Jamie Foxx And Tom Cruise Had A Tight Friendship Before Katie Holmes Romance

Katie Holmes was a tabloid fixture in the mid-aughts thanks to her whirlwind romance with Tom Cruise . However, she proved she's more than capable of keeping things quiet — even from her excitable husband — when she stunned everybody by slapping Tom with divorce papers in 2012, per The Hollywood Reporter . Shocking everyone further, when Holmes walked away from the five-year marriage, and moved to New York City, she took Suri Cruise with her. By all accounts, Tom has rarely seen his daughter since, with some outlets reporting it's allegedly been "over a decade" since they spent time together. However, it was more than Holmes and Suri that Tom lost. His friendship with Jamie Foxx  ended after Holmes struck up a secret romance with him. According to Harper's Bazaar , they were first spotted — with Cruise — in 2006. No, it wasn't a date; they were all watching a Vikings game. In 2013, Holmes was spotted partying with Foxx in the Hamptons. Per People , "the actress even tried a sip of Foxx's cocktail." 

Despite never confirming their relationship, Us Weekly  reported they split in 2019 after Holmes became sick of Foxx's womanizing — not a problem she ever had with Tom. So, let's dive into Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise's tight friendship before his Katie Holmes romance went and ruined it all.

Pre-Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise had another love: Jamie Foxx. They met when they both auditioned for "Jerry McGuire" in 1994. The actors enjoyed an endearing, super-tight relationship until Foxx began getting hot and heavy with the third ex-Mrs. Cruise. Foxx told Graham Norton that Cruise taught him the art of subtle acting. He also shared he learned what an A-lister his co-star was after Foxx crashed their stunt car while filming the 2004 action flick "Collateral" and the production team's only concern was Cruise's wellbeing.

In 2012, Foxx paid serious props to his friend. Ironically, he praised Cruise and Holmes for how they handled their divorce. "You have to commend them for settling everything and sort of like nipping things in the bud," Foxx told Extra , adding it was "testimony to both of their characters."

"Back in the day, they had a serious bromance," Entertainment Tonight  reported. The two were clearly enamored with each other after filming "Collateral." They flirted at the movie's premiere, with Foxx telling Cruise he'd brought the hot to the red carpet and was looking mighty fine. The single dads also shared parenting tips and enjoyed playdates after Isabella and Connor Cruise became friends with Corrinne Foxx. "He's the most genuine and cool guy," Foxx told ET. "I told him from now on, you got a friend. When I say that, I really mean it." Until he started hooking up with Cruise's ex, presumably.

Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise went from best bros to fierce foes after Foxx began dating Katie Holmes. Cruise was reportedly "furious" after learning that his bestie was secretly hooking up with his ex-wife. "Tom feels hurt and deceived," a source told the National Enquirer in 2014. Apparently, that had been a fear of Foxx and Holmes' from the get-go. "Neither of them wanted this affair out in the open," the source suggested. "Jamie wanted to keep it quiet because he figured Tom would consider it a betrayal of their friendship."

Meanwhile, Radar Online claimed that as part of their lightning-fast divorce settlement, Holmes agreed to Cruise's demand that she wouldn't publicly get involved with another man until 2017. "She's allowed to date, but she cannot do so in a public fashion, and she's not supposed to let any boyfriend near their daughter, Suri," a source said. "Katie wanted out of the marriage so badly, she agreed to the terms — and got $4.8 million in child support, plus another $5 million for herself."

However, there's a bright light on the bromance horizon. "Naughty But Nice" claims Cruise and Foxx kissed and made up once Holmes was out of the equation. "Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx are friends again!" Rob Shuter announced. "It wasn't pretty, but now Tom and Jamie are mending their broken relationship," he claimed sources had told him.

Jamie Foxx first began working in the entertainment industry as a stand-up comedian. He then went on to appear in several sitcoms and became a featured player in the sketch comedy show In Living Color , where he got his big break.

Then, Foxx made his feature film debut in the 1992 Robin Williams movie Toys . Since then, he’s gone on to star in many great films, including Ali (2001), Ray (2004), Dreamgirls (2006), Django Unchained (2012) alongside Leonardo DiCaprio , and Baby Driver (2017).

Before he got his big break in the movie industry, Jamie Foxx had the opportunity to audition for Jerry Maguire (1996), which is considered one of the best movies of all time.

This was a huge opportunity, given that the actor only had a couple of TV and film credits to his name back then. A role alongside Tom Cruise and Renée Zellweger could’ve helped his career significantly.

“I’m in LA and I audition, just like, on a—I don’t know how I got in,” Foxx told Howard Stern of his audition for Jerry Maguire . “And the guy goes, ‘He’s great! We’re gonna take you to New York,’ because they hadn’t signed Tom Cruise on yet. ‘We’re gonna take you to New York and read for Tom Cruise.’”

However, when the time came to audition next to the Mission: Impossible star, Foxx just couldn’t maintain his composure.

