Flight delays are frustrating. Whether it’s because of thunderstorms or an overbooked crew, the result is the same: You don’t get to where you’re trying to go.

It’s never pleasant when things go awry, but if you’re flying on American Airlines, you have some options. Let’s look at American Airlines delayed flight compensation, your rights and other things to know.

What to know about American Airlines delayed flight compensation

1. american airlines may not owe you anything.

Although the Department of Transportation (DOT) has regulations when it comes to flight cancellations and compensation, there isn't a similar ruling for flight delays.

Recently, airlines have begun to make clearer commitments to the type of compensation you’ll receive during a flight delay with one specific caveat: These apply only to controllable delays.

This means that airlines have only guaranteed to give you compensation when things such as missing crew or maintenance issues arise. It doesn’t apply to air traffic control or weather delays.

2. Your credit card can reimburse you

Even if American Airlines isn’t willing to reimburse you for delays, there’s a good chance your credit card will. Many travel credit cards offer complimentary travel insurance, which includes trip delay insurance, trip interruption insurance, delayed luggage insurance and more.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® card is among the best for complimentary travel insurance — simply because it provides so many protections. This includes trip delay insurance, which kicks in after a six-hour delay or one that forces you to stay overnight.

» Learn more: The best airline credit cards right now

The protection caps out at $500 per person and will reimburse you for reasonable expenses incurred as a result of the delay. These expenses can include:

Toiletries.

Medications.

Other personal use items you may need.

Importantly, credit card travel insurance can also cover more than one person. In Chase’s case, this means you, your partners and your legally dependent children up to age 26 are all covered as long as you charge a portion of the fare to your card.

3. There is more than one type of compensation

American Airlines offers more than one type of compensation if your flight is canceled or delayed. If your flight is significantly delayed and you choose not to fly, you’ll be entitled to a refund. However, the DOT has not specifically defined what constitutes a "significant delay," so this may be difficult to enforce.

For controllable delays, American Airlines has made a variety of commitments to its passengers, including the provision of accommodation and food vouchers.

4. The DOT dashboard outlines your rights

The DOT maintains an up-to-date dashboard for 10 airlines outlining your rights. This provides information as to what American Airlines has committed to providing if your flight is delayed or canceled.

Here is what American Airlines has committed to providing its customers in the event of a controllable delay:

Rebook you on a new flight in the case of significant delays.

Rebook you on a partner airline or an airline with which it has an agreement in the event of a significant delay.

Give you a meal or meal voucher for a delay lasting three hours or more.

Provide you with hotel accommodations for an overnight delay.

Give you ground transportation to and from your hotel for an overnight delay.

» Learn more: Flight delay compensation — what you should get if you’re stuck

5. Delayed EU flights can compensate you

Although the DOT doesn’t have many protections for customers on flights, the European Union does. Under EU261 , airlines are required to compensate you for delays on most flights from or through the EU. The regulation also requires airlines give compensation for disrupted flights headed to the EU from outside — if the airline is an EU airline.

The amount of flight delay compensation is based on the amount of the delay and the distance of your flight.

Note that compensation is applicable only for controllable delays, such as mechanical issues. Severe weather or air traffic issues aren’t eligible for reimbursement.

6. You’re owed if you get bumped

Overbooking is a common airline practice. This means that airlines will sell more seats than they have in the hope that some passengers don’t show up. However, sometimes everyone does arrive and airlines are forced to bump passengers. They’ll first ask for volunteers; if there aren’t enough volunteers, they’ll then start bumping people involuntarily.

You have rights if you get involuntarily bumped from your flight. If you arrive within one hour of your originally scheduled arrival time, you won’t get any compensation. Any more than that, however, and the numbers start rising.

Depending on how long you end up delayed, the airline will owe you between 200% and 400% of the fare that you paid (note that there are maximums to this).

You’ll also be eligible for compensation if you were traveling on an award ticket and end up bumped. In this case, your compensation is based on the lowest cash, check or credit card payment charged for a ticket in the same class of service on your flight.

American Airlines delayed flight compensation recapped

There’s no good way to deal with a flight delay. This is true on any airline, American Airlines included.

However, if your flight has been delayed for a controllable reason, you may be entitled to compensation. Do your research, check out the DOT’s dashboard, and make sure you get what you’re entitled to when American Airlines makes you late.

