king of all cruise-ship hobbies was shuffleboard, a game that's still often played on modern-day liners. Here, a couple enjoy a game on a cruise to Gibraltar on Cunard's Aquitania in 1932.

1930s: all games on deck

Today mammoth sun-bed-lined swimming pools – often with twirling water slides for kids – are a cruise-ship staple. But in the first half of the 20th century they were much humbler indeed. It's thought that the earliest cruise-ship swimming pool was installed in 1907, on the White Star Line's Adriatic, but they didn't become commonplace until later. Here passengers sunbathe next to a compact swimming pool onboard a Cunard cruise to the West Indies in 1931.

1930s: making a splash

The Second World War was another blow to commercial cruising: yet again, liners were repurposed as war vessels and pleasure cruising came to an abrupt halt. By the end of the decade, though, surviving ships were returned to their lines and put back into service. Slowly but surely, the appetite for cruising grew again. Here an excited crowd welcomes a ship at a Java seaport in the 1940s.

1940s: post-war cruising

<p>Come the 1950s, cruise ships had another phenomenon to compete with: jet planes. Commercial air travel boomed in this decade, with comfier aircraft and improved routes enticing travelers into the skies. Many cruise liners underwent swish post-war refits in an attempt to stay afloat: this 1950s photo shows the opulent dining room of French liner SS Île de France after a dramatic post-war makeover. <a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/86315/how-air-travel-has-changed-in-every-decade-from-the-1920s?page=1">See how air travel has changed through the decades</a>.</p>

Many cruise liners underwent swish post-war refits in an attempt to stay afloat: this 1950s photo shows the opulent dining room of French liner SS Île de France after a dramatic post-war makeover.

There was one destination that proved particularly popular in the post-war decades, though. After the conflict, many Europeans decided to make a new life Down Under, with millions cruising to Oz on time-honored lines like P&O between the 1940s and the 1970s. P&O ship Oriana is pictured here in Circular Quay, Sydney circa 1950.

1950s: going Down Under

<p>Though formalized in the 1930s, the Blue Riband – the award for the passenger cruise liner with the fastest Atlantic-crossing time – has its roots right back in the 19th century. The record is still held by SS United States of United States Lines, which first sped across the Atlantic in 1952. She's pictured here on 9 July 1952, docking in Southampton. <a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/103600/vacation-on-mars-what-holidays-could-look-like-in-the-future?page=1">This is what vacations could look like in 2050</a>.</p>

The record is still held by SS United States of United States Lines, which first sped across the Atlantic in 1952. She's pictured here on 9 July 1952, docking in Southampton.

By the 1960s, the Jet Age had well and truly taken hold, and fewer and fewer passengers were choosing to make trans-Atlantic journeys by boat. Still, though, that didn't stop some major players in the cruise world from launching. The decade saw the founding of brands including Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean and Princess Cruises. This vintage 1960s snap shows the already established SS Île de France sailing for the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique.

1960s: the Jet Age

<p>As flying became more commonplace, the popularity of cruising looked set to dwindle. However, one particular TV series is often credited with keeping travelers' passion for cruising alive. <em>The Love Boat </em>– aired from the 1970s – was a comedy series that followed the crew and passengers of luxury liner SS Pacific Princess. Such was its popularity, some say it brought cruising back into the mainstream once more. This shot shows Cunard Line's Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1975. </p>

By the 1970s, lower costs meant that cruising had opened up to the masses. But the invention of the jumbo jet meant air travel had too, and the latter was the quicker, more convenient choice for traveling overseas. Therefore, the cruise reinvented itself. Ships were no longer marketed as a way to get from A to B, they were destinations in themselves, and the "leisure cruise" was its own phenomena. Here passengers enjoy the deck of P&O's SS Oronsay in 1975.