“So I get to New York, and I was just—come on, man," Foxx said. “Tom Cruise walked in with the little leather jacket … he looked like he had just walked off of Top Gun . I was just done.” The actor recalls that he felt out of place next to Cruise. “I kept looking at him. Imagine you’re from Texas, and you’ve done a little bit of s**t, but you ain’t seen no real f***ing stars, right?” he explained.

So, he tried to impress Cruise before the audition.

“So I’ll never forget making a fool of myself by … speaking to Tom, and Tom said, ‘Where do you live.’ I said, ‘Oh, I got two houses. I live in LA and Vegas, you know what I’m saying?’” However, Foxx’s bragging attempts were completely far from the truth.

“I’m going toe to toe with Tom Cruise," Foxx told Stern. "F--- it, I’m late on payments and all kinds of s--t, … Two houses. … So I said, where do you live? He said, ‘Rome.’ And I said, ‘Rome Street?’ … He looked at me like, ‘No mother-----, Italy!’” Clearly, Foxx’s attempts to impress Cruise completely failed.

Ultimately, Jamie Foxx lost out on that leading role in Jerry Maguire but it wasn’t only because he tried to impress Tom Cruise. As it turns out, Foxx made a major mistake during his audition that cost him the role.

“So I got to read. But, as I am reading, I’m loud, ‘Show me the money’ you know what I mean, right?” Foxx said of his audition with Tom Cruise during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show .

Then, Mission: Impossible said his line and made a dramatic pause. When the silence carried for too long, Foxx began thinking something was wrong. “I thought he lost his place 'cause I couldn’t hear him.”

Foxx then tried to “help” Cruise.

“So I said, ‘We’re right here.’ He says, ‘I know I said the line and waited for you.’” When he realized his mistake, Foxx immediately began to go through the script to find his line. It’s unclear if he did, but if he managed to salvage his audition, he didn’t get the role.

“Anyway, I didn’t get the part, and you know of course you know Cuba Gooding got the part.” In fact, Gooding Jr. went on to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for this role.

Not Being Cast In Jerry Maguire Taught Jamie Foxx An Important Lesson That Helped His Career

Despite not getting a role in Jerry Maguire, Jamie Foxx’s career took a turn for the best in 1996, as the actor went on to star in his own sitcom, titled The Jamie Foxx Show, that year. Since then, he’s appeared in numerous movies, many of them blockbuster hits, and has amassed a $170 million net worth .

Looking back, Foxx admits his failed Jerry Maguire audition actually helped his career.

“I had to learn how to bring it down,” he told Graham Norton. This lesson helped him significantly when he reunited with Tom Cruise a couple of years later. “Later on I did Collateral with Tom Cruise and then got nominated for an Oscar,” he added.

However, he didn’t manage to impress Cruise that second time around. While working in Collateral , Foxx tried to show off his improvisation skills.

“So I'm in the cab, ACTING. And Michael [Mann] says, 'What are you doing?' And I said, 'I gotta do my thing. You know who's in the backseat [Tom Cruise], and I gotta do my thing!' He says, 'How about you not do your thing?', Foxx recalled during a 2018 interview with Yahoo Entertainment .

"That was a moment of learning,” he explained. "[Michael Mann] was telling me, in other words, to shed whatever I'd obtained up to that point. Celebrity, this and that — you gotta shed it, in order for you to get to it. Otherwise, you're in trouble. I learned that and, even today, use that as a tool, or a discipline, to get to the characters."

That was another major lesson he learned thanks to Cruise.

Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx were once the best of friends, but now they are no longer speaking. The reason for their falling out has everything to do with Katie Holmes. The two actors first became close while filming the movie Collateral, but then a woman came between them. In a recent episode of The Graham Norton Show , Jamie Foxx discussed the time he almost starred in a movie with Tom Cruise.

He revealed that he was offered the role, but he had to turn it down due to scheduling conflicts. The two actors have not been seen together since then, and it is unlikely that they will ever be friends again. It is a shame that their friendship had to end this way, but it is clear that Katie Holmes was the cause of their rift.

Are Tom Cruise & Jamie Foxx Friends?

You know that unspoken rule you have between you and your friends that no one, in any circumstance, is allowed to date anyone else's current and/or former significant other? Yeah, celebrities have that, too. Except, just like us, celebrities don't always adhere to the rule. Jamie Foxx and Katie Holmes are rumored to be dating (yes, still), which begs the question... are Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise friends ? Because, it sort of seemed like they were. And if so, this is all just super awkward. For them, at least.

I guess it all boils down to the fact that Cruise and Foxx were co-workers first , as any and every publication will point out in connection with Foxx and Holmes alleged relationship. But it's one thing to work with someone, send them off with best wishes, and never see them again. It's another thing if you two have a history. Which, um , Cruise and Foxx do.