American Airlines Passengers Could Be In For A Summer Of Delays And Cancellations

Passengers on American Airlines have had it especially rough, with the airline canceling hundreds of flights in recent days.

Just as hundreds of thousands of Americans return to the skies again this summer, many of the old inconveniences and aggravations of commercial airline travel are back, too. And experts say travelers should expect ongoing problems throughout the busy summer season.

Long lines at security checkpoints, disruptive passengers and lengthy flight delays and cancellations are greeting many air travelers who may not have boarded a plane in 15 months or more because of the pandemic.

Passengers on American Airlines have had it especially rough, with the airline canceling hundreds of flights in recent days because of staffing shortages and what the airline in a statement calls "unprecedented weather."

The airline canceled more than 120 flights on Saturday, 188 on Sunday, and at least 162 on Monday, Flight Aware reported . Additionally, the flight tracking website said, 760 American flights were delayed Sunday, and nearly 800 flights were delayed Monday.

Weather and staffing have caused problems

In a statement, American cited "unprecedented weather" as one of the causes of the company's recent troubles.

Indeed, violent thunderstorms the last few days affected some of the country's biggest airports, including Dallas-Fort Worth International, Chicago's O'Hare International, Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International and Washington Dulles International, among others.

The airline also explains it has preemptively canceled flights ahead of time to minimize surprises for passengers at the airport, saying its cancellations are primarily in markets with multiple options for passengers to rebook on other flights.

Flying Overseas? There's A LOT You Need To Know. Here's A Guide

Goats and Soda

Flying overseas there's a lot you need to know. here's a guide.

Going forward, American is now proactively canceling about 1% of its scheduled flights each day through the middle of July. An American spokeswoman said that amounts to about 50 to 80 of the airline's daily departures.

But Capt. Dennis Tajer, a 737 pilot for American Airlines and a spokesman for the airline's pilots union, told NPR the issue stems from the company's aggressive plan to restore flight schedules to near pre-pandemic levels despite a severe pilot shortage as a result of strategic moves made during the pandemic.

A security checkpoint line last week at Denver International Airport reflects the post-pandemic interest in air travel.

Early retirement offers and furloughs created a shortage

To save money during the global travel slowdown, Tajer said, American offered pilots who were nearing retirement a buyout package. "About a thousand pilots took advantage of that," he estimated.

"The thing about that is that now you have to train a new pilot into that seat. Just because a captain of a 737 goes out the door, the airplane is still there, and you've got to find a replacement," the pilot said.

He noted that while it may have been a good cost-saving measure at the time, it has only served to exacerbate American's bigger problem: It can't train and recertify pilots fast enough to meet demand.

Despite $50 billion in grant bailouts that were used to prop up the airline industry through the downturn and ensure they'd be ready when customers returned, American fell behind on its obligation to keep its pilots certified and up to date on flying requirements, Tajer said.

Banking On Busy Summer Travel Season, Airlines Add More Flights And New Routes

Banking On Busy Summer Travel Season, Airlines Add More Flights And New Routes

"Instead, American was the only major network to furlough pilots," he recalled.

Roughly 1,600 pilots were put on a leave of absence for several months. "That means that for all of that time, they were not flying regularly or training on simulators to be certified to fly like they are required to be."

In a statement, American spokeswoman Gianna Urgo told NPR that all "previously furloughed pilots were recalled in December 2020 in accordance with the extension of the Payroll Support Program, and began returning to training and work based on operational need."

Dispute over a training and certification bottleneck

According to Urgo, "pilot training remains on track" and the company is on schedule to have all recalled pilots "complete training by the end of June."

Tajer said that is overly optimistic, and alleged a bottleneck in the training and recertification pipeline caused by an instructor shortage, as well limited access to the needed types of flight simulators, have slowed things down. In many cases, he said, "it can take up to two months" to regain flying status.

An email from American officials to employees dated April 20, and obtained by NPR, projected all recalled pilots would be returning to flying status "by the end of the summer."

In the best cases, this spells potential frustration for anyone with summer travel plans, according to Tajer, while, in the worst cases, it could be "a total disaster for some people."

He noted a recent internal message to employees touting the airline's new destinations under a headline reading, "A Great American Summer."

It could be that, he said. "Or will it be a great American bummer?"