1970s: cruising opens up to the masses

<p>The 1980s is thought to be the decade that pioneered the "cruise to nowhere", where the ship really was the destination. The SS Norway (pictured) – a lavish mega ship with room for thousands of passengers and amenities like a casino – embarked on a no-docking cruise in this decade. <a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/gallerylist/84317/the-incredible-story-of-how-cruising-has-changed-from-titanic-to-today">This is the incredible story of how cruising has changed since 1912</a>.</p>

By the 1990s Disney was spreading a little magic at sea. Disney Magic, a bold ship with black, yellow and red detailing à la Mickey Mouse, made its maiden voyage in 1998. It's pictured here that same year, cruising through Venice, and is still sailing today, complete with a spa, pools and plenty of shops and themed dining rooms.

<p>Fast-forward to the 2000s and the larger-than-life, no-expense-spared, mega cruise ships we're used to seeing today were sailing onto the scene. This sunset snap shows Cunard Line's Queen Mary II as she completes her first trans-Atlantic voyage in January 2004. Cruise ships continued to expand in the 2010s while cruising itself became the fastest-growing category in the leisure travel market. Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas (pictured here) launched in 2018 as the largest cruise ship in the world (until 2022). The tide began to turn on sustainability, with several cruise ships built to run on liquefied natural gas and battery power. Another health-based factor was reducing onboard smoking to selected areas only.

2010s: bigger, better and healthier

<p>The 2020s got off to an eventful start. The COVID-19 pandemic halted almost all cruises, with some passengers and crew marooned onboard while testing and entry protocols were debated. However, 2022 has indicated a return to pre-pandemic popularity, with 300 cruise ships departing in April – pretty impressive compared to just 22 departing in April 2021. Band History

Band history.

311 cruise history

All five members of 311 grew up in the 1970’s in Omaha, Nebraska. Nick Hexum, Tim Mahoney and Chad Sexton lived on the west side of town and went to Westside High School together. P-Nut and SA Martinez lived on the south side of town and went to Bryan High School together.

During high school, Nick and Tim played in a rock band together called “The Ed’s”. Nick was also in the high school concert jazz band with Chad.

At seventeen, Nick graduated early from high school and moved to downtown Los Angeles in pursuit of a music career. When Nick returned to Omaha for Chad and Tim’s high school graduation – the three of them jammed and realized they had a special musical chemistry. They soon added a keyboardist named Ward Bones and called themselves “Unity”. In late ’88, Nick, Chad and Ward moved to LA and made an unsuccessful stab at getting a recording contract.

Disillusioned with the L.A. scene, Chad soon moved back to Omaha and began jamming with P-Nut and a guitarist named Jim Watson. Months later, Chad persuaded Nick to move back to Omaha and join them. They played their first gig opening for Fugazi on June 10th 1990.

311 cruise history

In 1991, they parted ways with Jim Watson and added Tim Mahoney as lead guitarist. At that time, SA Martinez began to make guest appearances with the band – and was eventually added as a full member. 311 was complete (Nick, Chad, Tim, P-Nut and SA).

In 1990 & 1991 the band released three independent records on their own label (What Have You Records). The records were called “Dammit,” “Hydroponic,” and “Unity.” With these records and their solid live show, the band quickly established a following in the Midwest and then set out for the West Coast.

They rented a small house in Van Nuys, California and all moved in together. These were very lean times for the band. Just before disintegrating into total poverty, they were signed to Capricorn Records.

311’s first cd “Music”, was released with little fanfare in February of ’93 (now Gold). The band hit the road in support of the record and was temporarily sidelined when their touring RV caught on fire and exploded on the shoulder of the highway. The fire destroyed all their equipment, clothes, money and personal possessions. Despite losing everything – the band members escaped the blaze with minor burns and injuries. They decided to persevere and they only canceled one show before returning to the stage with equipment donated by fans and friends who heard about the disaster on the television news.

In July of ’94 they released their second cd “Grassroots” (now Gold). By this time they were touring the US non-stop. They moved out of the house in Van Nuys – put their stuff into a storage space and literally just lived on the road. They put all their energy into their live show and steadily developed an incredible grassroots following nationwide.