The two actors actually go way back, before they ended up starring together in Collateral in 2004. As Foxx hilariously recalled in an interview with Graham Norton, he read for Cuba Gooding Jr.'s role in Jerry Maguire with Jerry Maguire himself. Take a look:

Despite interacting in professional settings, these actors don't and didn't seem to have that type of cordial yet aloof relationship so often seen in Hollywood. No, the actors actually seemed fairly friendly. If you can't quite recall any instances of the two being chummy with one another, perhaps this video will jog your memory — or just change your mind if you're skeptical:

Yes, it was a skit. But it's clear the two had the definite comfortable familiarity with one another needed to pull it off. Besides, in an extremely ironic interview Foxx did with Extra in 2012, an interviewer acknowledged Cruise as one of his "good friends" and, in addition to that, Foxx spoke about the Cruise/Holmes divorce and only had the kindest and most reassuring of words to say:

Do they have matching friendship bracelets or one half of a broken heart necklace that reads either, "Best" or "Friend?" Probably not. But you don't need special trinkets or to even chat with someone on the phone everyday to acknowledge them as a confidant. So, I think it's safe to say that a friendship (and if the rumors are true, perhaps a now sort of awkward friendship) exists between the actors, given the evidence.

Jamie Foxx is one of the biggest names in Hollywood having starred in films such as Collateral, Django Unchained and Ray. While he might be one of the most sought after names in show business, he's also one of the hardest working.

Instead of a stunt man, the 54-year-old did all his own stunts in Django Unchained including the horse-riding. He's also a bit of an action hero away from the screen as in 2016 he saved a stranger from a burning car after it crashed outside his home.

The car skidded on a wet road, hit a ditch and flipped, ending up near the front gate of Jamie's LA home. Jamie told California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers that he had heard the accident occur, and dashed outside to see what had happened.

Upon seeing the burning wreck and realising the driver was still strapped into his seat, Jamie thought quickly and decided to unbuckle the man and drag him around 30 feet away from the scene for fear the car may explode. He apparently phoned emergency services before his heroics who soon arrived to transport the man to hospital.

Jamie, born Eric Marlon Bishop, first came to fame after working on the comedy circuit, before he starred in his own sitcom The Jamie Foxx Show from 1996 to 2001. He soon began picking up huge acting gigs and the rest is history.

At the time of the burning car incident he was dating Katie Holmes, ex wife of Tom Cruise. The pair went public (kind of) in September 2017 when they were pictured strolling hand-in-hand along the beach in Malibu shortly after the five-year anniversary of her divorce from Tom.

The couple had known for each other for years beforehand as Jamie co-starred in 2004 film Collateral alongside Tom Cruise. Katie and Jamie ended their relationship in 2019 and they have tended not to talk about the relationship or the breakup publicly.

Jamie is the proud father to two daughters – 27-year-old Corinne who he shares with ex-wife Connie Kline, and 12-year-old Anelise, who he shares with ex-girlfriend Kristin Grannis. Corrine is a famous model, actress and television producer who has appeared in several films and TV shows.

She has spoken previously about her determination to make her own way in show business and even considered changing her name once. She told entertainment website People : "I had a lot of people telling me, ‘You don’t have to go to college. You can just go straight into the entertainment world, doors will open for you. You could be making millions of dollars'. I just grew up my whole life and I didn’t want to just ride on my dad’s coattails. I wanted to, you know, make my own name, do things myself.”

After initially keeping their romance under wraps, Katie Holmes and Jamie Foxx put their love on display after going public in 2015.

Holmes began her relationship with Foxx one year after finalizing her divorce from Tom Cruise in 2012. (Holmes and Cruise, who share a daughter, wed in 2006, two years after she called off her engagement to Chris Klein .)

After two public romances, the actress remained largely tight-lipped about her personal life after moving on with Foxx. Six years into their relationship, they made their red carpet debut in May 2019 at the Met Gala where they posed for photos.

However, Us Weekly confirmed three months later that Foxx and Holmes called it quits after half a decade together.

Literally Every Single Thing We Know About Katie Holmes and Jamie Foxx's Relationship

After a very public relationship with Tom Cruise that ended in divorce in 2012, Katie Holmes all but disappeared from the spotlight. Holmes chose to focus instead on her work as an actor, producer, and director, and her low-key life with daughter Suri in New York City. But in the last year we've gotten much more information about  Holmes' relationship with Jamie Foxx,  the man she's been quietly dating for over five years.

Last year, Holmes finally stepped out holding hands with Foxx, and they've since provided glimpses of casual get-togethers and even (gasp!) some PDA. Here's everything we know about one of the most private relationships in Hollywood, from how it all started to where they are today.

August 2013

It's believed that Holmes and Foxx began their relationship in 2013, a year or so after Holmes split from Cruise. The two had known each other as far back as 2006–here they are with Holmes' now-ex Cruise.

Apparently, Foxx and Holmes saw one another again at a benefit in the Hamptons in 2016, according to  People , where they were seen dancing arm-in-arm. Once they officially got together, the couple reportedly went to extreme lengths—including disguises—to keep their relationship a secret, and we didn't hear a peep out of them for  18 whole months.