This New Chart Tells Airline Passengers What They're Owed for Flight Disruptions

It's definitely a start

aa travel disruption

We all know that travel has been a challenge this past year—and the horror stories are countless, from full boards of canceled and delayed flights to pilot strikes to luggage that either gets abandoned or lost entirely. But what we didn't know—until now—is exactly what kind of compensation we can expect from the airlines for the trouble. Now, we're one step closer, as the 10 major airlines in the U.S. recently released clearer-cut outlines of what they are responsible for in the case of a delay or cancellation.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg finally took action, writing to the airlines to say the Department of Transportation would publish a dashboard where airline passengers can see what they are owed depending on the circumstance. He gave them until the Friday before Labor Day weekend to update their policies around delays, cancellations, and lost luggage, taking the guesswork (and fancy footwork) out of the equation.

American, Alaska, Allegiant, JetBlue, Delta, United, Southwest, Spirit, Hawaiian, and Frontier have all spelled out what passengers can expect to receive in the case of "controllable delays" and "controllable cancellations," meaning delays and cancellations that are not due to weather or acts of god.

While each airline will have its policies outlined on its website, the DOT has created a handy online comparison chart so passengers can easily access and compare the information. The chart lists benefits and compensation and notes whether or not an airline will provide it to passengers in the given circumstance.

Currently, American, Delta, United, and JetBlue are the only airlines offering every benefit listed for both controllable cancellations and controllable delays, including rebooking on the same airline or a different airline free of charge, meal or cash vouchers when a passenger wait exceeds three hours, free hotel for delays or cancellations that result in the need for an overnight stay, and complimentary transportation to and from the provided hotel. The least accommodating airline is Frontier.

Additionally, in the case of significant delays or flight cancellations, airlines must promptly refund passengers who decline to be rebooked.

The DOT has also stated that this is just the beginning. They're also looking for public feedback on whether airline seating is too cramped, whether airlines should legally have to inform passengers when they are eligible for benefits and compensation, and whether airlines should have to issue non-expiring travel credits to passengers who cancel due to COVID-19 infection or outbreaks. They also weigh in on if airlines should be required to clearly define significant delays or the types of cancellations that would make a passenger eligible for benefits.

"Passengers deserve transparency and clarity on what to expect from an airline when there is a cancellation or disruption," U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement. "This dashboard collects that information in one place so travelers can easily understand their rights, compare airline practices, and make informed decisions. The Department [of Transportation] will continue to support passengers and to hold airlines responsible for adhering to their customer obligations."

12 Things You Can Do to Handle Flight Delays and Cancellations

Summer travel season off to rough start amid widespread flight delays

People wait to reschedule their flights at Newark International Airport, in Newark, N.J.

The feared repeat of last year's summer travel woes began to materialize this week , with thousands of flights delayed or canceled amid inclement weather and staffing shortages.

The troubles began last weekend, with nearly 2,000 U.S. flights canceled, according to FlightAware. Disruptions continued into Monday, when more than 11,000 U.S. flights were delayed or canceled. At least 7,300 were affected Tuesday.

By Wednesday, the delays and cancellations had begun to level off to about 2,000 U.S. flights, according to FlightAware.

The delays come as the U.S. faces an ongoing shortage of air traffic controllers. It's an issue that United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby highlighted in a letter to employees Monday, attributing the shortage to potentially more headaches in the coming weeks.

“I’m ... frustrated that the FAA frankly failed us this weekend,” Kirby said, adding that he estimated more than 150,000 United customers had experienced disruptions “because of FAA staffing issues and their ability to manage traffic.”

A Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson said, “We will always collaborate with anyone seriously willing to join us to solve a problem.”

The shortages are unlikely to be resolved quickly, Zach Griff at The Points Guy travel website said. Staffing problems are also likely to be compounded by a number of issues.

"When thunderstorms hit, it's up to controllers to recalibrate the air network, and it’s taking longer because they're understaffed," Griff said. "And some of that staff are not the experienced types who’ve been through this before. This is not something that can be solved overnight."

Griff said it is somewhat unusual for storm activity to linger in the way it has in recent days over the Northeast, and current weather forecasts suggest more storms for the area are likely this weekend. The situation could also be compounded by ongoing visibility issues caused by smoke emanating from wildfires in Canada.