311 cruise history

In July ’95 they released their third cd “311” and once again set out on tour. By ’96 the shows and the fanbase had grown considerably – and the media which had basically ignored 311 until then, began paying attention. In September of ’96 (14 months after the release of the “311” album) the song “Down” hit the airwaves and became an across the board success at radio and MTV. “Down” went to #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart and the follow-up single “All Mixed Up” went to #2.

After the success of the “311” album (which is now triple Platinum), 311 released a long form home video called “Enlarged to Show Detail” containing live concert footage, interviews, videos, backstage footage, etc. To make it a unique item, 311 bundled the video with a 5 song EP containing outtakes from the “311” cd. The home video debuted at #1 on Billboards Music Video Sales Chart and is now a Platinum video.

After releasing the home video, 311 went back into the studio to record their fourth cd “Transistor”. “Transistor” debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 and is now Platinum.

311’s 1997 headlining tour in support of the “Transistor” album drew an average of 10,000 people per night in the US. The band also toured Europe, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

In September of 1998, 311 re-issued some old material on the “Omaha Session” EP. The EP contains 9 songs from the bands 1989-1991 independent releases (“Dammit,” “Hydroponic” and “Unity”). The EP is on the band’s original “What Have You Records” label and is only available via the 311 website (www.311music.com) and the 311 Mail Order Merch Catalog.

In November of 1998, 311 released 311 Live – a collection of live recordings from the 1997 US Tour. And in October of 1999, 311 released their fifth cd “Soundsystem” which debuted at #9 and toured extensively in the US and Japan.

311 cruise history

In 2000, the band purchased a recording studio in North Hollywood. After making some renovations and bringing in their own equipment, they renamed it “The Hive” (which is also the name of their fanclub). The studio was active in the 70’s / 80’s. Missing Persons and Adam Ant recorded albums there and most recently it was used as a voice over studio for movies, etc.

In 2001, the band released “From Chaos” which debuted at #10 on the Billboard Top 200 Sales Chart. 311 toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe in support of “From Chaos”. The first single “You Wouldn’t Believe” reached #7 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart. The second single “I’ll Be Here Awhile” reached #15 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart. The single “Amber” reached #10 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart and #30 on the Billboard Modern AC Chart. The album is certified Gold.

On July 22, 2003, 311 released their 7th studio album “Evolver” which included the singles, “Creatures (For A While)” and “Beyond the Gray Sky.” The band recorded and mixed the album at their own studio, The Hive in North Hollywood, CA. The video for “Creatures (For A While)” was directed by the Malloy Brothers, who also directed 311’s video for “Amber”. To support the album, 311 embarked on a massive US tour with opening acts such as The Roots, O.A.R., Something Corporate, Medeski Martin & Wood and more.

311 cruise history

In 2004, 311 was asked by Adam Sandler to contribute an 80’s cover song to his movie “Fifty First Dates.” 311 recorded The Cure’s “Love Song.” 311’s version of “Love Song” reached #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Radio Chart! Making it the band’s second #1 hit and their sixth single to crack the Top 10! Nick Hexum also produced four other songs for the movie’s soundtrack including songs with Seal, Jason Mraz and Dryden Mitchell from Alien Ant Farm.

On 3-11-04, 311 fans once again invaded the city of New Orleans for a special 3-11 Day Concert. 311 performed a legendary 5 hour set at UNO Lakefront Arena in front of a sold-out crowd of 311’s biggest fans. The band played 68 songs including all their classic hits plus rarities and covers (Led Zeppelin’s “D’yer Maker”, The Clash’s “White Man in Hammersmith Palais”, The Cure’s “Love Song”). The entire concert was filmed and recorded and ultimately released (Oct 26, 2004) as a special 2-DVD set”3-11 Day Live in New Orleans.” The DVD includes 64 songs plus a behind the scenes look at the band and their fans. The DVD is now certified Platinum.