Extremely blurry photos  appear to show Holmes and Foxx holding hands, and  Us Weekly  unofficially confirms the relationship.

A source told  People , "This is not some intense romance.” The source added, “Jamie and Katie are friends and have been for a long time. They are two adults who are attractive and single, and so apparently conclusions will be drawn…But contrary to those conclusions, they’re not about to run off and make some serious commitment.”

December 2015

Holmes was a guest at Foxx's 48th birthday bash in New York City. Her presence at the surprise party, also attended by Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys, was the first sign in close to a year that the couple remained together (phew).

Both Foxx and Holmes were spotted wearing rings on their wedding fingers. Jamie Foxx's rep shot down rumors that the pair are engaged or married to  People — the first time a rep for either of the couple had alluded to their relationship.

August 2016

Holmes was in the audience at Barbra Streisand's concert in New York City to see Foxx be brought onstage, but Holmes and Foxx didn't sit together and no photographs were taken of the couple. We can assume that Holmes was there to cheer on her boyfriend, though.

Holmes visited Foxx in Paris when he shot the  Robin Hood  remake (released in late 2018). "They’re going to go out to dinner more often," a source tells  Us.  "They plan to start going public."

September 2017

A watershed moment! Holmes and Foxx held hands and  walked along a beach together,  proving to the world that the relationship was still going strong (despite continuing to be very tight-lipped about the whole thing, obviously).

January 2018

Finally! Katie attended  Clive Davis' Pre-Grammys Gala  in honor of Jay Z with Foxx on her arm, and the two looked happy and in love. The couple spent the entire time smiling and whispering to each other, according to photos (finally! photos!).

February 2018

Foxx literally walked off an interview with ESPN, as reported in  Page Six , after being asked about his relationship with Holmes, thus confirming in no uncertain terms that he was not going to discuss the relationship.

As has now become customary for the couple, they arrived and left separately for a date night in New York, this time at the high-end restaurant Nobu, according to  People .

A rumor began to spread that the couple had broken up, but Holmes' publicist was quick to shoot the story down to  People . Of course, neither Holmes nor Foxx had ever confirmed their relationship to begin with, so this firm denial was  very  interesting.

Holmes and Foxx were spotted  on a date  in New Orleans, then they  celebrated her birthday  together in New York, and  then  they engaged in some  steamy, sexy PDA  while they were on a yacht in Miami.

These are  big  steps for the couple, who have presumably gotten very used to keeping their relationship behind closed doors. Five years on (!), even though they've still not confirmed their relationship, they've clearly gotten comfortable with everyone knowing about it.

February 2019

Well, somewhere along the line, things reportedly went wrong. Very wrong. Although the last public update on the relationship saw them indulging in endless romance, and even some very uncharacteristic PDA towards the end of 2018, the new year took a turn.

In February, it was speculated that the couple had quietly split and ended things for good, after Foxx was heard telling party-party-goers that he was “single."

During an evening at Byron Allen’s annual Oscars celebration, HollywoodLife reported that the 51-year-old actor “told the crowd he’s single”, and “had a lot of women on stage and danced with them.” Meanwhile, a second source for  UsWeekly  backed up the claims, adding: “It was very nonchalant, while he was referring to married and single couples, he just dropped the line, ‘I’m single’.”

Well, that was the unexpected plot twist that nobody asked for. How did this HAPPEN?

Juuuuuust kidding! Either the pair have gotten back together, or they never split in the first place.  Daily Mail  spotted the couple walking casually down the street in Katie's home of New York, then the pair meandered through Central Park and into the Metropolitan Museum of Art together. (You can go to that link for the photos—intriguing choice of hat, Katie!)

It's worth noting that Jamie saying he's single might be something that the two actors had agreed upon to downplay their relationship (remember that  Sex and the City  episode when Samantha counseled her actor boyfriend Smith to say he was single in a public interview to better his brand?), but it ended up causing more drama rather than less. I think they might need to tweak their system a bit, is all I'm saying. OR they actually did take a brief break, and we saw a tiny sneak peek at their private life before they became tight-lipped about the situation again.

Amid the breakup rumors, Katie only added fuel to the fire by posting  a very sexy photo of herself  en route to the Neiman Marcus Hudson Yards grand opening.

There was a seismic shift in Katie and Jamie's relationship this month, at least when it came to the couple's oh-so-rare public appearances. First, they were spotted with Jamie's daughter Corinne on a gelato trip in L.A., during which the couple laughed and held hands openly (and, I mean, holding hands with your boyfriend when you're with their daughter—that's a pretty committed relationship move, no?).

Then , the two walked the streets of New York in broad daylight (a bold move!) holding hands, with Katie wearing sweatpants, a trucker hat, and Adidas sneakers, and Jamie in ripped jeans and aviators. (I get the sense that Jamie is on his way somewhere, whereas Katie is going back to bed? I feel you, Katie.)