The travel year had started off relatively smoothly until the most recent troubles, FlightAware spokesperson Kathleen Bangs said. But she said she'd be surprised if the summer travel blues did not linger, especially in the Northeast, where air traffic controller shortages are most acute.

"It would be a pleasant surprise if we don’t continue to see bottleneck traffic," she said.

Tips for rebooking a flight

To avoid being trapped in an endless line to rebook at your airline’s terminal, get on the internet immediately and start looking for alternative forms of travel. Experts say Google’s flight search option is the best bet for finding the most up-to-date choices when it comes to getting a new flight, which are also searchable by a number of criteria, including price.

If you’re strapped for cash and are looking to rebook, you’ll still want to attempt to call the airline before or as you wait in line with an in-person rebooking agent. Of note: Not all major airlines have rebooking agreements with other carriers. The ones that do are: Alaska, American, Delta, Hawaiian, JetBlue and United. That ones that do not are: Allegiant, Frontier, Southwest and Spirit.

Unfortunately, you have few rights if your flight is delayed or canceled for reasons outside of an airline’s control

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation website, only factors like maintenance or crew problems, cabin cleaning, baggage loading, and fueling count as within an airline’s control.

If your flight was delayed for longer than three hours, or canceled for any of those reasons and it takes longer than three hours to rebook your travel, you are entitled to a meal or meal cash/voucher.

For an overnight delay or overnight cancellation, you are entitled to complimentary hotel accommodations and complimentary ground transport to and from a hotel. Overnight hotel accommodations and travel to and from a hotel do not apply to Frontier Airlines . Click here for more information.

If your flight is delayed for any other reason, like weather, you are not entitled to any compensation or refund.

What your rights are if your flight was significantly delayed or canceled

In this situation, you are only entitled to a refund if you don’t take an offer to be rebooked on another flight. That also means you don’t have to accept an airline’s offer of a voucher.

According to the Transportation Department : “If an airline cancels a passenger’s flight or makes a significant change in the flight, regardless of the reason, airlines are required to provide a prompt refund to a ticketed passenger, including those with non-refundable tickets, should the passenger choose not to accept the alternative offered, such as rebooking on another flight.”

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

Moscow Sky Lights Up With Strange Glow After Explosion at Electrical Substation: Reports

N ew footage has emerged showing bright flashes lighting up the night sky in southern Moscow during the early morning hours of November 22.

Knewz.com has learned that there was an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of Russia's capital city followed by an alleged power outage in "several" homes.

Video snippets, shared on Russian news channels like ASTRA , captured a series of flashes that caused the sky to change color. Smoke could also be seen rising from a building.

Corroborating the video, several Russian Telegram accounts reported an explosion near the south of Moscow and a subsequent fire at the Lyublino electrical substation, southeast of central Moscow, per Newsweek .

The local authorities from the area have since confirmed that an explosion occurred in the village of Molokovo, but they reassured the public that all vital facilities were operating as normal.

Russian outlet MSK1.ru reported the blaze at the substation and noted “several” power outages.

The town of Lytkarino, located to the southeast of Moscow, was one of the affected areas, as reported by the independent outlet, Meduza .

Additional power failures were reported in the southern Domodedovo section of the city. However, electricity was later restored to these areas.

One local resident speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but additional sources are yet to support this theory.

Newsweek reported that messages on the ASTRA Telegram account run by independent Russian journalists showed residents near the substation panicking. One concerned Russian called it a "nightmare."

The incident follows an attack by Russia on a power station in southwestern Ukraine that left 2,000 people without electricity .

Knewz.com reported previously:

“ Russian forces launched a total of 38 Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 drones during the later hours of November 17 and 18.

The Ukrainian Air Force Command reported that 29 of these drones were shot down [...].

One civilian was injured as a result of the attack that targeted energy infrastructure in the southwestern Odesa Oblast.”

The assault came after repeated warnings by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky that Russia would try to cripple its power grid as winter approaches.

Ukraine's leader warned that if Russia resorted to attacking its power utilities, it would respond in kind.

Ukraine has conducted numerous long-range aerial drone strikes on Moscow since May 2023.

Most recently on November 20, it was reported that one such incursion was intercepted close to the city, per Kyiv Post .

Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed this and elaborated that the region's air defense systems intercepted the unmanned craft over the city of Elektrostal to the east of Moscow, as well as another over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow.

The details of the recently surfaced video footage have yet to be independently verified.