In huge, huge news,  Katie and Jamie attended their first  major  event together —the Met Gala. They didn't walk the red carpet together, although you can see him close by, just over to the left, while Katie poses with designer Zac Posen:

Then they  actually posed together  inside the venue. meeting Cardi B and then just chilling by the gorgeous pink backdrop together. They even gave us some of that rare PDA that is just so, so cute (and rare) for the private couple:

The best part, for me, might be the fact that Jamie literally coordinated his look to Katie's with matching shoes—that's a supportive boyfriend, right there. Per  People , Katie wore a "Zac Posen gown, made of 300 yards of multi-layered hand sewn colored tulle, a Tyler Ellis clutch and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry." She looks amazing, he looks amazing in those shades, and they're clearly thrilled to be together. Heart eye emojis for everyone! 

Later in the month, Jamie's 25-year-old daughter, Corrine, opened up about her dad's relationship and confirmed that he and Katie are "really great" together.

“They are so great and Katie is always so chic. They were wonderful. [It was] my dad’s first Met Gala," Corinne  told People  when asked about the couple’s appearance at the annual fashion event, where the couple made their carpet debut. "They’re really good, really great."

According to  Page Six , Jamie was at a public event, Corkcicle’s Rosé Day LA, updating a friend about his relationship with Katie. "[He said] things are going swimmingly," per the source. "They’re making [long] distance work, and they are stronger than ever." Obviously, this wasn't Jamie talking publicly to a reporter—he never does that—but I love that he (reportedly) speaks with love about her when he's with companions. It's a big difference in language between public to private communication.

So, there's likely no plans that I can tell for the pair to move from California (Jamie) or New York (Katie). Both are still  attending events regularly where they live locally , and are spotted traveling to see each other from time to time. While I certainly long for more events where they show up together, as with the Met Gala, I love love love the detail that they are stronger than ever, and that the fan-favorite couple shows no sign of slowing down. It's so sweet!

August 2019

Wait. WHAT?? The couple is over,  according to E! , and it's been over since May. My heart just broke in half! But they attended a red carpet together in May! Their daughter talked about how sweet they were together! He said things were going great!  What happened??  Neither of them are going to comment officially, but the couple had been going strong for  years.

"This split news has emerged just days after Foxx was spotted holding hands with singer Sela Vave outside of a nightclub in West Hollywood. The duo, who have not commented on their relationship status, were photographed leaving Lil Pump's 19th birthday celebration together at Bootsy Bellows on Friday, Aug. 16," according to E!. Initially, it was just rumored that the two were supportive friends, but apparently that's not true.

Following reports of the breakup, neither camp issued a statement—which is telling, because you'll remember that they denied breaking up back in June (which, ironically, was the first time they'd confirmed they were actually  together ). So it feels as though the lack of denial might indicate that the rumors are true, and the two have gone their separate ways.

According to  People 's  source, "It ran its course. This industry is very tough on relationships...Jamie thinks Katie is an incredible human being. They had a very, very deep connection. They brought each other a lot of joy and laughter."

Meanwhile,   ET 's  source isn't ruling out the possibility of a reconciliation. "They never had a typical relationship...They have always been incredibly independent and their lives didn't revolve around each other." But  Us Weekly 's  source has the most (potentially) juicy tidbit of all: the two were living "different lives" and "It has been many years of him stepping out with other women."

In the days following news of the split, Jamie was forced to address rumors that he'd moved in with Sela Vave, 21, a singer he'd been spotted holding hands with. The verdict, according to Jamie? They live together, but it's strictly a business arrangement. "We took her under our wing," Jamie said in a video posted to Instagram Live, saying that he would never cross the line into romance with Vave—"that girl's mom put her trust in me," Jamie added. He also addressed the  hand-holding photos,  saying: "I’m escorting her to my car, to put her in the car."

Vave shared the video on her own account, writing: "For the people who care… here is the TRUE story… for everyone else you can keep talking and calling me a whore, slut, home wrecker, thot, gold digger."

Is Jamie Foxx trying to mend his friendship with Tom Cruise post his split from Katie Holmes?

Under-the-radar couple Jamie Foxx and Katie Holmes have called it quits after six years of dating.

An entertainment source confirmed to PEOPLE "Jamie and Katie split."

The pair, who have been linked since 2013, parted ways in May — the same month that they posed together for the first time at the 2019 Met Gala. They were also seen laughing and holding hands in videos posted to designer Zac Posen's Instagram Stories.

In April, a source told PEOPLE that Foxx, 51, and Holmes, 40, were trying to make time for each other as much as possible.

"When they can spend time together, they do. When they're busy and they can't, they don't. They are two adults who enjoy each other's company and have for a long time," the insider said.

The former couple remained tight-lipped about their romance but managed to make several other rare appearances together throughout their relationship.

In January 2018, Foxx and Holmes looked every bit the happy couple at Clive Davis' annual Pre- Grammy Awards Gala. Though the two arrived separately, they sat together at the same table once inside the star-studded event.

But it appeared the actress tried to avoid drawing attention to herself by leaving the room and moving to a different seat just moments before Davis announced the singer's presence.

However, Davis called out the move, saying, "This lady left the room right when I was going to introduce her, she was sitting at that table right with Jamie Foxx and everyone else."

Davis added, "If you're going to sit together what better night than tonight?"

The pair even wrapped up the year with a December yacht outing in Miami, followed by a jet ski trip the next day.

And that wasn't the first time Foxx and Holmes were caught on a romantic outing.

in May 2017, Foxx and Holmes were spotted spending time together in Paris.

Holmes met up at a hotel with Foxx, who had been in the City of Lights to shoot his film Robin Hood, sources confirmed at the time. (Meanwhile, Cruise was working on the sixth installment of his Mission: Impossible franchise a few blocks away.)

While the actress kept a low profile during her Paris stay, she did stop by Luc Besson's studio Cité du Cinemas where Foxx was filming. Later, the duo was photographed boarding a private jet together out of the city.

In September 2017, the stars were spotted walking hand in hand along the sand barefoot in Malibu, relaunching a years-long buzz about a romance. A few months later in December, the two celebrated Foxx's 50th birthday with a night out in Los Angeles. They were seen leaving the Highlight Room together.

A new round of rumors surfaced in 2016 after the actress stepped out in New York City wearing a diamond ring (which she'd been sporting for months) while Foxx was spotted wearing a gold band.

Foxx's rep told PEOPLE at the time that the movie stars were neither engaged nor married.

In 2015, a source told PEOPLE they weren't getting serious. "This is not some intense romance," the source said. "Jamie and Katie are friends and have been for a long time. They are two adults who are attractive and single, and so apparently conclusions will be drawn. But contrary to those conclusions, they're not about to run off and make some serious commitment."

Added a Foxx source at the time: "[They] see each other and go out together, but Jamie would tell you he is not involved with anyone seriously. [He]'s a workaholic and couldn't be happier in his life as it is."

In a November 2014 cover story, Holmes told PEOPLE that she "absolutely" still believes in love.

"I'm a very loving person," she said. "Of course I'm open to finding love again."

The pair first made headlines when they hit the dance floor together at the Apollo in the Hamptons event in East Hampton, New York, in 2013, a little over a year after Holmes and Tom Cruise split in 2012 after six years of marriage. They jammed out to Robin Thicke 's summer anthem, "Blurred Lines" and Foxx's 2009 hit "Blame It (On the Alcohol)" at the benefit concert.

The actor and musician denied that he and Holmes were an item following the encounter.

"[The rumors] are one hundred percent not true. In fact, it's quite hilarious because we simply danced at a charity event along with a lot of other people," he told Entertainment Tonight at the time.

Reps for both actors had no immediate comment in response to news of their split.

Their breakup comes three days after Foxx was spotted holding hands with singer Sela Vave on Friday night as the two left Bootsy Bellows nightclub in Los Angeles.

Vave, a singer/songwriter and model, is the record producer's newest artist. "She's just a girl he's helping out, a young singer," a source told PEOPLE at the time.

An eyewitness who was at La Esquina restaurant on Friday night told PageSix that they had overheard Holmes telling a friend that she and Foxx "haven't been together for months." Sources told both PageSix and E! News that the two stopped seeing each other in May.

Jamie Foxx’s friends and family aren’t sharing his medical diagnosis. Here’s why

Jamie Foxx was hospitalized weeks ago but there’s still not much publicly known.

Anyone who has followed Jamie Foxx’s career closely, however, shouldn’t be surprised by that.

On April 11, Foxx was hospitalized in Atlanta , Georgia, where he had been filming the Netflix movie, “Back in Action.”

CNN has reached out to reps for Foxx multiple times for information on both what happened and the actor’s status, and has been unable to get additional details from them.

There has been practically no information released other than his family initially asking for privacy and a post last week on Foxx’s verified social media account.

“Appreciate all the love!!!” the post reads. “Feeling blessed.”

The desire for privacy is in keeping with how the “Ray” star has always lived, despite a career that puts him in the spotlight.

A perusal of interviews with Foxx over the years yields plenty of information about his thoughts on his roles, a multitude of jokes, some information about his childhood and very little insight into his actual personal life.

Foxx reportedly dated fellow superstar Katie Holmes, the ex-wife of Tom Cruise, for half a dozen years — a relationship neither ever confirmed on the record despite being photographed over the years during what appeared to be romantic dates or moments where they were affectionate with one another.

In 2016, former “Real Housewives of Atlanta” cast member Claudia Jordan appeared to confirm Foxx and Holmes were dating during a podcast appearance saying, “He is very happy with her. I like that he seems very happy.”

Jordan later clarified her comments, telling “Entertainment Tonight” she “misspoke.”

“I have no knowledge of Jamie with Katie at all,” she said. “I’ve never seen them together.”

Two years later, Foxx was being interviewed by SportsCenter host Michael Smith about participating in an NBA celebrity basketball game when Smith asked the star, “Did you and Katie Holmes play basketball for Valentine’s Day? Like some real Love & Basketball?”

Foxx abruptly ended the interview by taking off his headset and walking away.

Foxx and Holmes reportedly split in 2019.

So the silence surrounding Foxx’s “medical complication,” to use his family’s words initially, seems in keeping with how the performer conducts himself.

Celebrities have handled such situations in a variety of ways, from Jeremy Renner’s very public recuperation following being run over by a snow plow to Chadwick Boseman’s colon cancer diagnosis not becoming public until after the “Black Panther” actor’s death.

Those who know Foxx have been circumspect when they do talk about his current state.

During an interview on the “Impaulsive” podcast released last week, Kevin Hart said he was “fortunate” to have a close enough friendship with Foxx that he can check on him.

Hart said Foxx is “getting better” and also touched on why not much has been shared about him publicly from Foxx’s inner circle.

“They’re being tight for reasons just about where he is because Jamie’s always been a private person to a certain degree,” Hart said.

Fox network has announced that that Nick Cannon will be filling in as guest host on “Beat Shazam,” a musical game show that Foxx hosts with his daughter, Corinne.

A previous version of this story incorrectly stated Foxx was transported to the hospital via emergency vehicle.

A Complete Timeline of Katie Holmes and Jamie Foxx’s Rumored Relationship

A look back at the key moments in their super-private romance.

Here, take a look back at all of the key moments in Katie Holmes and Jamie Foxx's secretive courtship , from how they met to their secretive split.

2004: Foxx works with Tom Cruise on Collateral .

Before Cruise meets and marries Holmes, he works with Foxx on the movie Collateral . The pair appear to strike up a friendship over the course of filming.

Cruise meets Holmes in April 2005, according to The Hollywood Reporter .

2006: Holmes is spotted with Cruise and Foxx.

Holmes attends a football game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Washington Redskins on September 11, 2006 in Maryland. She is seen chatting to Foxx on the field, who is clearly an acquaintance, as she attends the game with Cruise.

June 29, 2012: Holmes files for divorce from Tom Cruise.

Cruise's rep releases a statement (reported via Yahoo! ) which says, "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy." CBS reports that Cruise is blindsided by the divorce, and tells a German television station, "I didn't expect it."

August 2013: Foxx and Holmes are seen dancing together in the Hamptons.

Over a year after Holmes has separated from Cruise , rumors about a new relationship start when Holmes and Foxx are spotted at the same event in the Hamptons. They're photographed flirting with one another, with People reporting that "Foxx wrangled [Ellen] DeGeneres and Holmes for a group hug, the ladies flanking him," and "at one point, the actress even tried a sip of Foxx’s cocktail," suggesting that they're either very close, or this is the start of a flirtation between them.

October 2013: Foxx denies that he is dating Holmes.

The Baby Driver actor tells Entertainment Tonigh t that he isn't dating Holmes. He says, "[The rumors] are one hundred percent not true. In fact, it's quite hilarious because we simply danced at a charity event along with a lot of other people."

February 2015: Holmes and Foxx are photographed holding hands for the first time.

The secretive actors are seen holding hands in public , but they don't confirm their relationship. Instead, PopSugar claims that, instead, they go to even bigger efforts to hide their romance, with Katie putting "on a wig and hat to meet him at a hotel" at one point, which is a commitment, if true.

March 2015: A source claims that the relationship isn't that serious.

An alleged source tells People , "This is not some intense romance. Jamie and Katie are friends and have been for a long time. They are two adults who are attractive and single... they’re not about to run off and make some serious commitment."

December 2015: Holmes attends Foxx's 48th birthday party.

TMZ reports that Holmes is spotted in the crowd at Foxx's birthday celebration, spurring on rumors that they're secretly a couple.

June 2016: Foxx's friend gets in trouble for spilling secrets.

Former Real Housewives of Atlanta star, and a friend of Foxx's, Claudia Jordan, lets a little too much info about her friend's relationship slip while appearing on a podcast . Jordan reveals, "He is very happy with her. I love that he seems very happy."

July 2016: Foxx visits Holmes on the set of The Kennedys After Camelot .

The rumored couple are seen having dinner in Toronto, where Holmes is filming . Foxx doesn't even keep the fact that he's in town a secret, because he poses with a fan for an Instagram shot.

December 2016: They celebrate Holmes's 38th birthday in Mexico.

A source tells Us Weekly , "They stayed in one of the most private suites at the hotel, separate from other guests and entered by a small path. They wanted to be very discreet and had everything delivered to their room and taken care of by a personal butler."

May 2017: Holmes visits Foxx on location in Paris.

According to a report in People , Holmes is photographed boarding a private jet in Paris with Foxx, where the actor has been filming a new version of Robin Hood. Of the romance, an "insider" apparently tells Us Weekly that Katie "gushes about how amazing he is. She says she loves him from the tips of her toes to the top of her head."

September 2017: Holmes and Foxx are spotted holding hands on a rare public outing.

Holmes and Foxx are photographed holding hands on Labor Day as they walk along a beach in Malibu together. The Daily Mail shares photos of the couple looking extremely loved up.

December 2017: They celebrate Foxx's 50th birthday in Los Angeles.

Of the party, PopSugar reports, "They walked in together. They mostly mingled with other guests, and spent very little alone time. It was obvious that Jamie had a great birthday. Katie looked like she had fun as well. She looked gorgeous."

January 27, 2018: Holmes and Foxx sit together at a Pre-Grammys party.

February 2018: Foxx walks out of an interview when asked about Holmes.

Foxx walks away when an interviewer quizzes him about Holmes. However, he smiles throughout the interaction, suggesting he isn't that angry about it.

People reports that Foxx and Holmes play basketball together on Valentine's Day.

June 2018: Holmes's rep denies breakup reports.

Seeming to indirectly confirm that Holmes and Foxx are, in fact, dating, Holmes's rep shoots down a story which claims that the actors have broken up.

Radar Online reports that "she and Foxx have split after five years of intense, covert dating—and have even called off the intimate dream wedding they’d been planning. 'Katie just couldn’t get over her trust issues.'"

However, Holmes's rep tells People , "The Radar story is 100 percent untrue," which appears to confirm that the relationship is still on.

December 2018: They show PDA in Miami.

Foxx and Holmes were seen kissing on a luxury yacht and racing on wave runners together in Miami, FL ahead of New Year's Eve. The Oscar winner joked to Us Weekly of their not-so-secret PDA, "It was foolish!"

May 2019: They make their Met Gala debut—and then break up.

Although they didn't walk the red carpet together, Foxx and Holmes were photographed together inside the 2019 Met Gala for the first time. In full couple mode, the duo coordinated in shades of purple, with Holmes in a dark and dreamy Zac Posen number, and Foxx in matching violet shoes.

Sources tell Page Six and E! News that Holmes and Foxx broke up in May, shortly after their Met Gala cameo. However, the split didn't make headlines until months later.

August 2019: Their breakup makes news after Foxx is seen with another woman.

On Friday, August 16, Foxx raised eyebrows when he was photographed holding hands with singer Sela Vave while out in L.A. Days later, reports broke that Foxx and Holmes had split in May. Per Page Six , after Foxx's PDA photos with Vave circulated, the actress was reportedly overheard telling friends that she and Foxx "haven’t been together for months."

The former couple have not yet publicly responded to breakup reports.

Jamie Foxx’s condition was unchanged when friends asked for prayers: source

Prayers are still in order for Jamie Foxx.

The actor’s condition had apparently “not changed” when friends took to social media desperately asking for prayers earlier this week.

A source told Page Six, “Nothing had changed. He was still in the same condition.”

Still, friends like Kevin Hart insist the Oscar-winning “Ray” actor is “getting better” — three weeks into his long-term hospitalization.

On Wednedsay, Hart told the “Impaulsive” podcast there has been “a lot of progression” in Foxx’s health, just as news broke that Foxx would not return to host “Beat Shazam” show with his daughter, Corinne.

Hart admitted he doesn’t know “exact details” of Foxx’s condition, explaining that the actor’s team is, “being tight … about where he is because Jamie’s always been a private person to a certain degree,” he said.

“Everybody’s prayers, everybody’s love, energy — all that stuff is seen and felt,” Hart continued.

Martin Lawrence also recently told “Extra” that he was hearing, “he’s doing better.”

A source who recently spoke to one of Foxx’s closest pals also described them as “holding things close to the vest,” but “it seems serious,” they said.

Reps for Foxx, 55, have not commented on the star’s condition, and previously directed press to his daughter’s initial statement where she revealed her dad suffered a mysterious “medical complication,” but is now in “recovery,” she posted on April 12.

On April 5, her post was more upbeat announcing the premiere date of their show “Beat Shazam.”

“The answer is May 23rd! I can’t believe we’re going into our sixth season!” she wrote.

But on Wednesday, the show’s network, Fox, announced Nick Cannon “has offered to fill in as guest host for his friends, Jamie and Corinne Foxx.”

The show announced Kelly Osbourne would fill in for Corinne as DJ.

Foxx broke his silence and posted on social media : “Appreciate all the love!!! Feeling blessed,” followed by various emojis.

He had a message for Cannon: “Appreciate ya my boy @NickCannon,” he wrote on his Instagram Story. “See u all soon.”

Meanwhile, earlier this week, his good friend Charlie Mack, posted on social media: “We need you back Bro… Oh Allah I come before you yet once again humbly asking please heal & restore our brotha… stronger & better than before!”
